April 2019 service shifter message kept going on and off took it to dealer and was charged to replace shifter bezel kit and jumper wiring. then in january 2020 the service shifter message came on and off again and was now charged to replace the complete electronic shifter.. message always came on while driving and went off when turned engine off. i se as arched online and found this is a common problem with this car.
Thankfully, after reading a large number of complaints from the same problem as my, we were still in our driveway when the vehicle was put in reverse and started to back out when warning came up to put vehicle in park and then select gear. so put in park and put into drive to pull back into driveway when warning came on to service transmission. vehicle only has 54000 miles on it. reading of a lot of people has this same issue, some while driving on the interstate
Service shifter dashboard message and the p. r. n. d. light up red off and on, three times so far within a six month period what do we do? jeep dealer and headquarters maintains no complains have being filed the problem happens during car moving
A message stating "service shift" appeared in the message board and red lights came on next to all shifts, while i was driving the vehicle. it happened suddenly on my drive to work.
Keep getting a notification that says "service shifter" dash light comes on along with all the lights on the shifter that light up red p,r,n,d. contacted the dealership, they said this is a problem, but is not a recall. i've done some homework to find out that this is in fact a very common issue with jeep and has been ongoing. this issue should be a recalled before someone gets hurt! at first this the service shifter would appear after my jeep was started and go away once i restarted it and would not appear again. now the "serviced shifter " is staying on and not allowing me to see anything on my dash. the dealership has notified me to get it to come off i must pay a couple hundred dollars to repair the part. 2 others where at the dealership for the same issue at the same time i was, and as you could imagine none of us were happy to learn this was not a recall. this issue needs to be recalled before someone gets hurt or dies of the faulty gear shifters in these jeeps!!!!! at first the notification came on at start up, but now comes on while driving!!
Service shifter light came on and gear shift lights are all red,p,r,n,d. looks like this is a known issue and product flaw. not sure how many people have to complain before something is done.
While driving 30mph in light traffic suddenly and out of nowhere service shifter message comes on hud. vehicle has 24k miles all the red lights light up on shifter column. after researching hundreds of jeep owners have same issue. wiring harness short and entire floor shifter needs to be replaced. problem repeats for many people. some have had to bring car in several times with recurring problem - should be a recall
Service shifter warning periodically comes on and goes off when the vehicle is turned off and restarted. when warning comes on dashboard i am unable to clear it see anything else on that screen
Similar to other jeep cherokee year models, my 2016 jeep cherokee slips out of gear into neutral while driving, either between 1st to 2nd gear or 2nd to 3rd gear. makes for a dangerous ride with my 2 children in back and the car basically stops working and cars in back of me have to slam their brakes so to not run into me. this happens randomly, whether car has been driven for 10 minutes or just started.
Vehicle engine light came on while driving. took to local dealership. code shows thermostat stuck open. at ~40,000 miles. repair was over $700.
Approx. 68,000 miles, owned for 3 years, regular maintenance and inspection. vehicle in motion on city streets turns to neutral after the first few right turns. gear shifter automatically shifts to neutral after the car's warning system reads "shift to park" while the vehicle is in drive and in motion. to restart the vehicle, the driver must place the vehicle in park, turn off the engine and restart it, however the battery light flashes. this has happened three times in as many weeks, all while in traffic. when taken to jeep dealership mechanic, no code shows up on obd. after online research, many owners of jeep wranglers, (as well as latitudes) have had this same issue. there is a consensus it may be a result of a poorly implemented failsafe that jeep installed when the engine oil is low. allegedly, on jeeps with certain engines (2.4l) they burn oil at a higher rate than what the onboard computers can gage. it appears that jeep dealerships feign ignorance with this problem. however, when other owners have pressed the jeep corp., they say they may issue a recall if enough people complain. https://www.carcomplaints.com/jeep/cherokee/2019/engine/engine_shut_down.shtml
I purchase this vehicle about 7 month ago. i took a trip to dallas texas in it, on the drive there the service shifter light came on. i pulled over to the shoulder and placed the vehicle in park and turned the engine off. i restarted the vehicle and all was well. i have continually having the problem with the service shifter light come on, and have taken it in to be service and they can find a problem. just in the last 5 days the service shifter indicator had come on 12 time.
About two months ago while driving the car chimed and the message "service shifter" appeared on the screen along with all lights next to shifter to light up red. the vehicle has to turned off and restarted to reset. now the same thing keeps happening. this never happened before the over the air update. extremely irritating and scary the first time it happened thank god i wasn't in an accident like other reports have noted. jeep needs to recall this issue and fix it!!!
