Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 1999 Honda Accord

At around 185000 miles now, this car which we bought a few years ago with maybe 50,000 to 60,000 less miles started shifting really hard between 1st gear and 2nd gear. now it slams in gear. from all we've read it is a design flaw regarding the filter which collects tiny metal particulates preventing enough pressure for the transmission to properly and smoothly shift. honda is well aware of this situation and will not offer to replace these transmissions. there are literally thousands of complaints i find when reading about this complaint online and everyone says the same thing. and there are so few left of these years that honda ought to have no problem replacing or repairing these transmissions for those of us who are still driving these cars. i want them to repair or replace our transmission because of their design flaw, not our misuse. please see this gets reviewed by a decision make, thank you so much.

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. the contact stated that there was a random failure with the park interlock function and the vehicle stalled several times without warning. in addition, the vehicle failed to restart and shifted in and out of park several times. the vehicle was to be inspected and diagnosed by a dealer and independent mechanic. the manufacturer indicated that there was no recall to address the issue. the vin and failure mileage were not available.

Travelling on interstate when when front-end of vehicle began to vibrate. moments after the vibration, the car veered hard right on its own. unable to regain control of vehicle, as steering wheel seemed as it was "locked" in a hard-right enabling position. this malfunction caused the driver to hit a retaining wall at approx 55mph, causing bodily injury. inspection revealed a faulty/failed steering knuckle, which had completely failed/snapped. car considered a total, after incident.

My three small children and myself were traveling on the interstate in our home town right at city speed limit of 75mph when out of nowhere from the middle lane attempted to get in the right lane to to get off on my exit 4 miles ahead i slowly hit my brakes then the gas and my car would not move i was almost plowed into numerous times and almost caused a few collisions myself since i was not able to move at all l was so scared i was about to die with my kids i was frozen

On 03/19/20016 i was on my way to work and out of now where i stop at a red light and i tried to take off i had to hit the gas peddle before the car would move. i made it to work and i took into a mechanic that same night and he informed me that i may need a new transmission.

The automatic transmission is slipping a problem with honda, and the car was getting a state inspection and found out the sub frame was rusted on the passenger side . will not pass a pennsylvania state inspection this is a problem with 1999 to 2002 accords call honda they will not help ( 168000 miles on car ).

Noise in the right axle in the transmission

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 70 mph, the rpms increased to 5,000 as the vehicle made a jerking motion and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was restarted and the rpms returned to normal, however, the failure recurred. the failure recurred on several occasions. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 185,000. the vin was not available.

The transmission seems to be slipping while i am driving the car. basically, at certain points (i think these are at gear shifts) the engine revs up and i get a big jerk in the car. this is very perceptible at the gear shift near a speed of 40-45 mph. *tr

My transmission failed because i was told the torque converter should have been replaced by the manufacturer honda immediately after honda realized the 199 honda accord torque converters were faulty. i purchased my car new and was not told about the situation until the transmission failed due to the faulty torque converter. honda did not set up a recall or notify 199 honda accord owners. they paid for the repairs when the transmissions failed for a few years. i have only 62,45a miles on my car and now have a $3007.00 bill to replace my transmission. this would not have occurred if i was told to replace the torque converter by honda as soon as they were aware of the problem. i should be reimbursed by honda. they refuse to do so. *tr

Drove car 70mph. the gear down shifted to 55. can't get past 55. *tr

Driving at 65 mph, sudden downshift, causing speed to go from 65 to much much less. *tr

Leaking transmission fluid, transmission slips and won't really engage at times. when i stop my car my it starts stutters and then it jerks while accelerating. my transmission pops in and out of gear. check engine light is on. when i turn the corner my car basically stops. i have 2 codes on my vehicle p0740 the torque converter clutch solenoid valve is activated, with the gear in d4, by the transmission control module (tcm) in response to signals sent from the vehicle speed and the engine control module (ecm). lock-up piston operation will then be controlled. when the torque converter clutch solenoid valve is activated, the torque converter lockup clutch will engage creating a 1 to 1 rpm ratio between the transmission input shaft and the rotational speed of the torque converter. lock-up operation, however, is prohibited when a/t fluid temperature is too low. when the accelerator pedal is depressed (less than 2/8) in lock-up condition, the engine speed should not change abruptly. if there is a big jump in engine speed, there is no lock-up. then the other is p0700 the transmission control module (tcm) monitors the malfunction of sensors and actuators relating to transmission control. when the tcm detects a malfunction with the control, a signal is send to the engine control module (ecm) to trigger the engine light or service engine soon light. the ecm stores the p0700 code and it means the tcm detected a malfunction with the transmission controls. *tr

