Problems with 2014 Ford Explorer UNKNOWN OR OTHER

On average, the 2014 Ford Explorer starts to “feel” problems with the UNKNOWN OR OTHER and its various aspects after 37 932 miles.

Recently reported UNKNOWN OR OTHER problems on 2014 Ford Explorer

We have a 2014 ford explorer that has a smell inside while accelerating. we have taken it to the dealer to have the problem corrected. our concern is that exhaust has been coming into the vehicle. we aren't sure if the current solutions in place to fix the vehicle are enough. well knowing and our family is getting sick from this current issue we just aren't sure what we're breathing inside the vehicle is safe. the smell comes when you accelerate hard either towing or merging onto the highway or even from a red light. the smell is a sulfur smell or rotten egg smell that seems to dissipate quickly but is noticeable.

We noticed a strong odor when accelerating onto the interstate. with the 2014 ford explorer still under warranty, we took the vehicular to the local ford dealership where we purchased it and were told that they did not smell or notice anything out of the ordinary. however a few months later these reports of carbon monoxide or exhaust leaking into the vehicular was reported. we brought our 2014 ford explorer back to the dealership and are told that there is an issue but no recall. for the safety of my family i will not have to pay for an issue that ford does not think is a problem.

Following ford's most recent "attempt" to stop exhaust from getting into the cabin, i did smell it again on 7/9 and 7/10. it was roughly one tenth of the strength of the last time i smelled it, but i still smelled it at 3500 rpm or greater going up hill after a downshift. ford keeps trying to keep it out of the cabin instead of preventing it from escaping from the exhaust system. can i be getting exposed to odorless carbon monoxide all the time and just smell the exhaust when the twin turbos put more air into the engine and the exhaust is undersized and leaks from the pressure?

Each time after driving our ford explorer for a length of time with the air conditioning on, my wife and i begin to feel light headed, tired and sick. my wife is pregnant and we have severe concerns about the safety of driving our explorer due to the health risk of carbon monoxide leaking into the cabin. we are now aware of this problem with other explorers and are deeply concerned for our health and the health of our baby.

We are experiencing abnormal and extensive exhaust fumes in the cab. we had a local dealer perform the no charge service offer by ford to seal the cabin and reprogram the air conditioner but we soon realized this did not resolve the issue. we scheduled to have the vehicle inspected again. we received a message (we have a recording) from the service department manager that there was definitely an issue of exhaust being pulled into the cabin that they could not explain. they said they would call ford for direction. they then contacted us to say that ford told them this is normal which is a clear contradiction that is hard to accept as a conclusion. my wife will no longer ride in the vehicle due to the serious affects from the intense fumes during acceleration. should i seek legal representation? there is a definite discrepancy in the response from the two parties.

Exhaust odor while 1) operating the vehicle with full throttle applications (e.g., climbing steep grades or merging onto freeway ramps), and or 2) use of the air conditioning system in recirculation mode both contribute to exhaust gas being detected in the vehicle. have had it in for service three times. there was no improvement after repairs.

For about six to eight months, i have been smelling a foul (rotten eggs/sulphur) odor in my car. i notice it on my commute about the same part of my trip each day, which is the point at which i am able to accelerate getting on to a toll road and other parts of my drive. it never occurred to me this might be related to my car; therefore i have seen several doctors and had a sinus ct scan to try to determine why i am smelling this odor. a family member told me just this past weekend about a story she heard on cbs that now starts to make the foul smells make more sense to me. i have also had increased headaches this past year, and have also been seeing a specialist. i now wonder if my increased headaches may also be tied to the possible exhaust issue with my car. please advise how i should proceed. i have also ordered a portable carbon monoxide sensor to keep in my car to ensure my safety until ford is able to resolve this matter.

We smell exhaust gas when the car is in full throttle, like when climbing a steep road or merging into freeway ramps, or just any sort of hard(ish) acceleration. odor is also detected when the air conditioner was in recirculation mode. this has been going on since we bought the vehicle.

I have seen on the local news that some vehicles in the make, model and year of my vehicle may contain carbon monoxide poisoning. i have been experiencing headaches while driving or riding in my car. and at times i have smelled the presence of exhaust smell while riding or driving.

Strong smell of exhaust in cabin of vehicle after driving on expressway. i get lightheaded and have headaches after driving this vehicle.

