Problems with 2013 Kia Sorento ENGINE

On average, the 2013 Kia Sorento starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 74 561 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2013 Kia Sorento

Was driving car straight down city street when it suddenly lost power and engine shut off. was able to restart and it kept doing same thing and made a clicking noise from engine. took it to shop and battery and alternator fine, they are telling me that engine is seizing up.

My daughter was driving on the interstate going 65 mph when she heard a helicopter like noise and the motor shut off. she was in heavy traffic and just managed to cross 2 lanes of traffic and get off the road. car does not even crank over. mechanic says motor is seized up.

I was driving on the interstate and at 70 mph i had sudden power failure and the the engine completely died. after about 30 minutes it started up just long enough to go a half a mile and it did the same thing. 10 hrs later it started up again and we were able to have a diagnostic reading done which showed nothing. the battery and alternator were tested and are both working completely fine. later on it ran fine for about an hour and then suddenly did the same thing again.

While driving on the interstate with my family of four, the engine seized without warning. we were taking the off ramp from one interstate to merge onto another with no power. luckily we were in the lane closest to the shoulder and not already in the far left fast lane with little to no room to safely get out of traffic. mechanic noted that there was adequate clean oil. will cost $7,000 to replace engine. though kia has a recall for other engines, this one is not (yet) part of their recall.

The engine seized while i was driving on the interstate. the engine did have a minor oil leak since the time of purchase from the dealership, it was monitored and replinished reqularly and had been done the same day the engine seized.

I have taken my 2013 kia sorento to my local dealership after the latest engine recall. they upgraded software but gave no further explanation. everytime i get my oil change its almost empty. the past 2 oil changes there has been almost no oil. yesterday, i was driving, on the highway and check engine, oil, battery, light came on flashing and the car stalled in the middle lane of the highway. i was able to pull over and call a tow truck. i turned the vehicle off and 15 min later while waiting for tow truck i tried to turn it on and it came one. i canceled the tow and i am at the dealership today . my car is not leaking oil anywhere and i know there has been a engine recall on my make, model and year. i am afraid of the cost of the repair and the safety of a vehicle that stops in the middle of the highway.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sorento. while driving approximately 10-15 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact stated that the vehicle lost electrical power. the contact was unable to restart the vehicle. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and then to kearny mesa kia (7303 clairemont mesa blvd, san diego, ca 92111, (858) 365-8763) where it was diagnosed that the engine seized and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling). the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 58,000. *ln

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sorento. while driving, the vehicle stalled in the middle of the road. the contact received assistance with pushing the vehicle to the side of the road. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who stated that the engine seized and needed to be completely replaced. the contact called the manufacturer and received a case number. the contact scheduled to have the vehicle towed to carolina kia of high point (2445 n main st, high point, nc 27262, (866) 824-7081). the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 100,000.

I have taken my 2013 kia sorento to my local dealership after the latest engine recall. they replaced the dipstick,.no explanation why but the level lines are different. recently took it back to the dealership for a grinding, vibration noise in the front end, no issue reported. the past 2 oil changes which i do every 3k.miles there has been no oil. yesterday, i was driving, still had about 1k miles left before the 3k mile oil change and my oil light started flashing. immediately took it to my mechanic who again said there was no oil. my car is not leaking oil anywhere.

I already filed a claim the other day, but now my 2013 sorento has gotten even worse! my car stalled on the highway going around 65-70 mph, and power steering and acceleration completely ceased. after getting home and calling to report this, i took it for a test drive, and my engine has a very loud knocking sound coming from it, and it drives extremely rough. i never had any warning signs prior to this, and now my check engine light has been blinking. i have always kept up with the maintenance and oil changes on my vehicle, and now it is throwing a "p1326" code. it stalled twice prior to this while driving. i don't understand how my engine wasn't recalled prior to this when there was an engine recall on my exact year and model for rod bearing wear! this is my only form of transportation, and kia is aware of these problems but just keeps throwing bandaids on the actual problem! when is this going to end? engines are catching on fire, people (including myself) are stalling at high speeds on the road due to their faulty craftsmanship! i want answers!! how many people will have to die before they do something about this? i either want a recall on my engine, or i want a warranty to cover the problem they are already aware of! i refuse to put mine or my daughter's life in jeopardy because kia does not want to own up to their problem! there are thousands of complaints, when will this end?! i'm still paying on a car i can't even drive due to manufacturer error!! this is ridiculous! i will never own another kia due to their safety violations, and i can't wait until i can get rid of this car and not have to worry about our safety any longer. i want something done now! i will not stop until something is done about this.

