Problems with 2017 Chrysler Pacifica ENGINE

On average, the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 18 789 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2017 Chrysler Pacifica

When the vehicle is in motion, it feels like the transmission slips and the car will "buck". it will slow so hard that it feels like i've been rear ended. this mostly happens at low speeds. the car will also lose power at low speeds, such as accelerating through a turn. the car will lose power, and pressing harder on the gas pedal doesn't do anything. its a dangerous situation, as sometimes i'm turning into traffic and the car just won't respond. i've taken the car back to dealer 3 documented times, and they keep telling me its a software update that's needed. they supposedly do the software update, but the problem persists. its not a safe car to drive.

Vehicle was recalled due to pacifica's stalling creating dangerous situations, van was take to dealership and software updated. our van had been having many transmission issues, mainly hard shifts that shifted so hard it felt like the vehicle was rear ended. after the software update, our family was on an on ramp to the highway and the vehicle suddenly just stalled and stopped. the vehicle finally began moving again after what seemed like a long time but was most likely 5 - 10 seconds. had a vehicle been following us it would have resulted in an accident without question. the van made it home and has been parked in our garage as we feel it is unsafe to drive. chrysler has been contacted and is looking into it. we bought a new vehicle and this one because of the many safety features, unfortunately we are left with a vehicle that puts my wife and three kids in danger.

As of today, my new van has been in service 13 of the 15 days i have owned it. not even 12 hours after bringing my new van home, i noticed some lagging/slight jerk after braking going around 20 mph. the next day, in a neighborhood (thank goodness) after turning right after a stop sign, the check engine light came on with a ding and blinking and i was unable to accelerate. i coasted into my friends driveway to put in park and the van began to shake. this went on a few min and because i was on my way to work, i left the driveway and continued on my way for 10 min. the check engine light came on two more times after that. after four days in service, they finally concluded it was the o2 sensors and replaced all of those. after it was fixed, my husband couldn't even make it home before the check engine light came back on. as of yesterday, computer modules have been updated and the check engine light still comes on and they can't pinpint where the misfire is happening.

Purchased vehicle in august 2017 and have been experiencing problems since then. grinding noise started to occur around 1000 miles. it would occur intermittently around surface street driving speeds. sound appeared to come from driver side. harder grinding noise occurred around 7000 miles intermittently, with it occurring both in cruise control and out of cruise control. lurching forward when shifting gears also occurred around the 1000 mile mark. was told this was "normal". but how can it be normal when the vehicle is brand new. was told the softer grinding noise and louder grinding noise were both normal and result of power steering. however, i wasn't ever steering when the sounds occurred. lastly, the biggest complaint is that the car stalled twice around 13,000 miles. both times at the stop-light (thank god) and accelerating. first time the entire electrical component shut off. placed the car into park and pushed the "start" button again. the second time the car would not accelerated, instead lurched forward as if we were being rear-ended, made a loud clunk noise and just stopped. both times no accidents occurred thank god. regardless, the safety of my family should not at this much risk when we purposely bought a brand new vehicle with all safety features.

On 2-1-18 we took our 2017 pacifica to nearest dealer to get nhtsa recall id number : 18v049 fixed. they did not have a fix for it yet & could not loan us a car when our fix-availability date was not known--maybe early april or even over in the fall. fca expected us to keep on driving it; but my wife and i both were afraid of it, as ours failed to accelerate when leaving a restaurant & pulling onto a busy street. the accelerator was depressed the 3rd time before it responded; and when it did, it took off really fast and even screeched the tires. we were afraid to drive it! on 2-1-18 we left it with dealer & told them to call us when fixed. in the interim, we rented a dodge van, closest to pacifica as they had & returned it on same day, 2-21-18, as the dealer called & said car was ready. i feel like fca was leaving potential accidents on the highways being driven by unsuspecting drivers. i have asked fca to reimburse us for the rental expense, as from my lifelong experience as an auto mechanic i immediately knew our car was dangerous to drive. this recall was not as simple and non-deadly as a recall to fix a drooping headliner on one corner--it involved a potentially even deadly crash that could happen at any moment. i feel that i am not asking too much to ask fca to pay for our rental, which by the way was a lesser car than ours--a dodge caravan. we both will soon hit 80 years old : such was the reason for searching for the certified used pacifica with only ~16000-17000 miles on it. chrysler's reimbursement dept. called me today--i've been begging since last of february--and told me they would not help me. what else can i do? please help : we had to put the rental on a credit card, fully expecting fca to do the right thing and repay us. but we now have to be responsible for what i think they should even be happy to pay for.

