Problems with 2010 Toyota Prius SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC

On average, the 2010 Toyota Prius starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC and its various aspects after 4 167 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC problems on 2010 Toyota Prius

While driving with cruise control engaged and a situation occurs that requires braking; normal brake pedal pressure does nothing. i have to hit the brakes extra hard which significantly slows reaction time. this problem occurs randomly. when i took the car to the dealer i could not get the problem to repeat. *tr

A couple of times when i have applied pressure to the brakes on my 2010 prius, the car has accelerated momentarily instead of braking. *tr

On rough roads and terrain, the 2010 prius that i recently bought consistently displays defective behavior. when i am trying to brake, and during braking hit a bump (always during a slow brake), the car actually speeds up. this has resulted in my changing my driving habits to be further away from cars in front of me, especially on bumpy roads. however, i am very concerned that at some point i won't be able to stop the vehicle properly when expecting the car to continue a slow brake, and instead it hits a bump and does not brake. i don't believe toyota is addressing the defect at this time from reports i have read. my mother (without going into any detail after having read reports) asked if i had experienced any issues with my prius and i told her of this exact issue prior to being aware of media coverage. *tr

I have a 2010 toyota prius and i noticed a problem with the breaks. when i am slowing down, with my foot on the breaks, and hit an uneven road, the car loses the breaks and surges forward. *cn

2010 prius accelerates while braking and surges in acceleration from a stop while accelerating slowly. many but not all occasions were while going over bumps and/or wet road. this has happened several times since owning the car. toyota cannot duplicate the problem in the testing and denies that it is real. it has been brought into toyota for repairs but the problem persists. the car is now parked and we will not drive it as it is not safe. we filed a lemon law claim (ca) and toyota has denied the claim with a form type letter. *tr

My car (2010 toyota prius) briefly accelerates when i hit a small bump. it feels like it is in the abs system. i called my dealer shortly after i purchased the car and they said they have had no complaints of this nature. i went on a prius chat forum and there were many with the same complaint. *tr

My car momentarily lunges forward when i go thru a pothole while braking. *tr

Since purchase in october 2009, i have experienced occasional problems with the brakes on my 2010 toyota prius. sporadically, when i apply the brakes to slow down going down a slight incline or stopping at lights or intersection, i feel a momentary lag before the brakes actually function. the lag is noticeable and similar to feeling airborne or slipping causing me to frantically push down harder on the brake pedal than usual. this has recurred perhaps 10 different times i also had one incident when the brake seemed to lock when the gear was in reverse and i was beginning to back out of a parking space. please note the date of incident and mph is only an estimate. *cn

i own a 2010 toyota prius ii. i have experienced a feeling that, while braking hitting a bump or pothole, the brakes completely release for about 1 second. this can be quite alarming if another vehicle is in front of you or worse, pedestrians are crossing in your path. i've been an employee of general motors for 25 years and worked in a department that made anti lock brakes for 8 of those years. this is not a normal function of that feature by any manufacturer. otherwise my prius is a technological tour de force except some dash buzzing and rattling. *tr

2010 prius. i have the braking problem exactly as it's described in your report, "momentary loss of braking capability while traveling over an uneven road surface, pothole or bump". this seems to occur about every 50 miles of city driving, but it's totally unpredictable. when it happens, i have to depress the brake pedal about two more inches to regain the lost braking. i indicated this on toyota's new owner survey but never heard from the company. please add this to the list of complaints. *tr

I drive a 2010 toyota prius. i have found on multiple times (5-10), while braking, the car seems to accelerate for a brief period of time (1 second) then begin to brake. this only happens on bumpy roads. it has happened ever since i purchased the vehicle in oct 2009. *tr

My 2010 prius has trouble braking when i'm traveling at slow speeds over uneven or slippery surfaces. it's as if the brakes lose traction/slip. i first reported this problem to toyota in october 2009. i sent emails and placed phone calls and brought it to the dealership repeatedly. they say they were unable to replicate the problem and can't fix it till they replicate it. they have no solutions for me. i called toyota today and they said they did not refer my complaint to nhtsa...even though i filed it with toyota months ago. they say its not their responsibility to share my complaint with the government. *tr

My 2010 toyota prius slips when the brakes are applied over manholes, potholes, and uneven surfaces (differences in pavement, etc), at which time i have no control over the vehicle. this occurs several times a week, and at low speeds - since i'm applying the brakes, the speeds have been 30 mph or less. i took the car in for a test drive 2/4/10, however, no potholes were available during the test drive, and the diagnostic check via computer indicated no error messages have occurred within the system. i was told there were no problems, and that the brakes are working correctly. *tr

