Problems with 2013 Ford F-150 POWER TRAIN

On average, the 2013 Ford F-150 starts to “feel” problems with the POWER TRAIN and its various aspects after 77 832 miles.

Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2013 Ford F-150

2013 ford f-150 traveling 65mph all of a sudden will down shift to first gear causeing the vehicle to almost instantly stop in traffic! ford had a recall on this issue but will not assist with fix since my vehicle is not under the recall! told me to go to dealer to get a $120 diagnostic, but once it happens the codes clear 60 seconds after and can not be found at dealership. so ford basically told me to keep driving it till it happens again and hope i'm near a dealership

While driving my truck's speedometer will shut down, as well as the other instrument cluster, except my tach. it will then go into "limp mode" until i'm able to get to the side of the road and recycle the engine. the code the computer is showing indicates an output power speed sensor. this would also indicate a relationship with the leadframe. i was wondering why there is no recall on 2013 f150 while sharing the same 6r80 transmission and causing the same problems?

My 2013 ford f-150 fx4 3.5l v6 automatic transmission is jumping, gets stuck in the first gear or sometimes 5th gear. have to put the vehicle in park and then sometimes shut it off and turn it back on. driving at 30 miles an hour at times it would jump and buck hard. took it to the dealer. they had it for about a week and were unable to duplicate the problem. this issue is very irritating and it feels very dangerous to me. trying to pull out into traffic and then the transmission starts to jump around or is stuck in 5th and you cant get moving is dangerous. the dealer would not offer a repair because they could not duplicate the problem while they had it. but of course it happened on the way home after i picked it up. it is random, but happens every few days.

Getting off the highway the truck would no slow down. it would not shift to 2nd or 1st gear. hard uncontrolled stop. when tried to start moving again truck lunged forward and started from 5th gear. drove directly to the ford dealer as this was a safety concern. it switched gears randomly the entire way to the ford dealer from the highway. 2013 47k miles

For the past 6 months i have had the same issues that others have described. there are several issues happening. 1. when coming to a stop then accelerating, most frequently after getting off highway/interstate the trucks rpms will rev up to 4000, but the truck will never shift out of 1st gear. i have to come to a complete stop and/or restart the truck before it will operate normally. 2. again stop from off highway/interstate when accelerating the truck will slowly move and it will still be in 4th gear which will eventually get up to speed and start to act normal. 3. when driving down the road at 30-50mph the truck will shift down to 1st gear from 6/5th gear casing the rear tires to lock and skid slowing the truck down quickly. i was just able to get off the road in time to not cause an accident. 4. when driving down the road the truck will jerk like it down shifted and shows the wrench icon and then the speedometer drops to 0mph while still traveling down the road. the tachometer still works, but that is about it. i have to restart the truck before it will start working again. had mechanic check for codes, but there was none. this behavior is very erratic and a significant safety hazard, i worry for my safety. there should be a recall for this issue.

I am having the issues described in rq17010. somewhat frequently when slowing down to a stop or driving at slow speeds (i.e. in parking lots) i will experience a harsh downshift in to 1st gear which will cause the rear end to slide if it's slippery out.

At highway speed transmission will downshift to 1st gear locking rear tires. engine rpms hit 5000 to 6000 revs. speedo will stop working. have to pull off the road and restart the truck which resets everything till it happens again. at times during intown driving transmission shifts erratically.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. while driving various speeds, the transmission shifted into first gear independently and shifted out of gear with no acceleration. the vehicle was taken to supreme ford (400 e howze beach rd, slidell, la 70461) where it was diagnosed that the lead frame harness assembly needed to be repaired. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 67,000.

Shifting into first while on interstate. locking up rear tires

When driving 45 mph or more the transmission will sometimes stall or downshift and slow down vehicle. the vehicle jerks and hesitates.

Sometimes vehicle will start or get stuck in 5th gear either from the start or during deceleration. engine revs, but forward motion compromised. intermittent sudden downshifting at highway speeds. gear indicator and tramsmission position will drop to 1st. this causes the rear wheels to lock up at highway speed and put the vehicle into a spin. paid ford dealership to complete tsb lead frame repair in april 2018. problem has gotten worse. opencase with ford fleet service 15493350-j0v7c7

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. while driving 55 mph, the engine downshifted into first gear and the yellow wrench maintenance icon illuminated. rountree ford (8770 business park dr., shreveport, la 71105, (318) 798-3673) diagnosed that the lead frame needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 86,398.

I was driving highway speed and my transmission shifted from 6th gear to 3rd without warning causing my rear tires to lock up and skid. this has happened 3 different times in the last week. i have the truck at the ford dealer now waiting for them to call me back. i know my model year is not involved with the national recall but i fell like it is the same problem. as described in the 2011-2012 recall.

