Problems with 2013 Kia Sorento ENGINE

On average, the 2013 Kia Sorento starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 74 561 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2013 Kia Sorento

My son was driving our 2013 kia sorento with 57,000 miles on it when it started making a strange noise. he pulled over to check under the hood. he didn't see anything obvious and preceded to drive home. as he pulled out onto the city street the kia stalled. we then had to call a tow truck, get it towed to the kia in amarillo, tx. the dealership said that the engine had locked and it needs to be replaced. they also said that our kia was not covered by the recall! even though it is stalling just like all the other models included in the recall.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sorento. while driving 30 mph, the vehicle stalled in the middle of traffic and would not restart. the vehicle was towed to russ darrow mazda (3520 108th street, greenfield, wi 53228, (888) 698-9960), but was not diagnosed due to the diagnostic fee. the dealer stated that the engine needed to be taken apart to locate the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and did not assist. the failure mileage was 152,000. the vin was unknown.

My car was in park idling and the engine suddenly stopped. i was able to get it restarted and started to drive home and it felt like it was going to die. i applied pressure to the gas pedal and there was nothing and could not stop. the engine died with no lights or any warnings on. i had to have car towed to local mechanic due to the dealership being 50 miles away. he looked at it and stated that it was due to intermittent engine stall, that it should fall under kia recall and that i needed to get it to dealership. he tried to contact a local dealership and was not able to talk with anyone. he stated i needed to get it to a dealership. i had it towed to dealership to be looked at. it was put on diagnose, scanned with no codes coming up. he stated they drove it for awhile and nothing happen, cannot diagnose it. this is the third time that i had to have it taken to dealership for this reason after the engine was replaced (under the recall as well) and i cannot get anywhere with it. i am afraid that it will stall while driving on the highway with my grandbabies.

Driving on freeway, engine seized. engine is blown.engine only has 34000 miles on it.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sorento. the contact stated that there was no oil in the vehicle and the oil warning indicator never illuminated. the vehicle was towed to kingdom kia (2600 n ishop ave, rolla, mo 65401) where it was determined that the engine needed to be repaired. the manufacturer was contacted. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 106,000. *bf *as

On 27 march 2019 i parked my 2013 kia sorento at the post office. when i returned, the car would not start. i called aaa who tested the battery and found it ok. the driver suggested it was the starter. i had to car towed to my regular mechanic as that is where i buy tires and figured i would have the tires rotated at the same time. this place tried a starter and that did not solve the problem. the next day they tried two additional starters before determining that my engine had seized. please note that i have 79,112 miles on this vehicle and have maintained it properly. i have all my service records. ultimately i had to have the car towed (at my expense) to the dealership. after not hearing from the dealership for 2 days, i called them. they said they did not know anything. i then called kia customer service and obtained a "case number" which is 13103094. no one at the dealership will tell me anything about the status of my car and when i call customer service i am told that i have to wait a minimum of 4 working days. in the meantime i must travel by uber which is getting quite expensive. i read an article in forbes about a recall in 2017 about this same situation, but apparently in a different engine. i am appalled that this should happen in an engine with so few miles. i do not know what recourse i have.

Engine failure recall and rod bearings not properly working. was on the highway driving when car started making a tisking noise, it would get louder as accelerating so i began to exit the highway. i became increasingly loud and the temperature starting to increase. i parked and at this time it was shaking and very loudly. recall stated correct year and model but not covered! engine not replaced however the problem is in line with the recall.

The vehicle just turned off going down the interstate and even on local roads. see others who have experienced the same problem. http://www.carproblemzoo.com/kiamotor/sorento/engine-shut-off-without-warning-problems.php

On cold start up, car expels grayish-blue smoke. has a strong rattle, like bearings rattling, then subsides once engine is warm. car does not leak oil, has had routine maintenance. has never over-heated. found recall # sc147 which appears to detail bearing issue but is not listed as a recall for my vin#. fear of fire or engine seizing.

