Problems with 2017 Honda CR-V ENGINE

On average, the 2017 Honda CR-V starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 16 328 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2017 Honda CR-V

Vehicle battery will die after two days of non starting. this happens constantly.

Continuation of complaints 11307119, and 11307127. i called the dealership where i purchased the car new and explained what had been going on with the car. i was told to bring the car in. i took the car in and waited. i was later informed the honda recommended that the plugs be replaced and oil change and a software update. i was later told that i would need to have the injectors replaced and i would have to pay for the repair. i was told they would need to order parts and provided me with a car and i left, it was a friday. monday i went to pickup the car. i was charged $1800 plus for the repair. i left and everything seemed ok but before i got home the alarm engine emission problem came up. next day i called back and was told to bring in and they would look at it again. the message is still there.

Vehicle was driven friday 1/3/2020 in a mix of driving that included thirty-five miles at 70mph+ and secondary trip of ten miles in town that was a mix of traffic lights and slow moving traffic. while driving vehicle in slow moving traffic cabin of vehicle filled with gas fumes, first faintly, but became worse until headache and nausea occurred. vehicle was eventually parked and rested for ten minutes to check oil along with interior air refresh. while checking oil i observed the oil level .75 inches above the full mark on the dip stick with an overall strong odor of fuel. engine operated as it always has, no check engine light, and no evidence of drive ability problems. oil level was also observed to be .75 inches above full mark 11/24/2019 and subsequent photo was taken. oil was changed 1/4/2020 at 50,189 with oil life at 50% with 5,714 miles. prior oil change service occurred at 44,475 miles on 8/27/2019 and the oil level was verified at full line . fuel smells have been noticed in this vehicle since 300 miles on odometer. vehicle was brought to dealer december 12/2017 for fuel smell complaint but no rectification made. 12/2018 the dealer performed tsb 18-114 which included hvac module replacement, and reprogram tcu and pcm, and change oil. after this much anticipated update virtually no change was observed as oil rise and fuel smells continued to occur. during the winter of 2018-2019 oil rise increased .50" above full mark at 5000 mile oil, but premium fuel was utilized consistently. we also observed very few instances of gas smell in cabin. manufacturer has communicated this vehicle does not require premium fuel. this vehicle is driven mostly highway miles, 25 miles per trip at 70mph+. our driving situation contradicts the manufacturer explanation of short trips as cause of excessive oil dilution by fuel.

This is a continuation of complaint 11307119 in which i had to tow car to dealership for service. i received a call after christmas that my car was ready for pickup and there was nothing wrong with it but it was out of gas. i went to pick up the car and was charged $100 plus for the three gallons of gasoline. i got in the car, started it, it was running rough then as i started to leave all the warnings came up again, i pulled back around to the service bay and got the attention of the service rep and showed him the warnings on the dash. he got a technician and hooked up a diagnostic tool but said he saw no codes, so he got a computer and hooked it up and said all he saw was an evap code, but all the warnings were on display. i was told to leave car so they could check further. i left in the loaner. a couple days later i was called and told they would need to tear the engine down to try to find the problem and i would need to approve the work and agree to pay if it were deemed not covered by warranty. i agreed. i was later called and told it needed to have the injectors replaced and it would not be covered and the cost would be $1440. i told the rep the car was not safe to drive and they should continue with the repair.. later that day i called and was told i could pick up the car, i went to get the car and was told it had not been repaired and a note was on service record that the customer had declined to have the car repaired. i was very confused and upset. i commented about my displeasure and concern for safety, i was told i received great service especially since i did not purchase care there. i was also charged $300 plus and the car was not repaired and unsafe. i asked to see service manager but was told he was not in. i paid the bill and left. before i got home the car went into limp mode again and all the warnings came up also.

My 2017 honda began displaying multiple warning messages which would cause the function for the message to be disabled. example, cruise control, not working, hill assist not working and all messages would display and nothing working. usuall the next day the messages would clear and function return. it got more frequent and ultimately did not clear, stayed on constantly. then one day while traveling on a busy interstate highway the vehicle lost power and would not accelerate, before i was able to get to the shoulder of the road i narrowly avoided being struck in the rear by a semi truck and trailer barreling down on me. i did make it off and turned the ignition off waited a short while and restarted the motor. there was a new message in the display "vehicle emission problem" . i pulled onto the road and was able to make it home. this was the weekend and the following monday i called the local honda dealership and scheduled a service appointment. i took the car in and explained what had happened. i waited in the lobby and shortly the service rep told me parts needed to be ordered and i would notified when they came so my car could be repaired, i was also told it would be covered under warranty. a few days i was called and took the car in for repair. i waited and later was told my car was ready. i left and all seemed well until the next day when i was driving to work, all the alarms displayed and the functions in alarm did not work. the car also went into limp mode again and i had to pull over. i called the dealership and was told to bring the car back in. the next morning while going to work the car again lost power and stopped. all the alarms were up including emission system problem, the car would not restart. i called the dealership and told them what happened and i had the car towed in. a loaner car was provided. this was christmas eve.

