Problems with 2013 Ford F-150 POWER TRAIN

On average, the 2013 Ford F-150 starts to “feel” problems with the POWER TRAIN and its various aspects after 77 832 miles.

Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2013 Ford F-150

Transmission would shift on its own erratically. while travelling in 6th gear at 70 mph it would downshift to 1st locking tires briefly and then back to speed after letting off the pedal. the instrument panel would go blank and the needles would stop working while still moving. it cant be duplicated and does it without warning. it had done it at various speeds once it was in 5th or 6th gear with or without the cruise control on. several times and it would not even turn the "check engine" light on. would have a wrench with ok button. was getting on highway during one occasion and it lost power almost causing a merge collision due to i couldn't accelerate. i limped it off the side off road, shut it down, restarted and then was able to take off again. i just had it repaired and now seems to be working as i have tried many situations nervously awaiting it to fail if it is the fix. the lead frame in transmission was replaced. this was a recall issue for the 2011-2012 models and should be the same for 2013 or any model with this design. it causes very dangerous situations and could be fatal in certain traffic situations. i physically watched cars back off me while travelling 60 mph and my tires must have smoke without brake lights when it shifted down and chirped the tires unexpectedly. not happy since i only have couple months on these new tires as well. the transmission always seemed to have a hard shift point between 4,5 and 6th gear.

Sudden momentary downshift at about 50 mph while cruising in town. the vehicle rear tires skid momentarily. the vehicle quickly recovered & drove normally. this is the second occurrence in two weeks.

While accelerating at highway speeds, the throttle suddenly went dead and an orange wrench appeared on the dash. i was able to maneuver the truck to the side of the road and shut it off. when it restarted i was able to drive home. the dealer was not able to find any codes. dealer would not repair under warranty without a code. ford referred me back to the dealer. this is unsafe and apparently is a faulty electronic throttle body.

Transmission would slip out of gear periodically. dash would also reset.

Experience an intermittent loss of the transmission output. depending on vehicle speed at the time of the downshift, an unintended downshift into first gear may occur causing the rear tires to slide or lock up until the vehicle slows. this may result in a loss of vehicle control without warning, increasing the risk of a crash. code p0731 when the code p0731 is set in the powertrain computer, it means that the powertrain computer or pcm is seeing greater than a specified rpm difference between the rotational speed of the input rpm sensor and the transmission output rpm sensor in gear 1.code p0732 when the code p0732 is set in the powertrain computer, it means that the powertrain computer or pcm is seeing a greater than a specified rpm difference between the rotational speed of the input rpm sensor and the transmission output rpm sensor when the vehicle is in 2nd gear.code p0733 when the code p0733 is set in the powertrain computer, it means that the powertrain computer or pcm is seeing a greater than a specified rpm difference between the rotational speed of the input rpm sensor and the transmission output rpm sensor when the vehicle is in 3rd gear.

While driving the truck at various speeds the transmission will drop down in gears and show a wrench and code p0720. the truck will slow down dramatically with no warning or or brake lights. the code shows output shaft speed sensor. the vehicle does this out of the blue at anytime. at speeds of 30mph and up. we have narrowly avoided several accidents. the truck is to unsafe to drive on highway.

An unexpected downshift to first gear causes truck to slow down without warning while in motion

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. the contact stated that the vehicle downshifted independently to first gear at 25 mph and jerk violently. the contact depressed the brake pedal to control the vehicle. there was no warning indicator illuminated. the contact stated that the failure recurred four times on the highway. the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 19v075000 (power train) however, the part needed for the repair was not available. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the contact called autoserv ford of tilton dealer, located at 40 e main st lot b, tilton, nh 03276, (603) 729-1166, to schedule an appointment and was informed that the part was not available. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 77,000. part distribution disconnects.

