Cabin, from day 1, always fills with putrid, exhaust type odor under hard acceleration. although the "when did this happen" field requires a date, this is ongoing.
When under load (i.e. climbing hill) or fast acceleration (passing a vehicle) there is a strong odor of exhaust in the passenger cabin. the odor is coming from the air vents throughout the vehicle. windows must be opened to get rid of the smell. this occurs primarily and was most noticeable when the air conditioner unit was operated (on recirculating air setting) and while driving up an incline. . note: although this issue is reported as occurring on the date indicated, we have noticed it multiple times with the same symptoms and circumstances!
Odor emanating from a/c vents while a/c is running and vehicle is accelerating.
Getting exhaust smell in passenger area of vehicle when proceeding down highways. we can not keep windows down when running air conditioning or heater, even in the rain.
Exhaust smell coming inside vehicle on passenger side during acceleration.
August 19:identified 3 error codes, one of which was the power steering. tech. said vehicle would be very difficult to steer if it lost power steering because of the size of explorer. service checked wiring and connections, and they had also driven the vehicle, but they needed more time with the vehicle. august 28: on a clear, warm day at about 1:00 pm, driving 6 people in the explorer on the expressway when we started experiencing problems. chiming noises were heard initially, then intermittently. the dashboard lights started blinking on and off. the entire dashboard then went black, then intermittently on with the speedometer going back and forth from 0 to around 75, then blacking out again. left hand side of dashboard displayed brake system warning symbol and low tire pressure warning symbol. the air conditioning and radio went off. awd off message appeared on left side of dashboard. right hand side of dashboard displayed: stability control, stability control system off & front air bag symbols. maximum heat started pouring out of vents. abs symbol appeared and right hand signal came on. service advance trac message was also displayed at some point. this problem episode lasted at least 4 minutes while we were driving. we took pictures of the dashboard and videotaped part of this episode. september 13: service techs can't duplicate problem, the ford hotline engineer suggested that the service dept attach a flight recorder to car in an effort to record activity if the problem reoccurs while driving. cell phone won't sync with the car since the last incident on aug 28th. service tech explained that this a network problem and flight recorder worked off the network, therefore flight recorder would be useless . the service tech informed the ford engineer that they would not be installing the flight recorder because it would be ineffective.
As i was driving home from work. i made a right hand turn (at a stop light)and heard a "thump" i got out to investigate and their was my front axle (from what i was told) was on the ground! lucky for me i was on a side street or the outcome could of been a disaster.
Carbon monoxide coming into the vehicle called the dealer they dont want to investigate the problem called the dealer about recall they said there is nothing on recall
We have exhaust problems in our vehicle. we do understand that many other explorer owners have similar problems, but nothing has been done to correct the problem yet. the last time we were at the dealers for repair, may 19, 2017, we were told that they have backordered parts for tsb- 16-0166. we still have not heard from the dealer. my wife gets sore throats and burning eyes when in the vehicle. the vehicle gets the exhaust fumes inside. the strongest is when going uphill or a fast start. also, when stopped in one spot for long. we have to drive with the windows open to air the vehicle out very often. sometimes the car interior smells and our clothes smell. can anything be done about this problem? it is a very expensive vehicle that is making us sick. some invoices attached. others would not go through correctly. Fumes in cabin when acceleration or climbing uphill grades. smell comes into explorer when ac is on with recirculate air is on. this fumes are bad, causing very sick stomach, burning in throat and nose. i'm 66 years old and this smell makes me feel real sick, burns my throat and eyes. a allover sick feeling, red face hard to breath, dizzy feeling. we roll windows down and sometime we pull over and exit the car to get air!! the smell is getting worse, we had the explorer for a year and it is awful. i'm afraid to be in car by myself so our new car don't get much use. make big payments and can't use it. this was our retirement car, now all we have is a car we can't use because it might kill us with all these fumes!!

