We have classified the 56 complaints from 2005 Ford F-150 about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact stated that the vehicle's frame was corroded, which caused the transmission line to become defective. the contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic where the transmission line was replaced. the contact was informed by the mechanic that, due to the corrosion, other parts of the vehicle could become defective. the manufacturer and dealer were not notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 95,000.
Transmission clunks. truck stalls in traffic because of throttle body problems. it has been an on going problem over the past several years.
My 2005 f150 has an electronic switch to engage the 4 wheel drive. it has stopped working all together. i've researched the problem and have discovered that this is a common problem for this model from 2004 on up. i nearly crashed while driving after a snow storm due to the 4 wheel drive being inactive.
Will not go in reverse
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. while at a stop, the vehicle shook and did not accelerate. in addition, the transmission warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to bill knight ford of stillwater (4405 w 6th ave, stillwater, ok 74074, 405-372-7144) and the computer system was updated; however, the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
My 2005 ford f150 truck has had so many problems & some replace twice & im over it im about to have a heart attack now it sounds like my aculator again with the sound of metal scraping on the ground and when i switch it to 44 the sounds stops .but if its not in 44 the sound stays and it is loud ! i have spent so much get my truck fixed and what upsets me is i take care of my truck change oil spark plugs everything since purchased in 2005 brand new and im over it something needs to done with all these parts defected and it will continue until something is done.
Trans fault error
New trans needed, common on most f150. overdrive light flashes and won't shift out of first gear
I needed a new transmission last year. just blew out of no where. this year alone i needed new hubs, all8 cylinders have a miss fire my truck dropped from 60 to ten in seconds so scary
Cpsc;2005 ford f-150 transmission and motor went out at 89446 miles. a diagnostic was performed. *bf the consumer stated after the transmission was replaced, the vehicles performance was not indicative of having been at a repair shop. the consumer returned to the dealer and another diagnostic was performed. the consumer was then informed the engine needed to be replaced. it was also determined the initial repairs were completed with salvaged/used parts. *jb
Truck was bought and i replaced all spark plugs and even had to replace a clinoid because was told that was the problem. its not... there is a ball valve in the transmission that keeps the truck from building enough pressure to be able to shift which throws a code and says misfire on 6 been replaced twice now so clearly not the problem. this is a major issue.. truck feels as if fixing to fie then check engine light will come on start flashing but throw no codes and you cant speed back up because it feels like your truck is about to die and you don't want to blow your motor.
My truck has a known issue with the 5.4l's cam phasers. the truck makes a very loud noise and shakes. to repair this, it's around $3,000 and also i have a known issue with all 8 coils which had to be replaced for $1,200 and a known misfire. i do not understand why ford motor is aware of the ongoing issues in this year truck and has not done anything about it. also if the cam phasers are not replaced the engine will blow!
!. vacuum advance control for four wheel drive gets wet, looses pressure and front wheels engage slightly, causing wheel hub damage. 2. steering becomes hard, especially in cold weather. hard to inspect steering shaft until it is disconnected from steering rack. common problem with mid to late 2000's ford crown vic. police vehicles. come on ford, man up and make these problems a recall.
Takata recall at 80,000 miles f150 transmission went out. had it repaired now in less than 12,000 miles gone again.
Metal scraping sound from rear end. mechanic has checked and says pinion, bearings, ring gear have failed. looks like its a common failure. 9.75 ring gear, 3.55 ratio
Rear end shaking while driving down road about 60mph. getting off gas nor putting vehicle in neutral would not stop shaking. had to come to complete stop before starting again to make vehicle drive properly.
