Problems with 2015 Ford Explorer UNKNOWN OR OTHER

On average, the 2015 Ford Explorer starts to “feel” problems with the UNKNOWN OR OTHER and its various aspects after 28 831 miles.

Recently reported UNKNOWN OR OTHER problems on 2015 Ford Explorer

Strong smell of exhaust in cabin of vehicle once car was warmed up. began almost immediately after purchase of car, but was thought to be new car "burn off" of chemicals used in production. became very significant once weather was cooler and no windows could be opened while driving. also very significant while sitting in traffic. back to dealer 4 different times over a period of 4-5 months. multiple attempts made to correct problem. dealer called ford hot line many times for help. entire exhaust system replaced along with "other" many parts, including r&r muffler assembly and complete undercoating of all rear seams finally fixed in early 2016 after having to be towed in to dealer due to loss of transmission fluid from a ptu intermediate shaft leaking again after being replaced 01/19/2016 as part of exhaust problem. this car spent more time in the shop and i drove, i think, all of the dealers rental vehicles during that 3 to 4 month period. lemon law here in ma could have been initiated if need be after 3 attempts at fixing the problem. i was just frustrated with all the time and driving wasted to be back and forth to dealer. the problem has been resolved as of now, but will be very careful to watch for any recurrence. carbon monoxide is not a good thing!!!!!

Evidence of carbon monoxide coming into the cabin of my ford explorer - please be advised i leased a 2015 ford explorer xlt from al packer ford in west palm beach florida on 3-21-2015. immediately after purchasing the vehicle when i got on the highway to drive home i smelled a burning smell and thought it may be the typical engine burnoff smell that happens on some new cars. after the burning smell continued for many months after rapid acceleration of the car, i took the car to the fire department. multiple firemen rode with me in the car and tested the vehicle for carbon monoxide with their drager x-am 2500. the device came back positive for carbon monoxide in the vehicle. the carbon monoxide levels appear as soon as you accelerate. the fire department tested 3 minutes of driving but within 3 minutes the level got to 38 ppm. i bought my own co detector after that and have seen levels get higher into the 50's after driving 20 minutes and making multiple accelerations. i didnt want to continue the testing further as i was concerned for my health. i have both the fire department fire incident report stating that carbon monoxide was building in the car, along with a service invoice from al packer ford stating that a carbon monoxide tester shows evidence of exhaust fumes in the vehicle. i kept bringing the car back to ford multiple times complaining, i brought the service employees in the vehicle with me and showed them the co readings. they stated their service department did not have a co meter. each time they tried to fix the problem with no success. i started the lemon law process but ford made the process so difficult that while i was waiting for the engineer to come out to see the car i traded it in. i was in fear of my family's health breathing in the constant exhaust fumes that were coming in my vehicle every time i did a rapid acceleration.

New (dealer demo), 2015 explorer xlt with ~6000 miles on it. the vehicle cabin fills with acrid, "hair/plastic burning" smelling fumes when under heavy acceleration; mostly at >4500rpm while trying to pass or enter traffic. the fumes cause headache and nausea and actually leave a long lasting, burning/oily taste in the mouth afterwards. it takes all windows open for many minutes to clear most of the fumes/smell out. the physical effects seem to last for up to 30 minutes. this appears to be a condition that has existed since the 2011 model and is still present in the 2015 model.

I smell exhaust fumes in the cabin of my vehicle. especially noticeable with acceleration such as when passing vehicles, merging onto highways, climbing hills. first noticed this a few months after purchasing my vehicle in 2015.

I own a brand new 2015 ford explorer. we purchased the vehicle about a month ago. the second day we had the vehicle we noticed a strong smell that would fill the cabin of the car during acceleration. we thought the smell was just the "new" burning off the engine, fast forward to a month later and the problem is just as strong as ever. i was curious so i googled the issue and to my shock there are thousands of cases with the exact same problem. there is even a class action lawsuit in place at this time about this very problem. i have tried contacting ford with no help whatsoever. i am concerned about the safety and well being of my family in what was supposed to be a reliable and safe vehicle. cases of carbon monoxide illness from exhaust fumes are nothing that needs to be pushed aside.

