Problems with 2012 Ford F-150 ENGINE

On average, the 2012 Ford F-150 starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 34 446 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2012 Ford F-150

Timing chain broke

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. while driving 75 mph in fog, the contact attempted to pass a tractor trailer. the vehicle hesitated, failed to accelerate, and decelerated to 60 mph. in addition, the check engine warning indicator illuminated, the rpms fluctuated between 2000-4000, and the gear shifted from fourth to sixth gear. the local dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. the failure mileage was 51,000.

Low oil pressure light comes on and truck shuts down, low oil pressure sensor replaced but problem still exist, vehicle was in motion when this happens, it happened 4 times in 2 months

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. the contact stated that the engine stalled while driving over 70 mph. the contact heard a beep sound and the low oil pressure indicator illuminated when the failure occurred. the failure was experienced several times. the contact was able to move the vehicle onto the road shoulder, restart the engine, and drive to david wilson's villa ford (2550 north tustin street, orange, ca 92865, (714)-509-5615). the dealer performed a diagnostic test that located failure code: 27 (fuel pump). the dealer stated that the fuel pump fuse was located in an area that caused the fuse to overheat. the dealer relocated the fuel pump fuse to another area that would not cause the fuel pump fuse to overheat. the manufacturer was not contacted. the vehicle was repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 94,000.

Secondary timing chain link came apart soon after i bought the truck in 2015 at 66,000 miles my warranty paid for it. now it is happening again but on the other side of the engine. 2 time chain links fall apart. ford is not paying for this because my warranty was up 2 months ago and it is not a pre certified truck, miles are 120,066 miles. 2 timing chain links break in 4 years???????? the technicians at santa maria ford said they have never seen anything like this before. ford is denying to pay for this repair!!!!!!!

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. the contact stated that the vehicle would not accelerate past 25 mph. the contact had to move the vehicle over to the side of the road because it continued to decelerate. when the contact turned off and restarted the vehicle, it operated normally. the vehicle was taken to mac haik ford (515 i-35e, desoto, tx 75115, (972) 223-8050) where it was diagnosed that an update needed to be performed. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 98,264.

I am the third owner of this vehicle. we purchased vehicle with around 114,000 miles. within a week and a half, the engine started knocking while driving/engine running. upon further review, the engine needed replaced. due to the fact we do not know previous owner(s), unsure if it was a maintenance issue or a manufacturer issues. mechanic could not be definitive.

On at least 6 occasions, truck misfires and shakes violently when under load or attempting to accelerate. pull off road or let off of accelerator and engine resumes normal operation. happened once pulling empty trailer, happened 4 times merging onto interstate. happened multiple times passing / accelerating on interstate. frightening and dangerous when truck shakes violently on interstate. roads were wet or rainy conditions in last 5 incidents. 2012 f150 fx4 with only 87000 miles. no accidents. truck maintained and in excellent condition.

While driving at 60mph the transmission shifted into first without warning, causing a sudden loss of control of the vehicle almost causing multiple accidents as i was in the middle of rush hour traffic. the sudden down shift over spun the motor, resulting in a lower engine knock which a certified ford technician believes is the result of a bearing failure. even though the technician performed a cylinder leakage test in which no indication of valve interference was identified, the ford engineer he was dealing with said he had seen this issue before! this is the same recall issue that has caused multiple accidents! there are dozens of blog posts where this issue has caused, at the very least, multiple trips to the dealerships and in rare cases (not including mine), engine failure. i have calculated the engines rpm's using the formula: axle ratio x vehicle speed x transmission ratio x 336.13) / tire diameter = engine speed. at the time of the incident, the engine's rpm's were at an estimated 9,074 rpm's [(3.55 x 60mph x 4.17 x 336.13)/32.9]. the tachometer only goes to 7,000 rpm's! there are two recalls (19n01 and 19s07) that can cause intermittent shifting into first. the day before the incident, i went to the local ford dealership and was told they couldn't get me in for recall fixes because they needed to "take care of their paying customers first." i have talked with four different ford customer service representatives, the answer has been the same; "there is nothing ford motor company can do for you at this time." i feel ford has been very neglectful in taking responsibility of this issue, not only for myself but the countless other people that have had similar problems.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. the contact received a recall notice for nhtsa campaign number: 19v075000 (power train). the vehicle was taken to william mizell ford (located at 330 us-25, waynesboro, ga 30830, (706) 554-2114) where the recall repair was performed. as soon as the contact left the dealer, the transmission started to jump when downshifting, and the engine stalled without warning. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer and test driven, but the failure could not be duplicated. the contact stated that he was not aware of the diagnostic testing, but was informed that he would need to drive the vehicle for a while for it to drive normally. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 91,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. the contact stated that the check engine warning light illuminated. the vehicle was serviced under an unknown nhtsa campaign at janell ford of hanover (2000 washington st, hanover, ma 02339 (781) 982-4500) and also diagnosed that the vehicle needed a new vacuum pump installed. the vehicle was repaired 3 years ago, however, the remedy failed to repair the vehicle. the contact mentioned that the check engine warning light remained illuminated after the recall repair. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 74,000. *bf *jb

