Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 1999 Honda Accord

Since first purchased this 99 accord has been to the shop on 5 different occasions for hard shifting into 1st and 2nd. was told by honda mechanic that was how it was supposed to shift. still having troubles with slipping, and hard shifting and occasionally down shifting when going 70mph, car will whine loudly and you can feel the transmission down shift. was told i needed to replace transmission. *tr

Car is stalling and seems that transmission is slipping. in researching web, i have run across at least 20 drivers, with exact same make, model etc. although my car has 120k miles, some only had 60k when their transmission failed. every mechanic that i spoke with (including dealership) admits that the transmission in these models are known to fail. i can't believe that a dealer as reputable as honda has not been made to reengineer their transmissions. according to the complaints i have read, even the 2004 models have transmissions beginning to fail. it seems extremely unfair that the customers are the ones footing the bill. *tr

I can add another transmission failure from a honda accord 1999. this car has the same transmission as the recalled transmissions on honda accord from 2000 to 2002. my transmission seal leaked at 110,000 miles. i had the transmission rebuilt at 149,000 miles for $2100. of course, the reason i bought a honda was better engineering. i am beginning to think that i have a false perception of the honda quality. this was my first honda and i don't think at this time that my next car will be a honda automatically. i have gotten unsold on them. based on all of the other letters i saw on this same problem, and the fact these cars had lower mileage, i don't think i have a prayer on honda kicking in something for the repair. next time i buy a car i am starting with these letters on cars at this website first!!!! cars are quite expensive to have to settle for problems! *tr

The transmission in the honda accord vehicle years 1998-2003 are defective. the transmissions are failing at as early as 70,000 miles. my accords transmission recently failed at an estimated 80,000-85,000 miles. upon further investigation i discovered that honda did/or will replace the transmission in only the 2000 and up accords but will not acknowledge a problem in the 98 and 99 honda accord despite knowing that the same exact type of transmission was used in the 98 and 99 versions as well. there are numerous complaints concerning honda's refusal to take responsibility and replace the transmission in 98 and 99 as well. is their anything that we can do. i think it's unfair to spend over $2,600 to replace something that honda knows is defective. please let me know what actions i could take. thanks *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. when accelerating from a stop, the vehicle speeds forward. the dealer stated that the transmission is slipping and needs to be replaced. the manufacturer stated that they will replace the transmission free of charge, but the contact would be responsible for the labor. the engine size was unknown. the current mileage is 83,000 and failure mileage was 60,000.

[xxx] november 21, 2006 i was driving on a freeway, and i noticed smoke streaming from the top of the steering column. i took the exit off the freeway. the car was losing power, and jerked when i gave it gas. i pulled over and called the tow truck. the car was towed to marin honda, a nearest dealer. november 24, 2006 they tested and found the electrical portion of the ignition switch had failed. they replaced it but at the same time the (trans gear selection) light began to flash. the service advisor said that it's a completely different problem. marin honda charged us $205 for the replacement of ignition switch. november 24, 2006 ever since the ignition switch was replaced, the trans gear selection begins to flash when the engine is on. and it makes a clunk sound and the whole car shakes when the gear is shifted to reverse or drive. i called the marin honda service advisor and said the transmission problem must be related to the ignition switch replacement, but he was adamant that ignition switch has nothing to do with transmission. he said it is pure coincidence that both the ignition and transmission had problems at the same time. november 28,2006 december 1, 2006 the mechanic at petaluma honda said that the range sensor is malfunctioning and there are a few wires dangling which may be why the cruise control is not working. they recommended that we take the car back to marin honda. i drove the car to marin honda. december 2, 2006 eddie parnell, service manager at marin honda said that they've replaced the range sensor but still has the same problem. he thought it could be the transmission. he said that they continue checking. december 9, 2006 after eight days, jack, service advisor at marin honda, called and said that the transmission has to be replaced. he said that we will have to pay half of the cost. *nm updated 07/11/2012 *js information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