I was driving and heard a sound come from my engine compartment. i didn't lose power, but pulled over to look under the hood. not noticing anything obvious i checked the fluid levels and noticed that my transmission fluid was low. it had been checked two months prior during oil change. i had no visible signs of leaks. i found a forum on the internet that talked about transmission fluid going from the transmission to the transfer case, but unable to return. they had a $20 seal replaced under warranty. the forum had stated that this was a known condition but nothing was being done by ford motor company. a mechanic had said that it only effected 17-18% of vehicles manufactured between 2004-2008. i called two local dealerships and they knew the problem but said that there was no recall on it. it takes approximately 3 hours to change, by dropping the transfer case and replacing the seal. i called ford motor company representative and was told that there wasn't a recall and that they couldn't help. i feel that this could result in a premature failure of the transmission and possibly a catastrophic event. i was told by fmc rep that should a recall occur i could take my receipt to a dealership and that they would possibly reimburse me. i don't feel that ford should have a known condition but do nothing to correct it. please look into this for me and others under the same situation.
on the morning of march 5th 2015 i started my truck to warm the inside and also melt the snow off my windshield. i got in the truck and backed out away from house. due to having snow on the driveway i turned on the 4 wheel drive in high. my four wheel drive would not work so i tried to swicth to 2 wheel drive back to four wheel drive but the 4 wheel drive would not turn on. i grabbed the gear shift to put the truck back in park when i noticed my gear shift could float to park to 1st gear freely and would not shift. at this time i noticed smoke starting to come inside cab from under dash and thru the vents. i jumped out and opened the hood. a 1 foot section of a wiring harnes mounted to the firewall had caught fire. i made attempts to put out the fire but within a few seconds the engine compartment was engulfed. in 2 to 3 minutes the entire inside of the cab was also completely on fire. my wife who was watching me immediatly called 911 to get the fire department. after 3 minutes the truck was already a total lose. due to the truck being only 60' from my house and burning so hot i was concerned about my house catching fire. two gentleman from the rescue squad arrived but it was too late for anything to be done. i was able to get a backhoe and put the fire out with snow. unfortunately i had liability insurance only which meant a total lose. i never dreamed that the truck would burn up sitting in my driveway!!!! i know there have been some recalls for f150 due to fire hazards with the cruise control for other year model close to 2005. a vehicle catching fire while its sitting in a driveway running is totally unacceptable. the truck was in excellent shape and had no after market parts or work performed. i have no ideal why the wiring harness caught fire.
I own the above mention vehicle, there was no disclosure to me at the time of purchase of a very serious design flaw with the spark plugs that could and likely will break off in the engine during replacement and the extreme cost in changing these plugs around 900 to 1000 dollars if no plugs break off and even more in the plugs do break off or heads have to removed to extract the plugs even worse pieces of prshell could fall into the engine cylinder and cause engine damage to around 8000 dollars now that i aware of the extreme cost 3 or 4 times the amount for routine maintenance of changing spark plugs in these ford vehicles ford is no help at all saying its not a safety issue i cant help it the design flaw with these long 2 piece plugs is so serious and the price gouging of the consumer for the cost to change spark plugs is so expensive and so bad i strongly feel that the federal gov should step into the matter and help the consumers out and not allow ford to get by with this extreme bad design flaw and the outrageous cost they are charging and the fed gov should force ford to recall all affected vehicles and mandate that ford eat the cost of changing these spark plugs and put in the newly developed plugs that are not prone to become seized to the engine and ford shall do so at no cost to the consumer safety or not it is just unbelievable they can get by with such a serious design flaw with such a high expense to the consumer for something that is supposed to be routine. *tr
I just wanted to add my vehicle to the list of complaints about the differential. mine makes noise and has made noise for quite some time. i thought it might be the tires or rotors. i found out that it was coming directly from the rear differential. based on the complaints i have heard, i am pretty sure this is the same thing. the noise sounds like metal running on metal. i believe this should be something ford should pay to fix. if i have to pay for it, i'm definitely not using ford. i read that's many people have the same complaints. this failure is security public problems, because accidental or crash may occur. *tr
Ford designed the factory spark plugs as a two piece design. once the truck requires a tune up the current spark plugs break in half as they are removed causing an addition cost for extra labor and special tools designed to remove these plugs. i took my truck to the ford dealer who then broke 6 out of 8 plugs upon removal at an extra cost of 80 dollars a piece. the tune up which only includes the removal off the old and the installation of the newly designed one piece spark plugs ended up costing me 1000 dollars. these spark plugs also break inside the engine causing a loss of power and possible damage to the catalytic converter. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 25 mph, the four wheel drive activated independently as a loud abnormal noise emitted from the front of the vehicle. the failure occurred on numerous occasions. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was repaired on numerous occasions but the failure persisted. the repair specifics were not available. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 58,000.
