We have classified the 60 complaints from 2005 Ford F-150 about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
Have owned this truck bought new, 2005. have used sparingly only 15k + miles. over the years i have experianced a number of occasions when it tried to accellerate when i went to brake. first thought it a quirk or floor mats. recently nearly trashed a parked car while backing ito a parking space. continued to accellerate dispite standing on brake. there is no longer any doubt that this is a problem with sua, sudden unintended accelleration, that ford has never admitted. i have made sure i am off the gas pedal and the floor mat has been removed. this happens when the vehicle is moving and when trying to brake!
The brake warning lite remains on. i'm told by my mechanic that it is due to a broken connection in the dash board circuit board and he said it is a relatively common fault. repair requires removing the entire dash board and replacement of the circuit board.
My 2005 ford f150 truck has had so many problems & some replace twice & im over it im about to have a heart attack now it sounds like my aculator again with the sound of metal scraping on the ground and when i switch it to 44 the sounds stops .but if its not in 44 the sound stays and it is loud ! i have spent so much get my truck fixed and what upsets me is i take care of my truck change oil spark plugs everything since purchased in 2005 brand new and im over it something needs to done with all these parts defected and it will continue until something is done.
Purchased ford f150 from old saybrook ford, feb. 16. the truck has the 5.4 engine which has numerous complaints of engine failure. driving on route 1 when truck eccelorates or loses power. when we bought the truck the chain guide was broke and eating through the case. spark plugs get stuck in engine or propel them selves through the truck hood. dangerous engine to have on road. i owe 8000.00 on a truck that now needs 4-6000 worth of work.
Vehicle went into "failsafe" mode on two separate occasions within the last year! and most recently, two weeks ago! both at highway speed on two different interstates in florida! very dangerous, and hard to control vehicle to "limp" to a safe place to stop! many possible causes from electrical, fuel, or engine issues that are well documented on many internet sites and f150 forums! also rust issues on roof of vehicle in rain channels! very common, and very poor design!
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. while driving, the vehicle idled without warning. the contact had to pull the vehicle over to restart it, but it continued to idle. the maintenance warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the fuel injection control module needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the dealer was not notified. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 05v270000 (electrical system). the manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that there was no recall associated with the vin. the approximate failure mileage was 98,778.
Fuse 14 controlling abs module, dtr sensor, reverse lights, pcv heater, air conditioner compressor, cruise control deactivator switch and daytime headlights was repeatedly blowing. truck was serviced by dealer on 3-23-16, replacing the a/c compressor. replacing the a/c compressor did not resolve any issues. the truck was returned to the dealer on 4-6-16 for the same issue with the same fuse. the dealership replaced the fuse and performed diagnostic tests on the truck, then informing me that they could not diagnose or locate the short. the dealership informed me that i would have to drive the truck until the fuse started blowing more frequently. the first time the truck was driven after work was performed the cruise control was not functioning properly. the truck engine would surge as the truck went down the road with the cruise control on. the issue with the cruise control happened on 4-9-16. on the morning of 4-10-16 the truck was driven approximately 4 miles and parked in the drive of my home. after entering the house the alarm was heard sounding on the vehicle, at which time i stepped outside to find the truck on fire. the fire seemed to have started on the inside of the truck.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. while driving 40 mph, the driver side air bag light remained illuminated. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 190,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. while driving and making a right turn, the vehicle lost power and stalled. the contact heard a beep sound prior to the failure. the failure recurred twice. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who was unable to duplicate the failure or retrieve a fault code. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vin was unavailable. the approximate failure mileage was 140,000.
A number of wires leading from the body into the driver's side door have been cut/worn possibly due to contact with the inside of the door. the rubber and plastic parts meant to protect the wires were also cut/worn. this has led to complete failure of all electronics in the door including power lock, power windows, automatic shutoff of radio, door chime, keypad, and mirrors. discussion with ford dealer indicated that they have seen this problem in the past.
