We bought a 2005 jeep grand cherokee and use this vehicle to tow behind our motor home from that time until the present. this requires that the transfer case be shifted into neutral before towing. we have had no problems with this shifting procedure for all of the years that we have owned this vehicle (mileage 67000) until we had a safety recall from chrysler (n23/nhtsa 13v-175 reprogram final drive controller module) preformed on august 23, 2013 by our dealer, the first time we attempted to shift the vehicle into neutral after the recall repair was on september 12, 2013. the neutral shift procedure would not work since this happen right after the recall service work, the service manager decided to reset and reprogrammed the fdcm and it worked. no repair parts necessary. the shifter worked normally for three more times. on november 5, 2013 while on a trip the same shifting failure occurred. th the dealer replaced the transfer case shift motor. i don't know if they reprogrammed or reset the fdcm. total expense to us was $790.00 for the repair. it worked two more times. on november 18, 2013 the shifter once again failed. the error code once again indicated that the shift motor needed to be replaced, the same one that was replaced. since that part had just been replaced the dealer did another computer reprogram and the problem went away. the charge for this procedure was $ 47.40. i have called the chrysler group recall assistance center, every time the shifter failed and every time they state that it couldn't be an issue with the recall since it was only a software change to correct a neural shifting problem. how could that cause a problem shifting into neutral? i believe chrysler owes all owners with this recall problem a real fix and reimbursement for all expenses due to this faulty recall. *tr

Carried my jeep 4wd in for n23 recall. i use low lock all the time on the farm. never had any prior problems. was'nt going to even do the recall but got to thinking if problem did occur vehicle could roll on me while i was alone. had recall done. that saturday tried low lock and got "service transfer case" on instrument panel. could not select low. tried many times with no success. carried back to dealer. said they had a few other vehicles with the same problem and they would take care of it. they called later saying it needed a selector which was on back order. now its april 2014 and i'm still waiting for my jeep to be fixed. was on the farm the other day while it was raining. could not select low still. jeep is a full time 4wd so it pulled ok, but if it were a little worse and needed low i would have gotten stuck. when will jeep own up and fix it? another reason u.s. car companies in trouble. own up to problems and get some owner loyalty and they could make even more money. no one is responsible for anything anymore. i ordered this jeep new for its 4wd features, and 545rfe transmission. now i can't get it working. recall caused problem. make them fix it! *tr
Chrysler sent out a letter for the n23 recall. i had the recall performed and now have no 4wd low as well as many others. the local dealership has tried replacing my actuator twice knowing that the recall had messed it up. someone needs to stand up at chrysler and figure this out. there are many of us with this problem. most might not even know bc they probably do not use their 4wd low. *tr
The vehicle was parked and i attempted to start the vehicle. the car was operating properly 3 minutes prior to attempted starts. the first attempt, the engine fired up and revved up but immediately died. subsequent attempts were similar. after about 4 or 5 attempts, there was a large rattling noise and the engine became impossible to start. after towing the vehicle to a mechanic and having them open up the engine, we found that the valve seat had dropped out from the cylinder heads and must have caused the engine to operate incorrectly. the valve seat had shattered into many tiny pieces, which most likely caused the rattling noise. upon investigation i have found that the valve seat dropping out is a common issue on the 5.7l hemi engine in my jeep as well as other vehicles manufactured by dodge and chrysler. this is unsafe and should require the immediate action of chrysler to recall these vehicles and permanently fix the problem with their valve seats. *tt
Jeep is performing n23 recall for fdcm on wks. software fix is broken. recall is forcing component replacements, further flashing, and locked 4wd-lo vehicles. they are denying n23 recall is problem. i do not believe this is a single occurrence. please see: http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f67/n23-recall-issue-no-4-low-1561787/ (these are only those who have mentioned it, and out of those the ones who use 4wd frequently.) want to crack down on a failed recall, this is a good one... *tr
The transmission would not shift unless the traction control light was lit. all or some of the dash lights flash sporadically. the results have been two destroyed transmissions. neither chrysler dealers nor chrysler have been able to suggest a solution. *tr
Tl* the contact owns 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that while driving 50 mph, the vehicle stalled and down shifted independently. the check engine light was also illuminated. the contact drove the vehicle to a local mechanic, who stated that the transmission was defective. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign i.d. 13v175000 (electrical system , power train) but did not call the manufacturer or take the vehicle to a dealer. the failure mileage was 74,000.
