We have classified the 921 complaints from 2011 Ford Fusion about STEERING into the following categories.
The electronic power steering has completely failed. the safety issue this caused could have been easily catastrophic. growing up in non-power steering years i know the effort it took to steer, especially when not moving. however, our 2011 ford fusion , since the electronic power steering failed you can hardly turn the wheel at all. i am thankful my wife was not going at interstate speed and trying to exit when this happened. i looked on consumer report to see if any others or if any recalls were reported. i found that 445,000 were recalled by ford, 2011-2013. many models were recalled for this same problem. however, when i called two different dealerships they said our 2011 was not covered. the dealership said it was only those with certain vin numbers. so, our vehicle not one of the 445,000 recalled, has the same problem, same safety issues is not covered. ford knows there's a problem, but they are failing to admit it. we have just over 71000 miles on this vehicle. like many other before us i am counting on the ntsb to encourage ford to do the right thing and recall these faulty unsafe electronic power steering units and replace them. when you have 445000 problems you have a problem. the incident happened on a secondary road as well as stationary parked. i'm glad i was test driving it for my wife no way could she could of turned the wheel. thank you
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford fusion. the contact stated while her nephew was driving at approximate 60 mph, the vehicle lost power steering functionality and drifted to the right of the road with no warning lights illuminated. the contact's nephew was able to power off the vehicle however it took several attempts to restart the vehicle. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic for a diagnosis or repairs. a dealer was notified and informed the contact the repairs to replace the electronic power steering would be $2,000. the contact referenced the failure to nhtsa campaign number: 15v34000 (steering). the manufacturer was informed of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 159,000.
I started my car up and the warning came on saying power steering assist default.i can not turn the wheel it is very hard to steer.i brought this car used from the ford dealership on 09/24/18.my car was stationary but it could have happen on the highway i am glad it did not at 70 years old i thank god.it is the electric power steering assist in these ford cars and they are dangerous i want my car fixed by ford.
Last night while driving thru the city, a dashboard light came in indicating there was a problem with my power steering and it became very difficult to steer my car. when i turned the car off and then restarted it, the steering was normal, but a few minutes later, the steering stiffened again and the warning light came back on. luckily, i got home safely, with a lot of effort. but, thus is a very dangerous malfunction. i understand that there is a recall on this issue, but my vin isn't included. why?
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford fusion. the contact stated that while his daughter was driving at about 30 mph, the steering assist warning light illuminated. the driver pulled into the parking lot and the vehicle experienced the power steering failure. the contact called the charlie henderson ford, inc. located at 105 u s 90, waveland, ms 395760 and was informed that the vehicle was over the mileage and therefore not covered by a warranty program. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vehicle was not covered. the failure mileage was approximately 192,000.
I was drivin when my car started flashing service power steering and sevice power trac. the steering got a little stiffer, when i started the car back after putting gas in the power steering was completely out. there is a recall on them from 2010 to 2015, but i have not recieved anything about it and when i search vin it shows there is no recalls. i dont understand why my fusion is not recalled but does have the problem.
Oil, abs, and traction control lights came on. "service advancedtrac" code on dash. no power steering.
While pulling out of a parking spot my power steering failed -with no power assist. i shut the car off briefly and restarted it and the steering was normal. the next stop was30 minutes later and the same thing happened except this time the power steering did not return. warning messages, "power steering assist fault" and "service advance track" appeared. looking up recall information, my vehicle's problem exactly matched recall # 15v340000 issued in 2015. however, my local ford dealer stated my car was not included in the recall because of where it was manufactured. the recall seems to be a scam with an "easy out" for ford on this dangerous condition. it should be expanded to cover the real-world ford owners who are stuck with an unsafe vehicle while being told their vehicle was made in the wrong factory to be covered. unless there is an action taken on this scam, we are stuck with an unwarranted $2000 repair bill. and we have no choice other than to try to find user-friendly manufacturers and hope that the nhtsa does its job.
There where recalls awhile back. and one it had to do with the fuel system when i did the recall for it a year later i had the same issue took it to ford an they want me to pay over 500 for it when it was a recall the fuel light came on it says check fule inlet. it has disappeared now an the check engine light went away. there was a recall for the power steering. my steering wheel is locking it said that power steering locked. and they said that i cant do the recall. i have a 2011 ford fusion se. and the only recall they said was there was for the air bags. i want to know why i cant get these things fixed. i only have one car on a fixed income i own the car. an now i need answers
I was driving on the highway and then a indicator appeared saying 'service power steering now.' i then realized that my steering wheel had become stiff and it had locked up. luckily i was close to home however, it became very difficult to make turns once i got off of the highway. there is currently no recall on my 2011 ford fusion regarding this matter. this is obviously a safety issue and it needs to be dealt with.