While driving on a highway i heard a loud rattling sound coming from the front of the vehicle. i pulled over and ended up having the vehicle towed. the issue was diagnosed and will require complete engine replacement.

My 2013 kia sorento has been frequently decreasing power while driving. rpms would drop to 0. in some cases the vehicle would continue to remain at the current speed, but with the rpm at 0. in other cases, the vehicle would rapidly decelerate and stall out forcing me to pull over and restart the vehicle. this has occurred approximately 20-30 times over the last few months and has occurred while in traffic, putting myself and my daughter at great risk for an accident. there were 2 times it was very difficult to restart the vehicle. in some of these cases the check engine light has turned on but not in all instances. it is beginning to become a more frequent occurrence and i am afraid it is going to happen at a time there is a vehicle too close to me or i am not going to be able to safely pull over. when i had a mechanic run the engine code he said it came up a crank sensor issue. he informed me my make and model vehicle has received numerous complaints about this decrease in speed issue and that it could also lead to the vehicles catching fire. this is a great concern for me as i have a 5 year old child, am an emt and also a child passenger safety technician. when i contacted a local kia dealer, they pretty much stated there was nothing they could do since there is not a recall at this time. i am very concerned as kias are typically family vehicles and countless lives of children and their parents are being put at risk. hopefully further investigations will be conducted and appropriate recalls issued so that there does not need to be any further deaths or injuries. please keep me posted as to the outcome of this and other related complaints.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sorento. while exiting a highway, the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard when it was depressed and became stuck. the contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road as it lost electrical power. the vehicle finally stopped and the emergency brake was applied. the vehicle was unable to restart and was towed to an independent mechanic. the mechanic diagnosed that the engine seized and a new engine was needed. the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 17v240000 (engine and engine cooling), but the contact did not receive a notification. the contact also stated that he took the vehicle to the kia store (5325 preston hwy, louisville, ky 40213, (866) 627-6887) to have the gear shifter replaced per nhtsa campaign number: 15v626000 (power train). the failure mileage was 79,000.

Car began burning excess oil at approximately 100,000 miles, began spewing blue and gray smoke when starting cold, at 111,000 miles took for diagnostic test at romeo kia kingston. technician confirmed engine needs replacing. although the 2.0 liter and 2.4 liter engines are covered under a current recall, this is a 3.5 liter v6 engine. contacted kia consumer affairs and was denied any assistance even though the issue is the exact same as is covered under the current recall. the car was well maintained and a modern day engine should not fail at such low mileage.

Engine is knocking while in use. dealer says the engine is failing and needs replaced. issue with the engine is similar to other recalls. engine manufactured same time at same plant as other engine recalls. engine at risk for fire.

The engine failed to start. the vehicle was parked on the street during the work day. the vehicle was towed to a kia dealership. we were initially told by the kia dealership that a new starter was needed. once installed the dealership said the engine ceased. the engine only had 88,299 miles on it. the motor had to be replaced. there was no indication that something was wrong with the engine. routine maintenance was made to the vehicle. luckily we bought an extended warranty we we purchased this used vehicle and there was no out of pocket expense.however you are at the warranty company's mercy on whether or not the repair is covered. although it took some time, we were covered.

Excessive oil consumption at 92,000 miles

I previously had no issues with my vehicle, besides an airbag light that repeatedly turned on for no reason. i followed recommended scheduled maintenance and had recently had an oil change and full diagnostic. a week ago, while driving, my engine suddenly began sputtering then died. i pulled over, looked under the hood, and found nothing visibly amiss. then i got back into the car and it started back up. then after driving a short distance there was a clicking sound in the engine and my engine light had come on. i drove another 20 minutes, parked the vehicle over night and started it up the next morning. although it continued to click the engine light was no longer on. after driving about 30 minutes the clicking grew more insistent than there was a loud "snap" noise and my engine died. i towed the car to my repair shop, the kia dealership in waipahu, and they informed me that the engine had seized and was irreparable. they could not diagnose exactly what was wrong but they assured me that regardless of my diligent maintenance the vehicle was beyond reasonable repair.

