The brakes on my 2010 prius did not engage two times while driving in snowy conditions this winter. i almost crashed into a car both times.
Car did not brake properly and slightly surged forward on many occasions when i drove over a manhole cover and speed bumps at lower speeds. in one occasion, i rear ended a car and cracked my license plate frame but since there was no further damage on any of the cars involved, we agreed to drive away. *tr
From august 1st of 2009, i had been driving a 2010 prius. it is a great vehicle for economy but there is a problem with brakes. when brakes are applied and if there is a bump, the vehicle jumps forward or accelerates and the stopping distance increases. usually a safe distance behind a vehicle is when the tail pipe of the vehicle in front of you is visible. with the prius, to be safe, i stop at least ten feet behind a vehicle because if there is a bump, the vehicle will jump forward. *tr
2010 toyota prius - while braking car has occasionally lunged forward - seemingly when hitting an uneven section of road. feels as if car suddenly hit a patch of ice -none present of course. more noticeable when turning. this has happened approximately 6 different times. *tr
Upon braking approaching a stoplight, my 2010 toyota prius hit a pothole and suddenly jerked forward, then returned to slowing. i kept my foot on the brake and the car stopped normally. *tr
After applying brakes at a bumpy intersection the car s brakes were non functioning and it traveled into the intersection. this has happened on three separate occasions. *tr
Our 2010 toyota prius is experiencing periodic, temporary brake failure/unintended acceleration. my wife is the primary driver and states that on 4-5 occasions over the past 9 months, when braking over uneven surfaces at speeds of 10-30 mph, there can be a temporary period of unintended acceleration lasting 1-2 seconds. *cn
When applying the brakes on a bumpy road the car speeds up. *tr
At 10mph on the freeway, my 2010 prius hesitated to brake properly and as a result my left fender made contact with the vehicle in front of me. as result, my insurance increased, i had to pay $500 deductible to repair my bumper. the back brakes have squeaked going in reverse since purchase in november 2009. *tr
I own a toyota prius 2010 and i live in a snowy city. i have experienced "unusual" problems with brakes three times in month of january. first time i was taking my two children to school and as i was approaching stop sign, i slowed down as usual and applied brake. when i was almost at the stop sign, i realized that car wasn't stopping, so i panicked and pressed brake pedal hard and then i noticed the abs started to work and i passed the stop sign about three meters, road was covered with snow. second time i was going to work on a wet road and not icy. i was approaching a traffic light and as i slowed down i also changed lane and applied brake. before the traffic light i noticed that as if i was not braking, so i pressed hard on the brakes and it stopped. third time i dropped my children to school and started to go to work and i experienced similar problem with brakes, wet road and not icy, but this time i panicked because of some cars on the road, i pressed hard on the brake and it stopped in front of the stop sign and i had to back up. so i called my husband at his work as i was very nervous about this situation. he said it is probably because of the weather and may be because i am very careful about the new car. so he said that he would test drive the car to see if there is any problem. he drove the car to work for two weeks, 700 miles, and he told me that he had only once "unusual" problem with brakes similar to what i had. two days ago i heard about prius brake problems and i took my car to the dealer. dealer said that inspection has found no problem. and here i am driving this car again. *tr
I bought at 2010 prius on new year's eve, and since then, on several occasions (probably about 7-8 times) when hitting a pothole, the car feels like it lunges forward, or almost accelerates. maybe it's just that the brake goes out completely, but it's always when braking for a pothole or dip that my car goes lunging forward. luckily no accidents or anything have resulted as of yet, but it concerns me. i've been too busy to mention it to the dealer yet, although i did mention it briefly to my salesperson when he did a follow-up call to see how i was doing with the new car. i've made an appt. at my local dealer for monday to have it looked at, but given the news this morning, i felt i should report it because i've definitely been experiencing what's being reported. *tr
I have a 2010 prius i purchased in october of 2009. two different times i was driving on ice and was sliding while applying the brakes. while braking the brakes completely stopped working for a second or two, then began working again. the second time it happened i almost crashed into cars at an intersection because i could not stop at the intersection. both times this happened i was going at a very slow rate of speed because of the road conditions. my husband had thought i was just crazy or not understanding abs but this is not the feeling of abs. i could feel the abs brakes and then a moment of nothing, then brakes again. *tr
I have on at least 4 occasions experienced the braking issue (that is being investigated) on my 2010 prius. it happens when i go over railroad tracks, or hit a pothole. please add my complaint to the others that report similar problems.