About a year after purchasing vehicle noticed a strange odor in the cabin, seemed worse on acceleration and when windows closed. thought had an exhaust leak. i work in a service shop so i inspected for exhaust leaks before taking to dealer and did not notice any. did notice a seal leaking on the exhaust and had the dealer repair that under warranty. when dropped off the vehicle for the warranty repair i did mention to them the smell. i was told the technician did not notice any smell after the seal was replaced. intermittantly we are still get the "exhaust" smell in the cabin. occasionally i will also get nauseated after awhile especially if sitting in the passenger seat.
The car has a strong smell of exhaust in the cabin when accelerating hard.
Fume in the cabin on acceleration ford worked on the problem two time but the problem has been getting worse as time goes by. city highway makes no difference
There is a strong odor of exhuast fumes inside the car when running the ac and accelerating the vehicle. it is so strong the windows have to be put down to breath comfortablely.
Exhaust fumes are leaking into passenger cabin, particularly after acceleration
I purchased my 2015 ford explorer in april 2015. the first day i drove it i noticed a strong odor coming from the vents during hard acceleration. i thought it was because it was a new vehicle and needing to be "broken in". after about 4 weeks, i still noticed the odor. i took it into the dealership and was told they didn't know what would be causing it and didn't have an answer as to how to fix it. two months later the smell was unbearable so i returned to the dealership. at this point, i had one technician inform me of similar issues he had heard of but they had no information from ford for a solution. in august 2015, i returned to the dealership once again and this time was told there had been a tsb released by ford. they kept my vehicle for 2 weeks and performed the repairs based on the tsb. i drove it out of the service dept and immediately noticed the odor upon entering the highway. i figured there was nothing more i could do so i put the situation on the back burner until a few months ago. at this point, the odor happened on every acceleration and would linger in the cabin for quite some time. in may 2016, i went to the dealership and was told they had done all they could and for me to contact ford motor company. i did and since then, under that request of a ford motor company rep, i've had to return the vehicle to the shop on 3 separate occasions of which they have kept my vehicle for a week at a time to perform different "attempts" to fix the problem. none of which have provided a solution. all of these times, having to take personal time off work to drop off/pick up vehicle. i am still having the problem and their (fmc) next suggestion is going to be having a field service engineer "flown" in to look at my vehicle. i'm left feeling less than certain a solution is near and i'm just getting the run around.
I have a very strong sulfer or egg smell coming from inside the car while driving, i always thought it was the car in front of me but now that i see the reports i believe it may be my own exhaust fumes coming inside the car, it is worse in the summer time when it's really hot with the a/c on.
When i turn the vehicle on with the air conditioning on, an unpleasant smell comes through the vents. i have changed the air filter, cabin air filter, and used a spray to clean the vents. the spray smell overpowered the unpleasant smell for about 3-4 days. the unpleasant smell is back. i recently became aware of the nhtsa's investigation into the exhaust leak into the cabin which most likely is the problem i am experiencing. i often have my children in the vehicle with me and am starting to get concerned about what effect the fumes could have on them.
2015 ford explorer - when accelerating onto highway and speed is achieved, the driver cabin fills with exhaust fumes that smell like rotten eggs and causes eye and nose irritation and dizziness. windows have to be lowered to get fresh air in car. ford dealer made repair as directed on tsb 14-0130. the next day after the repair and when accelerating onto highway and speed was achieved, the driver cabin still filled with exhaust fumes that smell like rotten eggs and causes eye and nose irritation and dizziness. again, i had to lower the windows to get fresh air in car. therefore, the tsb 14-0130 did not solve the problem. i am concerned that the exhaust entering the cabin is exposing my family and myself to harmful fumes and possible residue in the passager compartment.
I smell exhaust fumes within the cab of the vehicle whenever i accelerate quickly. it has happened at low speeds with quick acceleration, when passing vehicles or climbing hills. i have had the vehicle since january, however, i have not yet had the dealer look at the issue.
Explorer has terrible exhaust smell upon acceleration.