Truck went into "limp" mode on start up. very difficult to get home in traffic. "fix" was new throttle body from flecther ford. $582.38. seems to be an ongoing problem with ford. *tr
I bought a 2005 ford f 150 used not knowing about the engine and rear end problems until i heard the rattle coming from under the hood so i go ask dealer about this problem he said this type engine was from ford was not good lucky for me they were repairing one it had blown a spark plug out and they were replace parts for the cam he said get rid of the truck or run it till it blows up it has no power it stalls in the most bad places i am afraid i am going to have a wreck and hurt some one ford needs to recall these engine and fix the rear end problem also i don't have 5 to 8 grand to fix it. *tr
Vehicle went into 'failsafe mode' and stopped running with no warning. manual said this would allow the vehicle to proceed safely home. did not get far before it would not run. when it did run, it ran at about 2 mph before failing to go any farther. looking on the internet, lots of people have had this occur with various ford vehicles. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact stated that whenever he came to stop, the gears would engage independently and make a loud noise. the vehicle was taken to the dealer several times where the technician diagnosed that the alternator was defective and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. the contact mentioned that he had to replace the alternator a total of four times. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 175,000 and the current mileage was 190,000.
Around midday while driving on a city street, i heard a vibration coming from the underside of the vehicle. i drove a few blocks back to my office and the vehicle sat until i left to go home later that day. a few blocks from my office also while driving on a city street, i heard a louder vibration and this time a metal on metal clanking sound. i immediately pulled off into a parking area and looked under the vehicle to see that the drive shaft had fallen from its center mount. the two piece drive shaft carrier bearing mounting bracket had failed due to corrosion of the mounting bracket causing the drive shaft to no longer be mounted to the frame. fortunately, i was on a city street driving and only driving approximately 20 mph and not at highway speed where i could have loss driver control of the vehicle. less than a year earlier, the vehicle failed a state safety inspection due to an excessively corroded steering shaft u joint. the mechanic said this u joint could fail during driving causing loss of driver control. either of these component part failure could have caused loss of vehicle control, an accident and injury or death to myself, my passengers or others in other vehicles or on or near the roadway. i have had multiple other non life safety mechanical defects with this vehicle but more importantly, this condition exists with many of these vehicles on the roads today and any of those drivers could experience a failure of either the steering shaft or the drive shaft at any time and be the cause of an accident. *tr
I bought my ford-f 150 directly from the ford dealership brand new with only 30 miles in august 2005. by november 2005, we brought it in to the dealership with concerns of the tranny slipping. the dealership could not find the problem, and we went home. with-in 1 yr. we had to replace the power windows, and with-in 2 yrs, the transmission went out completely. luckily it was under warranty, and was replaced. we have replaced every piece in that truck at least once and some several times. and the transmission twice. last month the transmission went out again. we paid $2700. to only bring it home, and immediately it went out again. the mechanic is baffled. he has been trying for 4 weeks to fix it, and has now thrown in the towel. here i have a gorgeous truck, with a huge payment, and it's a piece of junk. we have maintained everything so precisely, never towed, never long trips, and have had all the up keep needed for this truck to last, so our son could take over when he is of age. i don't know what to do! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving approximately 45 mph, the engine rpms increased and the vehicle would not accelerate. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis. the technician stated the transmission would have to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 76,000. *tr
Dash electrical relay issue, paint peeling tailgate, transmission shutter going into overdrive 45 mph. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f150. the contact stated that he shifted into park and exited the vehicle however, it began to roll away in reverse. the contact jumped back in the vehicle and applied the parking brake. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for inspection. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified but provided no assistance. the failure mileage was 115,000.