Ford explorer 2014 exhaust fumes coming into cabin. i purchased my vehicle from auto nation ford of katy, tx on or about july 12, 2014. approximately on or about october 21, 2014 began having trouble with the ac ceiling vents closing on 2nd and 3rd row seats closing. i took my vehicle back to the dealer for repairs on august 10, 2015 for the second time and third time on may 2, 2016 and since this has happened three times we know that it will break again for the fourth time. another issue that has come to recent events and the truck is currently at the service department for exhaust fumes coming into the cabin when we accelerate at more than 3 rpm's as of may 2, 2016 and many times before and we have become aware that this has happened before and we just thought it was the other cars fumes but when we rolled the windows down the fume dissipate and fresh air comes in as long as our windows are down. this has me and my family on red alert and is health hazardous to my wife age forty-two and my children age eight and seven (all have experience headaches and my wife nearly passing out while driving), to date, the dealer has been unable to correct the problem. it has been return to the service department because my daughter an wife where smelling the worst smell to date in the cabin and my daughter was coughing from the bad burn smell she described to me as burnt fumes as my wife.the co2 and exhaust fumes could be negatively impacting her health, as she has experience dizziness and headaches that have prevent her to function, and our families' general long term health future impact. ford surely has the rest of the order service for attempted repair of the exhaust fumes coming into the cabin. this problem substantially impairs the use or value of my vehicle and creates a serious safety hazard.

Nhtsa recall number: 16v245, recall date: apr 25, 2016, ford recall number: 16s18. risk to safety: an improperly welded toe link that fractures while driving could result in a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash. manufacturer has exceeded reasonable amount of time to repair vehicle, according to recall notification this vehicle is not safe to drive do to increase risk of crash. also have complained to ford for over a year to have vehicle repaired for exhaust fumes entering cabin upon hard acceleration. received numerous emails back from manufacturer that they have no repairs available and is unwilling even to attempt to repair. vehicle remains parked in garage not willing to drive.

Windshield trim blew off while driving on the highway. *tr

When accelerating or changing a/c the cars fumes enter through the a/c into the cabin of the car. the smell of exhaust is overwhelming. family has been experiencing headaches and coughing when we experience this. this happens when in stationary and in motion. this happens everyday.

Vehicle has bad fume odor that will make you light headed and has given me headaches upon acceleration especially at higher speeds like going up big hills on the highway. my vehicle was at ford twice for which they charged me over $500 to fix the problem but it still persists and they are not willing or capable to fix it properly

Galvanic corrosion on the hood of car which ford is well aware is happening . ford only wants to sand and paint even though it is under warranty. this will only happen again in two years or less , only then it will be up to me to cover the costs.

Have recently been made aware of complaints from explorer owners of a foul smell coming out of ac vents, similar to an exhaust fume, sulfur or rotten egg. however, the fume that we have experienced is more like a rancid sour odor exuding from ac vents. the smell is most noticible upon cranking engine and then accelerating. until now, no formal complaints have been addressed to ford or our dealership. vehicle was purchased brand new in august 2014. odor began to occur approximately 1 year ago. we are aware of a rear suspension toe link possible fracture recall at this time.

For the past roughly 20k miles, we have been smelling exhaust in the interior of the vehicle. so bad that sometimes we have to stop driving it, and it has made my family ill. multiple complaints have been made to the dealer, whom claims they either cannot replicate, or that it is leaking oil. i have called them on their bs multiple times, to no avail.

After stopping the car and placing the shifter in park and turning engine off i am getting an audible alarm and panel message that vehicle is not in park. car is verified to be in park as shifter is all the way forward and held in position by the detent as well as the p indictor showing its position. dealership wants to replace entire shifter assembly for $600.00+.

While driving with the air conditioning or heat on the vehicle has a strong odor of burning plastic or sulfur type smell.

My car smells like rotten eggs when ac turned on or when windows down and air on low. this happens typically while driving on the freeway. i brought my car into serramonte ford in colma on december 7, 2015. they couldn't replicate the problem. i also had a black greese leak. had to have my transfer case replaced at 64k miles???

My vehicle has had ongoing issues that date back to 10/31/2015. i have repair orders that shows the issues are consistence and the dealers that have attempt to repair them have done so to no avail. the issues are electrical and mechanical in nature. because of these ongoing issues, which includes exhaust smells. my vehicle has been out of service for over 88 days and the vehicle still have the exhaust smell.

I purchased my vehicle a little over 1 year ago and have been experiencing a foul odor, rotten egg, sometimes exhaust smell in my car when accelerating and my vehicle idols very hard. it does it when driving on a city street, or freeway. i have 2 special needs children and dont feel safe driving my vehicle. and now that i think about it, theyve been sick more since ive owned the vehicle. hmm..