Event 1 (nov 2019) was passing a car, going 68 on freeway, got into right lane backed my foot off the gas to slow a bit and the car stayed in "passing gear" revved up high on the tach. and would not come back down until i took my foot completely off the gas. event 2 (nov 18, 2019) stopped at a stop sign, applied gas to go and it went nowhere. the engine sounded like it was going fast, but i was not in gear. i had to take my foot completely off the gas, the car lunged forward with two quick hops a couple of times then went into gear. event 3 (nov 20, 2019) going slow in a parking lot the car just died on me. no reason. this jeep has only 28,000 miles on it. it shifts hard!! actually goes into gear at times so rough that it makes me lunge forward, it jerks a lot while going slow like it's not in the right gear. i am going to jeep tomorrow to have it checked out, but after reading all these complaints, i see where i might be in for a long haul.
While driving on a highway with a speed limit of 65 mph and heavy traffic, all of the sudden my vehicle would not shift out of 3rd gear. once i reached around 40mph and tried to accelerate i felt knock and shaking. the engine would continue to rev, however no acceleration or shifting would happen. it begins to sputter and feels as thought the vehicle is going to shut off.
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 jeep cherokee. while making a right turn up a hill, the vehicle stalled and "shift to p then to the desired gear" was displayed. the vehicle was pulled over and was able to restart after several attempts. the contact drove home. global jeep (1099 us-22, north plainfield, nj 07060, (908) 200-2536) was called and the contact was waiting for the service manager to call back with a diagnosis. the manufacturer was not notified. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 60,000.
When driving the jeep shift extremely hard into gear. today we stopped at a red light and went to take off the car went to shift but would not shift into gear causing us to stop in the intersection almost getting hit. we had to place it into park and restart the car to get it to move back into gear. this is an ongoing issue. the dealer cannot find the issue and will not take the time to duplicate. they show no interest on trying to solve the issue, just passing the buck.
I bought my 2016 jeep cherokee new, at 17,896 miles, a message displayed "service shifter" and all the lights on my shifter were lit up. a new shifter was installed. then at 67,631 miles, same thing happened this time they replaced the shifter bezel and wiring. both times, the vehicle was stationary but running in a parking lot.
My 2016 jeep cherokee has recently presented a safety issue. twice, in the last two days, the transmission has cut out as i made a left turn. a message appeared, "put in p to change gears." luckily, both times this happened, i was turning off the roads and into a parking lot. it scares me to drive. what could have happened if i was turning into traffic. i feel this is a dire safety issue! both times this occurred the vehicle started back up. i was close to home so i immediately drove back home. i have an appointment with the jeep service dept. tomorrow. time will tell what they say.
Service shifter light has come on for the third time since i purchased the vehicle in 2016. it's been serviced twice and last time i spoke with the dealership, they said this is a very common issue. this needs to be addressed as my vehicle is now out of warranty and i shouldn't be held accountable for the third replacement of a faulty shifter.
On various occasions (3 so far) the "service shifter" warning message came on. by shutting off the ignition the problem would clear. on numerous other occasions i got a "check transmission" ...unknown problem warning. these warning messages all occurred while the vehicle was in motion, on city streets under normal driving conditions. i took the vehicle to my dealer and a check came up with "transmission modulator, unknown problem" was noted. an appointment was made but the messages cleared on it's own (2 occasions for the transmission warning). the dealer advised me that nothing could be done without the message being active.
Service shifter warning came on dash monitor. all lights turned red next to shifter.
Service shifter light came on as soon as i shifted into park, stayed on until i turned the car off, did not come back on for the next 20 miles.
Service transmission light on while driving making the vehicle to lose power and doesn't what to move
When driving the vehicle we get a message in the dash that says service shifter and the red lights on the shifter which indicate which gear you are in all light up at the same time, park, neutral, reverse, & drive. if we pull over and turn the vehicle off it clears the error and stays off for a while. when it first started occurring, i told the service writer when my vehicle was in for routine maintenance at john l sullivan in yuba city and was told that it was not giving a code so if it wasn't happening at the when i brought it in he couldn't help. so it was only happening every few months so i didn't worry and now it is happening daily and i am sure jeep knows about this problem because there are a lot of complaints on line about the same exact thing. not sure if it is a safety issue but it is something they should own up to and take care of on their dime. it happens at any time it's moving regardless of speed.this has been happening for months but just recently almost every day.
Service shifter screen comes on and check engine light.
Multiple instances of service shifter message occurring while driving or immediately after departure. must place car in park and turn off vehicle. restart vehicle no further issues. does not typically reoccur within a few days. 1-6 weeks between occurrence. no error message, no issues noted by mechanic. concerning from a safety standpoint.
