Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. the contact stated that upon starting his vehicle and backing out the driveway, his power steering ceased to operate. the advanced track warning light illuminated simultaneously as the failure occurred. the contact attempted several maneuvers, such as restating the vehicle and resetting the battery, but to no avail. the dealer had not been notified of the failure. the manufacturer was notified and informed him that his vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v286000 (steering); the contact was then referred to nhtsa to file a vehicle safety complaint. the vehicle had not been repaired. the failure mileage was 126,405.

Getting off ramp turning to my right the car was hard to true steer lost control

Steering become hard cant move the wheel or make any turn... and the light of service power steering and service advance trac came on. i almost have a accident do to this problem.

Vehicle while driving can lose signal to the electric gear box for the power steering. causing a loss of power steering. car display reads "power steering fault".

My wife was driving and somehow the car stop steering. very hard to turn in curves and while driving slow. message came up on dash board about steering default.

I have received carbon monoxide poisoning from driving my 2013 ford explorer. i also have had the front end looked at and repaired had to pay most of the costs (extended warranty paid for some) for the front end popping sounds while turning. the sound is still there and on both sides now. so money wasted towards ford!! the vehicle isnt drivable at this point and that leaves me without a vehicle.

On 2 separate occasions the truck loses power while driving. this effects the engine, power steering basically anything that uses power. this has happened while driving 65mph and 35-40mph. one time it happened on a street, the other time was while driving on the highway. this is very dangerous.

Complained of faulty power steering error message coming on when starting vehicle for 1.5 years to ford dealership with no exact response regarding the issue. they said they reset the system and it should work fine afterwards. the next day i still had the issue. i then complained again about it but it was in the shop for numerous issues and that was overlooked/ignored. my power steering has now gone out completely and the recalls for the power steering ended for explorers manufactured after feb. 2012 and mine was manufactured in dec. 2012. i asked if the dealership was required to report issues when customers bring their vehicle in to the shop and they said no. they are only reqiured to report them when they repair it or do work to it, not just assess that there is an issue. lesson learned, always report your issues here. my power steering could have gone out while driving but thank god it didn't. it went out as i was paying a bill and had turned my car off for less than 2 minutes. therefore, the vehicle was stationary. it is incredibly frustrating that they want me to pay for something that is a known ford issue and that my car is currently not able to be driven. much less, i have complained about the issue and they could have prevented it by letting me know the power steering fault is common and to get it repaired sooner rather than later to prevent a wreck.

On the 14th of january 2020, while driving on the freeway, my truck began to sway as if my alignment was off. a short while later, the service power steering warning light came on and as i struggled to steer the vehicle to a stop in a nearby parking lot, the warning changed to service power steering now! this was very dangerous because steering became extremely difficult and i almost side swiped a couple of cars. after i brought the vehicle to a stop, the steering locked up and steering became impossible. the vehicle was towed to a near by ford dealership.

Power steering gear failed as a result of corrosion due to poor coating

Steering assist faulted while driving nearly causing an accident.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. when the engine was started, the power steering assist indicator illuminated and the steering wheel became difficult to turn. the contact was able to drive the vehicle home. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was contacted and stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v286000 (steering). the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 313,286.

While driving 70mph with my kids in the car the power assist light came on. i lost all control of the power steering. luckily i was able to drive to a safe spot using much strength to do so. 2013 ford explorer 74,700 miles.

I am experiencing the same steering problems as the explorers in the recall, yet my 2013 explorer is not part of the recall. the recall is- nhtsa campaign number: 14v286000. i believe the population of the recall should be expanded.

About two months ago the steering was getting tough with little noise like clunking, took the explorer to a ford dealer was told my front struts needed changed. had that done, did not fix my steering problem. said my vin was outside of the recall ford had on the steering rack. now just yesterday i start my car and my steering wheel is stuck no movement. turned it off and back on and got movement but no power steering it's a manual. warning lights came on 1. "service power steering now" 2. "service advance trac". also noticed my turn signal will not stay engaged must hold in place to signal.

Steering went out while driving making a right turn. power assist light came up when power steering gave out.

