Recently reported UNKNOWN OR OTHER problems on 2015 Ford Explorer

While driving with air recirculating, can smell exhaust inside car at higher rpm. while accelerating on straight highway.

Exhaust or fumes in cabin w rear ac

Exhaust leaking into passenger compartment on acceleration.

Every time i turn on the a/c there is a nasty smell that comes to life and lingers for about 3 mins. my car was purchased brand new and the smell happened right away, i brushed it off as new car smell but this is the 2nd summer in which the smell continues to fill the air when the a/c is on. this odor smells unsafe for me and my kids. i have researched and found many many others have complained of the same thing. i called the service dept. in which they told me i have to buy a new filter for my brand new car. this doesnt make sense. i called customer service to which they said they can not assist in this matter. why hasnt there been a recall yet? if ford can confirm this odor is harmless then please send the a letter stating so. i have asked for this and they state they cannot provide as such. every time i turn on the a/c i am breathing in fumes of unknown substances. how long before the odors are found to be harmful and the damage to my health and my childrens health is compromised? please help make ford responsible for this.

Strong burning/exhaust smell when the car accelerates.

Bad odor coming into cabin while driving on the highway. rotten eggs, sulfer like smell. i have a hand held carbon monoxide detector. it was going above 30ppm, was getting headaches. car dealership had my vehicle for a month. took it on the highway and the odors and carbon monoxide happened again. the dealer told me there was nothing more they could do. told me rudely to call ford they won't help anymore.

When driving down the road and accelerating the car immediately stalled and i had to pull of the side of the road for safety. i was on a country road and able to restart my car without issue till 1 week later when i was downtown driving home at 1:00am and i had to push my car one block in order to get to a safe play and get a tow. it has been in the shop for over 1 month with ford saying its a number of things it isn't. it is till under warranty and i believe this is an issue with the ecoboost on the vehicle. this in its own could have been a very dangerous situation. this could have been even worse if i was on the interstate (which is where i was headed) they initially said it was the power train module and we waited on the part for 1 month and it didn't fix anything. now they are stating its the tubing for the turbo engine (ecoboost) and we continue to wait on the part and the repair. this explorer has 34,000 and is a red ford explorer ecoboost.

An exhaust odor enters the cabin area when accelerating rapidly or driving uphill. this has occurred continuously since i purchased the vehicle in november 2015. the dealer's solution is air freshener in the cabin air filter at my expense. this is not acceptable.

When under hard acceleration, especially with ac on, exhaust gases are coming into the car. dealer mechanics blame the car exhaust from other cars, but it happens on open roads with no other traffic. latest was on road trip from va to fl, on open highway.

Exhaust fumes coming into the vehicle at highway speeds and upon acceleration. this is an ongoing/ everyday problem

My unit is suffering since day one from the exhaust issue, almost textbook to the typical description in the news; upon acceleration with the a/c on, the exhaust of the vehicle get in presumably through the back of the vehicle, which are then sucked into the a/c by it's suction units on the back and you end up smelling the exhaust gases for a while. the issue is specially present while the day is cold (mornings and nights), on climbs (inclined upwards roads) and specifically upon acceleration; it doesn't have to have the a/c max button on, the road type has no influence and its relative speed is not a factor but rather just acceleration. i took it three times to the dealer, specially after i read about the issue happening to other vehicles and they said with the modifications they did should be corrected (extension of the muffler, re-sealing the trunk door, other procedures), but it didn't!. now i'm paying for an expensive car which has fouls and probably unhealthy odors getting into the car by its own design and have no recall or real solution to my problem. please issue a recall or demand a real solution to the problem by ford. if i would have the time and money i would have filed a lawsuit as i find almost a racket that you pay for a vehicle with such a bad design flaw and no real action to solve it from ford. also, it is not the only flaw as have had to repair the links of the front suspension (still under warranty) almost on every oil change visit, three times already, and the vehicle has less than 30k miles. please help!!!!

Vehicle exhibits an exhaust odor in the vehicle with the auxiliary climate control system on. when vehicle accelerates or is driven for a long period of time with the climate control on, an exhaust odor or sulfur like smell enters the interior of the vehicle when you come to a stop. the smell is so strong as it causes severe headaches and even nausea after driving the vehicle. ford has recommended a service bulletin to fix the issue but can not pin point nor guarantee that it will fix the issue. ford has not offered to pay for this since it is outside of the warranty even though this is a know issue with 2011-2015 ford explorers.

Heavy exhaust smell coming into cabin through ac vents when accelerating vehicle. smell enters cabin whether ac is on or off. vehicle has been taken in twice for issue. issue not resolved.

Exhaust fumes entering vehicle when accelerating.

I purchased my 2015 explorer and after a few months, i started smelling strong gas odor when accelerating. i took it in, the dealer completed a total exhaust repair and now the smell is worse than it was before. the dealership continues to tell me they dont know how to fix the problem. i was getting sick for two months, headaches, nausea etc. after going to the doctor, they told me it was probably from my vehicle. i cannot turn the fan/air or heat on due to the smell so it is kept off for mine and my child's sake.

