Problems with 2010 Toyota Prius SERVICE BRAKES

On average, the 2010 Toyota Prius starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES and its various aspects after 89 666 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES problems on 2010 Toyota Prius

The car in front of me stopped abruptly and i slammed on my brakes. i held them to the floor and the car continued at the same speed into the rear end of the car in front of me. i was at least 1 and 1/2 car lengths away when i slammed on the brakes. i have been told by state farm insurance that there was a recall on the 2010 prius. i was told my my toyota car dealer that my car was built in march 2010 and thus was not part of the recall. i purchased this car in 11/13. is there a way to verify exactly which day my car was built? *tr

Ever since acquiring this vehicle earlier this year, i have been experiencing loss of breaking for a second every time i hit a pothole and bumpy spot. it happens every other time. upon goggling this problem, i learned that the problem was first reported to nhtsa way back in 2009. but i do not see any recalls related to this problem. your website says you have received about 33 complains. unless i missed something, is there any status report from toyota or the recall that specifically addresses this problem? also, i live in the east coast, specifically in nj. we had a brutal winter this year. in one incident, i was driving up a slightly elevated road (barely 2--5% incline) in a 25mph residential road with slightly slippery road (not really black ice per se). i loss control and traction control lite up and started beeping. while trying to bring the car in control, my car ended up on the other side (thankfully there were no vehicles parked on the other side or any oncoming vehicles) and then shifted to the right but finally managed to bring it back in control. other misc information: i learned about a recall earlier this year related to ecu board programming update from the news media (since i was a new owner, toyota probably didn't have my information so never got recall notice) and i went to the dealer for update. i was hoping software update might also address pothole/loss of break problem but it has not helped. *tr

Design flaw....loss of brake function during braking events while going over bumps and potholes (lower speeds <30mph). i believe the root cause is the transition between regenerative braking and hydraulic brake. i always feel unsafe during braking events, and always have to be proactive and calculate the distance in front of me to accommodate the loss in stop distance . very uncomfortable feeling!

I believe the nhtsa should investigate whether toyota has understated the number of 2010 prius cars with potentially faulty brake accumulator pumps. the company recalled thousands of the cars manufactured between june and october, 2009. my dealer recently told me that my 2010 prius, manufactured in december, 2009 ? just two months later ? has essentially the same problem. they informed me that this is a ?safety concern? and that the pump should be replaced ?as soon as possible,? at a cost of over $4,000. but because my car was manufactured two months after the last cars covered in the recall, they have refused to pay for the replacement. i am very doubtful of the idea that problem affecting my car is different from the defect resulting in the recall. first, the key issue is essentially identical: contaminated fluid that could result in a loss of braking power. second, the car is the same model and year as those recalled, just manufactured a couple of months later. third, this sort of repair ? the need to replace a single, very expensive component less than four years after purchase ? ought to be rare. if it?s not, this suggests a systematic difficulty. *tr

When driving over bumpy or rough surfaces or pot holes, while applying the brakes, the brakes often seem to stop working. and the car seems to have a little boost forward. it happens wherever the road surface has bumpy areas on straightaways or curves. and mostly when applying light pressure to the break, like slowing for an upcoming turn. it has been happening since i got the car in 2013. i have taken it to a mechanic, but they couldn't find the problem. this has happened many times over last 3 1/2 years.

Reversing into my driveway which is a slope driveway. trying to go slow as possible. when try to stop the car with brakes the car did not stop. causing a crashed through my garage door which was close at that time. *tr

I own a 2010 toyota prius which i bought in august 2013. on several occasions, approximately, 4-5 times a week, every time i run over a road bump or path hole at slower speeds (10-20 mph), the car accelerates itself. when i see the bump or path hole, i push the brake pedal to try to slow down but it accelerates instead. this has been happening to me since i purchase the vehicle, the most recent time this happened was today, tuesday, june 3, 2014. today's surge in the acceleration was more than before. i immediately called toyota and reported the incident. i understand this has been an issue since this car was released in 2009-2010 and many other owners reported it in the past. i am concerned for safety reasons, kindly have toyota address this issue as soon as possible. thank you. *tr