No problems with engine, until 40,000 miles. i always changed the oil at 3000 miles so it had no time to increase. last week i took a 1200 mile trip, checked the oil when i got home, found it to be well over a quart above full. i called my honda dealer and set an appointment for the 23rd of december.

Oil level rises to above height mark on dipstick. engine power loss. smell of gas in cabin. oil leak because of rising oil level in engine.

Fuel leaking into oil. when checking oil that is not overdue for changing, oil level is well over full and had strong gasoline odor.

The emissions light came on, started to have an odor of gasoline in the cabin, fuel milage has decreased, rough idle, hesitation in acceleration. happen in motion, stationary, and when vehicle was off. this vehicle is used mostly on the highway, in the mid-atlantic region.

Engine oil leaks and stores on the undercarriage, then leaks altogether and on floor- slip and falls in garage.

Engine rev up and down, then stalling and shuts off

Purchased 08-24-2019. not even 1200 miles in i have gas in my oil after checking oil on dipstick at home. probably 1/2 inch above the oil fill line. per dealer on 11/05 multipoint inspection there is gasoline in the oil per the dealer's notation.

Gas gets in the oil, gas fumes go into the car itself and make us dizzy while driving (not safe). car sputters (not safe) and heater does not get warm enough to keep the windshield clear in cold weather reducing viability and creating a safety issue. it takes 15 minutes of driving for car to warm up, i don't know how to see out of the windshield for the first 15 minutes. i'm aware this is a known issue with my model, i would like honda to do a recall and really actually fix it. dealer says there is no fix at this time. the service campaign isn't working. i'm reading that the 2019 were supposedly fixed with the same service campaign and it's not working.

On 10/16/2019, dealer replaced all of the fuel injectors, because they failed honda's tests. picked up the vehicle on the evening of 10/16/2019 and drove it home. started driving it to work on 10/17/2019 and while accelerating on the interestate, the engine started misfiring (violent thuds) and the check engine light started flashing repeatedly. i lost power and was able to make it to the side of the road. as soon as the vehicle was stopped, i placed the vehicle in park and then the check engine light no longer blinked or illuminated. had the vehicle towed to the honda dealership. vehicle did not misfire prior to the repairs made by honda. attached is the fuel injector repairs invoice. i also had all required maintenance as indicated in the honda service manual. vehicle has approximately 61000 miles.

When i go to honda dealership, they tell me i have no recalls on my car, although im reading everywhere else, and im getting notices in the mail on a few of them. i feel like im being lied to about my car and im afraid that my car is going to fall apart the longer i keep it. i would like to see if i can get someone to advocate for me on the issies that i am having with the honda dealership/corporation. i was on my way home from work three days ago, and i could not get my car to shift into reverse, i released the shift button and it popped out onto my floorboard. honda now says they will not cover the full cost of repair. my recall that i was supposed to have done about my motor leaking gas into the oil was never repaired and they are telling me that even though i got the notice in the mail, my vehicle shows does not need repaired. please help me. i have never felt so helpless and they tell me i was never sent a recall notice, when i have it in my hand.

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 honda cr-v. the contact stated that the rear hatch would not open and the engine was difficult to start. later, while driving approximately 70 mph, the forward collision avoidance system erroneously activated and caused the vehicle to abruptly stop. the vehicle was taken to flow honda of burlington (2920 s. church st, burlington, nc) where it was diagnosed that the battery was faulty and the automatic braking system required an update. the battery was replaced and the update was performed. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 60,135. the consumer stated the brake warning indicator occasionally illuminates.*js

I was driving my honda cr-v on a city street all off sudden the low tire pressure and brake system failure came on and the car just stalled and won't start. once i got off the car, the locked and i couldn't unlock the door anymore. i towed it home as the dealership was closed for the day. now the lights come on and the dash lights up and i can't turn it off.