The exhaust of the fumes coming into the cabin occurs during full throttle applications, especially when merging onto highways or climbing steep inclines and since the start of the problem has been causing members of my family health problems such as asthma. we have filed a complaint with ford at least 3 times for which they held the vehicle 3-4 days for inspection, but found no discrepancy, we wonder why they can't smell it as it happens when it is being driven on the freeway and during instances mentioned above.

Exhaust fumes in cabin as well as a popping noise when i turn left and felt like power steering was going out. popping can happen while stationary or moving. exhaust fumes in cabin when you accelerate. has been happening since i've owned the car. dealership (ford) can not duplicate either. purchased new tires last year and since that day, the suv has a consistent vibration. they (dealership) ford can not duplicate the issue. i was told today, the exhaust fumes only relate to the police suv's. i've reported this since i've had the car....

Takata recall, strong odor inside car. strong odor whenever air conditioner is on. strong egg smell. bad smells coming through vents. experiencing extremely bad headaches and dizziness.

Exhaust smell in cabin when passing or climbing grades

August 24, 2015 i was driving to a 7:00 pm exercise class .i was talking to my mother via bluetooth when i suddenly blacked out and drove across the service road and all 4 lanes both north and south of 287 . i wake to emergency responders pulling me from the car and putting me into a ambulance , my mother could hear all of this. i was taken to hospital and had multiple tests run but nothing was found . after i was discharged i had several more tests run and again nothing was found. $18,000 damage to car , medical bills , missed work and i had to retest to keep my drivers license but i never could find a cause. spring 2017 a friend sent me a article about ford explorers leaking carbon monoxide into the cabins . this made complete sense. i purchased a detector and have had it to go off twice. i am reporting this because ford needs to address this issue . they have said this only happens in modified police vehicles but i can tell you by my experience that is not true.

Carbon monoxide in the ford explorer 2015 not fixed by ford dealership purchased from new 2015, customer complained about since day one delivery, unstable movements, left right, side to side, not fixed by ford dealership purchased. dealership states (not our problem, prove it.)

We would get extreme headaches and nausea while driving this vehicle. as soon as we would get out for a period of time all symptoms would go away. we took it back to the dealer several times and it was in the shop longer then we actually had the car and the ford dealership never believed us about the problem.

Exhaust gas smell inside the cabin during and after acceleration, hill climbing or trailer towing.

Since the moment we drove the car off the lot it has put off an awful exhaust smell when accelerating or driving on an upward incline. it is so bad we have to roll down the windows most of the time to keep from getting sick to our stomachs.

Law enforcement vehicle receiving high carbon monoxide level readings (10+ parts per million) in passenger cabin upon hard acceleration (from complete stop to 100+ mph) with the air conditioning system on with the recirculation function activated. 549

Since purchased brand new in 2015, we noticed when accelerating that there was an exhaust smell inside the cab with the windows closed. we also noticed on long trips we would get headaches and feel sleepy/weak. called the dealer and complained about exhaust odor, and was told it would be 600-700 dollars to reseal the cab and do some other repairs. i feel this is not fair and this is a defect the vehicle had since new.

Exhaust smell enters cabin under hard acceleration

2015 ford explorer has foul smell inside the cabin. really noticeable when the windows are down or sunroof is open. took vehicle to dealer (varsity ford) that it was purchased from and it had a technical bulletin. technical bulletin was performed and released back. vehicle still has same issue. now the dealer is saying there is nothing they can do until the ford engineers investigate. i installed a carbon monoxide sniffer into the vehicle and found 45 ppm of carbon monoxide entering the vehicle while driving down the road. took vehicle back to the dealer and explained the issue. there telling me there is nothing at this time they can do without ford releasing a fix ????????

Exhaust/possibly carbon monoxide smell inside passenger area. after heavy acceleration exhaust odor fills cabin. this happens every time there is a need for heavy acceleration. this happened since the auto was new. i noticed on a cnn report that this only happened on police vehicles. that is not the case. this is not a police vehicle.

