Problems with 2016 Jeep Cherokee POWER TRAIN

On average, the 2016 Jeep Cherokee starts to “feel” problems with the POWER TRAIN and its various aspects after 33 049 miles.

Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2016 Jeep Cherokee

Car got stuck in gear 8 on highway. has 10,000 miles on it

Beginning about two month ago, i have been going back to the dealer for drive train related issues. the initial issue was a failed rear hub at around 25,000 miles which was found during an oil change. next, the main drive shaft (propeller shaft) began making grinding noises as well as a wobble/thumping sound at highway speeds. the grinding sound was resolved but the wobble/thumping continued. the followup for that sound found failed half-shafts (both sides), failed rear differential, and failed transfer case/module. the car was returned to me without all repairs being completed due to lack of parts and "warranty not authorizing additional days of rental" the car then began to give failed parking brake service codes and check air bag system codes which supposedly are related now to a failed on board control module. when the most recent codes (today) were given the car would not shift into gear initially.

Transmission stalling while starting 0-20 mph. hard shifts and service light flashing. after several instances, vehicle transmission stopped working as i approached a stop sign. i stopped, shut off and restarted the vehicle in park, shifted to drive and the vehicle operated in reverse.

The service transmission warning came on as i pulled into a gas station, along with the transmission icon. i turned the car off to fill up. when i restarted it seemed to accelerate fine on the surface street and then highway, but the icon remained lit. the service transmission warning then came back on a few miles later and i couldn't accelerate. once i decelerated, i couldn't accelerate again. i pulled into a parking lot and restarted the car. again, it worked. when i turn the car off and on it seems to work fine until the warning comes back on (it only takes a few miles) taking it to the dealer this evening. my car is 50 weeks, 12,200 miles.

During an out of town trip (highway) drive with the family on easter sunday, my 2016 jeep cherokee limited transmission suddenly locked into 8th gear and wouldn't accelerate past 2000 rpms. check engine light and "service transmission" appeared on the control panel. in order to not be stranded, we drove the car in 8th gear for 3.5 hours back home. car would not change gears, nor accelerate. we luckily were not involved in an accident. upon arriving at the dealership (closed for holiday), another jeep owner was there dropping off his car as his was stuck in 3rd gear and couldn't accelerate past 45 mph. the service department just called me back now (next day) and said that transmission error is a software problem and needs to be upgraded. why would the car need an upgrade and make the transmission inoperable while i'm in motion inside the car? infuriating!

Vehicle started lunging forward and shifting issues while in motion. definitely a transmission issue. been in the shop for a week. technician not sure what to do about it waiting on dodge to call them back. he said either reprogram it or replace transmission.

My wife and i bought a jeep cherokee just about a year ago. we have had it in the shop three times for rolling after the car is put in park. just last saturday (25 march) my wife was getting out of the car at our daughters softball game and the car rolled backwards knocking her to the ground almost rolling over her. the vehicle engine was not running. she had to go to the doctor and receive treatment.

I bought my jeep brand new zero miles, currently its at 28k. i began to hear a flapping noise when shes on idle and the auto shut off isnt on and when i start to drive the noise goes away. later i noticed that on start point the accelerator either gets stuck or it makes the starting jolt as if i gassed in the pedal all the way. when im on the freeway and i let go of the gas pedal the speed wont decrease i'd have to use the brake pedal, obviously the speed wont decrease if im going downhill, this is when im on a flat wayward. these symptoms with the exclusion of the flapping noise on idle, happen only occasionally. my jeep is only one year old i maintain it very regularly rotate tires, fluids, the works. i took her to the dealership and im hoping a good diagnostic and a good fix, because since it happens on occasions i don't want to bring my jeep back and continue the same issue, it could be a safety hazard, shes our only family car and if something goes bypassed, unfortunate events may take place, (god forbid,) and this issue can be spotted right away, i will have peace of in mind.