Car fails to stop on bumpy surfaces. street under construction was covered with metal plates with bumpy surface (the ridges are arranged in squares and i think are less than an inch high; they are not the plates with a smooth surface). as the car went over the plates, braking failed. the plates ended a short distance before the traffic signal and regular pavement resumed. i was barely able to stop in time. i checked online and i see that other people have the same problem. someone suggested the anti-lock braking system. this happened on s. leimert blvd. approaching vernon, but these plates are all over this part of los angeles. *tr

On october 10th, 2013 at 7 pm, i noticed several brake lights, abs, and sliding sign light came on when i started my car. i thought it was some kind of electrical glitch so i turned my car off and turned it back on. the lights stayed same. my husband who sat on the passenger side looked into the manual book and told me those lights were indicated for brake system. we decided to go home to figure out what we needed to do. as soon as i started to drive, i noticed brake pedal was much lower than it usually is and also noticed brake was not working. my car kept moving even when i pressed the brake all the way. at that moment, i knew i had to take my car to dealer right away. there were no warning signs or noise for a driver to notice before the whole brake system was completely fail to perform. in january 2013, toyota recalled many prius in same model and same yr as mine for total break system failure. even though my vin number was not under their recall list, my car's brake system broke down completely to function due to same reasons toyota recalled many prius 2010 this year. toyota refused to fix my car under their recall system warranty because my vin number is not under their recall list. toyota dealer charged me $4300 to replace the whole brake system for my car and it took 4 weeks to find the parts in north america to fix my car. it cost me another $1000 to rent a car while my prius at toyota dealer to find the parts to fix it. i was fortunate enough that my brake system didn't blow out on me when i was driving 75mph on freeway. i'm sure there are many other prius 2010 have brake system failure like mine even though they were not under their recall list. *tr

Upon braking over a bump, pothole, wet leaves and/or any combination of the aforementioned circumstances, the prius accelerates forward, thus creating a very unsafe driving condition. since i originally purchased the vehicle, it has done this on numerous occasions. i do not feel safe driving this vehicle and am afraid that this braking issue may result in an accident that otherwise would have been a non-issue for any other vehicle. in my 19+ years of driving, i have never had a vehicle do this while braking. i, therefore, implore the ntsb to dutifully carry out its mission statement of protecting motorists by forcing toyota to recall said vehicle in order to properly remedy this issue before preventable accidents occur and lives are potentially lost. *tr

Bought this car certified used from toyota dealer in mid-may 2013. first prius i've owned, and not used to driving it, so the first couple times it 'lurched forward' with the brakes on, i was surprised, but figured it was just related to the 'hybrid'. it happened again last week at a stop sign with rough road - braking, hit bumps, and brakes disappear! took it into dealer this morning, and they're saying it's 'normal'. then i start researching and while car is not included in any recalls, it's the same problem investigated in ntsb 10v039000. exactly! car is still at dealer, as i have asked to speak to service mgr. and just in news today, supreme court is allowing calif 2010 prius owners to sue toyota over a bogus fix for this problem. not sure what to do, but not going to let up on this. half dozen times in 4 months this has happened, and i like the feeling less every time. anything i can do? (when you all get back to work). *tr

This happened more then once, all pretty much the same way. while driving approximately 30 mph, applying the brakes coming to a stop and traveling over a rough road the brakes feel like they release and the vehicle does not stop. after the vehicle passes the rough are i have to release the brakes and reapply pressure to the brake peddle for the vehicle brakes to reengage and stop the forward momentum. last month when i took the vehicle to dealer in olympia wa, i asked them to check for any recalls and make a note of the issue. this issue has almost cause an accident. *tr

