Loss of power steering at lower speeds or when stationary with the steering locking out at higher highway speeds causing loss of steering control

Power steering will fail while driving down road. this is a design flaw from ford and they should repair it. this failure is caused by overheating of the electronic assemble in the steering rack. i will sue ford if they do not respond to this complaint.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. while operating the vehicle, the steering wheel suddenly seized and could not be turned in either direction. the failure only occurred while making a right turn. during the failure, the message 'power steering error' was displayed. after turning the vehicle off and on, it resumed normal operation. canton all star ford (17849 1-20, canton, tx) and the manufacturer were notified of the failure. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 45,000.

Vehicle has been through 4 steering racks each time it is replaced the vehicle has left the service shop only to return in less than 24 hours. steering tightens up rendering the vehicle almost impossible to drive. dashboard displays warnings such as power steering failure, service power steering, powertrain lock, etc. this happens while driving. once i was on a back road, once on a highway and once on a service road just miles from the dealership

3 different occurrences while driving my power steering stops working and an error message comes up telling me power assist failure. once while backing out of my driveway, twice while turning in two separate occasions. i contacted ford directly in regards to the recall for this matter to be told since my vin doesn't show any open recalls this has to be paid out of my pocket. i am upset due to the fact i didn't own this vehicle at the time of the recall and i have no idea if this was included or even resolved if it were. i find it highly irresponsible to be told i cannot get a matter repaired that is happening to my vehicle that was specific to a recall and i have no knowledge of it being repaired or not. i can only hope this doesn't happen as my family is traveling down a highway.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. while driving 50 mph, the power steering completely failed. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the contact pulled over, turned off and restarted the vehicle, but the failure continued. the vehicle was taken to chapman ford (1255 columbus ave, marysville, oh 43040, (937) 642-0015) where it was diagnosed that the power steering failed. the contact associated the failure with nhtsa campaign number: 14v286000 (steering); however, the vehicle was not included in the recall. the contact stated that she replaced the power steering module. the manufacturer was notified and instructed the contact to keep all receipts for the repair in the event that her vehicle became included in the recall. the failure mileage was 117,000.

Driving down the expressway going 75mph when we got a power steering fault error. we lost all power steering and traction control. very scary with our 3 small children in the car in the middle of the expressway. called ford and was told that while there was a recall for this issue, our vin was not included. doesn't make any sense since it is the exact same issue that models under the recall are experiencing. ford needs to address this asap. we pulled over, turned off and restarted the vehicle and the fault went away and we regained power steering. thankfully there was not much traffic otherwise we could have been seriously injured in an accident.

While operating 2013 ford explorer on highway at approximately 30 mph the right wheel suddenly turned 45 degrees right causing the vehicle to unexpectedly veer to right towards curb and pedestrian walkway. a visual inspection showed the outer tie rod disconnected from outer tie rod connector without warning. mechanic determined the male thread on outer tie rod "worked" it's way out of the female outer tie rod connector. the metal threads on the end of the tie rod were stripped allowing outer tie rod and tie rod connector to sliding in and out freely without any rotation(loosening/tightening) of tie rod end. fortunately no personal injury was sustained by anyone involved. at time of the incident the vehicle had approximately 40,000 miles and was in excellent condition receiving regular service. i believe the oem equipment on the vehicle is defective and runs the risk of serious injury or death if it were to fail at highway speed. i contacted ford customer service to explain incident and they simply stated the vehicle was out of warranty. they did not seem to be interested in the details of mechanical failure as they did not connect me with a technician. customer service representative told me if they would mark it as a simple tie rod failure and if enough people "complain" they would contact me. out of abundance of caution i replaced both left and right tie rods and tie rod ends to prevent further failure. repairs cost including labor exceeded $750 photos of failed parts attached please contact me for further information/questions.

Malfunction regarding "steering assist fault" keeps showing up. loss of power steering all of the sudden that almost resulted in a crash. i see recalls about steering assist fault but mine is not listed. it has happened in motion and when first starting up the vehicle.

Sometimes the steering locks up even when moving have to shut down engine wait a minute and restart to get some power steering re-activated

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. the contact stated that the power steering assist malfunctioned, which nearly caused a crash. paradise ford (1360 w king st, cocoa, fl 32922, (888) 379-8533) stated that there was no recall on the vehicle and suggested that the power steering assist was faulty. an independent mechanic provided a second opinion and reached the same diagnosis. the manufacturer also stated that the vehicle was not included in a recall or extended warranty. the failure mileage was 92,000.