I currently own a 2010 toyota prius and over the past few month i've noticed a momentary loss in my braking when turning corners or coming to a stop. i'm alittle concern that this might be a degenerative issue that may cause a serious accident at high speeds. *tr
I have a 2010 toyota prius purchased at a dealer in boston in july 2010. on half a dozen occasions while travel at speeds < 30 mph and going over either a bump, ice patch or metal on road (i.e., sewer), when applying brake my car has sped forward for a few splits seconds. it is a sensation of a momentary loss of control. *tr
Brake failure on my 2010 prius; three times on snowy/icy roads in jan. 2010. causing me to run two stop signs and narrowly avoiding a collision with a stopped vehicle. *tr
I purchased a 2010 toyota prius in october 2009. i had two incidences with the brakes that were similar to what has been reported in the papers. the first was within the first six weeks of owning the car. i was slowing down to enter a gas station and the car accelerated. i had been applying the brakes already, but the acceleration took me by surprise. i applies the brakes more forcefully and the car slowed. the second time i was on my way to the dealer for a get to know you with the maintenance dept. i was descending a hill with the brakes being applied. again the car sped up and i braked more forcefully and it slowed. it was scary. my husband said this happened once when he drove the car, but he did not remember the details. when we told the dealer, they said they were not aware of any issues with the 2010 prius accelerating or braking, but that they would look at the car. of course, this happened three times over three months. they didn't find anything wrong with the car. someone else at the meeting suggesting issues with the programming, but we were just meeting with the head of the repair department. they only know what toyota is telling them. now i see in the paper that toyota corrected the issue in their new prius. so they knew about this and didn't tell us. this is the first and last time i will buy a toyota. *tr
When initially starting the car (prius 2010) to back out of a parking spot and applying the brakes, i have noticed a loss of braking (i have pressed the brake pedal to the floor with no noticeable braking). when the brakes are reapplied, the brakes "grab" and cause sudden, jerky stopping. this has occurred twice. *tr
Prius 2010 purchased 12/26/2009. when i'm braking downhill and hit a pot-hole, i get a big kick from the car. it feels like the abs system engages. it's happened a few times, and is predictable in certain routes. over time, i've adjusted to it and learned to apply the brakes differently. i'm also more careful to avoid the potholes. it's not happening as often now. it's startling, but i'm not sure it's dangerous. *tr
In early january, when backing our 2010 toyota prius out of the garage, the brake pedal became overly-sensitive and began locking the brakes when any pressure at all was applied to the pedal. this went on for about a dozen iterations until the transmission was shifted to drive. at that point the brakes began behaving normally. this has only occurred a single time since purchasing the vehicle in july, 2009. *tr
1. i live in minnesota. after the first big snowstorm when i was braking on snow and ice, there was a very strong burning rubber-like burning smell, and the braking changed. i started sliding through stop signs and into intersections when on icy pavement. i was very concerned and took the car to the dealership on december 12. they reported there was nothing wrong with the car. 2. on january 5, i was on a totally iced over street in park rapids, minnesota. i made a left turn, then was slowing down to make a right turn into a parking spot. i was going very slowly. i depressed the brake, but the car failed to slow down. i kept sliding and hit the cement parking marker, which punctured the front of the car (in the bumper area). 3. nothing has been done, and i am afraid to drive the car. i have contacted my insurance company, who have suggested that i ask toyota to cover the damages. i have filed a complaint with toyota, but am still waiting for a return my call. i will be contacting my dealer today. *tr
I have a 2010 toyota prius that has often quit braking when i was driving on (a) a bumpy dirt road (2 times), (b) bumpy paved road (bumps caused by compacted snow) (2 times) and (c) a large dip in a road near my house (approx.10 times). the lapse in braking is probably less than a second, but scares me every time. before my prius, i have always owned all-wheel drive vehicles, and i just attributed the lack of braking on the fact that i no longer have all wheel drive. but now that i think about it. that shouldn't affect the braking! i can pretty much count on this happening over a bumpy road, or just one big bump, so if someone wants to drive my car and see what it does, that is fine with me. let me know if i can help get this problem fixed. i have not contacted the dealer about this. should i? *tr
I want to complain about the braking problem with my toyota prius 2010 which i purchased in november of 2009. on several occasions, about 4 or 5, the brakes don't work when going over a bump hitting a pothole and the car slides forward. this has happened while slowing down at lights and intersections. *tr
