Rotted rear axle beam , 2002 ford windstar , this vehicle was taken to a near by town ford dealership : ace motors in woodbury nj , for the rear axle recall in 2015 not sure if anything has been repaired or not i was just told by the dealership that the vehicle was inspected and passed and ok to drive but when the axle broke on the driver side i took pitchers and it looks like someone has put on some kind of slave clamps on both sides of the axle that i don't see on other ford windstar mini vans ( see pitchers ) called up the dealership ace motors and they said to bring it up to them and they will have a look at it and maybe it can be put in a claim ticket but again maybe not , it's hard enough to put on a flatbed tow truck with the damage that it has and if some reason they don't put a claim ticket in i can't afford to keep towing this vehicle all over the place so dealership gave me the ford i.n.c company phone number : 800-392-3673 , so i called them and more less they told me there is nothing they can do , one thing i'm happy about is we was going slow in my home town pulling off the main road onto a side road heading to the house when it happened and nobody got heart when it happened even though it was so loud and nosy think it broke a shook and brake lines . 8 / 8 / 2019

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. while driving 15-20 mph, the contact heard an abnormal rubbing noise coming from the vehicle. the contact stopped the vehicle, looked underneath, and stated that the axle was fractured. the contact stated that the anti-lock braking system and brake lights illuminated. the vehicle was towed to the local dealer (fette ford, 1137 u s 46, clifton, nj 07013, (973) 779-7000) where it was diagnosed that the axle fractured and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and informed the local dealer that the axle would not be covered. the failure mileage was 123,500. the vin was not available.

The abs light comes on and stays on the red brake light comes on and stays on it is throwing 9 code starting with c1185 and 8 other that are connected with the first code i ave tried and tried to fix the problem many times it will not pass a safety check. i have done research and his can be dangerous and very unsafe i know it can catch a fire and also the brakes may lock up.

Abs and brake light are on

The abs warning light stays lit after starting.

Exiting highway from off ramp into 4 lane red light intersection at normal speed. applied brakes, no reaction to slow down. pumped brakes still no slowing. drove car into shoulder and field at off ramp. car went through chain link fence and finaly came to a stop when it hit a tree. police responded. no injuries or major property damage. car was towed to garage and finally ford dealer. the brake module failed. month old inpection, no brake problem. police commended fast thinking to avoid a major accident invovling hitting any other vehichles. i have a police report but i do not have a scanner.

Abs recall

Yellow abs light and red brake light come on simultaneously on dashboard in intermittent and random fashion. has been happening over extended period of time - sometimes off, often on. am informed by my mechanic that when these lights are on, the abs braking system is nonfunctioning and therefore, a driving hazard. when these lights are on, brakes are functional but as in standard, non-abs mode. many others have complained about this same problem in the same model vehicle over several model years. seems to be a manufacturer defect that should be corrected before someone is seriously injured or killed. this is not a wear and tear item since it is widely reported in this model and my vehicle has only 84,000 miles of light driving over 15 years.

I get a warning to check the traction control and i get a brake malfunction warning, it resets after i turn the car off and it's sporadic.

I was driving down the road and our and and brake lights had came on. took it to the local shop and was told about the c1185 code was on. we were driving on the way home, and it just comes and goes with every start up and shut off. car was in motion. to my acknowledgement i'm not positive what is causing this issue but i've been researching and have read about many of the same issues in this particular van series. i've read about ford's safety recall number 09s09 and and my vehicle is to be in that recall as well.

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. while driving various speeds, the speed control warning indicator flashed and the abs warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the contact mentioned that several years ago, the abs module was replaced. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 09v399000 (vehicle speed control). the manufacturer was notified of the issue. the failure mileage was 372,000.

Takata recall we recieved a notification of safety recall notice 15s27 of defective rear axle on the vehicle. we having problems with the brakes and that might be the reason we having those issues.

I have a code c1185 it is making my van unstable . it starts to jerk as it goes from 40 to higher speeds it's affecting . it turns out that alot of people are having this issue c1185 abs module

Takata recall it has the abs light on and the brakes feel like is going to pop or dont even work in one point im really scare to drive it change the brake boster and nothing fuse sensor for the a b s. and nothing i wish just to give it back to the ford comp..evry where i go

Brake and abs lights on most of the time, myriad codes, hard to even know where to start troubleshooting...updated 07/30/15 *bf updated 9/23/15 *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. while operating the vehicle, the brake and abs sensors illuminated. when depressing the brake pedal, the stopping distance increased. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the brake fluid reservoir leaked brake fluid. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 200,000.