Truck suddenly downshifts from 6th gear to 1st gear while driving 65mph. speedometer goes to zero then bounces erratically.

Truck is down shifting when on highway, at times will not accelerate, loses speedometer indictation, has a output speed sensor code. when accelerating truck from stand still have to turn engine off sometimes multiple times to get transmission to engage

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving at 35 mph without warning, the vehicle downshifted from 5th gear down to 1st gear. the vehicle was taken to tom's ford located at 200 nj-35, keyport, nj 07735, (732) 264-1600, to be diagnosed. the contact was informed that the ecm/tcm/pcm needed to be reset. the reset was performed and the vehicle functioned properly. the manufacturer was not contacted or notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 136,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. while driving 70 mph, the vehicle spontaneously downshifted into first gear and the check engine indicator illuminated. the contact called sunset ford (11700 gravois rd, st. louis, mo 63127, (314) 843-4431) and was informed that diagnostic testing was needed. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 208,000. the vin was not available.

Transmission would shift from 6th gear to 1st for no reason locking up the rear wheels.

Sometimes vehicle will start or get stuck in 5th either from the start or during deceleration. engine revs, but forward motion compromised. more concerning is the intermittent downshifting at highway speeds. speedometer has failed and turns off, reads 0 rmp. gear indicator and tramsmission position will drop to 1st, go back to 5th, and waver anywhere in between. this has even locked up my rear wheels at 70mph. pretty scary! this has happened a handful of times now. thankfully, i have been able to shift to neutral, get to the shoulder, kill the engine, restart and go. i wrote this today b/c i got a wrench light finally, so hopefully they can diagnose this intermittent issue.

Experiencing transmission shifting issues from start and while driving. shifts into different gears randomly. wrench light comes on, lose all dash info, speedometer drops to zero. after reading code p0720 with scanner appears to be leadframe issue as recall for 2011, 2012 f150. my truck is 2013 but there is no recall issued for my truck.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. while driving 15 mph, the transmission failed and the vehicle downshifted into first gear. on another occasion, the contact stated that the vehicle was completely out of gear. also, the rpms increased when the accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle would not accelerate. a dealer was not made aware of the failures. the manufacturer notified. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 140,000.

Driving vehicle several times at 45 to 70 mph transmission shifts into 1st gear locking up rear tires. nearly rear ended on highway. this has happened 4 times in last 3 weeks no trouble code came up in vehicle. i am concerned for the safety of my family and i in this vehicle. this has happened both on the highway and city streets.

Speedometer, odometer, cruise control, blinker control, and transmission shifting quits working. believe it's the transmission lead frame causing the problem like in the 2011 and 2012 f150's.

Transmission started randomly shifting. in one case it went from 6th gear to 1st and locked up the wheels. obviously this occurs when car is moving and shifting. lead frame of the transmission is what was defective. the problem occurred with 93000 miles on the odometer. 6th to 1st shift at speed and locking up the wheels is deadly.

While traveling at 50-60mph the speedometer drops to 0 and the transmission slams down to first gear and then shoots right back up to sixth gear. it happened on several occasions while driving on the freeway and state highways. on one occasion the speedometer stayed at zero even though i was still traveling at 45-50 mph and the transmission was stuck in 5th gear. even when i pulled over and put the car into park it was still telling me it was in 5th gear. this condition is very scary especially when traveling at a fairly high rate of speed. i can't imagine what might have happened if i was towing my boat when this sudden down shift occurred. my two youngest children were in the vehicle with me on the most recent occurrence, which made the situation more nerve racking. my dealer diagnosed it as a faulty output speed sensor on the transmission lead frame. i know there is a recall for ford f150's 2011 and 2012 model years with this same exact issue. i think this recall needs to be expanded to 2013 models as the same thing is still occurring in this model year. i have a video of two occurrences if you would want me to submit it but it looks like i can only upload pictures.

A drastic shift from 5th gear down to 1st &/or a reduction in speed brought about by braking, without a corresponding downshift. so you either get slammed forward by sudden downshift, or creep through an intersection in 5th gear. this has happened numerous times in the past couple of months.

While driving on a highway at approximately 55mph, a transmission line apparently failed without warning due to rust through. the vehicle immediately started smoking due to the fluid contacting the exhaust. the truck started to hesitate and within seconds dropped to 15 mph. i was able to pull off of the highway without further incident. the vehicle has just over 72,000 miles. the dealer told me that this is a very common problem and ford will not warrant this issue. i was also told that this was so common, the replacement parts are on backorder through ford. the truck is still in the shop waiting on parts.

