On average, the 2013 Kia Sorento starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 74 561 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2013 Kia Sorento

My car is using oil took it to kia dealer and they said it had 5 recalls on it after they had the said to drive it for 500 miles if it still uses oil call them back i did and they said their was nothing they could do for me i even bought extra imani tan even insurance that they say will not cover the motor they want me pay 1000 dollars for them to tear it down to see if it is my fault or their and up back together with the same use parts i did not get any notices for any of they recalls they fixed

I have a 2013 kia sorento with 103000 miles and i'm the 2nd owner, i think, and have had it for 7 months. changed the oil regularly and no engine or warning lights were on. i was driving on the highway at 75 mph and the engine stalled. i was able to pull over safely. started the sorento again and the engine was making a loud noise. had to have it towed 40 miles to mechanic who said the rod bearing was the blame and the debris from that caused extensive damage to the vehicle. contacted kia 3 times and spoke to supervisors, but they said my engine / vin # was not covered under the recall and that it was up to me to get fixed. $7000.00 !!

Kia replaced my engine twice, due to oil consumption. a month after the first engine replacement, i had the same problems.. smoke coming out of exhaust, loss of power, stalling and oil consumption. i was in and out of kia's service department. they told me nothing was wrong! i moved from co to ne, my husband and i had to add oil every 100 miles, with smoke coming out of exhaust and stalling. lincoln ne kia found an oil leak at the exhaust manifold right away! kia instructs then to replace my engine again! once they replaced engine, they still saw the leak at the exhaust manifold with resulted in more guessing and parts. the day after i picked it up, my husband and i went out to dinner and my sorento died in the middle of the road. right away called and got it back in. at first they could not duplicate, however after taking it 50 miles, it died 3 times. they still can't find anything, but feel it may be the throttle body. they put a used one on and have me drive it a few weeks, it didn't die during that time, so they ordered a new one and installed. a month later i drive to co, i break down, it's towed back and kia can't find anything. i drive it and it dies 1/2 dozen more times, each time i take it right in, but the code has cleared and they can't find anything! finally, it does and the light stays on, it shows it's the map sensor. kia has a specialist come out to install that and inspect my car. they say it's fixed and safe. i drive to co on 9/22/17, 2 months later and my engine catches on fire. i loss my brakes, can't put it in park and emergency brake won't work. flames are everywhere, smoke filling my car. i jump out of my burning, moving car and seconds later the whole thing engulfs in flames! most horrific, awful thing ever! i was lucky enough to have minor injuries. my mental and emotional state are a mess! kia won't do anything!

My engine seized while driving down the interstate @ 77 mph. kia consumer tells me my engine isn't the engine on the recall list. the gdi engine is and mine is 2.4 l4 dohc. how come kia has a recall on 2013 kia sorento but discriminates engines. one of the scariest situations i have ever been in! and now kia says too bad!!! now i am without transportation and relying on friends for rides until kia consumer can get answers. no loaner from my local dealership or rental. and may i add this happened 691.5 miles from home.

Engine: kia made a recalls of 2013 sorento engines but my engine was not included, the problem is that the metal inside my engine broke and shattered all over the place; when i took it to kia, i was told that i need a new engine due to it has the same problem as the ones that were recalled but my engine was not included in that recalled. i have write to kia motors usa, to my dealer city kia of orlando and i have been completely ignored.

Around 4:30am (still dark outside) i was on my way to work, my engine was making knocking sounds and i started to get off on an exit, all of the sudden it seemed as if every light on the dashboard came on, the oil change light and some signs i've never seen before lighted up, the car went dead and came back on instantly, the steering wheel locked and i could no longer accelerate almost causing a major car accident. i turned my hazards on and remained in the middle of an exit until help arrived and was able to put my car in neutral and push my vehicle bumper to bumper to the side of the road.

I experience a loud knocking in my engine, upon bringing to the dealership for further inspection, the engine is believed that the rod bearings failed and the engine has metal debri insode of engine. causing the engine to be completely unusable and possibly other engine damage because of this. not to mention the sensors on the car never came on to warn me of any possible problems that might be happening. the car is still being owed on and in undrivable condition. it has been since parked, except when towed ( full bed tow) to the dealership for inspection and than towed back to my residence. the estimated cost kia offered was over $9,000 for parts and labor with only a 12,000 mile/ 1 year warranty when the original engine warranty is 100.000 mi warranty. the maintence has been kept up on during the life of the vwhicle and no known negligence was done to cause this problem. the problem was identified when my husband was driving and the car stalled out 3 times while picking up our kids from school. when he arrived home it had lound knocking noises coming from engine , so we arranged for the dealer to inspect the issue. they informed me it was over their warranty because of the mileage and wouldnt cover the damage. i have since found out other owners with similar problems as my kia happening to them as well as the lawsuit that kia /hyundai paid out for repairs in the case greg wallis vs. kia motors case #8:16-cv-01033 (us district court for the central district of california. with them agreeing to pay all repairs.