Engine oil level on dipstick way above what it should be and there is a strong gasoline smell in the engine oil. the honda maintenance minder says 70% engine oil life is left. also the seat heaters don't seem to work. based on what i read online this seems to be somehow linked with the engine oil dilution issue

I have read that there are problems with honda's 1.5 liter turbo earthdreams engine related to gasoline in the engine oil. i check my engine oil dipstick today and discovered there is indeed gasoline in it (per smelling it). i have filed a case with honda, but since they don't have a fix for this yet, i am worried that having gas in the engine oil is going to cause severe damage to the engine. i have asked honda what they intend to do to remedy this problem, but have not received a response as of yet. i had an oil change approximately 2,000 miles ago. there is about 39,950 miles on the car. i have not yet noticed any major problems with the engine, but it does not seem to have the power it did when i first purchased it. thank you.

The oil level has consistently increased after every oil change, and has had the smell of gasoline, even within 1200 miles. i have brought this to the attention of honda on three separate occasions, but the dealership refuses to acknowledge the problem since i live in a warm climate area, and they insist, in the face of clear evidence, that only cold climates have the problem. 1,168 miles after an oil and filter change, i smelled gas from the dipstick, so i sent the oil in for analysis. the report came back with critical (>5%) dilution. this is a safety issue, as many people may not know that their engines may sieze, or just stop running, due to lack of lubrication.

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 honda cr-v. while the contact's friend was driving 75 mph, the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the contact's friend claimed that she smelled an odor coming from the vehicle. the vehicle was pulled over and turned off. when the contact's friend attempted to restart the vehicle, all the warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel and the vehicle would not restart. the vehicle was towed to port charlotte honda (1252 tamiami trail, port charlotte, fl 33953, 941-564-3343) where it was diagnosed that the engine failed. the dealer informed the contact that they repaired the motor and changed the battery; however, the failure recurred three days later. the contact took the vehicle back to the same dealer and was informed that the battery was never changed and that they would replace the battery to repair the defect. the manufacturer was notified regarding the failures and complaint number: 09758024 was filed. the failure mileage was 24,600.

Car has stalled when in motion. stalling happened once on highway, 2-3 other times on secondary roads. it feels like car "misses a beat" then strugles to reignite. engine did not stop completely. at times there has been a smell of gas in the car when in motion.

Warranty extension:2017-18 cr-v - gasoline seeping into engine oil. no problems have occurred yet, but a one year extension on a warranty is a totally insufficient remedy to the problem that can significantly reduce a vehicles life if the symptoms become evident after the short warranty extension period. a recall that requires a permanent fix to the problem is in order. see this link: https://www.motor1.com/news/268789/honda-cr-v-engine-troubles-report/

I purchased a 2017 honda brand new from my local dealer on 9/28/2017 i had the oil changed as required . a few months ago i had a oil change done at the dealer at the same visit they did a fuel injection software upgrade. since the upgrade my engine runs very rough when first started this never happened be fore the upgrade. the reason for the upgrade was that there was gas getting into the oil causing the oil level to rise which stated in the owners manual can cause engine damage. today i listened to my engine and the ticking noise is getting much loader than when i purchased the car .iam very concern that there is engine damage its seems that honda is in no hurry at all fixing the problem and when they do its going to be to late and the engine will be ruined

My 2017 honda crv-touring was just about 10k & recently, when turning on ac while running, engine is making very loud noise. it was not supposed to be built in this way for top of the line of crv model. since my car is under manufacturer warranty such that i want it to be checked to defect the issue.

1.5 l turbo, rising oil level - gasoline odor on dipstick.

Tl* the contact's friend owns a 2017 honda cr-v. the contact stated that fuel was leaking into the engine oil without warning. when the contact's friend checked the oil, the oil tank had overflowed and a fuel odor was detected on the oil dipstick. the contact's friend took the vehicle to don ayres honda (4740 lima rd, fort wayne, in 46808, 260-484-0551) and was informed that they could replace the oil. the manufacturer was notified and provided a case number. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 36,000.

Took crv into dealer due to engine oil smelling strong of gasoline. was told they looked over the car and could not determined why and that the odor was normal. was also told this is normal due to having a turbo engine yet told my vin # falls into the effected "oil over full' issue and i have an extra year of power terrain warranty. to my knowledge, oil level was only slightly elevated. nothing was done to remedy the issue, no service bulletin or oil change. crv only has 19500 miles. no check engine light or running issues. engine oil appears dirty yet onboard system states that oil life is at 50%.

