Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer

When driving our vehicle from myrtle beach this week we noticed a smell about half way home that reeked of rotten eggs. the smell was so bad that i because nauseous and develooed a severe headache. after we reached our house and shut off the vehicle the next day i tried to crank the vehicle and it would not crank so after researching the smell and possible causes we bought a new battery for the vehicle and changed the battery ourselves which caused my husband to develop a severe cough and upper respitory problems due to the boiling that was occuring inside the battery. hence the smell of rotten eggs.

Accelerating on it's own and idling

The same thing running off the fuse to the cpu grounds out on the body blowing the fuse making it seem like the cpu is bad. i went and started it and put in drive, fuse blew, and the engine shut down

1 owner vehicle - bought in 2004 & had 8 miles on it. has been very well kept & currently has only 65,000 miles on it as of 9/16/19. as others, the electrical cluster has malfunctioned. speedometer quit working over a year ago & now the fuel gauge has failed. problem is with the cluster as "estimated mileage" still works. have noticed that other gauges act erratic at times. this has been an ongoing issue that chevy is well aware of yet fail to act. to tb to dealer for repairs they stated there is no recall. cost out of my pocket for repair will be over $800.00. speedometer originally failed while driving on hwy. it started to work again but failed again while driving on the hwy a few weeks later. fuel guage simply stopped working after starting vehicle.

After starting my 2004 chevy trailblazer the gauges on the instrument panel did not work. but the abs, seat belt, break and check engine lights are on. the indicator for gears is out. the speedometer jumps so not always sure how fast i'm going. i have only owned this vehicle for a short time. but after some research i have discovered that this is a very common problem with this vehicle.

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet trailblazer. while driving 45 mph, the contact detected a fuel odor coming through the vents. the contact mentioned that the check engine indicator illuminated prior to the failure. the contact also stated that the instrument panel did not illuminate and the speedometer did not operate. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the contact was informed that the fuel pressure regulator needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the dealer and manufacturer were not made aware of the failures. the failure mileage was 153,000.

The low beam headlights burn out while driving the vehicle. this has happened 3 times in the last 6 months. all 3 times both low beam bulbs burn out at the same exact time while traveling on a rural road in nh..

My gauges randomly say low oil pressure but there is no problem and sensor was replaced. now the entire instrument panel is dead.

My driving lights turn off and on while im driving i took it to check and they said is a factory problem with electric system but my lights turn off while im driving

Starter relay shorted out and caused a fire in the fusebox. the vehickle was parked and ignition was off.

Pep boys auto parts told me i had a recall on the turn signal switch

Speedometer displays 50 miles per hr and the vehicle is in park and not even moving.

Most of the gauges are very erratic when in motion or stopped. tachometer jumps around, oil pressure reads all over, speedometer goes to zero or full scale, amp meter drops below 14 and lights dim when this happens, (have had the alternator replaced 3 times, this is quite a safety concern for me as i have no idea what to believe on any of the gauges. no repair shop has been able to solve the problem.

Oil pressure gauge drops to zero causing "check gauges" light to come on and engine to stall when the a/c is running and am stopped at a light in the city. this only occurs once during a trip or once a month. understand that trailblazers have a history of gauge problems and electrical issues. chevrolet needs to issue a recall for electrical wiring/gauges.

When turning the ignition switch off from the run position while in park, the switch slips into the accessories position with no effort to turn the key. truck will not turn off of assesoriy position until i wiggle the key for a while. the key can be removed after turning off truck but remains on assesory. happens every time. been doing this for a week now.[8-03-16 to present]

3rd time replacing low beam light only high beam works now low beam out again

Electrical fire started in driver door while truck was parked and not running. it was a total loss.

Driving on hwy 178 at about 9 pm and the front head lights and turned completely off. i moved light switch on and off and my light would not go back no on.....also while driving the kern canyon hwy 178 taking the curves my ingine shut off and steering and brakes locked up this has happened several time while driving at 20 mile speed.

Tl* the contact owned a 2004 chevrolet trailblazer. after plugging in a tire inflator into the cigarette lighter port, the vehicle filled with black smoke. in addition, the contact smelled a burning odor. the contact immediately removed the tire inflator from the port and shut the engine off which stopped the vehicle from smoking. the vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuse box, wiring harness, and various other internal components melted. the vehicle was destroyed. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 155,000.

Upon starting the vehicle the instrument panel does not work properly. the gauge indicators all spike and do not accurately represent what is going on. for example it does not show how fast i'm going or how much fuel is in the vehicle. this is an extreme safety hazard.

Ignition key would not turn off and was locked to "on" position. i had to take it to a local service station where they installed a replaced the key cylinder for the cost of $345. i believe this may be related to the earlier recall of other gm models recalled due to ignition issues. i did not contact the dealer as i needed to get it repaired in a timely manner.

