We have classified the 294 complaints from 2008 Jeep Wrangler about AIR BAGS into the following categories.
Air bag light and chime go off and on while driving for no reason. happens every few minutes while driving. it has been doing this for over six months. *tr
The clockspring assembly in the steering column fails causing one or more open circuits to the driver's air bag. service bulletin exists for factory replacement of the 2007 postal version, chrysler extended coverage for all of 2007 model year wranglers. the problem also exists in the 2008 model year. i was able to get the clockspring replaced for a reduced cost 'co-pay' thru chrysler customer service but the lack of a service bulletin covering the 2008 model year made resolution of the problem an unusual process. most consumers would incur an expensive repair for a known problem. worse, the problem was misdiagnosed by the service computer and erroneously indicated the air bag was defective. *tr
On the 2008 jeep wrangler (lhd) dashboard, the airbag warning light flashes on every other minute with a chime, an indication that there is something malfunctioning or interfering with the vehicle's airbags.this has been a recurring issue and concern for many 2008 jeep wrangler (lhd) owners, including myself, and has been shown time and time again to be caused by a faulty clockspring within the vehicle's steering wheel. this faulty clockspring is the culprit for potential airbag failure in the 2008 jeep wrangler (lhd) during an accident or premature deployment when simply driving around. daimler chrysler has refused to address the safety concern of their faulty clockspring that can cause failure of the vehicle's airbags from properly deploying. *tr
Driving on mountain road at approx. 25 mph when the airbag caution light came on. comes on and off approx. every 15 to 30 seconds no matter what speed the vehicle is traveling. *tr

The airbag light is always on. this is on a 2008 jeep wrangler, regular side drive. i have checked with a jeep dealer they are very disconcerted about it. they said i have to pay to have this safety item fixed. *tr
The airbag warning light on my 2008 jeep wrangler dashboard began flashing on every other minute with a chime, an indication that there is something malfunctioning or interfering with the vehicle's airbags. it now stays lit whenever the car is on. i was told by the dealership that i need to replace the clockspring. this has been a recurring issue and concern for many 2008 jeep wrangler owners, including myself, and has been shown time and time again to be caused by a faulty clockspring within the vehicle's steering wheel. the 2007 jeep wranglers had the same issue and there was a recall for this part. this faulty clockspring is the culprit for potential airbag failure in the 2008 jeep wrangler during an accident or premature deployment when simply driving around. daimler chrysler has refused to address the safety concern of their faulty clockspring that can cause failure of the vehicle's airbags from properly deploying. *tr
Malfunction with the airbag light, light remains on. also cruise control not working. *js
Airbag light stays on. mechanic says the clock spring is faulty. this is a problem with many jeep owners that i know. this is a safety hazard, because the airbag may not deploy in a collision. *tr
Airbag light turns on and off at all speeds as well as chimes. checked all seat harness connections and no problems. *tr
My vehicle clock spring which controls my airbag system has been compromised due to no fault of my own, chrysler refuses to cover it under their l37 recall for vehicles manufactured between feb 2007- oct 2011, this is a huge safety concern as my air bags are not functioning and i do not feel i should have to incur the cost of replacing it. *tr
Air bag light stays lit, with intermittent chime. i took my car to the dealer who told me that i had a faulty clockspring and it needed to be replaced. i asked if it was under warranty or under an active recall. the dealer informed me that the 2007 was recalled for this issue, but the 2008 or later models were not, despite having the exact same part and issue. this issue also affects the horn, as the function of the horn properly working is now intermittent as well. result of this problem - no airbag and no horn. from what i have read online - a very common problem among jeep owners. please help jeep owners with this common issue and make chrysler recall this part. *tr
Airbag warning light just started sounding randomly not due to any adverse driving condition or extreme maneuvering. took it to dealer charged $75 for them to tell me it would cost another $450 and that the airbags may or may not deploy. *tr
I was turning out of my driveway and heard a snap in the steering wheel. air bag light came on and the horn no longer worked. the next day i heard another little snap and the cruise control stopped working. when turning the steering wheel i can hear things scraping inside it. i have been informed that the clockspring is broken. *js
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 jeep wrangler. the contact stated the air bag warning light illuminated and the clock spring failed. the contact mentioned that the failure may have been directly related to nhtsa campaign id number: 11v528000 (air bag: frontal). the manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was not included on any recalls. the failure mileage was 79,000 and the current mileage was 89,000. updated 10/10/12 *cn the consumer also stated the 1st gear in the transmission was also defective, which caused the transmission to pop out of gear. updated 10/17/12
The esp, bas, abs, and airbag lights are all on. when you start driving there is a clunking noise and it hesitates to go. sometimes when you are driving it starts to clunk and it is hard to steer. at times it is like you are dragging the rear end. and at times it even feels like you are dragging the rear end sideways.