I have a 2010 prius. when i brake over a bumpy surface, i loose braking power for 1-2 seconds. i have experienced this very serious problem at least 10 times. i noticed this problem soon after the purchase and continues. i have brought it back for service at toyota but i was told there was no reported problems and they could not find the problem when they road tested my car. this is documented in the maintenance records. a couple of times when i experienced this problem, i almost hit the car in front of me! there is a defective braking system. *tr
Approaching a four way stop sign in my 2010 prius, i applied the brakes but the car continued for approximately a second before the brakes took effect. there was patchy ice on the road before the stop sign. i went through the intersection, past the stop sign by about 20 feet. i originally thought it was just the abs braking characteristics however now i realize it was an actual delay in the breaking itself. i drove my previous 2004 prius for 108,000 miles without ever having this occur. *tr
I own a 2010 toyota prius. i have experienced some dangerous occurrences while driving. 1) occasional loss of traction (for a second+-). problem has occurred aug, 2009 - present. usually occurs when heading downhill or when driving over a manhole or drainage cover. car feels as if slipping or airborne for a moment.. 2) frequently immediately after starting car, at slow speeds of only 0-5 mph, car is jerky each time brake is applied. problem has occurred aug, 2009 - present. passengers are actually jerked, as if driver was applying brakes too suddenly. even with great attempt to stop smoothly and gradually, it is impossible. brakes grab and jerk. this occurs both in reverse and forward, yet not every time engine is started. it lasts for only a minute or so, but makes maneuvering while parking or entering traffic unsafe, as well as making driver look inept. i cannot figure out if this is a braking or acceleration problem. when calling a toyota dealer (nov, 2009), i was told they had no similar reports of these problems and offered no solution. my concern has increased with the recent recalls when calling a toyota dealer previously, i was told they had no similar reports of these problems. my concern has increased with the recent recalls. *tr
I was driving down a hill that has a slightly uneven surface and was a bit icy and when applying the brake in my prius, my car sped up slightly when it hit the uneven surface and seemingly jumped faster before the brakes kicked in and brought my car to a stop. this has happened twice on different roads, both of the road surfaces being slightly uneven. nothing has been done to correct this problem, when i called toyota they told me that there was nothing they could do.
On december 29, 2009 we purchased a 2010 toyota prius. within a few days we experienced brake problems while backing up and applying the brakes lightly. the prius stopped abruptly many times before we were in a position to move forward. this has happened on a number of times; however, this behavior is intermittent. and on another occasion the car veered to the right while traveling forward and applying the brakes in an emergency situation. *tr
Confirmation of brake issue with prius. car briefly accelerates on rough patches or going over potholes when using brake. no accidents. *tr
Driving over a bump or pothole and my brakes temporarily quit working. 2010 prius. *tr
Toyota-prius hybrid-2010 braking problem. i have experience a braking problem that has not resulted in an accident. the braking problem results only when in a panic stop (when abs is active). i think what is happening is that the brake is releasing for a second while the abs computer is taking over control of the braking. this cause what seems to the drive as a slip. where the drive feels the brake release and a second later the abs kicks in and stops the car. i have felt this brake release three times in the few months i have owned the car and most times when turning right into a driveway. *tr
There are braking issues with my 2010 toyota prius. 1) in multiple instances, perhaps 12 times, when braking in snowy conditions, there is a moment where the brakes appear to be inactive. pressing much harder brings the brakes back on line. i have driven for 40 years, in dozens of cars and never found this. the situation is counter-intuitive, because i do not want to jam on the brakes in slippery conditions for obvious reasons. 2) in 3-4 instances when braking and going over a pothole or larger bump, the same as the above occurs, that is momentary loss of braking. again, pressing harder alleviates the problem. *tr
I own a 2010 prius. when i apply the brake to stop the car, sometimes the brake stops working. if i then quickly take my foot off the brake and reapply, it works again and the car stops. this has occurred on several occasions since december 2009. *tr
1. small patch of snow or bump 2. loss of brakes, 2 times due to snow and 1 time due to a bump, loss of braking for about 5 feet about 20 feet before a stop sign. there is no pulsing (abs) just a loss of braking. when it happens, i push the brakes harder and after about 5 feet at 5 mph, i get sudden strong braking. the snow has only been on the right front tire. this is not just loss of traction because i don't hear the noise associated with that. 3. none, read other similar accounts that the deal is calling normal. *tr
While engaging the brake, brakes seem to release for 1 sec while holding down brake while hitting bump or whenever traction control system is engaged. *tr
Experienced exact same temporary loss of braking after driving over bumps, pot hole as described in your investigation. have experienced this problem repeatedly since first days of ownership. *tr
