We have classified the 56 complaints from 2005 Ford F-150 about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
I have a 05 ford f150 and my differential has gone out and needs to be rebuilt i had this issue while under warranty but ford always found excuses and now that its out of warranty i started to research and i have found alot of complaints where people complain of loud noise and vibrations at the above speeds of 45mph. *ln
As i was driving down a major highway in south carolina, i felt like my transmission might be slipping in my 2005 ford f-150. i took it immediately to a local and reputable mechanic who tested the transmission and subsequently informed me that it was the engine, specifically the spark plugs. in their investigation it was determined that 4 of my 8 spark plugs were broken. they had to use a special tool, developed by ford just for this "problem", in order to extract the broken plugs. the mechanic stated that ford should have to recall these or forced to reimburse consumers for the expensive repairs due to a design error. upon researching on-line, i was totally amazed at how many and how much a problem people have had with these plugs and the consumer is paying for their defect. this is not right. the total cost for this repair for me was $358.55. tell me how many other cars or trucks require this type of repair to replace spark plugs? i would l like for your agency to investigate the number of repairs consumers have had to make because of this defect. [xxx] sc drivers license no. [xxx] vin [xxx] thank you for investigating this defect. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).*tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact stated that when driving at various speeds, the vehicle would attempt to shift into four-wheel drive independently. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where it was found that water was leaking through the front chassis in front of the four-wheel drive and corroding the solenoids. the dealer ordered the necessary parts to repair the vehicle. the failure mileage was 60,000 and the current mileage is 83,000. updated 11/10/10
Fordmotor company on the 2005 ford f150 there has been over 1000 complaints about the actuator on the four wheel drive there is a vacuum switch that operates them water runs down off the cowl contaminating the vac.line causing the actuator to go out therewas a service bulletin put out showing that they new of this problem and did nothing to correct it. the switch controls the vac. to the actuator with no vac. the four wheel drive is engage when .to make it simply it takes vacuum to disengage the four wheel drive if you are going down the road and the switch fails what's going to happen you will ruin the four wheel drive actuators and could get into or cause a accident. *tr
Ford motor company-there was a service bulletin put out show there was a problem with the cam phasers and cam chain tensioner causing the engine to make noises and then engine failure there has been lots of complaintsto ford with nothing being done if you where driving onthe road and the engine blew couldcause a accident i contact ford and they have all most admitted to it that they new there was a problem i have found that there has been 1092 complaints over this problem and nothing done. i contacted ford and that's how i found out about you they keep saying there sending the complaint to another dept..but this is aproblem that could have been correct before the engine was ruined. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford f150. she stated that while driving 20 mph the vehicle fish tailed on an icy road. the back right tire hit a curb and caused the axle to snap and the tire to fall off of the vehicle. the vehicle was towed to the dealer and they replaced the axle and tire. the failure mileage was 58000. the current mileage was 60000.
Front wheels do not engage into 4-wheel drive. indicator lamps display that system is engaged and functioning properly causing a false since of security when traveling on snow covered roads. mechanic replaced part # 7liz-3c247-a (actuator). a couple of mechanics said it was a poor design and this vacuum system was prone to water and dirt and would eventually have to be replaced again. *tr
Transmission failed while driving. leaving me stranded on the highway. front bearing went out ,root cause of failure according to aamco mechanic. truck only has 49,000 miles. truck has always had a vibration . lance cunningham ford always pointed to tires, drive shaft. i believe that the true problem has now came to light. unfortunately the original warranty was for 3 years or 36,000 miles. *tr
Truck engine cutting off at any time while driving ,loss off steering and control of truck. many complaints on line of same problem. truck is out of warranty. it has 40,000miles. it happens a couple times a week. *tr
2005 f-150 driveshaft goes bad prematurely. the middle joint in a 2 piece drive shaft is cheaply made and unserviceable. it causes drivetrain vibration and could fail causing injury to passengers or other drivers though a accident. the part failure is a common occurrence in this vehicle and many have been already replaced. my 2005 f-150 has 72000 miles on it. the driveshaft is bad and must be replaced. many other trucks have the same problem and do not know what it is. i paid a dealership to diagnose the problem. it took them awhile to figure it out. unfortunately i did not have the money for the repair. i could not see spending 900 dollars for the same defective part. i am still looking for a reasonable and quality replacement. drive shafts historically last a lot longer than the ones ford is putting out . this is a dangerous and expensive defect. people are spending money trying to fix a vibration and overlooking the driveshaft because it is so hard to believe that the driveshaft is bad. so it is overlooked for some by the time they figure it out it could be too late for the passenger or a innocent motorist sharing the road with them. do the right thing make ford pay for or replace these driveshafts. time is ticking away and the miles are clicking off on all those trucks with these drive shafts. *tr