Bangs into 2nd or 3rd gear intermittently after a stop or while driving at lower speeds 25-30 mph especially. most erratic in city driving. the jolt is so hard the driver takes notice. the vehicle will hesitate at time from a stop then jump forward like a bat out of hell causing front wheels to spin. at lower speeds in city the vehicle has a delay from engine to transmission causing a jerking motion even when pressing ever so litely on gas peddle. the transmission holds gears aggressively before up shifting, so engine speed hangs high between shifts. the vehicle shifts occasionally immediately into 2nd gear from a stop and then drags it out and clunks into 3rd gear causing untimely shifting. lithia jeep and pelletier jeep both did software updates with marginal improvement or made it worse. also the transmission up shifts to soon often from 1st to 2nd gear. vehicle at times has mind of its own for transmission never really knowing what to making not very predictable and dangerous to drive. the speed control is dangerous and a nightmare. when going downhill it makes transmission go into lower gears causing engine rpm over danger zone. it feels like the engine and transmission are going to explode. the speed control is really hard to predict what it will do! i'm scared to use it! i'm scared to drive this vehicle!
Service shifter keeps coming back and all lights for gear indicator are red. dealership says to turn off and restart vehicle but it happens more frequently and more frequently. occurs when turning vehicle on.
All prnd indicator lights on the shifter unit illuminate at once, and stay lit. "service shifter" warning appears on the instrument cluster display. when "service shifter" warning is displayed, cannot be turned off and digital speedometer readings (or other information) are no longer displayed. prnd shifter indicator lights blink sporadically until warning finally displays. lights stay illuminated after warning appears. prnd lights and display warning appear while vehicle is parked/stationary as well as when vehicle is in motion. started sporadically, roughly 6 months ago (early 2019) and would typically go away if vehicle was turned off and re-started. these warnings now happen daily, every time i start the vehicle, and almost never go away. upon researching this concern online, it appears that this is a known issue that many have been experiencing since around 2012. most web inquires indicate that this may be related to a wiring harness? i took to the dealership for service and was told it would be $700 to replace the entire shifter, and that if i do not replace, i could find myself unable to put the vehicle in park. hoping that this is something that is being investigated and recalled so that i do not have to pay for something that is a recurring, known safety issue.
Service shifter light randomly comes on and turns off when engine is turned off and restarted. also overhead lights above the rear view mirror turn on and off occasionally.these things happen while in motion and are random. also when in reverse, sometimes the parking brake engages.
The 'service shifter' error message came up on my display on my 2016 jeep cherokee sport. at the same time all the lights on my gear console turned red from park all the way to reverse. all were lit red. i called the dealer to see if it was safe to drive and to make appointment. they said drive with care (like i can be careful but how do i know it won't jump gears) when i parked and turned off car and turned on again the message disappeared along with red lights. in researching online i found over 50 other jeep owners with same issue. i have an appointment to fix tomorrow but i am afraid they will say what others are reporting 'they cannot duplicate the issue' and will disregard it. the vehicle was stationary and in park at time of incident
Service shifter comes on the dash and all shifter red lights come on. have read this is a common problem requiring a wire harness and sometimes a shifter change. dealers have been charging folks for all kinds of things. seems rather abusive.
Car has completely stalled and locked up to a point where the steering wheel cannot be moved, hazard lights will not turn on, cannot change the gear at all. had to have a flat bed tow because the wheels were locked, tow driver had to use dish soap to get the wheels to slide up the ramp. jeep dealership first replaced the battery, then replaced the bcm and it is still a solid brick. they have no idea what is wrong. this has cost me $600 so far without even a repair. my 17 year old daughter is driving this dangerous car. i have seen the forums and this is a common problem with this jeep, it needs a recall. as soon as we can get it running again, we will be trading it in. i can't have her in a death trap, it stalls without warning and we had to put the hood up to warn other drivers because the hazards wouldn't even turn on. this car only has 23000 miles on it, it should really not be doing this.
All of the shift lights were red, and received a message to have shift serviced. this is the second time i had this issue. the first time was in 2017 and the shift was replaced by warranty. clearly there is a problem somewhere, there is no reason for a car that is 3 years old to have the same issue multiple times. i will be going to the dealer to get the issue diagnosed.
The car was parked. when i started the car, all lights for the gears (p,r,n,d) on the shifter were light up red and service shifter message appeared. i shut off the vehicle and restarted it and the car operated normally. 3 days later, the same thing happened. a search online has shown many jeep owners have had this issue.