I was driving home from work (doing about 45mph with the heat on) and instantly noticed what smelled like natural gas. i rolled my windows down to see if it was outside and it wasn't. i then turned my heat off and the smell lightened. when i got home i just thought maybe it was a fluke. the next day me and my daughter 12yrs old got in the explorer to go shopping. not 10 minutes into our drive (doing 25 mph with the heat on) my daughter frantically says "i smell gas." i turned around went home. i sat in the vehicle to run a diagnostics report and started feeling slightly light headed. so i got out of the vehicle and told my husband. then i began to have a headache out of nowhere. i then contacted a ford dealer (because our vehicle is under warranty with ford) and as i explained what was going on and i mentioned the articles i read about these vehicles the person on the phone had no response other than when they had their next open appointment. so i am taking my vehicle in next week. the next day i started my vehicle without the heat on and the smell was minimal in the vehicle but when i turned the vehicle off and got out i smelled a very strong gas like smell coming from the front of my vehicle!

When air/heat is on and i am above 60mph a rotten egg or dirty diaper smells come in vents. have noticed more frequently on long trips compared to short ones

When you accelerate hard, exhaust fumes consume the cabin and makes you sick.

Have had several occurrences of nausea while driving in the last 6 months.

Although the current exhaust recall identifies years 2011-16, i experience exhaust fumes in the cabin of my 2015 ford explorer. i travel as a sale rep, i get a good night sleep, but at time find myself feeling sleepy at times on long highway trips, and at times can smell exhaust upon acceleration. i purchased the vehicle december 2010 / january 2011.

Vehicle started smelling of rottem eggs or dead rodent around 30,000 miles. vehicle was purchased in october 2014. brought to dealer in march 2017 to see if they could effect repairs. dealer cleaned out filters and tried to isolate the problem. unable to do so. smell persists whenever vehicle is closed. smell is so pervasive that entire garage now smells of rotten eggs or dead rodent. recently parked at airport parking for 4 days. upon return smell in cabin was overpowering to the degree that my wife was extremely nauseated. opening windows helped but did not solve problem. smell seems to be coming through ventilation/ac system. am extremely frustrated that action to repair is is taking so long. in reading other complaints this problem does not seem to be getting the necessary priority that it deserves.

Purchased my explorer used in february 2017, 2 weeks after purchase i noticed an odd smell after picking up speed to get on a busy highway, took the vehicle to the dealership they stated there was a bulletin out about the issue but there was no fix for the issue as if yet but there was. nothing was done for me to try to resolve this issue . now today it's all over the news about he exhaust fumes from the vehicle possibly making drivers sick & causing drivers to pass out . this is obviously a known safety issue but yet when i contacted my local dealer they act as if it's no big deal, want to charge me to do what ford has suggested to do for owners at this point beings there is no recall as of yet. it's terrible to own a vehicle that you are afraid to even drive because ford is dragging their feet finding a solution for this problem that many owners are experiencing in the explorer.

Bad smell in the car and headaches while driving and parked with engine running.

Exhaust coming into the cabin of vehicle while in recirculating air mode. feel light headed, faint and about to pass out. i am pregnant and these fumes can potentially harm me and my child and the my 3 year old as well.

Every time i am getting on the interstate and have to give it gas, i can smell exhaust in the cabin. and then while trying to pass another vehicle i can also smell the exhaust in the cabin. i reported this to the local dealer back in september of 2016 and they said that there was no recall or reported issues with my complaint.

Sulphur like smell comes through the vents inside the vehicle ..i've been putting air fresheners on the vents for 1+ years , im now getting migraine headaches which my dr. said was caused by the fumes inside my car . i went to the dealer and they said nothing is wrong with the car. i spoke to ford and they told me to go back to the dealer so they can find a remedy. the car is not safe to drive.

Strong oder or exhaust when accelerating from a stop or attempting to pass. usually have the windows up and the air conditioning on and at higher rpms

Strong odor -- similar to that of natural gas -- when idling (stop light, traffic, etc). it's been happening for months. i've read recent news stories about similar issues and thought it important to add my observation to the monitoring activity.

Exhaust odor inside of vehicle while driving. diagnosed on 2-14-17 tsb 16-0166.

Saw on the news this morning that there is a possible issue with carbon monoxide in the vehicle - both my wife and i complain every time we drive the car since we got it that we get headaches-- and believe now this must be the cause. need to get this fixed.

This vehicle is leaking carbononoxide as measured by a meter. i have had health effects consistent with co exposure. the dealer followed the tsb in an attempt to repair the co leak. the vehicle is still registering a couple leak on the meter. i do not feel that the vehicle can be driven by me safely. i have requested that ford buyback the vehicle or allow me to turn the vehicle in 6 months before my lease ends but ford has refused because they have said it is not a requirement by louisiana lemon law. i am requesting assistance in returning the defective and unsafe vehicle to ford.