I was driving into a left turn at a green light and the power steering went out, luckily i was going slow enough to fight with the steering wheel to make the turn. it could have easily been an accident if i was not aware of cars and how they function. that was about a week ago and now today the same thing happened except i was making a right turn and i was not able to stay on my side of the street because of how tough it was to turn, no cars were around so i just stopped and turned the car off for a min then when i started it back up it was like nothing happened.
Two times in the past week my power steering assist fault has popped up on my dashboard and my steering wheel has been locked up. after turning it off and leaving it for a few hours and trying again it's fine like it never happened. but being it is electrical i can not just put fluid in it. this issue concerns me because i do not know if i will be driving down a highway and all of a sudden it will pop up and lock my steering up or i will be stranded somewhere. since it just pops up and goes away eventually this is a major issue!
Power steering assist falt fault notice displayed intermittently at startup normally clearing with 2nd start. this eventually resulted in total failure of the power steering.
Getting code "power steering assist fault " on the dash board read out. the steering stops working and can't turn the steering wheel. if i turn off the car and restart the car, the steering starts working again. this happened while the car was moving (driving the car) on a city street.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford fusion. while attempting to turn left from a stopped position, the power steering seized and nearly caused a head on collision. afterwards, several warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle was able to be steered to the side of the road and the contact managed to drive home. george coleman ford (47 plaza dr, travelers rest, sc 29690, (864) 834-6090) scheduled a loaner vehicle for the contact and discovered that the vehicle exceeded the warranty by 1,000 miles. the manufacturer was not going to cover the repairs and the entire steering rack and pinion system needed to be replaced. the manufacturer stated that they would not cover the failure even though it did not appear before the warranty expired. the failure mileage was 151,088.

While i was driving i got a warning message saying that i power steering failure and service advancetrac. my steering wheel was too tight to even a make a turn.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford fusion. while the contact's wife was driving 55 mph, the steering lost power and the service power steering now indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to york ford rentals (781-231-1945, located at 1481 broadway, saugus, ma 01906) where it was diagnosed that the gear assembly needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to nhtsa. the failure mileage was approximately 118,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford fusion. while driving 25 mph, the steering wheel seized and the service power steering now warning indicator illuminated. the contact stated that extra strength was needed to steer the vehicle. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for diagnostic testing or repairs. ron tirapelli ford (4355 w jefferson st, shorewood, il 60431, (815) 725-3033) and rod baker ford sales inc. (16101 s lincoln hwy, plainfield, il 60586, (815) 436-5681) were notified and informed the contact to bring the vehicle in to be diagnosed. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 186,000. *pm*jb
When trying to start vehicle, power steering assist failure notification comes on and power steering is disabled. car must must be turned off and restarted to turn off notification and enable power steering. this has happened on several occasions already. there is a recall on the power steering control module for the 2011 ford fusion but not for my specific vin number. the recall numberis 1518. the date noted in report, november 15, 2019 was the latest incident. it happened twice that day.
Sporadically upon startup i would get a power steering assist failure warning with car reverting to manual steering. rebooting the car would clear the fault. took it back to the dealer i purchased it from, they pulled codes and said they could not find a problem. this happened every few weeks for the next year. last week the fault reappeared accompanied by warning that advance trac needed servicing and did not clear with reboots of the vehicle. car was still drivable with manual steering. made appointment with jack madden ford in norwood, mass to have them repair the issue on 26 nov 2019. i see that this exact set of failures matches recall #15v340000, but when i look up my vin, mine is not included in that recall. sounds like the recall needs to be expanded.
Driving today and power steering flashed on dash and steering locked up could not turn the wheel either way i see there are a lot of complaints on this issue and recalls don't know what to do. when looked up recall using vin nothing came up but i see all these complaints that are exactly what happen to my car. very dangerous the steering just locked up. thank god i wasn't going fast because my children where with me when this happen. had to turn car off and when started it again it was fine but i see that it will happen again and again til the car while no longer be drivable everyone said on here. so why is this not recalled. very dangerous issue.
The steering assist error code came on. the recall says for 2011 ford fusion . how do i find out the part # that is faulty. the car has less than 40,000 miles on it. how do they know every part that has been put on that car. it is an issue and they say mine is not on the list????
Hard to turn the wheel when driving. didn't start till i was taking a trip.