I've had my 2015 explorer for a year now. since i have had it, when you get on the gas such as merging in traffic or just taking off there is a fowl smell that comes and goes. i thought because it was a new vehicle that would happen until i read the current investigation and i am now worried that it isnt supposed to happen and it could be bad for my children and i.

I bought a 2015 ford explorer in may of 2015. i frequently smell a sulfur odor in the cabin of my vehicle, especially when climbing hills. i sttarted experiencing severe headaches, nausea, lethargy, numbness, tingling, and cramping in extremities, lightheaded, loss of balance, vision problems and more during the summer of 2015. the symptoms continue through today. i have been under the care of several doctors since then including a neurologist, cardiologist, orthopedic spine surgeon, and podiatrist. all are trying to figure out what is causing my symptoms. i have had a mri of my brain, x-rays of my spine, neurological testing and additional tests to try to figure out what is going on. two friends just told me that they heard of others who drive 2015 ford explorers who experienced the same problems as me.

Exhaust smell in the cabin while driving. smell can happen at anytime while driving.

I am experiencing a exhaust odor in the cab of my 2015 ford explorer during acceleration. i have had the vehicle in for service regarding this issue four times since july 2015.

Exhaust including carbon monoxide enters the cabin of my car. there is a strong smell of exhaust and sulfur. this occurs when you excel the vehicle. ford has tried multiple times and cannot fix my car. they have given up and will no longer help us. leaving us with health problems. this has been ongoing since 5,000 miles and we now have over 30,000 miles.

During and after acceleration at any speed there is a very strong sulphur smell in the cabin of the vehicle. it appears to enter from the rear of the vehicle and it must be exhausted by opening the windows every single time. the fumes contain co2 and are very dangerous to all within the vehicle. all passengers complain of a light headache and nausea.

My 2015 ford explorer fills with exhaust fumes anytime i accelerate hard, such as passing, accelerating to get on the interstate ("on ramp") etc. i have taken the vehicle to the ford dealership 5 times. they allegedly changed the tailgate gaskets twice and rear part of exhaust system and who knows what. the car still does it. i have to roll down the windows to clear out the fumes. i become very sleepy while driving the vehicle at times. i have scared myself several times, drifting out of my lane. i partially wind down the windows. we have been suffering with this for 2-3 years. one day i was driving with all of the windows down and accelerated a little hard to where the transmission down shifted and the whole cabin filled with fumes. so the problem must be coming from the front and not the back. coming from the engine compartment and not the exhaust pipes or defective tailgate gaskets. please advise. thank you

Smell exhaust fumes in the cabin when in motion.

When we accelerate to pass a car or speed up on any street the odor envelopes in the cabin. we are not sure where the exhaust is coming in from.

During acceleration (getting on highway, passing, etc.) the cab fills with exhaust smell. we immediately have to roll the windows down to get the smell out of the vehicle. frequent passengers and driver with asthma. we have taken explorer to dealer several times but only left it twice as they said they only had 2 technical bulletin's from ford on suggested fixes. still smells. during a google search we found this has been going on since 2011. had we have known we would not have bought this ford explorer.

Same problem as many. exhaust smell at ~3,500 rpm. no fix, second explorer with the same problem. returned last one under the lemon law program.

Exhaust vapors enter the cabin. this usually occurs when under acceleration such as passing; climbing a grade or merging onto a freeway. the frequency has been increasing. the local ford dealer could not help. i was told by ford customer service that it only affects police explorers. this is not true, unless my vehicle was originally intended to go to a police force.

During heavy acceleration a heavy exhaust smell takes over the cabin of the vehicle. i have taken my vehicle to the local ford company 3 times to repair this issue, and it still has not been resolved. my vehicle was purchased brand new--no previous owners. as i drive and accelerate now, i have to let down the windows of the vehicle to get fresh air in the vechile, as i am worried carbon monoxide may be leaking in with the exhaust smell.

