Problems with 2002 Ford Windstar SERVICE BRAKES

On average, the 2002 Ford Windstar starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES and its various aspects after 185 209 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES problems on 2002 Ford Windstar

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. while driving 35 mph, the abs and the brake warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was restarted, but the failure recurred. the failure occurred on numerous occasions. the vehicle was taken to a dealer who stated that the electrical control unit needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 125,000.

Vehicle brakes have failed on three different occasions in the last 4 months, road conditions have been wet on one occasion and dry on the other two. abs and red brake light appear at the same time, but only intermittently. dealership tells me it requires new electronic control unit and hydraulic control unit. *tr

Abs and brake warning lights light up randomly and cruise control stops working. main brakes still function. i see lots of similar complaints online. had brakes repaired twice and the mechanic always mentions a loss of brake fluid. even after that, the problem persists. i do not believe my vin was ever part of the scds switch recall but i am suspicious this may be somehow related (?). if so, there could be risk of a fire and i do not feel safe. i'd like some answers before i spend any more money at local mechanic fixing this car. calling ford dealer tomorrow to see if there is anything they can do. *tr

Abs and brake lights came on and stayed on until restarting engine. problem could not be detected by several mechanics. the brakes are working ok, but the lights come on once in while independent of speed or hitting the brakes. *tr

Check abs light comes on along with check traction control and the hand brake lamp is illuminated. a code check reveals the code as c1185 - abs relay. it is happening with increased frequency now. this happens sporadically under a variety of driving conditions. to clear it i pull over, turn off the engine; wait a few moments and restart the vehicle. *tr

Brake and abs light on after vehicle is operated, parked briefly, and operated again. problem occurs intermittently. worse in hot weather. problem has been on going for two years. *tr

Battery light comes on periodically - driving home my radio shut off, abs brake light came on, dash lights dimmed then shut off, head lights began flashing, heater may have stopped (not sure, was focusing on the next road to pull off on), could not accelerate. i pulled over, shut off the van and waited. a few minutes later it turned over like nothing was wrong. this also happened to me about a month and a half ago. *tr

Abs light and brake light on due to faulty abs module. the issue of the abs brake light is critical in that the abs brake system does not function as designed by ford. the issue is caused by heat in the abs (anti-lock brake system) ecm (electronic control module) (2c219) module causing expansion of a large aluminum plate (heat sink) in the ecm which is attached to the ecm main circuit board at all points. the expansion occurs when the unit gets warm especially in the summer months and causes intermittent electrical connection in the unit because the fragile board is being stretched and malformed. the code most commonly scanned by professional mechanics is code c1185. seen by us owners as a yellow abs brake light. *tr

Vehicle abs light has been on consistently since purchasing vehicle from carhop/ uac. reported the problem to the warranty department only to be told any electrical is not under their warranty! this was reported within a week or so of purchasing the vehicle used for 8500$. since have replaced all four tires for brakes, ( top of the line brakes, not cheap ones) light still remains on after several trips to a shop. anti-lock braking system still inoperable and almost caused crash 12-7-2012 when attempting to stop on a lightly icy road. several other electrical issues have been going on with the car as well. it blows brand new fuses, rated higher than what the slot calls for, the low tire pressure light stays on, despite taking the van to a tire specialist and the correct amount of air placed in each tire. also the crankshaft positioner has caused the vehicle not to start. the air bag light has stayed on and went off after disconnecting the battery. replacing bulbs on the van quit often. at the point of stopping the payments and letting the car company just repo the van. it is a safety hazard on the roads and especially in snowy minnesota where a functionable vehicle is needed in order not to cause a accident! *tr

Code c1185 with abs light error on dash indicating braking problem. *tr

Driving on highway at normal road conditions when the abs and brake alert lights turned on. vehicle was operational. owners manual indicated that brake service was needed. *tr

Brought in van for recalls 09s09, 10s13 and 11s16. this was for the subframe issues and speed control switch. speed control switch was supposed to address leaking brake fluid. brake fluid still leaking and now dealership is charging me for brake switch repair and bleeding of brakes. also abs light came on after service and now dealership says abs sensor needs to be replaced. i believe these are all related to original recall but dealership says no. *tr