Vehicle down shifted into first gear causing the wheels to lock up.i was doing 75 mph on the highway

2013 f-150 with 6r80 transmission problems. (1) on 8/17/2015 took truck in to dealer at 40,000 miles due to erratic shifting and shudder, no available error codes. they performed a reprogramming and said a tire was out of balance. problem seemed to get better, but still exhibited slight shudder and occasional bump at highway speeds. this malfunction was reported to ford (2) on 01/24/2018 (mileage 77,000), truck shifted independently to first gear at approx. 65mph, causing sudden speed decrease and momentary loss of control. rear end collision narrowly avoided. large orange wrench light on dash. rpm's near redline while pulling over to shoulder. restarted and functionality was restored, warning lights & code no longer available. took to ford dealer, they could not diagnose without code, recommended new battery. problem seemed like glitch, although would sometimes shift into 5th gear in parking lots. (3) on 11/08/2018 (mileage 84,000), turning left across highway, truck lost all power in oncoming traffic. collision narrowly avoided. no warning lights or codes, restarted truck in intersection and functionality restored. while pulling into parking lot at 5-10mph, truck indicates it is in 5th gear. restarted, was able to drive remaining 2 miles home without issue. again, no codes available, but extremely unsafe. will be towing back to dealer on 11/12/2018 and reporting these issues to ford once again. symptoms are identical to molded lead frame output shaft sensor issues addressed in 2016 ford recall, this is an incredibly unsafe condition and recall should be extended to include 6r80 transmission in the 2013 model year!

I was driving down the i5 freeway in orange county ca around 6:45 pm doing approximately 65-70 mph, suddenly my truck downshifted into first gear causing me to start fish tailing and almost flipped over. my engine then went into a full rev, redlining. i was able to get over to the side of the road. where i had my truck towed to the dealer.

My 2013 ford f-150 shifted into first gear while traveling at 55 mph. i almost lost control of the truck. i took it to the dealer and they want to replace a module in the transmission that cost $1200. i did some research and found that ford has recalled other vehicles with the same problem but not mine. i called ford and they didn't seem to care. i don't know what to do but this is a major safety issue. how can i get ford to recall my truck?

Downshifts unexpectedly while driving 30-35mph and coasting on city street.

Date 11/9/2018 vehicle: ford f150 2013 driver: experienced miles: 148,653 date of incident: 11/1/2018 location: south bound on i-275 in southeast, mi road condition: dry driver was on the highway going 73 mph in the left lane passing a semi when the vehicle shifted from 6th gear instantly into 1st gear. causing the vehicles rear end to lock up and throw the vehicle sideways. driver was facing the side of the tractor trailer head on now while the rear end was bouncing off of the rumple strips. the motor was well over 6800 rpms causing the tac to bounce between 6500 and 7000rpm. not only did this put a lot of stress on the motor and turbo, this also shocked all of the driveline components. a shift like this is commonly referred to as a "money shift" because it destroys an entire driveline as well as the motor. luckily the vehicles driveline was still intact after this harsh downshift and the driver was able to throw the truck into manual mod shift the truck back up to 5th gear and counter steer 2-3 times to correct from the tail end kicking out. the driver believes that an average driver would have died in this same situation. the driver feels lucky to be alive after experiencing this. after the driver pulled the truck into the nearest ford dealer and explained what happened they told the driver that they have not heard of this problem before and that they wouldn't be able to look at the vehicle for at least a week. the drive then called ford to report the issue and on three separate calls on 11/1/2018 ford told the driver that they will not cover the problem, because it's not a re-call. the driver would greatly appreciate it if the nhtsa can open an investigating into the 2013+ models of the f150's transmission suddenly shifting from 6th to 1st gear. this is a very deadly malfunction especially with icy roads just around the corner in mi.

Unexpected transmission downshifts to 1st gear occurring.my 2013 ford f-150 v6 automatic transmission is jumping, gets stuck in the first gear. have to put the vehicle in park and then sometimes shut it off and turn it back on. it also sticks in fifth gear from a dead stop.

Traveling approximately 75 mph on straight, level highway, automatic transmission was in 6th gear (highest gear), suddenly automatic transmission downshifted into much lower gear with no action taken on my part. transmission was subsequently ruined and had to be replaced.

When driving down the road, the truck lost speedometer reading and automatic transmission began shifting erratically. tranmission shift lever was moved to manual with no change in behavior. this resulted in an unsafe emergency stop on the side of the road during heavy traffic conditions. condition reset only after truck was turned off and back on. problem repeated itself on drive to dealership. dealership determined it was transmission lead frame and replaced it. was informed that my truck build date was just outside of the recalled date window so i paid the $870 for the repair.

My auto transmission down shifts into first gear while driving. it locks up the wheels and is potentially very dangerous. ford had a recall for 2011 and 2012 f-150's with this exact problem (recall #16s19), but they said it does not apply to my truck.that is wrong and it should apply to my truck because the recall identifies the exact problem. it is the "powertrain control module/transmission software update". it happens randomly and at speeds between 25 and 45 mph.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. while driving approximately 50 mph, the vehicle automatically shifted into first gear without warning. the vehicle was taken to academy ford (877-894-4901, located at 13401 baltimore ave, laurel, md 20707) where it was diagnosed that the lead frame connector needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to nhtsa. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 113,000.