While driving, the engine started to knock and seized before i could exit the highway. the total time from knock to seizure was about 30 seconds.

My daughter came home from school and informed me about a noise her car was making. we noticed knocking coming from her engine. a mechanic told us it was a bearing.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sorento. while driving 5 mph, the vehicle stalled and the check engine, air bag, and battery warning indicators illuminated. the contact powered off the engine and restarted the vehicle while in traffic and was able to drive normally. the failure recurred twice. the vehicle was taken to benson kia of spartanburg (located at 1100 n pine st, spartanburg, sc 29303, (864) 585-3611), but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000. the vin was not available.

Engine has been diagnosed as failing by dealer and independent source. the engine, a 2.4l, is exhibiting the same characteristics of previously recalled kia 2.4l engines. there is a loud noise coming form engine like a rattle after the vehicle has been driven a short period and has reached a hot temperature. noise gets louder and more consistent as vehicle continues to be driven. the dealer wants over $ 9,000.00 to replace engine with another used engine. this engine needs to be included in the recall.

I keep getting error codes and check engine ligh i check with obd2 meter 3 different codes come up 3 times each. p0638, p2106, and and p2110. i clear them check engine light goes off and then randomly it happens again i'm not sure if this is a safety issue but i just want to be sure. it happens when i'm either going 25 or 55 and accelerating

Vehicle overheated one time and numerous items damaged. i get routine oil changes and maintenance. bolts backed out of engine and misthreaded. no fire, although i stopped driving it instantly. had to repair several items. i believe this vehicle is too new to be having these damages. when i ran the vin# there is no recalls. There is i recall on the same year make and model of my car except the engine they say is the or cylinder and not the 6 but i have had a blown head gasket since i bought a car from a dealership certified pre owned and still paying on it however my call gets so hot that i have to pull over a lot to let it cool off and i put alot of money in antifreeze and water. they will not work with me at kia dealership they are saying theres no recall on the v6 only 4 cylinder and i dont have $3200.00 to just pay for it to be done. because of the same side of the head gasket being blown as the recall on the 4 cylinder as for that the recall is made because of catching fire because the head that is blown in the recall is same one as mine against the fire wall and it gets super hot like it's gonna catch fire at your feet on the inside like the 4cylinders

On december 21, 2018 i called to make a appointment to have my suv recall taken care of. they set me up with a appointment january 3, 2019 at 9:00am. well i make it to my appointment on time and hand the keys over to the service department, they tell me it should take about 45mins to a hour. 2 hours later my suv is done and they said it is fine and that they changed my oil. i appreciate the oil change but i just had it change not even a 1,000miles ago. any ways, i get in my suv and drive home, it's driving and running normal, just like it was before i brought it in, normal. takata recall on january 4, 2019 at 8:20pm i'm driving back home from shopping at to wal-mart, when my suv shuts off completely, my lights were still on, all the lights on the dash came on, i put my flashers on and coast to the side of the road. i put it in park, turn the suv off, then i try to start it, would not start, so i turn it off and try again, it struggled to start but it started up. i put it in drive and countie heading home. i get 1mile and it does it again. so i did just like did the first time and same results. finally i made it home. the next day i go to call the dealership, but i'm told the service department is closed on weekends. well i've been remodeling my home myself and i forget to call kia, my car wasn't acting weird so i kind of forgot about it. takata recall until january 11, 2019 7:36pm i drive to go drop my child off to his mother and i hear a taping noise under my hood, but it only made it that one time so i paid no mind to it. takata recall january 21,2019 7:21pm i'm driving on my way home on a back road that is a short cut from where i was coming from. an i hear this little grinding noise, and then the taping noise i heard before but it was louder and it didn't stop. my check engine started flashing so i pull over and call for help. my other half said its a rod bearing.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sorento. while operating the vehicle, a knocking noise was present coming from the engine compartment and the vehicle hesitated to accelerate. the failure was not diagnosed or repaired. the local dealer was not notified. the manufacturer was notified, but no assistance was offered. the failure mileage was 95,000.