Van loses ability to go forward while driving. dash lights all come on and engine begins to cough and stutter leaving me stranded in traffic. dash codes include "service electronic stability control, engine light, "parking brake temporarily unavailable," and other dash icons. it will move forward at idle speed only-no accelerator. i have had it towed to chrysler dealerships 3 times and was able to drive it in a fourth. this issue has nearly caused 2 accidents-one of them with the potential to cause serious harm. while moving in traffic the van stops going forward and decelerates quickly causing traffic behind it to have to swerve to avoid hitting it. it has also occurred in the middle of a turn from a stop onto a state highway. this instance required other drivers to swerve into another lane and onto the shoulder/curb to avoid hitting me or vehicles in other lanes. it has occurred immediately when starting the van in a parking lot. it has occurred at low speed in a subdivision. chrysler refuses buyback and continues to tell me to drive the vehicle. all recalls have been done, the pcm has been reprogrammed/replaced 4 times, the "harness" has been fixed/replaced 3 times. both of the sliding doors have had to have the motors replaced on separate trips to the dealership. this vehicle is an electrical nightmare and chrysler is not dealing with it. this began at about 14,500 miles and within the 1st 7months of buying the vehicle brand new. i have been trying to get this resolved for 6 months with no help from fiat chrysler or the dealer- shuman chrysler. they continue to make it run and let me drive it for a short period until it stops again. my family is going to be seriously hurt in this vehicle and there doesn't seem to be any recourse.

Vehicle's engine without any warning has shut itself off on multiple occasions. vehicle was at cruising speed on 3 occasions with speeds at approximately 30-45 miles per hour. vehicle is currently at the chrysler dealership and service advisor has advised that nothing can be done until the pcm software is released. dealer has advised me to return my rental. totally and 100% unsatisfied with my chrysler purchase.

The engine shuts off while driving causing the vehicle to come to a sudden stop because of loss of power. the vehicle had to be changed to park before it could be started. this issue happened would happen on a full tank of gas and continuously until the fuel level was ran down.

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 chrysler pacifica. while driving approximately 45 mph, the vehicle suddenly accelerated and decelerate before going into limp mode. while in limp mode, the vehicle would not accelerate past 25 mph. the vehicle was towed to midway dodge (4747 south pulaski rd, chicago, il 60632) where it was diagnosed that the valve body and transmission harness were faulty and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the contact was informed that the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 18v049000 (engine, electrical system). the vehicle was not yet repaired. the failure mileage was 35,000.

This van has staled on me 4 separate times now, twice putting me in a very bad area for a head on crash and 1 severe read end crash. i have had the van in the shop multiple times, this last time since 4th of march to current. 1st time i was driving about 30 mph on a main city street, pulled out of side street and the van just stalled. i have no power steering, brakes, nothing, by the time it stopped rolling i was in the oncoming lane of a very busy street. 2nd time i was dead stop at a light, the light changed and they van didnt move, had the pedal to the floor and nothing. 3rd time i was leaving my home, pulled out onto the country road on which we live, started up the hill, lost power again, took me in the oncoming lane, which if a car or truck came around the bend they wouldnt have tiome to stop[, logging truck was roaring up behind me, dont know how he missed me, all the time on his horn. i have talked with chrysler escalation dept. and they offered to do a buy back.. went to dealership today and what chrysler offered was 50% now on the buy back and the other 50% when they resale the van? the dealership wont except this offer. its unethical and unsafe and they want no part of this. chrysler is aware of the problem with no fix at this time. i am no getting back into that van nor do t i don't want to be their 1st fatality nor do i want to be one of their statics.

