My 1.5l turbo charged engine has a strong gasoline odor in the engine oil. so gasoline is mixing with my engine oil and may cause early engine failure or a safety issue. i noticed the gasoline smell when changing my engine oil and the car is parked.
Gas in oil
Have gas in my oil. dipstick shows over fill.
Gas smell on oil dip stick, oil level reading higher than orange markings, oil black and watery
Stalled momentarily at highway speeds. oil stick indicates 25 % excessive fluid.
I have noticed a gasoline smell in the passenger compartment of my 2017 honda cr-v ex from time to time, so i did some online research and found that the problem is widespread. it seems similar vehicles suffer from the same problem where gas is leaking into the oil. i checked my oil level, and sure enough the level is very high and the oil smells like gas.
I have only about 9700 miles on my crv but gasoline or some form of contamination appears to be finding their way into the oil resulting in excessive oil. the oil dipstick reads beyond the upper fill level mark. this appears to be a widespread problem without a solution - possibly leading to abrupt failure on the road.
On thursday, october 4, 2018 after getting off a freeway and slowing down, i pressed the accelerator to increase the speed, but it did not pick up; i tried many times but my car barely moved (like 10 or 15miles). i panicked but i just tried to park my car in the parking of a nearest grocery store. i could barely move the car and parked the car there. i immediately called aaa. a guy from aaa checked my car and turned on the engine; we smelled very strong gasoline-like exhaust. he suggested my car should be taken for inspection. my car was towed to a honda dealer by aaa. on 10/5, the result was "oil was over-filled 3-4 qrts over. drained all the oil and refilled to spec." (after 4,500 milage, my car's oil change had been done by another honda dealer one month before.) as my car was fine, i was told to pick it up. but i found a consumer report article about 2017 cr-v's rising oil level (gasoline-mixed oil), stalling, loss of power, gas smell, etc. the service and sales persons i asked about this issue said that they had never heard about the issue. on 10/6, the qc manager called me, telling me that i should check my car's oil level every 500 miles without explaining much. he is aware of the issue, but he did not know it until the previous day, he said. he did not know about a fix. i am now scared of driving this car and cannot trust this honda dealer any more. while i am writing this report, my car problem has not been resolved yet; i have not even picked up my car yet from the dealer. as of now (10/7), this honda dealer has not responded positively to my car problem. i just wanted to make this report today to warn the owners of 2017 cr-vs about a possible danger.
I have observed high oil levels and raw fuel odors on the dip stck, along with raw fuel odors in the cabin. i know honda is aware of the issue but has offered no guidance. tell they have a fix in place, honda should be giving free oil changes to prevent engine damage and premature wear and tear.
Oil dilution. strong gas smell in the cabin and coming from the exhaust system in cold morning start. oil level is higher and above the max line on the dip stick.
Gasoline mixing into engine oil - 1.5 liter engine. first noticed at 3000 miles, now again at 7700 miles.
We are experiencing the same fuel dilution in the engine oil that many other owners with 2017-18 cr-vs with the 1.5t engine are experiencing. we live in va. i feel as though i don't need to go into details as this issue is so well known, prompted a ban on sales of the vehicle in china, etc. they keep pushing back the recall and now announced for the first two months, it will only be available in select northern states. a simple search through complaints shows that this problem is not isolated to the northern states, it may be exacerbated by significantly cold weather, but the way they are rolling out a recall is not acceptable. it's unsafe (causes stalling vehicles on the highway and in traffic, which is most definitely a safety concern) and causes premature wear on the engine (a consumer protection issue). nhtsa needs to step up and accelerate enforcement action, e.g. make them accelerate the recall to all of their customers, not just just arbitrary classification and order based on whether or not you live on one side of a state line or the other. it gets cold in va too. the honda dealer basically told us we're out of luck until the recall, and to keep changing the oil.
I have a strong smell of gas coming from the engine. it has happened several times but 2 times in the last week. it seems to happen when it is early after i start the car and within the first 2 or 3 miles of driving. it is concerning because the smell of gas is overwhelming.
Engine oil bay smells like gasoline because of the gas mixing with the oil. my day is filled with short drives so the gasoline will not evaporate.