Engine abruptly shut off while driving at 50 mph down the exit ramp of a highway. no engine knocks, sounds or abnormal signs of concern. luckily, the car was able to roll to a stop on the shoulder of the road to call roadside assistance. car was towed to dealership who diagnosed engine failure due to a problem with the "bearings" . entire engine needs to be replaced. we are the original owners of this vehicle and have had all of its servicing done at the dealership including the last one 2 months ago. we have never had a check engine light come on or had any notification from the maintenance checks that this may be a problem. we have found out that kia sorentos of 2013 with a 2.4l gdi engine has been recalled for this same reason and i strongly suspect that our motor has the same defect. after a superficial online search, there are numerous complaints of sudden engine failure in this model of kia sorentos that were not covered under this recall (sc147. i believe an investigation should be in order. should we have not taken this exit, this most certainly could have caused a high speed mva involving multiple vehicles if the car abruptly shuts off while cruising at a highway speed. note: approx. mileage of the car is 107,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sorento. while driving 55 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact coasted the vehicle over to the side of the road and powered off the engine. the vehicle was restarted and was able to drive normally. the vehicle was taken to fuccillo kia of greece (located at 4321 w ridge rd, rochester, ny 14626, (585) 720-8000) to be diagnosed, but a failure code could not be found. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not assist. the approximate failure mileage was 78,800.

While driving on the expressway (approx. 70mph) the car began to knock from engine loud. also there was a lot noise i can't begin to explain. immediately it smelled like there was a burning smell. there was black smoke coming from the exhaust. there was no issues or indications of any problems before this happened. luckily i was coming up on a rest stop and i got it into the lot and called a tow truck. of course i start making calls as soon as possible. pull up complaints about the car. but i have one of the sool vin #s not covered under the recall for the same exact thing that thousands are getting help with. still have to pay for the car. can't drive the car. 2 months now of being told there's nothing i can do.

My vehicle has gone into "limp" mode twice on the interstate and twice in local traffic without warning. the last time was yesterday, december 30, 2018. that means that i lose all power to accelerate beyond a low limit. if i pull over and restart the motor, it runs normally for several hundred miles and the mil light goes off. according to the dtc codes, i have a faulty throttle body and throttle actuator sensor, however they were checked and shown to be working normally. i searched for vehicles with similar problems on the internet and found that the problem lies within the computer. there was even a kia ecu upgrade part number supplied as the fix. when i contacted several kia service departments, i was told that they never heard of such a part number. i also contacted customer service at kia headquarters. their response was to take my vehicle to a dealership for diagnosis. this is a very serious problem - to suddenly lose power while traveling on a congested highway. i take very good care of my car. it has about 22,000 miles, with oil changes every four months. *dt *jb

The engine seized without warning while i was driving on a side street after traveling on the highway fro 150 miles. kia had a class action suit against the engine and increased the warranty to 10yr or 120k miles. mine seized at 126k miles. kia refused to fixed it and it would cost 5k for a rebuilt engine or 12k for new engine.

Car completely stopped on road while running twice with no warning lights what so ever. both time the car turned off and upon inspection it had no oil despite regular maintenance. first time the car turned off, i was told it was due to sludge/debris in engine that caused a gas sensor failure (despite regular maintenance). recommendation was to change the oil very often to clear any potential remaining sludge so we have been changing oil every 2k. despite of this, car turned off again (again no warning lights) on the highway ramp accelerating to enter the highway after filling the gas tank. this time the engine has now apparently ceased. this set of issues are described by 100s of people on the internet and mirror the issues found in the fwd 2013 engines, so it is puzzling why there is no recall for this car's engine.

