Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2006 Jeep Commander

I was driving in my community on a local street at rate of 45 miles hour. for no reason, my 2006 jeep commander stalled and i had no power or anything control of the car. scary to say the least. i had to pull over to the side of the road and restart my car. now, when i try to start it, the horn will not stop and i cannot turn off my fog lamps or high beams. now i am mad and want answers. i pay a lot of money to keep this car in good shape, now this. *tr

Tl* the contact owns 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that when trying to start her vehicle it would stall intermittently. the instrument panel speedometer gauge failed and would not display how fast the vehicle was traveling and the windshield wipers would not operate when they were turned on. the vehicle was taken to a dealer who advised her that they were unable to diagnose the failure stated it could be related to the negative side of the can-b bus. the manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. the failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was approximately 82,000.

While driving, jeep commander will randomly jump to neutral and when press gas will rev up only. have to either manually shift the gear to neutral then back to drive or pullover turn off jeep and star back up. the physical shifter does not move to neutral position just the actual gear. does at random times and speeds and when it does the jeep will not accelerate which can cause accidents especially on highways. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that while driving approximately 60 mph, all of the warning lights illuminated intermittently and the vehicle decelerated independently. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis however, the technicians were unable to diagnose the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 52,000. *tr

Electrical dash board blinks while driving, driver's seat moves while driving, when it rains the driver's floor is soaked with water and passenger side floor is wet as well, vehicle jerks while driving. indication lights pops on dashboard sporadically, radio and navigation doesn't work. *tr

Out of the blue the whole radio/cd/navigation console went out! the radio still works, but only the preset stations and i can only control it from the steering wheel. then i noticed that the air bag light(on instrument panel) is turning on and off and beeping each time. there have also been water issues coming from the sunroof, soaking the floor boards in mainly the passenger side but sometimes also the drivers side. this only happens when the vehicle is parked. *tr

Electrical issue that is causing all dashboard lights to flicker on and off, heat/air goes on and off, audio center goes on and off all electrical functions go no and off. dealership blamed my remote starter(which they. *tr installed) but turned out it wasn't and they have no idea what it is. say they can't determine what it is unless it is happening when i bring it in. the interior door opening casing crumbles. already had drivers door fixed because i couldn't open door from inside and was told all doors would eventually have to be done. doors freeze due to poor drainage. water collects inside door frame and running board, freezing all doors. if not for the remote starter, wouldn't be able to get in the car at all. *tr

I have a 06 jeep commander that has been completely shutting down while i'm driving. the rpms go up over 3 and 4 and the gears shifts from high to low. and also my engine light comes on and stays on. *tt

I was pulling out of my driveway when all the instrument lights came on. i thought it had stalled! when i looked down, the ob data screen said awd system failed. i put it in park turned off the key and tried to restart it and it would not. that's when i looked up and noticed a lot of white smoke coming from the front of my car! within a second it turned to black smoke! i smelled something burning. i hurried up and got my son and i out of the jeep and backed away, and within a few seconds there was a pop and the jeep engine compartment was on fire. we called 911. *tr

While driving, the instrument panel began flashing all the warning lights several times for a period of 5 minutes. the warning lights that stayed on afterwards: traction control and electronic stability program and bsp. this could have caused a crash because i was distracted by the malfunction. *tr

I own a 2006 jeep commander ltd. with the 5.7l hemi. date of manufacturer was 06/06. in the past year my commander has began stalling out sporadically while stopped completely. it occurs at any time, night or day, usually only when the engine is cold or cool. the problem occurs when i come to a complete stop at a stop sign, stop light, or any other complete stop in drive or reverse. when i come to a complete stop the rpm's drop and the vehicle stalls out. no warning lights or check engine lights show up on the dash. when it occurs at night all the external vehicle lights turn off, thus making me and my vehicle vulnerable to other traffic. it does not trip a code in the computer so the dealer cannot diagnose the problem. the first time i took my vehicle in for maintenance regarding the problem the dealer recommended i replace the egr valve so i did what they recommended. the problem still occurs. the dealer advised me that they cannot duplicate the problem therefore there is nothing they can do to correct the problem. when my vehicle stalls out it typically will do it 3-5 additional times per trip and it happens at least once per week. i have read that numerous people are having the same problems and jeep has no fix. i am very concerned with this problem because it is unsafe as i was nearly struck by another vehicle. recently i was traveling down the street at night and was preparing to turn left at a stop light. i stopped in the middle of the intersection to wait for the oncoming traffic to pass, when my car stalled out and all of the lights turned off (headlights, running lights, etc) making my vehicle completely invisible to traffic. i was unable to move the vehicle until i placed it in neutral and had to restart the engine and move out of the intersection. please look further into this problem with 2006 jeep commanders as this is not something that should happen. *tr