Well they say third times a charm...or will it be death? the first incident happened when i was alone in the vehicle as i was making a left hand turn across traffic my jeep just shut down leaving me powerless..by that i mean nothing no steering no breaks no nothing! thank the gods there was no oncoming traffic at the time. the second time was a bit more nerving as my 6 year old son and myself were on the highway keeping up with the 65-70 mph flow of cars, suv's & tractor trailers when all of the sudden my engine power just slumbered off to a crawl. if i had been in one lane over and 3 seconds behind we would not be here today to tell this unsightly story! again thank the gods for looking over us or it would be another statistic on the road and another young child left without a mother (my daughter that wasn't with me at the time)so i ask how many must die or get injured before manufactures man up to their mistakes? the loss of money is nothing it can be replaced but lives can not!!!
Engine stalls when coming to a stop. this stalling at a stop only happens a few minutes into driving and disappears after about 1/2 hr of driving. the stall can be prevented by pushing the (automatic) transmission into neutral. (i.e. this looks to be a transmission control problem, not an engine idle problem). jeep dealer had car for two days and was able to reproduce stall but could not find cause and fix the problem. there is no check-engine light on. *tr
On june 11, 2013, i pulled into a convenience store parking lot. i put my (2005 jeep grand cherokee) in park & got out (the engine was still running). after a moment or so, my jeep started rolling forward. it rolled between the fueling islands & it was headed towards the street. my jeep hit a yellow pole & that stopped it from rolling into the street. (the yellow pole is a safety pole that protects the fire hydrant). i am 100% confident that i put my jeep in park before i got out of it. i was shocked & scared when i saw it rolling down the lot. i filed an accident claim with my insurance company. the damage was around $6,000. my deductible was $500. today, (august 13, 2013), i received a safety recall notice from chrysler. the reason for the recall is the "final drive controller module software may unintentionally cause the transfer case to shift into the neutral position without input from the driver. this condition could allow the vehicle to roll away inadvertently while the vehicle is parked and cause a crash without warning." i was (and i still am) 100% confident that i put my vehicle in park before i got out of it. what are my options at this point? my insurance company paid the claim & i paid my deductible. now, my insurance rates will go up. who should be responsible for this? how do i proceed? *tr
After seeing the recall on the 2005 grand cherokee on the national news i contacted jeep in reference to the recall as we own a 2005 grand cherokee. i was informed that because of our model was an a model it was not covered under the recall. we experience our vehicle not shifting properly and have researched the recall and it describes what our problem is and it is the same as the recall. i feel that jeep should honor the recall and make the necessary repairs on vehicles that experience the problems, as it creates a safety hazard when operating the vehicle. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, it rolled away in reverse and crashed into the contact. the contact suffered a knee injury. a police report was not filed. the vehicle was neither diagnosed nor repaired. the contact did not call the manufacturer. the failure mileage was 88,000.
This has happened a lot. while driving all the intrument lights will flash, causing the ac/heater to turn off and on, headlights to go off, and traction control to turn off. twice recently the vehicle has shifted itself into reverse with the gear selector still in drive. i have taken it to a shop and they went through the entire electrical system and could not find a source for this problem. all jeep owners i have talked with (over 30) have this exact same issue. this is extremely unsafe and jeep needs to be held responsible. *tr

My airbag light has come on and it, has me scare of what might happen and my truck drives like it has a transmission problem. it takes a while changing gear my steering wheel make a loud clicking sound as i turn.. while driving turning. there are so many problems with this truck from day one.. *tr
Car made a whining noise at 35-45 m.p.h. bought new tires and alignment. it turned out to be the rear differential. it was rebuilt for $1200. one week later it made a higher pitched whine. a chrysler employee told me that beginning in 2005, chrysler outsourced for cheaper bearings, and they were defective. he said they are no longer made. a whole new diff and axles had to be installed for another $2800. it still whines at all speeds now. chrysler said "live with it!', and expect it to fail repeatedly. the case had been set wrong at the factory as well. there are hundreds of these cases on-line,but chrysler refuses to acknowledge them. *tr
While driving for about 30 minutes, the gears changed from drive to the 3rd gear. transmission reves up and the check engine light comes on. after coming to a stop, and restarting it, it sometimes goes back to drive mode, but reverts back to the third gear, displays "3" and stays there. took it to a mechanic, could not fix. dealer claims no recalls for this problem, but online blogs show plenty of people with the same problem. help. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the check engine light remained illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the dealer advised the contact that there was a manufacturer's recall for the transmission tube oil seal but the recall could not be performed due to an extensive back log. the contact stated that the repair had exceeded a reasonable time frame. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 94,000.