My steering wheel suddenly became difficult to turn while in motion while turning off the highway resulting in a near collision. i received no interior warning lights or signals alerting me to an issue with the steering.

While traveling in a forward direction on a city street, an alert for power steering malfunction appeared. a few seconds later, the power steering system completely failed and the steering locked up. i was unable to turn the steering wheel left or right. a quick research of the ford explorer power steering resulted with a large forum of people with same problem. the dealer my vehicle was taken to stated i was the second one in a week. a recall was done for this specific item was done, but for all wheel/4 wheel drive only. i feel this particular product is unsafe, especially since the vehicle was in motion.

I experienced a total loss of power steering. it began as a little play in the steering wheel near the end of an 8 hour drive. the service power steering now light came on at that point. after parking the vehicle and restarting the vehicle there was no power steering at all.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. while driving 30 mph, the power steering and traction control warning indicators illuminated. the contact stated that the steering wheel became difficult to turn. the contact was able to park the vehicle on the side of the road. the vehicle was not drivable and was towed to d-patrick boonville ford (located at 3100 in-62, boonville, in 47601, (812) 897-5838) where it was diagnosed that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. the dealer associated the failure with nhtsa campaign number: 14v286000 (steering). the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 135,000.

Vehicle has 74,200 miles on it. power steering is failing intermittently. i have been noticing that under minor steering movements (lane changes or minor curvature in road) i understeer due to intermittent loss of power steering assist for approximately 1 second. when power steering comes back oversteer and end up swerving vigorously due to assist returning. it has created a dangerous situation many times in the past couple weeks can easily create complete loss of control of vehicle at speed.

Power steering failed while driving on a city street.

Cranked up explorer and received power steering assist fault about a year and a half ago. called dealership to check on recall or see what this was about. we were told that there was no recall and by turning the explorer off and on again usually fixes the problem this did at that time. then it happened again a couple months later and did what they said because they told us it was not communicating correctly. it has not happened again for a while until today when trying to do that five times it did not communicate but this time it gave the same power steering assist fault and a service advancetrac message. lucky this happened in a parking lot and my wife and kids were not in the car. had to haul the vehicle out of parking lot to my house for the time being until i can get an answer on what needs to be done. i did see that there was a recall on this same issue a while back after doing some research. lucky for me and my family every time these issues have popped up the car has been stationary.

When i turn the wheel in my vehicle it makes a loud clunk noise and also when i apply my brakes. i looked up all ford explorer recalls and noticed one in 2014 that has to do with the electric power assist system. how can i know if my vehicle was on the recall list being so long ago and can this be covered under that recall? i see alot of complaints involving this same issue. i bought the car used in 2017.

Our power steering went out on our 2013 ford explorer while my husband was driving. luckily he didn't crash the car when it happened because it immediately made it difficult for him to use his steering. the steering is completely out and needs to be fixed. i checked if there was a recall and his car is just outside the manufacture date for the recall that was done in 2014 on 2011-2013 ford explorers. we are now out of pocket over $2000 because we have to replace the rack and pinion. also, when i called ford regarding this problem i was told if there is a recall on the part in the future i would not be reimbursed and should wait to have it fixed until there is a recall.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. the contact stated that the steering wheel was extremely difficult to turn in either direction and the eps warning indicator randomly illuminated. scott ford (17812 veterans memorial hwy, kingwood, wv 26537, (304) 329-3673) was urgently notified, but failed to provide an appointment. the contact ordered a steering rack and had an independent mechanic replace the part, but the failure recurred. the dealer was notified and provided an update to the control module. within two business days, the eps indicator flashed again and the steering wheel seized, which increased the risk of a crash. the vehicle was unable to be safely driven. astorg ford lincoln of parkersburg (2028 7th st, parkersburg, wv 26101, 304-485-8585) was notified of the failure for further diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was notified of the failures numerous times, but had not yet provided a remedy. the approximate failure mileage was 68,000.

While driving, the steering became extremely difficult. the power steeling and stability control lights came on with a warning. the power steering failure nearly caused an accident. the vehicle was on a city street and the power steering failed while turning.