I started the truck and then turned on the rear defrost, which i rarely use. it was about 55 degrees outside. after about 2 minutes i heard a hissing noise that lasted for about 5 seconds and then a heard loud pop and then the windshield shattered. many other articles on the web indicate that this is a known defect with the rear defrost. i called ford and they will not offer and compensation to have it fixed even though it is a known issue. my daughter was in the back seat and got glass in her hair. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving the vehicle at 65 mph, the vehicle began stalling intimittently then the engine and maintanenence warning light illuminated. the contact took the vehicle to a mechanic where it was diagnosed that the air filter was outdated and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 108,000.
on the morning of march 5th 2015 i started my truck to warm the inside and also melt the snow off my windshield. i got in the truck and backed out away from house. due to having snow on the driveway i turned on the 4 wheel drive in high. my four wheel drive would not work so i tried to swicth to 2 wheel drive back to four wheel drive but the 4 wheel drive would not turn on. i grabbed the gear shift to put the truck back in park when i noticed my gear shift could float to park to 1st gear freely and would not shift. at this time i noticed smoke starting to come inside cab from under dash and thru the vents. i jumped out and opened the hood. a 1 foot section of a wiring harnes mounted to the firewall had caught fire. i made attempts to put out the fire but within a few seconds the engine compartment was engulfed. in 2 to 3 minutes the entire inside of the cab was also completely on fire. my wife who was watching me immediatly called 911 to get the fire department. after 3 minutes the truck was already a total lose. due to the truck being only 60' from my house and burning so hot i was concerned about my house catching fire. two gentleman from the rescue squad arrived but it was too late for anything to be done. i was able to get a backhoe and put the fire out with snow. unfortunately i had liability insurance only which meant a total lose. i never dreamed that the truck would burn up sitting in my driveway!!!! i know there have been some recalls for f150 due to fire hazards with the cruise control for other year model close to 2005. a vehicle catching fire while its sitting in a driveway running is totally unacceptable. the truck was in excellent shape and had no after market parts or work performed. i have no ideal why the wiring harness caught fire.
We have had our 2005 f-150 king ranch for about 10 years now. today (feb 10,2015), my wife and our one year babe were heading to the post office the truck displayed a message reading "engine failsafe mode". the truck lost all power, no steering, and it stall on the highway going about 65 mph. luckily, she said there were vehicles behind her and she pulled it over with no steering and the engine dead. my wife then sat on the highway for about 10 minutes and tried to start the vehicle, which started and there were no "engine failsafe mode" on display anymore. know with-in the last year our truck has had the check engine light and the abs light has come on and off every other month. i have checked the fuses and had replace a few but at time it is not the fuse. i've had the interior dim in and out and at times it does not work at all. by reading the f150.net forum found out the a wire that splits into two wires was corroded on the passenger side floor board, it seems that condensation or water come in and stays in that pocket were that wiring harness goes thru. i am now terrified that truck will shut off on the highway again with my family and i in it. this seems to be a life threatening problem. i have read thru some forums and it seems that people have called the ford dealership and the service department claimed they have never heard of this problem, but can work on it if they bring it in. but that ford claim that they fix the problem and the people says that the problem still exist. hope some one can help or assist us in fixing this issue not just for our family but for others too. sincerely [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Over the past 5 years i have had my truck go into fail safe mode. my truck will flash fail safe and i will lose all power to the vehicle. i'm able to coast to a stop. i have been able to re start my vehicle and continue driving. *tr

2005 ford f-150. consumer writes in regards to engine fail safe mode malfunctions causes vehicle to lose all power, brakes and steering. consumer has different vehicle complaint in artemis. *smd the dealer investigated the complaint, but was unable to identify the cause. *jb
I purchases a used 2005 ford f150 about 5 months ago. today, feb 28, 2014, i was leaving my neighborhood and my trucks display flashed an message reading "engine failsafe mode". my truck lost all power, no steering and died. luckily i was on surface streets and pulled it over with no power steering and engine dead. the mechanics cannot find the cause and the engine will start but continues to turn off and the vehicle's computer shuts down. online i read of this happening on the freeway at 65 mph. iam now terrified that my truck will shut off on the freeway with my children in the truck with me. this seems to be a life threatening problem. i called a ford dealership and the service dept claimed they never heard of this but can work on it if i bring it in. what is my recourse? thank you. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact stated that whenever he came to stop, the gears would engage independently and make a loud noise. the vehicle was taken to the dealer several times where the technician diagnosed that the alternator was defective and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. the contact mentioned that he had to replace the alternator a total of four times. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 175,000 and the current mileage was 190,000.