My 2005 jeep grand cherokee (first incident) while turning a corner at approximately 15-20mph revved up, would not shift, and prnd were all lit up on the dash, as well as the engine light came on. after a few starts the engine light has gone off. second incident, from dead stop at a light and accelerating, same issue. engine light goes off again. this has now occurred 4 times within 2 months and is a safety hazard considering the fact that your speed drops down out of no where and can potentially cause a serious accidents, causing harm to car a drivers, especially behind you, them not being aware that you are suddenly about to drop speed without brake lights! *tr
I bought this vehicle through a finance company so the dealer got paid i pay a note i felt a shudder like lose of power i was told by dealer to put gas treatment in tank it was prob bad gas this was 4 days after i drove off the lot then my grandbaby almost gets run over when i put in gear park and got out i hear everyone screaming that the jeep was moving i jump in expecting to see it still in drive but to my shock it was in park.this was on day 7 after i drove off lot i drive to work and try to pull off from red light and it was like i had no transmission i have towed to jeep dealership thinking they would know best what is wrong well low and behold i get the whopper of a call to let me know that my jeep was sold to me with issues already cause i have water contamination in my transmission and did i mention their are two recalls on jeep one belongs to mine cause it is the ignition switch that almost ran over grand baby but how convenient for them to tell me that my jeep doesn't fall under the fill tube leaking into my trans recall but yet i have the same problem. how is it so far fetched that the larado's are effected.`so basically i bought a car for 12.500 for it to possibly kill my family by jumping in neutral oh but i guess i don't have to worry bout that recall since my car is sittin in jeep of @@###$$ with a blown transmission can someone else tell me if they have water in transmission without ever being in water mine is leaking from fill tube seal and blew the tourqe converter and now i need a 5000 transmission and everyone is pointing the finger at the other and i am about to lose my job from no transportation cause of this i am a single mother who put her entire savings down on a unsafe deathtrap with a warranty that nobody will honor helpppppp how do i prove my fill tube seal is leaking and try to get this under this recall *tr

When we put the car into reverse there was a rough jerk. we then put the car into drive but it was stuck in 3rd gear. the engine light is on. the car won't drive in anything but 3rd gear now and still jerks everytime we shift from park to reverse or drive. *tr
Sometimes this vehicle acts as though it is stuck in its lowest gear. if i let the vehicle cool off for 3 or more hours it acts fine upon restart. i have found a transmission recall but don't know if it is the same problem. *tr

I believe this recall applies to my vehicle. i have the v6 and same transmission it affected over 100,000 vehicles. a mechanic looked at the vehicle and confirmed the leak and shutter of the torkconverter. i bought the vehicle around the date of the recall issued and perhaps the dealership did not perform the fix prior to sale. please help i don't want my car to go on fire. recall id # 05v396000 - power train:automatic transmission recall date: sept 14, 2005 component: power train:automatic transmission model affected: grand cherokee units affected: 101925 summary: on certain sport utility vehicles equipped with 3.7l engines and nag1 automatic transmissions, the air conditioner evaporator condensate water may enter the transmission at the fill tube grommet seal. this can result in shudder during torque converter clutch engagement. consequence: it can lead to increased transmission