The power steering failed as i was starting to turn. i was letting off the brake and barely pressing the gas pedal and as i started to turn the wheel, a warning message popped up stating that the power steering assist had failed. i could still turn the wheel (with quite a bit of effort) , so i completed my turn very slowly and moved off to the side of the road. i turned the car off and on again and the power steering worked again. after that, the power steering failed 5 times while i was backing up. each time i turned on the car, put it in reverse, then as i would let off the brake and just touch the gas pedal and start to turn, the steering wheel would seize up and the power steering assist failure notice would pop up. turning the car off and on again would correct the problem. brought it into the ford dealership and this is not covered under warranty or recall.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. while operating the vehicle, the power steering failed and the power steering indicator illuminated. the contact was able to drive the vehicle home. the vehicle was towed to scaffidi auto (3733 stanley st, stevens point, wi 54481, (715) 344-4100) where it was diagnosed that the steering gear needed to be replaced. the repair would cost $2,300. the manufacturer stated that there were no recalls and referred the contact to nhtsa. the warranty provided coverage up to 150,000 miles. the failure mileage was 150,246.

Hi i have recently purchase a 2013 ford explorer with only 67,000 miles on it. the power steering assist is not working and i have no steering at all. i have looked on line and there are several recalls for this very same issue but upon calling a ford dealer, they said my vehicle vin# is not listed in the recall. i don't understand how my car specifically is not listed as part of the recall when i have read alot of people have the same exact issues and their vehicle is in recall. i also have a friend who has the very same vehicle with the same issue and his explorer was recalled. i think this is a known defect from ford but fail to list all 2013 explorer with this same recall which can be fatal during driving and having your steering wheel lock up on you. my explorer only have 67,000 miles and this should not happen unless its a defect. any assistance in this major issue would be very appreciated or any direction you can advise me would be great. thank you.

2013 ford explorer parked in a parking lot for one hour after being driven 2 miles at 9:30 a.m. on first start on a 95-degree day. on starting one hour later, 10:30 a.m., the car started, it was shifted into reverse, but on holding the steering wheel to make a slight turn while backing up from the parking space to leave, the steering wheel was completely frozen and would not move at all. i could not steer the car. i shifted into drive and let the car drift back forward into the parking spot. steering wheel completely frozen, would not move. shifted the car back into drive and the car moved forward on its own, shifted into reverse and the car again moved a little, but i could not move the steering wheel at all. this error message appeared on the dash: power steering assist failure. turned off engine, left it off 5 seconds, restarted, and power assist steering failure code did not come one. i drove the 2 miles home, praying the power steering would not go out and freeze up again while being drive. 3 hours later the car is operating normally so far, but a complete power steering failure is life threatening and could reoccur in this vehicle at any time, resulting in injury, death, and damage to the car. ford has acknowledged this problem in 2011 ford explorers and issued a recall. as my 2013 explorer has the same epas problem, ford needs to issue a recall and repair the problem at no cost to the owners. i have read online of owners having the power steering fail during turns, resulting in injuries. this car is not safe to drive in its current condition.

Power steering failure. happened while driving down the foad.

While driving down the highway my power steering assist failed making my car very unsafe to drive.

Loss of power steering and "service power assist" light along with another warning light. built in june, i'm not covered by recall #14s06.

On 5/19/20i was driving my ford explorer down the road 45 mph posted limit was driving fine then in motion my message center alert came on saying power steering fault service now my tryck has less then 80000 miles on it i managed to get it off the road to a parking lot aftering struggling to turn the steering wheel once i parked it i shut the vehicle off then waited 2 minuted before starting it when it came on the message alert came on but this time it saying power steering fault service now when attempting to turn the steering wheel it was very hard i managed it home and parked it till the nxt day monday 5/20/19. i took it to the dealer and there telling me my vin is not on the recall list for 2011 to 2013 ford explorer which it is experienceing the same problem and have to pay out of pocket over 1000 dollars which i dont have please help my manufacture dat was 3/2012 ford my 2013 explorer.