As the engine is warming up, at speed at 30 mph, the brake and abs warning lights came on, the braking is losing the efficiency, it took longer distance to stop which could cause accident or serious safety issue. worse if i were at higher speed. we would appreciate if defective parts could be repaired by ford company as recall as i understand that this is common problem for many years. *tr

Hello, the abs light and e-brake light now come on and stay on for extended periods of time. sometimes the lights will not come on, but then come on after i have been driving for a while. *tr

The abs and the brake light both lit up and remained on. when cooler temperatures prevailed, the lights would then go out. this again has occurred most recently on 08-30-2013. the following codes affected were c1185,c1198,c1194,c1254,c1246,c1250,c1214,c1210. *tr

my abs light is on and will not go off and speedometer wouldn't work properly when the weather was really warm, and just september 21st 2012 my car was not able to switch out of park, and on oct.18th 2012 my brake light stop working all together. i have research this problem and there is a recall out on ford windstar 1998-2003 with the same problems. but when i called ford 10/22/12 they check my vin and stated that there was not a recall on my car only ford windstar van with parts made in virginia. i don't understand why my car cant be repair at ford expense when there is evidence that there i s a problem with the car. *tr

My abs and brake warning lamp comes on periodically for no known reason. there was a recall on brake lamp switch a few years back and now this concern exists. *tr

Abs and brake lights on dash came on for first time while driving at 45 mph, not using brakes, they just came on. they have been going off and on intermittently since. seems to happen more when the car is warm. can turn the car on to warm up and the 2 lights will be off at start-up. after a few minutes, both abs and brake lights come on even though car is just idling and no one in the car! sometimes can drive 60 - 70 miles before the lights come on, sometimes they are on at start-up. *tr

We parked the van at walmart and when we started it back up the abs and brake lights came on and stayed on until we shut down and restarted 2 times. it started doing it sporadically. we bought this van used, so we took it back to the dealership and they ran a diagnostic and said that nothing was showing up and just reset the system. the lights had stayed off until sunday, october 14th; they are now starting to come back on sporadically. *tr

Abs light and brake lite come on. i went to tire plus and they indicated that it was code "c1185". i called hoffman ford in harrisburg, pa and they indicated that there was no recall for that code. *tr

Abs brake light and regular brake light comes on and stays on. *tr

The abs going off and on and the brake light is always on and i need to have this check out. *tr

Neighbor came by early and told me the brake lights were on. i went out to inspect but didn't see them on. got in the car an hour later and noticed smoke and horrible "electrical" smell. i checked the entire car, but found nothing, when i went to start it, the battery was dead. had my friend give me a jump, hooked up cables and sat in the windstar for a minute, i then heard crackling and immediately smelled smoke. under closer examination i found it was the center, upper brake light assembly completely melted, bulbs were contorted. had the assembly replaced with a ford part from dealer, three days later it happened again, so i removed bulbs before it completely melted. the center "third" brake light does not shut off, even when car is off, 12, strong volts to bulb socket, on or off! left and right brake lights work fine...for now. i have no doubt my car would have completely been destroyed, had it not been for the battery going dead. *tr

Abs light turns on intermittently, sometimes function of brakes are affected. told my repair shop it is a faulty connection in the abs module. *tr

Brake and abs lights turn on at same time without an apparent cause, this happens after driving van 5 or less minutes at a low speed. once the engine is turned off and restarted again, both lights remain off, and again, after driving the van for a short distance brake and abs lights come on again. *tr

Abs and brake light stay on. *tr

Approximately a week ago, the #10, 15 amp fuse was blown. replaced it with an approved fuse and blew right after i started van up. i had noticed some liquid on garage floor about 2 days before the fuse blew, the "brake" light on dashboard was lit up. i checked the brake fluid level and it was very low. when i added fluid, i noticed there appeared to be a leak of fluid on the front, underside of the master brake cylinder. i had a friend who is a mechanic look at it and he told me the master cylinder could be bad, but looked like the pressure switch was where the leak was originating. upon further inspection, he noticed there was a wire harness that was soaked in brake fluid and beneath another one was wet. he attempted to clean both of them and replaced fuses, but after using the brakes the first time(going out of the driveway) i heard a "pop" and the fuse was blown again. this particular fuse controls the odometer, speedometer, the abs light on dashboard. the amount of fluid going onto the engine is a good probability of a fire starting when the leaking brake fluid is on the hot engine. this seems to be an increasing problem and needs to be recalled. *tr