I was driving on sr 71 north of columbus ohio in the rain when i changed lanes and tried to accelerate but the engine just started shaking and my engine light started flashing. the truck would not accelerate and started to slow down. i managed to get out of traffic and got off the highway. after sitting a few minutes i tried to get back on the highway. when i tried to accelerate the truck started shaking and would not accelerate. after a 3rd attempt the truck finally got up to speed and i made it home. my engine light is still on. i began to read forums on the ford f150 fx4 and discovered many many people are having this problem with moisture and the intercooler system.. i could've died today. this needs to be made right by ford motor company. Engine kills won't start due to fuse #27 blown

Truck currently has a recall on it due to it going into first gear unexpectedly. took truck to closest dealership two weeks ago and had the recall service completed. was told to expect my check engine light to be on for three or four days. when it stayed on a week i called them back to discuss the light still being on. rescheduled a follow up appointment for april 12. on april 5 and april 7 the truck had the same problem that the recall was supposed to fix. going approx 50mph when the truck went into first gear with wheel hop and some fish tailing. when this problem occurs the instrument panel will basically go to all zero's and it takes the truck being turned off for the computer to reset and allow truck to drive normally. just wanted to document here since truck goes back to dealership tomorrow.

Driving vehicle at approx 65mph, engine lost power, engine wrench light, illuminated, oil pressure light illuminated, engine shifted to 'limp mode'. no acceleration. pulled over to the side of the highway. waited 2 minutes and restarted the engine. was able to get home. took to certified ford dealership for repair. issue occurred twice more while driving to the dealership for repair. needed to replace the throttle body.

I was entering the interstate system by way of "on ramp". went to accelerate to highway speed (65 mph) and my truck began to shutter and loose power. i had to stay on the shoulder of the road to avoid getting hit by a semi truck. it eventually began to run normal.

2012 ford king ranch 3.5 ecoboost f150 suddenly down shifts during acceleration. it is labored when accelerating, it gets to the 6th gear then suddenly down shifts.this happens when trying to merge on to the highway and also when coming from a complete stop after sitting at a light, then trying to accelerate. it has happened on the highway at 70mph trying to accelerate to 75 mph too. it seems like it loses power.

There is a tick/knocking noise coming from underneath my engine it sounds like. i just bought this from a dealer about a week ago and i'm very frustrated right now because i am working hard to make payments on this truck and now i probably have to replace the engine??? it has 123,000 miles

When starting truck when hasn't been driven for several hours engine makes a loud growling noise for about 5 seconds before sounding normal. it had done it occasionally before 02/2019 but now does it daily. some research on other forums that it is the tensioner on the timing belt. truck with this low mileage should not be having these issues. any input?