I brought my car into the shop on friday february 2, because i had experienced on 2 separate occasions a stall. once when i was turning out of my subdivision, so thankfully at a slow speed, however, the car stalled in the middle of a busy road that i was turning onto. the second time, i was pulling into the gas station, decellerating at about 30mph. i had no idea about this recall, i just knew that i needed to get it fixed, as i have 3 children that ride in my car every day. once i arrived to the dealer, i was notified that there were 2 recalls for my vehicle, and that they wouldn't be able to fix either of them until april. i have owned the car for less than a year, and am terrified to put my children in this vehicle. chrysler has informed me there is nothing they can do for me. that they will fix it in 2nd quarter of 2018. this is not ok. 2 saftey recalls and chrysler is not doing anything about it. i know there must be others out there that are thinking this way as well, and that we can come together to get this taken care of. i will not wait around for my car to crash while i'm driving due to a stall and a recall that is not being fixed for 3-4 months.i am not impressed at all with chrysler and will make sure they are held accountable.

We are on our second pacifica after the first was bought back by chrysler due to major electrical issues (vehicle would not start or function correctly, dealer couldn't fix it). now on our second pacifica we have had constant transmission issues...first transmission started slamming into gear (feels like you are being rear ended by another vehicle, this can be at slower speeds < 20 mph while going straight or turning), they reset computer, that didn't fix it, so then they replaced the valve body in the transmission (2 seperate shop trips). a couple months later it started slamming into gear again (slow speeds < 20, turning and going straight), so they replaced the transmission after putting us in a rental for another month, about 6 months later this transmission had the same exact issue, slamming into gear at low speeds (< 20, turning or going straight). so we are on our 2nd pacifica and the 3rd transmission now and are still having the same issue as we initially had (slamming into gear like you are being rear ended at slow speeds < 20 going straight or turning)! there are serious issues with this transmission that chrysler needs to resolve! this is not safe to drive the way it is, because you don't know the situation you will be driving in when it happens.

Engine shut off while driving at approx. 25mph on a snow covered street in the dark. lost all power and electrical systems and was stranded in middle of street with traffic all around. engine restarted after a number of attempts. vehicle had previously been updated with recall to address this issue in january of 2017 (u01/nhtsa 18v-049). contacted chrysler and was told they are aware of the issue and expect another software recall to be ready in april. they requested the vehicle be taken out of service and provided an rental car until update will be made available.

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 chrysler pacifica. while the vehicle was stopped at a traffic light, the check engine indicator illuminated and the vehicle shut off. after a few minutes, the vehicle was able to be restarted. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for diagnostic testing and repairs. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 300. *bf *tr

I was driving in my residential neighborhood, i had slowed down at a corner to let a child on a bike pass me by. when the child passed me, i put my foot on the gas and the car moved and then stopped - everything shut off, the lights, the engine, everything. i am not sure what happened next- people behind me were honking like crazy and i it took me a few seconds to figure out what to do next. i put the car in park and pushed the start/stop button and car started again. there was an error message on the dashboard (the a with an arrow and exclamation point), i drove straight to the dealership and left the car with them. the consumer stated the uconnect stopped working as well as the airbag. *js *js

While waiting at a red light my auto stop/start system automatically activated as usual. however, this time when the light turned green the engine did not automatically start. instead, the vehicle stalled. the car was in drive and my foot was on the brake pedal. a warning chime alerted me to the problem. also, a message instructed me to turn the car off and the put it into park and restart it. after turning the car off and then on the car moved.

Brand new... owned less than a month... 750 miles...we live at the top of a very steep hill with a sharp curve at the bottom. i reversed out of my driveway onto the street and shifted the van into drive. i felt the car go into gear and i started rolling down the hill, as it's a steep incline you pick up speed quickly. as the van gained speed down the hill something felt "wrong" and i suddenly realized i wasn't in full control of the vehicle. with the sharp curve quickly approaching i stomped the brake and brought the van to a stop. i put the van in park at the bottom of the hill and tried understand what was going on. i put the van back in drive, felt it go into gear but when i tried to accelerate nothing happened. put in it reverse, felt it go into gear and it started to go backwards a little herky jerky but when i pressed the accelerator nothing happened. i had to put it back in park, turn it off and then restart it before it i could drive it back up to my house. i took it to the dealership the next morning. turns out it was the day after the dealer received notice of the recall. i was told my vin number fell under the recall, my pcm needed new software and they couldn't do anything until chrysler provided the fix which wasn't expected until april and they couldn't even sell the ones on the lot. call chrysler! i have called chrysler almost everyday for the last 2 weeks and all i get is a "sorry but i can't do anything, waiting to hear from the regional supervisor". i live in atlanta and if that happened on i-285 (5-6 lanes) you would be roadkill! there is absolutely no way in hell you could stop the car, put it in park, stop the engine and then restart safely. at this point it's a $32k rolling death trap that chrysler won't/can't deal with... 100% unsafe for my wife and 3 kids!

