Problems with 2010 Toyota Prius SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC

On average, the 2010 Toyota Prius starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC and its various aspects after 4 167 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC problems on 2010 Toyota Prius

2010 toyota prius loses brake response completely after hitting any medium sized or larger bump. happens at least twice a week and has resulted in sliding and hitting a curb once. car is unsafe to drive. took car to toyota dealer and was told "there is no fix for this issue at this time" i was given the toyota customer experience phone number and when i called i was greeted with a recorded voice saying "we cannot take your call at this time" "if you need to speak to a representative call back later" and then hung up on. *cn

I have a 2010 toyota prius iii, purchased in june 2009, and have been experiencing brake problems for the past several months. if while braking i happen to hit a bump in the road my brakes fail for a brief moment causing the car to speed up rather than slow down. in order to stop the sudden acceleration i have to push the brake pedal down even further with more pressure and/or quickly lift my foot and brake again. this failure happens fairly consistently if the conditions are correct. the size of the bump in the road does not seem to matter as the brake "failure" has happened with everything from a small pothole to railroad tracks. the failure seems to last only a matter of seconds, but it's enough to possibly cause an accident especially while in a high traffic situation. i didn't start to notice this problem until close to a month into ownership of the vehicle but have become increasingly aware of it every time it happens. i have called my local toyota dealer and filed a complaint with them during my latest service appointment on 1/19/10 since i experienced the failure while on my way to the dealership, but they said they were unable to replicate the problem. *tr

On our 2010 toyota prius, when braking on a fairly steep downhill road, the car seemingly jerks forward/accelerates for a split second. this has happened on several occasions.

Purchased 2010 prius in september 2009. in january 2010 the anti-lock brakes did not engage when braking on a slippery road. no accident occurred but we noted the risk it represented. *tr

I own a 2010 toyota prius and have noticed several issues when braking. on numerous occasions i have noticed that when i am braking and hit a pothole (or any form of dip in the road) my car seems to lunge forward (i.e., accelerate) until the tires are back on level pavement. one of the more frightening incidents occurred this past january. it was below freezing outside, but there had been no precipitation. however, there was one area near a red light where the sprinklers had been left on overnight. this area had turned into a small section of ice. i came up to the intersection and began to brake when i hit this spot. the brakes seemed to malfunction, but it wasn't as if i was skidding on the ice. rather, i could feel the car lunging forward again as it does when it hits a pothole. i heard on npr that other prius owners are experiencing similar issues so i wanted to lodge a complaint to ensure that this gets the proper attention. *tr

Brakes did not immediately catch when applied and caused slight skidding. *tr

I have a 2010 prius iii with brake issues. sporadically, when driving backwards from a parked position the brakes become incredibly sensitive and i have to turn off the car and turn it back on again for them to function normally. on about 01/17/2010, after a heavy rain, when i was again pulling backwards out of my driveway my brakes made a grinding sound as if the pads were gone. mind you i have less than 9,000 miles on the car. again, turned off the car and back on to fix. has not happened again but it hasn't rained either. *tr

I own 2010 toyota prius purchased in january 2010. twice i have encountered braking problem. in braking from 40 miles an hour for traffic congestion, i had to resort to last second additional foot pressure to avoid hitting the car in front of me. unlike the complains i have read in the media, my problem did not occur due to slippery road or any kind of bump. simply put, stopping required unusual foot pressure that i have never encountered in any previous vehicle. *tr

I was driving my 2010 toyota prius on a snow covered, rough residential street. while turning into a driveway to turn around to grab a parking spot, i applied the brakes and they completely released and i slammed to the snow piled at the entrance to the driveway. the front bumper cover got a hole punched into it the size of a baseball from the frozen snow. since then the brakes have released without incident but not without concern. i called and reported the problem to my toyota dealer and he asked "do i have an error showing up on the dash screen" and i said "no". i asked was there a new updated program and he said he did not know anything about it and they don't have a fix anyway. this was before the car was recalled by a couple of weeks but after toyota had started loading a different program onto the car. on feb. 17, 2010 toyota did flash the car's computer to fix the program issues. i would like toyota to have the front bumper cover repaired. thanks. *tr

On several occasions my 2010 prius has failed to stop immediately when i have applied the brake at slow speeds. this has occurred while on ice surfaces as well as clear surfaces. there is just a fraction of a second delay before the brakes take hold. fortunately there has not yet been an accident but if i were to have had less space between me and the car ahead, there would have been a crash. *cn

Loss of braking power (weak braking) when rolling over bumps, pot holes and even cracks in the pavement. *tw

