Recently reported STEERING problems on 2015 Ford Explorer

I have recently heard a popping sound when i turn the steering wheel. this happens when stationary and in motion. i have had a mechanic look at my vehicle and state that the rack system needs to be replaced and that there is a chance the steering can lock up while driving. i did research and found there are recalls on ford explorers for 2011 to 20014 but not 2015. why? it is the same issue just a different year.

I left my 2015 explorer with just 31000 miles on it parked in the garage for 10 days. when i started it again, the 'check charging system ' light came on just for a moment and cleaned. i tried to pull the car out of the garage, but the steering wheel was locked. eventually it unlocked. when i started driving it, a very loud grinding noise could be heard when the steering wheel was turned left or right. the vehicle does not need to be moving for concern to happen. took it to charles gabus ford in des moines iowa, and they told me that a steering gear needs to be replaced to eliminate the noise. they installed the new steering gear, but it cost me $2234.00. when i went to pick up my car from the shop, there was another explorer waiting to be picked up as well. i asked my service advisor was wrong with that one, and he told me 'the steering'. i am a very disappointed in ford that they didn't recall the steering wheel assembly on 2015 explorers yet. there are too many complains about it. maybe they are waiting for somebody to get a very badly injured or killed to make it happen.

Driving down a highway road approximately speed of 60 mph and warning lights on dash came on "steering assist failure" and a couple others. lost total control of steering was unable to turn the wheel. vehicle was diagnosed at fremont ford of fremont michigan said to of had a faulty steering rack as its electronic when it fails it fails. well 2100$ later its repaired.

When turning on the car sometimes the " check charging system " light comes on. when it does the steering wheel locks and you cannot turn the car left or right. you have to turn off the car and restart the car and hope that the " check charging system" light does not come on. i it does not come on the steering will not lock. the steering locks only when you turn on the car and the " check charging system" light comes on. have taken it over and over to a ford dealer and they say that it is the battery, have changed the battery twice. then they say it is the alternator, have changed the alternator once. i just took it again and now the dealership says it is the power steering assembly and that it is out of warranty and it will cost about 2,000.00. this has happen many, many, many times throughout the 3 years we have had this car.

Steering started making a grinding noise at 55k miles. sound is most pronounced when turning at slow speeds. dealership and local shop confirm steering rack and pinion need to be replaced. they advised this is a common problem with ford explorers. dealership advised the warranty expired 1 month ago.

Steering fault warning light comes on then the car looses its steering like no power steering. this has happened 4 or 5 times now

The rack and pinion locked up as we were pulling out of my driveway. i was 9m pregnant and my 4yr old was in the back. cant help but think about what would have happened had it locked up going around a curve. the repair shop i took it to said this was really common in the ford explorers and they have 146 service records on this one issue.

Steering started making a "knocking" noise when moving the steering wheel. this occurs while in part or in motion. i was told by the repair shot and my 2015 explorer with 45k miles on it needs to have the rack and pinion replaced at a cost of $2100. not covered under warranty and apparently no recall for this dangerous situation.

While i was driving 70mph on a freeway, power steering stopped working. showing the warning messages on the gauge cluster. "power steering loss" "advance trac control fault" i was able to pull over to a side of the freeway safely as there was no traffic. this is an extremely dangerous problem and must be recalled. my explorer has about 53k miles.

Steering assist error came on dash along with terrain control error while driving down road. lost power steering ability. luckily it was close to home when failed or could of happened when in traffic and a horrible accident could of happened. took to mechanic and said new steering rack needed. this was a recall on the same car a few years older. car is also being taken in next week for rear suspension recall.

The steering makes loud metal noises when turning at slow speeds (like parking or tight turns). it also makes grinding noises when turning primarily to the right. the steering has locked on us twice in the last few weeks! dealer suggests that the electronic steering gear has gone bad. on google search, we see that hundreds of customers have the same problem. how can such a critical component and safety issue not be recalled and fixed by ford. dealer tells us that the steering could lock while driving causing a major accident. we are taking the car for repairs hoping that nhsta and ford can issue a formal recall of such a dangerous issue.