Overfilled oil levels and a gas smell
There is concern that the engine will seize while driving. when the vehicle is parked while checking the oil level, there is a strong gasoline odor from the engine oil level dip stick and the oil filler cap. also the oil level seems to increase between oil changes. a sample of the oil was sent to oil analyzers inc at the last oil change by the owner. the report is attached. note that the report indicates fuel dilution greater that 5% but in the comment section the is no noted engine wear metals found that is above normal. honda north america was notified and case #09009335 was generated. the local honda dealership was notified by u.s. postal service certified mail. this letter is attached.
Vehicle has gasoline that gets into the oil, raising the level when the oil is checked. there is a very strong odor of gas when you check the oil. the car will be running at highway speed and all the dash lights flash and engine loses power and you have to cruise to the side of the highway. lights then go off and engine runs fine, but there is still a strong odor of gasoline under the hood and especially in the oil. we are afraid of a possible fire, engine damage, or losing power and control (power steering, power brakes, etc.), possible causing an accident.
*fuel economy is down *excessive oil level *smell of fuel inside the car *strong smell of fuel in the engine oil
Oil-dilution problem ,oil level on dip stick is way above high mark on dip stick and smell fuel on dip stick

Fuel smell, oil dilution, potential unexpected engine failure
Car has been in motion and stationary when all dash lights come on, no systems work according to the dashboard. when dash lights with every single warning light comes on while driving, all power and acceleration is lost. this happened to me in an intersection the other day and luckily the crv was able to coast to the side of the road where the crv was unable to accelerate again until i turned the car off and back on. i have read numerous blogs with others having this issue. vtm-4 pops up on the radio screen as a problem. honda claims to have fixed this issue on the 2019 models yet no recall on 2017 and 2018 models? this loss of power and control of the vehicle is especially scary since i have 2 young kids that right with me daily. cruise control won't work, remote start hasn't worked since this issue started around 60-70k miles. honda needs to fix this major problem!
Engine oil level high
Once while moving the car to wash it, started it dis-engaged the electronic parking brake, shifted into reverse and the car shut off. the engine was cold. the second time started the car and took a twenty minute,10 mile trip to costco. 30 minutes later started the cr-v, again dis-engaged the electronic parking brake, shifted into reverse and the vehicle shut off, the car was warm. took the car to honda and they found nothing wrong, but changed the engine oil with only 2381 miles on the odometer.
Oil is getting diluted with gas and you can smell gas fumes in the cabin making the cr-v unsafe.
Fuel is mixing with the motor oil and diluting it. oil level rises above the full mark on the oil dipstick and has an odor of fuel. i had a professional oil analysis performed that confirmed that the oil is being diluted and viscosity lost. a copy is attached. the flash point also is reduced. this problem could affect engine performance and become a safety issue. the problem is ongoing. the date given is the date of the attached report.
Tl* the contact owns a 2017 honda cr-v. the contact stated that after the vehicle underwent an oil change, it hesitated to accelerate. the vehicle was taken to classic honda of midland (3705 w wall st, midland, tx 79703, (432) 681-1400) where it was diagnosed that the entire turbo system was blown. the dealer received authorization from the manufacturer to perform tests to see who was liable for the damage. the independent mechanic who performed the oil change stated that the engine malfunctioned. the independent mechanic ran tests on the oil filter and concluded that the manufacturer was at fault for the turbo system failure. the manufacturer was currently contesting the claim. the failure mileage was 27,800. *tt 'parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).' updated 12/07/18*jb
There is gas in my oil. i have not had any issues yet, but i fear for my safety and know that this is damaging my vehicle.
I own a honda cr-v /ex 1.5 liter turbo engine. aug 14 2018 noticed oil level on dip stick was above highest level indicator and oil smelled of gas. called independence honda in bloomsburg pa and brought vehicle on aug 21,1018 for appointment to check this condition. they changed oil and told me that honda knows about this issue and is working on a fix. they told me to bring it back in 3000 miles for another oil change. the same condition was found on oct 22, 2018 when i brought it back after 3000 miles. i was told honda would have a fix soon. december i received a letter from honda with product update 2017-2018 cr-v . i called independence honda to schedule the update on dec. 26, 2018 , which was performed. i was told that this was the fix for this gas in oil problem. on jan, 23, 2019 i checked the oil and the oil level was 3/8" higher than the highest level indicator on the dip stick and the oil smelled of gas. i took the vehicle to independence that day for their inspection of the problem. after their inspection they told me that this is a normal condition for this engine. this was the same problem they have been telling me for the last 6 months that honda knows the problem and they will have a fix for it. the fix has not worked on my vehicle. honda needs to recall these vehicles and install new components to prevent this condition and also extend engine warranties. i consider gas in the oil a safety issue. if vehicle stalls or has exceleration issues in traffic it could cause an accident and injury.
