When accelerating hard, exhaust fumes blow into the cabin from the ac. called the dealership within a month after buying the vehicle and was told that it was because the car/engine was new. i'd never owned a new car before so i took their word for it. however, after the issue kept reoccuring for 8+ months, i brought the explorer to the dealership and told them i wanted it checked out. i was informed that nothing was wrong and i could try using a fuel additive to help clean the engine. any time i accelerate hard, i pretty much just have to roll down the window or i'll start getting light headed. it has reached the point that i'm now looking to get a new vehicle. i'm amazed that despite multiple lawsuits against ford, these explorers have yet to be recalled.
I am noticing a smell coming out of air vents. occurring since as far back as i remember but don't recall exact date when i started questioning the smell.. the smell is a burning smell - not electrical but almost like hair/hair dryer when it gets hot. i notice when i accelerate to get on expressways and/or if i'm going up a hill (basically when i go into high gear). my husband was in the car at a time recently and so i asked him if he could smell it and he immediately said it was exhaust coming in through the air vents. i'm not sure if i can smell it more when the air is on and the windows closed but due to allergies and respiratory issues i more times than not drive with windows closed and therefore smell it quite often throughout the year. i am not sure if directly related or not but last two years i drove 12 hours to florida and by the time i go there i had headache and breathing problems and continue to struggle with that more often than i ever have before. i'm worried that this exhaust into my car is magnifying my health issues. regardless, it is a danger to have this exhaust coming in through the car. i am taking to ford this coming friday. i stopped in to talk to them and they said they were not aware of issues like this. i googled the issue merely as "ford explore exhaust issues" and was shocked and horrified by the fact that it appears very common and that a civil suit was filed in florida. right now they are saying warranties should cover the fix but i've read where the fix isn't working either. i will see what they say once they have my car but anyone having this problem needs to report it so that it can be rectified by everyone having this vehicle during the years noted in the claims! in just coming to this site alone i see that several others are having same issues. i don't pay this much for a vehicle for it to make me sick!
There is a strong exhaust odor coming inside the vehicle with all of its windows up every time after a heavy acceleration, regardless of whether or not the a/c ventilation is on or not. the strong exhaust odor is inescapable afterward while still in motion on a city street or highway or while stopping after the acceleration. this has been a consistently repeatable issue with my vehicle since purchasing it as brand new. my dealership did not find a tsb and offered no resolution for the problem.
While stopped with air conditioning on the cabin of the vehicle fills with exhaust fumes. this makes my family and me sick, feeling nauseous with headaches. as a single mother i use my vehicle not only to get my family around but also as my livelihood. i am a lyft driver and this negatively affects my ratings from my customers who can smell the fumes.
Every time i drive my 2014 explorer i am having an issue with a horrible exhaust smell that is recirculating back into the vehicle. i am unable to drive with my windows down and typically having the air on makes it worse. there have been times where out of the blue i have gotten very nautious and a very bad headache and my eyes feel as if they want to go out on me while driving over 30 minutes long. i fear this smell can not be healthy for myself or my small children. i have taken the car in several times to have it looked at for this issue and for some reason the dealership is the only ones who can't smell it! yet everyone else that gets in can't. coincidence i think not. the car is in motion when this smell occurs. and it is a very destinct smel. i have documents for my complaints but i would need to scan and email them to an individual. and i also have an email between myself and the owners of the dealership i bought the car at stating my concerns and my issue i am having. believe it or. it i notice the smell the same day i drive it off the lot. took the vehicle back the next day for them to tell me it was normal because of the chemicals they use in the engine. i don't know much about cars so i took their wood for it.
During high acceleration, with or without ac on, there is be a strong order of exhaust in the cab. if the acceleration is continuous for some time, i roll down the windows...to be safe. on a scale of 1 to 5, 5 being really bad, i would rate a 2- annoying.
My car emits an exhaust smell when i accelerate hard like when i merge on to the highway. it gives me headaches. i've had it repaired for this three times now and i am worried because my car is almost out of warranty. at first they told me it was my new engine burning off oil, but my car has 34k mikes now.
The vehicle has a strong exhaust smell (sulfur, rotten egg, improperly burned fuel, etc) coming into the cabin of the vehicle when going uphill, fast acceleration or passing a vehicle. i have carried the vehicle to the ford dealer and reported this complaint several times. on my last complaint to the dealer, the service department stated there was a factory tsb issued for this problem. the dealer ordered the parts for the tsb an we carried the vehicle back to the dealer and left it for two days for them to complete the repair. the odor problems still exists. i have a 4 year old granddaughter with asthma and other breathing problems. i have carried her to school and picked her up everyday in this vehicle for three years now. i wonder if her health could be affected by this defect?
This car cannot exceed 3000-3500 rpm. if i exceed it, a strong exhaust stinking smell comes through the a/c-ventilation system. it seems like the exhaust fumes go directly to the a/c system.
Exhaust odor in cabin after hard acceleration.
Upon acceleration exhaust enters the vehicle cabin. sometimes exhaust enters the vehicle cabin without acceleration. i thought i had reported this before. *tr
Each time after driving our ford explorer for a length of time with the air conditioning on, my wife and i begin to feel light headed, tired and sick. my wife is pregnant and we have severe concerns about the safety of driving our explorer due to the health risk of carbon monoxide leaking into the cabin. we are now aware of this problem with other explorers and are deeply concerned for our health and the health of our babies.