I bought the car in september of 2015 and noticed upon hard acceleration such as entering the interstate or passing a car there is a smell of exhaust that comes into the cabin area and in order to relieve the smell the windows need to be cracked a little bit and this only happens upon hard acceleration.i have not had this experience with any other vehicle. i have also had problems with the transmission but they cannot seem to figure out when accelerating between 20 and 40 miles per hour you feel a shift in the transmission which for a new vehicle is a bit odd. at 10,000 miles i had to have a stabilizer bar in the front and replaced i notice a lot of heavy clunking as i drove my car around and this seems to be the problem. i i have also had issues with the headliner coming out on the driver side front door this is been pushed in and replaced 3 times and it's working on its fourth time. the issues with the transmission and the exhaust fumes in the cab and have yet to be resolved. bought the vehicle brand new and have had it in for repairs more than 15 times, the dealership says the exhaust is fixed but fumes still emit into cabin.
During hard acceleration while the air conditioning is on, a foul odor enters the passenger cabin. (such as passing another vehicle or going up a hill.) this happens every time i drive the vehicle in warm weather and run the ac. so it's an on-going condition, not a one time event.
Carbon monoxide in cabin from leking exaust
Takata recall - i frequently come close to blacking out while driving the vehicle. on a number of occasions, i have almost crashed the vehicle while driving on the highway. i work in a congested downtown area and sit in stand still traffic for close to 30 minutes twice a day, 5 days a week. i have been to a specialist trying to figure out why i am having episodes of what i thought were "extreme sleepiness". it never occurred to me that the sudden onset of tiredness could be linked to the air in my vehicle, however, now that i am aware of the situation, my symptoms make perfect sense. i am also having frequent headaches and difficulty concentrating and focusing while working. i am the cfo of a real estate company and i have noticed my ability to focus has clearly diminished. the concentration level and work ethic that brought me to my position is being compromised and despite healthy changes to my diet and exercise i cannot maintain the same level of productivity i once had. i would like the interior of my vehicle tested for carbon monoxide because i am certain that it exists and i would like to understand the level of poisonous gas that i have been exposed to.
I purchased my ford explorer 2015 on 5-26-16 the vehicle started having a strange odor coming from the air vents when the car was accelerating. ford had the dealership start checking different things on the car replaced ptu and vent hose and installed update muffler the vehicle still has odor. next ford had them seal all seams still same smell this went on all summer the dealership had my vehicle all the time then on 8-30-2016 a ford field technician came to the dealership said the vehicle was fixed and closed the case with ford. it is 11-9-16 vehicle is still smelling i have emailed the person i was in contact with and she won't respond
The exhaust fumes, are really bad, now that i know where the smell is coming from, after reading several other owner experiences. exhaust fumes are entering the compartment of the vehicle. i didn't really know what the smell was at first. but when i accelerate on the on ramp to the express way is when the fumes really get bad, now i'm roll the window down from time to time, when i on the express way and do not know if my passenger know what's going on. the area of on ramp area is an industrial chemical refinery, but again, now that i have read the many experiences of other owner, i hope the ford motor company is looking to correct the problem very soon. great vehicle, 2015 explorer limited with only 15,000 miles (retirement vehicle), i want to be a safe driver and keep my love one's safe while in my vehicle that i once thought was safe to be in. i can not and will not recommend this vehicle to anyone, if i'm asked about purchasing this vehicle for themselves. been a ford purchaser since 1972 ?
Noxious smell coming from vents while going up hill. this is an on going problem dealer has had several tries to repair.there are other repair attempts that dealer would not provide paperwork on.
There is an exhaust smell being admitted through my a/c vents while my car is turned on and being driven.