Vehicle in motion, 65 mph service transmission light came on. ability to accelerate ceased, merged on to freeway able to maintain speed at 60 mph but unable to accelerate. on the way to dealership, stopped rpms went way up, no acceleration at all. purchased brand new, currently at 14,091 miles.

Had the car for a year and the thermostat blew. guy at dealership said " chrysler got a bad batch of thermostats" and that they would replace under warranty. get home and next day car had list almost all antifreeze. leaking. horribly. was driving, engine light and traction light came on. got codes ran, "thermostats rational". weight start. tried the times, started and ran rough.

Vehicle stalls out in the middle of driving, completely losing all power to the vehicle in the middle of traffic. steering wheel locks up and acceleration rapidly declines to 0. dash displays shift to p then desired gear. in order to get the vehicle working correctly again, i must shift to p and then turn the vehicle off and back on (when turning the vehicle back on, it hesitates to start). can't turn on hazards so no one knows why i am stopped in the middle of traffic. have been to the dealer two times now, going on three. being told software. regardless of that, it's very dangerous and hazardous. all it will take is someone not paying attention for myself and my family to be seriously hurt or god-forbid worse.

The jeep stalled in the middle of the intersection! several times and once as i was exiting the freeway ! the service transmission light went on and then i received the jeep back nine days later and the the engine rattles and the console cracking sounds themotor sound like it's running higher than before it was fix i took it back the service manger told me that it runs fine and i need to relax and enjoy the arts but i don't think it working like it was prior to breaking down ! it had 6949 miles on it and now the shocks seem to hit hard too ! so i not sure what's going on ! jeep corporate told me to drive it but i don't feel safe ! i asked for a better jeep! and i was told that things happen ! the service department won't look at it agian ! and the jeep seems to be pulling to the left ! but the steering wheel looks aligned!

A light on my dashboard came on while i was driving at 55 mph that read "service transmission". the odometer stopped working and my car didn't seem to be functioning properly. stopping at a light, my car nearly stalled when i needed to cross over an intersection. i had to have my vehicle towed to be serviced the following day. i was told by the service station that the issue wasn't with the transmission- but that the car needed a software update. i could have been hit when my car nearly stalled driving across the intersection. i addressed my concern with fca, but was told that software updates are routinely needed and should be done at the same time as my oil change. my car only has 5300 miles and is only driven short distances (mostly on the weekend). this issue should not be happening with a car so new and such little mileage. also, my car has been kept updated with the necessary oil changes. i don't understand why i am not notified ahead of time if my car needs these software updates? am i just expected to cross my fingers and hope this issue doesn't occur again? this issue greatly affected my safety. and my car wasn't drivable. it's both a major safety concern and an incredible inconvenience.

Yesterday i started up jeep in my garage, upon waiting for it to warm up i can here a clicking sound coming from the center counsel area, so i bend or and put my ear by the carpet, it sounds like it in the transmission, its starting today to shift weird,i need number to take it to a local dealer to check, hemet,ca mileage-5978

We have taken our jeep in countless times since obtaining it brand new in 2016 for a service shift issue. they replaced our thermostat the first time then wiring harness to the transmission/bcm the second time since then the dealership has stated with out a check engine light not to worry about this issue. every time it happens our jeep heats up past 220 degrees and starts to run rough.

Purchased my 2015 jeep cherokee in september 2015 brand new with 19 miles. the car started off running great i loved it. by april 2016, i noticed the car began to drive differently and at first i didn't think much of it but it got worse and worse. by october my car was jerking so bad, stalling sometimes and accelerating sometimes on it's on.i took it into the dealership and they replaced the transmission with only 11000 miles on the vehicle. my car drove like it once used to until about the end of january 2017. the car began to accelerate on its own once again jumping from 1gear to 3 gear and back. in february on my way to work my shifter locked on me and went completely out causing me to come to a complete stop. thank god it was 4am and no cars were out because i would have definitely been in a car accident. i took the car to the dealership and expressed my troubles with the car and they changed the shifter and did some update on the car saying that that's why my car was driving the way it was. the very next friday after getting my car back from them, i almost hit the back of a car coming down street with a slight incline and the vehicle sped up on it own without me pressing the gas from 25mph to 45mph jumping from 2 to 4 gear. the car jerked so hard felt like i had been hit by another car. i called jeep and told them i was bringing the car back it was not fixed and i almost had an accident. when they got the vehicle, they claimed when they drove the vehicle it performed how it was supposed.i have been having nothing but trouble with this car since they replaced the transmission. i called chrystler myself to express my issues with my car and they pretended to car at first and barely got in touch with me towards the end of it. finally, i found a lemon law attorney and i am currently fighting them to buy this vehicle back. i do not feel safe in this car.