My engine has no leaks of oil yet ran out of all but 1 qt, and caused my to get spun bearings, and now engine is ruined. this is less than a 4 year old car and no indicator lights ever came on saying i was low on anything. also just had major fluids all changed in car less than 6 months ago. it is over the 100,000 warranty so now i have to get a new engine. looking to see if this is an issue with any other owners. the engine is the v6 engine, the smaller engine was recalled for similar issues, yet mine wasnt in the recall.

We were driving our 2013 kia sorento on the turner turnpike in oklahoma going straight at approximately 75mph on july 22, 2017 and the car engine went out. we had it towed to kia and they said the long block went out and the engine seized up and we need to replace with a new engine. the car has approximately 90k miles on it.

At 130,288 miles 08/31/16 vehicle was sputtering and lagging while driving but no check engine light on. kia dealership replaced camshaft assembly and charged me $2390. on 06/26/17 at 155,278 miles similar problems with vehicle spitting and sputtering but no engine light on. dealership could not duplicate the problems on a test drive. on 07/18/17 at 155,872 miles engine light came on. vehicle spitting and sputtering again. metal found in oil and in filter. dealer suggested replacing engine due to bearing wear causing cvvt and ocv sticking. recall was done on other sorento's, but my sx v6 has had the same engine failure and the dealer told me there was no recall on my sorento. my kia has sat undriveable for almost a year. i had my vehicle oil changed at the dealership without fail and only drove highway miles to and from work. i have each of these service department invoices from dean mccrary kia in hattiesburg ms.

Car has 45k miles. total loss due to engine fire. oil pan failure. cause and origin report pending

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sorento. while driving 55 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. kia of slidell, louisiana was made aware of the failure and replaced the motor in the engine, but the failure recurred. the contact was informed by the dealer that the vin was not included in a recall. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue. the failure mileage was 35,000.

Engine lockd up making a clicking sound when started. it locked up steering and gear shift a couple times before it started the noise. was told by dealership not covered by recall because manufactured in different plant than other sorentos with exact same problem.

On july 11th 2017, my husband was driving home from work in his 2013 kia sorento on interstate 35 going 65 mph when he heard a loud noise coming from under the hood. he continued to drive to get to the rest stop which he did not make it the engine just died , no warning lights or anything, so he had to pulled off to the side of the road and called for a tow truck, the kia was towed to the nearest mechanic which upon examination of the car determined that the engine seized up and would need to be replaced, they could replace it for $5000-6000 since they are a gm dealer we decided to have it towed to a kia dealer who came to the same conclusion and would charge us $5875 for a used engine with 120,000 miles on it which is more than our car has on it or $7100 for a new engine. we have a 2.4 liter mpi which is not part of the recall but should be, there is no reason a 4 year old car with routine oil changes should blow and engine!

The engine caught on fire while traveling down the interstate

My husband and i were driving north on i-49 in louisiana when our 2013 kia sorento (approximately 86,000 miles) began making a clicking/knocking noise upon acceleration, the check engine light began blinking, and the engine immediately shut down. we pulled over to the shoulder, turned the vehicle off, and attempted to restart the vehicle; however, the engine failed to restart. we turned our emergency lights on for cautionary purposes, but after approximately 30 minutes, the lights completely stopped working. there was evidence of oil leakage underneath the vehicle, as well as oil splatter underneath the hood of the vehicle near the engine and over the entire exterior of the vehicle, from the front hood to the back window. we had the vehicle towed to the nearest kia dealership and were told by the service department that the bearings in the engine had failed, which resulted in "catastrophic engine failure," and that engine will need to be replaced. we were also informed that the engine in our vehicle is a 2.4-l mpi engine, which is not part of the current recall; however, individuals at the dealership and with kia customer service confirmed that the problems we experienced are the exact same problems that have been reported with the 2.4-l gdi engines that are part of this recall. we have been extremely diligent with oil changes, and had approximately 2000 miles until our next oil change, which we can support with documentation. kia has denied our request for assistance because our vehicle is no longer under warranty.

This a correction to post on july 9, 2017. our 2013 sorento has the theta ii mpi (multi-point injection) and not theta ii gdi (gasoline direct injection). now i know why i haven't seen a recall letter. i still have a blown engine.