This has happened twice, i was driving home from work at 55mph with my new born child, and the engine shut off, the electirc shut off and the power sterring quit. the car behind me almost smashed into me. the jeep came to a stop and then i turned the key and it turned back on. please help me! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that the vehicle stalled while driving at various speeds. the vehicle operated as normal upon restart. the contact also stated that the vehicle would intermittently experience difficulty starting and required a jump start. in addition, the windows would involuntarily begin opening when he intended to close them. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the contact was informed that the failure could possibly have been due to the electrical system. the battery was replaced but the failures continued. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 08v203000 (power train:automatic transmission:control module (tcm, ppm)). no additional repairs were performed. the failure mileage was 60,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that the air conditioner, heater and interior and exterior lights would activate sporadically when engaged. the lights would flicker and the air conditioner and heat would shut off and on. when the failure would occur, the vehicle would stall as well and the only warning was that the lights would flicker. the vehicle was not inspected or repaired. the current mileage was 42,000.

Transmission control switch 2006 jeep commander when going down the road goes from drive to 3rd gear i almost got hit in the rear by another car check nengine light comes on and you cant get it ouyt of 3rd gear. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, all the warning lights illuminated. the headlights also failed intermittently. the failure recurred numerous times over the course of a year. the vehicle was taken to dealer where the contact was informed that the battery would need to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. the dealer informed the contact that the failure could not be diagnosed. the manufacturer was notified but offered no assistance. the vehicle had not been repaired. the failure mileage was 50,000 and the current mileage was 72,000.

After having problems with dashboard lights going all on and off while driving two years ago, now my transmission has failed and the computer has gone out of the car. i have had ongoing issues with the air conditioning, and have replaced the module in the air conditioning to just have the issue re-appear a year later. the cruise control has gone out. and with heavy rains, i have leaking with my sunroof. *kb

This problem happens year round. once you put the vehicle into drive, all of the shift lights "prnd" light up and the vehicle won't accelerate. if you are already driving down the road/ freeway, it will randomly light up and stop accelerating. when it randomly occurs, it happens with no warning, and you have to attempt to pull the vehicle over to the side of road, put it into neutral or park or restart the vehicle, and attempt it again. the check engine light will come on and the problem will happen repeatedly over a week period, then the problem will stop for a week or two and then resurface at the worst time- for example an intersection, an on-ramp, a busy street, and it has presented huge safety issues for me and my family. does it take someone dying for this to get recalled? i have read forum after forum of the same issue amongst consumers with my exact make, model, and year (and earlier models) and yet, when i called jeep, they say they have never heard of it, there is no recall, and i've been turned away. *kb

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled. the interior lighting and the instrument panel lighting began to flicker erratically, and a warning light on the instrument panel displayed a message indicating that the transmission overheated. the contact also stated that she previously experienced intermittent deceleration as well as flickering of the interior lighting. the vehicle was towed home. the dealer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact to bring the battery in for inspection. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 94,000.

I was getting off on an exit with a slight incline. i had my foot slightly on the break to decelerate. the car jerked and the traction control and abs lights came on. the roads were dry. there was no reason for the traction control and abs to turn on. the lights remained on. it felt as if someone put their foot on the breaks quickly. after i arrived at my location i turned the car off. when i restarted the car the lights were off. i contacted my service center. they had me bring in the car. they re-flashed to correct the codes. *tt

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that while stopped, she attempted a right turn but the vehicle would not accelerate. additionally, the instrument panel warning lights illuminated intermittently while the contact was driving at different speeds. the vehicle would also not shift out of neutral. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where the technician stated that the ecm would have to be replaced. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 13v175000 (electrical system , power train) but was advised by the manufacturer that the vin was not included in the recall. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 50,000. *tr