When i drive on slippery or bumpy roads in my 2010 prius, i experience brake failures at low speeds. it feels as if there is a temporary surge of power and the brake system disengages -- almost as if the anti-lock brake system is improperly engaging. i have experienced this about four times, both in slippery weather and in dry weather (for instance, driving over a manhole cover). so far there have been no accidents, but this seems fortuitous. i am bringing the car into the dealer. *tr
Braking failure on 2010 prius on rough or uneven driving surfaces. no fix has been attempted or made. this is another example of the widely reported problem in the 2010 prius. *tr
My 2010 toyota prius accelerates over potholes and bumps in the road when i'm pressing on the brake. even if i am braking for a few seconds, as soon as i get to the pothole, it pushes forward. this happens to me at least once a day and sometimes multiple times a day. i have only been driving the car for 5 weeks and have noticed this issue since day one. *tr
Around the first of january, 2010, we had turned into the drive of our home in grenada, ms. as the drive curves in front of the house it is bordered by a brick retaining wall. we were going slowly and intended to apply the brake. instead of slowing the 2010 prius speed up and struck the wall. the resulting damage was between $4500 and $5000. i assumed we had mistakenly used the accelerator instead of the brake. i still believe that is exactly what occurred. however, with the issues around the prius, i wanted to report this incident. there was no injury and the car has been repaired with insurance proceeds. i'm happy to provide more information if you like. *tr
When i go over a bump or hit a significant pothole, the anti-lock braking system on my 2010 toyota prius seems to freeze up. i am unable to use the brakes properly and it feels like i do not have control of my car for a couple of seconds. fortunately, i have not had an accident as a result but i am very concerned about this. *tr
I have been driving my 2010 prius for 3 months and have experienced the following issues, when braking, if a pothole or bump in the road is hit, the car seemingly jerks forward/accelerates for a split second and the traction light blinks. even when there are no bumps, there is a lag in the time i depress the brake pedal, and when the brakes activate. the car almost coasts for about 1-2 seconds, which can make the difference in an accident or not. *tr
Sometimes when going in to reverse the brakes grab aggressive resulting in a jerking motion. *tr
Multiple incidents of acceleration while braking when going over bumps. *cn
With our 2010 toyota prius, my wife had an accident where the vehicle slid into a snow bank within 1 block of our home. just prior to this, i noticed that the vehicle's anti-lock brake did not seem to function properly. i used to work for general motors in michigan and know the sound that comes from working anti-lock brakes. the anti-lock brakes used to work earlier in 2009...i had to stop on a wet paint stripe and the anti-locks made the distinctive ratcheting sound. in december 2009, that sound and the loss of braking traction was evident. not until i see that there is news in the media recently about the prius did i think to lodge a complaint. this accident caused me (and my insurer) $1,024 in damage to our front bumper. *tr
Toyota prius 2010. on three occasions on ice and/or snowy roads the brakes failed to stop the car safely. on two occasions the car came down the brick street and into the cross street. fortunately no accident occurred. first time in dec. 2009, twice in jan. 2010. *tr
I own a 2010 prius that i purchased in august, which has between 4 and 5 thousand miles on it. the brakes have been squealing for about a month, intermittently but fairly often (some days are better than others). also, the traction control system light ("slippery" warning) sometimes beeps/flashes even when i am sitting still on dry level pavement, especially if i depress the brakes all the way to the floor. i have not yet experienced any life or property loss as a result and am providing this information on a purely fyi basis as you try to figure out issues with 2010 prius brakes. (the issues as i understand them do not seem to exceed the normal risks of driving, so i don't plan to do anything except mention it at the 5k checkup, unless i hear otherwise in the news.) *cn
When i brake my prius where the surface is very rough or broken, the brakes seem to engage initially but then release. i have to press down again very hard to get them to engage to the point of stopping the vehicle. yesterday, for example, while completing long slow braking at the bottom of a steep hill, i encountered some rough pavement just before the stop sign and suddenly the brakes seemed to release. when i forcefully pressed them again, they re-engaged and stopped the car, but not before it had nosed into the intersection. *tr
Several times i have applied the brakes on my 2010 prius only to feel the car continue to move forward without any feeling of brake engagement... this would last only a short time... perhaps a second... this occurred when trying to stop on bumpy roadway. *tr
I have a 2010 prius which i bought in august 2009. on several occasions, approximately 8-10 times, i have been braking at slower speeds when coming to an intersection. when i put my foot on the brake and the car happens to hit a bump or hole in the road and the car noticeably surges. my foot is not on the accelerator and this has nothing to do with the floor mats because my floor mat is pinned to the floor of the car. the most recent time this happened was 12/28/2009. *tr