We took our ford f150 in for erratic downshifting, were able to provide photographic evidence of the problem, but because no error codes are popping up and they can't replicate the problem they are returning out vehicle to us. my issue is ford knows this is an issue and knows the fix is to update the software then look for error codes, but they are acting as they have no idea this is a known problem amongst the 2011-2013 models and they are sending the unfixed car back home to be a safety hazard not only to my family but the families on the road around us.

Driving down interstate and truck suddenly shifted to 3rd gear locking up my tires. thank god i didn't lose control and drove off the road to a stop. turned off truck and back on. drove ok for a bit. will keep dropping gears or randomly shifting up and down. from a start it could sometime try to go into 5th. at times all the dash indicators flash and go to dashes.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. the contact stated that the transmission downshifted while traveling 50 mph and upshifted while the vehicle was at a complete stop. when the transmission downshifted, the contact would have to pull over, restart the vehicle, and correct the gear; however, the failure would recur. don hattan ford (10004 us-54, augusta, ks 67010, (316) 775-3673) was unaware of the failures and stated that the vehicle was not included in a recall. the manufacturer had not been contacted. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 134,000. the vin was unknown.

In october transmission had a couple of hard shifts. *dt

Continuing to experience problems with downshifting. took to ford dealership, the acted like they had no idea what was going on or hadn't even heard of the recall of the 2011 or 2012 models and the open investigation into the 2013. now for a third time, driving on sat. oct. 20, the vehicle shifted into 5th speedometer fell to zero hand had to shut off and restart car to get it going again. driving in a rural area with speed limits of 45-55 mph. i was traveling around 50mph at the time. we are very frustrated as this has happened with kids in the car 2 times now and we don't want them killed due to ford's inability to take responsibility and recall the 2013 models. we have submitted documentation via cell phone picture that is time stamped with my husbands watch in the picture to verify when it is happening.

Vehicle experienced erratic shifting when at speed on the highway and when accelerating from a stop on multiple occasions. speedometer, gear display and other dashboard indicators stop functioning when it happens. transmission may stick in 3rd gear depending on current speed when it happens and in some cases the wrench icon shows on the digital display. stopping and restarting vehicle usually makes it go back to normal temporarily. local dealer diagnosed the problem as the transmission lead frame connector and replaced but cost was not covered current 2011-2012 recall.

I had filed a complaint earlier this week, but yesterday, it happened again. driving the ford f150 2013 on city streets (rural area, speed limits vary between 45 and 55 mph) and the truck slipped and shifted erratically between a few gears for a few seconds. the entire family was in the car including 3 kids. then later the same day on route 3 in the sunbury ohio the car is in 5th gear speedometer reading zero suddenly. route 3 varies between 50 and 55 mph and my truck was going in this range at the time it dropped to zero. only one in car at the time so i captured it on photo reading 5th gear and 0mph uploaded below/

When on interstate 76 my truck had abrupt shifting and loosing control of transmission, speedometer, odometer when reaching it apears it could be the molded lead frame. after shutting down and restarting it fixed itself then later it occurred again while on rt 267 in the center lane the truck locked into first gear during high traffic and i barely made it to the shoulder of the roadway (pennsylvania)

I was driving my f150 when i come to a stop light. once the light turned green i accelerated and got to speed (55mph) when the truck suddenly downshifts to 1st. i pulled over put in park and turned off. started again and worked fine. later that day the truck did it again. this time i was on the highway at 60mph when it shifted down to 1st. pulled over and went to take off and it started in second then jumped to 5th and wouldn't shift. i couldn't take off in 5th so i put in park turned off and waited 10mins before starting again. it worked fine after. this is very scary.

Vehicle on occasion downshifts unexpectedly. the vehicle is in motion typically above 50mph and suddenly downshifts to 1st. not on highway but on a 4 lane road with speed limit around 55mph. happened while picking my preschooler (3yo) up, very scary and not acceptable especially since there was already a reacall for 2011 and 2012 models with the same transmission and problems.