5/27/2016, we unknowingly purchased our 2015 ford explorer. since then we have experienced a number of issues with this vehicle. the first major issue is exhaust fumes, gases entering into the cabin of the vehicle while driving and upon acceleration. second, 8/25/17, this vehicle lost all of its functions (brakes, steering) while i was operating the vehicle on a busy street with my children in the car. i have made the decision this vehicle is unsafe to operate and is an accident waiting to happen. i have stopped putting my children in the car because of the fact that it is making us ill and i am scared. we have experienced headaches, nausea, lethargy, nose bleeds, stomach issues for a prolonged period of time. we have been ill more often than not. i feel this vehicle is silently and slowly hurting us. i am so frightened of what it has done to us long term. it's on a daily basis that we experience the strong foul odor and smells of exhaust fumes and gases entering into the cabin. i cannot say enough how badly it smells of exhaust. i do not use the a/c or heater because i am so fearful of what could happen to myself or my family with the windows closed. this is on a daily basis. 8/28/17, i contacted ford. i spoke with a representative in customer relations about everything we were experiencing with the vehicle. then was transferred to a manager who took my vin# while making notations. in return i was given a claim # and told she could not provide me with any information about my vehicle only that there was an investigation being conducted and, she was sorry. two months later, i have yet to receive any information from ford. sadly, i've had to research on my own and found only a service bulletin, tsb 14-0130. as a consumer i am running out of options. the vehicle itself is proof. the next step should be a recall, not me having to obtain an attorney.
Strong odor in cabin when ac is on and vehicle is under hard acceleration.
My vehicle on highway at highway speeds gets bad odors from exhaust system. i placed a co detector in the vehicle and it has shown high signs of carbon monoxide at least 20 times. i returned vehicle several times to the dealership, they said they made repairs according to some bulletin that they would not show me. the problem still is occurring. dealership told me to contact ford corporate and they cannot help me anymore. ford corporate told me they did everything they can do. they also told me if i keep bringing my vehicle in and they cannot reproduce they odor or co problem they will have to charge me for their time. because it's not a warranty issue. ford knows their is a problem if they have a bulletin about this problem. they have totally turned their back on me and are willing to risk my life and the lives of others. i rarely drive my expensive car anymore and absolutely can't on the highway. this has been on going for over a year now.
Rotten smell coming from car every time we get on the highway and the a/c is on. tried to talk to local ford and national hotline, all i got is it's an issue and we are working on it. the fumes are toxic from what i've read so not a good answer to get on a new car purchase.
Carbon monoxide inside cabin, has been in two dealers 6-times for repairs, now they say they have no other repairs they can do from ford to stop it?
Since may 1, 2016, at least 6 different times while i was driving the vehicle, the car felt as if someone slammed on the brakes, then slammed down on the accelerator throwing me forward and then back in my seat. the last two times this occured i had my minor children in the car and they experienced the same thing. the vehicle had been taken to the service department at the dealer twice and returned to us twice with them saying they couldnt find anything wrong with the vehicle. on july 1, my husband brought it back to the service department again -they asked for our permission for one of their service technicians to drive the car for a few days which we allowed. after he drove it for a few days, he experienced the same problem i had with the vehicle -stating "that if he hadn't had his seatbelt on, he would have gone through the windshield." the service department reported that they could not figure out what the problem was and what was causing the vehicle to do this. we contacted ford motor company to try to help us and on july 19 they told us that the service department couldn't locate where the problem was coming from and they want us to take our vehicle home. even though their own ford mechanic / technician has experienced the problem himself. they want to return an unsafe vehicle back to us, the customer. when my husband asked the service manager, if he would allow his wife and children to drive in this vehicle, he replied "no." so why would ford want to risk the lives of myself and my family?
Upon acceleration, the cab fills with fumes and exhaust, blowing into the vehicle from the vents. the fumes do not dissipate for 4 minutes. the problem reoccurs every time the car is accelerated beyond 2000 rms, whether from a complete stop, or in the flow of traffic.
