We have classified the 52 complaints from 2005 Ford F-150 about VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL into the following categories.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. while reversing at 50 mph, the vehicle accelerated on its own and crashed into the front of one vehicle and the driver's side of another vehicle. the air bags failed to deploy. there were no injuries and a police report was filed. the vehicle was towed from the crash scene to a dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 78,000.
Truck began ticking very loudly, then began a knocking noise, and now the engine shakes the truck when idling. cam phasers broke apart causing damage to the timing chain. sudden loss of power to the engine as well as inability to maintain speed while ascending an incline is frequent. the loss of speed and power has caused us several close-call accidents. truck will simply not accelerate while pressing the gas pedal. additionally, it also feels like the truck cannot catch gears while in motion.
Truck was bought and i replaced all spark plugs and even had to replace a clinoid because was told that was the problem. its not... there is a ball valve in the transmission that keeps the truck from building enough pressure to be able to shift which throws a code and says misfire on 6 been replaced twice now so clearly not the problem. this is a major issue.. truck feels as if fixing to fie then check engine light will come on start flashing but throw no codes and you cant speed back up because it feels like your truck is about to die and you don't want to blow your motor.
Driving on interstate doing 70 mph (in fast lane) when truck stopped/stalled and i guess from research went into "limp mode". i was unable to press the gas pedal, it just shook three times each of which slowed it down incredibly, the check engine light was on and a wrench showed up, but the radio still worked. while trying to pull over almost wrecked (memorial day weekend and i was in fast lane). finally able to pull over to side of road hysterical, shut off and waited a minute and it started. drove rest of way home *100 miles* with check engine light on and abs light on. i am scared to death to drive again. not fun having a vehicle stall/quit whatever on interstate in rush hour traffic.

I purchases a used 2005 ford f150 about 5 months ago. today, feb 28, 2014, i was leaving my neighborhood and my trucks display flashed an message reading "engine failsafe mode". my truck lost all power, no steering and died. luckily i was on surface streets and pulled it over with no power steering and engine dead. the mechanics cannot find the cause and the engine will start but continues to turn off and the vehicle's computer shuts down. online i read of this happening on the freeway at 65 mph. iam now terrified that my truck will shut off on the freeway with my children in the truck with me. this seems to be a life threatening problem. i called a ford dealership and the service dept claimed they never heard of this but can work on it if i bring it in. what is my recourse? thank you. *tr
While driving home truck shut off engine fail safe mode indicator came on engine shut off all functions, brakes power steering. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact stated that the gear was shifted into drive as the brakes were depressed when the vehicle lunged forward abnormally. in addition, the engine rpms increased excessively and without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where the contact was advised that they were unable to diagnose the failure. the manufacturer was contacted and offered no assistance. the failure and current mileages were approximately 106,000.
While approaching a stop during a heavy rain shower i brought the vehicle to a complete stop about 10 feet from the vehicle in front of me. suddenly, the vehicle accelerated forward. i pressed harder on the brake and the vehicle jerked and shuddered violently. my first thought was that i was struck from behind by another vehicle. i was issued a violation from louisiana state police for following too closely. my belief is that the shuddering was the effect of the anti lock brakes activating. the damage to both vehicles was relatively minor. the vehicle was checked for a defect but none could be found.
