Recently reported STRUCTURE problems on 2000 Honda Accord

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 honda accord. while the vehicle was at an independent mechanic for routine maintenance, it was found that the front passenger side subframe was severely corroded. the air conditioning condensation line dripped fluid on top of the key suspension component, which caused the failure. the vehicle was deemed unsafe to drive. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was contacted. the dealer was not notified. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 62,000.

Right side sub-frame, rear beam, k frame is completely rusted through from a/c drain line installed to drain directly onto the subframe. this causes the steering to flex substantially and according to my mechanic could cause the car steering to fail catastrophically or could allow the motor and transmission to fall out of the car. anti-sway bar is completely broken away from the frame. found by mechanic checking my car to determine what was wrong with the steering and cornering.

I was driving on city when i heard metal noise from right front passenger side i had it check ed and i was told that the k frame-subframe had rusted and cracked only on passenger side right i checked online and found out that a lot of people had this problem due that the ac was dripping water on top of it it was a manufacture defect

Passenger side rear subframe rusted and broke off i heard a clunking sound when i was going down the street on the way to work i turned the corner and heard a loud clunk sound and got under my car and looked and the passenger side rear subframe is broke off

The passenger side subframe is badly compromised by rust (some holes). parts of the suspension and steering can be compromised is it fails while driving. the driver side is not badly rusted. honda has relocated the air conditioning drip tube in later years which might be the cause of the problem

4th july my wife was in a collision which resulted in her suffering memory loss, speech issues , stutter, a severe concussion and weeks and weeks on continued therapy to include physical therapy, speech therapy and continued care. the air bag didnt deploy . no reason with the damage sustained by the car it shouldn't have deployed. my three children where also in the car to include my 12yr old son in the front passenger. my child sustained minor bumps and bruises but as a result of failed equipment my wife nearly forgot who i was to include last last ten years of our lives amoungst other things , and could possibly have most her life. one of the doctor diagnosis is : concussion with loss of consciousness, subsequent encounter. (speech pathological treatment plan ongoing ) my wife is also unable to work and provide , and take care of my children in my absence. vehicle was in motion , speed 40-55mph ohio state route 68 in urbana, ohio. night time following july 4th fireworks.

Subframe rust-out of front engine cradle back beam on right (passenger) side, both behind and in front of the lower control arm. large hole in frame was noted during other repair work and matches numerous complaints and pictures of similar problems that can be found online. dealer says there is no recall or other corrective action from honda.

Passenger side engine cradle rusted out. sway bar bushing broke off while driving had to have the vehicle towed home vehicle mileage is 260514

The sub-frame on passenger's side of car has significant rust through, presumably due to a poorly placed air conditioner condensate drain, which drips water on the affected component. this is a serious design flaw. the top part of the components is mostly eaten away by rust. the part has not broken, yet, but it eventually will. the driver's side of the same component is unaffected. the remainder of the car is in good shape for its age.

After a long trip out west we noticed a noise in the front end, we had the car looked at and they said the sub frame on right side was rusted out. we consider ourselves lucky nothing happened on the trip. from ohio to south dakota.

Structural design flaw rapidly corrodes front subframe. vehicle failed state inspection after significant corrosion of passenger-side front subframe compromised structural integrity. localized corrosion occurring suddenly during hot summer months almost certainly related to faulty placement of air conditioning drain hose. mechanic recommended replacement of entire subframe, repair cost quoted at $1,700. vehicle deemed unsafe to drive pending this necessary structural repair. current vehicle mileage is 123,000.

Front sub-frame or engine cradle is rusted and broken. its very unusual in honda. my whole car was rust free except that part. there are lot of customers complaining about this issue.

Paint bubbles on the front roof near the windshield has resulted in windshield seal to disintegrate and leak water when it rains. can't run the car through carwash! expect the water leak to damage internal electronics in the near future.

My son was driving his 2000 honda accord going on to 270 north all of a sudden his hood came popping up smashing his windshield and he was lucky he was in the lane closest to the brim. he could not see and was lucky no one was in front or at the side of him. the police officer that arrived asked us if this was a 2000-2002 honda and my son said yes. he explained to us this is the 5th honda vehicle in a month that this same thing occurred. his daughters same car as my son did this a month ago. he recommended to me to email you and let you know. obviously this is an issue, and if this columbus ohio police officer has seen 5 i wonder what has been going on in other states. the police officers name is officer [xxx] phone number [xxx] police officer number [xxx]. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 honda accord. while driving at various speeds, the vehicle rattled, shook, and an abnormal sound emitted from the front passenger side without warning. after inspecting the vehicle, the contact discovered that the front passenger side subframe was fractured and rotted. the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 214,000.