I bought the car new from ted britt ford in fairfax virginia, in dec 2014. since then my vehicle has a sulfur odor when accelerating hard. also, i have been having medical issues such as head aches since may 2015. i think they may have something do with the exhaust on the car.

My 2015 ford explorer has had a foul smell with the air conditioner and heat turned on but mainly the air conditioner.when driving the vehicle for longer then 20 minutes anyone who is in the vehicle either gets a headache or becomes nauseous. on several occasions my 2 young children have even vomitted in the vehicle. after reading about this carbon monoxide issue i am appalled that i even have to drive this vehicle longer. what is it going to take for ford to do something about this.

Exhaust gas fumes come into the inside cabin while driving, mostly from the rear of the vehicle. the air conditioning or heater is on and the recirculation fan can be either on or off. failure mode can be on flat surface but mostly occurs going up and down hills. not sure if the decelleration of the vehicle is part of the cause. problem is intermittent, may not occur for weeks and then might occur 3-4 times in a day one specific example is on november 30, 2015, at 2:30 pm hvac system is set to heat, set to 73 degrees heat in dual temp control is on, recirculation is on, elevation is 3100 feet, going uphill on catron blvd towards highway 16 in rapid city, sd,(outskirts of town), decelerated from 50 to 40 mph at 40mph speed limit sign, several vehicles around us, odometer reading was 5482.5 miles, and smelled exhaust fumes in the cabin that appeared to come from the rear of the cabin, had to open both front windows for about a minute to get the smell out.

Occasional exhaust/sulfur smell inside vehicle cabin during highway acceleration or under heavy load such as towing trailer.. first noticed in 05/2017 and continues to the present day. initial complaint to dealer who indicated it was normal 'new' engine smell that would disappear over time and later conversations indicated 'unable to duplicate', plus i found later that apparently there was no documentation in the vehicle service records regarding any complaints.

Exhaust smell leaking into passenger cabin when accelerating on to highway.

When the car is accelerating there is an exhaust oder that emits through the air vents. possible co2 emission being pick up through the vents. this car has been sent to the dealer. the dealer has confirmed the rear vents are picking up the exhaust fumes.

Strong exhaust odor emitted from vehicle

I have been smelling something inside my car that smells like rotten eggs other times you can smell the exhaust my two children and i have been experiencing headaches nauseous and stomach issues my children have been sick a lot since i bought this car

On the seat belts the middle role bucket seats are both tearing where the air bag is in them and they are also hard to latch so the seat belt can't come undone unless you push the red button. on the 'other complaint' my husband and my 6 year old daughter have been getting headaches every since we bought the car new and my daughter gets nauseated and she passes out asleep in the car but it never crossed my mind about my car possibly leaking carbon monoxide inside my car until the other day when a friend made the comment to me about s recall for that on my vehicle makes models and year. i'm very worried about this and if my car is leaking carbon monoxide my 6 year old daughter has been breathing it since april of 2015 when we bought it brand new as i have been and my 4 year old son and my husband (which he doesn't ride/drive in my car much at all). i took my car the the dealer so that it can be checked out in service. what do i need to do now?

We own a 2015 ford explorer. we have made multiple complaints on the nhtsa website. this is not solving anything. if you want to know what is going on with your ford explorer, go to fordexplorernightmare.com. read the 2 key documents and leave your story. it is time that ford has to buy all of these vehicles back. obviously they cannot be fixed. ford has been knowing about this problem since 2011. now the ford engineers are going out to inspect these vehicles. this is disgusting what ford is doing to people that are stuck paying for a vehicle that is like driving a rolling gas chamber!