2017 honda crv- ex / stalling on freeway vehicle identification number ' [xxx] on may 29, 2018, my car which has 16,0000 miles on it, started making a horrible engine noise, cylinders misfiring, loss of power and stalled while on the 405 freeway, i began to panic due to fact i was in the fast lane. i started to smell gas in the passenger compartment while cars are streaming to halt to avoid a multi car pileup. i didn't know whether to get out of the car or stay in, that's when i saw an 18 wheeler barreling towards me trying to stop. this truck came 2 feet from rear ending me. i was to shaken to speak for 5 minutes because my life flashes in front of me. this is a safety issue and honda should conduct an official recall. does someone have to die before a recall take place? honda's manager of recalls, brad ortloff, said oil in these engines could be diluted because of software settings or potential hardware failures. some vehicles could experience a loss of power, leading to cylinder misfires or engine noise. in addition to those symptoms, consumers have reported that their engines stalled or that the vehicles experienced a sudden loss of power, raising safety concerns. during the past 6 months i've been having the following problems with my vehicle ' oil dilution, rising oil levels, stalling and loss of power and stalling. i understand that honda motor company, ltd has recalled 350,000 honda crv's in china & canada because of the same problem. i would like honda to buy back my vehicle due to rising safety issues. given that the problem is well documented, honda has a responsibility to address these issues in an open and transparent manner. Tl* the contact owns a 2017 honda cr-v. while driving between 40-45 mph up a small hill, the vehicle lost power and failed to move. the contact also stated that the vehicle rode roughly and sounded as if it had a diesel engine. the contact drove the vehicle home. when the oil was checked with the dipstick, it was over the orange indicator line onto the metal and there was an odor of fuel. the contact called dch honda of temecula (located at 26755 ynez rd, temecula, ca 92591, (951) 268-9197) and was advised to have the vehicle towed to their facility. the dealer was unable to detect the presence of fuel in the oil. the contact stated that when she purchased the vehicle a few weeks ago, the dealer changed the oil. the contact stated that the vehicle had been at the dealer almost two weeks and was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified and stated that they would speak with the dealer. if the failure recurred, the contact was instructed to take the vehicle back to the dealer. the approximate failure mileage was 5,000.

Since purchasing the car two years ago, the oil level has increased and smells of gasoline, and the cabin has also on occasion smelled of gasoline. i complained to the dealership within the first week of owning the car, to no avail. i have complained each time i've brought it in for servicing, to no avail. i complained to the general manager of the dealership, who said he'd never heard of such a problem, when i had the car serviced on 5/14/19 (which included an oil change). a week later i checked the oil 'sure enough, the level has risen and it smells of gasoline. i have grave concerns: for my health and safety due to the oil dilution problem. i primarily drive short distances, which i understand increases the likelihood of oil dilution in the 1.5 turbo engine.

Gas getting into oil making oil level high and effecting lubrication

Fuel in oil causing high oil level and lowering the viscosity of the oil causing pre mature wear of engine components.

The oil in my engine is being diluted with gasoline. the dipstick never goes below full and the oil is thin and dirty. this is just 1 month after an oil change. occasionally the gas fumes enter the passenger compartment and make driving the car unpleasant. honda dealer says there is no problem. this is an ongoing problem. date below is the last time gas fumes were inside the passenger compartment.

My car was in motion i was making a right turn into the highway when my car just stopped. i turned it off, when i tried to turn it back on, it didn't. i started to smell something burning. so i just left it alone. only the lights on the dashboard and the radio turned on, i was able to control the windows. the warning lights that came up were the electronic power steering, charging system, and the check engine lights.

During oil changes, more oil was coming out than was being put in. oil clearly smells like fuel. when i brought this to honda's attention in early april, i was told to go to a certified honda dealership to get a diagnosis. during the diagnosis done on 4/17/2019, they performed an oil change at 80% oil life which indicated that oil levels were elevated by approximately 1/4th of a quart. i can only imagine how diluted the oil would be at 10 or 15% oil life. according to my case manager and as stated in this paperwork, this is "normal". paperwork provided below with personal information redacted.

Car stalled. and vents smell of gasoline, gear shift is loose. almost got in a car accident with my toddler and husband in car.

I went for an oil change and the place said that the oil smelled like fuel, was very thin. in consumer reports there was a blurb about the honda cr-vs with the 1.5 turbo engine experiencing the mixing of gas in the oil but mainly in the colder, northern states. so, when the oil change people said the oil smelled like gas, i then drove to a honda dealer and they checked it out, but said they didn't see gas in the oil, but i just had the oil changed so of course there wasn't signs of it. so, before my next oil change i will take it to honda so they can see it.