9.on or about september 6, 2015, at approximately 2:13 p.m., on southbound jamboree rd., 1424 feet north of san joaquin rd. in newport beach, ca, officer mcdowell, while on duty as a newport beach police officer, was driving the subject vehicle in route to respond to a traffic collision. officer mcdowell was southbound in the number 2 lane traveling at approximately 50-55 mph. on duty newport beach police officer dan mesri was driving a separate police vehicle, and was traveling southbound in the number one lane slightly behind the subject vehicle. on duty newport beach police officer nathan farris was driving a third police vehicle and was southbound in the number one lane slightly ahead of the subject vehicle. both officer mesri and officer farris, among others, witnessed the subsequent accident sequence. officer mcdowell suddenly and unexpectedly lost consciousness within the subject vehicle. according to witnesses, and as evidenced by the dash-cam video in officer mesri's police vehicle, the subject vehicle began drifting to the left. it crossed the number one lane and then crossed the center median. the subject vehicle continued drifting left across the northbound lanes of jamboree rd., coming within inches of a head-on collision with a northbound vehicle. the subject vehicle crossed all northbound lanes, went over the curb, and struck a tree head-on. according to witnesses, the subject vehicle never slowed down during the accident sequence. this accident sequence is hereafter referred to as the 'subject incident.'

When accelerating onto highway, there is a strong exhaust-like odor coming from the vents. i have taken the vehicle back to the dealership and they cannot find any reason why the odor would be coming inside the vehicle. this is extremely disturbing as i also have my 4 year old inhaling these fumes which i believe is carbon monoxide. this needs to be checked into by fmc.

Vehicle is emitting carbon monoxide and other dangerous fumes into cabin while in operation

When the vehicle makes an acceleration it creates a "gasoline like odor" inside de cabin of the ford explorer 2014. when the vehicle was left in a ford dealership for inspection they responded by saying that a plastic component was inside the exhaust system. the problem persisted after the supposed problem was found. the problems occurs when the vehicle is in motion.

Foul smelling exhaust fumes enter cabin after acceleration. often happens when going up hill or entering the interstate. it seems to be worse when cabin ac is on re circulation. has also happened when passing another vehicle. very noticeable during summer month when ac is needed. has happened numerous times

Strong gaseous odor in and around the vehicle from time to time, similar to many other reports found in online articles. smells like something in the emissions is getting into the vehicle, and can be smelled when following the vehicle, too. odor is noticeable randomly, sometimes when in motion, sometimes once the vehicle is started, and sometimes when it is stationary. this has been occurring in this 2014 explorer limited since we bought it pre-owned in 2015. this problem was reported to the dealer and no known action was taken. if i recall correctly, they said something to the effect of, "we hear about this, but it's just the catalytic converter getting broken in." we found that odd considering the vehicle was 1 yr old when we purchased it as a pre-owned vehicle. we will be taking it back to the dealer for further inspection as soon as possible considering new reports of problems in the news. a service report is on file from may or june 2015. another will likely be with the dealer very soon, as of 2/23/17.

Gas fumes entering cabin when accelerate on the gas. leaves an odor. have taken it to dealer but can't find the problem. it still does it

My explorer has an intermittent airbag light that comes on and goes off. i've taken it into the dealer and they never find anything wrong; but the issue persists. i'm concerned an airbag may inflate incorrectly or not at all in an emergency.

Experience exhaust fumes in the cabin when the a/c is on and you accelerate, specifically when entering a freeway on an "on ramp". we have had this looked into on 3 separate occasions by ford dealers. the vehicle has been sealed and tested with smoke and the exhaust has been replaced and we are still experiencing the problem. the cabin fills with exhaust fumes and you have to roll down the window in order to get rid of it. it seems to occur when the a/c is on. we have responded to all recall paperwork. we have not been able to get ford to take ownership of this problem and completely fix it. we do have documents available should you require them.

I purchased my vehicle used in 2016. after a month i noticed a very strong smell of propane. i have since taken it to 2 shops, one which specializes in fords, and neither have ever heard if the problem occurring in other fords nor did they find any issues with the exhaust. the odor is overwhelming. today a friend sent me the link from a story on this issue that cbs had run yesterday. i'm glad to know that this is not only happening to my vehicle and hope that there is a fix for it as my entire family has become nauseous several times while riding in the car.