Coming to a stop light, i applied the brakes. this has been an ongoing issue with my car that when applying the brakes and a bump in the road is detected, the car supposedly switches to abs braking. the net effect of it is that the brakes temporarily disengage causing the car to accelerate for a brief period until you reapply the brakes and eventually come to a stop. so as a result, the from the moment you apply the brakes to the time you stop, there is a "lurching forward" of about 5 feet under which you have no control over the car. that is quite scary since if per chance a person were crossing the road while your car hit a bump in the road, your vehicle could theoretically hit the person before the brakes had a chance to kick in. i've checked the blogs and have noticed that people with priuses from various years have reported the same problem. i noticed this problem early on in my ownership of the car, and actually asked the dealer to fix the problem. they reported to me that everything was working properly. i then asked them to test drive it for a while to reproduce the problem. they had my car for a week and supposedly were unable to reproduce the problem. there was an abs recall by prius and they supposedly applied the fix to my car, but i have since noticed the same issue. *tr

Received safety recall notice from toyota motor sales usa. made appointment with libertyville toyota (autonation toyota libertyville in libertyville, illinois), the dealer from whom i bought the car. on 9/13/13 libertyville toyota inspected my vehicle and advised me that the serial number on the brake booster pump assembly was on the recall list that required replacement. i was told none were in stock but it should take 2 or 3 days for the order to come and that i would be phoned "around the middle of next week." no call came so i phoned libertyville toyota on 9/24/13. the receptionist directed my call to the parts department. the parts person who took my call told me that the part was not in their stock and that there was no estimated time of arrival (eta) for the part. he said he had no idea whether or when the part would be available. i asked to speak to the manager so he transferred me to the service manager ([xxx]). [xxx] didn't pick up so i left a fairly detailed message and asked him to call me back. it's now 9/30/13 and i have not been called by [xxx] or anyone at libertyville toyota. in the meantime i'm driving a vehicle that is subject to a safety recall, the severity of which i have no idea, and i'm planning a trip with the vehicle that will entail approximately 3,000 miles of driving. what am i to do? information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Exiting from the highway, i slowed while i approached a stop sign. as the prius went over a bump, deceleration was interrupted. the prius momentarily seemed to lurch forward; but within a short time braking resumed. this is disturbing car behavior. if there was a car directly in front of me, i would have hit it. *tr

2010 toyota prius. consumer writes in regards to unsatisfactory customer service at dealership. *smd the consumer felt she was dealt with in a cavalier, disrespectful manner with no regard for her time, after making an appointment at the dealer for a recall issue. the vehicle was not ready at the time she was promised it would be.

Braking power is not consistent. car is hard to stop. need to push the pedal really hard to stop at speed. this started to get worst after the recall. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact stated that the vehicle was included in and repaired under nhtsa campaign id number: 13v235000 (service brakes). after the repair was performed, the contact was driving approximately 25 mph when the brake pedal was abnormally traveled to the floor board, and the brake and abs light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where the technician stated that the brakes would have to be bled. the brakes were bled however, the failure persisted. the dealer also replaced the brake booster and master cylinder twice. the brake power stroke sensor was also replaced but none of the repairs were able to correct the failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 93,000. updated 12/24/13*lj

While braking over an uneven surface coming up to a stop light, the car lurched forward, causing it to seemingly accelerate into the crosswalk. i was coasting up to the stoplight and applied the brakes closer to the light, as the car was traveling over the uneven surface. the uneven surface was caused by raised metal plates covering road construction. the vehicle was traveling about 5-10 mph and decelerating at the time of the incident. this has happened with regular consistency even though the car got the software fix within a few months of purchase in 2010. it mostly happens decelerating over potholes in the road, when going from coasting (regenerative breaking) to applying the brakes by foot. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius.the contact stated that while driving 25 mph over a road bump and the vehicle lunged forward abnormally. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection but they could not diagnose the cause of failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 36,000.

Every time i run over a road bump at slower speeds (10-20 mph) with light tap on the brake to slow down, the car accelerates itself at the top of the bump. when i see the bump, i push the brake pedal to try to slow down but it accelerates instead at the top of the bump. i called toyota dealer service dept and reported the incident. i am concerned for safety reasons. thank you. *tr

I was driving car about 25 miles p h and sandalee the abs lights came up and its was ready hard to stop the car somehow break wasn't working properly. *tr