We purchased our 2010 prius in august 2009. since then, my wife has complained several times about how the brakes seem to stop working whenever she is braking and encounters a bump (like a pothole or speed bump). i've noticed it a couple of times myself .. it feels like the brakes are no longer functioning and you have to release the pedal and push it down again to re-engage the brakes. fortunately, we haven't hit anything, yet -- but it is a recurring issue. *tr

2010 third generation prius braking problem , loss of control on rough or slippery surface. *tr

We purchased our toyota 2010 prius v model in january 9, 2010. during the first week of driving we noticed that if we apply brake while turning left it will skit forward just missing the ditch in our drive way or off shooting in the traffic light crossing the median. these incidents were reported to the local toyota dealer and the dealer tech informed us that prius is not in recall and when they test drive they do not find anything wrong. well, we said that it does not appear every time but it does very often. their explanation was that it may be because of the snow as it is winter and being michigan roads not cleared on time. *tr

2010 toyota prius loosing braking power for short period over a bump. can repeat it consistently over the same area on the street very close to my working place. *tr

Brake problem with my 2010 toyota prius. has been happening since i purchased the car but didn't realize it was such a wide-spread problem. one out of every 500 times i push on the brake pedal, the car will first lunge forward for a split second and then begin to decelerate. it is a very clear jolt when the brake pedal is first depressed. *tr

Toyota prius 2010 - i have experienced irregularities with my brakes since i purchased this car on december 28, 2009. i attributed it to my lack of experience driving a car with anti-lock brakes. however, i now believe that these problems are related to the current investigation of prius brakes. two things happen: (1) several times when i place my foot on brake too hard, the car propels forward, (2) under slick conditions and i press the brakes, the brakes take too long to respond and the car continues to move. *tr

We have twice experienced a brake cut-out, where we are coming to a stop sign with foot on brake and hit a bump/pot hole and the car lurches ahead as though we have temporarily removed our foot from the brake even though we haven't. *tw

Toyota prius 2010 - breaks failed to stop car on 3 separate occasions during the past month. each occurrence was at an intersection (roads each time were plowed for snow, but still a bit slick). the car eventually stopped due to the vehicle slowing down, but still not breaking. one occurrence was at an intersection where the car did not break at a red light and i quickly turned the wheel to the right to proceed onto a side road. i have called the service department at the toyota dealership (where the car was purchased last fall), and have not received a response. *cn

Three times when braking with my 2010 prius i have momentarily lost braking power after hitting a pot hole or a bump. the car ended up stopping slightly past where i had intended to brake. *tr

My 2010 toyota prius, purchased 12/28/09, has briefly lurched forward on multiple occasions when i was braking and crossed a bump in the road. i am reporting one date below, but the brief brake failure has recurred repeatedly, always at the same spot on the road.

I bought a 2010 toyota prius in august 2009. after hearing on the radio and tv this week about other buyers experiencing the same braking issue i have been occasionally experiencing, i decided to let you know it's happening to me too. namely, there is a moment when i am braking at a speed of about 15-25 mph, in preparation to slow down for a right turn at one particular intersection--it has a large pothole. if i roll over the pothole with my front right tire, the car seems to speed up for a few seconds--instead of slowing down--and there is nothing that applying more brake pressure can do. sometimes i've noticed this kind of problem when trying to slow down on a patch of black ice, but that seems typical of the difficulty of braking on black ice. the pothole issue happens invariably at that particular pothole, so i have had to swerve to avoid rolling over it. there are other potholes that i've noticed can cause me this problem, but none with such frequency as that. the ground is level there, so it's not a downhill problem. *tr

I have had 3 incidents in the last 8 months with my 2010 prius where when braking there is a slight acceleration before the brakes get in. in all cases i was driving at slow speeds (30mph) on a flat surface. it eventually brakes ok, but it is very nerve wracking. *tr

I have driven my 2010 prius for about 8 months. with the brake applied and slowing the car, the brake releases and the car lurches forward when i hit a bump in the road. fortunately, i was always able to regain control of the vehicle prior to an accident. this event has happened about 5 to 10 times in the 8 months and seems to occur at slower speeds like approaching a stop sign or stop light. *tr