I try to stop and the abs would not work. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. while operating the vehicle, the brake and abs sensors illuminated. also, when depressing the brake pedal, the stopping distance increased. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the brake fluid reservoir leaked brake fluid. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 200,000.

The hand brake lights up when brakes are applied when coming to a stop. the light will go off and then back on again when brakes are applied again. *tr

The abs and brake light indicators turn on sporadically and remain on until the car is restarted. i have watched for some patterns, but seen few. cooler weather keeps them off longer and when it is hotter out, then they turn on quickly. i might also drive the car for 30-45 minutes before they turn on, and when i restart the car, it is inconsistent on if they come back on or stay off. this has been happening for quite some time and is now happening more routinely than when it first started.

The abs sensor light comes on after a minute of driving. sometimes the emergency brake light will come on when braking. this happen to me after putting in new wheel bearings. then i put in new abs sensors still have problem. alot of other people on the internet are having same issue as me. the i put in speed control deactivation switch. still have same issue. *tr

2002 ford windstar sel with vin [xxx], i am the third owner of this vehicle. the abs and traction control system is damaged and has a recurring warning when the engine is started with the abs / brake and traction control warning lights on. the person i purchased this van from (2nd owner) stated that he had all the recalls completed on this vehicle however he believed that the defect identified in ford safety recall 09s09 for the speed control system has resulted in damage to the abs system computer and/or associated harness wiring or harness connections. he (2nd owner) did not keep the repair orders for any of the recall repairs so i do not have any records to review. i believe that the wire harness, related wire harness connectors and the abs system computer are damaged resulting from brake fluid leaking and/or corrosion related to the defect found in ford safety recall 09s09. i believe that the ford dealership that performed this recall failed to properly repair or identify collateral damage in the wire harness and abs system computer as noted in recall repair procedure. the vehicle is currently not repaired and the abs system is not functioning as designed (non-functioning), i believe this is a safety hazard. current owner: [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Just noticed that the abs light would go on and off, checked fluid levels, fine, and then the light stays on all the time. *tr

Abs lights on. speedometer don't work and overdrive light keeps blinking ..speed control fuse keeps blowing. *tr

Brake pressure differential deactivation switch (scds) switch is leaking brake fluid. *tr

Abs light and brake lights are on. i had the brakes checked and levels are good and pads are fine. abs is non-functioning. this is a common problem. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. the contact stated that while traveling approximately 35 mph, the suspension was unstable, causing a strong vibration and noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. the contact indicated that burning plastic fumes emitted into the vehicle. in addition, the contact mentioned went over a bump and the vehicle was not riding steady. the contact was able to pull the vehicle over and upon further inspection, it was noticed that the rear frame, rear axle and the coil spring fractured. the vehicle was towed to a repair shop who diagnosed that the rear frame, rear brake drums and coil springs needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 90,000.

Driving van hit small bump in road abs system comes on .now l brake get hot due to abs control module coming on . *tr

The abs light comes on and then off a lot. *tr

Abs light and brake light comes on and stays on for days at a time then will go off and remain off for a day or two and then come on again. the problem is that both lights (abs and brake) come on and then will stay on and then go off for various periods of time. have had all of the abs sensors checked and they all check good. problem is annoying and intermittent.

I found seat latches had a recall plus needing a jumper wire installed in a recall so i made apointment at sunland ford in victorville ca 92392 not even one block from leaving the dealer all dash lights came on and after a few miles after exiting the freeway i pulled over and turned off the engine restarted it the lights went out but after a few miles abs and trac light went back on and stayed on now i noticed my door lights dont work know what could they have done ?? [it's not a blown fuse i checked] i called them the nekt morning and they told me to pay them $105.00 and they will check it and tell me how much to fix it seems strange it was not doing this before i took it to them is it revenge for doing the recall??? *tr

Abs brakes failed. *tr

Wife was going to work and brakes just went out. the abs and brake light stays on and has been on after purchasing the vehicle. i am going to look over vehicle again.

Approx., a year ago my abs module went bad and i had it checked by a mechanic to verify that fact. just recently my speed control deactivation switch went bad and leaked,. now i found out there is a connection between both the switch and the abs bad module. ford does not have a recall on the abs system, but they do on the above switch. very possibly the high cost of the module has kept them from having a recall!!! i have read complaints about the same problem from another ford van owner. also the switch was changed approx. 5 years ago and it went bad again.( per a ford recall then) there should be a definite recall on windstar van abs systems and as a safety issue---ford should replace the switch and wire harness again! ..updated 08/12/14 *bf

Abs sensor and brake dash lights would repeatedly flash on and go off intermittently. took it to the local ford dealership and was told the abs sensor and ecu are failing and need to be replaced. *js