Stoped at a traffic light, the engine auto shut off like normal at a light, but when green light came and gas pedal was pressed, an alert popped up on dash saying parking was engaged. put into park and tried to release parking brake parking brake actually engaged. could not disengage afterwards, foot brake was held while attempting to disengage parking brake. tried turning vehicle off and on with no result 1st time. while engine on, tried to reset parking brake again, holding foot brake, no joy. drive selector would not switch to neutral in order to move vehicle off road. turned vehicle off and on again, then was able to reset parking brake to off and finally put vehicle in drive.

Twice in the last week my pacifica has stalled at a light. i waited at a red light and when the light turned green, i pressed the accelerator. the engine is on run but dash says shift to park after i press the accelerator. i shift to park then shift to drive and the car won't move. i have to turn the car off and then shift to drive and it will then go.

For the past year the car jerks forward and stalls while driving. especially after going from a stop. sometimes it is so bad, you violently jerk forward. have broughten to dealer twice for this. once they did a softward update, that did not help. second time they said it was normal

We purchased a pacifica on 12/21/2017. not even an hour after leaving the dealership the vehicle stalled, losing all power, and had to be restarted to regain power and driving ability at a stop light. we were not hit, but it is very dangerous to have a vehicle that stalls randomly.

I have two occasions where my vehicle stalled. 1. i was driving at 40 mph on the highway and everything went dead, i coasted to a stop on the side and was able to put it in park and restart. the second time i was stopped at a light on a side street, and started to go from a stop to a left turn and the vehicle start to go and suddenly went dead. i put it in park and restarted. no engine lights, nothing to tell me where the problem was. i am taking it in for service.

On 12/13/17, the car engine shut off and the car stalled while idle at an intersection. the lights were still on, but the car could not be shifted out of great and the breaks locked up. the car was essentially frozen. we called aaa and the mechanic was able to get the car to start. we took it to the dealership but they have not been able to locate the problem.

2017 pacifica continues after multiple attempts to repair to drop/slip out of gear while driving with no warning and then suddenly thrusts back into gear causing the entire car to jerk forward as though we have been hit from behind. these issues happen under 20mph and there is no way to control what is happening. our necks are forced forward and the sudden shock of the movement forward is not possible to stop. the problem began in december of 2017 and after 4-5 visits to the service i still have no resolution 2 years later.

Brand new car lost power while on freeway. when restarted would not allow me to move out of "park." turned engine off for five minutes and turned back on. was able to move into "drive". 2 days later car also lurched, lost power, jumped into "park"then stalled. was able to restart but car would not accelerate properly. took to dealer. have not heard back.

While coming to a stop at a redlight, going about 5 mph, engine suddenly died. was braking and vehicle was almost stopped. engine quit and message on panel said to put in park and restart. did so and no further incident. mileage - 14,000. weather - sunny, temp 55f. had 5 passengers in van.

Car shut off during driving and told me to shift into park and then restarted and took off fast for a few feet

The vehicle stalled while stopped at a traffic light at a busy intersection. the start button continued to display "run" and the vehicle was in drive. after shutting the vehicle off, it took multiple attempts at restarting the vehicle for it to resume operating.

I was driving on the highway with congested traffic at around 10mph. without any prior alert, the engine shut off by itself and the vehicle lost its power. i had to turn the transmission to p from d and restart the vehicle.

Car unexpectedly cut out and engine stalled whilst making a turn on to a busy 4 lane street. took to the dealership and no issues found. i've redently discovered this happening to other vehicles of the same make, model and and year.

