Recall notice for engine and engine cooling recall power train
While driving to tucson from mesa on interstate 10, my engine started making knocking noises and lost power , thereby stalling by the roadside. it has 89,000 miles on and has been meticulously maintained with regular oil changes. i towed it to my mechanic who said the vehicle had suffered a catastrophic engine failure with metal shavings from the failed bearing all visible on opening the valve cover. he suggested i contact kia to see if this engine was part of the recall sc 0147 which is a recall due to this kind of failure from a manufacturing defect. after investigating, kia denied my request stating this particular engine was not under recall and therefore could not have suffered this same defect. they refused to tell me when and where the engine was manufactured was manufactured, in my attempt to link the engine with those under recall, just stating it was not part of the recall. i therefore have to meet the cost of replacing a whole engine that my mechanic believes suffered the same manufacturing failures as the the ones recalled. this is not fair.
Our vehicle is consuming an entire tank of oil under 1,000 miles of driving. the engine must have something wrong with it, but the dealership insists the engine is normal. they agree the problem is bad but take no responsibility for the engine. the suv runs weaker than normal with less power than when we bought it 2 years ago now. it is driven less than 40 miles a day for work commute and consumes oil at an astounding rate. while i know there is some type of engine recall for this model and year i am confused as to why our vehicle is not being taken care of as it should be.
Tl* the contact owned a 2013 kia sorento. while the vehicle was parked running and, it caught on fire. from the fuse box. the fire department was not notified. the contact extinguished the fire with a fire extinguisher. there were no injuries and a police report was not filed. the dealer (matt taylor kia, 2784 n columbus st, lancaster, oh 43130, (740)-204-6590) was contacted to schedule a diagnostic appointment. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 33,000. *tt consumer stated car was parked when smoke started coming out of the car. updated 02/01/19*jb
I was traveling down a route 30 in greensburg, pa at approximately 45 mph. there was a slight clicking noise and then silence. no noise. the engine light came on. the gas pedal would not work. the power steering would not work. i was able to coast into the mall parking lot. i had my vehicle towed to allwine curry auto sevice, a local garage, for evaluation. i was told that the engine was shot and that a used one could be installed for $3500. we purchased our vehicle used from smail kia in may 2017. we have our oil changed every 6000 miles. we have not had a oil light come on or any warning that there is a problem.
Engine failure while driving down a major highway in heavy traffic. same issue as recalled engines but kia refuses to address the issue on this vehicle.
While driving 60mph. the engine started to loose power and the engine seized causing a connecting rod to be ejected out of the bottom of the engine. the vehicle had 29,200 miles on it. this is the 2.4 engine. not the theta engine, but the same bottom end as the theta engine!!
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sorento. while driving from new jersey to florida, the contact noticed that the oil level was low. the contact stopped to add oil to the vehicle. once the contact arrived in florida, the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to an unknown kia dealer in florida, but was not diagnosed or repaired. the vehicle remained at the dealer with possible oil and engine failures. the contact stated that the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling), but she was not informed of it when the vehicle was purchased in july of 2017. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 78,900.
Spontaneous vehicle fire. traveling on us-27 in florida, stopped at red light and smoke started coming out from under the hood, proceeded through the light once it turned green to get to the side of the roadway when smoke started through the vents and flames came out from under the hood as well. car became disabled and 3 of us jumped out and ran down the road, away from the car. the entire car went up in flames in a matter of seconds from exiting.

Pcm recall. vehicle stalls at stops and slowing of vehicle. august 6 turned off engine would not restart after parking in driveway and turning engine off. august 4 and 5, 2018 vehicle stalled when i was coming to a stop on the road in town.
While driving on congested highway at ~40 mph, the engine suddenly locked up and vehicle abruptly stopped. diagnostics from dealership validates the engine had a major mechanical failure. dealership also validates vehicle was highly maintained. other kia sorento 2013's have been recalled for same problem. however, this vin has not been recalled yet. please review.
I was driving in a highway to work, when the car started to slow down, puttered a bit quickly shut off and on- and then the engine picked up and started making a noise. i pushed on the gas and the engine churned up smoke and the car started slowing down as cars were coming up behind me on the highway! one car stopped quickly behind me, as the car came to a slow pace. the engine didn't turn off but then it clinked for the rest of the 400ft as i pulled in and parked it. i could only go 10miles per hour or slower the rest of the highway.