operating temperatures, boiling of the water, and a subsequent purging of transmission fluid into the engine compartment potentially resulting in an underhood fire. remedy: dealers will inspect the transmission for leakage at the fill tube grommet seal. if no leak is detected, a new fill tube grommet seal and water deflector shield will be installed, and proper alignment of the fill tube verified. if the presence of a leak is detected, the vehicle will be evaluated for shudder during torque converter engagement. if no shudder is detected, the transmission will be triple flushed, and new fill tube grommet seal and water deflector will be installed and proper alignment of the fill tube verified. if shudder is detected, the torque converter will be replaced, a new fill tube grommet seal and water deflector will be installed, and proper alignment of the fill tube verified. the recall began on october 31, 2005. *tr

I "recall" driving one evening on a major highway in my recently purchased 05 grand cherokee when suddenly i lost all power. i was traveling in a congested area at 65 mph with lots of semi's surrounding me. thank the god's i happen to be on the perfect incline leading to an off ramp at the time of this engine power failure. i'd hate to imagine the out come had i been one lane over a few seconds prior! my son who was only 5 at the time was a bit freaked out from the whole ordeal. but my biggest complaint is the fact that i'm a jeep girl and a faithful one but after my constant battle with this less then desirable hunk of junk i'm thinking of cheating with a ford! after my daily failures with this thing i did some research and found that this vehicle far surpasses the two recalls in my short 3 years of ownership. i'm most upset with my dealership due to the fact they forgot to mention a few hundred drivers of this prior rental truck with an accident that was more than a skip over the curb. they offered but never made good on providing me with owners manual...guess they were worried i would notice the past safety recalls that were never done. so i have had and continue to have every system malfunction on this heap known to mechanics. i'm sick and tired of paying for things that "jeeps are known for" when in truth its all been a result to the viscous cycle of recalls that were either never done or never the proper fix to begin with. so i beg the heads, money and engineers of chrysler group llc to get your [xxx] together and do the right thing by removing the 2005 jeep grand cherokee 5.7 liter with a hemi death trap off the roads! its quite obvious from the first recall only three months after its manufacturer date this truck was meant to fail...!!! so please stop the duct it fix it or[xxx] it! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

2005 jeep cherokee. consumer states several problems with vehicle including electrical, brake system issues, battery failure, alternator failure, 3 broken stems and repetitive issues with a transmission filter *tgw the consumer stated the transmission problem would often leave him stranded. the transmission would often cause the vehicle to lurch forward or backwards when the transmission finally engaged. the vehicle has stalled at intersections while making turns which caused the consumer to lose steering ability. *jb
2005 jeep grand cherokee. consumer writes in regards to transmission failure and seeks reimbursement for repairs. *smd the consumer stated in february 2011, she parked her vehicle overnight in her garage, after having driven it throughout the day without problems. when she started it the next day, the gears would not engage. she spoke with a mechanic, who suggested the transfer case was in neutral. subsequently, the vehicle was towed to a nearby transmission shop. they ran a diagnostics and the codes indicated the transmission was faulty. based upon their recommendation, she had the transmission replaced.