I was driving on a residential street (gray st. )approaching a busy two lane street that was one way heading south (armenia avenue) in tampa, florida. as i was approaching the stop sign, my foot was on the brake. preparing to stop, but instead of stopping the engine revved and accelerated into the lanes of traffic traveling south. i was standing on the brake so hard that my leg was shaking when i finally stopped. i stopped the vehicle by depressing the emergency brake and the rpm's finally came down and the engine returned to normal. i was so nervous because if there had been cars coming i would have been hit on the driver's side. the street is usually very heavy with traffic. i was very lucky that there was no one close or i may not be writing this today. a few days later i came to the same corner and a bicyclist crossed right in front of me. if this had happened on april 12th, i would have run over the bicyclist. i drove around the block very slowly continuing to stop and rpm's were normal. i really thought everyone would think i was crazy for what had just happened. when the ford dealership found the problem on the computer i was relieved to know that there was a problem that could be fixed. it was the throttle body. a month later our other ford f-150, a 2007, had the same problem and this time my husband was driving it. there was a report on this vehicle also. ford is not recognizing that there is a problem and other vehicles are being brought in for the same issues which could result in serious injury or fatalities to innocent parties due to some defect in the throttle body's on the f-150's. my report number on our 2007 f-150 is 10459967. *tr
On three separate occasions, my ford 2005 f150 king ranch supercrew 4x4 engine suddenly died while driving at approximately 55-60mph. on all three occasions, i fortunately was able to pull over to the side of the road with the engine died and no power steering. if i had not been in the right hand lane and able to pull off of the road, then an rear engine collision would more than likely occurred if i would have been in an outer lane of a multiple lane highway. after the third occasion this past week, i took the vehicle to the ford dealership in rockwall, texas where it cost me $700.00 to have throttle body/motor assembly replaced. my obd readings at home were p2104 and p2112. if not already, this issue is a fatally waiting to happen. lots of chatter on internet of similar issues. *tr
Warning light: engine fail safe on i was forced to coast to a stop and turn off the vehicle. i restarted the vehicle clearing the warning and continued on. i took the vehicle to a local ford dealer where it was determined i needed to replace the throttle body and throttle position sensor.
The brake lights stopped working and the speed control brake pedal disconnect stopped working. speed control disconnect was achieved by using the steering wheel control but if the stopping situation had been an emergency one, an accident could have resulted as there was about a 1.5 second delay for me to figure out what was going on and correct the situation. while traveling at 70mph on i-10 with the speed control engaged, i went to exit the highway to get fuel and while depressing the brake pedal to reduce speed, the speed control began attempting to resume the original 70mph speed by revving the engine. later i determined that the alternator on the vehicle had failed and while the battery had enough voltage to keep the engine running and the voltage gauge had not moved yet, the battery did not have a full 12.5v output. when the brake pedal sensor does not have a full charging voltage input, it seems to stop working. therefore, the speed control disconnect failed and the brake lights failed to activate even though the motor and other components continued functioning normally. it seems that the brake pedal sensor is very voltage dependent (which was not the case on other vehicles i have owned). i notified ford of the situation after the incident occurred and have received nothing in response. i got rid of the vehicle and purchased a different one as i believe it is not safe and could result in traffic tickets/accidents (no brake lights) and speed control disconnect failures (accidents) if there are voltage fluctuations in the electrical system. *tr
At a stop with my foot on the brake the truck lunged forward. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f 150 fx. the contact was driving 45 mph when the electronic throttle control lamp illuminated and the vehicle began to decelerate independently. the contact attempted to accelerate but the vehicle would not respond. the vehicle then stalled but was ale to be restarted yet the failure recurred. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing or repairs. the manufacturer was contacted and advised that they were aware of the failure and were unable to offer any assistance. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 74,000.
My 2005 ford f150 loses the ability to use the gas throttle. i can still steer and the engine, lights, air conditioning system, and brake system still work. the has happened about two dozen times starting in oct 2010 and still occurring as of december 2011. i have had to swerve across freeway lanes on several occasions. the wrench sign comes on in the dash. i am able to shut the vehicle off and it turns right back on. the wrench goes away but the check engine light stays on. it really scares me because i visit the mountains in the winter and i am afraid this will happen on the way to the mountain and kill me or my family. i have heard numerous complaints online about this issue and it needs to be fixed. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. while driving at any speed the vehicle stalled and the dashboard light illuminated indicating that the throttle body caused the failure to occur. the contact shifted into neutral gear, turned the vehicle off and was able to restart it. the dealer stated that the vehicle didn't have any related recalls. the vehicle wasn't repaired. the vin information wasn't available. the manufacturer will be contacted. the failure mileage was 58,020, and the current mileage was 58,040.