Takata recall i have a ford explorer 2015 mileage approximately 42,865 . i have had 2 occasions where the steering has failed. last time was august 17,2019. i had no control over .the steering . i was traveling 30 miles per hour and was able to stop the car before having an accident . i contacted paramount automotive group in valdese nc august 20 2019 and spoke to the service person about this serious issue. the service person said to bring the explorer in to be checked out. i also was able to get a ford explorer suspension recall fix to be worked in as well. i left the explorer and was contacted by the service person that the steering had to be replaced and the steering not covered under warranty at a cost of $1,750. warranty ended at 36,000. i have done some research to out that there are a large number of complaints being filed for low mileage for 2015 fordexplorers with steering issues. i have plans to contact ford customer satisfaction to this serious defected steering problem. i have concerns with the ford replacement steering that it may as well have future issues. i do not know at this time if ford has made any announcements to correct and not harm the owner. i need to make all aware that a serious accident is going to occur where someone will get hurt or killed.

I purchased a 2015 ford explorer sport with 90k miles from a ford dealer in december.a week later i noticed that every time i turned right i would hear a clicking noise. i also heard a humming noise from the wheels. i immediately took it to the dealer and explained to them the issue. i told them that if they don't fix the issue i was gonna return the car back to them. they changed the wheel bearings and the humming noise decreased. the technician said he tightened something from the spare tire compartment and that's what was making the clicking sound. months later as we continued driving the car the clicking would happen on occasion. i originally thought that it was something in the spare tire compartment. so i looked all over the place and nothing the noise continued occasionally. now in july it began happening more often. i took it to the dealer again and had to pay a diagnostic fee even though i told them its the same issue as before. now a different technician says that the steering rack and pinion is broken and needs to be replaced or the steering wheel could lock up on us on the road and cause an accident. i asked why they didn't tell me that the first time and he couldn't explain. so i've been driving a time bomb for months. the 2011-2014 model had a recall on this issue. i can't believe they wouldn't include all the years with the same issue. the steering system should be the most reliable part of the car because it ensures that you're in control of you safety. i have read many complaints on the steering rack and pinion for this vehicle.

When steering left or right at a standstill, steering makes a popping or clicking noise. my guess is it is either rack and pinion assembly or suspension parts. in addition, rear end has a bad rattle even on smooth roads. there is about 59,500 miles on the suv and it was just state inspected. we are afraid to drive it. checked complaint boards and there are many similar problems.

Started car and put in reverse and noticed that the steering was not working normally and then noticed the power steering fault assist and service advance trac notification. also at the same time, the turn signal would not stay engaged. i managed to drive 100 miles home with "manual steering" on the highway and needed to use one hand to change lanes. if this problem happened going 60 miles per hour, an accident or worse, lose of life, as what happened was unexpected and steering was very difficult. this vehicle was bought 1/2/15 and this problem happened at 26,100 miles and the repair cost $2,147.25 at the ford dealer by my house. since ford was able to replace the assembly the same day leads me to believe this is a very common problem and stock the parts and looking at other complaints online, an ongoing issue with ford vehicles in general. ford had a 1.1 million recall for this on the 2011-2013 vehicles and they never fixed the issue going forward. a recall needs to be done.

I have a 2015 ford explorer xlt and the steering rack and pinion needs replacing. it can stop at anytime causing an accident.

-failure of electronic steering gear- i have a 2015 ford explorer sport with 50,000 miles on it. 2 weeks ago i had a "steering fault assist" light come on while driving the vehicle on the interstate. i did not experience an issue steering at the time.

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 ford explorer. while attempting to make a turn, the steering lost power and "steering fault assist needs service" appeared on the instrument panel. the vehicle was taken to vaughn ford lincoln (318-335-0710, located at 835 highway 165 s, oakdale, la 71463) where it was diagnosed that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 63,000.

50k only and the rack and pinion steering column is failing.

Noise when turning or backing up on drivers side. new shocks/struts have recently been put on the front.