This incident has occurred twice under identical conditions, in the same location. the car did not engage the brakes until approximately one second after i depressed the pedal. maybe the computer's electronic stability control is involved in the problem, even though the car did not indicate that electronic stability control was engaged. both times i was driving on a slight downhill at ~20 mph. immediately after i passed over some bumps, i depressed the brakes, and there was a significant delay in the brakes being engaged (1s). i think the bumps in the road are involved in this issue. of note, this car underwent an update to its software program following a recall involving braking problems, and these incidents occurred after the update. *jb

This is related to report receipt date: feb 09, 2010 (i bought the car used in may, 2013). nhtsa campaign number: 10v039000 component(s): service brakes, air - this happens all the time when the conditions are right. i complained to toyota at the time that this car should have been in the recall list - it does exactly as described in this campaign description...the brakes release when braking over bumps or slippery surfaces. the first time i took it in, they said they could find nothing wrong, and they were 'working as designed'. i called toyota today after reading more about this recall, and they told me i would have to take to service and give them a ride to show them how it happens. i don't understand why this car wasn't included in the recall. any suggestions or assistance? are you still getting complaints about this? *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, the brakes would not respond. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis. the technician stated that nitrogen gas was leaking into the brake fluid. there was a recall under nhtsa campaign number: 13v235000 (service brakes) that could have been related to the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vin was not included in the recall. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 46,000. *tr

On 6-18-13 at 9:45 am, at nj turn-pike south , milestone 108.3, newark, nj. i ,owner of the toyota prius 201, driving at 45 mph pushed the brake pedal to the floor to stop but could not . i hit the back of the vehicle front of me suddenly stopped. my 2010 prius was total lost in this accident. according to the toyota 6-4-13 recall announcement, my 2010 prius in the recall list is equipped with a brake pressure accumulator that may develop a fatigue crack on an internal part due to vibration that caused my failure to stop completely in this car rear-end collision accident on 6-18-13. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact stated the brakes failed to engage while driving 55 mph on an exit ramp. the vehicle eventually stopped by depressing the brake pedal with force. the vehicle was driven to the dealer for diagnostic testing which confirmed that the brake power booster pump was leaking internally. the manufacturer advised that the vehicle was not included in the nhtsa recall campaign number 13v235000 (service brakes). the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 46,000.

Slowly passed over a speed bump, which caused a brief sensation of acceleration (common in this prius). then braking was significantly affected, with brake travel quite long and stopping power diminished. all brakes warning lights came on and stayed on. problem continued until i stopped the car and turned it off. when car turned on, warning lights remained but went out after depressing brake. took to dealership. told that brake booster pump needs to be replaced. vin is outside the range given by toyota for recall published on 6/5/13. however, symptoms are identical for this vehicle. i'm concerned that toyota may not be including all vehicles that are affected by this problem in its recall plans. *tr

When hitting larger size potholes or bumps in the road i lose control of what feels like the rear end, its as if the vehicle brakes gives way when the rear tires hit the object, car shimmies slightly, the brakes stop working for at least 3 seconds as the car lurches forward. the brake also depresses further to the floor while it happens. there's a particular spot on my way to work that continues to cause the problem. its heading down a small declining hill before a turn to the left. if i were to tailgate someone and have that happen i would surely hit them because there's no control of the vehicle for a few seconds after hitting the object. this object goes straight across the 2 lanes as if the concrete paving was poured too high in a long horizontal line. i think it has to be above a 4-5 inches or so because i'll hit smaller ones and i'm fine and i've tested it on different objects, its higher raised items causing the behavior. it happens when its dry, wet or icy out, but you have to be applying the brake to really feel it as far as i can tell. my passenger also felt the loss in control each time this has happened and its been numerous since owning the vehicle. *tr