On my way to work there is a rough patch of pavement where i have to slow down before a turn and a stop. if i am applying the brakes when i hit it, the car will surge forward, feeling out of control like on ice, until the car is on smooth pavement again. fortunately there wasn't a vehicle in front of me the first time it happened, and from then on, i slow down well before the rough patch, and don't apply my brakes on the patch, or similar patches. *tr

I purchased 2010 prius 3rd generation last august and my wife and me experienced brake problem several times. when i passed bumpy road at low speed i felt lost braking (surged forward) for a second. my wife also experienced the same problem two weeks ago when it rained in los angeles. i reported it to the dealer last october but they said there is no problem in my car. so i insisted the inspection so the dealer arranged to show my prius to the expert from toyota center and i had to wait it 2 months. last month (early january) it was inspected by the expert from toyota center at the dealership but i heard the simple answer from the dealer that the technician found no problem. since the inspection my wife experienced the same problem again. when she was driving with our 1 year old baby passing on the pothole in the neighborhood. *tr

2010 toyota prius. there is a problem with the brakes when i am on a bumpy road and want to come to a complete stop. the problem doesn't seem to happen when slowing over a bumpy road, only when coming to a complete stop. the car almost seems to skid a bit and i definitely do not feel as if i have control of the car when this happens. while it's only a split second, it's not a very comfortable split second. thankfully i have not been in this situation with another car in front of me. *tr

When applying the brakes before going over a pothole i noticed that my 2010 prius appeared to speed up for a split second rather than slow down. this happened when i went over the pothole. i also noted the same sensation when braking behind cars at a stop light. if i hit a bump the car seems to slightly accelerate rather than decelerate. additionally when driving slowly down a icy hill and applying the brakes, there was a delay in any braking. when applying the brakes harder the car did decelerate eventually. this has happened a number of times, but is hard to replicate on demand. *tr

While applying the brakes to slow down to go around a curve that also goes downhill, my 2010 toyota prius seems to speed up for a few seconds in the midst of the turn. i can't tell if this is the braking system failing or the accelerator kicking in. it's not centrifugal force, because there is a clear surge forward. this happens pretty regularly, as this is a maneuver that i make regularly on my way home. i put in an arbitrary date below, because it has happened many times. i notice this happening at other times too, but i don't have a consistent record of when and where it happens. *cn

The brakes on my 2010 toyota prius at times do not engage immediately. it may be necessary at those times to depress the brake pedal by 1/3rd before braking begins. there is a similar delay when braking is used to turn off cruise control. neither of these have caused an accident, but in both cases there is some risk.

I purchased a 2010 prius in august 2009. it shows no evidence of an anti-lock braking system. i reported this to the taylor toyota of alexandria in october who told me that they had not heard of the problem and they did nothing. additionally, the avid factory tires on the car are not effective on wet pavement; they skid. again, i reported this to the dealer and again they told me they had not heard of a problem but referred me to their parts department to buy new tires. finally, when i engage cruise control, the car surges forward in speed until i depress the brake. i stopped using the cruise control. *tr

Experience sudden loss braking power when my prius hit a pothole while applying the brake pedal. the car regain braking power after short period of time. this issue happened multiple times. i'm concern my car may hit other vehicle or pedestrian in the future if i would not stop the car properly. *tr

My prius 2010 3rd generation model's brakes seem to go out when braking over uneven road. this has happened more than 10 times starting from the first week i got the car. especially going over potholes, the car lurches forward several feet. i called the dealer service department and they said there was nothing that could be done to remedy the brakes. i was told to call back if there was a re-call issued. *cn

2010 toyota prius. i purchased a 2010 toyota prius series v in july 2010 ... i have notice that when going over a "pothole" or very rough pavement that the vehicle does somewhat speed up and have a momentary loss of braking capability. stepping on the brake seems to alleviate the situation. seems to intermittent and did not happen on any specific date or cause an accident . *tr

Brake failure when driving at slow speeds over bumpy surface. 2010 toyota prius. *tr

We had picked up our brand new toyota prius 2010 on sep 24th 2009. a week later, on oct 1, i was driving in to my brother in law's driveway (maybe at 5mph) when i felt that the brake pedal did not engage. i crashed into their garage door. since, this was a metal door, we thought we could dent it back in and repaint it. therefore, it was not reported to insurance. since then, i have felt a couple more times that the brake did not engage either quickly enough or hard enough. i am not a rash driver. i have not had a traffic violation in about 8 years or so. i am very worried out this. we have 2 children that are in the car a lot with me. please advise. *tr