Received a message on my dashboard " power assist fault", the steering was stiff and could not turn. turn off the car for 10 minutes and the steering was functioning ok. later in the afternoon, i was about to hit the gas pump as my steering went stiff again. now am scared that this may cause accident

Just today i viewed online to check for any recalls due to my passenger side heat not working....by viewing online i was notified of a recall that should have been fixed on my vehicle that i was not notified about, and was wanting to get this issue fixed as soon as possible. the issue is it states the last date to fix was in august.

Occasionally the power steering assist failure light would come on. i could kill the engine and restart it and it would return to working. however now the warning light is on and won't go off. the power steering will not work at all.

Steering wheel locked up twice in 2 days when started and displayed a warning "power steering assist default". the car had to be restarted. this is a serious problem that ford refuses to fix on our vin.

Failure of electronic power steering system. i had turned my car on and the fault happened immediately. previously when this would occur i would restart my car and the error would resolve. this time this did not clear the error.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. while driving 40 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn and an unknown warning indicator illuminated. the contact was able to drive home and associated the failure with nhtsa campaign number: 14v286000 (steering). the vehicle was taken to two different independent mechanics who stated that the steering control module and the rack and pinion unit needed to be replaced. the vehicle was taken to jack madden ford (located at 825 boston-providence turnpike, norwood, ma 02062, (781) 207-9009) where it was diagnosed that the steering control module and rack and pinion unit needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was informed of the failure. the failure mileage was 90,000.

Steering recall 14s06 ,my car, was manufactured 14 march 2012,,, there is a recall that included the exact same issue including the advancetrac and service power steering soon problem on explorers manufactured at the same plant until 28 february 2012,,,,, i get there has to be a line but they are unwilling to accomodate a faitful customer. looking through the rest of nhsta there are extensions of the electric assist reprogramming to correct the advancetrac computer problem til 2023 however only if the explorer was under the 28 february 2012 original recall. again my car came off the line, 14 march 2012. i have gotten nowhere with the customer service 800 number except were sorry you are experiencing the same exact symptoms as the cars manufactured two weeks prior to yours in the same plant, but we have to draw the line somewhere and the problem is probably related to something else. the dealer has some resources to work with you but you need to speak to them. mean time i have not heard from the local customer service rep ed, this case was opened last week and the vehicle is sitting in my driveway hoping to hear positive news about the computer issue after spending tmy own $1200 to replace a part that should have clearly been covered in this recall 14s06 i cannot drive it since i got it into my driveway with those two messages (both advancetrac and service power steering soon) in the dic,,, i got home and shut off restarted, no steering , i reparked it in the driveway with "zero assist" i assume it will need to be towed to the next location.

Steering locks up while driving have to slowly put on brakes to stop shut motor off and restart vehicle. sometimes when you get in and start vehicle, steering will not unlock when vehicle is started but will move forward and backwards with steering locked have to turn key off and restart vehicle to unlock steering. sometimes steering unlocked up in cold weather and have to turn on engine and floor heat for 45 minutes to unlock steering. after several times of steering locking up without error message on dash now error messages hill descent control fault and service advanced traction are flashing on dash. this has been happening for about two weeks between 10/29/2019 and 11/12/2019

The power steering in my car stopped functioning while i was driving. the dash said there was a power steering fault. i was able to pull the car to the side of the road, and turning it on and off seemed to reset it, and i was able to continue on. by research, this is common in 2013 explorers, and was a recall, but not on my vin. it is going in for repair within the week. it appears the recall needs to be expanded to include more models. this is a safety hazard!

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. while driving 55 mph, the steering seized without warning. the contact managed to veer to the shoulder of the road and turned the vehicle off and back on, which failed to reset the steering wheel. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the power control module failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the vehicle was taken to friendly ford (2250 south rd, poughkeepsie, ny 12601, (845) 462-1900) where a second diagnostic test was performed and determined that the power steering control module needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 14v286000 (steering). the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the vin was not selected for the recall. the contact was advised to call nhtsa to file a complaint. the failure mileage was approximately 65,000.