Hard shift down from higher to lower gears while driving. transmission is an automatic and truck will be going 40-60 mph and all of a sudden downshift to 1st gear, causing rapid decline is speed, tires to lock up, and truck will go into "limp" mode. you will have to turn the truck off an on and let it sit for a while for it to clear out. at the same time the gauge panel will go crazy and start jumping up and down in speed and rpm. when fixed they charged for a gasket, oil, connector, screen asy, trans kit, and oil. the notes from dealership are: r+r valvebody, overhaul valvebody and replace internal harness, new filter and gasket, refill trans. approximate cost $1400.00

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. while driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle downshifted from fourth gear to first gear and the rear wheels seized. the contact had to pull over to the shoulder and turn off the vehicle. after approximately two minutes, the vehicle was restarted and operated normally. the contact also stated that the failure occurred on a daily basis for two weeks. the vehicle was taken to the dealer (future ford of sacramento, 4625 madison ave., sacramento, california, (916) 547-2285) for diagnostic testing, but the results were unknown. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 83,200.

Sporadic shifting. transmission and/or oil pressure causes the truck to completly shut down on me when driving down the highway.

Truck shifts into low gear at higher rates of speed and all gauges shut off, its a 720 code, output speed sensor circuit, ford had a recall that went to march of 2012 and mine was built in october and not covered under the recall, this is a safety issue and you could loose control at anytime when it start to down shift when going 70mph

Vehicle was in motion on the highway traveling at 65-70 mph. speedometer stops functioning and indicates 0 mph. odometer indicates a series of dashes "-------". the transmission speed remains at constant rpm regardless of pressure applied to throttle. indicator for powertrain malfunction/reduced power/electronic throttle control momentarily appears. driver applies pressure to throttle and hears the engine response, but there's no apparent response in the drivetrain. drive coasts off highway and shifts from neutral back into drive. is able to get back into a gear. turning the vehicle off and restarting seems to correct the issue temporarily.

Transmission would downshift for no reason. also sometimes it would try to start off in the wrong gear. turning the engine off and on resets the issues, but it come back. dealer fixed the issue, around $1000.

Vehicle experiences hard downshift from higher to lower gears while driving at highway speeds on interstate highway, causing rear wheels to skid and vehicle to jerk. vehicle looses power with rpm indicator on dash showing engine revving at or above 1,500 to 2,500 rpms while driving on local roads and streets. when starting from a stopped position the engine rpms will climb to 1,500 to 2,000 and the vehicle will no move. the wrench indicator has come on 3 times but goes off if vehicle is shut off and restarted. additionally, the vehicle electronic control system does not store any codes to indicate the vehicle has experienced any problems. have taken vehicle to local ford dealer on 4 occasions only to be informed that no codes were present and vehicle did not act up while in their possession. also informed by dealer that unless code is displayed during diagnostic test ford motor will not pay for repairs unless code is displayed.

Once the truck is idling, after a few moments a wrench logo is displayed and all the tach gauges turn off and the acceleration is sluggish. sometimes when driving the truck doesn't leave 1st gear or it'll bounce around gears. when the truck is turned off and then turned back on, everything can go right back to nornal. having this issue is a major safety issue if the vehicle stalls in traffic or worse. many reports are made on the internet's and i haven't seen a recall. funny how the 2011-12 models have an oasis on it but not the 2013 granted it's plagued by the same issue.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. while driving 55 mph, the vehicle would downshift into a lower gear and slow down. the rpms increased and the contact was concerned that the engine would blow a rod. the vehicle was taken to the dealer (watertown ford chrysler, 1600 9th avenue se, watertown, sd 57201, (605) 886-5844) who offered to repair the vehicle at the contact's expense. the repairs were not completed and the cause of the failure was not disclosed. the manufacturer was contacted and stated that the vehicle was not covered by any recall. the failure mileage and vin were not available. **tr *tr

Truck shifts into first gear from fourth and fifth gears and back wheels lock up has happened several times in the past few weeks

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. while driving 70 mph, the gear shifted into first gear without warning. the contact had to turn the vehicle off and back on for it to operate normally. the vehicle was taken to strieter lincoln motor company (520 w kimberly rd, davenport, ia 52806, (563) 391-1500) where it was diagnosed, but the dealer stated that the vehicle was out of warranty. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 56,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. while driving 50 mph, the gears shifted without warning and caused the rear tires to seize. the vehicle was taken to the dealer (charlie henderson ford inc, 105 u s 90, waveland, ms 39576, (228)-467-9005) for diagnostic testing, but no errors were found. the contact stated that the failure continued. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 68,000. **tr *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. while driving approximately 60 mph, the vehicle downshifted on its own. the contact continued driving to a complete stop due to heavy traffic. the contact switched into neutral and turned off the vehicle. the vehicle was turned off, restarted, and operated normally. the contact stated that the same failure occurred previously and the yellow wrench warning indicator illuminated. the contact turned the vehicle off and restarted it again. the dealer and an independent mechanic were not contacted. the manufacturer was made aware of the failures. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 55,000. *tt