Driving on road in school zone (25 miles per hour) children playing on sidewalk. children were jumping on off sidewalk into street. applied my brakes. heard clunk in the back of the truck then - no brake. used emergency brake to stop. failure occurred as axle broke, apparently loose for long time - not original owner, purchased from dealer. c clamp holding axle in place is dissolved into small pieces causing axel to come out. caliper is toast (only thing holding axle into place) rotor, brake pad, all rear axle components - completely failed, caused over $3,000 in repairs to truck. extended warranty won't cover stating when the tire rubbed against the curb - they consider that as impact - ford wants no part in fixing - said no reported problems with c-clamp (no recalls) or axel breaking or slipping away. a true nightmare! - you pay for extended warranty - but they don't pay for the repair, you buy a truck from a dealer, yet they don't check safety - only tires, wipers and small stuff. consumer is forced to bear any defective parts on their own. really frustrated. *tr
While driving, the vacuum solenoid for the 4 wheel drive tries to engage the 4 wheel drive - even at highway speeds- resulting in a horrible sound. the sound was "like i had run over a shopping cart or hit something in the road and was dragging it under the truck". this happened 5 times in two days in less than 30 miles of total driving. the noise is so loud and alarming that it made me immediately apply the brakes and pull to the side of the road because i thought i had hit something/someone. at first i wondered if my muffler or drive shaft or some other part had fallen off of the truck. this "false engagement" of the 4 wheel drive happens without any warning in all kids of driving conditions (slow, fast, breaking or accelerating). a new, redesigned (now has a cover on it to keep moisture out- which was causing the failure) vacuum solenoid was installed on truck - a $27.00 part. dealership kept old part. tech. at dealer told me that this part will go bad at some point and need replacing on all the trucks with the part. he said "not if but when". ford knew about the problem - hence the redesigned part. ford has not notified owners of this part and it's impending failure. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford f150. while driving 2 mph in reverse the tires began to spin around and the 4 wheel drive did not activate. the failure has occurred twice. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and the 4 wheel drive was repaired the first time in jan 2009. . the failure mileage was 38000 and the current mileage was 48000. updated 4/13/10 *cn the consumer stated the second time it was repaired was in march 2000. updated 06/18/10
1. brake dot 3 is running out after several months. when i apply the brakes, the vehicle keeps going. in order to keep the vehicle running, i must push down the brake very hard to stop the vehicle. i have to constantly refill the oil tank. 2. when driving on the highway and the speed reaches at around 45-65 mph, the vehicle automatically loses power and hit at 3-5 mph before stopping. after i completely turn off and reset the battery, the vehicle starts normal again. the vehicle happened from 2009 to current time, but the odb scan does not detect any code or errors.
Four wheel drive does not engage. no indicator lamps. ford had to replace 4x4 motor. 34,000 miles but 38 months so was not covered under warranty. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact stated that she heard a grinding noise while driving at any speed. the noise was heard intermittenly. the dealer could not duplicate the failure. the vehicle later locked into 4-wheel drive while driving less than 55 mph. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they found that the solenoid and the switch for the 4-wheel drive were defective. the contact paid $185 to have the vehicle repaired. the dealer was unsure if the repair would correct the failure because the electrical switch was susceptible to water damage. the current and failure mileages were less than 37,217. updated 08/11/09.*jb
5.4l, supercrew-- engine was replaced by ford at 38,000 miles (after complaint to ford cust svc) due to injector failure and cylinder hydra-lock. now at 46,000 miles, complete transmission failure. only used for daily driver, no towing, never off-road. transmission failed on initial start on 60 degree morning, no pre-failure indicators. paid $2800 for transmission rebuild. i have noticed a fairly large number of problems reported on sub-standard factory transmission and engine parts on ford trucks. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact stated that the four wheel drive feature malfunctioned, causing the vehicle to engage the four wheel drive system while driving 60 mph. the front end of the vehicle shook violently when the failure occurred. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer where the dealer replaced the four wheel drive sensor because water had entered the old sensor and caused the malfunction. the replacing of the four wheel drive sensor did not remedy the issue. the contact called the manufacturer and they advised the contact to take the vehicle back to the dealer. the failure mileage was 70,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact stated that the vehicle would intermittently shift into four wheel drive unexpectedly. the failure occurred when driving 30 mph and above. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and the contact was informed that water was penetrating the actuator. various repairs were performed, but the failure continued. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but offered no assistance. the failure mileage was 20,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f150. the contact stated that when accelerating from low speeds of 15-25 mph, the vehicle would vibrate excessively, causing the transmission to shift hard. the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure and the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer advised the contact to take the vehicle back to the dealer for them to inspect and diagnose the vehicle for repairs. the failure mileage was 64,000.