I was driving back from sf to our home in santa rosa, and i noticed smoke streaming from the top of the steering column. then the odometer dropped from 65 to 0, went back to 65, then fluctuated. as i took the exit off the freeway, the car was losing power, and jerked when i gave it gas. i pulled over and called the tow truck. the engine did not start when the tow truck driver tried it, although it cranked. the car was towed to marin honda. they tested and found the electrical portion of the ignition switch had failed. they replaced it but at the same time the d4(trans gear selection)light began to flash. the service advisor said that it's a completely different problem, and that we should take the car back to the mechanic who replaced the trans fluid 7 weeks ago.(my wife told the customer service advisor that we had the trans work done a couple of months ago when it fact it was just changing fluid as part of regular maintenance). marin honda charged us $205 for the replacement of ignition switch. the d4 starts flashing when the engine is started and shift to any one of gears. and it makes a big clunk and the whole car shakes when the gear is shifted to reverse or drive. i called marin honda cust advisor and told him it must be related to ignition switch replacement, but he's adamant that it has nothing to do with it. when we checked your website and looked under "recall" for 1999 accord, we found it had ignition sw recalls in three different years, 2002, 2003, and 2005. ignition switch(2002), cylinder wear, collar, plate latch(2003), interlock function(2005). could trans range sensor ckt malfunction be caused by heat from the ignition wiring burning out? *nm

Tl*- the contact stated that while driving the 1999 honda accord with 80000 failure mileage at 45 mph and coming to a red light the vehicle stopped, but in an attempt the drive the vehicle, it did not move, it jerked forward eventually. also, the vehicle had problems shifting into gears. the vehicle was taken to a shop and a new transmission was recommended. *ak

A few weeks ago i was driving and my transmission started to shift erratically through 1st,2nd,and 3rd without a change in speed. later that same day the transmission would not shift into the following gear resulting in the rpm's to increase follow by it jamming it into gear. the car must no be replaced with a used or new transmission and i was quoted $3000+ to get this done. after alot of reading around and investigating this problem i have learned that this is very common and the 00-01 accords have a recall for the exact same transmission. my car has 155k miles on it but i have all the service records and car has been very well maintained. i just think it is outrageous that there is no way for honda to split the cost at the least. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated while traveling 20 mph, the vehicle jerked when shifted into reverse or 1st gear. the transmission slipped between 3rd and 4th gears and transmission fluid was seen on the driveway. the vehicle was inspected by an independent service dealer, then by the service dealer, who determined the transmission needed replacement. the service dealer replaced the transmission and the manufacturer was notified.

1. transmission fluid started leaking on 99 accord ex with >92100 miles. eskridge honda tightened boxton bolt. leaking got worst. took car back 2 days later. eskridge stated a new transmission would be required because the inspection revealed that it was the same transmission problems experienced by other models -- 00-0 models where honda usa provided an extended warranty to replace those transmissions. 2. from my research, other consumers have been experiencing similar transmission problems on their 99 hondas, but there's been no recalls. 3. since i view it as a safety issue, i plan to pay if necessary to replace it, since i don't want my 16-yr son driving an unsafe vehicle. 4. is nhsta aware of this problem on the 99 hondas? if so, what's the status of your actions in getting honda usa to extend the warranty for 99 hondas. *nm

Transmission will not shift properly into gear, it was slow in shifting. when ever this happened engine would rev. *ak

The transmission slips, shudders, free spins, and shifts very erratic. it started suddenly just out of no where. this transmission isn't very good, and honda is denying any defects in it. its really messed up how honda is treating customers who have come to love honda cars. *nm

Started seeing transmission fluid on lt side under vehicle. had seal replaced by local trans ship. two weeks later fluid leaking again. researched and found recall on 2000 and up for bad bearing causing this exact problem and honda's extended warranty on those vehicles. took vehicle to rt.23 honda and they advised that even though this was the same problem the only item that the honda field service manager would only allow the part only. i would have to pay the $1000 labor. i requested the field manager's name but brad morder (service writer at rt.23 honda) refused to give it to me. i lodged a complaint with honda (case #12006-04-250-0809)that was handled by chris martinez of honda (x-118183) who stated that he did not want to discuss the particulars and that he had no authority to change the decision of the field manager. again, when i asked for the name of the field manager mr. martinez would not give it to me. when i asked him for his superior's name so that i could escalate this matter, he advised that his decision was final and there was no other recourse i could take. any help you could furnish would be appreciated. c. o. heine. *nm