Our kia sorento had 46963 miles. we are the second owners and have put 34k miles on it and have had the oil changed at approximately every 5k miles. the kia sorento stopped running while it was being driven at 55 mph on a two-lane road. i was being followed by a dually pick up towing a large boat. the car lost power and the "check engine" light came on. i had just enough time to turn on my emergency flashers and find a safe place to pull off the road. we had it towed to a repair shop in kingsland, tx, they cut the serpentine belt, couldn't get the engine to turn, told us that the oil pump had failed and the engine seized. we then had it towed to the dealer in austin, where they had a technician look at it and confirmed that the engine was blown. they said that the only way to know if there were metal shavings would be to pull the oil pan ($195) and that would only confirm that shavings were in the oil. to actually know what had caused engine failure they would have to pull the main and rod bearings ($400). they said that even if we did find that the engine failure was due to metal shavings that it would not be considered as part of recall sc147 because it wasn't manufactured at a "certain plant" in a "certain month". he was unable to tell me what plant and month. we have now found, through decoding our vin, that this car was built in georgia and has the theta ii engine. they did offer to put in an engine from a wrecked kia with 100k miles on it at a cost of $6700-$6800. the kbb value is $9800. we were told that the basic warranty had ended on april 24, 2017 and that the 5yr/60k warranty was not transferable to the second owner. we then found this: https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2013/kia/sorento/suv/fwd#manufacturercommunications showing that they had modified the warranty. no one at the kia customer service center or at the dealership told us this.

When beginning a right-hand turn after stopping for red light, the engine quit and it took two attempts to restart it. the car was fully warmed-up and had 3/4 tank of gas,the weather was about 82 degrees and humid..

Military stationed overseas with an upcoming move to the usa (moved august 2017).engine light illuminated on june 25 2017. engine knock started on june 26. towed to dealership in england on july 11. car was ruled inoperable with engine failure on july 12. we were forced to leave our car in england due to parts availability and lack of assistance from kia. we still have not heard about parts availability nor are we in possession of our car. nearing 3 months without our vehicle has put us in financial distress.

Kia sorento 2013 88k miles, going down highway, loss of power, light clunking noise. coasted to stop. towed to a shop. they said timing chain not lubricated, broke and destroyed cylinder head. can't get replacement motor because of a freeze on selling these motors. *tr

I received notice of nhtsa recall 17v-224, kia engine safety recall campaign sc147 in the end of may 2017. the vehicle was diagnosed as needing the recall work on approximately june 10, 2017. it is now august 11, 2017 and the recall has not been completed and the vehicle has sat as undriveable for 2 months. this is an unacceptable amount of time to complete the safety recall.

The nhtsa.dot.gov site says there are zero recalls for my car. this is not true. my car had an engine recall in june of 2017 which has not been satisfied. they now say there is nothing wrong with my engine.

The vehicle has 38000 miles on it and already needs a new engine. kia will not replace.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sorento. while driving unknown speeds, the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a local dealer (sunset kia of venice, 1179 us highway 41 byp s, venice, fl 34285) where it was diagnosed that the throttle body needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. the check engine indicator illuminated again. the vehicle was towed to the same dealer where it was diagnosed that the throttle body part was installed incorrectly. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the check engine indicator illuminated again. the vehicle was taken to kia of venice (1179 us highway 41 byp s, venice, fl 34285) where it was diagnosed that the power control module needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, the failure recurred, and the check engine indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken back to sunset kia of venice where it was diagnosed that the o2 sensor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred and the check engine indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to sunset kia of venice where it was diagnosed that the throttle body needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, the failure recurred, and the check engine indicator flashed. the vehicle was taken to sunset kia of venice where it was diagnosed that there were metal shavings in the engine and the engine needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified and opened case number: 13658651. the failure mileage was 48,899.

Engine is loud i was told to report to the kia dealer if the engine was getting more loud. the vehicle was loud from the time i purchased it and was told to bring it in if it seemed to get more loud. i was also told that it has solid lifters and that is why it is loud. now it has 99730 miles and some engines are seizing up. i asked if the recall would be in force if i went over 100000 and was told to park it until i received a letter from kia for instructions. now i have a car that i can't drive and paying payment's on, i'm the original owner. the kia rep said to hurry when i receive the letter so the dealership could get me scheduled but he said he did not know if it would be covered because of the mileage! he also said if i took it in now that i would have to pay for an inspection. basically now i'm the proud owner of a kia boat anchor!