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f150. the contact was driving approximately 5 -10 mph when he smelled a burning odor. the vehicle was maneuvered off the roadway and the engine began to exhibit an unusually high increase in engine rpms. suddenly, a fire ignited from underneath the hood. the engine was turned off and the contact immediately extinguished the heavy flames until the fire department arrived to assist. the entire front end of the vehicle was destroyed. the cause of the fire was not determined. the contact was not injured. the vehicle was towed to the contact's residence and was not repaired. the vin was unavailable. the failure and current mileage was unknown.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact stated he was traveling at speeds of 50 mph with the cruise control activated. upon depressing the brake pedal, the cruise control would not deactivate and the vehicle proceeded to accelerate without driver intent, crashing into a street sign. the vehicle continued to maintain activation of the cruise control and the contact utilized the emergency brake in order to bring the vehicle to a stop. the contact did not report any injuries. a police report was not filed. the dealer could not duplicate the failure and stated that the vehicle was operating as designed. there were no prior warnings and the current and failure mileages were 23,000. the consumer stated he was unable to stop the vehicle and consequently, he drove off the road and hit a sign post and side swiped the back of another vehicle. updated 04/23/10.*jb
The following incident has been filed with the ford motor company. i want to be clear that this incident was not the result of a floor mat or driver error. at no time did the driver have her foot on the accelerator nor was there an object on, around, under, or over the accelerator. incident: on 18 february 2010 at approximately 1230 pm my wife, mother in-law, father in-law and infant daughter were proceeding northbound on water tower rd. located in bentonville, ar. there were zero distractions inside the vehicle and my wife was fully alert with no physical impairments. road conditions were dry and weather was sunny with great visibility. as they approached the intersection of water tower rd. and battlefield blvd. at approximately 5-10 miles per hour, my wife began breaking. after placing her right foot on the brake pedal, she immediately noticed/heard/felt/experienced increased acceleration and decreased breaking power during her attempts to stop. she immediately increased pressure on the brake pedal ensuring her right foot was not on the accelerator. the engine continued its efforts to increase speed while my wife fought to bring the vehicle to a stop. they proceeded into and through the vacant intersection at approximately 5-10 miles per hour and fortunately without incident. my wife's efforts to stop the vehicle continued beyond the intersection for an approximate 150 - 200 feet. the vehicle finally ceased its efforts to accelerate and came to rest at that point. after regaining their composure, my wife pumped the brakes in effort to determine the malfunction. unable to determine the problem and feeling comfortable to drive again, they proceeded cautiously only to have this happen once more. this second occurrence happened less than mile from the previous location with my wife being prepared for the malfunction. during this occurrence she pumped the brakes and stopped the increased revolutions of the engine immediately. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 f-150 crew cab. while driving 50 mph the vehicle accelerated past another vehicle. the vehicle started to sputter and lost power causing the contact to apply the brakes to avoid a crash. the vehicle nearly accelerated into traffic which could have caused a crash. the contact stated that this is a manufacturers defect. the failure mileage was 100,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving 30 mph, the vehicle suddenly accelerated. the contact had to apply excessive force to the brakes and shift into neutral in order to get the vehicle to stop. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and after two days of testing, the dealer advised that he was unable to diagnose a failure within the vehicle. the vehicle was not driven during the winter, only the summer and the contact had experienced the failure for two consequent years. an engineer was sent by the manufacturer to install a vehicle registration mark (vrm) in the vehicle to monitor the failure but to no avail. the vrm was removed and the failure recurred shortly afterward. the failure mileage was unknown, but the current mileage was 53,000. updated 06/12/12*lj the consumer stated the sudden acceleraton occurred four times. updated 06/13/12
I have a 2005 f-150 supercrew. over the last several months - approximately 70k miles on truck at the time - the vehicle goes into a "fail safe" mode with the codes p2111 and p2104. the accelerator stops working and you have to coast to the side of the road and turn the car off. the orange wrench light comes on. this has happened about 15 times over the last 3 months. it has been very unsafe and concerning, especially when it happens on the highway. i was told it was the throttle body and that there have been numerous complaints. it seems to happen intermittently and without warning. i have taken it to the dealer and contacted ford who states there is no current issues with this. i am very concerned about the safety of my family and the vehicle and have found numerous complaints on online ford forums. when i went to order the part, i was advised by my dealer that it was on backorder. that causes me even more concern!! i know i am not the only one who is having this problem and it seems to be a serious safety problem. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact stated that the vehicle would sporadically fail to respond to the contact's attempts to accelerate. the vehicle would slowly accelerate and would feel as if it were dragging. when the failure occurred, the vehicle would not accelerate over 10mph. the dealer cleaned the throttle body and the repair briefly corrected the failure before recurring. the dealer then advised that the entire throttle body would need replacing. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 91,000 and the current mileage was approximately 94,000.