2011 ford fusion after starting from cold start the car will not steer. it is stuck in lock position. this has happened at least three times but that powersteering assist failure didnt come until last week. wheels are straight not not turned extreme left or right and the steering wheel will stick in straight position. not able to turn steering wheel right or left. this has happened three times that i can recall. i purchased the car with 24k in aug 2016. the car now has 64k and sat for @8mos last year due to the tokata recall.i see a recall but my vin does not show up although it has the same symptoms as other 2011 ford fusions recall 422,814 model year 2011 to 2013 fusion, flex and lincoln mks and mkt, model year 2011 to 2012 lincoln mkz and 2011 mercury milan vehicles for a possible electrical issue that can lead to steering difficulties. the manufacturer says the issue ' an intermittent electrical connection in the steering gear ' can result in loss of electric power steering assist while driving. if the loss of power steering occurs, the system defaults to manual steering mode making it difficult to steer and increasing the risk of a crash. the power steering assist failure light came on. the fourth time it happened at work and vehicle was stationary and wheel would not unlock. i turned the car off and it seemed to reset itself.
Intermittent power steering assist fault light came on for a couple months randomly upon starting the vehicle. after turning the vehicle off then back on again it cleared the error and the sterring became easy. after a couple months of this when turning the vehicle on the error came again along with advancetrac error and the steering is gone and the errors codes stay. ford said the steering gear needs replacement and it's costing me $2,000 to fix. not sure why it's not under recall since it's the same issue as the others and it only has 39,000 miles on it. $2,000 is a ton of money.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford fusion. while the contact's wife was driving approximately 25 mph, the power steering suddenly failed. the driver attempted to turn the vehicle and drove off the road. the undercarriage of the vehicle struck the ground abruptly and was damaged. the driver's neck was injured, but did not require medical attention. a police report was not filed. the vehicle was driven back to their home where it later failed to restart. sonora ford (located at 13254 mono way, sonora, ca 95370, 209-532-5593) informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v340000 (steering). the contact took the vehicle to a certified mechanic who diagnosed that the power steering control module failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle had not been repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and verified that the vehicle was not included in the recall. the manufacturer referred the contact to nhtsa to file a complaint. the approximate failure mileage was 96,700.
The steering wheel started to jerk. shortly after this happened, the power steering stopped working entirely. the instrument panel displayed a notice that said service power steering now. the tcs light came on when the power steering stopped working.
While driving on the street making a slight turn my ford fusion 2011 experienced full electronic power steering failure. extremely dangerous. i had this same issue 4 years ago in dec. 2015 (46,000 odometer) with the electronic steering unit (pscm) and had it replaced and reprogrammed at the ford dealership. this is a very expensive $1800 part to have to replace a second time (74,000 odometer). contacted the ford service line and was told there was nothing they could do.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford fusion. while the contact's father was driving 60 mph, the steering seized and the steering wheel could not be turned. there was no warning indicator illuminated. the failure recurred several times intermittently. the vehicle was taken to taylor ford of waynesville (828-452-5111, located at 524 russ ave, waynesville, nc 28786) where the technician replaced the air bags and the driver's side floor mat. the steering was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that there was no steering recall. the failure mileage was 73,000.
Power steering to this car went on me as i was driving home from work. this is very dangerous . i see i am not the only one that is having issues with this, there needs to be a recall done on this as i am not paying 1800 on this part when it isn't just my car.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford fusion. while driving 70 mph, the power steering became inoperable. the contact managed to pull the vehicle over to the side of the road. the manufacturer stated that the previous owner had the vehicle repaired per an unknown recall. there were no current recalls on the vehicle. the vehicle was towed to davis ford sales inc. (904 w main st, fulton, ms 38843, (662) 862-3711) where it was determined that the vehicle exceeded the warranty mileage limit; therefore, the repair would cost $1,300. the failure mileage was 159,000.
This car has been carried in twice for losing power steering. it happened again on 09/28/19 where an accident was involved. power steering was lost while making a left hand turn causing an accident. could not pull codes off computer as power was lost by accident.no air bags were deployed nor did seat belt engage
I was driving down the highway almost home when a 'power steering assist faulty' notification appeared in the dash. as i approached my driveway i realized i could barley turn to get out of the highway.
The power steering failed to operate correctly and the dash displayed a "power steering assist fault" and "service advancetrac system" warning during startup. the error repeated during several starts and finally became constant.
Takata recall. no power steering, saying service advance track no power steering.
Power steering assist fault occurred intermittently. took to to dealer to have an older recall performed. several days later, power steering failed completely shortly after starting while in a parking lot. i almost hit another parked car when i suddenly could not turn. apparently this is a known issue, i don't understand why ford is permitted to have this persist. this is a serious safety issue! there could have been a person walking there!!!!