I was driving my 2013 kia sorento yesterday on the highway going about 50-55 mph when all of a sudden it stalled and the engine stopped. i pulled over immediately and noticed it was extremely hot and out of oil. i still had 1,000 miles to go according to the oil change sticker from the mechanic. no oil warning light ever came on to indicate low fuel. there are also no signs of oil leaking in or around the vehicle. it was actually driving great the day before when i drove 50+ miles on mostly highway. i had my 2013 kia sorento towed to a local mechanic and just informed me the engine will need to be replaced. i did some research because i'm confused to what happened here and found that i'm not alone. many other kia & hyundai owners have experienced this same issue. "the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) reportedly states that more than 6 million hyundai and kia vehicles have been affected by the engine defect since 2015". what are my options? i am currently looking at an estimate of $6220.00 to install a new engine. i need help. what are my options?

Driving to work this morning and my 2013 kia sorento stalled. pulled to the side of the road and was able to restart the vehicle. engine began a clanking noise. had vehicle towed to my mechanic and they haven't reported back yet. recall notice was never sent to me. nhtsa recall number: 7v224 recall date: march 31, 2017 manufacturer recall number: sc147

Driving on the highway and then lost power and the engine light came on, exited the highway, went into a parking lot and then turned car off. started car again and drove several blocks and car starting knocking and then shut off. car would not start again.

Have not had any problems other then having to put 2 quarts of oil in the motor every other day and it stalling to the point of almost cutting off when i start to take off. i got up put oil in the car started my day as usual, ran errands and the parked the car as usual. went to get in it the next day and the engine light was on. started to drive it and it made the sound as if it was misfiring. later that day had my mechanic look at it and he said what i thought it was plugs. so i changed the plugs and coil packs and it did not change a thing. still had that noise and when you are going down the road it will start shaking and have to gear down. called kia customer service they said it was part of the 147 recall even though it showed that it had been fixed in 2018. i explained that it shook when driven that plugs and coil packs have been changed, had to fill up on oil instead of gas and that the oil had gas in it. told me it would cost me 230 out of pocket to have it towed. next day took it too kia dealership who said i would have to wait until the motor locked up before they could do anything. finally got them to look at it and they said the motor was bad. it was not safe to drive it anymore because it could caught fire or cause an accident. but yet not part of the recall said i would have to pay for all the repairs out of pocket. not only did kia customer service and nhtsa both said it was part of the 147 recall. i am with out a vehicle and still have to pay for one that i can't even drive or get fixed.

It started making a knocking and loud tapping noise when i was driving down a city streed. it kept getting louder and worse when i tried to accelerate.

The vehicle was traveling at about 45-50 mph on a major roadway when suddenly it made a noise and lost power. couldn't immediately pull off the road and was only able to travel at 15-20 mph, with emergency flashers on, until a safe pull off could be identified.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sorento. the contact stated that the rpms dropped all the way down and the traction indicator illuminated and remained lit. the vehicle shook while traveling and also quickly surged forward and then slowed down. the vehicle also shut off while driving around a corner. spradley kia (2145 hwy 50 west, pueblo, co 81008, (719) 543-6710) performed a diagnostic test, but no codes were found. an appointment was scheduled for a more extensive diagnostic test for next week. the contact called the manufacturer and was given a case number. the contact researched the failure online and discovered many similar failures. the failure mileage was 103,000.