I started the truck and the all the initial before engine starts lights came on, tachometer went to zero and there was a warning buzzer. i rapped the top of the dash after trying three restarts where nothing changed. the truck normalized and i drove it. i do not often drive the truck, so about three weeks later i was headed to pennsylvania and was about to enter the hrbt tunnel when the instrument cluster went to key on status (no tachometer or speedometer function, multitude of warning lights and warning buzzer). so at 55mph i hit the top of the dash and the instrument cluster briefly came back on then shut off again. i repeated the blow on the top of the dash and the problem went away for about five hours and then came back again. it's quite disconcerting to have the speedometer shut down while driving and the rest of the instrument cluster not function. this continues to happen and ford's fix is for me to have to spend approximately $900.00 to completely replace the cluster. *js
Ok so we bought a ford f150 2005 on friday of last week which would be 08/09/2013 . the man assured us this was a safe and reliable vehicle. so we start our trip across the country to look at a new house in eastern north carolina. we stopped in arizona to see my girlfriends mom. sur enough the truck would not start the next day. we take it to a mechanic and he says its the fuel pump so he changes it out we drive it 2 blocks down the street back to her parents house turn off the truck load it up with our stuff and it will not start again. so the mechanic comes back over says ok it must be the fuel modulator. so he changes out the fuel modulator and sure enough it worked we drove it two blocks turned it off, reloaded the truck again. again it would not start back up, apparently the new modulator killed the brand new fuel pump we just paid $500 for so now we have to get another fuel pump as well. i am not happy after doing research there is thousands of people having the same problem and if anything like us we now have paid nearly $1000 to fix a problem that could easily be changed by ford mounting the fuel modulate under the hood near the engine like the rest of the modulators. would you please look into this as soon as you can this is so uncalled for a lot of us work to hard for our money and our vehicles to have them break down with the same problem every time we stop. included is a link to video where the guy explains the problem and all the people who have had the problem as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2e9kmf1_kg. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving approximately 10 mph and depressing the brake pedal, the vehicle stalled. the contact stated that he replaced the battery prior to the failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 77,000. *tr
Rear passenger window regulator stopped working and window fell into door. had my daughter done this while driving she would have been scared by the loud popping noise and potentially crashed into object injuring herself and or others. this is a common problem and ford needs to recall the trucks with the plastic parts and falty mechanism. search the web and there are hundreds of vehicles with the same issue . years 2004-2006. ford needs to recall!! *tr
Dash electrical relay issue, paint peeling tailgate, transmission shutter going into overdrive 45 mph. *tr
My fuel control module shorted out which caused my pcm to be erased. it seems to be a common problem after researching it, but no recall has been issued. my pregnant wife was driving my truck and lost all power. this resulted in a near accident due to having no power steering and less brake control. if this is such a common problem with the placement of the control module why has this not been recalled. $1000 later i hope this doesn't happen again. *tr
After the recall to prevent a short between horn and air bag was completed in 2011 a short time thereafter in the middle of the night the horn came on by itself in the locked vehicle with no one in it. after trying everything i could think of like starting the engine and pushing the horn button numerous times. i was about ready to disconnect the battery when in anger i hit the center of the steering wheel very hard with my hand and the horn stopped blowing. from that day on the airbag warning light stays on when the engine runs. and the horn blows half as loud as it originally did when activated. ford says its my problem because the recall was already completed. only problem here is that their was no problem at all until after the recall work. *tr
The truck has been back to ford many times for draining the battery. if it is parked for 2 to 3 days i would have to jump start it. the dealers could not find the problem and keep replacing the battery. after it was out of warranty paid out of my own pocket to find the problem still could not find. i have a video of the truck in12/11 of the heater/defroster running after the truck was parked for 3 hours with no keys in the truck. on 5/16/2012 the truck was parked in my driveway and caught fire under the dash. *tr