I bought this truck with 48,000 miles on it. it had a bad shake in the rear area. also a bad brake shimmy. took to ford dealership i bought it. couldn't find anything wrong. told normal! i worked in the service dept of a ford dealership i know normal. 53,000 or so miles bad clunking from transfer area wouldn't go into 4 wheel drive 1/2 the time took to ford, told nothing wrong again. 72,000 miles transmission goes out. told nothing could be done, out by 2000 miles. i was a service manager for a ford dealership they could do a supplement on the warranty. i asked for 1/2 of cost told no. even after documentation of all the services and complaints told to bad so sad. this truck has had transmission troubles, 4 wheel drive trouble, the power window switch fell apart in the door and a bad brake shimmy even after i had a 4 wheel brake job done, its still there. no help from ford at all! *tr
Having intermittent extremely violent shaking issues with our '05 ford f-150. it only happens now and then, but when it does, you cannot even steer to get the truck off the road. it has no relation to speed or braking. went to the dealer, they said they found the problem and replaced one of the arms, but it happened again. i noticed there are hundreds of similar complaints with all years and numerous makes of the ford truck posted online under "violent shaking". it seems that this is a serious problem that ford is not looking into, and it will cause a death, or many if it is not addressed. *tr
The torque converter on my 2005 ford f-150 has had two torque converters fail in the drive train. one failed within the 3 year or 36,000 mile warranty period. the second torque converter failed around 50,000 miles. i believe this information warrants an investigation into the ford line of torque converters for the ford f-150 truck line. *tr
Ford f-150 super crew with 57,000 miles will not engage in overdrive. while driving, the transmission completely slipped out of gear. after pulling off the road and testing it in reverse and drive, i was able to resume but as soon as the transmission reached overdrive it disengaged completely. dealer claims a pin was broken that locks the transmission in overdrive. *tr
Brake problems several times now i have had to have calipers, rotors, etc replaced. now my rear end seems to be slipping going around corners. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact stated that the vehicle was taken to several unknown dealers for transmission repairs. the transmission column shift assembly was replaced in 2007. in 2010, the transmission fluid spilled and the gasket, filters, and spark plugs were replaced; however, the repair did not correct the failure. the contact stated that the vehicle did not accelerate over 40 mph and vibrated. the contact also stated that when the vehicle was driven up hill with the accelerator pedal depressed, the vehicle decelerated. in addition, the check engine and transmission fault indicators illuminated. the manufacturer provided the contact with case number: n24150780-f193g8. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 84,000.
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. while driving between 65-70 mph, the entire vehicle vibrates. the dealer is currently inspecting the vehicle. the contact stated that the vehicle is unsafe to drive. he believed that the driveline was the cause of the failure. the failure mileage was 30,000.
While driving on highway @ 60mph, my 4 wheel drive activated without my touching the dash control. the front axle made terrible grinding noises and the vehicle slowed dramatically. dealer told me it was a vacuum line and ford replaced under warranty. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. while driving 40 mph he stated that the gear shift indicator disengaged when he came to a stop, which caused the vehicle to jerk hard. there was also an increase in the rpm, which caused the vehicle gear shift indictor to engage without warning. the contact stated the transmissions slipped out of gear would not accelerate. the failure mileage was 9,000 and the current mileage was 19,000.