My fuel control module shorted out which caused my pcm to be erased. it seems to be a common problem after researching it, but no recall has been issued. my pregnant wife was driving my truck and lost all power. this resulted in a near accident due to having no power steering and less brake control. if this is such a common problem with the placement of the control module why has this not been recalled. $1000 later i hope this doesn't happen again. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact stated that the shifter cable detached from the connection in the transmission. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing and the mechanic replaced the shifter cable. the vehicle was repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 60,000.
Yes my 4x4 is not working and i have read over 300 post easy about the same problem people are having. thousands of people are having the same problem i have had with my truck. obviously if there are that many people with the same year of truck and same problem why isn't ford doing a recall? they say the problem is the iwe, solenoid, the problem why it happens in the first place is there isn't a rain cover over the solenoid underneath the hood. i do believe that this is a huge safety hazard and almost caused me to be in an accident about three weeks ago because my four wheel drive went out! ford please do a recall before someone gets hurt or even die! i do believe that ford should be responsible for this issue and have a recall to get these vehicles fixed. *tr
I was coming to a stop when the transmission would not release from gear and then finally did with a loud clunk. when i went to drive forward the engine revved up and then jumped into gear jumping the truck forward. there was no warning for a transmission failure it all of a sudden lost all gears. the mechanic at the ford dealership said it was a known issue to them and that one of the internal seals probably broke and caused a "catastrophic transmission failure." *tt
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact stated that he attempted to accelerate from a stop, but the vehicle would not accelerate and a loud grinding noise was heard coming from the engine. upon examining the vehicle, the contact noticed that the drive shaft was corroded and split in half. the vehicle was towed home and parked. the vehicle was not taken to have the failure diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure and current mileages were 96,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact was driving 60 mph uphill when the engine became hesitant and the transmission would not downshift properly. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for inspection and the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 83,189.
2005 ford f150 truck 4x4 auto transmission experienced mechanical failure with no warning. lost forward low gears. only has 57k miles. truck was always dealership serviced and maintained as recommended. no harsh weather conditions experienced. no heavy towing done. replaced with rebuilt transmission. old part will be made available. *tr
2005 ford f150, 139,000 miles. truck started making grind/buzz noise intermittently and would stop when accelerator was released. took to ford dealer and was told 4wd vacuum switch damaged from water and driver side independent wheel end needed replaced. new switch has water shroud to prevent water damage which would indicate this is a known problem. *tr
This past march, during a heavy snow storm i tried to engage my 4 wheel drive on my 2005 f150 and it wouldn't engage. since then, i've noticed a noise coming from my right front wheel (that's since progressed to my left front wheel). found a tsb #06-8-15 that affects the iwe solenoids on 04-06 f150's. replaced the solenoid, and still have noise. now being told by a ford mechanic that my actuator hubs are probably shot from water getting into the old solenoid and traveling down the vacuum hoses to the hubs. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact stated that the transmission would slip at anytime at speeds around 60 mph. the vehicle had the transmission replaced in march of 2011. the failure recurred on september 8, 2011. the vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred on the september 23,2011. the dealer was in the process of diagnosing the failure. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was unavailable and the current mileage was 84,855.