While i was driving at 70 mph on a highway my jeep cherokee locked itself and would not shift and said service transmission. this vehicle has jerked into gear, has shifted hard, took a long time to shift into drive from park. took it to the dealer on 1/23/17 said that they are replacing the transmission control module. *tr

Transmission locks into gear during light throttle or no throttle loads repeatedly. happens on downhill driving or at a red light/stop sign. car has no power and has to be driven off to the side to reset computer or left sitting in an intersection while waiting for a tow truck (one time). dealer is aware of the issue and is replacing parts from the computer to a complete transmission now. wife feels unsafe in what should be a brand new problem free car

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 jeep cherokee. while driving approximately 70 mph, the service shifter indicator illuminated. the vehicle was pulled over to the side of the road and called jim shorkey family auto group at 724-204-2560 (located at 13339 rte 30, north huntingdon, pa 15642) to inquire about the warranty. the contact was not called back and the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 10,000. the vin was unknown.

When it is below freezing out the car will not shift. you can get out of neighborhood in low gear but when you go to get on highway the car just dies. dealer says this is normal until transmission fluid warms up.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 jeep cherokee. while driving 75 mph, the transmission stalled. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the dealer diagnosed the vehicle, but it was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 38,000.

Transmission slams into gear and lunges forward; feels like being rear ended. revs high and then downshifts or misses gear and slams into gear. in motion driving between 0 and 40 miles per hour often when cruising along at approx. 30-40 without warning.

My jeep does not shift out of first gear and sometimes second until the engine reves up high and then shifts suddenly with a forceful jerk. sometimes upon acceleration on the highway, the vehicle will down shift as you would expect, and then does the forceful sudden jerk when it goes into a higher gear. it has been forceful enough to feel as though someone has bumped into my vehicle. i have taken it to the dealership and to my independent car repair place and neither can find anything on the computer diagnostics. it happens randomly but has begun to happen more frequently.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 jeep cherokee. while driving various speeds, the vehicle would experience hard shifting, reduced speed, and would not properly accelerate from a standing start. the failure was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer and local dealer were not notified of the failures. the failure mileage was 27,000.

The vehicle will often shift into neutral uncommanded. the manual gear shift stays in indicated drive mode but the transmission operates as if in neutral. no engaged power or indication that it is in neutral but plenty of rpm just not engaged. on several occasions driving on freeway at 55 mph and the car just shifted into neutral. no power available so had to coast of the freeway. once i shifted to park and back to drive it operated normally. *tr

While driving i lost acceleration capability. kept happening on my way home but when i had to go across a bridge, i was slipping backwards with no acceleration and had to "floor it" to get close to 30-40 mph. very scary!! continue to happen on my way home and every light i stopped at or even if i slowed down i had no acceleration until i shifted into park and then tried to accelerate. could not even get it over a small 1-2 foot driveway incline!! will take down to dealership tomorrow to see what is going on with this used vehicle i purchased less than 3 weeks ago (10/29) with less than 6,500 mi driven on it!!

From the time we drove this vehicle off the lot brand new there have been problems with the transmission. it slips, makes a thunking sound when it's shifting gears, and on occasion it stalls for several seconds we feel that the vehicle is a road hazard. .