2005 ford f150 vehicle loses power and all control while driving on the road. this happened at least six times. very lucky traffic was light most times but one almost a caused rear end collision. i replaced a throttle sensor and the problem disappeared and the problem returned after a couple of weeks. i took it to the dealer and they replaced electronic throttle body and throttle body and motor assembly. they also performed pcm reflash power train control module and retest. the codes received with scan tool were p0121, p2104 and p2112. *tr
My 2005 ford f-150 stalled while driving at 30 mph. accelerator had no response and truck went to idle rpm. had to coast to the side of the road on a busy street. i consider this very dangerous especially if it happened under different circumstances such as entering an intersection. the dealership fixed it and said it was a problem with the electronic throttle system. *tr
Occasionally the cruise control will not release either by pressing brake or turning off on steering wheel button. have to brake against cruise control until vehicle slows enough for it to drop out. which is nearly stopped. *tr
My wife was driving to work when the vehicle loss power at the accelerator pedal, the truck was running but when she tried to depress the accelerator pedal nothing, she said on the dash it said that the vehicle was running in a fail safe mode. she safely made it to a area where she pulled the operators manual out and begin reading. the only fail safe mode she found was about the cooling, the temperature was fine, she called me i told her to turn the vehicle off then restart it she did and it ran fine. i had the vehicle in for a recall for the breaks i ask the dealer to run a diagnostics on it to see about what had happened, also it a had repeated the problem a couple days in a row but only did it in the morning after 20 minutes of driving. the dealer could not find anything wrong with the truck, no codes were showing any issue. the tech said he ran through the system but found nothing he said he reset the computer if it did it again to bring it to the dealer. it did it a couple more times i took it to my mechanic he said it wasn't showing any codes either. i contacted ford consumer with the issue telling them i just wanted it fixed they said the dealer could not find any code faults and could not repeat it so they ford could not fix it. my mechanic said that he had the same issue with another 2005 ford 150 truck he said it was a problem with the electronic accelerator. i'm afraid it's going to do it again and my wife won't be able to prevent getting rear-ended. also ford consumer said they didn't show any issues with the accelerator on this vehicle, i know this isn't true by what i've read here on this web site. please help... *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. while driving 5 mph, the accelerator pedal became stuck to the bottom of the floor. the contact stopped the vehicle and placed it into park. he also noticed that the rpm's were at 5,000 while the vehicle was still in park. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that there were no defects or failures. the current and failure mileages were 17,000. updated 09/24/08. *lj the consumer stated while pulling out of a parking lot when the incident happened. updated 09/30/08. *jb
We own a 2005 ford f150 supercrew pickup bought in june 2005. over the past 3 years we have had numerous instances where the truck will accelerate unexpectedly when either just coming to a stop or when completely stopped. example- sitting at bank drive through- stopped- when the gas was hit to move forward, the engine revved up and it took both feet on the brake to stop the vehicle- with wheels spinning. we believe it to have something to do with cruise control. have had to dealer on 2 occasions they find nothing. last week, i drove the vehicle and was coming to a stop behind a truck at a red light. as i braked, the engine revved to high, wheels were screeching, i kept both feet on brake- the engine would not slow down. i threw it into park- still had engine revving and turned off key before it stopped. we had our personal mechanic look at it. he can find nothing wrong. i refuse to drive it anymore and want it on record that there is something wrong with this vehicle that could kill someone some day. any feedback is appreciated. *tr 3/11/2010 update*cw invoice received. updated 09/13/10
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150 super crew 4x4. the vehicle caught fire while parked. the fire department extinguished the fire and filed a report. the vehicle was destroyed. the fire department stated that the fire originated from the wiring harness. the contact has pictures. the current and failure mileages were 11,200. updated 07/07/08. *lj updatted *jb
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford f150. while slowing down to a complete stop, the vehicle rapidly accelerated. the contact depressed the brake pedal again to make sure that she depressed the correct pedal, and the vehicle jerked, continued to accelerate, and the engine revved. the vehicle only stopped when the passenger placed the gear into park. the contact struck the preceding vehicle and the bumper sustained minor damages. the contacts vehicle was towed to the dealer because she was afraid to drive it again. a police report was filed. she filed complaint number 0405860938 with ford. she was informed that it would be at least two weeks before she would hear from their legal department. there is currently an open investigation number pe08001 (service brakes, hydraulic:power assist:vacuum. service brakes, hydraulic:power assist:vacuum:hoses, lines/piping, and fittings). the current and failure mileages were 34,000. updated 4/29/08 *cn the damage was minor. updated 05/16/08