Car burst into flames without any warning.

Driving fine, came to a stop sign, stopped, push accelerator and engine revved to high rpms but did not move. vehicle began to move but lacked power. about 150 yds up the road, all dashboard lights came on and vehicle shut down, leaving vehicle half way in the road on a steep, blind hill. 37 degrees outside- vehicle would not start. four year old child in the car as well

I bought my 2013 kia serento in november of 2017. i had it for 33 days and the alternator went out. i called kia in joplin and they told me to bring up there. once i arrived, and i set for over half the day, they tell me that my kia is not under warranty and it was going to cost me $1000. after having it replaced the radio shuts off and on by it's self and now the flat tire light stays on all the time. the radio turns on and off while driving and turning. please help me with this. i am told that there is no recalls on my car.

Our family was driving on the interstate and the vehicle started making a low clicking noise. we got off on the next exit and the car just turned off. no signals or lights turned on. after inspection from the dealership it was discovered that the engine rod bearing had blown out and made a hole on the engine. the vehicle only had approximately 72k miles on it. how does this happen. recalls for other kia sorento have been issued but not my 2013 kia. for this reason the engine and parts was not covered by warranty. engine was backordered from november and came in at the end of march.

Vehicle is consuming an inordinate amount of oil and experiencing a loss of power.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sorento. while driving 45 mph, the check engine indicator illuminated and the engine exploded. as a result, the vehicle caught on fire. the contact also mentioned that pieces of the engine shot out from underneath the vehicle. the contact extinguished the fire. there were no injuries. neither a police nor a fire report was filed. the vehicle was towed to dennis dillon kia (9501 w fairview ave, suite b, boise, id 83704, (208) 314-3403) where the contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in a recall. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 85,000.

This is the second time this has happened. i was driving down the highway and was turning onto an off ramp and the car have put a loud screech and all the lights flashes on and the car died. it wouldn't turn over and i had to get it towed to my house because it was a saturday. monday i called kia and they said have it towed to us and we will look at it. this has been a recurring problem since i bought the car just less than 2 years ago. last time it went to kia it cost me $1500. this should be covered under the engine warranty or nation wide law suit that's going on.

Suddenly developed a cyclic knocking in the engine especially at start up and initial acceleration. was driving the vehicle on the interstate when engine seized and car shut down.

My engine oil is disappearing. the dealer has checked twice and found no evidence of leak or signs of burning oil. after 2000 to 2500 miles the engine is completely out of oil with no oil light staying illuminated. the oil light blinks for a second and goes off and would be very easy to miss. i feel that this is directly related to the non collision fire issue that this same engine is having. if i were to not see the oil light blink, the car could be driven home and have a major failure. all maintenance except one oil change has been done by two local kia dealers and at proper intervals. i have owned the car since new.

Every time i get an oil change there's no oil in my car there is also no leak at all i've always got my oil change early or on time

The engine began consuming noticeable amounts of oil around 80,000 miles. confirmed no leaks or defects where present with mechanics & dealership. at 100,00 miles the engine burns off 4-5 quarts in less than 1000 miles. this requires constant monitoring, risk of engine failure, & high cost of maintenance.

Takara recall, monday september 17,2018 my kids read bright to a kia dealership for an oil change before leaving for a trip the following day. tuesday september 18,2018 were left for our trip from missouri to florida for a vacation. my car had only 63,700 miles on it. we got into mississippi and stopped for gas. a few miles down the road i heard a noise in the engine, we stopped to see if maybe we had just got bad fuel and treated it for that and checked the oil, all seemed fine except for the noise in the motor. we got 5 more miles down the road and my engine made a very loud grinding noise right before our check engine light came on and my husband felt parts falling into the oil pan and we lost all power in the vehicle and we were barely able to pull off the highway. we sat in a ditch in the middle of mississippi in the 92 degree heat with my little sister in the vehicle and decided to try and get a tie truck. 45 minutes to an hour later we finally got one there and when he tried to start my car it would crank and fire but did not sound well so we immediately shut it back down. we got the kia to the dealership and they told us our motor was completely done and needed to be replaced. now we are still waiting for a call back to see how long the motor will be on back order and when we will get our car back. i don't even know now if i want to put my child back into this vehicle for fear that it could hurt or even kill us. my husband is a 3 time liver transplant patient and a kidney transplant patient from birth until recent. this was not a very good situation to have him in in that kind of heat in the middle of a state we don't know anything about. luckily we had just stopped at a gas station so he had some water to drink. this is not the first or last incident with this vehicle and a recall needs to be put out a.s.a.p before someone is hurt or killed.