Driving auto on i-75 south near ft. myers, fl, car engine spontaneously caught fire. entire auto burned to nothing but metal. both myself and my wife were able to open the doors and get out although all power was lost as we were pulling over the side of the highway. within four minutes the car was completely engulfed in fire.
Engine seized up while driving on the highway causing me to have to dangerously cross over all lanes to the shoulder of the road. after getting it towed and looked at by mechanics in two different locations i was told that the engine needed to completely be replaced. kia said they would not replace this even though the car is a 2013 with 61,947 miles on it
My family had just returned from a north carolina vacation on which we traveled in our kia sorrento on the 23rd of june. we had been driving on major interstates without the slightest thought that our kia was possibly unsafe to drive. more recently on the 29th of june, i just insisted that my 19-year-old daughter take my kia to new jersey because i felt that my car was a better choice than her older model ford ranger to go on that long trip. it was only a few hours after she returned home on june 30, 2018, that i was driving my husband and two children to a graduation party not far from my home when the car stopped working while i was operating the vehicle. luckily, i was able to steer it off of the road with great effort and without any incident or harm to my family. i am very upset over the incident that occurred. on monday, my husband spoke with the dealership where i purchased my car, and he found out about a recall on the engine. needless to say, i am infuriated! i researched the recall and saw that on your website that the recall date is 3/31/2017. i do not feel that it is my responsibility to research recalls. i have my vehicle regularly serviced and inspected at my kia dealer or one of its other affiliated dealerships and at no time was i informed that this recall was in effect. this recall has been issued for over a year, and i was not aware of the recall. it should be the mission of any automotive company to ensure the safety of the customers that purchase their products including vigilant notification efforts regarding recalls that could put drivers in life-threatening situations. i feel that kia has not put forth their best effort to ensure the safety of my family. when i called kia, i was told that there was one mailing and no follow up was conducted. i did not receive the notice in the mail. my car is at a kia dealer waiting for an engine.
While driving car home from a short trip, we started noticing a noise that seemed to sound like a small muffler leak. no loss of power or any warning lights were apparent at all. continued driving thinking i could have the hole in muffler fixed the next day. after traveling some 30 miles to our exit, getting off the enter state, the car stalled, still no warning lights indicating anything was wrong, . the car restarted and i continued to drive home until it stopped again. i called for road assistance and had it towed to my mechanic.
Tl* the contact called on behalf of his daughter who owns a 2013 kia sorento. the contact stated that while his daughter was driving at various speeds, the vehicle shuddered while the accelerator pedal wass depressed without warning. the vehicle was taken to bulldog kia located at 4305 atlanta hwy, athens, ga 30606 (888) 348-8159 where it was diagnosed and determined that the engine control unit (ecu) needed to be reprogrammed. the software was updated however, the failure recurred. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling). the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 80,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sorento. while driving 70 mph, the vehicle stalled and all the warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was able to coast to the side of the road. in addition, the check engine warning indicator intermittently illuminated while driving. the contact restarted the vehicle and was able to drive. the vehicle was taken to huffines kia mckinney (1201 n central expy, mckinney, tx 75070, (888) 450-2260), but the failure could not be duplicated. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 120,000.
103,000 miles on my 2013 kia. i'm driving at about 40 mph on the interstate during rush hour traffic. the car dies. after having it towed and inspected, the diagnosis is, "seized engine". after dropping the oil pan, pieces of bearings and metal shavings are everywhere. this sounds to me exactly what kia has recalled thousands of cars for. why isn't my kia under recall? for such a new car to have an engine seizure from worn out bearings seems like a faulty build.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sorento. while driving 55 mph, the contact heard a loud noise under the hood of the vehicle. the contact was able to coast the vehicle onto the road shoulder where it was towed to an unknown dealer. the dealer diagnosed that the engine failed and needed to be replaced. the dealer did not disclose what caused the engine failure. the manufacturer was contacted and stated that they would assist with the engine replacement. the contact stated that the vehicle had been at the dealer waiting for a new engine for over four months. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 120,000.
Less than 3000 miles after kia did a oil change covered under warranty for engine recall did i find out that my engine was completely out of oil. the dealership took my vehicle and after 3 months a new engine was put it. i got the vehicle back still experiencing problems with the vehicle rough idling, problems accelerating and sputtering while driving.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sorento. while driving approximately 60 mph, the engine suddenly malfunctioned and the vehicle stalled. after stopping and checking under the hood, the contact noticed smoke coming from the engine. the vehicle was towed to koons kia (9610 reisterstown rd, owings mills, md) where it was diagnosed that the engine was blown and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 101,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sorento. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling); however, the parts to do the repair were unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the dealer (pitre kia of las cruces (955 s valley dr, las cruces, nm 88005, (575) 524-7721) was contacted and confirmed that the parts were not available for the recall remedy. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue and was not able to confirm when the parts were to become available. the contact had not experienced a failure.