Oil dilution problem. gas getting into oil. honda "fix" did not work; same issue 300 miles after fix applied. engine idling rough (especially during first start after sitting overnight), oil level rising in car, when you check the oil it smells like gas, fuel smell in cabin periodically, engine hesitating/stalling while trying to accelerate. have visited dealership twice within 30 days for this problem with no resolution.

I believe my vehicle is part of the honda 1.5l oil-fuel problem first noticed back in late 2017. i did not think much about it until i talked with two other co-workers who also have 2017 honda cr-vs. first, my engine performance slowly drops after each oil change, then picks back up again once i have gotten an oil change. second, this was my first winter with my cr-v and i noticed that it has a very hard time accelerating during the winter months even after letting the engine warm up for several minutes. lastly, the instrument panel says that my oil level is at a certain %, for instance it says that i am at 20% right now, however, when i check the dipstick, i see oil well above the "full" line. i would like to know what i can do to remedy this problem. i live in the state of virginia, and noticed that there is no fix for vehicles in my state.

The level of the fluid on the oil dipstick will increase after an oil change. and upon removing it smells of gasoline. 2000 miles after an oil change the level on the dipstick will read 1/2' higher than normal. which tells me gas is somehow entering the crankcase and diluting the oil.

It is the end of march 2019. the oil level in the 1.5t engine keeps going up. the dip stick has strong gasoline odor. service bulletin 18-147 has been applied to the to the car in early january of 2019 and is not helping with the oil dilution. why is service bulletin 18-147 not considered a recall since it is mandatory for those who received the notice? why is the nhtsa not investigating a vehicle that has 500-1000% more posted complaints than the average vehicle of the same class?

Engine died on the highway after car went in for oil dilution recall and had the fix. this resulted in a crash.

2017 honda cr-v. consumer writes in regards to gas smell in oil. *ld the consumer requested the service bulletin 18-114 be performed on the vehicle at no charge. *js

Gas in oil after recall. had the recall that was supposed to fix the issue. a few weeks later and, now my oil is dark, overfilled and smells like gasoline. check engine light is on and my car started leaking oil after the recall. less than 15k miles

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 honda cr-v. while the contact's husband was traveling 35 mph, the check engine, brake, oil, and hill acceleration warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that cylinder number three misfired. the local dealer was not contacted. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: 09400744. the contact was referred to the local dealer. the contact stated that the failure was similar to a fault turbo charge article. the failure mileage was 48,640.

Engine was making a fluttery sound. noticed fuel in oil, found cams were binding and timing chain was stretched and loose. they replaced cylinder head and timing chain. learned online this is a known result of oil diluted by fuel, and there is a fix but only for cars registered in certain states, not my state. complained to american honda, case #09409822. was told oil dilution is normal, car should not be driven short distances - claimed this is in warranty documents - and they will do nothing, and also cannot provide me with anything in writing. no presale mention of "requirement" to not drive under several miles. with my 1/2-mile commute, would never have purchased this vehicle. based on this i am terrified that some time while driving in the future the timing chain will fail while i am driving, the engine will stop, and this could lead to serious injury or death -- either mine or yhat of strangers.

Yesterday i got in my car to head home from work. when i turned it on, i got a number of systems alerts, including the engine, brakes, power steering and others. i was able to get the car home, but when i was going to take it the dealership, the car sputtered and seems to be losing power as if it would stall. this is the third time that i have gotten system alerts and taken the car to be repaired. the first time, the oil was changed and a software update performed. the second time, a software update was performed. this time, i checked the oil and it was over full and smelled of gas. the car is now at the dealership for them to determine the issue. i live in texas. the first time this happened, was during the summer. the last two times have been in winter.

I recently bough a used 2017 honda cr-v. it had only 29,000 miles with a fresh oil change before purchase. i have put over 1,000 miles on it since purchase. i recently was informed of oil dilution problems with the 1.5l turbo and decided to confirm if my vehicle was affected. i checked the oil from the engine after letting it cool and my oil level was above the max level. also, there is a strong smell of gasoline coming from the oil. this deeply concerns me as the oil level shouldn't be above the max level and the increased wear that can occur from diluted oil. honda has yet to issue a recall or admit this is a widespread issue. i will be contacting honda in hopes of full resolution.

Oil dilution problem. checked oil level after sitting idle in garage for hours. oil level exceeds highest full level and dip stick has distinct smell of gasoline.