As we were turning into a parking space there was a popping sound so i immediately took the car to the dealer. we were told that the rack and pinion was defective which is the second time this has happened in a ford around the 40,000 mile mark. if the rack had failed at high speed it could well have been fatal.

I bought the car used in april 2019, it only has 25,000 miles. i was driving with my toddler when all of the sudden i could not steer the vehicle easily and warning lights started going off after i lost power steering. the lights were power assist fault and something about advancetrack system in which i noticed that my four wheel drive capability was not working. i was on a city street so i was able to pull into a parking lot. once i let it sit for a few minutes and started up, everything was alright. this was the 2nd time this has happened the first time, i was just exiting off the highway when i lost power steering and warning came on but it only occurred for a minute and everything was back to normal. this is a safety risk and i am afraid to drive it long distance. other than this i love this vehicle!

2015 ford explorer. consumer writes in regards to power steering failure. *ld the consumer stated while driving the steering service light illuminated and the power steering immediately went out. the vehicle was not included in the power steering recall. *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 ford explorer. the contact heard a squealing sound when turning the vehicle in either direction. the vehicle was taken to autofair ford in manchester (1475 s willow st, manchester, nh 03103, (603) 634-1001). the contact took the vehicle to the same dealer six weeks before to have the driver's side wheel bearing replaced under a warranty. the dealer performed an 100 point inspection and recommended several repairs that needed to be performed. the dealer had been aggressively soliciting the contact to trade in the vehicle and checked to see if she wanted to act on any of the service repair recommendations. regarding the squealing noise, the dealer diagnosed that the entire rack and pinion needed to be replaced and an alignment was needed. the repairs would cost $2,215. the manufacturer was contacted online and stated that there was no recall for the failure. the failure mileage was 49,100.

Making slow right handed turns, clunking sound was detected in the front of the vehicle. the ford dealer investigation revealed that the power steering rack needs replacement. the vehicle has only 61000 miles on it and the cost will be $1950.

A little over a month ago the left rear toe link broke while driving. this caused the car to lose control and go into a sideways slide, breaking the wheel hub in the process. smooth road going about 50 mph in good conditions. we got the car fixed and had to pay for the repairs since the car is no longer under factory warranty. after the ford dealer in mchenry il had it for over a week, we got the car back, drove it for a few days and suddenly we had a cracked exhaust flex pipe. we had to pay several hundred more to get that repaired. again, driven on smooth roads in the summer, nothing that would have caused this so suddenly. got the car back again after several more days in the shop.. drove it for a couple more days and the left rear toe link broke.. again... dealer this time installed the "recall kit" on both sides. luckily, this time it was at slow speeds coming into a parking lot . had the car towed back to the dealer. again.. we have had the car back for about 3 days now, and the left toe link has come loose.. again.. the car will be towed back to the dealer tomorrow because it is unsafe to drive. it was driven 3 times at low speeds around town since we got it back. my wife is now afraid to drive the car out of fear of it breaking again. this is a serious issue if the recall part doesn't work. when this part fails, this car has a severe loss of control and can very easily result in an accident. ford needs to get to the bottom of this before someone gets killed.

Noisy popping noise when steering left and right at a stand still or low speeds. this turns into a locked steering wheel in one position.

While driving recently my car would 'sputter' while at a light etc. well today it completely dies while driving (about 20mpg). it eventually restarted and i was able to drive to my mechanic. the vehicle completely died while pulling into the drive of the mechanic who will take a look on monday. also, had problems with steering unit that ford said needed to be replaced. said that would cost us about $1100 for a new module. at that time the car had 40,000 miles on it. currently has 72,000. my husband was going to by a f150 now seriously considering going with toyota. he's heartbroken as we both thought the explorer would be a reliable car.

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 ford explorer. while driving approximately 60 mph, the 'lane detection failure' message suddenly appeared and the power steering failed. the steering wheel became very difficult to turn in either direction. after stopping the vehicle and restarting the engine, the vehicle operated normally. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who found diagnostic code: c200d and advised the contact to take the vehicle to the local dealer. the vehicle was taken to jones ford of north charleston (5757 rivers ave, north charleston, south carolina), but the code was no longer present after restarting the vehicle several times. the cause of the failure could not be determined. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 45,000.