2010 toyota prius. this week, toyota is supposed to announce whether the 2010 prius will be recalled for problems with its braking system. i brought my prius on september 4, 2009 from san francisco toyota. i have the problem that has been described in the media: though i have not driven it in rainy conditions, the braking system fails when i hit a pot hole while applying the brakes. there is a hill near my home that i drive most every day. it happens in the same place every time: i am headed downhill toward a stop sign; i hit the pot hole and for a second my car feels as though it were hydro planing--i have absolutely no control. i didn't think to complain about this before i began hearing the news. i don't drive very much in the city and it was only in this one specific place that the brake system seemed to fail. but it is terrifying to feel that your car is out of control. if i drove my prius more i am certain i would be experiencing this design flaw more. i encourage nhtsa to bring its regulatory weight to bear to force toyota to fix this problem--which it has for 2010 prius's sold after january 2010. i would like the same safety measures taken for those of us who have defective and potentially dangerous vehicles, but who bought our prius's before january 2010. *tw

When attempting to brake while coming to a traffic light on a slightly icy road, the car accelerated. it was not the function of antilock brakes, but rather a surge that was totally unexpected and somewhat frightening. luckily there was no car immediately in front of me, or i would have surely rear ended it. i reported this to toyota and there is a case number - 1001142944. given toyota's slowness to react to the gas pedal issue, i want to notify nhtsa. *tr

Brakes seem to fail when braking over a depression in the road or when braking on icy patches of the road. this has happened at least five times in december, 2009 and january/february 2010. prius *tw

Noticed the braking on my 2010 prius has a few problems every now and then. when pressing down on the brake pedal it feels like the brakes aren't working or that the vehicle is accelerating. i live in fairbanks, alaska and having brakes that work is especially important here where the roads are covered with ice six months of the year. i called the toyota dealership and informed them of the problem and they told me that there wasn't a recall for the prius and transferred me to the main toyota line to answer my questions, but that call ended due to high phone call volume. *tr

Brake problem with 2010 toyota prius. *tr

I have had numerous problems with the brakes on my new 2010 prius which i purchased a few days before xmas. i have reported two of the episodes with toyota - the first time the phone rep seemed to listen carefully to my account of what happened - the last time i called the phone rep seemed to blow me off and didn't' ask any follow up questions but said to take it to my local dealer for repairs. this was before the brake issue became known as a widespread problem - the local dealer where i purchased the car told me there were no problems - again this is before the announcement of the potential recall - both times - i was driving slowly and when i put my foot on the b rake it not only didn't stop but actually seemed to jump forward several feet. fortunately there were no cars in front of me so i did not hit anything. i have also had repeated braking problems when i am backing up- and when i first drive the car after not driving it for an hour or so - just a bare touch of the brake and it stops so hard - the first time i thought i had hit something - the brakes will continue to jerk and jolt me until i start to drive forward - then it seems to correct itself. i have had the car one month - i live in the los angeles area. *tr

I want to register a complaint that i am experiencing loss of braking in my 2010 prius when the car hits a bump or pot hole in the road. have been in conversations with toyota personnel. no satisfaction to date with possible fix. no accidents have occurred thus far with my vehicle. it has occurred several times, most notably since the roads are getting rougher as a result of winter. *tr

Listed one date, but not a single incident - has happened several times since i purchased car in aug 2009. when braking and hit a pothole or bump in the road, car accelerates/jerks forward for a moment. i have been lucky so far that i haven't been close to another car or a pedestrian when this has happened - though i came very close to hitting the back of one car that stopped quick in front of me when this happened. *tr

I got into a wreck when driving my 2010 toyota prius because i feel the breaks did not work properly. the driver in front of me slammed on his brakes and i slammed on mine, i was in the middle of a 3 car pileup. i did not receive a citation because i was not following to close, which leads me to believe the breaks were not working as good as they should have. i am in industrial engineer and i believe this is most likely a computer problem. i drove a honda civic for 13 years and the breaks were much sharper, once activated they stopped the car much faster. i never got into a wreck with my civic, however, after owning my prius for only 2 weeks i got into a wreck. the incident number provided by the oklahoma city police department is 102719. *tr

When braking, the brakes seem to loose partial grip on and off. also when braking over a pothole or uneven road the car seems to accelerate suddenly and there is a feel of loss of control. these are both very scary. *tr

Driving a 2010 prius with a half inch of fresh snow on a residential street at 20 degrees. driving at 12 mph, slowing to a stop at a stop sign. twice the brakes stopped working, causing me to come to a stop beyond the pedestrian crosswalk. fortunately, no pedestrians were there. it felt as if abs had engaged, causing me to lose control of braking. even if this is a design element, it caused me to not be able to stop in time. i was going 7 mph when this happened and would have easily stopped the car in time if this had not happened. after this incident i had to approach intersections at 3-5 mph, afraid that my slow speed would cause somebody behind me to rear end me. *tr