I bought my new 2010 prius june 6th 2009. since about oct 2009, i have noticed when i am braking and go over a pothole in the road, the car seems to speed up. there is a pothole by my house so i can test this frequently. it happens when i go about 30 mps (as i'm slowing down due to the stop light on the corner). i took my 2010 prius into the dealership on dec 28th and they were very unhelpful and rude. they told me to remove my floor mats even though what my issue was had nothing to do with floor mats or the gas pedal. what can i do to help encourage them to fix this issue as i find it unsafe to drive my car?? i have almost rear ended the car in front of me twice. it's very concerning. *tr

Twice my 2010 prius had a delay when applying the brakes. momentarily i thought i had a braking failure. *tr

On numerous occasions the car seems to surge when slowing down to stop at an oncoming intersection, stop light, or stop sign. this only occurs if the car comes to a pot hole or "washboard" surface in the road while in the process of normal braking. i don't believe the traction control is responsible because the traction light does not come on when this happens. it also does not seem to have anything to do with the abs because the car seems to surge for about a second due to the tire or tires loosing traction for a split second. i have duplicated this event multiple times in the same area and have learned to anticipate it when driving this route. however, when it happens unexpectedly, it certainly gets your attention. *tr

My 2010 prius has issues with braking under certain conditions. it seems to happen mostly when i am braking on bumpy roads or going over railroad tracks. when this happens, it literally feels like the car is surging forward with enough force to actually make me feel like it is accelerating. i thought it was just me but, then, my wife had the same issue just the other day. in addition to the bumpy road, it was icy and it caused her to slide through an intersection. today, i just heard about this issue from a co-worker so, i have decided to add mine to the list. *tr

It appears that the car either does not respond or even accelarates when braking on uneven surface. it happened to me more than 10 times, i have the car for 4.5 months.

Own a 2010 prius. have experience intermittent brake issues. the brakes seem to not function properly when they applied over uneven surfaces. the car feels like it is "sliding" or "hydroplaning" for a brief moment, then the brakes "catch" again. i was involved in an accident on september 24, 2009 and never thought about the issue with the brakes. *tr

Toyota prius 2010. while driving approx 20 mph over a pothole while applying the brakes, i felt what seemed like the brake slip and release temporarily. although it did not cause an accident, it could have had there been a car closer on the other side of the pothole. *tr

2010 toyota prius accelerates for a second when i hit the brakes when i am passing over potholes or ice. it has happened wellover 10 times. *tr

I purchased a 2010 toyota prius in september of 2009. three times i have experienced issues with sudden acceleration after braking on a rough surface. two were in the same area where i was slowing to turn into a business and while braking i hit several small pot holes in the road. as soon as i hit the potholes i had a sudden brief acceleration where my brakes did not seem to work. in a short time the brakes seem to take hold. since there has been the recall and issues with accelerating with the cruise control my car has been parked. i have an appointment to have the vehicle looked at on thursday, but i have not received a recall notice. *tr

I bought my 2010 prius in july 2009. over the course of the first 3-4 months, there were 3 or 4 instances when i felt momentarily that i had no braking control, all while traveling at low speed over bumpy terrain., and at least twice while in reverse. i didn't identify it as being a real problem until the braking problem surfaced. i am eager to have my car fixed, so that there isn't a crash in the future. *tr

At low speed (less than 15 mph) on dry, smooth pavement, the brakes on my 2010 prius occasionally fail to engage for approximately 2 seconds. this has occurred less than once a month since august 2009, or approximately 4 times. *cn

Regenerative braking disengages for a second or two before mechanical braking takes over causing car to lurch forward/accelerate when braking on uneven road surfaces. this effect was noticed twice at speeds less than 15 mph when front tires hit ruts in road attempting to brake at stop lights or when going around a corner. i try to drive close to the right curb on the even road surface to avoid breaking when pot holes/ruts are present in my lane where other cars typically drive. *tr