After ford dealer completed the third tsb 16-0166 repair to fix the exhaust fumes smell in cabin, i still have the same problem. tsb 16-0166 repair did not fix the exhaust gas fumes smell in the cabin. the problem usually occurs with the air conditioning on, going up a steep hill, or going over the crest of a steep hill, speed is in the range of 45-60 mph, and not in full open throttle.

We have had a problem with this vehicle regarding carbon monoxide. this problem has been on-going since february 2017. i have repair orders since then, and the notice of a recall from ford's website. the representatives from ford are not helping me at all, and i do not know what else to do.

During acceleration and while the ac is on, i get co2 in the cabin.

Our ford explorer started to smell of exhaust in the cab. this smell is extremely overwhelming and has caused headaches on several occasions. when you come to a stop, the cab of the vehicle fills with exhaust fumes. this happens after driving on highway, freeway, or city streets. we took it in for repairs and it took approximately two weeks to find multiple places where there were leaks. the ford maintenance department employees sealed these leaks, but after approximately a month, the exhaust fumes have started to occur again. i have attached the form given to us by the maintenance department.

There is a gas/propane smell inside of my vehicle which requires the occupants to roll down the windows because of safety concerns. the smell is more prevalent when accelerating and using the air conditioning system. there is a strong exhaust/gas smell present in the vehicle causing sick conditions of all passengers.

Exhaust odor, carbon monoxide present in cabin. check engine light.

I am getting the exhaust smell upon accelerating. i want to be part of the complaints already in existence. this has happened several times.

At 53,000 miles i noticed the rubber trim around windows and doors was starting to degrade and detach from the vehicle. i took the car to grapevine ford in grapevine, tx. they said that was normal wear and tear and not covered by warranty.

Since january 2017, i have occasions noticed a sulfur type exhaust smell in the vehicle cabin when moderately accelerating. i have had it in for service for this problem 4 times. tsb solutions were performed the first 3 times, and in kune 2017, i was told there is no problem found and i should take it to another ford dealership for further service on this problem. since the last service date of 6/20/17, i have documented 4 more occurrences of noting this smell in my vehicle cabin.

Strange smell in cabin of car when first turn air conditioning on. my daughter describes it as "stinky feet".

Frequent headaches when riding in the car, nausea and nose bleeds. happens at different times, especially when riding in the car for longer periods of time.

My explorer has exhaust fumes entering cabin. i have dealer "fix" it once and cost me 750 out of my pocket. i still have issues and not having luck with dealer helping. act as it is just what it is.

Exhaust odor enters the vehicle when accelerating. the fumes seem to be getting worse. also the left front door panel is warped and coming apart. ford has not fixed either problem. service department blows these complaints off in hoping i don't keep calling.

Foul smell of exhaust through ventilation system when turned on. air filter changed without change in problem.

Vehicle with just over 31000 miles. sudden burst of exhaust fumes, burn eyes. difficult to refresh air even with 4 windows open. exhaust fills interior whenever stopping vehicle. very bad. i waited over 20 years to get a "nice" vehicle. very disappointed. dealer willing to correct for $850.00.

Takata recall when accelerating exhaust can be smelled in the cabin of the car. it appears to be coming out of all of the air vents. it gets so strong that the windows must be rolled down in order to clear the exhaust smell from the cabin of the car. the car also often has a very rough idle. at times when accelerating the air conditioner loses power as well. this car has been taken into a certified ford dealership 3 times now for all of these issues. none of the issues have been resolved. it is actually scheduled to go back to a different certified ford dealership for its fourth maintenance repair.

Strong exhaust odor in passenger cabin when operating the vehicle with full throttle applications (e.g., passing, climbing steep grades or merging onto freeway ramps)

Upon acceleration at high rpm (300+), a strong odor of exhaust fumes is present inside the passenger cabin. this condition is typical when accelerating onto freeways, passing a vehicle or otherwise under load. setting the environmental control circulation to recirculate interior air does not prevent the occurrence. last visit to ford dealership on 10 october 2016 to address concern found no problems. my vehicle currently has 35,544 miles at time of report. it has resulted in nausea and headaches. my wife has experienced abdominal pain that is being treated but unresolved. i question the affect of the cabin fumes on her lymphatic system resultant from exposure beyond normal limits.

Our explorer limited unit has less than 21,000 miles on it. while accelerating to pass another vehicle, climbing a hill / mountain or similar situation exhaust fumes enter the cabin. the a/c unit is on and in the recirculation mode with the rear a/c unit operating. the noxious fumes smell like rotten eggs / sulfuric acid. the only way to clear the dangerous exhaust gases is to open windows allowing for a change in the cabin's atmosphere. this is a recurring issue that can be replicated. working with the dealership we purchased from as well as ford corporate to resolve this dangerous situation. many units are experiencing this same issue. no proven repair / fix to date. how long will it take ford's engineering team to isolate the reason this occurs and provide a proven repair / recall? could it be the units experiencing this recurring problem could be coming out of the same manufacturing facility?