Subframe rot caused from the ac drain line. my frame is completely rotted through and broken because of this. could've caused a crash.

Takata recall i bought this car with no air bag and also suspension is no good

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 honda accord. while driving 35 mph, the vehicle struck a pothole and heard an abnormal noise emit from under the passenger side of the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the passenger side subframe was corroded and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 185,000.

Subframe/cradle rusted through on the passenger side due to manufacturers routing of air conditioner condensation onto subframe. no damage/rust on drivers side where a/c does not drain. around $400 in parts and over $700 in work.

Just purchased a 2000 accord on sat 8-22-15. body looks great, runs shifts great, but when attempting oil change i realized passenger side front subframe is completely gone. yes, gone. it's missing @4 inches of metal which has obviously rusted away, with surrounding metal rusted. driver side looks perfect. same part, two different places, acting completely different.

Car failed inspection due to corroded subframe on right hand side front passenger area. seems to be a common problem, and potentially dangerous if component failed.

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 honda accord. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, an abnormal ticking noise emitted from the front passenger side of the engine. the contact discovered that the sub frame was rusted near the passenger side tire. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that sub frame was rusted. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 223,000.

The arm broke into on my car. the welding was bad. also the clear coat look awful, it was painted cheaply and , it a eye sore. i just want it fixed . i love my car, but should not have to deal with recalls.

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 honda accord. the contact stated that there was a water leak from the air conditioner condenser onto the passenger side of the front subframe. as a result, the subframe fractured on the passenger side. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. the mechanic stated that the subframe was rusted and fractured. the front subframe needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 220,000.

While driving around town heard clunk from passenger side front wheel. jacked up car, pulled wheel and found sub frame had rotted through. this is an extremely hazardous condition, as the car could have lost steering control and have been in/caused an accident. this is a 2000 accord and have searched the web and found many other accord vehicles ( 1999-2002) with the same condition. honda needs to step up and take care of their customers and replace the sub frames on the affected accord vehicles.

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 honda accord. while driving at 55 mph over a pothole, a loud noise emitted from the vehicle. upon further inspection, the contact noticed that the subframe was corroded. the vehicle was taken to a dealer. the technician diagnosed that the passenger side subframe needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 97,000.

While driving my 2000 honda accord it made loud banging noise. i took the car into the mechanic to discover that the sub-frame was rusted. after investigating, i come to find out that this is happening to alot of honda accords made in (1999-2002). (http://www.newsnet5.com/news/local-news/investigations/center-for-auto-safety-requesting-recall-of-1-5-million-honda-accords-for-rust-issue-in-sub-frame) further more, honda changed the design location of the drainage hose in 2003, and said it was unrelated to sub-frame rust. nhtsa needs to do something about this before some is killed because of honda failed engineering. the cost to replace the sub-frame is about $1300.00 + incidentals. *tr

Routine maintenance revealed shocking finding: the r/f corner of subframe is rusted through and breaking. dealer advises it should be replaced asap and that the car is dangerous and should not be driven. obviously it makes no sense to spend the $2,500+tax that the dealer proposes, as the car is barely worth that much. this is a design flaw in 1998-2002 hondas as the air conditioner drips right onto this part of the subframe. the incontrovertible evidence is the dozens of other complaints for subframe rust filed here with the nhtsa and elsewhere - all on the passenger side - as well as the fact that honda changed the design on the 2003 models. i don't know why the nhtsa is waiting to force a recall?? what if i hadn't gotten the maintenance for another few months?? what could have potentially happened?? could i have lost control of the car as the bottom partially fell out?? this is a serious injury, if not death, waiting to happen! what are you waiting for!??? as for honda, i will never buy another honda again. they offered minimal goodwill assistance, and, through the dealer, basically said, it's an old car, parts fail. disgusting the callousness and disregard for customer loyalty. this car is supposed to be worth approx $2,500 resale value given its mileage and condition otherwise. now it's a heap of metal. honda, i'll take my hard-earned money to your competitors. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 honda accord. the contact stated that the sub frame was rusted. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the air condition hose was leaking water onto sub frame causing it to rust. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 120,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 honda accord. the contact stated that while driving approximately 20 mph, there was an abnormal noise and the vehicle failed to steer properly. the vehicle was taken to the independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the front passenger's side sub-structure had become rusted and detached from the vehicle. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 200,000.