I purchased a brand new 2015 ford explorer xlt, 3.5 v6, in november 2014. at approximately 7,000 miles (beginning in april 2015) i started to notice a rotten egg odor inside the vehicle during acceleration, while entering the freeway. the smell would occur especially during a hard acceleration. the smell was noticeable while the a/c system was on "vent" and "recirculate" mode. on 7/6/2015 i took the explorer to my ford dealership and they acknowledged the complaint and stated there was a service bulletin 14-130 to correct the problem. their description on the fix, was that a special air-filter located inside the rear bumper area needed to be replace. they stated that the smell is coming from my evap-canister. i left the explorer there for the repair and it took them almost two days. they said, it was at least a full days labor to fix the problem because they had to remove the whole rear bumper and other parts, etc. after the repair was made, a week later, i was able to take the explorer on the freeway and still noticed the rotten egg odor during acceleration. this time the odor is only noticeable during "vent" mode when the a/c is turned on. i am contacting my dealer today about this. i am very concerned about this issue with other ford owners because these "fumes" in the cabin area most likely are affecting your health and other passengers. updated 12/06/2017*cn

Driving home up a hill with a newly purchased 2015 ford explorer my wife and i noticed a bad smell like exhaust fumes; we put this down to the new engine/exhaust burning off any factory grease etc. subsequent trips with all of my family in the suv we all experienced a foul exhaust and sulfur smell when going up a hill or accelerating above 3k rpm; there were no other vehicles in front of us to blame for the odor. we have taken the suv to the dealer 4 times now and they in conjuction with ford technical support cannot find the root cause. they have replaced/ installed: egr valve cover (tech bulletin), both exhaust down pipes, front transfer case. the dealer has no test equipment to find the problem or confirm we are smelling engine exhaust containing toxic gases including co.

Purchased in early 2015, vehicle has always had very foul exhaust odor in cabin when accelerating or engine under load. driver also noted to become dizzy and nauseous when ac set on recirculate for greater than 20 minutes. this problem has never been resolved and replicates easily.

I purchased this vehicle in april of 2015. a month or two in i noticed when accelerating and/or running air conditioning exhaust type smell/fumes fill cabin. vehicle has been taken twice to dealership (bates ford of lebanon tn) but they seemed oblivious and advised nothing was wrong. i have experienced dizziness and headaches and fearful to drive it. i have not received any recall notices and this is very worrisome! i paid over $30,000 and am still financing it and do not want this vehicle! my family is at risk! please help!

There is a reported issue about an exhaust leak inside cabin for ford explorer 2011+ and i found a solution for this issue. i tried to report this to ford but there is no luck, and ford ignored me. the issue is not from the back door or back of the vehicle, it's actually from the front. there is two issues actually who causing this, one is the hood rubber that located near to fresh air intake, i filled a silicon all over underneath the rubber and the issue almost gone 92%, a also covered the fresh air intake with duct tape and it's completely gone, but the duct tape is not the solution. the other issue is there is a leak from the engine side which causing the exhaust to fill the engine bay and the smell finds a way to leak inside cabin through fresh air intake from the front. since a alot of ford explorers has been reported they have a cracked manifold this explain why this happening. and ford is still looking in the wrong place to fix this issue i made this video on youtube to explain. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjokerz0rzc

Since i purchased the vehicle i've experienced a smell that i described as burnt fireworks. i thought maybe that it was because it was a turbo car and i've never owned one prior. i've had it in for this issue already where they replaced the seals but i'm still smelling it. i've also had my vehicle in for service when the cabin began filling with smoke via the rear ac vents. i was told that there was a coolant line above the exhaust that wasn't tightened at the factory. when it bagan to leak, the steam rose up into the cabin. there's clearly a leak somehow if the steam from the rear of my vehicle gets into the cabin. i've contacted ford numerous times but they continue to say that there is nothing wrong. i have had to pull to the side of the road because i became lightheaded. this isn't right.

You can smell the exhaust inside the cabin while driving. it is noticeable when you have to hit the gas to speed up to go around a vehicle or getting onto the interstate. after hearing on the news about the police having the same issue, i wanted to make sure that my complaint has been noted. i will be purchasing a co2 detector and placing it inside my vehicle where my 3 year old and 7 month old sit. there safety is top priority and hope a recall is coming soon. i noticed the smell when i purchased the vehicle new in march of 2015

We bought our explorer february 2015 and when i excelerate there are fumes that come inside and smells like exhaust and something burning. when i took it in they said it was the catalytic converter, but it's still doing it a year and a half later. taking it back again.