I thought the vehicle was having struts issues in the front as well as a sway bar. however i finally got an appointment at the ford dealership and they stated that the issue was caused by a failing electronic steering rack. this vehicle only have 42,524 miles on it and this should not be happening already. this could potentially fail causing you to lose power steering and cause an accident. the vehicle makes the noise when turning slowly to the right or when backing up. it will also make the noise when you are stationary and turn the wheel back and forth. the quote i received for the repair was $1,770. this is not something that should have to be repaired on a 2015 vehicle with low mileage.

My wife was driving down the road when the power steering suddenly went out almost causing her to wreck. shortly after a "steering assist fault service required" message popped up. after searching through forums and goggle it seems this is a common issue that ford refuses to recognize.

Lane keeping steering assist is electric motor assist. the rack & pinion steering gear motor malfunctioned, leaving the steering without any assist, resulting in manual (extremely difficult to steer) steering. in this case, no crash resulted, but required rack & pinion required replacement. replacement cost ~$2200.00 at a ford dealership.

The power steering froze while driving on three separate occasions over the last two days. the first was while pulling into a parking space, the second time was while turning to merge onto a busy two lane highway and the third time was while driving 55 mph merging onto the freeway. the car was in motion in all three cases and had to be put in park and turned off before steering came back. my wife was unable to turn the car when it happened to her because she wasn't strong enough to overcome the force.

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 ford explorer. while driving and attempting to turn, the steering wheel seized and then returned to its normal position. the vehicle was taken to crouse ford (11 antrim blvd, taneytown, md 21787, (877) 782-7280) where it was diagnosed that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was not notified. the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was 90,000.

Power steering stops working suddenly; due to factory mistake or faulty parts or manufacturing. possibly causing loss control and crash occurrences. unless you have upper body extreme strength you can't control the steering wheel due to this defect. there have been previous recalls but not for this year or my vin number despite the issue being the same. ford refuses to pay to repair it. also, this once repaired can happen again.

When i drive at slow speeds to pull into a parking spot, garage, turn into a drive way and reversing out of these spots, there is a loud clunk noise. when turning the steering wheel to the right.

The vehicle has approx 42,000 miles and has started exhibiting the clunking noise and difficult turning at low speed, specifically in turning right, as reported in many other complaints. looking at a $2k fix at such a low mileage with with so many other similar complaints is disturbing and amazing why ford is not fixing this.

On 4/14/19 we left for vacation and drove1,100 miles from arlington, va to key largo, fl and when we got to fl, the steering started making a clunking noise and got stuck when we were making a u-turn. after some research, i could tell it was the steering, could give out when driving and was a serious repair that could not wait until returning home in a week to get it repaired. we drove to lorenzo ford in homestead, fl. on 4/16/19. lorenzo ford knew right away that the problem was the steering. our explorer had 41,339 miles on it and the mechanic said it was not unusual for the steering to give out. he actually said it was a problem but not a recall. the repair totaled $2,335.91. i thought we were driving a dependable and safe car on our vacation, but we got to spend a lot of time getting our car repaired on our vacation. i've had numerous fords, and have always called myself a ford person. sadly, i don't like the direction ford is going and this may be my last one. thanks ford for not making quality job #1 and wrecking my vacation. you need to recall this before someone gets hurt.

Power steering failed as i was pulling away from a gas pump after refueling. power assist warning light came on and i was not able to turn the steering wheel unless i used a great amount of force. luckily i was still in the gas station parking lot when the failure occurred. the car had to be towed to a dealer.

When we turn the wheel to the right it has a loud popping noise during driving or stationary its progressing from a popping and something the steering wheel gets stuck. told by two different mechanics that the popping noise has to do with strut and cv joint and electric steering gear and rack and pinion going bad. our explorer only has 91000 miles. both mechanics say this is odd that this is going on for a 2015. that we should check for recalls.

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 ford explorer. the contact stated that the service steering warning indicator flashed intermittently and then the steering wheel seized. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an authorized dealer or an independent mechanic. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 100,100.