I purchased this vehicle in september 2016 and it was seen in the service department in october 2016 for a loud click from the brake (told this is normal) and the vehicle shutting off during idle twice. an update was done but the issue continued. november 2016 i brought the vehicle in because the back seat would move back and forth if someone was not sitting in it (they had to replace the whole back seat) but as i was driving into the service doors the vehicle skipped and tried to die with lights flashing on the dash. service could not duplicate. december 2016 brought in because the vehicle kept skipping when trying to take off from a stop. on two occasions it completely stalled but service was unable to duplicate. the vehicle also had issues with shifting too early at times and then shifting was delayed other times. once again issue could not be duplicated. later in december i brought it back again and was told there was possibly a fix. january 2017 the vehicle was brought back again due to stalling and the multi air actuator was replaced. the issue continued as the service manager searched for an answer until i had enough in october 2017 when it came to a stop for no reason and the vehicle would make a terrible noise in reverse at times. service along with fca attempted to fix it but could not duplicate the issue. when i got the vehicle back it it always skips in idle, makes a lawn mower sound in idle and when shutting off makes a whining noise. i have stopped driving the vehicle and am trying to get fca to do the right thing via georgia's lemon law. i have done my due diligence following fca's required steps and they said they cannot duplicate my issue but would give me a good faith payment for my time. i have asked to talk to supervisors etc but am told that is not their protocol and they closed my case. this vehicle is unsafe!

The service light came on to service the transmission as i was driving. i immediately checked the transmission temperature gauge and it read 154 degrees the car then suddenly shutdown. i had to coast to the side. it acted as though it had shifted into neutral but it still showed in drive. it was very scary and very dangerous. *tr

The uconnect unit quit working therefore no way to adjust radio, heat, use, bluetooth, backup camera stays on when driving frontwards down road, etc. cannot use regular knobs to adjust. have now been waiting almost 2 weeks for a new radio to see if that fixes the problem. also thumping noise in the right front in when making a turn & going over a bump at same time. buying a brand new vehicle you should not have to worry about problems like this after owning it for less than 6 months. *tr

Automatic tranmission is doesn't seem as smooth as when i first bought the vehicle, driving with more whiplash from shifting gears. vehicle accelerates slowly, but gears jump shift pretty quickly perhaps too soon before reaching proper speed (mph). accelerating overall just doesn't feel or sound right when stopped at a traffic light and then accelerating.

I have a 2016 jeep cherokee bought brand new from the dealer. at approximately 15k miles, i started hearing a clicking sound when driving from driver to reverse. i went to the dealer multiple times and was told they could not figure out what was wrong with it. finally the dealer figured out that the rear differential needed to be replaced at only 15k miles. at approximately 25k miles, i was hearing a whistling sound on the driver side front end when cruising at aprox. 20mhp or less. i took it to the dealer mult. times and they could not figure out what was wrong with it. the dealer replaced a rear axel boot for the shaft that was throwing grease, thinking that would solve the problem but it did not. i heard the whistling once again before even leaving the lot. the dealer finally figured out the driver side front end bearing was bad and would need to be replaced. the dealer replaced the shaft axle. i have had approx 4 transmission software updates done since i have had the vehicle. the dealer states this would need to be purchased for approx $140 each time after the power train warranty expires for the jeep. keep in mind my jeep has only 33k miles on it was this point. now i have a jeep that has a panoramic sunroof that makes noise as well when going over bumps and potholes and the dealer states they do not hear anything. i have a tire alignment done on the jeep at 25k miles for $120. i went back to the dealer with 32k miles on it to have the sunroof checked out and they are telling me i need another alignment. so the alignment has gone out again in less than 10k miles? there has been nothing but issues with this jeep since day one and every other jeep i have owned in the past.