Back in november 2017, my family and i were driving 70mph on the freeway and the car's dashboard light all turned on and started blinking. the car lost power forcing me to quickly pull over and avoided another car from colliding. the service lights turned on. i turned of the ignition and turned it back on. i took the car to the dealership the following day. they ran a diagnostic test but could not pull any codes of the incident. i saw the recall announced a couple of days ago. i contacted chrysler and was informed that the fix for this recall will not be available until 2nd quarter of 2018. i do not feel safe driving this car, especially with my kids on board. we purchased this car for its safety rating, now we are driving a death trap.

Car, with no warning, lost all acceleration while driving approximately 35 mph and flashed several warning lights on dashboard including electronic stability control, forward collision warning, service forward collision warning, and electronic park brake failure. in addition, the shifter knob light blinks and switches to 'p'. at that point, i can only drift the car to a stop. in my case i was able to turn the car off, then restart it and the issue did not occur again for another 4 days. after 4 days, the exact same thing happened, this time while i was stopped at a red light. took the car in for service and was told they performed a software update on the transmission and the car was fixed. i got about 1 mile from the dealer and the exact same thing happened while driving at approximately 30 miles per hour. drove car back to the dealer and they have the car now again trying to figure out what is wrong.

With only 7300 miles on the odometer, as of this writing 11-21-17, my pacifica has failed to start on 4 separate occassions. with each event, all the warning lights on the main and radio dash lit up and flashed on and off. also, the wiper blades came on and stayed on, not being able to shut off with the designated switch. as well, numerous "warning windows" popped up on the center dash info screen...service electronic stability, park brake unavailable, blind spot alert unavailable service required, service tire pressure system, park sense unavailable, service air bag system, warning bells constantly chiming, entire dash goes completely dark and radio turns off and on by itself. the last attempt to start, 11-20-17, after numerous times in an hours time, the engine did start only to shut down almost immediately. the vehicle has been towed to my local chrysler dealership twice now and is still there as of this writing. on the first event when towed in, i was told that a service writer also could not attempt to start the vehicle, but when the service tech tried, it did start. i was told to come pick up my vehicle that there were no error codes found and my vehicle was operating normally. i really dread the day when my pacifica dies while driving, as that apparantly has happened to many dozens of other 2017 pacificas already, placing the occupants in extreme danger. i just read an article in the new york times with regards to this dangerous issue and i near the point of demanding that chrysler buy back my vehicle. i do have multiple videos taken on my cell phone but do not have the ability to upload them just yet.

While driving with my family, including three small children, the vehicle shut itself off. no electrical, power steering, power brakes or engine. i was able to get it started again after coming to a stop. afterwards the screen said that the start/stop system was disabled.

My wife and i were returning from a trip to an appointment around 2:30 in the afternoon. we just exited off interstate 395 and were merging into traffic heading east on duke street. the light changed to yellow and required us to stop more aggressively than i typically would. we were traveling in a straight line and had to decelerate from 20 mph to complete stop within a matter of approximately 10 feet. once our van came to a complete stop the car shut off. i didn't notice any message on the screen, but when i released the brake pedal, the vehicle started again. afterwards, i thought back to the previous stop and thought i noticed some hesitation in acceleration, but didn't realize it until afterwards. the car was only purchased a month and a half ago and was purchased new. unfortunately i do not have any photo evidence of the circumstances and the vehicle did not present a check engine light. the dealer we purchased from stated they didn't know what we were talking about, but offered we make an appointment and they would check the vehicle.

Vehicle lost motive power while attempting to excelerate from a stop on a city street. vehicle was restarted but loud clunking noise and violent shaking came from engine compartment. vehicle was towed and has been at the local dealer since with little communication about a prognosis or permanent fix.

Vehicle shuts off at stop lights/signs.this has happened three times while stationary.had to place transmission in park and restart.

While stopped at a traffic light, the ess feature of the vehicle typically stops the engine to reduce co2 emissions and supposedly save on gas. as soon as i release the brakes, the engine re-starts and off i go. however, in this instance, after i let go of the brakes, the vehicle began rolling backwards, which caused me to step on the brakes right away or i would have hit the car behind me. i let go of the brakes again, then the engine restarted as usual. this is very concerning and a potential safety issue.

The engine shuts off while driving. display says engine start/stop unavailable. engine wont restart until start/stop system is available again. engine shuts off randomly, even at highway speeds. did it on the highway, going down city streets at 30mph, and even did it backing out of the driveway.