My car was 100% fine when i drove to work and 3 hours later when i was driving for lunch there was a message that there was a power steering assist fault. thankfully i was not in a busy area because i could barely crank my wheel to turn. there is a recall for 2011 ford fusions but my vin was not included. yet with no indicators my power steering does not work.
Purchased my car from ford in april 2015, have had 0 issues with it, until thursday evening sept 5, 2019. on the way to work, everything was fine. leaving work, everything was fine... until i got on a 55mph highway, in traffic, in heavy rain (due to hurricane dorian entering our area). out of nowhere, my power steering warning and advance trac lights came on and i lost complete steering function in my vehicle. i am almost 5 months pregnant and almost wrecked in 2 lanes full of traffic of other people heading home from work in such weather! upon research, 400,000+ ford fusion 2011's have been recalled over this same exact issue - yet it seems that no one's vin #s match with the recalled vehicles. yet again, over 2000+ recent complaints on nhtsa website as well! this is ridiculous - almost 2 years left to pay on my loan and my vehicle doesn't match the vin for the recall - when obviously, yes it [xxx] well does! i had to call for help because i'm too pregnant to forcefully manhandle the wheel that barely turns 2 inches to either side, to try and steer a vehicle with no power steering! luckily we had family in from out of town who evacuated from the beach that could help us get the car home. would ford be paying for my accident and injuries to potentially 2 because, again i'm pregnant - and then anyone else i could have hit on my exit! this is related to an obvious ongoing electronic failure! this needs to be addressed & fixed now! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
Tl* the contact's father owns a 2011 ford fusion. the contact stated that his father received a recall notice in july of 2015 for nhtsa campaign number: 15v340000 (steering). the contact's father took the vehicle to all american ford (3306 bridge ave, point pleasant, nj 08742, 732-451-3582) to be diagnosed, but no failure was found. the dealer updated the electronic system and returned the vehicle to the contact's father. recently, when the vehicle was started, the power steering fault warning indicator illuminated and the contact's father had difficulty steering the vehicle. for some time, the contact's father was able to restart the vehicle and it resumed normal operation. the contact stated that the failure had become more persistent. the contact's father returned to the dealer and was informed that he was no longer eligible for a recall repair. the contact's father was given a quote of $2,200 to replace the power steering rack and paid a $125 diagnostic fee. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact was unaware if the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 35,120.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford fusion. while driving 40 mph, the transmission seized and the service now, power steering, and advancetrac warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that the vehicle had excessive mileage. the dealer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 199,000.

Driving in a parking lot to pick up my son and went to park and the power steering went out. so i wasn't going very fast i was parking. even though i was in no danger or anyone else i feel that this could have gone worse, thankfully it did not. it went without warning.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford fusion. while driving approximately 15 mph, the contact attempted to make a turn and the power assist failure indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the power assist failed. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 15v340000 (steering), stating that the vehicle was exhibiting the same symptoms as stated in the recall. the vehicle was not repaired. the dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 147,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford fusion. while driving approximately 35 mph, an audible alarm was heard and "power steering assist fault service advancetrac" was displayed. in addition, the steering wheel became very difficult to turn in either direction. the vehicle was towed to john kennedy auto group (620 buffalton pike, feasterville, pa) where it was diagnosed that the steering gear/rack was faulty. the steering gear/rack was replaced and the failure was remedied. the manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. the failure mileage was 135,000.
While stationary, power steering locks up and gives error code on display. its the same problem described in recall 15s18. it happens intermittently. over the last 2 months it has happened about 7 times. i have to shut the car off then back on and it will function correctly.
Power steering went out while i was driving about 40 miles ph.. almost wrecked head on with another vehicle. found that the steering was recalled and ford refused to help. greensboro, north carolina on a street before coming to a curve.
I was driving home from work route 130 nu torrential down pour and i get a power steering assistant warning then i lose all power steering , thankfully i didn't wreck i was able to get off main highway to side road turned off vehicle hoping that would reset fault to no avail problem still there. i managed to get home safely took care to my mechanic i was told it was my rack and pinion and told me it would be a healthy bill almost 2k to fix. i also in turn found out there was a recall for my model year went on website to find out my vin wasn't included in the recall which makes no sense at all, why would mine be excluded if it has the faulty part the same a others....how does ford get away with not fixing all the faulty units?????

Power steering failure while my 16 year old daughter was driving on a residential street. luckily there was no accident although my vehicles manufacture date falls just before ford recall 15s18 leaving me to pay for a problem all parties have already agreed that is fords lack of engineering and quality assurance. how were the dates determined this recall? my car was made a couple weeks earlier and has the exact same defect as described in the recall. this recall needs to be amended to include vehicles manufactured earlier.