Service transmission and engine light came on while driving about 58 mph transmission basically disengaged while driving on the highway. after slowing at a stoplight , the car would not accelerate and i was nearly rear ended. car has been at dealership for 5 days, due to be ready for pick up tomorrow after changing tcm. i was only offered a rental this afternoon-gee thanks!after some research, i am finding many similar stories in which the repairs do not hold and the owners have continued problems, the most worrisome is the transmission disengaging mid drive, and multiple breakdowns and service visits . i do not feel safe in this car and should this malfunction cause me to be crashed into and i survive, i will come at chrysler-who's advise thus far was that i purchase a service plan-again, gee thanks- i will come at them with a fury that is unmatched.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 jeep cherokee. the contact stated that on several occasions while attempting to drive, the transmission failed to shift gears. the engine warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the software needed to be updated. the vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. the contact stated that the vehicle was then taken back to the dealer where the dealer stated that they had no record of the software being updated. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. however, the contact stated that the manufacturer advised her to take the vehicle back to the dealer but did not offer any further assistance. the failure mileage was 21,000.

The transmission does not shift properly. i have taken it into the shop at least 4 times to get this problem fixed. they keep telling me its a software updates, but the rough shift or non-shifting starts again in about 3-4 day after i get my vehicle back. it shifts fine until 4 gear and then it does not shift anymore and grinds the gears.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 jeep cherokee. while operating the vehicle, it failed to accelerate while driving between 5-25 mph. after easing off the accelerator pedal a thumping noise was heard from the transmission. the contact also indicated that a humming noise under the vehicle was present while driving over 50 mph. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, but the failure could not be duplicated. the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the failure mileage was 100. updated 01/25/17*lj *cn

I was pulling out of a parking lot on to a city street in the middle of school traffic. i pressed the accelerator and my jeep bucked really hard. i tried to get it going but it would not go passed 1st gear. i basically coasted back to my home and called jeep to have it towed to the dealer.

It appears based on research, the listed vehicles is having the same transmission issues as the 2014-2015 models. which within several publications jeep indicated they had resolved the transmission issue in the 2016 model, that had plagued jeep in the previous two years. which appears to be an incorrect statement.

With or without ess engaged, the transmission slips for up to ~1 second. this problem is noticable by average owner when the car transitions from not-moving into moving forward. i have not noticed slippage in reverse, but i do not rule this out. i have noticed slippage when the jeep first starts moving forward. car has about 1800 miles and just started doing this very recently maybe at mileage 1600~. also, gas milage was in the past for the same trip averaging >24mpg (it formerly was ~26 i think). now same trip averages ~20mpg. car feels sluggish at times. initial thought was bad gas, but new gas -- same slippage. i have contacted fca (manuf) and will try to resolve. the gas milage is also a problem as it is nowhere near that stated in epa reported ... however, if slippage is fixed, then maybe ~28mpg is possible. very strange for new car, imho. (when car was <1000 miles, milage was ~26mpg for same trip ... then it was ~24mpg ... now it is ~20mpg ... i am now concerned.)

I went to pass a car on a two lane road. when i stepped on the gas the engine revved to a high rpm but would not speed up.the engine light lit and a " service transmission" message came up. it stayed in 4th gear all the way home ( about 45 miles). after i got home i tried to go up the driveway, about 100 yards, and the jeep would hardly move. i have 7100 miles on it. this transmission needs to be recalled !! it is a piece of junk. the dealer has had it a week and i still have not heard a word about it from them. i doubt i would get much of a trade in on this as all the dealers know this is a bad and unsafe vehicle.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 jeep cherokee. while driving downhill with the cruise control activated, the vehicle accelerated and the engine rpms revved. in addition, the transmission downshifted, but failed to engage. the dealer stated that the vehicle was functioning as designed. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 3,000.

The engine shuts off without any warning. it has happened on ramps, a parking garage, on the highway and the middle of an intersection. no warning lights come on until after the engine stops. the steering fails, the brakes fail and the vehicle rolls to a stop. often, it will take several minutes and attempts to restart the engine. i was advised by the dealership that the oil was low. the engine continues to shut off and with no correlation to time frame after having the oil replaced, time it has been driven, or duration of the trip. this is completely unsafe to the person operating the vehicle and to others on the road. jeep and the dealership have ignored the problem and i have even been told by jeep customer service that "the engine is operating as designed" which means that it will shut off without warning to protect the engine, not those inside the vehicle. they have refused to fix or acknowledge the issue, refused to void the lease and refused to replace the vehicle.