Upon acceleration our f150 excab makes a grinding noise. also, would not disengage from 4hi, had to stop and start a few times to get it to disengage. talked to ford dealer here and he said if the grinding noise happens again bring it in while it is happening so a mechanic can go for a ride. the problem is it is very sporadic and probably won't happen when there is a mechanic in the truck. *tr
When vehicle's engine is cold, and approximately 8 minutes into driving, vehicle will cut off while in motion & wrench light comes on. vehicle then has to be guided to a stop with no power or can be shifted into neutral & restarted while still moving. following vehicle restart engine light is on. code indicates truck has been placed in "limp home mode". after about 2 weeks, engine light goes off. i was advised to replace the throttle body in feb. 2010, however the throttle body had just been replaced in april 2007 when the vehicle was only 2 years old. *tr
First off i want to say that i work for ford and i am very disappointed that the first of the two issue i have hasn't been recalled and i'm not 100% sure about the dates that these problems occurred on. my truck has sounded like it has a diesel engine in it since i bought it brad new in 2005 and after talking to some guys at work i find out that it is caused by cam phasers that are in the 2004-07 5.4litre engines and if these fail you have to get a new motor which i was told just a couple of months ago would be $8900.00 which is absolutely crazy. if you look them up online you will see that this is a huge and costly problem. my second issue is i have had my rearend rebuilt twice since i have owned this vehicle. the first time was before it was out of it 36,000 mile factory warranty, the second time was before it was out of the 100,000 extended warranty that i purchased so luckily those two times did not cost me anything but now it needs it again and the mechanic tell me it could cost $5000 so with the motor issue and the rearend issue i could possibly spend $14,000 in repairs which again is crazy when you spent close to $50,000.00 on the vehicle to begin with. *tr
2005 f150 supercrew 4x4, transmission at 48000 miles began to mis-shift into overdrive. within a few days the transmission missed all shift points and went into neutral. transmission was replaced by extended warranty at dealership. no cause to failure was found. *jb
Clunking/or jearking when slowing or acceleration.*ak
Vehicle rolled away with transmission placed in park and key removed. incident has happened 8 times and dealer attempted repair 4 times, last repair is 17 nov 2005. unknown if it will work. *nm
Brakes, rear, leakage of lubricant from real axle through seals to contaminate rear brake rotors, calipers, etc.. this was found by technician at a ford dealership while truck was in for an oil change. the entire rear end was replaced. it was a matter of time before the brakes would be inoperative. they could not tell if brake fluid may have caused the leak or a failure in the seals. i have all billing paperwork.*ak
Vehicle's transmission failed after only 18 months, 38,925 miles. dealer unable to determine why transmission failed. no lack of fluid, vehicle is not used to tow. could only state that excessive heat build up in transmission and resulted in failure. vehicle and been driven home prior evening with no issues, next morning failed at start up. manufacturer will not warranty due to mileage, replaced with a rebuilt unit at a cost of $2,800. *jb
Please help a consumer! i question the safety and long term value of the new ford f150 trucks my name is [xxx] and i am writing you as a last ditch effort to inform the public about a production issue with the ford f150 trucks that vibrate under normal driving conditions. about three months ago i purchased a new f150 and from that point i have had a vibration and transmission issue. ford has not been able to correct it and in the process i found that the dealership i bought the truck from forged some invoice documents. i was shocked to find this problem all over the country when i started to look into it. you can see for yourself if you search google for topics like "2005 f150 vibration". if you would like, i could send you a list of websites to help. in all fairness to ford they deserve a chance to inform the public about this and i am in the process of working with a lawyer to get my money back. i have attached a copy of my nightmare to this email and just wanted to let you know i have followed every protocol set by ford. i have also noticed that ford just likes to have problems delayed and expect people to run out of money when trying to recover their original purchase. you will also find emails attached from people across the country with the same problem. this story is not a waste of your time. please feel free to search the internet, you will find all the supporting information you need. can you please find the time to help get the word out and make things right? i just want my money back and do not want anyone else to fall into this trap. help from the press would not allow ford motor company to stonewall people. lets give ford a chance to help the consumer. call anytime [xxx] - i am willing to provide all supporting info including service records, research, and contacts from across the usa. thanks [xxx]. *nm information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact stated that the gear shifter could not be removed from park until after several attempts. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where the shift lock solenoid, brake switch and brake module were replaced however, the failure continued. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 200.