I was driving along the highway, when the vehicle stalled and all of the lights came on. i pulled to the side of the road and restarted it and drove away. after taking it in i was told it was a problem with crankshaft position sensor and that it needed to be replaced. after replacing the crankshaft position sensor and driving it back up to the mountains, it happened again. same problem. i replaced the crankshaft position sensor for a second time. 6 months later a similar problem happened but instead of shutting down the car just sputtered and the engine light came on and started blinking. after taking it in the shop said that the 02 sensor needed replacing. i had passenger front o2 sensor replaced last month, and now it is happening again. the shop is now saying that the pcm is bad and that needs to be replaced. when will this end? *tr

In june of 2011 i was driving down the fwy at 70mph when the engine turned off steering wheel locked and i has to coast off the fwy luckily it was night and little traffic (california is known for heavy fwy traffic. it started again early 2012 this time the transmission would not shift at appropriate times and rev the engine while maintaining speed in any gear and would do that for 5-7 days in a row and then run normally (this still occurs at least once a month) dealership and other mechanics could not find an issue and basically stated the engine was running hot and the fan had not kicked in no the case since this was winter time when it began. as recently as april of 2014 it began turning off completely when slowly coming to a stop anywhere on the fwy at a signal going uphill, downhill, parking in a parking space and this happens every day all day long - it never does not do it. at this time i have 117000 and it is very unsettling as i have a 7 year old son, a full time job and live in busy california - the fact that jeep/chrysler is unable to determine the repair needed is putting my family at risk day after day - i can barely afford and make ends meet and this has caused me much stress. i cannot afford to purchase another vehicle as i have tried for the past year. please help me. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. while attempting to turn off the vehicle, the key would not eject from the ignition and remained in the off position. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure recurred on numerous occasions. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 14v438000 (electrical system); however, the part to repair the vehicle was unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was unknown.

2006 jeep commander does not start. we have to try about 30 times sometimes to get it to start. it just makes a clicking noise. also the jeep commander will stall while driving. (very dangerous) especially with two kids. another problem is it gets stuck in low gear or 4x4 (not sure which). i have read complaint after complaint on the internet about these same problems with many many 2006 commanders. i am very displeased with how jeep has swept these problems under the carpet. yes, they have had a few recalls, but nothing to fix these very serious and very dangerous defects. please help, as we spent a good amount of money on what we thought and needed to be a reliable vehicle. it is not reliable at all. *tr

1st problem was my interior lights flashing on and off. i could not get it to do it while at the dealers. 2008 i thought my transmission was going bad. the dealer said that my transmission had a leak and charged me to replace some part. then it happened again. then they said i needed to service the transmission. i am surprised that dealer never mention any problems with the jeep commander ( i thought it was just my car) as i have called several times about the car shifting into neutral, and wondering if it was a transmission problem. the problem comes and goes. i just paid my car off, and now when i ride on the express way and go past 60 the enitre car shakes bad. if i hit a bump i can hear something like a crack noise. sometimes when i make a sharp turn i hear a click click noise. at this i didn't trust the dealer and was thinking that maybe it was my axil. took it to pet boys and they could find anything wrong with it. they said i needed new tires, so i bought 4. the problem still continued. i am so upset as i am a single mom and just finished paying my car off. i also have had to replace the alternator, radiator, water pump, thermometer, which i though was normal as the car is 2006. now past 2 days i can smell a funny smelly, white fog comes out of my vents, and the passenger side floor is wet. i googled the problem and it says that it is the "heater core". the tire light is alway on with no flat. the engine light comes on frequently and says check gas cap. so far i have bought 3 gas caps. i can't believe that i struggled to pay this car off and now having all of these problems. i am not sure which problems are normal wear and tear and which ones are a manufacturer problems, but this is a night mare. i am so mad that i ever bought my jeep commander. jeep should be ashamed of themselves. *tr

While driving, i have a total loss of interior electrical. all systems go off although the vehicle continues running. this affects the steering as well as braking. there is nothing consistent about the problem. it has been taken to multiple dealers and they can find no issue. i've even taken in a video recording of the situation.