I'm a owner of a 2010 toyota prius. i almost crash into another car, due to the brake system of this vehicle. i had to drive off the road pavement to avoid the car accident. i had multiple times near miss car accidents before reporting this issue. due to the very poor braking system on this vehicle. the brake response is very poor. in a quick reaction for braking, this car's brakes will not stop in time to avoid accident. after a recent close car accident 6/3/2013, i have to give a lot of distance between my car and other cars for braking in time to avoid a car accident. as a buyer purchasing a new car, the braking system is a number one priority for safety for a family owned car. i purchase this car for a fuel gas saving car, but it's scary driving this vehicle. due to very poor brake system in this 2010 toyota prius. toyota company needs to recall the braking systems for all 2010 toyota prius. it's needs to be checked and fix for better braking quality. i want to sell my 2010 toyota prius, due to this issue of braking, but i can't sell this car due to i still have to pay off my auto loan. my family fears for my safety and other toyota prius owners out there. please someone look into this matter. i fear for my family's safety due to this problem. As we were driving the car down a hill we began to feel a jerking in the brakes. as we drove onto the ramp to the highway, warning lights and a buzzer went off and the brakes failed. every 15-30 seconds my husband, who was driving my car at the time, said he had a little bit of braking for a couple seconds, and then he didn't have any brakes again. *tr

In the past (starting at 2,800 miles) and reported numerous times to the dealer (huntington toyota), toyota corporate and the nhtsa, whenever the car went over a rough road service while braking at about 10 miles an hour the regenerative braking would cut out and give the sensation of the car surging forward requiring much greater braking effort to bring the car to a stop. the brakes would reset after a full stop and they would act normally until the next time braking was done on a rough road surface. toyota claimed that this was normal behavior for the prius abs system, even after the firmware upgrade was applied. this time the brakes did not reset after a full stop and every warning light on the dashboard lit up. there was no regenerative braking available. the car was brought to the dealer who has had it for more than a week, and is replacing major brake system components under my extended warranty. i was told that without the warranty these repairs would have cost me over $4500. this has been an ongoing and dangerous situation, which may be finally resolved after all of the brake component replacements. as an aside, the brake pads show significant and unusual wear because the regenerative braking did not work as it should. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact stated that while driving 35 mph, the contact applied the brakes then the pedal went to the floor and the vehicle failed to stop. the contact pumped the pedal and eventually the vehicle stopped. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where the contact was informed that the brakes needed to be replaced. several days later the failure recurred. the vehicle was returned to the dealer and the contact was informed that the master cylinder and the brake booster would need to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer had not been notified of the failure. the failure and current mileage was 144,000.

Brakes failed while driving. pedal went to the floor. very little braking power left. luckily i didn't have to stop suddenly and was able to bring the car to a stop slowly. had the car towed to toyota dealer where they diagnosed the problem as the brake booster / master cylinder. they told me there was air in the brake system. i received a quote for almost $2900 to fix the brakes. i called toyota corporate office and asked for assistance with this catastrophic brake failure but was refused. searching online found others with same failure. in particular, there was a person with 43k miles with exact same issue, and toyota refused to help him. this is a very dangerous failure and should be a recall. please investigate fully and feel free to contact me for any assistance. i am in the process of replacing the brake booster but i will keep the old one in case you need it for your investigation. i had similar issue on my 2004 lexus rx330 and there was eventually a recall for it. it is unacceptable for a 3 year old car to have this kind of a safety failure. my wife and kids could have been seriously hurt or killed. *tr

On 01 may 2013, i was driving my two daughters home from school and the brakes on my 2010 toyota prius failed. the brake pedal became very stiff and the brakes did not respond. i began to panic because we were traveling down a steep hill. i continued to pump the brakes and suddenly, the pedal gave way and the car came to a screeching halt. i was luckily within walking distance of my house. i had my car towed to the dealership and they informed me that my brake booster and master cylinder needed replacement at a cost of $5500. i'm shocked. my car is 3 years old. after research, i discovered this is a common problem for the 2010 prius. what i find most disturbing is this is clearly a manufacturer's defect, that is an extremely dangerous safety hazard. prior to owning my prius, i was a loyal toyota buyer. i have had consistent acceleration issues with my brakes, even after the recall. if toyota does not address this issue, i don't intend to purchase another toyota product. *tr

