Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES problems on 2002 Ford Windstar

The abs light and brake light started coming on. now they come on all the time. *tr

Both abs and brake warning light come on randomly and stay on till car is shut off and started again then after a couple of mins or a bump lights come on again. *tr

Alarm warning lights come on for abs airbag and speedometer and tach fails. *tr

While driving, dash abs light and dash brake light come on. occurs more often in warmer weather, but does occur on occasion in winter (cincinnati, ohio climate). do i have abs brakes or not when light chooses to come on while driving? *tr

Abs light came on intermittently at first. around 100,000 miles. then it came on solid... with regular brake light on as well. ford dealer said it was the abs control module. *tr

My abs and brake lights keep coming on and off. i have had the entire brake system replaced and the abs sensors. there is no particular thing that causes them to come on. in fact sometimes i will be driving down the road and not even touching the brakes and they will just pop on. i don't feel that we as ford owners should have to pay a costly repair bill to have multiple things done to the vehicle when this seems to be an issue with the vehicle itself not normal maintenance. i have always been a ford owner and have sworn by ford but this van is causing me to not want to own another ford ever. *tr

Abs light continuously coming on and going off, tire sensor lights coming on and going off when tire pressure is ok. took to mechanic in 9/2013 and diagnosis was that abs module needed replacement. *tr

Abs and brake failure light came on. brakes still work, but the abs system is sometime shut off. lights reset after a few weeks, but then come on again at random times not related to braking. abs code are numerous and all hit at the same time as the c1185 code. the other codes are for the input and output valve failure on each wheel. this has been happening for over two years now and i see that many owners of this vehicle have the same problem that points to the control module and possibly bad circuit board solder joints. vehicle has been in for rear axle corrosion recall. *tr

After purchasing used van the abs and brake lights lit up on dash, and come on intermittently while driving. weather seems to play a role whether the lights come on or not if its hot outside the lights come on quickly, and if it's raining they come on going through puddles. once the lights come on they stay on until the van is shut off. had a diagnosis done a ford dealer, and was told there is a leak over the abs brake module that is causing it to short out the abs system. *tr

The abs system fail and the car lost control. *tr

Brake lights, red + amber on the dash, are on almost constantly. not a mechanical problem. design failure in part 2f2z-2c219-ba causing failure. i understand that the board expands and contacts with the heatsink plate the circuit board is attache to. *tr

The abs warning lights come on and turn off at various times under different conditions. *tr

Abs and break light come on when applying the breaks. checked the break several time but there was nothing wrong. *js

Abs and break light comes on randomly while driving. seems to be more of a problem in the summer. *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. the contact stated that while at a traffic stop, the vehicle erroneously accelerated. the vehicle began to function normally several moments later. the contact also stated that the brake, abs and over drive off warning lights illuminated intermittently. the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where it was determined that the master cylinder failed and was leaking brake fluid onto the electrical components. the vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not contacted about the failure. the failure mileage was 150,000.

Upon startup and while driving the abs and brake light will illuminate. this has been consistent and usually occurs at least 5 days a week. *tr

For the past several years my van has has intermittent problems with the brake lights on dash appearing while driving the car at various speeds. once i stop the car and turn it off the lights will usually disappear but sometimes will come back within minutes of restarting car. this tends to happen during warmer times of year versus winter. also i have noticed a problem with brakes even right after getting them replaced. the mechanic says there is nothing wrong with the brakes?? around the same time this started to happen my cruise control stopped working. i had recieved a notice from ford about cruise control recall but when i called the local dealer and told them that my cruise control was not working and i was wondering if it had something to do with recall they said no, that was not the problem. *tr

The brake light and emergency brake light came on all of a sudden and the braking performance degraded and the braking distance requirement is long. this could be a safety issue. as i understand, the issue is the defective sensor with the soldier distance expanded due to the heat. *tr

The abs and brake warning lights come on intermittenly. problem appears to occur more often in warmer weather. does not come on when engine started but after driving both warning lights come on. this has been a problem for a few years. *tr

The brake and the abs lights keep coming on they have been doing this for a couple of years. *tr

Yellow abs and red brake lights come on. o/d light flashes. resets when car is turned off, but the abs and brake light come on shortly after staring to drive. had brake fluid leaking from the master cylinder and had that replaced. brakes work and fluid level is fine. when o/d light is flashing, car jerks on first transmission shift. have to turn off car and restart to get rid of flashing o/d light. *tr