The car made a knocking sound and pulls to the right at 55 miles per hour. mechanic noticed the sub frame on the right front side of the vehicle was rusted out and stated it was unsafe to drive. entire front sub frame to be replaced. no evidence of rust on the rest of the sub frame or undercarriage.

A month and a half ago i took my 2000 honda accord for exhaust repair, the mechanic told me that the subframe that hold the car engine motor has completely rusted, i went ahead and to the car to honda motorcar dealer because of defective hood latch switch that made the factory car alarm system to go off non-stop, i living a nightmare. nway the dealer wanted and still want 400 to replace the hood latch switch, the dealer also said the same thing the mechanic had said earlier that the vehicle subframe is rusted and need to be replaced, they need almost 1200 dollars to do so. this a major structural component of the vehicle that can accident and death. i need to drive my car every day for work purposes. how comes there was no recall on this major structural component that holds the vehicle together. *tr

I had a schedule oil change and the technician informed me that my subframe was rusting away. he informed me that it was not safe to drive the car. the subframe should not be in this condition as a result of normal driving condition. i do have photo's of this part. *tr

I brought my car to a certified auto shop for routine maintenance and during the inspection the mechanic lifted the car and allowed me to take pictures of the rusted sub- frame on the passenger side. it is very clear that the air conditioning unit drains directly into sub-frame causing condensation along with a puddle of water sitting on the frame which caused a rusted hole in the sub-frame. the spout for the air conditioner should be extended to allow the water to go directly onto the ground. due the faulty design several honda owners will need to have their sub frame replace along with the bearing. this is a high safety risk while driving, the rusted frame could fall apart and potentially causing accident. *tr

I learned when i change my oil. i notice the subframe have fell off and rust out. i call the honda dealer and they sent me to v mail. *tr

I went in for a routine oil change and the mechanic found that the subframe was rusted out on the right passenger side. from what he said and what i have been reading, this is quite common. with how serious this is, i don't understand why honda does not recall vehicles for this issue. with the ac leaking right onto this spot and them fixing that defect after 2002, it is clearly their fault. it is potentially dangerous and an overall hassle for something that shouldn't happen, even in a 15 year old car. *tr

The subframe on the passenger side of the vehicle is rusted out. the rust is below the ac drain hose. the vehicle is unsafe to operate. the dealer gave me an estimate of $1600 for the repair. *tr

The ac rubber hose leaks water and drips on the sub frame causing the sub frame to rust out. the rust totally cracked the sub frame, which in turn, caused the suspension to the be loose. from what i have researched online, this has happened to hundred of consumers. my husband has made a video and has taken the steps to warn the consumers of a cars which were engineered so poorly, and could risk the lives of any one driving this model. i wonder who is in charge of safety for vehicles manufactured by honda--the complaints from hundreds of consumers regarding the same issue dated way back 2009, but it seemed that neither honda, nor the government did anything to address the issue. i hope you act, before people get killed due to this safety hazard. i will save this complaint and research honda cars 1999 thru 2002 and when someone dies from this mistake will make sure the world weighs in through social media. *tr

Drivers side door on 2000 honda accord coupe will not open from the inside or outside. door latch assembly inside drivers door has failed. very dangerous as occupant cannot exit from drivers side door in the event of an emergency. 68,158 miles on vehicle. *js

I took my car into the mechanic for two issues: a possible brake fluid leak, and a weak to almost nonfunctional a/c in the summer months. he told me that my front passenger seat subframe was completely rotted out due to rust (the rust was not mentioned whatsoever during the car's inspection only 6 months prior) and would have to be replaced because the car is unsafe to drive. checked online and it seems to be a widely prevalent issue with gen 6 accords (98 - 02). i've lived in a snowy city for the life of the car, but there is no appreciable rust anywhere else on the car. only in this one spot, which is directly under the a/c drain. honda changed the location of the a/c drain in 2003 (with their 7th gen accords), and this problem is not an issue on those cars. honda has said that it is just a coincidence, but they are better off putting out a recall and covering the cost of replacing these front passenger subframes than having to pay for a class action lawsuit once somebody is seriously injured or killed because of a rotting subframe. while i think that my weak a/c may be what caused the acceleration of this subframe rot, it is unacceptable that so many people have had this issue with the subframe and honda has made no attempts to reconcile the issue. ford did a recall on a 12 year old car when they discovered a design flaw. i am consulting lawyers at this time to determine if there is a potential for a class action lawsuit before there is a report of somebody dying due to this. *js