Kia recall: while driving at 60 mph on a two lane highway, the engine seized up on my 2013 kia sorento with 78000 miles on it. the company that rebuilt the engine said it was due to a loss of oil pressure. however the oil was full and clean and was 1000 miles below its next scheduled oil change. the engine did not make any noises prior to the failure. kia states that the vin # on my sorento is not part of the recent recall on their engines that are failing in this same manner. i had the engine rebuilt (at a very hefty price) and am looking for reimbursement.

My 2013 kia sorento with a theta 2.4 liter engine experienced complete engine failure at 63,000 miles; on tuesday 3/21/17. when my engine failed/heard loud engine noises i was driving on highway i-10 north in tucson az rush hour traffic, i had to coast over immediately to the side of the highway, very dangerous lucky no accident. i uncovered important information about kia theta 2.4 liter engine problems. spoke to kia certified master technician; morgan that took apart my engine for warranty evaluation. he said they have been seeing this engine problem; it's failure of the #3 cylinder connecting rod, feels it's an engineering mistake, the port sizes for the oil flow are not sized properly, causing insufficient oil flow overtime and complete engine failure. my engine looked brand new, there was no sludge build up, and the oil pump looked brand new as well. i have attached pictures for proof. there were very small bronze colored metal flakes in the oil pan; he said it was like panning for gold in the oil pan. the metal flake erosion didn't happen overnight this was slowly happening with every mile being driven; the metal from the connecting rod bearings eroded overtime in small metal flakes and collected in the oil pan. i had peoria kia in peoria, az do my last warranty inspection & maintenance service/oil change on my 2013 kia sorento in december 2016. i especially asked the service advisor to check out everything including the engine before the 60,000 mile second owner powertrain warranty was about to expired. kia knew about the numerous past warranty claims on this 2.4 liter engine, a quick oil analysis would have shown metal debris particulates in the oil, indicating a serious engine problem developing. the metal shavings collecting in the oil pan that should have been detected beforehand.

My 2013 kia sorento should become a part of the recall that is currently involving kia motors. we changed our oil and noticed it to be what my husband called a bit lumpy. took our car into the local garage and they told us there was a leak on the top of the motor. we planned on fixing this the following payday, but instead left the dealership to a high pitched squeal and that was it the car never moved again. the rods were shot and caused motor to seize. our local garage, bending wrenches believes there is evidence to support our claim. we have paid for a new engine to be placed in vehicle and are hoping to become a part of this recall and be reimbursed for this manufacturer defect. we have all paperwork from garage and also kept the oil that had been changed from the kia showing that there is probably little fleks of the metal from the rods in this oil which caused it to become lumpy. not sure where else to turn for help with this claim.

My car has worked fine up until the very moment this occurred. i was driving on the highway at 60 mph when it started making clicking noises. it became very hard and heavy to drive. not more than 15 miles later i was able to exit and the moment i turned right the engine began to shake, the power steering no longer worked, and the car shut off. thank goodness i was able to glide into a parking lot or a major accident and injuries could have occurred. there are metal shavings in my oil and the bearing completely fell out of my car. i went back to pick up all the pieces (see picture attached) no engine light has ever come on. i have never missed an oil change. this car is only 6 years old with 67,000 miles on it. kia is claiming my car is not one that is in the engine recall.

My sorento overheated and i stopped the sorento right away . i towed it to my kia dealer and they told me i needed a new engine because the head gaskets were blown. i don't understand how my 2013 sorento that i purchased new already needed a new engine. i had taken it to two kia dealers and they were rude about the entire situation and blamed me for the damage of the vehicle. this happened march of 2017 and i am now reading the recalls for the sorento and there are recalls for the engine seizing but i don't understand why my sorento isn't one of the cars being recalled if my car just seized up out of nowhere and a month prio to the incident i had an oil change and everything was fine .

My car is 2013 kia sorento. i bought this car jan, 2014. my family experienced engine stall 4 times so far. last one was yesterday. my wife drove at down hill and stop to make right turn. that moment, engine stopped. she said break work properly. so, engine seems stop after car fully stopped. but my wife didn't recognized stopped engine. when she released breaks. car went down to main road. she pushed accel but car didn't go ahead. if there were any car coming. she couldn't avoid horrible accident. than, she put on parking and start engine again. i have received 1 time engine module recall service. after that, engine stalled 2 times. this is over 30k car. but never reliable.

The car was being driven and caught fire on rural roads about 50mph.the dog and my significant other were able to get out of the vehicle and my s.o.'s quick thinking...snow in the engine helped extinguish the flames. a game warden arrived and the car was towed to a kia dealership who replaced the entire engine free of cost.