Tl* the consumer owns a 2013 kia sorento. while the consumer stated that their spouse was driving 45 mph, the consumer heard an abnormal noise. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. when approaching a stop, the vehicle stalled and the ignition turned off. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was towed to rick case kia (located at 3190 satellite blvd, duluth, ga 30096, (678) 321-1590) where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the consumer associated the failure with nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 94,994. *ln *as *js

The vehicle has high oil consumption, roughly one quart of oil per one thousand miles driven. quick searches online have revealed this is a common problem.

Bearing wore out and caused my block to break

The engine of my 2013 kia sorento, with less than 58k miles, seized and shut off completely, causing the steering wheel to lock when i was driving on a busy suburban street. thankfully, i was able to coast to the side of the road, where i was able to restart the engine and drive home, noting a knocking noise in the engine the whole way. the car remained in our garage for the next couple weeks while we were on vacation. once home, i drove the car (knocking all the way) to firestone where they diagnosed the issue as a probable bottom end engine connecting rod failure, noting they had seen at least five or more kia sorentos with the same problem, then proceeded to pull up the nhtsa recall for 2011-2013 sorentos with engine failure relating to bottom end connecting rods. the car had barely made it to firestone (where the engine died completely) and had to be towed to the jim sipala kia dealership in west chester, pa, where the car had been purchased, used, in 2014, with about 16,000 miles. sipala kia diagnosed what firestone had suspected but refused to do anything b/c the vin # of my car did not match those in the recall, even though it was the exact same issue, which they did not deny. the issue my car has falls under the nhtsa safety recall #17v224000, recall date 3/31/17, wherein the consequence of this issue is noted as 'bearing wear may result in the engine seizing, increasing the risk of a crash.', which is exactly what happened to me.

Around 60,000 miles, my kia sorento is losing oil without any signs of leak or burning. just disappearing. have completed 3 total 1,000 mile oil consumption tests at kia of west chester, pa and i have asked them to start a claim. it is losing at least a full quart after 1,000 miles. i continue to check oil, purchase quarts and am anxious with concern over the legal issues driving a vehicle with engine recalls and the chance of losing a life due to engine and connecting rod malfunction. 2nd owner and purchased feb. 2017 from ardmore nissan (ardmore, pa).

The engine stalled while driving on the freeway. check engine light came on after the car lost power. we had to pull onto the shoulder of the road and the car was towed to the dealership. no warning lights of any kind came on prior to the engine stalling. kia claims the oil was low but no check oil light ever came on. the scheduled maintenance plan was followed precisely and is up to date. kia has a faulty engine oil pressure warning light, causing engines to stall while driving.

Rear main oil seals leaking causing engine problems

My name is [xxx] . my daughter had a 2013 sorrento... took great care and did the scheduled oil changes ... now i have the vehicle because she died 2017. did not drive it much.. it has around 40000 miles . 2018 the engine froze up. i could start it. i had it towed to the canton michigan kia dealership ... i was told they would put a new engine in because it's their fault. just need to have the proper procedures to get an approval from kia... after weeks they came back and said no unless i can prove every 6 months she and myself had scheduled oil changes. i'm 90 years old and trying to call the different kia dealerships to get records. and i had other people do oil changes. i would not buy an sorrento. i put to batteries in it thinking my problem with the car was that. now the car is sitting in the dealership. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

2013 kia sorento, knocking in engine. kia says it needs a new engine. they did last 3 oil changes with no issues reported. they put a claim in for warranty and warranty company is being difficult with approval. car has had no issues, bought new with 100 miles. was in motion on highway. apparently no recall on my vehicle. if engine had blown on highway it could have caused a crash with injury and or death.

2013 kia sorento ,,, 120,000 miles one owner, regular maintance on time. engine failed on hyway , my mechanic said its a recslled engine. towed to kia , after two months of back and fourth phine calls, kia said its not a recallled engine. the probkem is kia sent nobody to inspect engine , and they run you around on phone. not happy.