The vehicle is unsafe to drive as the sub frame is rusted due to the air conditioner drain. engine runs great but the design is flawed. *tr

Upon inspection, the right rear portion of the front sub frame is rusted and disintegrated to a point where the car is not considered safe to operate. the frame section has lost so much material that it flexes when downward pressure is applied to the hub assembly. the left side of the front frame is intact and fully functional showing no similar signs of rust. *tr

I have serious issues with my honda accord. first, the transmission has failed. it began with it slipping in higher gears when hot and finally failed when it wouldn't shift out of low gear. this transmission is the same transmission that is in the 00-04 honda accords that were recalled. honda refused to offer any type of owner assistance. my expense to repair: $1516.30 second issue: in 2002 the ignition switch was recalled. the car died on the freeway and had to be towed two days after i received the recall notice. honda repaired the vehicle no charge for parts and labor but refused to pay for the towing expense. my cost: $75. now the ignition switch has failed again and honda has refused to replace it at no charge or with any type of owner assistance even though this same part was replaced as part of a recall. i have been given an "estimate" of $275 to repair. freeman honda of dallas replaced the switch under the recall. i've contacted john eagle honda of dallas, on lemmon ave, and left messages for[xxx] the service manager but have not received a return phone call. i spoke with a service consultant who point blank told me my car is out of warranty and they will do nothing to help me. i called honda customer assistance and was told they would not participate in any type of owner goodwill or assistance with either repair. i understand parts fail but these two repairs are known product issues for honda! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

I am the original owner of the vehicle and have followed all the recommended maintenance milestones at the same dealership since i purchased the vehicle. i was driving on highway and the transmission went out. this caused the vehicle to lose speed and i was almost rear ended by another vehicle. i called honda and they said that even with regular maintenance they will not stand behind the transmission after three years. i believe they should at least help in the cost of the repairs which are around $3,600.00 to rebuild the transmission. *tr

Transmission fail squills whines loud in reverse won't go in reverse sometime squills whines in park when started only way to hush it is to throw in drive then into neutral and pull the park brake. in drive it shifts hard going up in gears then when slowing down it down shifts hard like a manual transmission sometime hard enough to squill the tires . this is a big problem with 98-02 honda accord automatic transmissions and this needs to be fixed its going to get someone killed . honda needs to be forced to recall these car/ cars and fix the problem. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. the contact stated that the vehicle would not engage in any gear. in addition, the front end of the vehicle would shake when the vehicle was started, but the vehicle could not be driven. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was told that the transmission needed to be replaced. the failure and the current mileages were 89,000. updated 11/27/12 *cn

Transmission failure. *tr

Over the last week i have been experiencing the car suddenly turning off....no rpm's, no speed...while i am still in drive (automatic transmission). in viewing various websites, this is now becoming a common occurrence...and it extremely dangerous. although headlights still work, power steering is no longer available...so i must hurriedly shift into n to glide to the side of the road. the car does not restart right away. this has occurred at intersections, on the highway (at 70 mph) and while going 20 mph. there was a recall issued on the ignition for this type of problem in/around 2002-2003. i received this late...but did go to the dealer and have it replaced in 2009 (honda recall #02v120000). after experiencing this problem recently, i have gone online to see countless numbers of other honda accord owners who have been experiencing exactly the same problems....even after having the recall filled. evidently, the replacement part has been failing...or it was not the fix to begin with. this has was a very popular model..and there are sure to be hundreds of thousands of these on the road...about to run into something when the power fails. i am going to the dealership to get this resolved...but it is incumbent upon your organization to have this issue reviewed..and a solution available...asap. please look into this....i have never experienced such a frightening problem while driving. thank you. *js

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. the contact was driving approximately 80 mph when his knee haphazardly struck the gear selector, causing the gear to shift from drive into neutral. the gear shifter lever control was not engaged during the time of the unintended failure. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the contact planned to notify the manufacturer of the malfunction. the approximate failure mileage was 132,000.