While traveling at 75 mph on the freeway. the compression went to zero and the vehicle stalled in a dangerous location next to a guardrail. the engine oil flowed out of the engine and there was dark smoke billowing out of the exhaust. the kia was towed home at my expense. the vehicle had service through its' entire warranty period with kia dealership. they made major repairs as well as oil changes for compliance with warranty. the vehicle is out of warranty by 20k. kia will not cover the engine replacement which is needed. this is the same pattern of mechanical failure regarding engine oil problems leading to catastrophic engine failure and costly repairs.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sorento. when the vehicle was started, black smoke appeared under the hood and the muffler that emitted through the vents inside the vehicle. the contact turned the engine off and called an unknown local kia dealer located in salem, or where it was diagnosed that the engine failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired due to the repair fees. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that she did not change the oil when needed; therefore, they would not make any repairs. the approximate failure mileage was 70,000. the vin was not available.

Bought the vehicle new, have had no issues until about a month ago. it started burning oil at an excessive rate. took it to dealer and were told that we had not maintained properly and that repair/replacement of engine would not be under warranty. car has 71000 miles, owners manual says to change oil every 7500 miles or 12 months, we have records for 8 oil changes, kia says we need to show 14, that would be an oil change every 5000 miles which is not what manual says. we have been told that there was a recall for the same engine in another kia vehicle, but not for this one. many complaints for oil related issues on this car for 2011-2014. we have also contacted the kia consumer affairs center. we are still driving vehicle, but check oil before we go anywhere. dealer wants us to pay $350-$400 to completely tear down engine to take pictures to see if kia will cover under warranty. *tr

2013 kia sorento. consumer writes in regards to engine safety recall issued. *ld the consumer stated knocking noise could be heard from the engine. the dealer could not duplicate the failure. the consumer stated the dealer refused to repair the engine under the recall. updated 11/07/2017*js

The engine seized and is not working. my car was smoking black and white every time we turn on the car. kia in salem oregon revised the car and said that "everything was fine" "runs perfect" . the car continued to smoke and smelled bad. they said that is my fault for not making oil changes on time. i did some, missed one or two. kia refuse to repair my car. kia does not answer my phone call. my car has been in my garage for 6 moth.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sorento. the contact stated that the abs warning indicator and two other warning indicators randomly flashed. in addition, there was an abnormally loud knocking noise that occurred randomly. the dealer replaced the two rear wheel hub assemblies, but was unable to replicate and diagnose the engine assembly failure. the dealer kept the vehicle for a day and test drove the vehicle, but provided no solution. the dealer stated that the manufacturer was aware and there were several tsb alerts. the manufacturer had not provided a repair solution. the approximate failure mileage was 40,178.

I was travelling about 30 mph on a city street when the gasoline pedal would not work. i pressed the gas pedal and nothing would happen. about 5 seconds later a few lights on the dashboard lit up and then the entire engine shut down. i coasted to the curb in a no parking zone. i tried to restart the car but it would not "turn over." approximately 5 minutes later the car started and i drove approximately one minute when everything happened exactly the same way again. i called the kia roadside assist and they towed the car to the dealership. i am awaiting an answer from the dealership. my wife also was driving on the highway 2 times in the past at approximately 70 mph when the vehicle would slow down in a fast manner by about 20 mph. she could then speed up again. the dealership could not find an answer for that problem.

On tuesday, august 30th, 2016, my husband was driving in our 2013 kia sorento with our two toddlers when the car just stopped running with no warning whatsoever. he was going approximately 45 mph driving straight when the failure occurred. we lost all power including power steering so it took all he had to coast and pull over safely. he called kia who got a tow truck en route to tow the vehicle to our dealership. my dad had to come by to pick up my frightened girls while my husband waited with the vehicle (it took two hours). we have never had any major issues before with this vehicle and faithfully had it maintained through the dealership. the next day, the service department gave us news we were not expecting; the engine was blown as we broke a crankshaft. this vehicle only has 36,000 miles on it!! luckily this is covered under the warranty since they verified that it was properly maintained by them. fast forward a week and we get the call tonight that kia has yet to release a new engine to be installed and they have no time frame.

While driving on the parkway at 55mph the engine shut down leaving me without power, the battery light and engine light came on. i was in the middle lane with my two small children in the backseat, not only did i not have power to the engine i didn't have power steering for the vehicle shut completely down. i was able to pull off the road to the side of the road, where i tried to restart the car only to smell something burning from the engine. this was the scarest moment for me alone on the side of the parkwy with two small children and traffic flying past us. my car had to be towed to the dealer and it is three days later and the car is still not starting and they can not figure out why. my car only has 61,000 miles.