These trucks have now had 3 different tsb's on them for cam phasers and the timing chain stretching. when is there going to be a recall? tsb's i am referring to are: tsb 16-0027, tsb 15-0131, and tsb 14-0194. this is completely out of hand. the fix does actually fix the problem with the improved parts, but these vehicles have failed and ford is either replacing the engine or actually doing the work in the tsb. if a customer is out of warranty, they must pay for the work. this is not what ford is suppose to be about and is a disservice to their loyal customer base. i have a 2012 f-150 3.5l ecoboost and i will never buy a ford again unless they address this issue. it is a similar issue to the 3v 5.4l with phasers and the timing chain, which killed my 2004 f-150, so i have been effected by these issues twice now, directly.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. while driving 50 mph, the vehicle decelerated, the rpms seized, and the rear wheels slid. in addition, the check engine indicator illuminated. the contact stopped the vehicle and waited. upon being restarted, the vehicle performed normally. the vehicle was taken to l.b. smith ford lincoln (1100 market st, lemoyne, pa 17043, (717) 761-6700) where it was diagnosed that a valve and solenoid body needed to be installed. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and did not assist. the failure mileage was 55,995. *tt

While driving at about 45 mph heading to town on a main access road. i lost all power, accleration, but could still steer to a stop. not the battery it reads 12.3 and have power to my main fuse boxes, dome lights, but nothing on the dash and will not start. i hooked up an obdm and it only shows cylinder 5 misfire which i have also changed the plugs coil packs and also still has not yet fixed the problem.

Turbos. while in motion with acceleration the turbo chirps like a bird.

I bought it with @ 10,000 miles on the odometer. i have had nothing but [xxx] with it from day one. first off i put two new front rotors and brake pads all the way around and both idler pulleys were squealing so i replaced them . then at @ 19,000 miles i had to replace both cvj half shafts . now at 45,000 miles they are both shot again the cvj half shafts are . on the first of january this year i was driving down the road and the vehicle was running good suddenly it began to cut out and the power fell off on its face. i purchased an obd11 code reader to try and diagnose the problem. it tells me that random misfire detected and that cylinders 5 6 7 8 are misfiring . let me just say that 4 months later after going thru everything from the plugs wires injectors and replacing the fuel pump module assembly it is still not running and i'm at my end of trying to get the peice of $*** running. there is no way in [xxx] at 45,000 miles on the vehicle that i should be having all the [xxx] with the vehicle. i live in new mexico and we do have a lemon law here. i am beyond the shadow of a doubt sure that this truck is a [xxx] lemon. parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Immediately following an oil change, my truck began making insanely loud grinding noises. i attempted to drive from knoxville to chattanooga and barely made it to cleveland. my truck stalled, started back up and i coasted into a parking lot. it would not go over 50. i then found a massive puddle of oil underneath where i parked. the truck was taken to jiffy lube.

Vehicle backfired and started shuttering upon acceleration...check engine light came on replaced ignition coil 6. 1000 miles later, same situation cylinder 1&2...replaced those coils and replaced spark plugs. shuttering lessoned, still backfired on upon strong acceleration. definitely a safety concern. the backfire does not trigger the engine light to come on...from the research i've done, this seams to be a common problem with the eco boost

Code p0016 timing chain failure. causing car to lose power when accelerating. this happened on expressway when i was turning into a lane to pass a semi in my lane. i had no power to get going in the passing lane and almost got rear ended.also causes truck to jump when fully stopped and foot on break. this is a on going problem.

Engine failure while driving on city street. 85,xxx miles on vehicle. i purchased vehicle new. engine threw a rod. oil spilled all over roadway. research conducted shows this is a common problem with the ecoboost engine due to intercoolers or timing chain issues. had there been another vehicle behind me, this could have resulted in a crash due to vehicle losing power with no warning.

2012 f-150 has an eco boost 3.5 l motor that misfires in damp/wet/rainy/cool weather. motor goes into a misfire mode with no power to drive or accelerate truck. before the mileage warranty was up, truck was taken to ford for their "fix". however, the issue has remained from 2012 to current year, 2018, and without ford fixing this problem will continue for the indefinite future of these motors from ford. cannot trust truck to perform when needed and a safety hazard when driving, towing or accelerating when this occurrs.