Driving down the highway and car cought fire. if it wasn't for the car next to us who signaled to pull over we would have been toast.
Recall 2013 kia sorento vehicles engine knocking sound
Driving down the road in downtown reading and the engine seized. towed the vehicle to a local garage and determined the engine seized. towed to a kia dealership and they are only willing to discount 1000 for a new engine replacement. this is the 2nd kia we have had an engine seize up. approximately 2 weeks earlier we had a 2015 kia sportage throw a rod through the engine. kia is taking responsibility for repairing the vehicle, towing and rental care on this vehicle. apparently there is a defect in their engine design. other 2013 kia engines have been recalled and we are wondering why this particular one is not covered in the recall. i have not received a recall notice for either vehicle.
The when is in motion or driving it feels like dragging and looks like it wants to change gears but it don't when it needs too . i am scared this can be one of those cars that are getting in fire i am always having the kids in this car what can i do .,.. and is an ongoing just very worry
While driving on the highway at 65 mph the engine suddenly stopped running. no noise, no warning, just ceased operating. our mechanic has determined that the engine has locked up. he checked recall on 2013 kia sorrento's and some 2013 models had extended warranties given due to this issue. i have been informed that my vehicle has no recall. i want to make sure of this, and educate others that may suffer the same issue with this model. now it is in need of a new engine.
2013 kia sorento. consumer writes in regards to engine failure. *ld the consumer stated the manufacturer and dealer were both notified but could not offer a solution.*js
Vin is [xxx] 2009 kia rio 5 sx- after driving to san diego and back to portland or, our engine began to putter and had issues accelerating and smelled like it was on fire. we also noticed a rattling sound that increasingly got louder. once home the engine light came on so we took it to the shop we get all of maintenance done and they said that they spoke to kia and from what they see and hear, we will need to get a new engine. they even said they would not work on the engine due to liability concerns. i then called a kia dealership and they said it sounds like i need a knew engine, even with out bringing it to them. then i took it to the kia dealership i purchased it from. they said it would cost about 500 bucks to have the shop open the engine up but from the sounds and smell they said i will need to get a new engine. kia has stated that my car is out of warranty and that the engine is not the one that was recalled and in a lawsuit already. the issue with that engine is the same as my engine now. a car that has been maintain religiously by the owners manual and is only 5 years old of which i owned it for 2 of those years, with 125874 miles should not fail like this. i have been trying to work with kia corporate but they keep coming back with i will need to pay for the new engine because the failure was due to poor maintenance (not true) and because the engine i have is no longer being made or used by kia. the cost is between 5000 and 10000 dollars and their good will offer was to pay 1200 of that. they haven't even opened up the engine to find out whats wrong.... information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
At 89k miles, i was driving approximately 65 mph on an incline on vacation 700 miles from home, i heard a bunch of noise coming from underneath the vehicle. all the lights on the dash lit up and engine stalled. i coasted across 2 lanes of traffic and came to a stop on the side of the road. i had the car towed to the closest mechanic for inspection. the rod had blown a hole in my engine with no prior indication that anything was wrong with the vehicle. i called kia consumer affairs who told me to have the car towed to a kia dealership for inspection which i did. the cost for repair is $10k , kia states that my 2.4l engine is not part of the recall or affected engines. my car has been maintained and the oil was changed before we left on this trip. both the service manager at kia and the mechanic at the other shop say that this scenario is consistent with the other engine failures that are included in the recall. the lower block is in fact exactly the same engine. heather from kia took my original case information (4/04) and said i would hear back. two days later i called again and spoke with helena who also said she would work on it and call me back. she also said this vin was not included in recall "yet". 7 days later and no response, i called again. this time the rep told me that helena had tried to call me and because i didn't answer the phone, she closed my case. this is a complete lie, i have my phone with me 100% of the time and have been anxiously awaiting a call. do they not realize caller id is available for a records check? they have supposedly reopened my case and i should hear back in 48 hours. no vehicle should have an engine failure at 89k miles. kia made money on the sale of all of these vehicles and now they are making more money on customers having to buy new engines at $10k? they will be hearing from an attorney if this is not resolved.