Front passenger side of subframe rotted. driver side is good. inspector said honda will not fix. this is inexcusable. when will nhtsa do something about this. should i call my congress man to get this problem to be known to the mass public. i cant believe that someone hasn't been killed with this blatantly obvious disregard for familes who use these cars, and not know the danger.reminds me of when i contacted the nhsta on my toyota tacoma frame rusting off the truck and having my daughter in the truck praying we could make it home. i ended up selling the truck for half the price of it to only hear a month later that toyota was at least willing to fix the problem. but to late for me and a lot of other owners. *tr

I noticed that during side wind or going over dips in highway the vehicle would wander and sway making steering quite difficult and so i had midas do a 4 wheel alignment which didn't help. the midas inspector told me that he wasn't able to guarantee the alignment, since he thought it had been wrecked and that the frame was out of kilter. however i researched online, and found that this was a typical design flaw on this year and model, where the a/c liquid discharge was right above the sub-frame and had rusted the rear cross member completely loose from the frame. since i am on social security-disability, i am unable to pay to replace part #50200-584-a00-rr beam. *tr

Took vehicle to mechanic to inspect wheel noise. inspection resulted in replacement of ball joint. inspection also revealed 80-85% rust-out of subframe on passenger side. no other undercarriage rust is evident and the vehicle is otherwise in excellent condition. this is the same area of the subframe which has been reported as a 'defect' due to factory placement of the a/c drain hose. this is a dangerous condition waiting to happen. *js

On my honda accord 2000, i can remove the ignition key without switching the transmission to 'park'. i parked my car, and left the transmission on 'drive'. the car rolled down the slope and crashed into another car parked few yards away. the description of the recall 05v02500 (ignition-park interlock) matches exactly my car characteristics and the problem i am having with the interlock system. i called honda and they said that the recall does not apply to my vin. *tr

Sub-frame rusting: upon recent inspection this vehicle was determined to have rusting through the sub-frame on the front passenger side resulting in failure to pass inspection due to being unsafe. cost to repair and replace the part and allow the vehicle to be safe to drive will be $1500.00. no other sign of rust anywhere else on the undercarriage of this vehicle. upon research into this serious and expensive defect we noted that there are significant numbers of accord vehicle owners who have experienced the identical flaw. additionally, our mechanic noted that the air conditioning weep hole drains directly onto this area of the vehicle contributing to the sub-frame rot. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 honda accord. the contact stated that upon inspection, it was found that the frame was rusted. the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where the failure was confirmed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted about the failure. the failure mileage and vin was not available.

During an oil change, my husband notice a crack in the rear beam of the front crossmember. upon further investigation, he identified that the subframe had rusted through from the top down where the air conditioner drain was. the replacement part cost $530 (regularly $720 from honda) and over $400 in labor to replace it. the part was completely rusted through, broken in several places, and would have eventually caused a steering problem, according to the mechanic who replaced the part. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 honda accord. the contact stated that upon inspection, it was found that the sub frame was rusted. the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic who stated that the failure was due to the ac draining valve. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted about the failure. the failure mileage was 170,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 honda accord. the contact stated that while driving 5 mph over a road bump, the front frame became fractured. the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic, who inspected the problem and stated that the water from the air conditioning hose leaked onto the frame and as a result, the frame had become severely rusted. the vehicle was not repaired. the current and failure mileage was 250,000.

I bought a honda accord with 162,000 miles on it and was told all it needed was brakes and rotors. when i was replacing the brakes and rotor on the front passenger side of the vehicle i inspected all other parts as well and that's when i noticed the big problem. the sub frame was rotted out. i did some research online and found that this is a common problem with this year and that honda recognizes this but fails to do anything about it. the air condition drain is positioned so that it is constantly dripping on to that part of the sub frame. this is a major safety issue and i was advised not to drive the vehicle until i had the part replaced. i researched the price and labor for the part : part: $600+ honda garage. labor: $500+ honda garage. honda needs to take responsibility for this as other honorable companies have. *tr