While driving vechicle suddeningly lost power, this is the second time this has happened in the last 7700 miles. very dangerous as this has happened in heavey traffic and almost caused an accident. truck has the ecboostengine. ## vin passed ## 2012 ford f150 ##

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. the contact stated that the vehicle lacked engine power when the vehicle was stationary. an independent mechanic inspected the vehicle and found a p0016 error code, which indicated that the timing belt was loose and needed to be replaced. the contact visited the dealer (medford motors, inc, 105 wisconsin ave, medford, wi 54451, (715) 748-3700) and the failure was confirmed. the dealer stated that the repair would cost over $3,000 without a recall available. the manufacturer was notified and confirmed what the dealer stated. the failure mileage was 77,000. *tt consumer stated loss of power.*jb

Vehicle has less than 45000 miles. has erratic loss of power while accelerating. evidence of water in the air intake. research is showing that the ecoboost engine is collecting more water in the intercooler than the engine can consume. problems increases in southern humid states. this is problem caused by faulty engineering in the 3.5l ecoboost engine and could cause accidents due to unpredictable loss in power. loss of power is felt while driving on city and highway driving.

My timing chain on my f1 50 was stretched and i paid over $8000 to have it fixed and here it is not even a year later and it is stretched again. with all of the supposedly new and updated parts ford obviously doesn't care about what vehicles we buy because they clearly don't want us to buy theirs since i don't want to fix this problem the right way!

My 2012 ford f-150 is having serious safety issues that are addressed in for tsb's and safety recalls. upon contacting ford motor company, i was informed that my vehicle did not have the specific vin number that matched with their cases. my vehicle fits the recall descriptions with make, model, year, and even manufacturing location and has the exact issues that these recalls are about. the first recall is ford recall 16s19 : unexpected transmission downshift this will cause my vehicle to randomly downshift multiple gears. when it shifts down it also causes the rear tires are lock up and i have lost control momentarily trying to drive at highway speeds. this also causes wear and tear on the drivetrain. shifting the motor from 5th gear to 1st immediately sends the motor into a dangerous rpm range causing damage. the second recall is ford tsb 13-6-8: this causes me to lose all indication on my gauges except for rpm' s. i lose indication on my current speed randomly and also on all of my critical engine temperatures and pressures. this also locks the transmission into 5th gear, making it difficult to slow down properly and accelerate from a stop or slow speed. these two issues combine makes the vehicle a danger to drive. i do not feel safe anymore taking this vehicle anywhere and cannot trust it. i have contacted ford motor company both locally and at its headquarters. their reply is that they have to fix it. i was told to contact the nhtsa for further help from a friend who encountered similar issues with ford motor company. thank you for your help.

My 2012 ford f150 xlt supercrew ecoboost has about 85000 miles and abruptly went from about 30-40mph to about 0mph a few times now while driving. once time was very scary on a congested road. after this happened, its like my transmission misfires and misses gears all of the time. there is now a vacuum noise also coming out if the engine and it doesn't run right. i brought it to ford and they told me that i probably wasn't changing the oil properly (i had changed my oil every 3000-5000 miles regularly.), but now they said i messed up the timing chain and phasers and they had to be changed for a price of about 4000 dollars. i have owned other fords not ecoboosts and they all ran fine. i started doing some research and i am sure this is an engineering flaw on the part of ford. i actually read that the nhtsa did research on this topic. there are tons of forums that have the information on them and believe that ford should do the right thing and do a recall or fix the problem. i know its a big problem. i don't think it is fair to the american consumer to have to shell out that kind of money on a bad design flaw on apart of ford that almost got me into an accident bad one time and when my kids and i have to go to an erupt stop. i don't tow anything and drive the truck like a car. this shouldn't be happening.

We have a ford f-150 and it is losing power as you travel down the road. we have to pull over and turn the truck off and restart it. we have had it in the shop at least twice with no success in finding the problem. we have had sensors replaced and the intercooler drained twice. this is dangerous because as your traveling it will loose power and it's hard to get off the road sometimes and could cause an accident. we don't know what to do at this point.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. while driving approximately 60 mph, the vehicle misfired and stalled. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the technician replaced the spark plugs and the coils. but the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to another independent mechanic who was unable to diagnose the failure. the technician called woodhouse ford at 402-574-2759 (located at 3633 n 72nd st, omaha, ne 68134), but the dealer was unable to provide any assistance. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 154,000.