We purchased a 2016 jeep cherokee and with 20k miles on it, we had a service shifter issue. brought it to the dealership and got it replaced under warranty. since then we now have a second service shifter issue. again we brought it in, as we were previously told we had a two year warranty on the part itself. now they want to replace the shifter bezel and wiring harness. searching online in forums my wife and i are apart of 100s of owners of jeep vehicles from 2016 through 2017 that have shifter problems. lastly, we were told that it was not covered by our powertrain warranty by chrysler. i feel this is a safety concern for all drivers of these vehicles and should be a recall to get it fixed. thank you
Vehicle launches into 3rd gear from 2nd gear
Was driving vehicle about 35 mph when "service shifter" appeared in the dash and all of the lights on the shift went red; was able to slow down, stop, turn the car off and back on and the lights went away. happened again the following day, driving around 30 mph this time, repeated the same actions.
Service shifter message, all lights on shifter are lit up. manual shift doesnt work. new symptom, car didnt recognize car was in drive. message appeared to shift into p then desired gear. when ignition button pushed to turn off, car restarted on its own.
Back on july 2019 my 2016 jeep cherokee was brought to allen mello service department due noise coming from the engine area and it was shaking. after they diagnose the issue (they replaced oil filter housing, drained & refilled oil and adjusted coolant lever, "rocker arm/lifter noise present at idle. replace right bank and left bank intake & exhause camshafts, liftgers, and rocker arms) i spent $3,301.05 to have it repaired and i feel as though this should have been under my warranty or chryster should have paid 1/2 of the billed. should something should have been a recalled or was this vehicle missed to be on recall safety list. this was a serious problem and was unsafe to drive likely it was fixed. but i feel i should be compensaed for all or half of the billed. see invoice attached.
Bought this car at 17k miles and now have 50k. 10k before the warranty runs out and dealer will only address this issue if the vehicle will show this issue at the time it is at the dealer. issue is unpredictable. car jerks hard from first to second gear, almost as if you have been rear ended. car has trouble shifting to higher speed upon entering the highway. there is also a pronounced "ticking" noise when engine is running/idle
Service shifter light came on. prndl red. unable to disable this warning to see speed, gas, etc. vehicle was operating fine otherwise.
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 jeep cherokee. while driving 60 to 65 mph, the check engine and transmission maintenance required warning indicators illuminated and the transmission seized. the contact was able to shift into park and back into drive in order to reset the transmission. the vehicle was taken to dan cummins chrysler dodge, jeep, ram (2021 alverson drive, paris, kentucky 40361, (859)-987-5669) where it was diagnosed that the transmission wiring harness needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 55,750.
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 jeep cherokee. while driving 45 mph, the vehicle jerked while shifting between first, second, and third gears, and lost power. in addition, the rpms failed to increase to 2,000 and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the contact disconnected the battery cable, but the failure recurred. the contact used the lpb reader and received code: p0887 (tcm high voltage). the contact called east tennessee dodge chrysler jeep ram (2774 n main st, crossville, tn 38555, (931) 463-3640), but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to nhtsa. the failure mileage was approximately 30,000.
Vehicle, while in motion, stalls and engine shuts off at any speed. being told oil burns too quickly in these vehicles and this is a safety feature the car has although it has almost cost me multiple serious/potentilly fatal collisions with my infant children in the vehicle. no oil indicator has ever turned on indicating oil level is low. had same issue with this car at 15,000 miles in which engine was completely replaced but now is doing the same thing as before. this is a well documented issue amongst jeeps - why has there not been a recall? this is a major safety concern and our lives and the lives of our children are at risk as i almost was t-boned today as my engine stalled in a busy intersection. i was attempting to turn but had not yet maneuvered and was left stalled in the middle blocking oncoming traffic on a busy city street but had had this same problem happen on a highway.
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 jeep cherokee. the contact stated that the check engine and service gear shifter indicators illuminated. the contact called jim ellis toyota of mcdonough (144 highway 81 w, mcdonough, ga 30253, (770) 288-3755) and informed them of the failure. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 55,000.
While accelerating the vehicle stalls and won't move, message comes up to put it in park and then the gear you want. service transmission. this has happened at least 4 times now, very scary and dangerous. at times the vehicle also has a hard jerk while accelerating. this vehicle is going in for service for the fourth time mentioning this issue. mechanics can't find the issue, but did see the computer did show something. only owned this vehicle for 21 months now. so unsafe while driving and the car won't move while driving! possibly can get rear ended. we don't feel safe driving this vehicle not knowing when it will happen.
Service shifter light comes on.
Reoccurring svc 4wd while driving with 'jerky' movements, each time dealer reports computer error and resets it. fourth time in 8 months.