My 17 year old daughter just bought a 1999 honda accord. after less than 24 hours she noticed the transmission slipping when going into 2nd gear. if you attempt to accelerate, the transmission causes the entire car to shake violently while not accelerating. this problem is known to honda for many years. there are thousands of instances of this same problem and literally hundreds documented online. how many people will have to be injured or even die when the car fails to respond to a driver entering traffic before honda will admit they knew the transmissions they were installing were defective and provide a fix? *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. while stopped and attempting to accelerate , the vehicle became hesitant and there was a delay in acceleration. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostics. the technicians stated there was a transmission failure and the transmission would need to be rebuilt. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 154,000.

Purchased 99 honda accord v6 in 2007. one owner car. im second owner. all maintenance done on schedule. on 5/29/11 transmission failed. i called honda they said "we know about the situation and we're investigating the issue. we're not going to do anything about your transmission. i have taken good care of my accord v6. the transmission should not have failed. i was stranded on the interstate with my four small children. then had to pay $350 for the tow home. i am a loyal honda owner. this is my fourth honda. i have never had major mechanical issues with any of my hondas. honda admitted there is a known problem. *tr

Dear sir / madam - honda in usa has intentionally dropped a large number of vehicles from its list of recalls/ fix needed to save the costs and maximize their profits. this case is one of them. my honda - [xxx] is facing all issues similar to ones recalled from 1999-02 models. first the ignition switch issues last year and now the transmission issues. i called honda and they said its not part of re-call while everyone knows these were part of re-calls so why was this vehicle dropped from the recall database ? how many more vehicles were dropped from the list and why ? i think the issue is not related to age but something else and needs investigation. now it makes me wonder how many vehicles they include and what they drop from re-calls as cost saving measure ? The ignition key can be removed while the car is in drive. this has always been the case when the engine is turned off since i purchase the car 2 1/2 years ago. several times i or another family member have returned to the car to find it in drive, but on level ground, so it did not roll more than a few inches at most. however, the potential to roll further and cause a crash is definitely there if one fails to use the parking brake. honda (national level) claims this recalled issue was repaired 10 years ago and will not do a diagnostic without guarantee of payment by me. their defense is that it could be some other problem and they are no longer responsible for the safety issue once a repair has been made. i am alerting you to this potential "other problem" as a safety concern. either the parts used to replace the recalled parts are also defective and could potentially cause a crash, or a different problem is causing the same safety issue that has the potential of causing a crash. *tr

1999 honda accord ex. transmission. car jerks forward, losses power, accelerates. thousands of complaints on the internet, why no recall? there is a defect in the manufacturing yet nothing is done!! why can a car manufacturer get away with installing defect parts which are a safety hazard and the nhtsa does nothing about it!! *tr

I bought this car new in 1999 while working as a salesman for a honda dealership.its always been well maintained as it is the only transportation i have.i no longer work at the dealership but my little boy needs a way to get to various activities as well as school.we depend on this machine and hondas reputation to get things done.around 76000 miles the transmission started to shift hard and not want to go into gear. after checking around various shops and the internet i was surprised to find out that so many other owners of 1999-2002 accords had the same problems or worst.some with only 50000 miles had to be replaced.i'm pretty sure this is an american honda deal as the japanese people would back up their products.once again we get screwed by our fellow greedy americans.i will not be buying another honda product be it a lawnmower, car, motorcycle, generator or paper bag for that matter.i will also warn everyone i know by internet and carrier pidgeon about american honda and their lack of ethics.what goes around comes around! *tt

I have 91,000 miles on my honda accord lx 99 year model. i have maintained it very well with regular check ups and services. transmission on my car behaves so erratic and its beyond my control. it suddenly stops in middle of drive and i am afraid of someone hitting me from behind because of this nature of my car. *tr