I have a 2013 kia sorento. while driving down a city road the car only moving 45 mph every light on the dash started to blink, steering wheel began to become difficult to turn and car eventually stalled on side of road. car had to be towed to home and then towed to kia dealer of stonecrest in lithonia,ga. the car was given a diagnostic that for it to run the alternator needed to be replaced. alternator was replaced at a cost of 1,056.00. drove vehicle home and drove onto highway later that evening where i heard knocking noises, sensor lights flashed. the car began to smoke and steering wheel locked. i was alone on busy highway at night in between exits and my husband and the tow truck struggled with pinpointing my location. this was very scary with cars driving at 70+ mph past me and my hazard lights were losing power.had to have car towed once again. kia now says the engine needs replaced and asking for 6,000. kia has history of engine recalls but claim my vin is not included in recall so they will not replace. vehicle only has 100,000 miles and has had consistent oil changes. now i'm stuck with a pricey repair on a vehicle that is not paid off. this situation is dangerous and appears to be a common trend with kia vehicles.

I have a sorento that does not even have 60k miles on it. the car is a 2013, i bought the car less than 1 yr ago and after having it for 7 months, i being told by the mechanics at the facility that the car needs a new engine. the car broke down in the middle of the highway while i was on my way to work.

On july 12 i was driving down a very busy interstate in another state when my engine started knocking once i got off exit. the car was shaking very badly. it made me very afraid that i was gonna cause an accident. once i got off exit i attempted to pull over to a parking lot but the car completely cut off in the middle of traffic and would not crank. car was towed to shop and was told that engine had seized. i have done every recall sent to me and have kept this car well maintained since it is my only means of transportation. i have read numerous complaints dealing with the same thing. my vehicle only had 163,000 miles on it. i think this needs to be investigated.

I was driving home and stopped at a red light when the car completely died. i had aaa come out and they said the battery was like new and the oil was good, so they towed it to a dealer who told me the engine seized. they could not find a reason why the 6 year old cars engine just randomly seized. i found out they're recalled for that. however kia is saying my particular car is not covered and wants to charge me $6,800.00 to put a used engine in. i still have over a year of car payments and no car. i use my car everyday for my job.

Driving highway engine make loud knocking sound and car stop running. after cool down, i was able to start but making loud knocking sound.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sorento. while driving on the highway, the engine overheated. the contact pulled over and called an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the engine seized. the contact stated that the vehicle was well maintained with regular oil changes. the vehicle was towed to herb chambers kia of burlington (93 cambridge st rte. 3a, burlington, ma 01803, (781) 202-3456) and they stated that there were no recalls. the contact stated that the dealer rudely referred her to the manufacturer. the dealer stated that they would charge the contact for the initial diagnostic testing. the manufacturer advised the contact to go back to the dealer and was informed that they would not charge for the diagnostic test or repairs. the contact stated that they would call back. the failure mileage was 97,000. *bf *tr

I was driving home from work on a county highway when all of sudden the engine started making a loud knocking noise and was losing power. i was thankfully able to pull over to a gas station where the car stalled out. my husband met me and we had the car towed to a mechanic who has told us that the engine needs to be replaced. i have called kia and got the "run around" saying that it's out of warranty and nothing can be done. research online has shown that this has been a known issue with this particular engine for years. luckily i was able to pull over safely but if this had happened on the interstate traveling 70mph who knows what could have happened.

Driving down the road and all of a sudden our kia started making a knocking sound in the engine. we slowed down and started to pull over when we hear pieces of our car breaking off and saw a huge cloud of white smoke. when we pulled over and got out of the car, the whole underneath of the engine was on fire. the engine was seizing and caused the bearing to punch a hole into the engine. the parts we hear flying off were actually pieces of the engine exterior, which caused sparks and ignited the fire when the engine oil started pouring out. this happened without warning and we have kept up on maintenance. less than 100k miles. vin is not part of engine recall, however it is clear upon little research that kia knows about this problem, they don't care, and they are doing little to fix it. it's obviously a huge safety issue, these are people's lives we're putting at stake and these cars need off the road. they are not safe. please help the public do something about this.