Truck continues accelerating after foot is removed from accelerator pedal. almost impossible to stop with brake pedal. had to take out of gear to stop truck. restarted truck and it operates properly. it has happened three more times since this original occurrence. ford dealer could find no problem in 2007. am taking it back again as it has happened twice in the past year. *tr
Dt*: the contact stated while applying brake pressure at low speed through a parking lot, the vehicle lurched forward into an embankment without warning. no injuries or damage was sustained. the police was not alerted. the vehicle was driven to the dealer who was unable to duplicate the problem. the manufacturer was not contacted. *ak the consumer stated the truck was in park, when he applied the brake to it in gear, the pedal became stuck. updated 02/22/07.*jb
While operating vehicle in cold conditions or on cold starts the engine races. also during this time as you try and apply the brakes the motor races and if in gear it will surge/leap forward. this cause the vehicle to crash into a block wall and damage the front end of the truck. *nm
While trying to stop my ford f-150 truck, i was actually hitting the accelerator at the same time as i was pushing the brake pedal. i could not tell that it was happening until it was too late. as i pshed on the brake the truck did not seem to slow down nearly as fast as it should have, so i pushed harder on the brake and that did not seem to work properly, then i realized the right edge of my foot was actually depressing the accelerator, but you could not really feel it since it has very little resistance. when i realized what was happening, i tried to lift my foot off the accelrator, but to do so i had to release the brake a bit. when i did that, the vehicle lurched forward toward the car in front of me and hit it. it happens because as you are hitting the accelerator while trying to brake, the engine revs up to high rpm, as you try to get your foot off the accelerator, and release the brake a bit, the car thinks you want to go fast and takes off because of the high rpm. this happened to me about two or three weeks ago, but it just seemed like an oddity at the time so i did not really think it was a big deal. then it happened to me again yesterday when i needed to stop quickly because everyone had slammed on the brakes in front of me, so when i went to hit my brakes, i inadvertantly was hitting the accelerator at the same time again, only this time, it caused an accident as i plowed into the car in front of me. i had plenty of room in front of me, at least 10 to 15 feet or more, and we were only traveling between 5 to 10 miles per hour. i wonder how many other drivers have had this occur to them. i have been driving vehicles for thirty years and have never had this happen to me until i drove this truck, and it has now happened at least 2 times in the last month. i am driving this truck since august this year. *nm
The first time this happened at 3000 miles, the second time, it was around 19,300 miles and was a bit more intense. i was sitting at the stop light, with foot on brake, the truck started accelerating to the point,i started going into traffic. i then put it in neutral and tapped on the gas pedal to get it to idle down. luckily i was able to avoid what could have been deadly. i then took it straight to the dealer, where i was told they could not duplicate the problem, and was told i probably had one foot on the brake and the other on the gas, when i told him i drive with one foot, he said my foot could have slipped from the brake to the gas pedal. every time he came up with a lame excuse as to what could have happened i let him know he was wrong. nothing was done and was told if it happens again bring it back in and they will look at it. needless to say i will be taking it to someone else next time or getting a hold of ford to find a solution. *nm
I was going to meet my husband on the side of the highway to pick up my son. i started slowing down from highway speed of 90kms/hr quite a ways back. i slowed the truck to about 30kms/hr about 40 feet behind his pickup. all of a sudden the truck i was driving gave a couple of lurches, sped up and slammed into the back of my husbands truck. i did not remove my foot from the brake the whole time. there was nothing i could do to stop the truck. on the ground beside the truck there was evidence of something strange going on with the passenger side rear tire. like it had revved up, braked, revved and braked again. the salesman that sold us the truck came out to the scene and said that he believed something went terribly wrong and spoke to the service manager at lacombe ford. they were unable to duplicate the problem and could not come up with a cause for the brakes to malfunction like they did. ford canada did no further testing on the truck. there was $8000 damage to the front end of the f150 and $1000 damage to the other pickup which we have to pay for. we had the damage on the front end repaired and decided to trade it in for something that might not kill me and my family. the day i was taking it in to be traded it failed again, this time at the stop sign at an overpass. luckily no one was coming that day. nothing was ever corrected on the truck. *nm