The abs, brake, and traction control lights all came on. turn on and off intermittently, but stay on longer each time. mechanic says it may be the abs control module and hcu. *tr

Abs and brake warning lights on dashboard came on and when codes were retrieved, it was c1185, abs power relay output circuit fault. *tr

***********updated information from odi number:10554248************ abs and brake warning lights on the dashboard came on and when codes were retrieved, it was c1185, abs power relay output circuit fault. my wife just informed me that when the lights came on, she could feel the brakes be applied just a little on its own (without pressing the brake pedal) for about a second or two. had the codes cleared and the same code came back on a short time later with same reaction from brakes. *tr

I keep having intermittent problems with dashboard warning lights: yellow abs light, yellow trac off light, and red brake light. please note: on approx july 17, 2012 i took my windstar to have this problem checked and have ford recall 09s09 service done. the quick-service manager refused to check the abs control module connecter even after telling them three times that it is required as part of the recall. i was told by a service advisor trainee, to bring vehicle back if problem persists and take to regular service dept. i took the vehicle back to same ford dealership for resolution of this problem and was told there is a $92.00 diagnostic fee. i agreed to fee to see if the repair they recommend is same as repair which should have been covered under recall, and left van there on august 14, 2012. *tr

The abs light and brake light comes on. i hook up the computer and the code read c1185. i read online that this seems to be a problem. if there is that many problems there should be a recall. *tr

Abs/brake module failure. *tr

When driving my abs and brake light show on the dashboard. this has happen in the past . they turned off for awhile about a year then came back on. they are not on all the time but have been on pretty consistent, my mechanic tried to fix the problem but alas still on. *tr

Though i've replace rear cylinders and brake pads (inside the rear drums) about one week ago (197,992), sometimes when i stop at an intersection or stop sign, with the parking brake off, the red "brake (!)" dash light comes on. when i resume movement, it goes off. i've been to my local ford dealer and neither time have they fixed it (28 sep & 4 oct 12). i even had the entire hand brake assembly replaced. on-line sources lean towards ecu/hcu failure. i change all fluids every 25-30k; the last time the brake fluid was flushed was at 190,000 on 22 may 12. the front brake pads were replaced then, too. i have detailed maintenance records-i'm the original owner. my abs light has not come on, yet. *tr

Van intermittently has abs light, trac control off light, and emergency brake light all on at various times. if vehicle is turned off sometimes lights go off sometimes they do not. also at random times the theft light will come on and van will immediately shut off (this occurs at speeds over 35mph). in addition the power steering reservoir will not hold fluid. needs to have fluid added at least 2 times a day. with the exception of the power steering issue, the brake failure and the theft system failure is extremely dangerous. i have seen numerous complaints regarding these items. i took my vehicle to ford for repair of the recall on the speed module and they told me that these other issues were not their problem. i called ford customer service and the individual on the phone told me that if i felt it was unsafe then i should sell my van. this is an extremely dangerous problem with ford vans....the brakes fail and the theft system is faulty!!!!!! they should not be allowed to manufacture any vehicles!!!! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. the contact stated that the abs and brake warning lamps illuminated. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 122,000.

Abs light came on while driving on highway 7/24/2012. had abs reset a week later. then on 9/13/2012 while driving 30mph abs and brake lights lite up. stopped and checked brake fluid, all full. restart engine and lights went out. *tr

I was driving on the road and it had been raining earlier when i tapped my brakes to go around the curve i started sliding into the oncoming traffic and almost hit a van . i tried to steer back into my lane but it wouldn't let me .if the van hadn't been able to get out of my way i would have hit them. i wasn't able to get traction until i was off the pavement on the side if the road. *tr

Our abs light came on for the 3rd time in two weeks. light goes off when car is turned off and back on. took it to a repair shop and the code they gave was c1185. they said that there is nothing they can do to fix it long term. they also said that abs will not be engaged when light is on creating a potential dangerous situation. we were told that this is something they have seen in other windstars the same age. *tr