Back in 2008 my abs and brake lights would come on while driving to work. i had the problem looked at at my local ford dealership. they diagnosed the problem as the ecu/hcu control box. but because my extended warranty did not want to pay for the 1200.00 bill because they felt that only the electronic side and not the hydraulic side needed to be replaced. so i then went to another ford dealer and they diagnosed and replaced only the electronic side. there were 3 times that i had to pay the $100.00 deductible to have the same problem diagnosed, which was eventually fixed(no more lights) by the second dealer. then in june of 2013,now with 116,563 miles on it,my gauge cluster started to act funny. all of a sudden when i was driving, the gauge needles would move out of control. eventually the tac needle pegged itself all the way to the right and the speedometer quit working. i took it to the ford dealer and they replaced the gauge cluster with a rebuilt one for $789.00. since that time i have not had any more issues with the gauge cluster. i was told by the tech that this is a common problem with the windstars. i also have a 2001 ford windstar that has 105,000 miles on it that i am thinking about selling so i don't have to endure the cost of a gauge cluster in it. also along with having to replace fuel pumps in both vehicles at a cost of around $1000.00 each i am wondering if ford has a good product. thanks for your time. *js

I was driving on a street and the car in front of me came to a sudden stop. i immediately had to brake and then the abs light and main brake light came on and stayed on. i took the vehicle to a dealer and they told me that the abs module was bad and i asked them if the knew why and they told me that they did not know. i then asked if the vehicle was safe to drive and they said yes but i would not have abs brakes. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. while operating the vehicle, the abs sensor light and brake sensor light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician reset the lights in order to turn it off, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 64,000.

On june 16, 2006, while vehicle was parked in a parking lot, someone informed us that my 2002 ford windstar was smoking from under the hood. an internal fire occurred, damaging the wiring harness and windshield wiper motor. unaware to the cause of said fire the damaged parts were replaced. then other problems started to arise, the vehicle cruise control stopped working, the abs/brake light remained on and the speedometer was not working properly (not accurately reading). the local ford dealer was informed of the before-mentioned problems including the internal fire that had occurred , at the time of the initial brake pressure deactivation switch recall. the dealer stated that the brake pressure deactivation switch indeed was leaking and that they supposedly checked the abs control module. still the abs/brake light remained on and the speedometer did not work properly. on 3/14/14 the windstar was taken to a local garage to diagnose the abs/brake issues again. it was determined that said unit needed to be replaced. the abs module was subsequently removed and examined the control module (3/21/2014). the abs module suffered an internal fire and the wiring harness connector was melted and damaged. also found was evidence of significant burning around the pins at the connections. this evidence included the blackened fluid, severe discoloration, and lifted traces, all of which are clearly apparent in photos of the module interior. the local dealer refused to repair or replace the module under the recall claim, stating that it was not part of the recall, and that said recall was closed. ford has been negligent in this matter and luckily the vehicle prior to today, has not become a runaway fire event and burned to the ground!! at this time the vehicle has not been repaired, and is sitting idle. i have kept the damaged control module for examination. *tr

Left ford dealership with my just purchased 02 ford windstar. within 10 miles of dealership abs and brake light came on. returned to dealership on monday. tried to charge me diagnostic fee for issue.... wouldn't fix problem unless i paid for parts and labor. i complained numerous times. said wasn't their problem and not a recall. still having issue. now vehicle has abs light on (without brake light). check engine light came on. barely made it home.... going back to dealership tomorrow. i will never again purchase a ford. especially not from dealership that won't correct problem even though i paid $2k extra for extended warranty. *tr

Abs brake light comes on, cruise control will stop working or will not work at all and speedometer/odometer electrical problems (speedometer will at times jump up or down when showing speed (mph) at times all the warning lights in the instrument panel will come on and off. right now i have the yellow abs light on, also the red brake light is on. in a few days they may turn off, only to turn back on a few days later. i an very concerned about the abs light, with the light on, does the abs system still work? i bought this windstar new in nov. 2002. brakes have be replaced and or checked and it keeps doing the above. note: vehicle has 66,000+ miles. *tr

Transmission light in dash has been on for years now. local dealers tell me there is nothing wrong. they take my money and don't fix the problem. abs light is on. parts were bought and replaced by the dealer with in a year light back on. cruise control cut out replaced twice. dealer cant figure these problems out but if enough of your own research is done there are ways to figure out what is going on. even if the dealer can't front frame mounts are rusting so bad you can pull it apart with your hands certified safe from dealer. *tr

As the outside temperature rises, the brake and abs brake warning light came on and my brake effectiveness reduced and took much longer braking distance to stop the minivan. this is a safety issue that may lead to crash or accidents. *tr

Abs and brake light on continuously. *tr