It was raining went to turn on the back wiper blade and all i heard was a pop and the fuse blew, a few miles down the road engine still ran, but check engine light, airbag light, battery light, most of the instrument panel was out, the radio turned off, windows would not open and doors automatically unlocked, got to a safe spot to stop turned the blazer off let it set turned it back on, check engine light still on all the others went out and the windows opened when i hit the button. when one fuse cost 8.00 and blew as soon as i put it in, i can't afford to fix all this, and i am afraid to drive it on the expressway which is how i get to work, just in case of fire or additional problems. *tr

Tl* the contact owned a 2004 chevrolet trailblazer. while at an automated car wash, the driver side window switch short circuited without warning. as a result, flames appeared and engulfed the vehicle. the vehicle was destroyed. a fire report and a police report were filed. both the contact and the passenger suffered smoke inhalation that required medical attention. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the contact was made aware of nhtsa campaign number: 13v248000 (electrical system, visibility); however, the vin was not included. the failure mileage was 180,000.

The speedometer does not work anymore it was showing lots faster before, staring in feb 2015 then just quite a few months ago. the lights will all go really dim for few seconds usually when slowing down then will be normal started about 3 years ago.

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet trailblazer. while at a stop, the contact noticed that the tail lights failed to illuminate. in addition, when the key was turned to the off position, the vehicle remained on. the vehicle was taken to a dealer. the technician diagnosed that both tail light strips needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the failure mileage was 163,000. updated 4/27/15*cn the consumer stated both tail lights failed, the stop light on both sides, and the brake lights. ignition wire was burned. updated 10/9/15*js

Speedometer and other dashboard gauges are getting stuck and no longer operating. i am told that the electrical component - instrument cluster is the cause, i have also been told that this is very frequent occurrence with these gm/chevrolet models. *tr

I have 2004 trailblazer in jan my tach and speedometer have not worked properly ...i cannot afford the 500 dollar plus fix on this vehicle. i have read many complaints in regards to the same situation. apparently no one has taken care of this problem. ifrom my understanding there have been recalls on most other vehicles with the same problem, i do not understand why there isn't one for the trailblazer.please advise what to do. *tr

Speedometer and tachometer. both have not worked properly for a few months now... un safe will be getting it fix unfortunately its going to cost alot of money but will save lives...i have heard many complaints about this same issue did some research and there were quiet alot of ppl w same problems.. something needs to be done to prevent any and all safety issues. *tr

Well i bought this suv used from americas carmart in gadsden alabama.they have a 100 plus lots and advertise good used qualtiy cars..when i bought the suv i wanted to take it to the chevy dealer but was told their on site certified mechanic checked it all out and with the service agreement thought i was ok....had it two days and the transmission went out..the suspension was also an issue then 12/21/2014 ..going past 50 it shook like crazy....and then the transmission was slipping againi purchased a service agreement for $595.00..it covers what my problems are...but the contract says they can use non manufacter parts which is fine...when i brought it to them with the transmission..they put a junkyard salvage transmission with 100.000 miles on it...when i called them in december about the shaking and suspension and the transmission...they said bring it in...i asked them where they were going to take it..they refused to tell me...and i told them i didn't want a junkyard suspension or transmission as per contract was not suppose to happen..i also asked for a certified mechanic to do the work...they said they would see what they could do.i do a lot of driving in tennessee..alot of mountain driving and i was not going to have the front end {ball joints, etc go out there..not real safe..they came and got the car...i thought they were going to fix it as agreed...that was on the 8th of jan..now they say they are going to sue me for the remaining balance....i just want to call attention to this suv as it is not safe..and its my opinion they do this a lot to other people...i wanted to draw this to your attention as i would feel bad if i heard of someone getting seriously hurt..due to their inability to sell quality used cars as they advertise...and believe their practices on repairing these cars with a service agreement gets checked into..i filed a complait w/the ftc and agoffice. *tr

Speedometer does not work in vehicle. stuck in one spot cannot determine what speed is in vehicle. *tr

I was driving this morning 12/16/2014 at 50 mph when i noticed my dash lights, headlights fluctuating also my voltage gauge. no matter what i did it didn't change the state of the problem. the vehicle has had the gauge cluster replaced before i bought it and the battery. *tr

In novemeber 2014 i started the car and i had no gauges(gas, temperature, oil, rpm. mph, and the mileage display) the other electric components worked, like the radio and the small orange light for awd. i took it to my mechanic twice, but it never acted up for him. it happened twice again in december, but it really acted possessed in jan 2015, some of the gauge needles were going round in circles, and some were not moving at all, so we were able to take a video of some of it, and show our mechanic. he called us today and said he is following a lot of burnt wires, and our car could have caught on fire. i thought this potential fire hazard should be reported. *tr

The headlight socket (low beam) on the drivers side melted and nearly caught fire. and the rpm gauge stepper is messing up. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet trailblazer. the contact stated that the low beam headlights turned on and off without warning. the failure recurred on several occasions. the contact also stated that the low beam headlights failed and there was a burning smell in the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the fuse box and wiring burned and needed to be replaced. the vehicle had not been repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 136,000.