I was driving on sunday, may 19th. my steering was fine when all of a sudden my dash started to light up. power steering loss and then it said advanced traction fault. i don't even know what that means. so i tried to pull over and noticed i couldn't even move my steering wheel is was so hard to turn. i pulled to the side of the street and was able to get my vehicle towed into the repair shop down the street. they took one look at it and said there is an electrical fault with it and it is a recall on the ford explorer. so he gave me the recall number and i had the truck towed to the ford dealership where i purchased my vehicle. they looked at it and said it's not part of the recall! even though my vehicle falls within the date range of being assembled and it is a 2013. the dealership will not cover it and now they want $2,430 to repair. i read the whole recall and my truck did what the recall said it was doing. i have had nothing but problems with the truck since the day i bought it. it was only 2 years old when i bought it and i had to bring it back a week later as the catalytic converter was bad. one & a 1/2 years later i had to replace the cc again and just last summer it is now on it's third cc. i am so tired of pouring money into this vehicle but i don't have a choice because it is bleeding me dry. please help on this as it seems there are many ford owners in the same boat as me. i have to put the $2,430 on my cc again and hope to get reimbursed for this recall. it's so sad that they will not admit that this truck is not what it was sold to be, a reliable vehicle. i will not buy a ford vehicle ever again!

Power steering failed and reverted to manual steering while operating the vehicle on a city street. "power steering fault" message displayed in the instrument cluster center. i was able to drive to vehicle to a safe location, although it was quite difficult. if my wife had been operating the vehicle under the these same circumstances, it would have been extremely hard for her to maneuver the vehicle, which could have resulted in accident. also, we have small children that could have also been on-board which makes this issue all the more concerning, since this vehicle is mainly used to transport children to and from school. after driving to a parking lot, i turned the vehicle off and then back on. the power steering re-engaged and i was able to drive home safely without any further issues. i immediately called the local ford dealership and scheduled a service appointment. the dealer scanned the power steering control module for codes and found a diagnostic trouble code that requires replacement of the steering gear. total cost for parts and labor was $2,000. the vehicle was repaired and we have not experienced any other issues with the power steering. it should also be noted that the vehicle was purchased new from the dealership and currently has approximately 74,500 miles. i was informed by ford customer service that my vin number wasn't part of any recall and there were no other programs available to assist me with the cost of the repair. per my online research, there is a recall on this issue for the year of my vehicle, but it appears my build date is outside of the recall. this is not acceptable. it makes no sense why certain vehicles are excluded, when the issue has clearly been identified and addressed in other vehicles built in the same year. i am requesting that the nhtsa investigate the issue described above and issue additional recalls.

My car experienced a complete loss of steering. the power steering module did not allow manual input and the steering wheel was locked in place and would not turn at all. the problem started gradually making a popping sound when turning the wheel. it then changed to a grinding sound and the steering would get stuck and then pop loose. i experienced this on a trip out of town when i was driving at highway speeds driving back home. i stopped for gas and when i got back in the car it said "service power steering" then a few minutes later said "service power steering now". before all of this happened there were no error messages or service messages displayed. the ford dealer in topeka, ks identified the rack and pinion and worm gear as the fault and none of the technicians know why no manual input was being accepted by the car to turn the steering wheel even a little bit. i feel like this should have been covered under the recall 14s06 from 2014 but apparently my vehicle was manufactured a few days after the dates that ford defined in that recall. i am out over $3000.00 for the repair, towing, ride to get to the rental car 100 miles away, rental car, and shipping of my truck after repair to my home. all i want ford to do is admit that the dates that they put on the recall were not inclusive of all vehicles that were affected.

Power steering loss for the 2nd time, even after dealership inspection. claimed to not be a apart of 2013 recall list.

Power steering went out as i was driving down the road. dealership says throwing out codes for ford recall # 14s06. they said my car was not in recall since it was built in may of 2012. ford customer service was no help.

Power steering assist fault.. while operating a vehicle fault comes on steering gets hard hard to control causing my wife to almost get to an accident. it only comes on once in a great while to reset its you have to shut the car off and turn it back on it only happens in the morning when she's taking the kids to school it's rare but it's happened four times already

Steering is hard to steer. feels like you have no power steering. doesn't happen all the time just when you turn the steering wheel when driving slow. also paint on the hood peeling off. took to a garage for the steering and they say it's a known issue but no recall.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. while driving 30 mph, the steering failed and the electric power steering warning indicator illuminated. the contact scheduled an appointment with gullo ford of conroe (925 interstate 45 s, conroe, tx 77301, (281) 367-0000). the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 106,000.

As i was driving on the freeway, my power steering sensor flashed on the dash saying to service power steering soon. about 5 minutes later i found myself battling to change lanes and turn all together. my power completely cut out while driving doing speeds of up to 50 mph. ive never had an issue or even a warning beforehand. the recall needs to be extended to my make and model as my vehicle was produced 30 days short of the recall.