The first time i drove the vehicle it almost stalled making a left into oncoming traffic. the auto start stop was shut down by me at the next intersection. then the start stop light came on the warning system display. i have had problems with the auto start stop system from first day of ownership and has been to the dealer 4 times with about 350 miles on it. another time the vehicle had to be towed to the dealer as it would not start at all and the dash said service shifter. i have asked the dealer to replace the car and they said they will ask chrysler, as i bought it for my wife and she is afraid to drive it. it is the touring l model. i have had two different loaner pacificas without auto start stop, with no issues. i requested the regional representative call me about this safety issue on a survey form but no response.

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 chrysler pacifica. while accelerating from a stop, the vehicle abruptly jerked forward without warning. the contact also stated that the check engine indicator illuminated intermittently. the vehicle was taken to parkway chrysler dodge jeep ram (21560 hall road, clinton township, michigan 48038, (586)-800-3578) to be diagnosed, but no failure was found. the dealer reprogrammed the quick learn and the clear shift adapter. the contact was unsure if the parts that were reprogrammed were for the transmission or the engine; however, the repair did not correct the failure. the manufacturer was contacted. the approximate failure mileage was 5,000.

It started about a month or so after we bought the vehicle. when trying to accelerate after a complete stop the van feels like it's trying to stall then takes off so hard it feels like we've been rear-ended. we've taken the vehicle to the dealer many times & never got fixed. they kept pushing it off & even ignoring me. they finally gave me chrysler customer care #a month ago so i called & got a case. chrysler finally called me & said there is nothing they can do even though it's still under warranty. we looked up the lemon law & realized they ignored us because we were supposed to start a claim within 18 months of purchase which was last month.

Van was in drive, but stopped at an intersection on a city street waiting to turn left. when light changed i attempted to accelerate and engine did not engage. blue light on gear indicator started flashing. i was able to put car in park then shift into drive again, but there was lag when accelerating. i drove out of intersection and into parking lot. shut off car then restarted and drove it directly to dealer. still waiting for problem to be assessed. check engine light had come on one day prior to this incident. ..updated 11/08/17 *bf updated 11/13/2017*js

On 2 different occasions our chrysler pacifica has "stalled out" while we were driving. both instances occured while we were on a hill. the first was pulling up into a driveway after the vehicle was stopped and we tried to pull forward. the second happened when we were on the road at a stop sign facing uphill. as we started to try and drive forward from the stop sign, the engine shut off. in both instances, the car had to put in park and restarted. we have only had the vehicle a little over two monthsand there were less then 2,000 miles on the vehicle.

My wife was driving home from work and slowing down to approach a red light. as she was slowing, the vehicle experienced total systems failure. the touch screen display became scrambled, steering was unresponsive and the vehicle slowed to a stop. my wife was unable to accelerate, shift gears or turn the vehicle off. three police officers pushed the van into a nearby parking lot. during this time no one was able to turn the vehicle off or shift gears. finally, the car essentially rebooted itself and all systems seemed to return to normal. the car was towed to the dealership on 10-27-17, 12 days after purchase with approximately 400 miles. the car has been at the dealership for 6 days now and no problems have been found. they have not been able to recreate the problem and no error codes were found. this means the car has now been in the shop for 1/3 of the time that has passed since we first drove off the lot. this failure is disturbingly similar to numerous other complaints that have been filed. thank goodness my wife was slowing down when this happened or it could have caused a serious accident and even death. i refuse to allow my wife or children back in this vehicle with something so catastrophic happening after so few miles. i have opened a case with chrysler and waiting for them to get back to me. i hope a formal investigation is started soon and chrysler acknowledges the issue to protect the safety of everyone.

Minivan was at a stoplight and turned off without warnings. this just happened 30 mins ago. vehicle asked to be put in park and hit brake to start engine. engine started parked at nearest parking lot and called dealer. dealer 2 miles away no codes came up on scan that was done. ..updated 11/07/17 *bf updated 11/09/2017*js

While driving, the engine stops and the dashboard and shifter lights start blinking. the message "vehicle must be in park to shift gears" displays on the dashboard. this is incredibly dangerous and has happened 3 times now. our family was almost struck by oncoming traffic. updated 11/9/2017*js