While driving at about 60 mph, in drive, my engine started knocking and it appeared to be a rod or crankshaft bearing. drove to kia dealer and they said that i would need a new engine. i was told it was not covered by warranty because i was the second owner. i have regular oil service changes and the car's mileage is about 56,000. it is still at the dealers yard. we bought the car in 2013 with only about 11,000 mileage.
Engine on vehicle locked up while driving on the interstate doing 75 mph with no worries or indication that something was wrong
Purchased the sorento february 2017, and had noticed a miss in it in november. sometime in march, the vehicle was down to about a quarter of a tank of gas and it started jerking very badly and losing power.
I am the secondary owner of a 2013 kia sorento, with 45,000 miles and the 2.4 l theta 11 mpi engine. after working on march 2nd 2018, i started the car to go home and heard a very loud clanking noise. it was so bad i called to have it towed home because it was way to late to have towed to a dealer. here comes the bad news. kia mechanics came back to tell me i had thrown a rod and the engine was ruined. what? at 45,000 miles? how is that possible? well at least i have a warranty right. oh no. turns out i am 14 days past the 5 year warranty. because i am not the primary owner the $6185 bill to fix it would have to come from my pocket. i called kia corporate pleaded my case and got a case # to see if they could do anything about my situation. after 2 weeks in limbo and over $400 in rental bills. kia came back with nope, to bad not under our warranty and the recalls for the same problem on the sorento engines don't cover your car because it was made in the georgia plant and not the iowa plant. so kia will only take part blame for these same engine problems. and every one who has a blown engine not made in iowa is out of luck with a huge repair bill. well there is a class action lawsuit for the kia's with the gdi engines. any one thinking we should do something about the cars they are trying to sweep under the rug. email me. i need a new hobby. still in limbo with no car. Car recalled due to defective manufacturing process leaving metal shavings in engine. took to dealer oct 2017 as directed. dealer changed oil and reported no problem. car was serviced regularly and ran no problem oct 17 until feb 15 2018. no engine warning light activated ever but engine seized while driving in 4 lane traffic during rush hour traffic. dangerous push car across multiple lanes with good samaritan help. car towed to dealer. at my expense. no car now for 4 days. dealer (kia berwyn il.) not returning phone calls. dealer evidently did not check for metal shavings in system at time of recall. car seizing and smoking while going 40 mph was a major safety hazard. dealer service employee did not mention the safety recall in 2017 & fact we complied as instructed. have been reading blog posts regarding similar problems not being honored by kia and i now know about threatened class action law suit. if kia will not return my calls & replace engine at no cost i will seek legal remedy. please advise. thank you. When sharply turning right into a parking spot there is loud knock seemingly coming from under the hood. i checked this site for any recall notices and read the following recall: nhtsa recall number: 17v-224, recall date: march 31, 2017, manufacturer recall number: sc147 which effects this sort of issue. i have never received any notices from kia informing me of this safety hazard or an opportunity to have it fixed.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sorento. while driving 40 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and then towed to sunset kia of bradenton (4770 14th street west, (us41), bradenton, fl 34207, (941) 752-1000) to be diagnosed. the contact was informed that the engine failed due to metal shavings that were found in the engine upon inspection. the vehicle was not repaired. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling). the manufacturer was contacted that a used engine would be provided for the replacement; however, a labor charge would be assessed for the repair. the contact was provided case number: 12622086. the approximate failure mileage was 75,000.
Car has been completely fine. driving home all of a sudden i hear a loud noise and feel vibration. had a mechanic check the vehicle out and the engine rod is messed up. i need a new engine. going 60mph
Engine was replaced under recall in oct 2017. ever since then i have had my engine light come on for evap leaks. it has been taken back to the dealer multiple times and they either say they found a leak and fixed it or tell me they can't find a leak. light will come back on within a few days to a few weeks. new engine only had 12month/12,000 mile warranty on it even though i am still under mileage for initial warranty (at 80,000 now) they claim my car is not under the new recall and is not a fire risk. have smelled fuel once. light is currently on, dealer and kia have been no help and since new warranty is up they have started wanting me to pay for the diagnostic and repairs.