With the car parked overnight, i started the vehicle and put the transmission into reverse to exit my driveway. there was a loss of power steering. "power steering assist fault" alert on dashboard. drove it for about 250 meters with no power steering, stopped, powered off the vehicle, started it back up, still had limited power steering, and additional alerts including "service advance trac" with esc off lights. drove for a about 100 meters and power steering assist resumed. this has happened previously with another driver, so it isn't an isolated incident.

My wife was driving down a back road by our house with our 3 children in the back and myself as a passenger. the vehicle while traveling at roughly 40mph had a light flash that read service advance trac. she then lost all power steering and could not pull off the road. she could only brake. we shut the vehicle off and turned it back on. it regained steering for a few miles and then it happened again shortly after in a parking lot. it is now at the ford garage to get looked at. it is super dangerous especially if she was traveling around a turn. it has 50000 miles on the vehicle

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. while driving approximately 20 mph, the power steering suddenly malfunctioned and the steering wheel became very difficult to turn in either direction. the vehicle was towed to all american ford in old bridge (3698 u.s. 9, old bridge, nj 08857) where it was diagnosed that the steering wheel control module was faulty. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 110,000. the vin was invalid.

Upon starting the vehicle the warning indicator "power steering assist failure" message appears and there is no power steering. turning off and restarting sometimes resets the warning and power steering will return but not always. there is a current recall with the same problems (14s06) but my vin falls outside the manufacture date. reached out to fomoco and they verified there are no recalls and there have never been any recalls for my vin. one month ago i received a recall letter from ford for a different issue that i had fixed under the recall by ford. that recall didn't show up in fords database either for my vin when i called today but yet it existed and was fixed. odd that the same power steering problem keeps occurring on vehicles but ford wont recognize the problem because of a build location and date. ford doesn't engineer us spec vehicles based on their manufacturing plant, they seem to be saying that the same engineers that designed a faulty electric power steering motor for chicago didn't design a faulty motor for another plant. or the original "fix" didn't real "fix" the problem.

While driving (second incident, it was repaired by ford motor vehicle for the same thing last year) my steering wheel became uncontrollable. the vehicle kept pulling me to the left, i almost had a head on with the oncoming vehicle. i was so shook up, i pulled off the road and waited for help. my husband tested it since and the pull is quite noticeable.

I have had intermittent issues with the power steering going out. generally when i start the car. i can usually restart it and it works fine. just recently, the power steering completely failed while driving. it is still not working. just took it in to the ford dealer for repair. they are telling my that my vin# is not part of the power steering recall, but clearly it has been affected by the recall of the ford explorer from 2011-2013.

Electric power steering stopped working and restarted several times while driving on multiple occasions in city and highway turning and going straight forward and now has stopped working completely

Cranked up car this morning and the power steering assist fault light came on. could not turn steering wheel. tried again later and could drive it to the ford dealership 1.5 miles away. they said there's no recall. and it's $2300 to replace the steering gear. has 107000 miles on it

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. while driving 40 mph, the steering wheel seized and the power assist default warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. suburban ford of ferndale (21600 woodward ave, ferndale, mi 48220, (248) 399-1000) was contacted and informed the contact to bring the vehicle in for diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. an independent mechanic came to the contact's residence and informed the contact that there was an unknown recall associated with the failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 112,000.

Power steering assist light turns on which causes loss of steering capability.

Lost power steering. the power steering will intermittently work and you will get a power steering assist fault notice. there is a recall for this issue (15s11) but for some reason this explorer was not included due to the manufacture date. i believe that recall needs to be extended to cover all of the vehicles affected. the vehicle is almost unsteerable when this happens and is not safe to drive.

There is a recall for 2013 ford explorer for power assist power steering failure. my vehicle based on vin number is not included(it is a 2013 as well) i have a power assist power steering failure and ford refuses to acknowledge the issue. i have a case number with ford: cas - 24449952

On the evening of 04oct,2019 my vehicle experienced the failure outlined in nhtsa recall #14v286 (power steering failure). ford needs to expand the number of vehicles covered under this recall as this is a major safety failure that could result in injury, loss of life and/or property damage. ford does not have a policy or procedure on file to deal with vehicle owners like my self i believe that this is highly regrettable and should be addressed as soon as possible. thanks (xxxx) document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. while attempting to turn the vehicle, it became difficult to maneuver the steering wheel as if the power steering failed. the contact stated that she also heard a grinding noise coming from the dashboard area of the vehicle. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the contact spoke with tri ford inc (located at 12610 illinois 143, highland, il 62249, 618-654-2122) and was informed that the vin was not associated with nhtsa campaign number: 14v286000 (steering). the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed that the vin was not included in the recall. the contact was referred to nhtsa to file a complaint. the approximate failure mileage was 94,000.