Ford factory spark plug breaks within the head causing potential internal engine damage. an extremely common issue that has lead to the invention of a special tool used just because f the issue. commonly reaching hundreds and even thousands of dollars to repair. ford has changed their tsb from changing plugs at 100k miles to 60k miles. however by the time a issue was noticed many of us owners have over the 60k mile mark. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, a loud pop noise was heard and the vehicle erupted into flames. the vehicle caused extensive damage to a commercial building in which it was parked near. the police were contacted and a police report was filed. the fire department did not determine the cause of the fire. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was approximately 78,000. updated 03/28/12 *bf updated 03/30/12
My fuel pump module shorted out. it had become corroded. there was a melting of plastic parts in the module. i could smell the plastic burning before the unit failed. the truck was running fine and then suddenly died when the module failed. fortunately, i was driving through a small town when this happened. if it would have happened on the highway it could have been a very dangerous situation. i feel ford should be performing a recall on these modules. it's a very poor design. i also feel that the truck owners should be compensated for the repairs that have already been done. *tr
I just bought this vechile with in the past 2 weeks and the window on the driver side, made a loud grinding sound .....then a loud bang as the window fell down in the door! i'm very lucky that i did not total my vechile as i was pulling into main traffic on a busy road that i live on! this was my dads old vechile and he had the same problem with the passenger side.....not to long ago! also have been doing some digging on this issue and i see that quite a few other people have been going throught the same problem as well! just making first few payments and boom!!!! there go's a bunch of money on a safety part that really needs fixed! ford .........wake up and fix this issue already!!! *tr
Vehicle stalls out completely when coming to a stop and at highway speed. vehicle goes into fail safe mode. very hard to control vehicle. vehicle can be restarted once put in park and shut off.
The truck was not running. when the door was opened the flames , from the burning seat shot up and burnt the carpet and door panel , before it could be put out. the controls on the seat were completely melted. it still has a smell of an electrical fire. *tt
2005 ford f150. consumer states engine shuts off and vehicle continues to go into "fail safe mode" *tgw the consumer stated there were times when the vehicle would re-start, and other times it wouldn't. the consumer stated several components such as the fuel filter, catalytic converter, fuel pump module, throttle body, and crankshaft position sensor were replaced to try and rectify the problem. the engine began to misfire and the check engine light illuminated. the consumer stated it was finally determined, the casing on the crankshaft position sensor wire had rubbed through and was shorting out on the ac line running along the right fender well. the consumer stated at some point when his vehicle was being serviced at the dealer, a cover was removed from the far left wiring harness at the pcm, which permitted water to run down the inside of the wiring harness and shorted out the connector. jb
2005 f150 goes into "fail safe mode" and shuts down while driving. it only occurred once per year starting at 65,000 miles, but now happens every 3-4 weeks at 114,000 miles. once the engine shuts down, i put the transmission into neutral while coasting and it restarts easily. the engine light illuminates for 3-4 days and then turns off. in researching the issue, it seems to be a rather common problem with this vehicle and is usually caused by a faulty throttle body. ford states that they are aware of the problem. *tr
While driving vehicle at any speed from 10 mph to 70 mph the truck will go into safe mode (limp-home mode) going down to 5 mph and losing all power steering. when diagnosed it is the throttle body control to me this is a safety issue what happens if i am driving 70 mph on the highway and it goes into safety mode and i lose all power steering. does someone have to die before there is a recall on this??? it will cost me around $1000.00 to fix per brondes ford in toledo ohio and i am told ford has 2 or 3 vehicles a week come in for the same problem. to me this is not standard maintenance.
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving 5 mph, the engine fail safe light illuminated and the vehicle suddenly stopped on a railroad track. the contact stated that the failure alsmost caused a crash. the vehicle would not move although the engine was still running. the failure could not be diagnosed by the dealer. the failure mileage was approximately 46,000.