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that the vehicle back up sensor failed while backing out of a parking lot and crashing into a vehicle. a police report was filed. the contact did not suffer any injuries. the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who stated that the sensor was defective and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 22,000. updated 09/08/11*lj the crash sensor was stuck inside the bumper, which caused it to go off at all times in reverse. updated 10/31/11

Our 2006 jeep commander intermittently stalls while driving. usually, the instrument panel lights go crazy, all the lights flashing on and off, and then the vehicle stalls. this happens at anytime, and has happened on the highway! this issue leaves no faults on the computer when checked by a dealer. dealer replaced the ignition lock, but this did not fix the issue. they have no more suggestions. the internet is filled with other owners of this and other jeep vehicles that have experienced the same serious issue. obviously, this could be extremely dangerous!! *tr

The instrument warning lights will flash on and off. this includes the speedometer and the odometer which will drop to zero. also, the hvac fan will cut out when this is happening. headlights do not flash on and off and the engine has never cut out. sometimes the warning lights will remain off along with the gauges for several seconds. this occurs randomly and occurs at all speeds. the truck starts without issue. the flashing can occur immediately or at random times while driving. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the vehicle rolled away while parked. in addition, the vehicle failed to start on multiple occasions. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 13v175000 (electrical system, power train). the approximate failure mileage was 60,000.

2006 jeep commander limited purchased brand new dec 2006 from mccune chrysler and jeep, national city california. purchased extended service contract max 6/70, covering my car to 70,000. car currently has 63,000 miles (extended service contract). never had an problems with my vehicle at all. took car to purchasing location for repairs jan 2011. while there, service advisor said i needed a new exhaust manifold and it was covered under service contract. since then, my car has cut off in traffic causing me to almost loose my life by being hit by traffic, all lights on my dash panel lights up like a christmas tree, car will not accelerate when gas pedal pushed,,, and i am told that my car has a communication problem and they can not figure out what's wrong with it. i finally call ed chrysler customer, filed a complaint, and was told that a case manger will be calling me to work with me and the dealership. if the mechanics can not figure it out, then that is a major concern to me because now my life, my kids lives, and any other passengers lives are at jeopardy while in this vehicle. it's a death trap. chrysler nor the mccune are taking responsibility. all i am getting is that it's a communication problem within the car. can someone please help me with this matter? the car was returned to me after 3 days being towed to the dealer and being told it was fixed. the car went back to the shop after two days of having it where it is at this time. *tr

March of 2009 we experienced a problem with our 2006 jeep commander with the electronics in the vehicle shutting down causing the vehicle to stall. we took it into our local dealership where they informed us that the problem was with the shifter module and that it had to be replaced. well $2500 later and missing parts we requested to keep our vehicle was back in our possession with the problem still happening. not as severe as what it had been prior to sending it in, however still happening. this evening my husband was driving home from work when this happened again. only this time the abs went out and the brakes started pumping for no reason, as well as the vehicle stalling out while driving 110kmph. when home we reviewed recalls recommended for 2006 jeep commanders and there is one where it describes the symptoms our vehicle is having in quite detail. amongst investigating further it was determined that out particular vehicle was not included in the recall although experiencing the same problems. *tr

Bought 2006 commander in 2009,every month it either shuts down while driving or will not start at all, i have replaced the starter, battery, fuses, and switches at my own expense, chrysler will do nothing, i don't know what to do..there are no recalls for v-6 commmanders. *tr

We were traveling home on the interstate going about 75 mph, and all of a sudden everything lights up on the dashboard, and my jeep commander starts shutting down without warning! we had to coast off of a exit ramp, and were thankful we did not get smacked from behind or killed! this is the third time that this happened to me. one other time i was taking my child to school, and it just shut off without warning while the truck was in motion, and i had to coast off to the side to a cvs pharmacy parking lot! another problem with this particular truck is that the door handles are poorly made. all of my door handles just started crumbling one by one and will not open from the inside. i have already put in a complaint about the door handles to nhtsa. the last complaint that i have is when it rains heavily, a huge puddle will dampen my passenger side because water is backed up in the sunroof drains. jeep has cheated a lot of people with this jeep commander! it has too many problems to count and everything cost more than what the jeep is worth! i will never deal with chrysler, jeep, dodge again! they are a bunch of crooks! nhtsa please do something ! this broken door handle issue and shutting off without warning is going to get someone seriously hurt or killed! *jb

Multiple times; while driving vehicle stalls. vehicle fluctuates while idling and then finally stalls. *tr