Excessive oil consumption. the engine uses 1 quart of oil every 500 miles. unable to maintain full oil, engine makes knocking noises when not at full level. vehicle contains the theta engine included in previous recalls but has not failed yet. dealer resistant to replace engine due to mileage over 100,000, out of warranty.

My 2013 kia sorento with only 108,000 miles and excellent maintenance records suddenly blew a rod from the engine block. this is extremely dangerous and scary and never have i had to replace an engine in a car with such low miles. i would please like you to investigate my specific engine failure to see if it aligns with the multitude of other recalls that the 2013 kia sorento has issued. my car just stalled at a red light... 3 ignition lights came on... oil pressure, battery and check engine. i turned the car over and it started. it was making a horrible sound so i pulled immediately over. the engine had already failed. i cannot understand this at all as i am religious with oil changes and maintenance. please investigate further.

Vehicle stops / cuts off while driving. very dangerous. have nearly been ran over by other vehicles on highway. also sometimes while at a red light or idling while in park the car while just cut off.

My sorento was making a noise in aug 2018. i took my sorento to kia. kia stated the noise was a low engine bearing noise on start and recommended engine replacement at my cost. the car at this time had 117,090 miles, which just put it out of warranty. fast forward to june 2019. we were driving my sorento on a highway going a speed of 55-60 mph, when my engine stopped running and 3 children and myself barely made it off the road (this could have been much worse if i was pulling out into fast moving traffic). the car sat for 30 mins and restarted, but made a funny noise. it took us 2 hours to get tow truck to come on the side of the busy highway to get our car and us moved to safety. they finally arrived and the car was towed on a wed night to the same kia that worked on it in 2017 and a note was left with my keys about what happened including the noise. the next morning (thurs) i called and spoke to the service manager at kia and repeated the noise and issues that brought my car into them. he called me back stated he let the car run for 1.5 hours, checked the electrical system, and all the fluids. the car didn't sputter or stall out. on fri they ran diagnostics on the car. then they test drove the vehicle to see if they could replicate the noise. the car did not make it far from kia before the connecting rod blew 2 holes through the engine and landed on the radiator. all fluids were lost per service manager at kia. he stated that they did not hear the knocking of the rod prior to hit happening when the technician took it on a test drive. no paperwork has been shared regarding the current state of my car.

Daughter was driving car on city street, and engine stalled coasted to s stop. recall for faulty machining on 2.4 l 4cyl kia motors. recall # sc147. kia states that this vin does not fall under the recall, but same issue as other 2013 kia's. internet stated that all 2.4 l 4cyl engines were covered by the recall for engine seizing up from bad machining.

Initial issue-vehicle was driving perfectly and we had just gotten back from the store. no indication of issues. we were going to go somewhere and noticed key fob not working. we unlock the door manually and when we went to start it horn started going off and car would not start. we read into issues and we decided to take battery in to get checked and it was full charged. we cleaned battery cables and got car started but this time radio not working and key fob not working. car driving good for about 2 days and coming home last night, while on highway, all lights turned on -on dashboard, vehicle lost power, it sputtered all the way home. windshield wipers weak and it was raining. power windows barely works and could not push on gas! we barely made it back home and parked vehicle but gear shift would only go up to neutral gear. won't let us put into park and car is dead. vehicle is just sitting there now