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. while the contact was driving approximately 10 mph and attempting to slow down, the vehicle suddenly accelerated. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that updates needed to be made to the computer. the updates were made but the failure continued. the failure mileage was approximately 69,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, all of the gauges and lights on the instrument panel began to malfunction. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle had not been repaired. the failure and current mileage was 83,490.
my 2005 ford f150 pick-up drivers side window made a loud bang when i went to roll it up. i was driving when this happened and was very startled, almost hitting the car next to me. i looked for a website to fix it and found they have several issues with their electric windows. add one more. *tr
Driver side power window is having issues rolling up. will roll down fine, but when i go to roll it up, gets stuck halfway through. i have to grab top of the window to force it back all the way up. i had this problem 2 years ago when truck was under warranty and dealer replaced free of charge. now i'm already having the same issue only 2 years later- i read a ton of posts on the web and it looks like this is an ongoing problem with fords and should be something that should be recalled. there are reports of windows shattering on the highway for being only rolled up halfway when the window would not roll up- also what if i get stuck in a bad part of town, like compton, ca and my window won't roll up? *tr
7 of 8 spark plugs broke off while changing out on my vehical this is crazy heard alot of complaints. *tr
I was driving @ 45mph when engine suddenly stalled out and lost all power, rpms, and power steering. check engine lights came on, along with "check gauges" message. pulled over, turned off truck, then started up and everything was fine again. this is the second time this has happened. since everything is working again, it wont give a diagnostic code, so problem cannot be fixed. i have read alot online of this happening to others, but ford seems oblivious to the fact. some say it could be a throttle positioning sensor. *tr
I have a 2005 ford f150 truck. the end of december 2009 the driver's side window fell down. it started with the electric window button sticking and ended up all of a sudden falling down. the ford mechanics said this is not unusual and could happen to all 4 windows. this is not a covered service for repair.*cw
While driving our truck the driver side window slowly lowered itself and would not raise up. this was approximately 2 years ago. yesterday, september 25, 2011 about 2pm, the passenger side window went down on its own and would not raise up. i turned off the hwy i was on and luckily avoided a wreck. today sept. 29, 2011, i called ford motor company, told them about the window and the previous window being fixed, gave them my vin#, name, telephone# and was told there are no recall's and they are not aware of any problems and cannot help us financially with this problem. i told them, i was filling a complaint with them and notifying you. *tr
Electronic throttle control failure causes the engine to lose all power, power steering is inoperable and vehicle must be stopped, ignition turned off and on again before vehicle is able to proceed. this has happened on 4 occasions in the past year with no warning. this defect poses a seriously dangerous situation, especially at highway speeds, as the operator has no control over the vehicle until able to pull to the side, turn ignition off and then restart the engine. ford service says they are unaware of this problem but, it is reported numerous times in forums on ford vehicle safety as a $500-$600 repair. this doesn't seem like a normal wear & tear issue but rather a factory defect that ford should address before someone is injured?
Speedometer and gauges all drop to zero, power to clock/radio goes off, flash of abs light and then flash of srs light, when gauges return to normal the low fuel signal goes on in the odometer until the fuel gauge returns to normal. srs light blinks 5 times then 3 times, repeats, and then stays on until the vehicle is shut off. this happens while the vehicle is being driven down the road and may happen multiple times in a row. *tr
All four windows do not roll up or down. the digital instruments and lights on dashboard filker on and off. an independent mechanic checked vehicle and stated all four of the electric motors needed to be replace. still working on the dashboard problem. *tr
While driving 35 mph my ford f150 truck engine shut down. the truck lost all power brakes and steering. seconds before it stalled a engine malfunction light came on. i was only able to re-start after coming to a complete stop, placing the truck in park and turning the key off then back on. took it to dealer and they road tested and diagnosed codes; p2104, p0121 and p2112. pinpointed and found electronic throttle body physically sticking closed. replaced etb and retested ok after repairs. this was not covered under warranty. time of failure the truck mileage was 33900. see service repair order. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. while driving 35 mph, the engine shut off and the warning indicator illuminated. the contact restarted the vehicle and pulled over to the side of the road. the dealer stated that they never heard of this type of failure and advised the contact to bring in the vehicle for repair. the dealer inspected the vehicle and stated that the electronic part that controls the foot pedal failed. the vehicle was repaired under warranty. the failure and current mileages were 33,900.