1999 honda accord v-6, 90k miles. in july, 2005. i started noticing a whistling sound when the engine was on and the abs and other dash lights would come on and off sporadically. during normal maintenance, i inquired about the noise and dash light problem. nothing was found wrong. the dash lights have been coming on and off ever since. today when the car was cranked, it made a louder than normal whistling sound. after driving if for 1/2 a mile the noise stopped. the next time i drove the car, it stopped accelerating and acted as though it was going to cut off. i parked it and attempted to crank it again but the battery was dead. after recharging the battery, it still could not accelerate. i had it towed to the honda dealership. after inspection, i was told that the transmission would have to be replaced. after researching the internet, i realized that many others with 99 accords have experienced the same problems. considering this is the 3rd honda i have purchased (the transmission had to be replaced on my 93 honda also) it appears to be a problem that needs to be addressed. *nm

I have a 1999 honda accord ex v-6 that i have taken to the service dept for maintenance by the book. today i found out my transmission has failed and it will cost $4200 to repair. i have read the emails of hondas with the same problem. why is there no recall for the transmissions? i did everything according to honda and now my beloved vehicle has failed me. i have been a true honda person. this is my third honda. *nm

I am writing to express dissatisfaction with my 1999 honda accord ex v6,[xxx]. about a week ago my check engine light came on. i checked the code and it indicated torque converter clutch malfunction. the car was shifting and driving fine, so i brought it in to the honda dealer to get the transmission fluid changed. i cleared the error, but it came right back on. the car was shifting and driving fine. today on my way to work at 75 mph at highway speeds, it shifted in to second and stayed there. you can imagine what that did to rpms! now it won't go in to reverse or any other forward gear but second. i called my honda dealer and they said i'm looking at a transmission replacement. $2950 just for the parts (doesn't include labor). that comes with a 36,000 mile warranty that i will easily use up in one year due to my long commute. being that the car has 136,000 miles on it, i figured it was highly regrettable, but understandable. until i started looking online! i suggest you check out this thread! http://www.autofan.com/forum_thread.asp?message=3625 this appears to be very widespread. there are people on that post with 72,000 miles and three dealer replacements, some with six dealer replacements. my big worry now, after reading so many other experiences, is that i'll replace the transmission and be buying another $3000 transmission a year later. *nm updated 07/17/2012 *js information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

My 99' honda accord would slip gears and jerk a lot when i would put it in gear or stop at a stop light and then proceed to go again. after a day of driving i took my car to the dealership and the said my automatic transmission had gone out completely and that they see it happen to my make and year of car all of the time. i had to replace the transmission and take a hit of three thousand dollars to get my car functional again. it amazes me that there is still not a recall for this but almost everyone who owns these cars has to replace the transmission. *jb

One day while driving down a busy 3 lane highway my honda would not go forward any more. no matter how hard i pressed the gas it would no longer accelerate. i could put the car in neutral or reverse, but in drive i could not get it to go above 10 mph. i immediately recognized that it was the transmission and took it to a transmission place who told me honda has an extended warranty for 98-2000 accords under 100,000 miles, and they will replace your transmission. since my car only had 80,000 miles, i called the service station, made an appointment and told them that it was the transmission. they told me okay, but there would be a $95 fee if it wasn't the transmission. they called me later that day, and said my vin# didn't match the recall, so sorry. i called american honda, and they said i should not have been given that information, and there was nothing they could do. i stated so what you are telling me is that in 98,99 & 00, you put bad transmissions in your accords, i have a bad transmission in my accord, but i'm not covered??? to which they replied yes. *jb

I have a 1999 honda accord dx sedan. the clutch went out recently. according to honda, they have a service bulletin out for this problem. however, honda says this problem is due to faulty manufacturing from a vendor at original assembly. instead of repair or replace the part that is faulty the whole clutch assembly must be replaced due to new manufacturing and design specs. so instead of a cost of @ $150.00 it will cost me @ $500.00. plus there are no assemblies available - it's back ordered due to the demand of this assembly because of the failure of the original. as of this time - even though honda freely admits the to bad manufacturing -they are offering no reimbursement or offer no assistance for a rental car. i've been without a vehicle for 3 weeks with no repair date in sight. *nm