Sporadic problems with the brakes on our 2010 toyota prius. we have discussed this several times on chat boards over the past five months. it happens perhaps once a month. the brakes lock when the car is in reverse. backing out of the garage, you can just barely touch the brakes and it's as though you had slammed the full force of your foot on the brakes. literally can cause whiplash even at the slow speed of backing out. when this problem occurs it will occur over and over as long as you are in reverse. each time when you slightly depress the brakes, the car slams to a complete stop. what we have found is that the only way to correct it, has been to turn off the car completely and re-start the car. it may just be coincidence, but typically the brakes return to completely normal operations in reverse after the ignition has been shut off and the vehicle engine restarted. the greatest oddity is that it appears that the brakes do not respond in the same degree as the brakes are depressed. it's as though the brakes when depressed even slightly message the car to exert full braking action. it's the only car we've ever owned where the braking power seems not to be dependent on the degree with which we press the brakes. again, this doesn't happen every time we have the car in reverse, but typically between once a month and every six weeks. *tr

Problem is with my 2010 toyota prius, brakes seem to fail and the vehicle will actually lurch forward when braking on a bumpy or icy or snowy conditions. date given below is approx to when i bought the vehicle and is a constant problem and ongoing. it is difficult to reproduce though, and you never know when it is going to happen. *tr

The brakes on my prius have failed numerous times over 7 months in both city and rural driving conditions. when brake failure occurs, the prius brakes not only disengage (fail) but the car seems to lunge forward. it's as if i am braking with my foot on the gas pedal and then let up on the brake while the gas pedal is still depressed. it is not a safe vehicle. i have great concern for my safety and the safety of my family and others, particularly pedestrian safety at intersections.

I have a 2010 prius, which i purchased in august 2009. i noticed when i apply the brakes if i am at a pothole,or uneven road, there is a "slight" pause before the brakes engage and stop the car. this has occurred at least 50 times since i purchased the car. *tr

The issue with the brakes on the 2010 prius has occurred several times on our prius, which was purchased in august of 2009. coming downhill and going over a speed bump there is a sudden slight acceleration when we apply the brakes. fortunately, no accident has occurred. *tr

2010 toyota prius purchased july 2009 i've had the braking problem that's been described in the news recently on a number of occasions. when i first reported it to toyota during my first oil change at the dealership, they told me "that it was normal". -- not! *tr

I stepped on my brake and my car kept accelerating. *tr

Vehicle occasionally jumps ahead during braking. most likely to happen when stopping on a downhill grade at moderate speed (under 35 mph). brakes engage again after brief acceleration and car so far has come safely to a stop. date below is approximate date of first occurrence. *tr

Since i purchased my 2010 prius in august 2009 i have felt the car had braking issues, i.e. brakes seem to not engage momentarily when brakes depressed as well as brakes seem to go in and out when i initially start up the car. i thought it was just the new car which i have not gotten used to and that it needs to be broken in. i have not driven the car since late december due to fear of problems in the rain. i have had to purchase another car early january in the mean time. *tw

Brakes on 2010 toyota prius do not work properly when backing up. dealer checked brakes and could not find a problem. *tr

So this is regarding the 2010 prius i recently purchased. i bought the car in august of 2009. the only problem i have is with the brakes. sometimes when i hit a bump or pothole in the road, and i'm stepping on the brakes, i feel a sudden acceleration even though i do not step on the gas pedal. if i keep my foot on the pedal i will stop eventually, but the sudden onset of acceleration is quite scary. this happens from time to time and i can never predict it. *tr

When carefully braking my 2010 toyota prius at low speeds (40 mph and lower), a small dip or bump in the road will cause the car to release the brakes and the effect is a sudden acceleration or release of the braking system which lasts approximately 1 second. this failure in the vehicle is seemingly unrelated to a mechanical issue and feels more like an electrical issue, since there is no stiff pedal or obstruction near the pedal. the failure occurs on a semi-regular basis. i took the car into the toyota dealership where i bought my vehicle, suburban toyota located in troy, michigan, and reported the problem, approximately 4 months from the time i bought the car (june 2009). the mechanics kept the vehicle over night. the dealer then reported that they did experience the problem when testing the vehicle and said it was related to the anti-lock braking system and that the car was designed to move around an object rather than heavy braking. they did nothing to fix the car. the problem persists and i have heard similar complaints of unintended acceleration, both when braking and coasting. i am concerned i will at some point hit a car that is too close in front of me. *tr

With my 2010 prius (purchased late aug 2009), it has exactly the same problem others have described. while going downhill, with the brakes applied, hitting potholes or bumpy road surface causes the car to accelerate. it happens "every so often". it's quite obvious when it happens and clearly a safety hazard. i have taken it into the dealer but the problem is not reproducible every time and they have no official word from toyota on it. *tr