Abs lights came on out of nowhere when nothing is wrong with the brakes. *tr

I purchased the 2002 windstar van on 7/15/14 with 155,400 miles. shortly after that the abs light and the brake light came on. i could not find any problem with the brakes nor with braking. the brakes seem to be working fine. the lights seem to reset themselves every so often but will come back on. (note: i am an old school mechanic not a modern day automotive tech). *tr

My abs and brakes lights have been coming on at different times for my 2002 ford windstar for a long while, and stay on now that it is summer. i have tried to fix this problem on two occasions and changed the bad ecm with a new one and the problem has returned both times only after a few months. i made a left turn at about 5 mph with the two lights on and when i applied the brakes at the completion of the turn to stop at a red light the brakes seized and the car continued moving slowly into on coming traffic while making a metal grinding noise. i was able to quickly put the car in park to stop it right under the light. i then turned the car off and back on and the lights went off and the brakes worked normally again. a few blocks later the abs and brake lights came back on but the brakes didn't seize this time. this issue is dangerous and i had both my wife and children in the vehicle with me. ford needs to recall these cars and build a ecm that will not expand during warm months causing the abs system to fail. mechanics have told me that this is a major issue with the windstar. *tr

Loved my windstar then all of a sudden my dashboard lit up like a christmas tree. odd thing is that it is july? first fuse #10 blew, we replaced it n it blew again. after about 6 fuses we just dealt with it. chalked it up to it being a 2002. then the brake light started coming on and off randomly. odd because there is no rhyme or reason to this. it can be on, i can shut my van off to get lunch and boom its off when i come back out. again i chalked it up to being a 2002. the final straw is this abs light. it is on, it is off, it is on, it is still on. i swear this van is possessed and i do not even believe in that stuff. oh and "traction control" is showing up on my dashboard. go figure! i had the 2009 recall #09s09 completed immediately in 2009. however i am still having issues. i have had 3 very good mechanics look at this issue and they say my van is fine. i myself am not very mechanically inclined however i know when something does not make sense and this my friend does not make sense. i repeatedly told my mechanic that this was an electrical problem to which of course he laughed. however after a little yahoo and google he now agrees also. i have never heard of this website until 2 days ago in my research of this issue. hoping that your investigation will make ford do something about this sometime soon? it is costly and beyond frustrating. i can only pray it does not lead to brake problems seeing as though i have children in the van the majority of the time. *tr

Brake and abs lights come on intermittently , the brakes are brand new , the abs light now stays on .. *tr

We continue to have issue with abs and brake light kicking on randomly. when this happens brakes become tight, squeal. brakes and system appears fine. others have the same issue. they need to recall. *tr

The abs and brake lights wont go off. technician says it is a dealer problem with all windstar. brake system could be in danger. very worried about driving. please issue a recall asap. *tr

From a stop, started making a left hand turn when the brake warning light and the abs warning light came on. there may be a possible leak from the scds which could end up causing a fire. i will have it inspected. *js

Abs and brake warning lights keep coming on; connections checked and no apparent loose connections; happens when moving and or sitting still

While driving the abs and brake light will illuminate at the same time within the instrument cluster. while the lights are on, the abs system is inoperable and braking distance is reduced. problem is intermittent. when driving the problem will show up and after turning off the engine and restarting, the lights will go out. issue happens again within a few days/week later. *js

Follow-up on odi # 10593430. on may 26, 2014, after ford dealership in fort walton beach, fl kept my vehicle for a week to fix the cruise control and seat latches recall, i was finally able to pick up my van. they also checked the cause of odometer and speedometer to stopped working, abs and brake light remained on, sliding doors not working, and o/d light flashing; i was told the cause is a defective abs module. they charged me $114.27 to diagnosed the problem and quoted me $1,265.00 to replace the abs module. i showed to ford service advisor, andrew tompitch, a print-out from nhtsa website stating that part of fixing or remedy to the cruise control recall was to "inspect the abs control module connector and repair as necessary." "repairs will be completed free of charge." yet ford charged me for this service and told me that the problems were not the same since my vehicle's scds supposedly did not leak. how could i verified what he told me was true when he wouldn't let me enter the work bay to watch what the technician was doing to my vehicle? andrew admitted that the abs module is defective and that they had replaced several modules due to the same problems as my van. but andrew said it's not part of the recall and wouldn't replace it free of charge. if ford used defective parts such as the abs module, then ford should be responsible to replacing the defective abs module and recall it before a life is lost! *tr

Abs warning light is on while driving vehicle. resets when vehicle is turned off but comes back on once brake pedal is depressed. *tr