Honda accord 99 v6 transmission failed, speed 10 mph while it's 6000 rpm, almost caused an accident, very dangerous, it's 2nd transmission. the 1st transmission failed at about 70k miles, and the 2nd failed at 82k. *jb

I have a 99 honda accord ex v6 and found out recently that the transmission had to be replaced. it was having serious shifting problems and the check engine light came on. the hadn't even hit 90,000 miles yet. when i went in to honda to see what the light was on for it turns out it was a "torque converter clutch system failure" and the transmission would have to be replaced. honda told me it was no longer under warranty (3yr, 36k mi warranty) so they claim they couldn't replace it. it shouldn't matter if it isn't under warranty. no one purchases a car, new or used, to have to get a whole new transmission before the car even makes it to 100,000 miles. besides the major mechanical purchase, honda's faulty transmissions are a safety hazard. i can't recall how many times i've practically been ran off the road by tractor trailers because my car couldn't shift and accelerate fast enough to get onto the highway. honda should be ashamed of themselves. does it really take someone to die before they try to remedy the situation? *jb

I have had a transmission failure in my honda accord. when i took it to a mechanic in parkville, missouri, he checked the transmission fluid and found it black. he flushed the transmission, put new fluid in, and changed a filter behind the glove compartment. he told me that honda from 98 to 2002 had transmission problems. he told me to drive the car for a few days and see if that didn't fix it. i could tell as i drove home that it was not fixed. the mechanic said that a new transmission would cost 1,600 to 1,800 dollars. since i have had to get a new engine in my accord or my lemon, three new batteries, and now a new transmission and it is not already paid for because i leased it and am in the process of buying it, i need all the help i can get. *nm

Honda -accord -model 1999- v6 - have a transmission problem -while changing 30 to 40 miles -speed. honda dealer asking to repair the part for $ 4,450.00 the trasmiice to honda to repair or recall the transmission ( automatic ). *tr

I bought a honda accord from crown auto in oxnard california in april of 2005. four months later my transmission gave out and it was replaced in august of 2005 , now it is february and my transmission is giving out . *jb

At 99k miles the transmission started slipping. the car jumps forward on the second shift. dealer advises to replace transmission cost $3800. *jb

1999 honda accord failed transmission. no transportation for a month dealer estimate for repair $4000.00. i feel this is not fair honda recalled every year of this same model after my car. there need to be so just or a class action suit. *jb

Transmission slips and will not go into gear. only 55,000 miles on the vehicle and we strictly adhered to the maintenance schedules. based on research on the web, this is quite common but honda is not standing behind the transmission failures. honda recognized the issues with the 2000-2003 accord transmissions but failed to include the 1999's when their is obviously widespread problems with them.

I bought my 99 honda accord on june 28, 2003 for 16,000$ odometer readout 56,000 miles. i have since noticed noises and jerky like movements upon acceleration also when letting off the gas peddle when the car is trying to idol down. as if to be stuck or revving in the gear in which its leaving and ends with a jerk once it gets to the gear its changing to with a rev or jump especially if on a hill. now at just over 130,000 miles and in the year 2008 the problem is worse and worse. the problem has been temp. made better with flushing of the transmission fluid, and for whatever reason there is no changeable transmission fluid filter. i have been told by honda that i need a new transmission. what! 130,000 miles and it already needs replacing, this is suppose to be a honda,, honda once meant reliability, biggest mileage ect. i have not as of today which is july 15, 2008, replaced my transmission, and im hoping that with a little prayer god will have mercy on me and my dumb car, because i cant afford a new transmission, and yes i am willing to bet that they have this part in stock even!! hondas good to have those odd parts that break , lets you know that your not the only one with problems on those parts. they like to screw you once you drive up and tell you lots of things you do not need to do to your car just to take every dime you have to your name. i once saw a honda outside the showroom where i bought my car,, it was on showcase for its mileage of over 600,000 miles! im thinking they didn't have tranny problems before they reached 200,000 miles! *tr