My car's transmission shifts badly. when shifting between 1st and second gear it jumps badly and sometimes wont shift at all. and even from second to third it does it too. after i'm in the higher gears it shifts better. but in those early gears my car is dangerous. i'm afraid it might completely stop working one day. i've read online all the complaints people have about my same year of accord and the years surrounding it: almost all of them have a faulty transmission. i think that honda needs to fess up about their faulty trasmission and do a real recall. i'm one of many concerned honda owners and wish that they would own up to the problem. many people wont be going back to honda brand cars because of this problem, including me. *tr

Failed transmission. *tr

Yellow check engine light is on. transmission torque converter clutch is causing severe chattering and/or lurching when starting up or at low speed. car is near stall and is vulnerable to an accident especially at intersections after a stop. car has only 83,000 miles. *tr

I got a 1999 honda accord lx and while i was driving my car just loss power and i was scared i was on the florida turnpike going 70 ml. with on going traffic and i did not know what to do the car was just slowing downed please help and do something to stop this thank you. *tr

I have repaired my transmission twice now and its in my garage now it needs a transmission again i have changed all sensors egr o2 sensor this last time was different i was driving at a normal speed then suddenly i got a hard jerk and i knew my transmission was going bad again in 2005 when my transmission went i called honda to see if my 99 accord v6 coupe was one that was on the recall after taking my vin number they said it wasn't but if im having the same problem like everyone is why im not getting the replacement. *tr

The "check engine warning light came on" and the trouble code is p0740, transmission torque converter circuit malfunction. the car surges forward from a stopped position even at the slightest depression of the gas pedal which makes it prone to an accident by hitting the vehicle in front. i brought it to the dealer and they reset the warning light, test drove it and told me that they can't find anything wrong but told me that the transmission may be getting bad. on the way home, the warning light came on again. i brought it to a trans repair shop and they checked the trouble code to be the same p0740 code. they checked the resistance of all the solenoids and replaced the linear solenoid which was out of spec. the warning light came on again on the drive home. i had it scanned again and the code was p0740 again. the trans shop said that they may eventually need to completely rebuild the transmission and may cost around $3500-4000. i have already spent $400 so far. i now drive the car sparingly until i can have the funds to get a rebuilt trans. i wish the nhtsa would require honda to recall this model year like they did for the 2000 model since there seemed to be an unusually alarming high rate of complaints on 1999 accord transmissions. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda accord lx. in november of 2008, the transmission was replaced at 14,000 miles. recently, the contact noticed that the transmission was not shifting correctly while driving 30 mph. the dealer stated that the transmission needed to be replaced again. the manufacturer stated that the mileage exceeded the warranty and they will not assist. the cost for a new transmission would be $2,630. the failure and current mileages were 141,000.

Transmission slips when shifting between 1-2 and 2-3 gears check engine light came on reporting "po740 - torque converter clutch circuit error". *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. the contact stated that the driver seat in his vehicle became separated from the frame. the failure occurred while the contact was driving approximately 20 mph. he took the vehicle to the dealer and they stated that the seat detached from the bracket. he was informed that his vin was not included in a similar product update. the current and failure mileages were 112,472. updated 10/07/08. *lj the transmission wasn't shifting properly. updated 10/08/08. *jb

99 honda accord transmission failed. no warning from dash board. can't speed up on the road. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. while driving less than 70 mph, the vehicle would lose power. all of the instrument panel lights flashed on and off and the vehicle shut off completely. the vehicle then restarted by itself. the failure occurred twice a week and has not been remedied. the failure and current mileages were 149,000.