My car when 1st time start engine in am ,the whole car shacking abnormal and the gasoline smell some time but i don't know what wrong
A few weeks ago, my wife and i were driving on the interstate and noticed a gasoline smell in the passenger compartment, which lasted a short period of time and went away. on another occasion we noticed the smell again. i checked the fuel fill tube but found no problem there. i also checked under the hood and detected a fuel smell but saw no evidence of a leak. while under the hood i checked the oil and smelled a strong fuel smell in the oil. the fluid level on the dipstick was 7/8' above full level. i checked and double checked the levels and smell and there was definitely gasoline in the oil. i contacted the dealership (johnson city honda in johnson city, tn) and was told that this was a characteristic of the 1.5l engine when it was driven at low speeds and should be 'driven at higher speeds on the freeway to 'burn off' the fuel in the oil'! (we had just returned from a 750 mile interstate trip).they did change the oil but there was no resolution to the problem. since then the oil level has increased to ' above full level and the fuel smell is present. in my opinion, gasoline in the oil presents a safety hazard in that it can ignite under extreme heat conditions and can cause respiratory issues with passengers when the smell migrates to the passenger compartment. i have received information that honda has recalled approximately 350,000 of these vehicles in the asian market, but they have not made any attempt to correct the problem in the u.s.
Engine oil overfill condition exists as early as 700 miles after oil change at the dealership. engine oil is above the 'full' mark on the dipstick and the engine oil has the distinct smell of gasoline present. this problem is reported on numerous honda cr-v owners forums and is associated with the 1.5 turbo engine. it is our fear that if this overfill condition is due to the presence of gasoline mixing with the crankcase engine oil that the results could be catastrophic engine failure, explosion, sudden loss of engine power, sudden loss of vehicle control, etc.
Fuel is making it's way into the oil system. everytime i check the oil i can clearly smell gasoline on the dipstick. i know that honda has recalled 350,000 crvs in china for the same issue with the same 1.5 turbo engines however, when i tell the dealership or honda representatives about it they act as if it is an isolated incident. this will eventually cause premature wear on the engine and potentially become a safety concern if the engine were to stall at high speeds.
-i noticed oil/gas leak on the engine that slowly drips under. the engine oil smells gas, oil level goes up. - lane departare goes off when car is idle for more than 15mins (randomly) - navigation/audio acts up -changes screen and nonstop beeping. you n
Driving on freeway. button to shift tranmission/gears disintegrated. knew immediately that i would not be able to shift car into park, etc. felt extremely dangerous since i was going 50+ mph when this happened. based on level of complaints - see link - believe this should be addressed by recall. also could easily cause a serious accident. https://www.crvownersclub.com/forums/137-2017-present-official-specs-features-etc-gen-5/168802-gear-shift-button.html

Honda's 1.5l turbo engine oil level increases in the engine oil over time as unburnt excess fuel collects on the engine cylinder walls. the engine oil level grows quicker depending on driving conditions - sometimes colder weather, sometimes freeway speeds, there seems to be many variables. to combat the issue i am forced to change the engine oil more often for fear of engine misfires, engine damage, and premature engine wear. when i change the oil, i fill the oil to the mid engine oil dipstick mark but within 1500 miles or so the oil is at max dipstick level again with strong fuel smells. to date honda usa has no plan for correction let alone even acknowledging the issue.
Driving highway 15 east toward las vegas, nv. light on instrument cluster "shutter grille problem - power reduced". very dangerous condition as the engine power was reduced to 50 mph on the highway, i was unable to pass an 18 wheeler truck due to reduced engine power. stopped at nearby honda dealer, service dept. was closed, new car manager said "i have no idea what this code means" after sitting for 15 minutes code reset itself only to come back on after another 10 minutes of driving. temperature was 103 degrees outside.went to honda dealership in las vegas to be told again "have never seen this code before". no resolution - very dangerous condtion to loose 50% of engine power on the freeway.