Tl * the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet trailblazer. the contact stated that the power window and lock on the driver side door were inoperable. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing, but was not repaired. the vin was excluded from nhtsa campaign number: 13v248000 (electrical system, visibility). the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 192,000. updated 12/09/14*lj

Truck cut off while in park. smelt burning smell, and noticed smoke coming from under the hood. someone raised the hood and noticed the computer electrical box was burning. the cover was melted through from the burning. the vehicle was off and then started back up on it's own. security lights in dash came on. vehicle could not be driven. i read on google website that some vehicles had recalls for electrical problems. a chevrolet place in lynchburg va told the service department where i purchased the vehicle that there were no recalls. that is not what i read on the internet. me and my daughter and 3 others could have died if this vehicle had of exploded. i would really appreciate some help in this matter. thanks *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet trailblazer. the contact stated that while driving at 25 mph, the vehicle lost interior and exterior lighting. the contact stated that the low beam headlights failed which caused the contact to crash into a creek. a police report was filed. the contact was not injured in the crash. the vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vin and failure mileage were not available.

I was driving along on the highway and doing the speed limit. i hit traffic and checked my check my gas gauge and noticed that my speedometer was reading 120 at full stop. i turned off and then back on the truck and the speedometer still pinned at 120. this is a major safety issue and they need to address it. i called chevy and they said that there is nothing they can do, but charge me 900 for a new dash cluster. *tr

Speedometer stopped working, or would show incorrect speed. has continued this problem to current date. *tr

No accident. this is a part recall. i was wandering if there is a recall on the fan control module. i seen where the one i have on my car is replaced with a new type. my fan now only works on one speed. the other 4 speeds will not work. it is very upsetting,it will only work on the 4th speed. i bought one to replace the old one but it will not work on my car. what is the number i should be using. if this is a gm free replacement please send me one. thanks. my husband is a retired gm worker. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet trailblazer. the contact stated that after powering off, the vehicle failed to restart. after numerous attempts, the vehicle was able to restart. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 168,000.

While driving fuel level gauge jumps up and down from empty to full. it stays at what ever level it wants to. you cannot be certain how much fuel is in gas tank at any certain time! *tr

While driving the vehicle it began to smoke. the car wouldn't accelerate so i stopped the car shut it off, popped the hood, and it was engulfed in flames. i grabbed my 2 children out of the car and called 9-1-1 the car was a total loss! *tr

The speedometer gauge went down to 0, while i was on hwy traveling at 55 mph. my speedometer currently isn't working and gas gauge is not working to. why isn't there a recall on this? the lightening will go out to and don't want to come back on some times. *tr

My complaint is that i contacted chevy dealer and advised of so many issues i have had with my vehicle since the purchase mainly most recent is the driver signal light will not come on and it was recalled 2004 recall# turn signal 05v198000 in which they advised me that the campaign has expired and therefore mine cannot be replaced. i have already almost had 3 car crashes because the signal is not working. i do not understand why chevrolet did not replace when it is clear this is life threatening regardless of when the recall was put into force. *tr

Instrument gauge cluster shorting out... started with tach, then oil gauge, now speedometer. seems to be an epidemic with many gm vehicles, other models recalled, clearly a manufacturing issue. gm needs to include trailblazer in recall. *tr

I have a 2004 chevrolet trail blazer. my speedometer hand just stopped working, it is stuck at 120mph. i tried shutting my suv off and turning it on and even unhooking the battery, but it still doesn't work... the dealer said it will cost me $500+ to get it fixed.. why isn't there a recall on this?? i know a lot more people who have replaced the part twice and it still fails out. i am unemployed and have no income at all and it makes it hard on good honest people who need ways of transportation. i think there should be a recall on these. its not that fact that i cant pay for getting it fixed, its just a hazard and could make more problems in the future, like speeding tickets! *tr

I purchased a 2004 chevy trailblazer lt in february 2013. that winter i started experiencing issues with my speedometer needle rising above whatever speed i was going. i took a picture of it saying i was driving 120 mph when i clearly wasn't. so i did my research and found that thousands of other chevy trailblazer owners were experiencing the same problem!! i called chevys customer care line and the representative claimed this was her first time hearing about this and there is nothing they can do to help me. i contacted them via facebook and still not willing to help. as of right now my speedometer doesn't work. i have to use an app on my phone to know how fast i'm going. i can't afford to spend the $500-$800 that it would cost to repair something that is a malfunction on chevys behalf!! i just don't understand how they're getting away with this when thousands of other customers have the same problem!! i will never buy another chevy or gm again!! *tr

The instrument panel failed. the speedometer reads between 60 (at a stop) and >120 (highway speed). the tachometer arm points straight down at all times. i am planning on replacing it myself, knowing a recall will take too long for me to wait because of the obvious safety concerns. i have read many forums and talked to others with gm vehicles around this year. i know of the recall on the 2002 models and it seems gm didn't try that hard to fix future models. please fix this safety concern and save other's money and, more importantly, lives because of this carelessness displayed by gm. *tr