Dt*: the contact stated while driving 10 mph the brake pedal was depressed and the vehicle accelerated forward crashing into another vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the problem could not be duplicated. no police report was filed however; a representative from the dmv filed a report. update 5/2/2006 - *nm
Dt*: the contact stated while applying the brake the pedal goes to the floor and the contact's foot presses the accelerator. the dealer indicated the brakes operate as designed and both the brake and accelerator pedals meet the fmvss. no repairs have been made. updated 3/28/2006 - *nm
Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle had an improper brake adjustment which made the slack adjuster length different on each side of an axle. the dealership did not find any problem and the contact requested that the brake chambers be replaced and each of the service chambers must be of the same size across the vehicle's axles. updated 10/18/2006 - the brake pedal travels past the accelerator pedal and has caused trouble while the consumer attempts to stop the vehicle. the consumer has inadvertently it both pedals at the same time. *nm
Dt*: the contact stated while stopped the vehicle lurched forward without warning. the engine revved to 5000 rpm and the tires spun and were burning rubber. the dealer could not duplicate the problem and no repairs were made. *jb the horn assembly was replaced. updated 03/17/06. *jb
The incident date is the most recent. truck has only 4200 miles on it. on all four occasions i was braking when it began to accelerated three times at highway speeds, one time on a gravel road. the cruise was not on. i did not have my foot on both the brake and accelerator. the brakes nor the emergency brake would hold it. acceleration went up to 3000+ rpms and was witnessed by the passenger. i had to shift to neutral to get it stopped. all four times the dealer could not identify the problem nor make it happen again. it is a very unsafe and could have caused a fatality accident. ford did reprogram the pcm module, but it happened again after that.*ak
Dt*: the contact stated after attempting to apply sudden brake pressure, the vehicle struck another vehicle in the rear resulting in minor damage. the brakes stopped the vehicle, however not before the point of impact. no injuries were sustained and the police were not notified. afterwards, the contact discovered the brake pedal was too close to the accelerator pedal. it was suspected that due to the design this could be unsafe, although the placement of the accelerator pedal was not a factor in the accident. the dealer was notified. a manufacturer representative inspected the vehicle. it was determined the placement of the accelerator and brake pedal met federal motor vehicle safety standards and no corrections were made.
Engine accelerated to high speed when braking for red signal. was forced to put automatic transmission in neutral and tap accelerator to reduce engine speed to idle. the tachometer read approximately 4000 rpm when put in neutral initially. brakes stopped the truck with difficulty prior to putting gear in neutral. no known tsbs and dealer not sure how to duplicate. *jb
Dt: there was a problem with the vehicle surging forward. on september 25, 2005 the vehicle surged forward , causing the vehicle to run a stop sign. there was no accident. on october 3, 2005 it surged forward again. the engine was on and it was in park. then, the consumer put vehicle into reverse and immediately it surged backwards. because of the consumer's foot was o the brake it kept the vehicle from going into the street. the consumer concerned because it could have caused him to have two major accidents. when he took vehicle to the dealership, they could not find the cause of the problem.*ak
Runaway throttle/un-commanded acceleration event. brand new vehicle, only 110 miles on odometer. while waiting for a stoplight with right foot on brake and transmission in drive, engine began accelerating unexpectedly. neither i nor anything else in the vehicle was pressing on the accelerator in any way. the un-commanded acceleration increased. i pressed harder on the brakes and the acceleration continued to increase, to the point that the rear wheels broke loose and started to squeal (this is a rwd vehicle). then i moved the transmission selector to neutral, at which time the torque to the rear wheels was removed. the engine raced to about 3000-3500 rpm as observed on the tach and then returned to normal idle. at this point everything was normal, so i continued to drive to work since i was very close. no further problems were noted. i parked the vehicle in our parking lot and called the dealer (berge ford, mesa, az) for further advice. all of this happened within about a three second period. the vehicle had been started from cold at about 6:30 am after being parked in garage overnight (on board thermometer read 89 f when i started out). runaway throttle event occurred after driving about five miles. air conditioning was on the entire time. *jb