The car steering stops turning and stiffens while i am still in motion. it is the most terrifying thing ever.

On two separate occasions, to include the morning of september 27, 2019, when the 2013 ford explorer was turned on, an error message stating 'power steering assist fault' appeared on the dashboard screen. the vehicle was stationary at the time of the error message. the power steering was disabled and it was extremely difficult to turn the steering wheel. we contacted ford about the issue and we were told there was a recall for the 'power steering assist fault' for the 2013 ford explorer but our vehicle was not included based on the vin. even though the issues we are experiencing are identical to the recall, we must incur our own expenses to have it fixed. the vehicle currently has 105,000 miles

Sudden power steering failure while driving cruising speed.. car became extremely limited to handle. ford tech verified and pulled code u3000:61 requiring replacement of steering gear.

While driving at normal highway speed, my power steering suddenly failed. the car became immediately unable to drive.

2013 ford explorer ltd started having issues with power steering. warning icons came up on lower right dashboard, showing lack of traction control, then text warnings "service power steering now" and "service advanced trac". after parking the vehicle and trying to use it again found steering essentially locked. steering wheel can be turned with a lot of effort, but vehicle is unsafe to be driven. contacted ford to file official complaint. they maintain their official line that vehicle is not included in recall. i'm the original owner, having bought the 2013 model around oct 2012. have always maintained the vehicle properly. vehicle currently has 177,000 miles, but is currently useless, as i can't even sell it in current state. ford rep's only response (at 1-866-436-7332) was to have it towed to nearest ford dealer, whom will then charge me $135 to "diagnose" a problem they are familiar with and demand around $2k to have it repaired. please advise if there's a chance ford will do the responsible thing and recall these vehicles before more people get killed driving them. i would hat to have to throw away over $40,000 invested in this car.

I was hearing a grinding noise when turning. it got too loud and took it to dealership. they told me that the rack and pinion has to be replaced. it got so bad that i could potentially lose steering control when driving. i'm concerned this is a big safety issue and this failure shouldn't happen in this low mileage. i only have about 77k miles on my explorer and i've been driving it gently.

On august 30th, having driven to the pool a short distance from my house, i was unable to unlock the steering wheel to drive home. i maneuvered the wheel a bit and it unlocked. the next day was a different story. i could not get it unlocked to drive home from the pool no matter what i initially tried. i found in the owner's handbook that i should turn off the vehicle for a couple of minutes then try again. it did work, however the book warned that this could happen while driving and could "cause an accident"...no joke. i took it to the nearest auto dealer who informed me that there was a recall on 2012 and 2013 ford explorers that were experiencing this issue. my ford dealer said that they were sorry but my "vin number" was not covered by the recall. shocked, i have tried every venue to get my $1,973.13 bill from ford and my car rental from enterprise for $624.71 paid by ford with no avail. since my vehicle, 2013 ford explorer, had the same issue of the recall, i cannot understand why mine was not covered.

The power steering went completely out. steering wheel locked up & the turn signal & wipers wouldn't work. at first , i could turn the vehicle off & it would reset but it started happening more often at a low speed or when i would put the vehicle in reverse. it went completely out in august 2019. my particular 2013 ford explored didn't have a recall for this & it cost $2,300 to fix.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. while accelerating from a stop, the power steering failed and the power steering assist warning indicator flashed. cook county ford (1000 s hutchinson ave, adel, ga 31620, (229) 896-7411) was contacted and stated that diagnostic testing would be needed. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and was informed that the vehicle was not included in a recall. the contact was referred to nhtsa to file a complaint. the contact associated the failure with nhtsa campaign number: 14v286000 (steering). the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 125,000. *tt