Driving to work and received a "steering assist fault/service required" warning message. took car to dealer, where they repaired a faulty steering gear assembly.

I was driving my vehicle down the road i went to make a turn and my vehicle made a terrible noise on the right side. the steering wheel acted like it did not want to turn. i was informed that my rack and pinnion was bad. i only have 57,000 miles on the vehicle. i researched this problem and i am clearly not the only one with this complaint. it's very strange that all models are covered except mine.if my child would have been hurt because of a faulty vehicle where numerous people have this problem i would have been devastated.

2015 ford explorer xlt, electronic power steering failed during driving. a "steering assist fault service required" message illuminates on the dash instrument panel. this has occurred 4 times in the last week. each time the failure has occurred after starting the engine and beginning to drive the vehicle. the mileage on the vehicle at first occurrence was 98,734. appointment made at local ford dealer for service.

Slow speed grinding noise when turning. in motion and stationary on all services

Driving 55mph on i-94 last night in a steady rain and check battery message came up in the left ip display. within a few seconds i lost the power steering, then the center console entertainment/info screen, then the instrument cluster went black with the headlights and windshield wipers which were on highest setting slowed but continued to operate only while in the highest setting. this scenario continued off and on for the next 30 miles with intermittent electronic steering failure, internal ip and console screen failure and exterior lighting failures. we pulled over each time and within a varied amount of time from a few seconds to a few minutes, a sound similar to a squealing belt would be heard and the system would "reboot" and all functioning would be restored for a limited time. we limped the vehicle home over the course of the next hour and a half for 35 miles as i was not leaving the car on the side of the freeway or in detroit if i could safely avoid it. this morning (sunday) i tested the battery and had the battery and alternator tested under load at an auto parts store and both were within normal parameters. belt looked good with visual inspection and 1 hour of idle and drive time close to home in damp puddling roads could not get any adverse symptoms to reappear. it will go to the ford service department at our local dealer tomorrow for a thorough inspection. this is my wife's daily driver and if no issue can be found we will be replacing the car as she would have been in extreme danger without steering, lights and ip, especially on a saturday night driving through the city of detroit's i-94 expressway.

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 ford explorer. the contact stated that the power steering failed to function and the steering wheel seized more than once. in addition, the electric power steering, low battery mode, and other unknown warning indicators flashed. the vehicle was coasted off the road, shut off, and restarted; however, the failure recurred. bruce walters ford (302 s mayo trail, pikeville, ky 41501, (606) 444-2200) was notified of the failure and a diagnostic appointment was scheduled. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was not available.

We have owned many fords in the past but after owning a 2015 ford explorer sport it may be the last. my explorer has only been out of warranty for less than a year. as soon as it went out of warranty there was a problem with the link so they said. maybe it was't a link after all. there was a loud clunking noise under my car when the steering wheel was turned. now less than a year later the clunking noise is horrible and the power steering even went out temporarily. that's scary. i took it to the ford place today and they want $3000 to fix the steering gear. this is a safety issue. are you going to wait until someone is seriously injured or killed before you issue a recall on this problem with the steering gear????? i see there are already 94 complaints about the steering issue. you need to issue a recall on this problem with the steering gear. this is serious. and $3000 is ridiculous. i want some kind of discount and this isn't the last you will hear from me on this matter if i don't get one.

While driving the vehicle it lost power steering. warning lights came on stating power steering assist fault service advance trac terrain management system fault this is not new to ford explorers apparently there was a recall 2011-2014. my vehicle is a 2015. it is a shame that ford or natsa would allow this risk to continue. i encourage you to recall any vehicles in all years to prevent accidents. my vehicle has been in the shop for a week already and when they told me three other ford explorers were fixed last week for the same problem i gasped that this is not part of a recall.

Over a period of a few days, i noticed that the power steering was becoming increasingly tight as i merged into other lanes or made turns on both the local roads and highway. there were no warning lights to indicate that there was a problem. i stopped driving the vehicle until i could have it evaluated by the ford dealer. the dealership mechanic identified a problem with the steering shaft assembly and said that it needed to be replaced.