When the weather is over 90 degree the engine does not start while using the push ignition button or the remote start. the ac and radio are operational however the vehicle displays a check engine light along with other service park brake warning message. the vehicle will not start till the weather cools down and gets below 90 degrees. there is possibility this issue can arise when driving the vehicle, in which case it could be deadly.

Setting cruise does not hold with even very minor incline/decline no matter what speed set is. the increase of speed during set cruise is alarming at over 10+ miles at medium decline, and at some point car tries to slow down, but it is not a smooth transition, as it feels jerky. i have taken to lical jeep dealer, but they said maybe aftr "computer updates", it would remedy it. not! i can be on a boulevard, street, highway, etc... i have another appointment for 1-13-2017 while latitude still has warranty...no dealer is able to get vehicles in quickly, so that alone says a lot about issues with this manufacturer.... i would add that i tested cruise with that automatic engine shutoff both on and off to narrow it down, but there was no difference... there is a huge problem with defrosting windshield, too, where the only remedy is rolling down windows, which is terrible in fog, rain, cold weather... the other issue i have is the area where the sideview mirrors are: it is so wide, it blocks an oncoming car (especially on passenger side), when trying to turn left. it makes it nearly impossible to see road, too, as many streets have medians and many do not. some have concrete bike curbs, and one must pull car further out than normal, just to avoid running into something. this is true for both right or left turns. if area is dark, it is a guessing game. this also makes it difficult to see deer in neighborhoods or freeways here in san antonio, much less objects that are three feet tall and below.

While driving 45 mph on straight highway going downhill under engine power with cruise control on and set at 45 mph transmission downshifts and upshifts abruptly and rpm increases and speed surges increases to 63 mph. going down same hill ar 45 mph without cruise control on next trip car coasts only to 50 mph. *tr

First of all, this is a brand new vehicle. i bought it 6 weeks ago and it has less than 3000k miles. the vehicle was in motion and it shut down/ stalled out. how can a new vehicle just loose power? the dashboard told me service the transmission. the emergency brake light came on and the check engine light came on. the jeep sat in the median of a 4 lane busy highway just running. it took an hour for roadside service to have a tow truck to come to me. my baby, puppy and i were just stranded in the middle of a bad storm. jeep knows of this. they don't care about their consumers. now my life is in danger with this piece of crap. crap that costs me $26k! the tow truck driver told me i was his 4th customer today with the same problem as the others who have this exact model. please do not buy! your life will be in jeopardy or at the hands of an unmerciful company. the dealership told me they didn't even want it back. i'm just stuck!

Tl* the contact rented a 2016 jeep cherokee. while in reverse and applying the brakes, the rented vehicle independently accelerated forward and crashed into another vehicle. the air bags did not deploy. a police report was filed and there were no injuries. the vehicle was able to be driven. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vin and failure mileage were not available. ....updated 08/29/16 *bf the consumer stated the vehicle slipped out of gear several times while attempting to park

The transmition shift hard and causes whip lash ahd sticks in gear, skips gears,it horrible etc..

The 2016 trailhawk version of the cherokee has a dangerous tendency when descending steep bureau of land management roads with grades of 8-12%. this model was supposedly designed to maintain control when going downhill on these types of grades. if you shift it into first gear in low range, it cannot hold the grade as the engine has inadequate compression to slow the car and the transmission will shift into 2nd even though the shifter is in first gear. the car will accelerate downhill a an extremely high rate and just before it hits the redline, it will shift into second gear, this causes the car to quickly accelerate until you apply the brakes to bring it under control. this will get someone seriously injured or killed. i submitted a review of this and other issues to jeep and they simply advised me to speak to a jeep dealer which i did. i explained this issue to them and they had no solution for this. because of this we sold the car in less than one year. we bought it in april of 2016 and traded it in this month.