Vacuum pump runs excessively and is noisy. this is already a known condition to fomoco. they advise my vehicle is not covered under covered u der customer satisfaction extended service bulletin. https://ford.oemdtc.com/1760/15n05-electric-vacuum-pump-extended-coverage-2011-2012-ford-f-150 ford reference # cas-24279039-d5h0k6

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. while driving 70 mph, the vehicle stalled and lost electrical power without warning. the contact was able to restart the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the timing chain was stretched and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. koons ford (6970 security blvd, baltimore, md 21244, (410) 298-3800) was contacted for a second opinion on the original diagnostic results. the manufacturer was also notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 65,000.

The timing chain in the engine gets prematurely stretched and requires replacement so timing chain failure does not occur. i had the chain replaced in jan 2017 completely and the issue was supposed to be completely resolved. 1 year later the same issue is back and the chain needs to be replaced again. it is a loud rattling noise that occurs on start up and can cause complete engine failure. several hundreds of complaints can be found about this well known issue. ford refuses to acknowledge it. the early model 3.5l ecoboost engines are causing the stretching of the timing chain and a recall needs to be placed on them to ensure customer safety

Cold starts create rattle in engine area. ford tsb 16-0027 covers this problem but the dealer, dick witham ford in waterloo, iowa continues to play games with covering this issue. truck has been in several times for other issues, some covered, and i asked if there were bulletins about lag in acceleration or other things that may cause this. they told me multiple times, no, just a computer reprogram that i already had completed. now my truck is making noise and by all reports on the web, it's going to get worse. ford knew about this going back to august 19, 2015 (see tsb 15-0131) yet never told me or looked at my truck to see if that was causing my issue. now with my truck just over 5 year old but still well under the warranty for miles, it may not be covered. however, the new tsb clearly states dealer coding 6c525 and condition code 42, it is under warranty via the emissions. this is my 5th new ford truck over the years, i will not own another. with the price we pay for brand new cars and trucks the manufacturer must be held to what they promise the consumer. this is a timing chain stretch issue caused by poor design and the variable camshaft timing (vct) units leaking causing timing chain damage. ford's fault, not mine.

The entire time i have owned this vehicle it would occasionally have the shuttering and power loss effect till it went 5000 passed my extended warranty and then engine imploded. so they just blow it off as a common issue but now they want me to pay 10000 for a new engine for a problem they always knew about.

We purchased our f-150 on or about 1/2/2018 with no known problems, the next day it didn't want to start and several engine codes showed up. the dealership said they cleared, reset program and we shouldn't have any more issues, but said their is a recall on engine coolant and they ordered part. the next day the codes appeared and we brought it back to the dealership for the same problem and they said it was normal for the truck to learn our driving habits and the codes would disappear. we left and the next day the truck didn't want to start again and we are currently driving it to the dealership for the same issues. 1/9/2018

Water pump failure at mere 76,000 miles. vehicle was maintained per factory manual. location, southern california non-desert. large puddle of coolant after 20 mile drive one day. no other warning signs. dealership repair shop diagnosis says hose leaks and failed water pump.

My truck does two things, both with the transmission. 1rst this is random and happens at any unsuspecting time and at all speeds. the truck goes into limp mode (killing all power) starts to clunk in and out of gears to the point it locked up the tires once going 55 mph for a second as this is happening my mph needle goes to 0, also the wrench light comes on. the other problem is random as well. the truck displays the airbag light while driving along, the transmission will get stuck in third and won't shift, some times it gets stuck in first and never make it up to 6th gear it will eventually shift through the gears as this is happening the miles, avg fuel display goes to all blanks. both very unsafe and very scary, as i don't know when it will happen. i will not put my daughter in the vehicle until i feel it's save to do so.