Either i start from being stopped and it immediately goes to 3rd or 5th gear or it will drop to a low gear when i'm going highway speed. if i put it in park it fixes problem but is very scary when it happens, especially when going fast or starting from a stop and crossing at an intersection in traffic. this seems to happen 2-3 times a week. no code when brought to the dealer. once a yellow wrench has game on and whole dash went blank.

Lead frame failed. caused vehicle to downshift suddenly while speedometer read very low. multiple times. at highway speed in full auto or in manual gear shift override. the vehicle would downshift at 65mph to 2nd or 1st gear, locking up the rear axle. cost to repair at dealership was $810.61

With 58,000 miles on 3.5 ecoboost -check engine light went on with error codes p0016 and p0299. ford dealer advised timing chain stretched and needed to be replaced at cost of $2500. less then 10 miles after picking truck up from repairs - check engine light on with p0299 code again. back into shop.

Took vehicle out of garage after warm up and while accelerating to 55 mph the transmission went into neutral. i let off the accelerator and the transmission shifted down into a much lower gear. at first i thought the brakes had locked up and pulled over to the side. i put the truck in park and went out to see if i had a smoking brake. nothing looked wrong so i got back in and started to pull away from the curb and the vehicle went into neutral the shifted into a higher gear then into a lower gear. i let off the accelerator and put it into neutral then tried drive again. the erratic shifting continued for about 5 miles then seemed to work correctly. the next day i attempted to bring it to work to get it looked at and the same situation occurred except the vehicle then downshifted to 1st and would not come out. i stopped shut the truck off and started again and was able to get the vehicle to a dealer with the erratic shifting into lower gears for 30 miles. i have the paperwork from the ford dealer showing me it was the molded lead frame failed and a connector #al3z-7g276-d, connector# 6l2z-7g276-aa. total cost $1292.94

While traveling 40 mph my 2013 ford f150 (32,000 miles) suddenly downshifts into 1st gear. the rear wheels lock up leaving skid marks on road. the speedometer shuts down as well as others on instrument cluster. the truck jumps out of control. i have to shut it off and restart to move it. i called for a flatbed tow truck and it is now at a ford dealer. i have seen hundreds of complaints about this and crashes. ford has had this problem and needs to step up and recall this before someone gets killed. this is very dangerous. i had another technician drive my truck for a second opinion. it did the same thing for him. he told me do not drive this truck it is too dangerous. please do something!

While driving the speedometer will go from the current mph whether than is 10mph or 50mph and instantly drop to 0mph. the truck will then downshift to 1st gear and violently throw you forward in the vehicle. ford has a tsb out on this: 13-6-8. the tsb applies to 2011 - 2013 f150s. the 2011-2012 were recalled, but for some reason the 2013 was not.

Transmission - molded leadframe malfunction on 5.0 motor. the 2011-2012 recall for the molded leadframe malfunction also affects 2013 vehicles such as ours leading to the truck loosing power, stalling out, shifting on it's own from 5th to 1st and the other way leaving the truck a wreck waiting to happen at any time during driving. this risks the lives of the driver, passengers and everyone else on the road. when this happens you must bring the vehicle to a complete stop, shut it off, wait for computer to cycle, then restart. ford should be expanding the recall to replace this deadly malfunctioning part at their cost. this has happened at least 10 times within 30 days of owning the vehicle which was bought from maxwell ford in austin texas. the last time this happened it was in a parking lot after just starting the truck and backing out of a stall.

My 2013 ford f150 is stalling at at any speed, and the wrench icon appears on the dashboard. sometimes the engine icon also appears when this happens. it's off and on. the engine light does not stay on. i took it in for a checkup, and they said fuel system needs cleaning. also, my transmission has started jumping at low speeds, and reduces the vehicle to and absolute crawl....less than 5mph. it's not a high speed problem...just at lights ,complete stops and stop and go driving/traffic.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. the contact stated that within a year of owning the vehicle, the gear was in drive and independently downshifted while driving 70 mph or higher. the failure caused the speed to drastically reduce and potentially cause a crash. the contact had to quickly and cautiously coast the vehicle over to the side of the road. the vehicle was turned off and restarted. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa action number: rq17010 (power train) although the intermittent failure was identical. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 90,000.