Recently, my wife and i noticed an exhaust smell in the cabin of our 2014 ford explorer (8k miles) when we accelerated onto highways. we brought the vehicle to ford and they told us there was a bulletin out on the exhaust issue. the explorer loaner they gave us had the problem worse than ours so i asked for something different to drive. when we got the explorer back, i still noticed the problem and brought it back to ford. they insisted that there was no problem so i went to my local fire department and borrowed a carbon monoxide meter and drove the car on the highway for one mile after testing various locations inside the cabin (for about 10 minutes while idling). over one mile the carbon monoxide level in the cabin increased from 0 to 6 parts per million (ppm). after discovering the dangerous situation i brought the vehicle back to ford who has now had the vehicle for right at 3 weeks and will not return my phone calls or update me on the issue. i am posting this so that anyone who reads this can investigate this possible serious health issue for themselves. if you accelerate the vehicle and smell exhaust, take the vehicle into the dealership to have the problem fixed. if you smell exhaust it is still getting into the cabin and is very dangerous to your health. i am very concerned ford has not recalled any vehicles (2011-2014) to make sure people are not driving around with dangerous exhaust fumes in the vehicle. i have talked to other explorer owners around town and at gas stations and they have noticed this as well. i used a calibrated co meter and have pictures of the readings.

Smell exhaust in cabin under acceleration with hvac system on especially in recirculate mode. vehicle has been to dealership 5 times with the current service bulletins performed and can still smell exhaust in the cabin. the vehicle was under warranty when first reported and the issue not resolved and ford says that's all they can do.

2014 ford explorer purchased used from ford dealership, when you accelerate to get on highway or go around a slower driver there is a strong smell that come into the passenger cabin, i assume from the a/c vents. dealership told me it was an issue they could fix & had my auto for 3 days & it is not solved. also told me to only run my a/c on re cert as not to pull in outside exhaust fumes from passing autos. this is not the case it happens every time no matter what is or is not running in the vehicle. i get headache from it - learned to roll windows down when accelerating or right after. this is scary since we are traveling on a long road trip w/grand children this summer. i read several things about class action suit -i may need to join that since ford seems to do nothing. if this is carbon monoxide who has to die before someone takes action & makes them do the right thing.

Since the explorer was purchased new in 2014, we have experienced strong exhaust fumes in the cabin area after acceleration in excess of 3000 rpms. over a year ago, during a routine service visit to a ford dealership, the technician advised us that ford was recommending a solution involving placing "patches" om the exhaust system. we agreed for the procedure to be done and after that did not experience the problem again until the last two months. if before accelerating, the vent and air conditioning system is completely shut off until acceleration is completed and approximately 5 miles have been traveled, the odor is not detected. we have described the reoccurrence of the problem to the local dealership and they have checked the patches and reported that they are still intact. they cannot offer any other solution and we fear that the fumes may be hazardous to our health, as we cannot always predict the need to accelerate.

Vehicle was purchased in jan 2014....within a short time, i noticed a strong exhaust smell when rapidly accelerating (@ 3500+ rpm). i ensured the outside air vents were closed, but the odor persisted during acceleration. since the vehicle was driven mostly in town, i didn't pay much attention. in feb 2015, i was diagnosed with throat & lymph node cancer in the neck. treatment consisting of surgery, radiation and chemo affected my sense of smell (& taste). i focused on improving my health and didn't worry about the smell.....choosing to believe ford would notify me of a recall. since this hasn't happened, im filing a complaint. my concern is that the smell continues. my other concern is that i've never been a tobacco user, and my cancer is hpg in origin (meaning it came from environmental toxins or some non tobacco source). it makes me question how the exposure to the exhaust impacted my health. (& if it is setting me up for a relapse)

When you accelerate at higher speeds ie on the freeway the car is filled with exhaust smell.

Awful odor coming into the car - smells like exhaust or something rotten. i get terrible headaches and will get sleepy while driving. found myself bobbing my head almost falling asleep. the headaches will last after i stop driving the car. been going on for close to 2 years. mainly happens on highway driving (which i drive 270 everyday to work).