Airbag warning light illuminates intermittently. over several days it has progressed to near constant. the light will illuminate along with a chime each time the steering wheel has been turned. *tr i have not had the opportunity to take it in for service yet.
Airbag light stays lit constantly. horn does not work. esp\bas light on dash stays lit constantly. dealer diagnosed the issue as a faulty clockspring. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 jeep wrangler. while driving various speeds, the vehicle shook violently. the dealer stated that the tie rods and steering dampers needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred a year later. the tie rods and the steering dampers needed to be replaced again. on a different occasion, while driving 10 mph, the vehicle suddenly began to wobble. the dealer stated that the rear passenger side axle shaft was bent and caused the failure. the vehicle was repaired. in addition, the air bag indicator illuminated sporadically. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer who specified that the clock spring needed to be repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 13v176000 (air bags) or nhtsa campaign number: 11v528000 (air bags). the failure mileage was 45,010.
My airbag light continues to light up and beeps. i researched it and it says that it is a airbag clockspring failure. i called and chrysler is not willing to help me. had i known this i would have not purchased the $40,000 vehicle. i would not recommend this vehicle to no one.
Due to clock spring failure the light for the air bag comes on intermittently mostly when vehicle is turning or going over a bumpy surface. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 jeep wrangler. while driving approximately 20 mph, the brake light illuminated on the instrument panel and the brake pedal dropped to the floorboard abnormally. the contact stopped the vehicle on the shoulder of the road and added brake fluid to the braking system. in addition, the air bag waning light was illuminated. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer where the technician stated there was a hole in the brake tube due to the steering shaft rubbing against the tube. the brake line would have to be replaced and the clock spring for the air bags was fractured and would also need replacing. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign id numbers: 08v202000 (service brakes, hydraulic:foundation components:hoses, lines/piping, and fittings) and 11v528000 (air bags:frontal) but was advised by the manufacturer that the vin was not included in either recall. the brake line was repaired but the clock spring was not. the approximate failure mileage was 56,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 jeep wrangler. the contact stated that a warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and the contact was informed that the clock spring needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and the contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 11v528000 (air bags:frontal). the failure mileage was unknown. ..updated 04/16/12 *bf the consumer stated she is now in the process of trying to get reimbursed for the recall repairs. updated 05/10/12
Airbag warning light in instrument panel consistently goes off during irregular speed, steering wheel operation, and temperature. there is no pattern that correlates with the timing of the airbag warning light. when it first started, it would only come during at brief moments and turn off again. now, april, it turns off after vehicle start (like normal operation), comes back on immediately, and only briefly does it turn off at random times. the majority of the time the warning light fluctuates is during steering wheel turning. turning to one particular side does not alter the light more than the other. sometimes hard bumps in the road or off-road scenarios will change the light too. knowing very well this could be the clockspring, no other lights or functions involved with this device confirm this is the problem. the horn works at all turning angles, esp and abs all function normally. there are also no dtc codes from the computer. all visible electrical plugs in the cabin and behind dash have been unplugged, cleaned from debris and reconnected. i find the current recall for only the 2007s and right hand drive 2008s very frustrating! the assumption that only rhds will have their windows down more on dirt roads might be factual; however, there are numerous of 2008 jeep wrangler owners that use their vehicle for work, or off-road scenarios that will easily bypass the rhd assumption. this is a very scary problem to have. i do no feel safe that any accident i have the airbags will deploy properly. the faith of my vehicle saving my life is completely lost. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 jeep wrangler. the contact stated that the air bag warning lamp illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the air bag module was defective and need to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was not included in any recalls. the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was 52,000 and current mileage was 55,000.
Air bag light comes on intermittently, esp bas light comes on intermittently. depends on wheel orientation. i am suspecting clockspring is at fault. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 jeep wrangler. the contact was driving 15 mph when the air bag warning light illuminated, indicating a malfunction with the driver side air bag. in addition, the clock spring was also defective and needed to be replaced. the contact did not take the vehicle to a dealer or local mechanic for diagnosis or repairs. the failure mileage was 34,477.