Exhaust fumes coming through a/c vents
Exhaust fumes entering cabin upon acceleration, such as entering interstate or passing another vehicle.
I purchased my explorer in may of 2014. the first time i accelerated and reached 3000-3500 rpms (a usual passing situation) i experienced a strong exhaust order inside the vehicle. although not the usual "burning off" smell of a new engine, i initially dismissed the odor as something associated with a new vehicle. after several weeks and many instances of exhaust odor i knew something was wrong. i could not even accelerate up a hill just to keep pace with traffic flow without needing to open windows to eliminate the toxic smell. i first complained to my local ford dealership during a routine service oil change. some repairs were made in may of 2016.. this repair did nothing to solve problem. so in september 2016 the dealership re-sealed the rear of vehicle. it was fine for two weeks. for a few weeks after that there was a slight exhaust smell but as time has passed there are times when smell is stronger. my husband and i have had explorers since 1992 and loved them and never had any problems. i hate this 2014 explorer!! please note that i have documentation (receipt/statement from ford dealership). also note that this is an ongoing problem; therefore, i can't note a specific date. because the date field is required information i selected june 2014.
Bought this 2014 ford explorer new the last of may, 2014. immediately upon acceleration smelled exhaust. thought it was coming from outside air. the smell stopped when we quit using the air conditioner. the smell started again this summer when we started using the air conditioner.. we finally realized that it was our vehicle and not outside air. took car on vacation and it was so bad it made us all sick. have had it to the dealer two times. the first time they said they could not find anything wrong. today, we took it back as it is so bad i am sick. they admitted there was a known problem but no fix. said there will be a fix in the near future. the carbon monoxide is so strong at random times that we are getting afraid to drive it. it seems to be the worse on sudden acceleration, such as pulling out into traffic. something needs to be done as this is very dangerous. we were sick during vacation as well as the lady who was with us....updated 11/04/15 *bf
We have been having exhaust smells in the cabin since we bought the vehicle and now i see there are many others. i want to sue ford and get my money back for the vehicle.
I have had a problem since i got my leased 2014 explorer, when i hit the gas hard it would smell of exhaust fumes, at first i thought it was because it was new and would go away so i used to open the windows to let the smell out but it was quite bad so i had to pull away more slowly to avoid it or have a bad smell of fumes in the car, i would open the windows but its so hot in florida and it lets all the a/c out, my girlfriend kept telling me there is something wrong but i kept saying it will probably go away, i worked at a ford dealership and i asked the service department if they have had other complaints too they said there was nothing wrong, however she was right there is a problem and it has not gone away i will take it in on monday again and have them drive in the car with me to smell the fumes too then they may be able to fix it. ford have know about this problem for quite some time and they acted negligible in my honest opinion because they have know about this complaint why would they not inform customers who have purchased these vehicles to get them checked out for their safety and the long term effects from carbon monoxide fumes it could lead to cancer or respiratory issues and much more, there should be a recall for safety sake.
Exhaust fumes can be smelled when we start veh. and when we have rapid acceleration. mentioned to dealer several times, was told very few others have had issues and no recall for item as of yet... that was last year in 2016. date below on when it happened was when we purchased from dealership new.
Exhaust fumes leaking into the passage cabin of the car when driving
Upon heavy acceleration (to enter the freeway, for example) a strong odor of exhaust fumes enters the cabin. it is necessary to open a window in order to breath again! this occurs every time upon entering the freeway, and if/when passing another vehicle on the highway. *tr
Since we bought the car in 2014 my daughter has off/on complained of nausea and headache when sitting in the rear (third row) of the vehicle. i brushed it off as car sickness but have now seen reports of others with the same problem. i am concerned if we have a malfunction in the exhaust system. i don't want any of my family breathing in toxic fumes while driving and would like ford to step up and have the vehicles tested for those of us who have had issues.
Exaughst fumes off and on
Exhaust smell comes into cabin upon acceleration. must open windows to clear the smell. ford has worked on vehicle three times to no avail. this has been occurring since the car was purchased new.
When driving my 2014 ford explorer at any speed and on any terrain, the exhaust fumes enter into the cabin of the vehicle. the odor is extreme, causes headaches, nausea, and tends to burn my eyes as well as my granddaughter, who is with me most of the time. because there have not been enough people complain of this problem, and because ford has not recognized that there is a problem, my dealer was not going to attempt to fix the problem. finally they have agreed to spray the under part of the exhaust with a rubberized sealant that was used on the 2013 models for the same problem. if this does not work, which i have read was not successful on the 2013 , i don't know what to do. the exhaust order is horrid and i fear the health implications that may arise. *js
When accelerating vehicle with the ac on, and in internal air mode, there is a smell like burnt rubber, or fumes that fill the entire car. i have to avoid accelerating too fast, or turn off the ac before hand to prevent fumes from entering car. this has been happening since i purchased the car in 2013. i thought it was just cause it was new, but as it's still happening, and others are having this same problem, i am reporting it.