First incident: april 15, 2013 i lost my brakes while i was driving home from my night shift work as a registered nurse. i was at an intersection two blocks from my house when i felt the brake was failing. it was a good thing that i was driving slow to make a turn when i felt the brake system was not working. i was able to steer it to a parking lot nearby by using the foot brake. prior to this incident, i heard squeaking noises for about three days whenever i step on the brakes. i was relieved that i did not get into an accident. action after the 1st incident: april 24, 2010. we towed the car to dch toyota freehold, and it took about 5 days to repair the brakes so they gave us a loaner car which we truly appreciate. but when we picked up the car, the brakes were fixed but the squeaking noise is still present, and our windshield was cracked. we called the dealership right away to inform them about the squeaking noise and to complain about the cracked windshield. i was told by the service representative that their technicians tested my car and deemed it safe to drive and that they would never release my car unless they know it is safe to be on the road. second incident: april 29, 2013, i lost the brakes again while i was on my way to work around 7:00 pm. i really got very scared because there was so much traffic at that time. i was able to stop and park my car slowly to the curb without hitting anybody else by using the foot break. action after the second incident: same night, we towed the car back to the dealership for repair, and after a week of waiting, they finally came back to us specifying that the whole master cylinder and brake pad assembly is defective and needs to be replaced and will cost more than 4k for parts alone. contacted toyota about this issue, and they said that they will not assist us, since we exceeded the warranty period. *tr

I was driving to work this morning and a man stepped off the curb right in front of me (not in a crosswalk). i hit my brakes, and hit a pothole in the road at the same time. the car accelerated and felt as if it was shuddering, it was not braking at all even though i mashed the pedal to the floor. i was forced to swerve to miss the man, which i thankfully did. after that i got moving again i applied the brakes and they worked fine. when i arrived at work i tried it again by finding some potholes in the parking lot. @ 15 mph the problem occurred again only when i was hitting the potholes while applying the brakes. i went to toyota.com and found this has been an issue since feb 2010. i purchased my car in nov 2010; i then called my service dealer and talked to the service manager who claimed to have never heard of that problem even though i told him i found the info at the pressroom.toyota.com website. he then proceeded to let me know i should not believe everything i read in the internet and offered to let me bring it in and he will look at it. i am leaving work early today to have it looked at. *tr

In the morning i started my car and the abs light and warning lights came on and started beeping. i reversed my car slightly to check the brakes and noticed my brakes were not being responsive. i put the vehicle into park and called the wondries toyota dealership and told them my brakes were not functioning properly and my abs warning light was on. despite my having informed them of my brake failure, they told me to bring the car into the dealership. i reversed out of my garage, shifted the car into drive, and proceeded down the hill with caution. i did not press on the accelerator. my car began to accelerate down the hill due to gravity and reached a speed of approximately 15 mph, at which time i pumped the brake pedal but the car would not stop or slow down, and it continued moving down the hill. at the bottom of the hill, after traveling approximately 1/4 of a mile, i turned right into a small street with a slight incline in order to stop the momentum. my car slowed and i put on the emergency brake and put the car into park. i called my brother for help. when he arrived, i turned the car on to show him the flashing abs warning. it flashed for about another 15 seconds before suddenly stopping. my brakes then began functioning again though they felt spongy when i pressed down on it. i turned on my emergency lights and drove slowly to the dealership. i parked the car and turned off the engine. when a representative came by, i turned on the car and she pressed down on the brake to feel them. the abs lights suddenly came on again and she said the brake pressure did not feel right and there was something definitely wrong with my brakes. after it was assessed i was informed i needed a new abs actuator assembly and an accumulator pump for the master cylinder. total cost was estimated as $4600. *tr

This has happened several times over the past two years. as i brake at low speeds, the car surges ahead as though your foot is on the accelerator. sometimes it was so subtle, you wondered if it really happened. today (11/23/14) there was absolutely no mistaking it. the car surged forward a couple of feet as i was slowing to turn left. if someone had been stopped in front of me, i would have hit them from behind. *tr

The brake booster pump began running continuously when the vehicle was on. warning lights on the dash indicated brake failure and anti-lock system failure. after i took the vehicle to a toyota dealer, they determined that the brake master cylinder/anti-lock assembly had failed. the repair took two weeks and cost $3000. *tr