The vehicle was parked in the driveway which is very steep. the consumers husband had come home and found the vehicle in the woods beside the driveway. the problem could not be duplicated. *ak the emergency brake was engaged and the vehicle appeared to be in park. the consumer requested reimbursement for the deductible and the rental car expense. also the key was able to be removed while the vehicle was in gear. recall campaign# 05v025000. *sc

Transmission failure - 1999 accord ex in mint condition, perfect maintenance records and the transmission begins to fail ,out of the blue, at 71,000 miles. the car shifts and lurches in 1st, 2nd and third gear. also, noticable loss of overall power or torque in the cars performance. this is my third accord and first automatic. honda will only pay for part of the repair. i hope by writing this i help others with the same problem. i am being forced to negotiate the repair cost with the local honda dealership. i am asking free parts, free labor and free rental car. they came back with a reduced cost of $1200 dollars and no mention of the rental car. i am really disappointed in honda, i am a loyal customer and promoter of the brand name. i expect restution if they finally recall this position. *ak

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. the contact stated that the transmission recurringly failed. initially, the torque converter solenoid circuit failed and the transmission was replaced. the contact was driving 30 mph when the vehicle lost acceleration power and the transmission failed again. the transmission was replaced a second time at 46,000 miles but the failure recurred. the vehicle was not repaired for the most recent failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 151,029.

Vehicle experienced a problem with the transmission. vehicle hesitiates when put into gear. owner contacted the manufacturer, but had not received any assistance. *ak

1999 honda accord transmission failure the transmission is hesitating at shift points and shifts harshly when finally shifts. i brought my car into my local dealer who determined the transmission is in need of replacement at a cost of $4280.00. i have since contacted honda's customer service. they have agreed to cover the cost of the transmission but expect me to cover the cost of labor, totaling $863.00. in my research i have found that honda motor corp.has extended the warranties on five models of vehicles built from 2000 thru 2002 but not 1999 year. *nm

Transmission fails to downshift properly. honda fails to acknowledge their mistake, and its unfortunate that consumers like myself should pay for their mistake. *nm

The transmission was slipping. the gears were defective and the fluid was discolored. *jb

1 auotmatic transmission shifting differently 2 transmission will not shift untill car is completely warmed up 3 no parts replaced yet. *ak

My 1999 accord has 70,000 orginal miles on it. then one day the gears stated slipping and within a week the check engine light came on. dealership recommends new transmission for $4000. but dosen't know why tranmission has failed. still working with dealership on repair.*ak

While driving the transmission would down shift on its on. the driver noticed that the vehicle would jerk then accelerated with a hesitation. the consumer was able to drive to the dealer for inspection. the mechanic informed the driver that the problem could not be duplicated. please fill in additional information. *jb

I was driving my mom's 1999 honda accord ex v6 home last night around 11:00 pm. as i was approaching the exit and proceeded to decelerate from 65mph, the car violently downshifted several times causing me to lose control of the car. a large tractor-trailer which was behind me was narrowly able to avoid rear-ending (or running me over!) by switching lanes. my life flashed before me as i thought this was the end of my life. fortunately, i survived, however, i have a nasty case of whiplash. after doing my research, i've found that the transmissions used in the 98-2002 accords v6 have a faulty carrier bearing which brakes and ruins the innerds of the whole transmission. after calling honda usa, i was told tough luck, and was sarcastically told that if i expected them to pay for replacement, i shouldn't hold my breath. regardless of the extrordinary inflated replacement cost of $4800.00, the nhtsa must open a defect investigation. although the 2001-2002's were "recalled," the 98-99's with the exact same transmissions have not. i fear for the lives of all those individuals with these cars - especially if they cannot afford the outrageous cost to replace honda's faulty transmissions. this is truly an injustice!*ak

While driving at 36 mph, the vehicle suddenly jerked forward, followed by a metal to metal noise. the driver coasted the vehicle to a stop, then had the vehicle towed to a dealership. the dealership flushed the transmission because the fluid was burnt, but the metal noise was still present. a diagnostic test was performed. the front pump was found to be the main cause of the failure. excessive metal was also found in transmission pan as well as fluid and the forward drum was damaged. a re manufactured transmission with a torque converter was installed. *jb no recall pertaining to this vehicle found. *tc