Airbag is disabled intermittently most frequently after straightening the steering wheel following a turn. *tr
I own a jeep tour company and this is the third clockspring i have had to replace in two different jeeps. while traveling at 5mph or under the airbag light illuminated. after having the dealer check it out i was advised it was a clockspring issue. i replaced this one on my own. they charge $1450 just to check what part, then $280 for the part. this has been done at tto seperate local dealer ships. i have saved two clocksprings, one done from a 2007 jeep and one from this 2008.
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 jeep wrangler. the contact stated that the airbag warning light would illuminate on the instrument panel. the dealer was contacted and suggested the contact make an appointment to inspect the vehicle. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and told the contact to take the vehicle to the dealer for inspection. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 48,800 and the current mileage was 50,000.
The "airbag-warning-light" in the dashboard of my jeep wrangler x comes on and stays on, including making the "peeping warning sound" ever so often. the dealer diagnosed it as the "clock-spring" in the steering wheel (an approx. $400+ repair). this is not only an extremely expensive repair, but more importantly a major safety issue and concern, especially for a just over 3 year young car, just out of warranty. the airbag(s) will not deploy in case of an accident as long as the "airbag-warning-light" in the dashboard is on. i have read that a lot of jeep owners, as well as others, are having the same problem. this should definitely be a recall, since the clock-spring should not be defective after just 3 years. this seems like a faulty part, which should be replaced at manufactures expense.
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 jeep wrangler. the contact stated that the air bag light remained illuminated and the horn would not sound. the vehicle was taken to a local repair shop and a diagnostic test was performed. the technician stated that the clock spring failed. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and denied assistance with repairs because the vehicle was not included in the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 11v528000 (air bags: frontal). the dealer replaced the clock spring. the failure mileage was 57,000 and the current mileage was 68,000. updated 03/02/12*lj
The warranty has been extended to 150,000 miles on the 2007 wranglers, but not on the 2008 wranglers. they are the same part number, why was chrysler not forced to extend the warranty on 2008's? the cockspring failure causes the airbag to not deploy. *tr
Horn stopped working and air bag light illuminating intermittently. i knew i would not pass inspection so i brought it to auto repair shop. they discovered clock spring module defective and $400.00 to repair. these are two not one simultaneous safety failures (horn and airbag) resulting from defective clock spring.
The air bag light on the driver side stays on, and will not go off.
1. the horn and possibly the airbag is not working. 2. we now have to purchase $300 in parts because the airbag clock spring has malfunctioned. *tr
The airbag light continuously goes on and off, that has been going on about a year, now my horn wont work. im told it has been a common problem with jeep around my year(2008). in fact 2007 had a recall on their clock spring, which is now what i'm being told is the issue. chrysler has done nothing to assist or acknowledge the issue. *tr
Air bag indicator light stays on continuously. air bag alarm sounds when steering wheel is turned on tight corners. obd ii fault code b1bo2 clockspring. thus, the airbags will not deploy. this should be a safety recall, as it is for the prior year and same year with steering wheel on the right of the vehicle. *tr
The airbag light stays on occasionally making a warning bell. i have no idea if the airbag is functional. had it to the dealer once but since i work in this vehicle i could not leave it so they could not determine if it is the clockspring or an airbag module. the fuel inlet also spews gas when filling up the gas tank. there has been a recall on the fuel issue, but i have had parts on order for eight months and they are still on backorder.
Turning steering wheel while driving, airbag dash indicator illuminates and warning tone activated. return steering to center and indicator light extinguishes. warning light illuminates and tone activates sporadically when steering wheel is turned but with increased frequency over the period of 2011-2012. in 2013, the airbag dash indicator remains illuminated regardless of steering wheel position or vehicle movement. in latter-half of 2014, the horn has failed to work. *tr
When turning steering wheel, airbag light comes on. dealer identified problem as a clockspring issue. *tr
The air bag clockspring in my 2008 rhd jeep wrangler has failed and been replaced twice at my expense. the first was 09/13/10 @ 39693 miles and again 12/15/11 @ 69120 miles. i found on your site that there was a recall in progress, l37 for 2008 - 2012 rhd jeep wranglers. i called chrysler and was told my vin was not covered under this recall. my concern is: how many other rhd jeep wranglers are there out there that have or may experience the same problem but are not included in the recall? it appears obvious that the recall should be expanded. i have receipts for these repairs if needed and feel free to contact me for more info. *tr