At least 4 times while braking as i turn onto another road in my 2010 prius, the car seemingly jerks forward/accelerates for a split second. it is very jarring and frightening and there is clearly something wrong. *tr

My 2010 toyota prius was a week old. i was exiting on a sloping downward ramp from lake shore drive in chicago and getting ready to stop and turn right. road conditions were wet and cold but not icy. i applied the brakes and the car failed to stop. i pumped the brakes several times before they "grabbed." luckily there was no car in front of me or behind me. if there had been a car in front, i would surely have rear ended it. i thought being a "new" prius driver i had done something wrong but it definitely caused me some panic. i now have 456 miles on the odometer. the brakes have not slipped since the first incident but i have been very cautious in applying them in similar situations. *tr

The brakes release for a "second" or two when the car hits a bump, especially in cold or wet weather. my car has slid through intersections in the winter a number of times because of this. i have to start braking three blocks ahead in bad weather because i never know when the brakes will release. this is very dangerous. *tr

After owning the car for 1 month, i have noticed that on occasion, when i press the brakes, the car will automatically accelerate for a second before breaking. this does not happen every time, but it does happen a few times day. i have no way of figuring out what could be contributing factors since it just happens when i am braking just before it completely stops, no matter what speed i am driving. *cn

I have been experiencing a failure of the brakes on uneven pavement or when going over man hole covers. this has happened to me three times in the first month of ownership of my 2010 toyota prius. *tr

Anti lock brakes do not work properly car jumps when hitting an uneven roadway when appling brakes. *tr

2010 toyota prius anti-lock brakes fail to stop skidding on minor ice. *tr

I own a toyota prius 2010 model. i acquired this vehicle in sep of 2009. i have noticed that when the car was traveling on a bumpy road, the brakes doesn't seem to engage. it seem to accelerate. i have noticed this only in slow speeds and it never occurred to me that it could be a manufacturing mistake. i blamed it on the road condition. this has happened many times and jan 10 was an approximate date. now realizing that i should have voiced my concern earlier. i am a long term toyota owner and i always trusted toyota and it must have blind sighted me. now i am getting nervous driving the car. *tr

I drive a 2010 toyota prius. on multiple occasions while attempting to slow down on rough surfaces, the brakes temporarily stopped working for 1-2 seconds even though the brake pedal was depressed. the most recent incident occurred while exiting the highway and attempting to slow down quickly on rough pavement. luckily, there were no other cars in front of me or there would have been a collision. if a car had been in front of me on any of the occasions then there would have likely been a collision. *jb

I own a brand new 2010 toyota prius with approximately 3,000 miles at this point. i have experience on a number of occasions a complete loss of braking ability when i forcefully applied the brakes in order to come to stop while traveling over a pothole or a serious pavement deformation. my wife has experienced the same problem on a couple of instances too. the loss of brakes is very short in duration but is absolutely frightening since the car travels quite a bit before the brakes take effect again. on one occasion the prius was about one quarter of a car length into the intersection before it came to a complete stop. this happened while traveling only 35 mph on a residential street and attempting to come to a full stop at an intersection. fortunately no other cars were traveling through the intersection at the time. i attempted to call toyota about this issue but it is impossible to get through to a live person at this time due to the volume of calls generated by the recall. *tr

I have a 2010 prius and have experienced the ame type of brake floating as others have reported

Antilock brakes don't seem to work effectively on my 2010 prius, brought june 2009. i've been driving for 48 yrs in upstate new york; an experienced driver in the snow/ice roads. this 2010 prius is dangerous to drive on snow/ice roads. i thought maybe the tires were lousy or that i'm not accustomed to antilock brakes. but now that i'm hearing about this very problem with other 2010 prius, i'm convinced that the problem is with the car's antilock brakes. if there's any snow on the road, i know that i need alot of room to complete a stop and this is not going fast at all. i've had two near crashes so far and at very low speeds. *tr

I have a problem with my toyota prius 2010 braking system. brake fails sometimes on stop signs. the brake control is lost for a few seconds at that time. i feel like the control is lost. the vehicle moves forward and stop. i spoke with my neighborhood dealer who informed me that toyota is working on this issue and nothing can be done until a recall is issued for this problem. *tw *tr

I have a 2010 prius purchased in dec 2009. i have experienced the lurching forward when going over bumpy roads (including potholes) when there are icy conditions and my foot is on the brake. this has happened at least 3 times. *tr

Brakes momentarily disengaged on 2 occasions while i was traveling at a low speed on a slippery surface. *tr