I noticed transmission leaking from my 1999 honda accord ex at about 78,000 miles. i also noticed that my transmission was slipping and not changing gears at the proper times. thus, i took my car to a transmission repair shop and was advised that my seals and axels had to be replaced. to get a second opinion, i took it to a meineke shop who advised that my axels were fine and that i needed a transmission technician because my problem was greater than i imagine. i contacted a technician in the area and he assessed the situation. the technician advised that the problem was that the behrings on the vehicle were poorly manufactured and thus were causing leakage and slippage. he offered literature on this particular problem which helped me understand. his solution was to completely rebuild the entire transmission but that was a cost that i could not even fathom to bear. this led me to contact a transmission repair technician that i had previously consulted with when i was faced with transmission issues with my 1988 honda accord. this technician diagnosed the car with the same problem as the previous transmission technician. he cautioned that honda accords built in between 1998 and after had those faulty parts in the transmission, thus causing the same problems i was describing. i had to other alternative than to trust this technician with the repair of my transmission since i had previously dealt with him. he was honest and straightforward from the start. as a result, i have had to pay for the repair of the transmission, including new parts; i have had to rent a car in the interim; and i have not been able to obtain any type of answers as to why this happens or why there has not been a recall. the technician has granted me the favor of keeping the old parts and will provide me with an itemized bill for his services, including any parts ordered for the repair/refurbishing of the transmission.

Within the first year of owning my accord v6, my transmission sensor blew out. that was the only thing covered under warranty. i repeatedly expressed concerns to the dealership that there was something with my transmission. it would thump and lurch the car forward or hesitate between gears. repeatedly they assured me this was normal. like everyone who buys a honda, i thought hondas are built to last so maybe this is normal. the fix-it was to flush my systems on numerous occassions. which by the way, made things worse. i had to manually shift an automatic. such irony. now the vehicle only engages 2nd gear. i have been fighting honda with this for 9 months now.*ak

1999 honda accord, 5-speed manual transmission grinds during upshift to 5th gear

1999 honda accord - 63k miles - transmission failed. transmission was serviced about 5k00miles before failure despite not being recommended by honda. honda would not pay for replacement.*ak

1999 honda accord, ex v6, 79k miles, beautifully maintained and only serviced by honda dealerships. original owner was my father (philip garraffa) who leased the vehicle; i purchased the car and the end of the lease - i know it has been taken care of and has never been subjected to excess wear and tear. at times while driving (stepping on the gas), the engine will 'rev', car will not move into gear, then all of a sudden will slam into gear and jerk forward. thankfully this has happened at lower speeds, but this is very dangerous, especially if this were to happen at a higher speed. *ak

While driving at any speed automatic transmission didn't shift properly from the first to the second gear. vehicle was taken several times to the dealership, but problem recurred. *ak

My transmission started slipping. specifically between 1st and 2nd. i took it in assuming that it was something that could be tuned up, but they could not find anything wrong. i drove the car for another week and had it fail miserably. i could not get out of 1st gear and drove home at 5 mph. this time the check engine light went on. the dealer says that i need a new transmission. *la

I own a 1999 honda accord ex 2.3 vtech. i started having transmission problems around 60000, when the car was cold transmission had trouble shifting gears, when the car gets hot transmission is ok. i went to the honda dealer where my friend works as a mechanic and he told me that my transmission is failing and sooner or later it will need to be replaced, he also told me that there are hundreds of people coming to the dealer with the same problem, he also told me that honda issued a recall on 2000 and 2001 hondas accord transmission but they did not issue the recall for 1998 and 1999. i've ended up selling my accord and getting another 1999 honda accord lx 2.3 vtech and few weeks ago i've noticed the same problem. what's going on? if honda won't issue another recall for 1999 accord transmissions, i'll never buy honda again. *jb

1999 honda accord v6 - the transmission slips and will not engage in gear. when it first started to happen, the car would rev up to high rpm's and then engage. now the only way to drive is put in 2nd gear. it will not shift into 3rd or 4th at all. accords from 2000 - 2004 have been recalled for transmission problems. the 1999 should also be recalled. this problem could have resulted in an accident while traveling on highway! *jb