2005 f150 goes into "fail safe mode" and shuts down while driving. it only occurred once per year starting at 65,000 miles, but now happens every 3-4 weeks at 114,000 miles. once the engine shuts down, i put the transmission into neutral while coasting and it restarts easily. the engine light illuminates for 3-4 days and then turns off. in researching the issue, it seems to be a rather common problem with this vehicle and is usually caused by a faulty throttle body. ford states that they are aware of the problem. *tr
2005 f150 stalled without warning while driving sometimes at highspeed on the highway. it happened very frequently and the check engine light finally came on so i took it to the dealership for repair. i was told that the throttle body would need replacing at approx $750.00 and was told that this is a typical repair for this vehicle. i understand many others have had this issue. prior to repairing i stalled several times in the high speed lane and had to pull over to the left hand of the 4 lane highway which i was fortunate not to be hit. this seems to be a very serious safety issue. *tr
Truck would idle extremely bad, when you cut it off it wouldn't start. this started happening on friday, december 31, 2010. i took the truck to firestone and they run a diagnostic test which at the time did not show the throttle body problem because the "check engine" light was not on at the time. however, firestone replaced the fuel filter, did a tune up and replaced the battery and removed the gas tank to clean it but this still did not resolve the problem and this cost me $369. the truck was then taken to a ford dealership and on the way there the "check engine" light did come on. the dealership advised us after the diagnostic test that we needed a throttle body and electronic egr valve which will cost $1330.00. *tr
On certain model ford vehicles using their 5.4 liter engine (which includes ford/lincoln models) the spark plugs are of a 3 part design which will separate and shoot out of the top of the engine while running causing serious injury or even death and extensive damage to the engine. ford is aware of this problem as i have been told by several service managers but ford refuses to do anything about it because for every vehicle repair is a 1500.00 repair bill for the dealer/ford. for people whom don't have 1500.00 to replace spark plugs which should be a 50.00 repair, they remain at risk. *tr
Original flywheel broken. told will cost $1k to $1,4k to replace that and starter b/c flywheel 'probably' damaged starter. truck won't start sometimes, and grinds when i try to start it. was stranded 2 times and had to be towed. *tr
I own a 2005 ford f150 5.4 automatic w/ 63,000. unexpected failure of transmission caused by, as dealer stated, a degradation of a bearing which came loose and became lodged in side of the transmission. i replied to the ford service manager does this mean that what caused the failure was a defective part, he answered yes and gave me the quote for a new transmission. i have done some research and have found over 6,000 cases of customers with same issue( no towing, proper maintenance intervals and documentation, etc.) yet investigation is being conducted to find solution to the premature failure. talked to 3 nationally known transmission repair facilities and they also have stated numerous problems with the 4r75w and 4r70e/w transmission that ford is installing in its vehicles, primarily with the exact same symptoms. *tr
1) driving down a paved road going about 35 mph. 2) heard a loud bang and then a metal grinding sound. the driveshaft forced its way and busted through the center carrier bearing. it only needs to happen once and it cannot be fixed. the center carrier brearing is snapped. this part holds the driveshaft. without the bearing, the drive shaft will hang down and grind against the pavement and throw it out of balance and damage it. eventually the driveshaft will break in two. then the truck will lose power to the wheels which can cause an accident. 3) the driveshaft from ford is nonserviceable. if any 1 part fails you are buying a complete new driveshaft for upwards of $1,200.00. none of the parts can be replaced. the driveshaft for my truck costs $1200.00 from ford. the center carrier bearing could not be replaced because the bearing is installed before tube was friction welded (bad) in place. the bearing cannot be changed without cutting driveshaft apart, destroying the driveshaft. this part is only $35.00 but you have to buy a complete new driveshaft. i found a company that specializes in driveshafts and makes serviceable driveshafts for ford trucks. i have heard others have this problem so this is a common driveshaft defect with 04-05 ford f-150 trucks. i bought the new driveshaft from http://www.driveshaftspecialist.com f or $725 + installation. this is less than what ford charges but is not something i feel should have to be replaced on a newer truck with this mileage and that is driven very lightly unless there is a defect in design like there is with ford f-150 drive shafts. this is something thiat is supposed to last the lifetime of the truck. *kb
A spark plug blew out of the cylinder head, destroying the coil above it. no hint of any problems prior to blow out. *tr
Limited slip rear differential clutch pack has needed to be replaced three times in 25,000 miles. failure of components causes harsh vibration and control problems in turns and curves. *kb