In jan. 2018 while driving on main road there was a noise coming from the engie.. oil had just been changed in dec. shortly after hearing noise the battery light illuminated and the car cut off on me in traffic. was able to get the cr to restart to lill over out of the middle of the road. when i opened the hood there was smoke coming from the oil dipstick area. i had the vehicle towed to my home where i then contacted kia and had them tow it to the nearest dealership. i was told by kia that there was a recall on the 2013 sorento gdi engines. kia suspects a blown engine at only 86,896 miles but my vin was not included in the recall because it's the 2.4l dohc engine... the vehicle is currently stil not running... i purchased this vehilce in march of 2017.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sorento. while driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle stalled and the oil warning indicator illuminated immediately afterwards. the contact coasted the vehicle to the shoulder. the vehicle was towed to the dealer (bill dodge kia in saco, maine) where it was diagnosed that the engine failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was taken to the same dealer a month prior for an engine evaluation as per the manufacturer's recall notification. during that time, the contact was informed that the engine was fine. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and case number: 112611205 was filed. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was incomplete. the approximate failure mileage was 78,000.
Engine failed at 82,000.00 miles. this is the 2.4l i-4 mpi engine that is not included in the recall. vehicle is at dealer awaiting replacement engine. technician states that the failed engine part is identical to the gdi that which was recalled. it has been a month and dealer cannot give timetable on the repair. just that the engine is on order. come on kia get your act together on this. before this incident this was the best vehicle i have ever owned.
The engine seize while diving and is not the model recall on 17v224000
Total engine failure 2013 kia sorento. was traveling along highway at 55 mph, vehicle suddenly shuddered and stalled. coasted it to the side of the road and vehicle would not start so had it towed to dealer. was advised today there was major internal engine damage requiring a replacement engine. suv only has 78,000 miles on and is not covered under kia 100,000 mile warranty due to the fact i am second owner and not original owner.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sorento. while driving at 60 mph, the engine stalled and the check engine light illuminated. the vehicle rapidly slowed down and the contact merged to the shoulder of the road in order to avoid an accident. the vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. vehicle was towed to the dealer (bob moore kia located: 7340 nw expy, oklahoma city, ok 73132). the technician diagnosed the failure as the engine. the manufacturer was contacted at 1-800-333-4542. the contact stated the manufacturer offered no further assistances. the failure mileage was 106,000.
Vehicle experienced mechanical engine failure and immediate reduction in power while driving around 30 mph up hill. failure at a higher speed of travel, could have resulted in significant danger to occupants. this vehicle was equipped with the 2.4l mpi engine, which failed in a way consistent with the recalled failure of the 2.4l gdi version. believe kia is under-representing the scope of engine problems in the current recall campaign. the engines are failing in the region of connection rod bearings and lower block, while the main difference between the mpi and gdi versions of the engine are in the upper portion of the engine involving fuel injection. believe the mpi version should be investigated for containing identical or very similar failure modes and manufacturing defects, as they are indeed the same engine family with many shared components.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sorento. while driving various speeds, the contact heard a rattling noise under the hood. the noise became extremely loud when the accelerator pedal was depressed. the contact noticed the rattling noise coming from the engine and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be taken apart. additionally, the contact stated that the mechanic recommended that the engine be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the dealer was not contacted. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling). the manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided case number: 12519740, but did not offer any further assistance. the approximate failure mileage was 84,000.
On october 6th, i was commuting home from work and my vehicle started making noise upon acceleration that sounded like something was loose. once i arrived at my house, i noticed a knocking sound as i put my vehicle in park. out nearest kia service department is not open on saturdays so i took it to a nearby mechanic. they determined there was a bearing issue and i would have to replace the engine. they had a difficult time giving me a complete estimate because they had trouble finding all parts needed. i contacted kia on monday and asked if they could help me as i was just a bit over the 100,000 warranty. they suggested i call kia and speak to a customer service rep and open a case with them. i opened a case and they suggested i bring my car into kia for a diagnostic. i brought it in on tuesday and they confirmed there was a bearing issue and the engine would need to be replaced. i was quoted $7,700 before tax for a re-manufactured engine and over $12,000 for a fully assembled engine. my request for kia to assist me with this repair was put in, i forwarded my maintenance records to the dealership and they sent that along with some photos the district parts and service manager requested of my engine. i did not hear back from kia even after attempting to follow up daily until october 25 after i requested my case be escalated. i inquired with my case manager, customer service reps, and the service manager at the dealership about what actually went wrong with my engine and how this situation is unlike the most recent recall on my same year make and model engines-only those were gdi. i confirmed that it was a rod bearing that caused metal shavings to be fond in my engine. based on my research of the recent recall, this is exactly what the issue was. i'm not sire why with so many similar complaints, other engines were not considered in the recall.