Popping from rear-end at slow speeds and shuttering at down shift on highway. local dealer said rear pinion gear out of alignment, and clutch packs were bad they had to order parts to fix the problems. *nm
The automatic transmission in the consumer's 2005 ford f150 failed. *nm
Jerking and bumping noise in drive line at light acceleration just before or just after transmission shifts to the next gear. dealer added a gear fluid additive that they said was left out at factory. this did not fix the problem. *nm
I currently own a 2005 ford f-150 4x4 supercrew truck and have started experiencing some grinding/ pulling in the transmission. i first thought it would probably just go away and now it just gets worse each time. the problem creates a rather loud noise and has greatly concerned me. i contacted the dealership where i purchased the truck, rivertown ford/ columbus,ga, and i discovered that this problem seems to be wide spread with the f-150. i am in process of trying to solve this problem now. ford motor co. needs to issue a recall for this issue. *nm
My paint job was defective and thin, my windshield was not sealed properly, there are ticking noises from under the dashboard, the front end is too heavy for the added weight to the truck, the transmission stalls the truck when it rolls backwards in drive, the truck shakes at high speeds and has excessive tire wear, which is the only thing that ford has all but admitted to by extending the excessive tire wear/ride harshness warranty from 1yr/12,000 miles to 3yrs/36,000 miles. have you ever heard of a car company giving away something unless there was a serious problem with this vehicle. *nm
I have a new 2005 f150 super crew 4x4 w/ 5.4l. especially noticeable in city traffic, whenever i slow down and then accelerate, there is a at least one or more bumps or jerks seeming to come from the transmission or drive train. ford won't do anything about it. this is too major of a bump to not cause damage or problems later on. *nm
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford f150. since the vehicle was purchased, the transmission experienced irregularities while shifting. the vehicle would shift in and out of gear. the contact heard a noise when the vehicle shifted into overdrive. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer at 23,400 miles and they stated that nothing was wrong with the vehicle. rocks were removed from the exhaust shield. the technician test drove the vehicle and stated that the noise was normal. while driving at 55 mph, the vehicle began jerking and the transmission failed without warning. the dealer stated that something became loose within the transmission and it needed to be replaced. ford stated that the contact would have to pay out of pocket because the vehicle was not under warranty. the purchase date was unknown. the current mileage was 67,000 and failure mileage was 8.
Ever since delivery of vehicle (2005 ford f150 lariat 4wd), vehicle "shutters" or "jerks" on acceleration from a complete stop. initially there was also some "popping" on turning and acceleration, which was fixed by the dealership. the shuttering has been fixed, but after 3 repair attemps, the truck continues to jump/jerk on acceleration from a complete stop. the dealership states this is normal, but the driveline only jerks when in 2wd mode - it does not jerk in 4wd. to get the shuttering to stop, ford installed a shim kit to align the driveline, which they state is a problem they finally found. *jb
Dt: the contact owns a 2005 ford f150. the contact states that the automatic transmission is not working properly. while driving up a hill the vehicle will roll back. also, when driving down a hill the vehicle will roll back as well. in addition, transmission is making a clanking noise. the vehicle was taken to the dealership four times, and they would like to fix the vehicle, but they contacted ford. the dealership spoke with the regional ford representative, who told them this was normal for the vehicle although none of the other trucks had a similar problem. the contact test drove a 1999 model and drove it the same places where she experienced the problem ,and that vehicle did not experience the same problem. the dealership was going to tear the vehicle apart to see what was wrong with it because they test drove it as well and noticed the problem. this problem is intermittent and gets worse.*ak *nm
I purchased f150 lariat from leif johnson ford in austin oct 2004. i have been experiencing trouble with the truck not wanting to come out of park. you can put your foot on the brake all day long and try to push the button in to move the gear and nothing happens. i have been to the dealership 4 times in the past month trying to resolve the problem. last friday 8-05-05 they changed out the complete gear shift thinking that was the problem and have the same problem on that saturday 8-06-05 and again 8-07-05,8-08-05 in which i returned to ford.*jb
Automatic transmission on 2005 ford 150, goes into nuteral when you stop on a hill and will roll backwards even though the truck is in drive or the truck will roll forward even with the truck in reverse. the truck also goes into nuteral when going down a hill and you take your foot off the gas . transmission then clunks when goes back into gear. also when tuck down shifts when going up hill it seems to hit a dead space in the transmission. was told this is all normal by ford reps. *nm