Twice my vehicle has lost power. i am driving normal speed down the interstate when the engine light comes on and the acceleration drops dramatically with no warning. extremely dangerous on an interstate when you speed drops from 70 to 40 with no warning. have had it fixed once and it has happened again.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sorento. the contact stated that while driving at an unknown speed, there was a burning odor coming from the cabin of the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the local dealer fenly kia (5325 west sahara ave las vegas, nv 89146) who was unable to duplicated the failure. approximately 3 weeks later after restarting the vehicle, a whining noise was present and smoke came from under the hood. the vehicle was towed back to the dealer who diagnosed that the engine was faulty and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 115,500.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sorento. while driving, the check engine, oil, and battery sensors suddenly illuminated. after stopping the vehicle and turning the engine off, the vehicle could not be restarted. the vehicle was towed to the local dealer (kia of aberdeen, 4702 sw dr, aberdeen, tx 79606) where it was diagnosed that the engine seized and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 109,000.

Engine had been making a noise (humming and grinding) when vehicle was operating between 40mph and 60 mph. brought to kia dealer who stated it was the new tires we bought from meineke. brought vehicle to meineke who said it was not the tires. was driving vehicle and while exiting highway the engine shut off and had to pull off to the side of the road under 0 power. vehicle would not start even though there was still battery power. vehicle was towed to meineke who told me that there was no oil in the engine. we had an oil change done in may 2018 at the milford ct kia and was not due for another oil change until october 2018. the vehicle had approximately 800 more miles to reach the 3000 mile mark for an oil change also. i had the vehicle towed to milford kia who is still examining the issue. kia stated they would check with kia motors to ascertain if this issue is covered by a current engine recall for 2013 kia sonatas.

The car was taken in for a recall and i was told it passed the test , for now, but i need to continue to bring it in periodically for checks. therefore the car is potentially dangerous and the engine could seize while driving. no one should be forced to drive a car like that and the recall is not complete but yet they refuse to remedy the problem. if the car was safe, then it wouldn't have to continue to be checked for the same problem. kia knows there is a problem with the motor and refuses to fix it and instead is making people continue to bring the car in for future checks. the problem could still occur without any warning as they know the engine is defective. they are using deceptive practices and putting peoples lives at risk. i am stuck with an unsafe car and if i sell it, i would have to disclose that to the new buyer, to do otherwise would be very wrong, although kia doesn't seem to think so. i was quoted an amount much lower than the trade in value because of it.

Kia refuses to replace the known defective engine. my husband took the car into the dealership for the sc147 recall and was told it passed, "for now" but it would have to continue to be checked. kia knows the engine is defective and has placed myself and my family in an unsafe and potentially life threatening situation and i don't feel comfortable driving in a car where the engine could seize at any time without prior notice because kia knows the engine is defective but is waiting for it to fail the test. that is wrong and it could happen prior to a periodic recheck and no one in their right mind would feel comfortable driving a vehicle like that and kia is using deceptive practices by refusing to replace the engine that is knowingly defective. not only that, but in order to sell the vehicle ,which we now want to do because we do not feel safe in it, we would have to inform the potential buyer otherwise it would be negligent not to. a trade in value was given to us that was way below the trade in value and it is because of the open recall.