The issues i have had is stalling in my 2006 jeep commander. there is not any warning sign associated with this. my car has stalled before while driving on the expressway as well as while parked. there is no warning, it just stalls. while driving the car on the expressway it just cut off. luckily i was in the far left lane and was able to steer the car to the shoulder. i turned the ignition off then started to car and it drove as if nothing ever happened. it also stalls while parked with no warning. there is no apparent reason. you then have to unplug the battery for at least 24 hours then hope it starts the next day. i have had the alternator changed and this problem still happens. what i was told by a mechanic is when i unplug the battery it is resetting the electrical control panel. but this has not helped. i still have the same problem. *tr

2006 jeep commander defect of unintended change in ignition switch position while driving *cn the consumer was involved in an accident on august 24, 2010. he believed the accident was the result of the now ignition switch recall. *jb

Vehicle would not start and we had experienced this off and on so we replaced the battery. within a month, car would not start again. while trying to get it started the lights came on, no start. waited, tried again, dimmer lights; waited again nothing! electrical system totally non functioning. we have also had stalling issues and car automatically changing gears. it feels like it just can't get speed up and not even a high rate, just in town. i was driving and noticed the gear went from drive to 3rd! i tried turning it off and restarting with no luck and then that stalling feeling all the way to work. the truck has a mind of it's own but it's not working! *tr

I purchased the 2006 commander in june 2010. the first 6 weeks i had the vehicle i loved it. the first incident i had with the vehicle was the service park assist warning came on and stayed on for two days, then went off on its own prior to getting an appointment to have it checked. the next incident happened when i was idling in traffic at a stoplight. every indicator light on the dash came on and the vehicle started to stall but did not completely stall out. since that episode i have had issues with the driver side front window and passenger side rear window not functioning properly (at times won't roll up or down from either control). more recently i have had increasing episodes (two to three times per month) of the dash lighting up, headlights dimming and the vehicle losing power (so far always while parked or shifting from park to drive), as well as the service park assist warning and window issues. after hearing of a coworker with a 2007 commander having some of the same issues i began searching the internet and have found numerous complaints of the same issues as mine. i am afraid to drive this vehicle with my children inside in the event that it would stall out on the highway and i would not be able to control it. i spoke with the dealer that sold me the vehicle yesterday and they have agreed to look at it free of charge this morning since there is no warranty on it now, but i still am not sure i want to keep this vehicle any longer. chrysler needs to recall these vehicles and fix this issue. i used to be a die hard jeep fan...but no longer! i am surprised that i have not found any reports of death or serious injury as a result of these electrical issues with this particular model.

I'm a owner of a 2006 jeep commander limited and starting to become frustrated and scared to drive this beautiful car. the problem is that the car stalls out (looses power, electrical, power brakes/ steering, everything) when slowing down at a red light, stop sign, parking spot, etc. i have contacted the dealer and several repair shops concerning this problem and they all tell me that they have no idea what it could be and there are no recalls on the issue. just wanted to see what if anything you suggest for me to do as this i not the first time this has happened and probably not the last. thanks *tr

While driving, 06 jeep commander had smoke pouring into the inside from the gear shift, vents, etc. smelled electrical. car refused to turn off on two attempts with keys already out of the ignition. that was the first occasion for that problem. have had several times when i was driving that the car stalls, locking up the steering wheel, etc. have taken it to the dealership for this problem and they said they fixed the recall ???? it still stalls, sometimes three times a day...which is difficult when you have several people behind you. the vehicle is at the shop now as i had to get it towed when it quit running, during the fire. i am currently searching to see if others have had this problem. *tr

My commander is stalling while driving. and at times just will not start. several incidents dating back to years. . i bought this commander new, no miles. one incident i was driving going over 50 mph and all dash board lights came on and it just stalled. another time stalled sitting at red light and all dash board lights came on and it stalled. and over 10 times it just won't start. right now it is broke down, just won't start. over the years i was told it was the starter it was replace 8/3/2010 (i had to pay for starter, labor and towing) then next time i replaced the battery. and still the same problems. i did a check on recalls and found the 2008 commanders was recalled for the same reasons. why haven't the 2006 commanders been recalled? this is a very serious problem. i could be in a wreck when this happens. i have children in my commander age 17 months and 8 months. this problem needs to be recalled and fixed. chrysler knows this is a existing problem for other year commanders, they fixed them why not mine??? and i feel since chrysler accepted this recall in other years and if i wreck chrysler will be responsible for my wreck and any injuries. all i want is for chrysler to fix my commander.... *tr