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. while driving 45 mph, the engine made an abnormal noise, the rpms increased, and the vehicle decelerated rapidly and almost came to a complete stop. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was approximately 81,000. *tt*jb

Transmission randomly downshifts while driving, causing wheel lockup and unsafe condition

Truck would drop out of gear while driving, and most gauges stopping working when this happened. happened 3 times before i got a repair. 2 of those times were at about 30-35 mph and the transmission came out of 4th or 5th and jumped into 1st gear, throwing the truck around a bit. i happened to be slowing down each of those times and it didn't become a safety concern. the 3rd time was at least 60 mph on a freeway, but this time the transmission luckily stayed in neutral, and i coasted to a stop at the side of the freeway. this time gave a dtc of p07022. i shut off the engine and everything worked ok after restarting. this is when i stopped driving this truck until i could get it repaired. took to dealer, they replaced the lead frame connector, but not the entire lead frame. shifting has been a little weird after that, i may have to take it in again.

Sudden downshift into 1st gear at highway speeds. speedometer and digital display stops working.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 f-150. while driving 35 mph in third gear, the vehicle gear unexpectedly shifted to fifth gear and then to first gear with the power train warning indicator illuminated. the contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road and turned the vehicle off. once the vehicle was restarted, it operated normally. the contact also mentioned that the failure occurred periodically. the vehicle was taken to tom's ford (200 nj-35, keyport, nj 07735, (732) 264-1600), but the cause of the failure could not be determined. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 103,000.

At highway speeds mph drops to zero transmission shifts to 5th gear airbag and seatbelt lights come on. to reset truck must be stopped turned off and restarted. other times speedometer is erratic and transmission shifted erratic also even to first gear at hwy speeds.

I was driving roughly 30 mph down a residential street with some loose rocks (due to a recent storm) when my f150 suddenly dropped into first gear causing my rear wheels to lock and slide a bit. i was going straight and there was nothing out of the ordinary going on.

Truck was having issues with randomly disengaging from cruise control, loss of power from a stop, and erratic downshifting. on the highway the cruise control would disengage, speedometer would go to 0 then back to its actual speed. from a stop sign/stop light, when the light would turn green the truck would spit and sputter, shifting erratically, rpm would go up but no power. when cruising around 45mph truck downshifted for no reason causing a loud clunking sound, this happened twice consecutively. took is to simmons rockwell to get it diagnosed, after i had already researched the issue and knew what it was, and they replaced the molded lead frame in the transmission. this was exactly the issue they had that caused the recall on the 2011/2012 models. the repair cost was @ $500. i was just reading an article which stated that the nhtsa may order another recall which would include the 2013 model.

My truck had 3 separate incidences, the first two times the truck would downshift without warning and the tachometer would jump around sporadically while the truck lurched. the third incident would be that taking off from a cold start the vehicle would start out in 5th gear and the speedometer would not move from 0.

I have file with you about this before and it has been a recall for this problem but the ford company has not taken care of this problem nor have they taken care of a second recall for another problem with this truck both of these problems together have almost cause 3 very near accidents for me the most recent i was pulling a trailer and entering and on ramp to interstate i-94 on entering as normal i tried to exhilarate to highway speed when all of a sudden all power to the drive train stopped and the truck went into a natural mode (like pushing the clutch in on a standard shift transmission) at that point i was in the drive lane right side but 2 semis one passing the other were barrowing down on me i had to cut sharply to the right and off the shoulder of the highway to keep from being hit buy one of the semi's the ford company stated they would have the parts and the soft wear to fix this problem by the 2nd quarter of 2019 it is now the second half and the problem continues to get worse it now clucks when shifting up from 3 to 4 and sometimes down shifting and when taken your foot off the gas pedal for a few seconds then then push on the gas pedal again the trans will clunk again when i test drove this truck before i bought it i told them there was something wrong with the drivetrain and they told me there was nothing wrong with it that i needed to learn how to drive a six speed transmission the thing about that and they don't know me before i retired i was the floor and operations manager for the community garage of battle creek mich. i have had this truck in to them 2 different times and 2 different dealerships plus i.ve taken it in 3 other times but after making and appointment and telling them i would need a loner which the warranty covers then when i get there no loner plus i would have to pay a $100 fee on the warranty for the thing they never fixed (19v-075)