The transmission of my 99 honda accord ex v6 is behaving erratically and is creating a hazardous situation on the roads as the car suddenly jerks and speeds up or slows down as the transmission shifts erratically without any control. at times the car just locks up into 2nd or 3rd gear on the freeway. i believe this is a serious safety issue for others and for my family. after doing some research, i notice that a lot of other car owners have had or having similar experiences with this model and make of car. honda has issued a recall on the transmissions of other accords for model year 2000 - 2003, however i understand that even for the 1999 year accord, it has the same transmission problems as have come up on the 2000-2003 model years because it is the same transmission make. *tr

Got a car tune-up done by a honda dealership. the gears shifted a lttle different but i attributed it to the tune-up. it progressively got worst so i took it back to the dealer to have it checked. after their analysis, they diagnosed it as a "bad differential" and it needed a new transmission. the car only had 78,000 when it was at the dealer for the tune-up the end of may. do i have any recourse through the manufacturer???

The transmission was slipping from 1st to 2nf gear, it was mildly noticeable. i had it checked out by transmission auto shops and they said i would be fine and there was not any indication of problems from the diagnostic tests. i continued to drive it for a year. then one day it shifted so hard i barely made it out of the middle of the city going through multiple intersections to find a place to park it. the transmission will need to be replaced. had the transmission dropped in the middle of the busy city, i know it could have caused an accident. *tr

Check engine light came on. brought to the dealer and they said the code indicated a torque converter circuit malfunction. dealer supposedly checked and road tested and said they couldn't find anything wrong. they reset the warning light and said the transmission maybe going bad. i was charged their typical outrageous labor cost. i should have brought it to an auto parts store who could have told me the same thing for free. but i thought they would know more about what is wrong with their cars than an auto parts code reader, i was totally wrong. the warning light came back on during my drive back home from the dealer. all the required maintenance has been performed by the dealer since the time i bought it new. the car had around 98,000 miles when the warning light first appeared. i brought it to a transmission repair shop next and they replaced the linear solenoid and checked the others which were all fine, but the warning light came back on. the trans. shop said this is a predominant problem with 99 and 2000 accords, but the mfr only recalled the 2000 models. i know this is true because i also own a 2000 accord which was recalled by the factory for transmission problems. the mechanic said that honda should have recalled this model year also since the 99 and 2000 models were essentially identical. now the only recourse is to overhaul or replace the transmission which will cost lots more money. the manufacturer should recall the 99 accords as well or at least shoulder half of all the expenses because of this defect. i have own several vehicles other than hondas and i have never encountered any transmission problem and all have gone over 150,000 miles. good bye honda! all my family and friends will surely know about this. *tr

I have a 1999 honda accord lx 4 door sedan with 71,000 miles on it. the check engine light came on, and the dealer says the p0740 code is torque converter clutch assembly failure is a $2900 replace the transmission job. a transmission shop told me the same thing. a transmission with 71,000 miles, even 7 years old, should not go out!!!! there was a honda transmission class action suit covering only 2000-2003 trannys, my model year is excluded but same problem exists !!!!! *tr

At 92 k miles, the alternator broke down and the transmission started slipping, the car jumps forward on the second shift. dealer advise to replace transmission. *tr

Hi, i own a 1999 4 door automatic honda accord ex-ul, but the transmission literally failed on this car and is due to the fact of a defective part, which i found from reading various article on the website. the honda is not accepting its problem. i have seen serial complaints out transmission failure on the website. honda have extended warranty by recall on 2000-2001 honda accord models, by they haven't done for 1999 models. my personal view is that they are avoid a huge recall by hiding the problem. i would request you to investigate the matter as it may cause lots of accidents due to transmission failure in the of the freeway. since honda is protecting himself, we would need you help to check on the reality of bad transmission put in 1999 hondas. *tr

I have a 1999 honda accord lx with a 4 cylinder vtec engine. 1-12-08 while driving at lower speeds--typically 30 to 45 mph the car will jerk and change gears when not needed. at highway speeds the car stalls and i have to shift to neutral to restart. update: may 2008 and i have no reverse gear at all. after reading all the complaints i would really like to know why honda has not put a recall on these 1998 and 1999 transmissions. why? does someone really have to die before they fix their own problem? i am calling honda in the morning and if i don't get satisfactory results i would like to start a negative campaign against honda. this is crazy and i want answers. *tr

Car won't start and maintenance light came on. tow it to a honda dealership found to the transmission's fault. honda won't cover it under their recalls for 2000 models, because it is a 1999 model. *tr