At drive-through, radio suddenly quit, and the abs and brake lights came on. right turn signal came on, vehicle began to pulsate and surge. pulled over and shut van off, would not restart, lights and hazards began flashing and would not turn off. retried ignition, lights and hazards went off, van completely died. informed to replace battery, had battery tested, it was fine. replaced battery, followed instructions to reset computer after battery replacement. had to drive van 10 miles to complete, during which abs and brake light came on, headlights quit (after dark) then began flashing. turn signal came on to signal right turn on its own. just before returning home, headlights quit entirely, and airbag light came on. parked van, let it idle, and the tachometer surged from 500rpms to 3000rpms. seems to fit descriptions others are saying about abs and speed control module underneath master cylinder getting soaked with brake fluid. *tr

While driving my 2002 ford windstar on july 6, 2012, my abs light and brake light came on simultaneously and stayed on for approximately 20 minutes until i arrived home. the next day, july 7, 2012, when i started my car in the morning to run errands the lights were not on. later on that day, i started my car and began driving and after about five minutes of driving once again the abs light and brake light came on and stayed on until i shut the car off. this has continued to happen as of the date i am typing up this complaint to you. it goes on and off whenever it feels like it and is very random, just like so many other problems with our 2002 ford windstar. our electrical system in our ford windstar also works whenever it feels like it as far as locking the doors, opening the doors, etc. it is difficult to ascertain what is causing the abs light and brake light to keep coming on so randomly as there are days it does not come on at all and i feel this is something the ford company should be responsible for looking into. i would respectfully like my name added to others who have reported this problem and are demanding a recall. as i understand it, this could become a very serious problem and even involve a fire. i would appreciate your serious consideration when looking into this recall. thank you for your serious consideration. *tr

First, the power steering wasn't working and parts of it had to be repaired and replaced. but the worrying thing is that the abs yellow light and the red brake icon on the dashboard often come on and remain on while we're driving. that is worrying, as we don't know if it means the brakes are faulty or not. a firestone mechanic said it was because of rust build-up, but i don't like that the yellow abs and the red brake icons come on, because who knows if that means the brakes won't work or not. from my online research, this seems to be a common problem with ford windstars, and needs to be addressed! *tr

I'm not sure if this is the brakes or the lighting on the dashboard, but the abs and brake light on the dashboard light up. i have had it checked, and the mechanics keep saying the brakes are fine, but the lights often stay on, especially in warmer weather (and hardly at all in colder weather). this has been going on since we got the car, from july 2012 to the present. *tr

Brake light and abs constantly come on in hot weather. brakes checked by service dept and no problems found. has been occurring last four summers. *js

The abs light and emergency brake warning lights have been staying on. while the lights are on, i tested the abs by attempting an emergency stop on wet roads. the abs did not function and the vehicle was losing control. i've since hooked the vehicle to a diagnostic code reader and received multiple abs codes. after researching online for others with similar problems, i am aware that multiple people are having problems with the abs computer. *tr

Abs light comes one when the air temp is 90 degree plus and stay on until the engine is turned off. it will say off for maybe a few minutes to a couple hours. in the past 24 hours, the abs light came on twice in three trips. last year, when it was hot, it did about the same. as i understand it, when the light comes on, my brake's anti-lock is nonoperational while the light is on and scares me until i can safely pull to the side of the road to turn off the engine. *js

I was driving at highway speed (65mph) in heavy traffic when the abs (yellow) and brake (red) lights suddenly came on. i continued driving since there was no place to stop. when i had to suddenly stop, stopping distance was reduced by lock up of the brakes. a few minutes later, i was able to stop the vehicle, turn off the ignition, restart the vehicle and both lights turned off. the lights came on later in the trip. this on and off abs and brake light scenario was repeated four times that day, luckily no more sudden hard braking stops were necessary. it was very hot that day with temperatures near 90 degrees. i took my vehicle to my local repair facility three days later and described the situation above. the vehicle was test driven by the shop throughout one day. the shop could not get the abs and brake lights to come on during driving as i had described. braking action was normal for the vehicle. on my service invoice, the shop reported a stored computer code c1185 - abs power circuit malfunction, but no problem found. the shop asked that i monitor the situation and bring the vehicle back in when the abs light consistently is "on" so that the problem can be diagnosed correctly. reluctantly i am going to follow the shop's advice. *tr

Abs brake lights and brake light turning on randomly and no issues with abs. *tr

Abs light stays on, brake light occasionally comes on and eventually goes out but abs stays on. *tr