My jeep transmission is defective and keeps blowing filter off or splitting them...when this happens i am traveling down the road at 60 mph..my vehicle jolts as if i have slammed the gears in park...this could result in major injury if the wheels lock while im going that rate of speed...after extensive research online i have found that many consumers who have 05 jeep grand cherokee are having the same problem however the dealerships seem to deny the fact that there is an issue with the components of the transmission...i have found many consumers have had issues with the transmission control module, shift solenoid, and the filters for the transmission.. this has been a ongoing issue and i am surprised that this has not been recalled...this can happen at any time...while driving down the road...or pulling out in front of traffic....i am worried that i will crash or someone else will crash into me in the event that my transmission fails again...i have had it repaired 6 times over 3 years now for the same issue and no longer feel safe while driving...i would like to have this matter investigated with chrysler, llc so that they may recall the products and take the time to repair these defective transmission components.. *tr

While driving my 2005 jeep(with my 2 year old daughter in the back)on a friday evening my dashboard lights and headlights went nuts. they flashed on and off for about 30 seconds and it was pitch black-i was going about 60mph. i decided to take it really slowly but keep on driving,i had issues earlier this year with some shifting module.i really get freaked out about this stuff when my daughters in the car but it was fine for the rest of the weekend .then monday comes. i was on the highway doing about 70mph when it happened again. this time it was not my front lights but it was the dashboard again for about 2 minutes. i called chrysler because i have a power-terrain warranty i thought it my be covered. but i need to pay to have it diagnosed-not easy in december right before the holidays. the other problem is a "pop" or "lock" when i'm driving. it seems to be coming from the back. almost like the brakes locking???and again have to pay to just have it diagnosed. what happen to the public calling and explaining the issue and the tech saying"oh i know what that is"or "yea sounds like your blank is loose" i just bought this not even 2 years ago and already dumped over $1000 for parts. it seems like a lot of others are having these issues. diamler chrysler should recall these issues for safety purposes. *tr
My 2005 jeep grand cherokee started acting up about a year after i purchased it and has progressively gotten worse and worse. it has problems shifting and identifying what gear it is in on a daily basis, for example when i put it in drive from park prnd will all be illuminated like it doesn't know what gear it is in and it will make a loud thud sound. then when you drive it won't shift from first gear and will rev up or it will get stuck in 3rd gear and won't down shift. sometimes it will be driving normal and when i stop at a stop sign and then go to pull out into traffic it will stall right in the middle of traffic and i can't get it to snap out of it! it will also decide that it doesn't know what gear it is in while i am driving on the expressway and will start to rev up and freeze on me. this is very unsettling and dangerous and could defiantly cause a serious accident. from what i have read in other reviews many people have this same problem with their 2005 jeep grand cherokee so it doesn't seem like just a coincidence to me and something should be done. i have taken it to different mechanics and no one can give me an answer as to whats wrong or how to fix it. *kb
We own a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. when the vehicle was 2 years old and at 35,000 miles the check engine light came on indicating the transmission control module. this was replaced under warranty. my husband was kind of concerned that they had the part in stock for a two year old vehicle but we had it fixed and went on. now it is three years later at 89,000 miles and the same part needs to be replaced. they want us to pay 750 to have it replaced. we filed a case with chrysler and they want us to have it diagnosed for 89.00 at their dealer and then they will discuss whether they will help pay for it or not. there are many other people on the web that have had the same issues. our car will light up all the gears when you are driving down the road and will not shift properly due to the engine not understanding what gear we are in. i do not want to have to worry that they fixed it and helped us this time but in 2-3 years we have to do this all over again for the same part. the gentleman my husband first talked to at the dealer we consulted before talking with chrysler stated that he has also replaced this same piece in his chrysler 300 twice. i have also seen on the car forums that the jeep commander is doing the same thing and there are numerous complaints out there about the 05 jeep cherokee. i would like to know why chrysler continues to put this part that is obviously not working in their vehicles. this is causing issues for the cars and i am not convinced i want another chrysler product. the gear shift should not be having parts replaced. i have been around many vehicles and never had this type of problem. i do not understand why a recall or something hasn't been done on this particular part. why would they not find a new way to do this type of gear shift that doesn't fall apart in two years of driving. this is a family vehicle. this is not a race car or even a 4wd. i just want to get help in case others are still dealing with this. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee laredo (n/a). the contact stated that the metal piece that covered the gear shift box broke. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the column shift assembly box needed to be replaced. the contact called the manufacturer who stated that there were no related recalls and offered no assistance. the failure mileage was 26,039.
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the vehicle stalled while driving 60 mph. periodically the contact had to drive the vehicle to the side of the road, turn it on and off and it would then restart right a way including resetting of the computer. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the vehicle needed a shifter control and a transmission module. the cost for the repairs were $1425. the jeep manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 75,600.
Sometimes when i drive the engine feels like it stalls out and my rpm's don't move, all the boxes around prnd light up and the check engine light comes on. i have to pull over and put the car in park or sometimes i have to turn it off. once this is done the car continues to drive like nothing happened but the check engine light will stay on for a day. sometimes it happens on the highway which is very scary to just drop speed down to 40. i have read many blogs about this issue. it happens at random times.