Exhaust fumes in cabin causing severe headaches, nausea nad lethargy and passengers getting sick as well as driver -this happens every time a/c/heat on,not on start date only
I was driving today 02/26/16 from atlanta to alabama i was driving around 65-70 mph when my driver trim/molding few off .it almost caused us an accident or another car accident as wee. this needs to been recalled to the ford dealer to fix this issue .i have noticed that others had the same problem. please
Extremely strong exhaust odor in cabin while driving at 65mph, acceleration to pass, and uphill. caused my sons asthma that was under control to become worse than it ever has been. i took the vehicle into where i bought it brand new and they attemptes to fix it 3 times and blamed it on a back up camera they installed. the odor was still there. i called ford motor company and at their request i took the car to another ford dealership and my vehicle is still sitting there because they do not know why the exhaust is filling up in the cabin. it is not because of recirculated air, because i run my ac on max due to my childs asthma and the heat in florida. i told them i was going to file for them lemon law because my car has been in their shop 6 times now for the same issue!! all they want to do is get mad and tell me look in my owners manual and figure it out. what a way to show customer service and what a way to treat a customer who paid $45,000.00 for a brand new car thinkimg there wouldn't be any problems!!! i bought my car in june 2015 and the exhaust problem started in february 2016.
I've been feeling really sick after i finish driving and there is a distinct oder that fills the cabin. it's a smell of rotten eggs or some kind of perm smell. i feel very nauseous and dizzy after driving! this has been going on for at least a year! especially when i accelerate the smell is prevalent.
Burning plastic / exhaust smell inside the cab any time when accelerating
When accelerating or in motion for a period of time, the cabin gets an exhaust smell. when tested for carbon monoxide, there were 26 ppm with the windows up and the a/c blowing. on 1 occasion, 2 passengers in the back seat became ill. when thy exited the car, they felt immediately better. we have returned this vehicle 3 times to the dealer without successfully fixing the issue. the vehicle must have the windows cracked at all times to keep the exhaust smell out.
I own a 2015 ford explorer. when i start the vehicle it has a foul odor that come from the ac. it has a rotten smell. i bought numerous air freshener products to hide the odor but the odor was very bad. when i am driving and i accelerate i can smell a burning odor coming from the ac. when i am stopped the rotten odor start to come out of the a/c. on many different occasion i have gotten light headed when driving this vehicle. i am very afraid to drive the vehicle with the ac on and the windows closed. i have to drive the vehicle with the ac off and all the windows down. i have brought the vehicle to the ford dealership where i bought the vehicle to have them check on the issued. a manager checked the car and he stated that he did smell the odor. instead of trying to fix the issued they offered to sell me a new 2017 ford explorer. if i gave them my vehicle they wanted to give me nothing for it i would be basically get like a 5 grand discount on a new vehicle and they get my vehicle. i would lose everything that i paid on my vehicle because of a defect that is caused by them.
Since we have had our car 2016 you can always smell a gas like odor type fumes. if the car is driven for a long period of time you get a headache and dizzy. the ford dealership said that they have no issues with carbon monoxide in the fumes. we would like this looked into further as it is a concern. at first, we thought maybe you can just smell it when the car is first warming up, maybe its the heated seats trying to rule everything out. unfortunately, i think we are now use to the smell which is also so bad by ignoring a issue.
Carbon monoxide smell during acceleration. sometime makes me dizzy. i have taken the car back to the dealer numerous times and have been told by the service dept manager that it is a design flaw.
When excelerating onto freeway a burning smell coming out of vents into car. when idling car at stop light burning smell coming out of vents into car. white smoke coming from under hood while idling along with the burning smell. have taken it to ford many times and they couldn't find anything. was documented when i had my 1st oil change on the car.
I was sick for 7 months due to a smell coming in the ac vents come to find out it was exhaust. palm bay ford in palm bay fl said the problem was fixed. driving the car from the dealership to the house caused us to get sick. we have since parked the car and trying for the lemon law. this happens when you are picking up speed. ford and palm bay ford says there is nothing wrong and the problem is fixed. i was driving the car from 08/15 to 12/14/2016 when we took the car to palm bay ford.
Real bad exhaust smell coming from ac vents when passing another car at high speed car has been to dealer two times exhaust smell still there.
While driving up hill or when it down shifts we get a strong order of carbon monoxide and it seems as if is coming form the vents. this has been ongoing since we purchased it in 2015. we have been experiencing headaches from this issue while driving.