I recently read an article in the sfgate.com regarding complaints to the nhtsa associated to the ford explorer and fume smells coming from the engine and/or exhaust into the cab of the car creating a hazard type situation for the drivers. i would also like to file a complaint to be added to the other existing complaints with the nhsta regarding this issue. i purchased a new 2014 ford explorer from the hansel ford dealership in petaluma. within a few months i became aware of a fume type odor within the cab if the vehicle. i contacted the dealership and started trying to identify and resolve the issue. the fumes were causing dizziness and nausea on long drives. passengers also complained of the fume odor. after several attempts to the service department with the car out of service and many months there was no solution. unsatisfied i decided to file a complaint with the better business bureau in 2014 for the fume smell along with some unrelated issues. i was forwarded to arbitration where it was judged by the arbitrator that no action was to be taken. i currently still own the ford explorer and experience fume smells. as mentioned above i would also like to file a complaint in regard to this fume issue. i can provided supporting documentation if needed. please contact me directly. thank you.

After higher throttle use for acceleration, there is noticable exhaust odor in the cabin. this dissipates after a few minutes of normal driving and venting with the windows down. city or highway speeds. noticed after purchasing vehicle 12/2014. personal research has found that ford's tsb's have not solved the issue for people having the tsb work done.

Sometimes when driving the vehicle, i smell exhaust fumes in the vehicle cabin. this occurs randomly. i notice it more frequently when accelerating between speeds upwards of, and above 45/50 mph and mostly on the highways. the vehicle is serviced regularly as per ford's recommendation by the same dealer where it was bought in november 2013 with 0 miles on it. this has been ongoing since the vehicle was bought.

Exhaust smell coming in thru ac/heater system especially when excellerating or just driving normal. it always happens when ac/ heater is not on. the ford dealer has tried 3 x to fix for me and even contacted fords main office for complaints or issues the locals can't figure out or fix but got know i out on his to rectify issue. i noticed it after first buying car 11/2014 but thought it was just coming from car in front if me. then i noticed it when on road all alone.

Exhaust emissions leaking into cabin in motion

Carbon monoxide smell when accelerating.

Vehicle is emitting carbon monoxide and other dangerous fumes into cabin after acceleration. causing my asthma to flair. my wife and kids have headach when in car with me. i been having breathing issue since i purchased the car.

I have a 2014 ford explorer sport and whenever the vehicle accelerates it severely pulls to the left. the vehicle with track straight until you step on the gas and it pulls severely to the left requiring me to compensate by while driving. i advised the dealership on 10-8-14, 10-18-14, 12-4-14, on a march oil change with ford, 1-7-15 and 5-18-15.the dealerships initially denied the car had any issues that were abnormal but eventually they admitted it does pull to the left but it was normal according to the ford engineers and nothing could be done to correct it since it was a natural characteristic of the vehicle. i did not agree since i have driven other vehicles of the same make and model that did not perform the same as my vehicle does. i also spoke to various ford service technicians that indicated they had never encountered this issue and they assumed that it couldn't be torque steer since the intelligent 4 wheel drive should correct any wheels that were not spinning at the same speed as the others causing the vehicle to pull in one direction or the other. however, the dealership indicated they could only go by what the corporate engineers advised them and that was that the issue was normal despite the vehicle being rated for a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds. i also haven't been given an explanation on why the left tires on my vehicle are worn out only on the outside of the tire exactly in the direction the car is pulling to. the sever pulling to the left is not a minor think and the car will move by the feet to the left veering out of the lane unless i compensate while steering, yet it drives absolutely straight if i let off the gas and i can't imagine towing anything behind this vehicle with these abnormal driving conditions.

a few months after purchasing our 2014 explorer, we noticed an exhaust/sulfur order in the passenger compartment following a medium acceleration entering an interstate highway. we reported the odor to the dealership and turned the vehicle in for repair. dealership was unable to recreate the order so nothing was done. a few months later, under similar circumstances, the odor returned. once again, we turned the vehicle in for repair. the dealer performed a repair based on a tsb. a few months later, the odor returned and once again turned the vehicle in for repair. the dealer performed a continuation of the same tsb. a few months later, while pulling a boat, the odor returned. once again, we turned the vehicle in for repair. the dealer owner and the service tech drove the vehicle for several days and were unable to detect the smell. the very next day while pulling the boat, the odor returned. the dealer now says they don't want to perform the last part of the tsb because if they send ford a part that's not defective, ford will charge them back for the part....meanwhile i'm stuck driving a vehicle that may be putting sulfur and/or carbon monoxide into the passenger compartment. the dealer wants me to bring my boat and vehicle in so they can test it which isn't going to happen because if they wreck the vehicle with the boat, my insurance has to cover it through the permissive use clause and my rates will go up.

Exhaust fumes there is an exhaust type odor noticed in the vehicle when releasing the gas pedal after accelerating.