While driving on the interstate we accelerated to approximately 65 mph after entering the interstate on an on-ramp. within about 1 mile, the vehicle stalled with no warning/ticking/knocking, and gauge/warning lights came on. we coasted to an exit ramp and after coming to a stop realized the engine was stopped at 0 rpm. i tried to start the vehicle multiple times in order to move out of the way of traffic coming from behind, for safety reasons, but the engine was seized and would not turn over. the attempts to start the vehicle additionally cause the starter to fail. during the attempts to start the vehicle, smoke came fromt he engine area as well as the smell of burning metal. i am unsure if the smoke came from the engine or starter. after this two other drivers stopped, i was able to shift the vehicle into neutral, and we pushed the vehicle to a safer location. we are working with kia to replace the engine. kia is stating the repair is not covered by their recall sc147 and that recall inspection was already completed on our vehicle, even though the failure is symptomatic of the recall defect/issue. kia has stated that the engine will be replaced under warranty as part of a product improvement campaign but i am waiting for more clarification from kia. as part of the sc147 recall and related kia notices to kia dealers, kia dealers are to provide a loaner or alternate means of transportation (rental car to customers). it has been 2.5 weeks since the incident and kia has failed to provide a loaner or rental vehicle.

I've had my oil changes on time. theyre free at my dealership so im there like clockwork. i drove to work just fine but when it was time to go home i noticed my engine was making a ticking noise. i turned the car off and back on to make sure and it was ticking. now my check engine light comes on. as im driving out the parking garage i noticed a load knocking sound. i checked my car and it read a p0014 code which is an advanced camshaft. after dropping it off at the dealer they told me i may need a new engine. i spoke to someone at kia who said that there was a recall on 2013 kia sorrentos but mine wasnt under the recall because it was made at a different location. although my car had similar issues kia would not help! since i just bought the car and im not the primary owner im stuck with either a high repair bill or carrying over a bunch of negative equity into a new car deal. kia is known for their faulty engines and i just wish i knew this before buying one!

While driving in the expressway, the car stopped abruptly. every light that can possibly come on was on. i was able to slowly pull over out of heavy traffic with the hazards on. i had it towed to a repair shop where they diagnosed it as being a ceased engine. i immediately called kia. initially, they agreed to repair it. two days later, they called and said it didn't call under the perimeters of the recall. today, the car still remains at kia service waiting on them to change their minds and repair it.

I was driving down rt 121 at about 45/50 miles per hour, on a straight section of road, when the automobile just died. i managed to coast into a safe area. the power steering and brakes were not working. attempted to get a battery boost and the tow truck operator said it sounded like it was turning over dry but would not start. then the car was towed to mechanic falls garage.

Takata recall. i was driving in the freeway when it started to make a noise immediately i pulled out to park but it got stuck .and power off. i tried to turned on but didn't work. i had to called.the tow to bring it at home

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sorento. while driving 60 mph, the vehicle began to stall and multiple warning indicators illuminated. the contact was able to park the vehicle on the side of the road. the vehicle was able to be restarted within fifteen minutes; however, it continued to stall while driving home. the vehicle was unable to be driven. the contact associated the failure with nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling). the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, but was not diagnosed or repaired. the vehicle was towed to kia of manhattan (located at 8223 s port dr, manhattan, ks 66502, (785) 236-7002) where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 72,000.

Per the mechanic, metal chips in the oil, radiator over heated and cracked the engine this sounds exactly what was recalled for the 2.5 engine. .while driving car started overheating

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sorento. while driving various speeds, the vehicle stalled, there was an oil leak, and a loud abnormal noise was heard. all the warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the engine needed to be repaired. the vehicle had not been repaired. the dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 60,000.

This car has at least 8 recalls on it now, not including past recalls. this vehicle has stopped on me without any warnings in the middle of the street while traveling with my family. the reason ot stopped was due to a malfuctioned engine that was on recall. my turning signals lights go out without warning , this has happened while on the highway. this is also due to light wiring thats on recall. kia had me take my car to a dealership to get the malfunctioning engine fixed. the car is still doing the same thing and has list it speed while i was on the highway. i feel like it will cut off on me at any giving time. i just got another recall leter that states that there is an issue with the replacement part they put on my engine. i am a working mom with kids and depend onmy transportation to live. i am scared thattbis vehicle will stop on me and my kids on the highway or street.