I was driving my 2010 prius in a congested area and cars in front of me stopped suddenly. as i braked hard, the car seemed to lurch forward for about one second, maybe longer, and then the brakes kicked in. i noticed that the road was rough. the surface was dry. fortunately, i had allowed ample distance from the car in front of me, and there was no collision, but it was very unsettling. in the previous month, i had three or four less intense sensations of "lurching forward," which occurred when i stopped at a particular intersection when i had just started the car, but the road was smooth. *tr

Experienced a complete brake failure while driving 2010 prius. dealer indicates brake booster failing and leaked nitrogen into master cylinder which should then also be replaced. dealer insist it is one assembly and estimates replacement to be $5,166 ($1,638 for booster and $2,466 for master cylinder). due to the complete warningless failure of brakes while in operation it would seem to a critical safety hazard due to the design flaw in the combined brake booster and master cylinder brake assembly causing a brake failure in operation. *tr

When i try to brake, occasionally, the car jumps forward, instead of stopping. it moves like 6 inches to 12 inches. it happens more often when i try to brake at a stop sign, when the road is rough, or there is a pothole. it gives a feeling of that car actually accelerated instead of slowing, and feels unsafe. *tr

Vehicle has no brakes at all, we turned the ignition on and the car start beeping, brake light its on, abs light on and slip indicator light is on. *tr

Incident #1 brake: on january 17, 2013 as i was entering the intersection about 20mph, i applied my brakes, but they went straight to the floor and warning light started blinking. i pressed brakes very hard and car almost stop, then, its brakes gave up. there is sudden slight "unintended acceleration" and i almost hit car front of me. but, i am able to manage to drove the car into the center island. brake was totally out, and the car started drove by itself. i panicked and pressed power button to shut off the engine. car drove about 15 feet and stopped. after this incident, i tow my car to the dealer, they told me that lost brake is due to short circuit made domino effect to multiple computers malfunction. they will replace whole computer system, but service man would not guarantee it will never happen again. incident #2 power failed and shut down while driving at highway. on december, 2012 and january 2013. i was driving at highway and trying to merge into the center line, car stalled and prompted "key does not detect" message on the screen. i almost hit from behind by another car. while the car still has a speed about 40mph, i managed to restart the car by depressed brake and press power bottom. it is true this car lose brake and does slight "accelerate". *tr

my prius iv, purchased new in 2010, intermittently had a lunging forward problem when going over speed bumps, pot holes etc. i would have to stop it by braking quickly, so i didn't collide with a car ahead. i informed toyota of this problem within the first year. they tested it and said they could find nothing. i mentioned this to them on various occasions when i took the car for its periodic maintenance of 5000 mile intervals. on december 26, 2012 i was stopped waiting to go left when i was rear-ended. i went to pull over to the side of the road to assess the damage. when i accelerated to get to the side of the road, the car took off crazily, at a high rate of speed for about 6-7 seconds, zigzagging uncontrollably on the 2 lane road. if there were cars coming toward me, i would have been in a head on crash. i immediately called toyota service of scranton,pa and asked them to see and assess the car's problem. they made an appointment and concluded.said there is no problem internally, and suggested removing the after market floormat. i then proceeded to show them the same problems many customers are having with the prius , including an article by steve wozniak, the co-founder of apple company, who had acceleration problems with his 2010 prius. i called the main toyota headquarters later, explaining the problem and they too said there is no malfunction , only mentioning the floor mats again.. this is not the case as the car has had acceleration problems from the beginning and to further clarify, i was able to finally stop the car... the mat was no where near the accelerator. i am afraid to drive this for others' safety, my passengers and my own safety. i take care of my cars faithfully. you can view my records. i am also fearful if i trade this car, someone else might get injured or killed. can you please check and advise. *tr

All brakes failed while i was going 69mph on i-75 south just north of the union centre boulevard exit, approaching i-275 at the butler/hamilton county line on sat. dec. 22.. all warning lights came on and the warning "beeps". i was in heavy traffic but was in the right lane and was able to exit on the union centre exit ramp and roll to a stop. this happened the day after i had the car at performance toyota in fairfield, oh for the 35,000 mile check/oil change (on dec. 21) .the car had to be towed to performance toyota on dec 22; they determined the master cylinder failed (lost its vacuum) causing total brake failure. *tr