While driving on expressway gear when from 6th gear to 1st gear then a orange wrench came up on the screen i almost caused and accident & this has happened times before on the street

Three times in the last two months this has happened to me. while accelerating from a stop on a city street the truck will jerk forward and backward chirping the tires like it's slipping gears. while this is happening if i give it gas either it won't rev up or it will rev up but not accelerate almost like it's in neutral. also, the speedometer drops down to zero and bounces up and down even while the truck is moving when this happens. my wife refuses to drive the vehicle until the problem is corrected and quite frankly i don't feel safe driving it either. i find it terrible that ford has not included the 2013 vehicles into the recall of the earlier models suffering from the same defects.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. while driving at low speeds from a stop sign and turning left, the transmission shifted into fifth gear without warning. the vehicle was taken to rick ridings ford (1817 ridings dr, monticello, il 61856, (800) 774-2521) where it was diagnosed that the lead frame needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 17,266.

Unexpectedly downshifting into first gear when at speeds of 40 mph. then sudden upshift to fourth than in limb mode. found also that the transmission quick connect was leaking and lost all transmission fluid and no warning lights to let me know that all the fluid was missing. ford told me that i required a new transmission but it took them a week to notice that transmission fluid was missing. they told me that they tighten up the quick connect and the leak may stop. well, a day later still have the problem of upshifting and downshift at 3rd to fourth. all the fluid was missing again no warning lights. i replace lines and fuild and the upshift and down shift is gone but now have grinding of the thrid and fourth gear.

Normal driving about 40 mph, then sudden down shift. speedo to 0 while tach revs and all other gauges quit. i see a recall on 2012 raptors involving lead frame replacement and pcm reset. mine has the same tranny as recalled. happened yesterday once while i drove and 4 times today while wife drove. she was almost rear-ended.

Vehicle was stopped in the left turn lane. when the green arrow appeared, pressure was applied to the accelerator. the vehicle began to move at a rate that was not normal for what the tachometer was reading. the vehicle then jolted suddenly as if the 1st gear had engaged. this was shortly followed by the vehicle losing road speed. it seemed that 5th gear had been engaged. the seatbelt caution and wrench symbol came on. the speedometer dropped to 0. i was able to move the vehicle out of traffic lanes, but it was slow because the transmission was not in first gear. putting the vehicle into neutral and back to drive did not fix the problem. once stopped, i shutdown the vehicle and waited 30 seconds before restarting the vehicle. this seemed to fix the issue. the check engine light will not go on for this failure. i have contacted ford dealerships who are unable to diagnose the issue unless there is an associated check engine light and code that can be retrieved from the onboard computer. this is a safety issue because a powertrain failure while in traffic can lead to a vehicle being unable to clear an intersection if there's oncoming cross traffic. i request that nhtsa investigate f150 model year 2013 for this issue with the erratic shifting in the automatic transmission at low speeds.

Automatic transmission problem. twice while traveling on the highway in 6th gear at greater than 65 mph the vehicle shifted from 6th to 4th gear for no apparent reason which caused the tires to squeal and the entire vehicle jerk and slow significantly. no warning or error or warning lights were illuminated. five other times while traveling at about 15 mph the automatic transmission controls attempted to shift from 2nd gear to 5th gear which significantly bogged the vehicle down and almost stalled. ford error code p0722, obd-ii trouble code associated with the transmission output speed sensor came in. the vehicle was serviced and it was determined the molded lead frame connector was defective and needed replaced.

While driving on the freeway at 55 miles an hour, my transmission shifted from 4th gear to 1st gear with no reason.

Eratic downshifting, transmission sometime would shift to a low gear while at highway speeds, causing tires to lock up. vehicle also would get stuck in high gear making acceleration from a stop in an active roadway impossible as car would not move

While traveling in 4th gear, the vehicle suddenly went into 1st gear. it would not go out of 1st gear until i shut it off and restarted. happened again before i got it home. dealer replaced the lead frame harness, cost $1025.00. this could have resulted in a serious accident. vehicle had 60844 miles on odometer.

19s07 transmission downshifting from 6th to 1st. i experienced the exact symptoms for the recall. i took the truck to the dealer lou fusz they told me that it was a tranmission sensor and stated it would be over $900 to fix it. the work was performed and the truck has not done it since. i received the notice and called ford and they are denying the claim to reimburse for the repairs that were made because the truck had done the downshift more than 10 times. the last time was the only time ford dealer told me they found the solution. this is not been handled correctly and i am not wanting to take the truck back on the highway after going from 70 mph down to 1st gear locking up the truck and sliding.

While traveling at 55 mph the truck shifted from 6 to 3rd gear locking up the rear end. i was able to pull over and noticed the speedometer was not operating. i turned the vehicle off and functionality returned.