Honda cr-v 2017 bought december 23, 2017 from zimbrick auto madison, wisconsin july 15, 2018 the car was parked in our driveway and would not start. we have a towing company hauled in for repair. now, on occasion the car cabin smells gassy. the oil filler cap when removed also has a very strong gassy smell.
While driving my 2017 honda cr-v ex-l on highway (the trip was about 10 hours), about half way of my trip, i could not reach the speed to 55mph with speed limit of 70mph. my odometer was reading around 30000mi. about two months later (just two weeks ago) i took another 2 hour one way trip, similar thing happened to me again on my way back (i could only drive at about 60mph with speed limit of 70mph). i raised the issue with local honda dealer and they told me to schedule an appointment. i will see what they are going to tell me about the diagnostic checkup. in addition to above possible engine/power/fuel related issues, i had two incidents of dead battery without doing anything after stopping my car. one time (summer 2018) i drove to my son's private teacher's house and parked outside. after the lesson i couldn't start my car. it took 4 hours for honda roadside assistance to come and found out the battery was dead. after the gentleman jump started my car it was driving fine. in september 2018 i did my oil change, the dealer's exam showed battery life good. then just about 4 weeks ago in october 2018, my car parked in my garage and it couldn't start again. the roadside assistance found out the battery was dead and no battery life. honda dealer replaced the battery for me.
Auto showed too much oil on dipstick reading and oil had strong smell of gas. dealer only drained excess oil and said lights will come on if real issue. i suspected fuel in oil so had oil tested at next oil change. test showed oil in critical state with over 5% fuel in oil. dealer refuses to acknowledge issue. worries include engine fire, premature engine wear and damage. honda needs to admit problem and produce fix. oil analysis attached.
Gas smell in cabin chemical smell in cabin gas in oil concerned of engine break down
I parked my car and turned it off to go into a store. when i came out i found that my car had rolled backwards into another car. fortunately there was no damage to either car, as i assume it occurred at a very low speed. when i renetered the vehicle it was still in the drive gear, which was my error. however, i don't know how the car was able to be turned off completely and locked while not even in park or even neutral. moreover the car was in the drive gear, which i would presume would mean it would go forward, but it was still able to roll backwards. this is incredibly concerning. i called honda and was informed there are no recalls and the best they could do was to inform their engineering team for future models. i have had other cars and was not able to turn off the ignition unless the car was in park. honda should be forced to implement this as well as i cannot think of any reason to keep your car in drive while the engine is completely off.
I've got 21000 miles on this car which i bought brand new. it's been to the dealership at least four times for the following: all warning lights come on the first time it happened i couldn't release the electronic parking brake. i was told oil was mixing with gas and that honda has a fix 'coming soon' i'm afraid to drive this car. the car was stationary each time
Strong smell of gasoline in engine oil . oil level rises over full mark on oil dipstick sometimes strong smell of gas in and around car when parked .
Gasoline getting into the oil. dipstick read in between "the lines" on level ground. drove 1500 miles (approx.) during a vacation. checked oil at our destination, on level ground, and the oil level was 1/4" to 3/8" above the full line on the dipstick and smelled of gasoline. i called honda and received a case number 08740888. took car to dealer and was told honda is aware of the problem but doesn't know what to do about it. also there is a recall in china for this very problem. the dealer did change the oil.
After starting up the crv in the garage, i exited it and climbed a short ~100' ramp about the height of 1 story at 10 mph or less. during at least two times in the past 7 months, the engine sputtered while climbing this ramp and neared a stall point. this occurred while in montana. after applying pressure to accelerator, sputtering stopped. additionally, there have been numerous times at startup when the central display screen freezes, remains black, denying navigation assistance among other options. it appears the only way to correct this is to restart the vehicle.
I bought this honda crv 2017 awd on 04/01/2017 from honda folsom. on april 24,2018, it would not start. i called roadside assistance to jumpstart it and brought this to the dealer in folsom. they changed the battery on april 24, 2018. today, may 30, 2018, it did not start again so it was jumpstarted again and brought this to honda roseville. they changed again the battery. they said all the electrical are good and no explanation given why the battery don't last. these 2 situations, luckily, happened in my garage. we did not have any situation that could discharge the battery.
