We have classified the 9 complaints from 2000 Honda Accord about STRUCTURE into the following categories.
Heard some strange noises and took the car to a mechanic. they reported that the rear beam had rusted through on the passenger side and told me it was a design flaw common to that year accord. they noted that the same part on the driver's side was not rusted and attributed the passenger side problem to it's location beneath the drain for the air conditioning condenser. they also indicated that the car was unsafe to drive. *tr
State inspection found passenger side of front subframe has rusted through. no other rust is visible on frame. mechanic claims failure from rust may be due to ac drain routed onto frame at this location. another 2000 accord was in in the shop at the same time for repair of the same damage. *tr
I was pulling into the parking space after driving the vehicle for 45 mins (approx. 20 miles). when i was ready park the car and switch off the ignition, the car suddenly accelerated way too fast and hit the building in front. i was driving into the parking space at less than around 10 mph as i had to make 3 turns within 100 feet before coming into vacant parking space. my leg was also in the break pedal as i made those turns after getting into the private property from il rte 83. i can definitely confirm that my leg was not in gas pedal as my right leg was on the break pedal to make those turns and stop the car in the parking space. it all happened in the matter of few seconds and there was no time to react. the car came to halt only after hitting the building. both air bags deployed as soon as the car hit the building and there was heave smoke inside the car. it was really scary because by looking at the damage the speed at the time of accident looks to be around 50 mph. it was a relatively higher curb in front and the building was just 6 - 8 feet away from the curb, i was also driving into the parking space at less than 10 mph. i am really shocked to see this kind of unintended/sudden acceleration happen with honda accord cars which could prove to be fatal for the driver, passenger and pedestrian alike. *tr
My friend and i were driving to go buy some food during heavy traffic and i ended up hitting a pothole i was unable to avoid. after i hit the pothole my car started making a loud grinding sound whenever i turned the wheels. when i got home i checked underneath my car to see what was causing the awful sound and saw a piece of metal heavily rusted and sheared right through. i checked the other side to see if it was also rusted and broken but to my surprise there was barely any rust on it. i went onto the internet and found out that it was the sub-frame of my accord that broke and that i was one of many people this exact situation has happened to. i am extremely relieved that neither my friend or i were injured when this happened, and that it did not cause an accident during heavy traffic. the fact that honda has yet to even address this issue is truly ridiculous and the fact that they have not recalled such a major defect happening to many people is stunning. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2000 honda accord. the contact stated while having regular maintenance performed on his vehicle, the independent mechanic notified him that the subframe was corroded. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired and the vin was unknown. the failure and current mileage was 97,000.
During a routine maintenance visit at my dealership i was informed that the passenger side subframe of my 2000 honda accord with only 57,000 miles on it was rusted out and not safe to drive. the driver side was fine. i spent over $1,400 to have the car repaired only to see a report on the news that the problem was caused by a badly placed drain off for the air conditioning. i think the cars should be recalled to fix the problem and those who have had the subframe repaired already should be reimbursed. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2000 honda accord. the contact stated that he took the vehicle to the dealer for routine service when he was advised that the rear and front of the sub-frame was completely rusted and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and offered no assistance. the failure mileage was approximately 112,000. the current mileage was approximately 115,000. the vin was unavailable.
I would like to call to your attention abc's investigation into honda accords for dangerous rusted/rotted sub-frames. the center for auto safety in washington d.c. is calling on honda to issue a voluntary recall for one and one-half million 1998 through 2002 honda accords due to rust that is quietly eating away at a major structural component. the center for auto safety's executive director [xxx] said, "there's no question this is a safety concern. what you have are hundreds of thousands of owners driving the roads on a vehicle that may suffer catastrophic frame failure due to corrosion." [xxx] is calling on honda to notify owners to have their vehicles inspected. "sooner or later," said [xxx], "someone is going to be killed, there's going to be a big product liability lawsuit and honda very well may wind up paying more in litigation costs then in doing what they should be doing -- which is do a recall today." records abc news obtained from national highway transportation safety administration detail similar complaints, including sub-frames that were described as "unsafe, failed inspection and in dangerous condition." i believe that this dangerous situation needs to be brought to your attention. honda will just try to wait out the situation and hope that it will go away if it does not get pressure from nhtsa and owners across the nation. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Recently i heard a clunking sound coming from the front of the car. upon inspection the mechanic said that the sub frame on the passenger's side had rusted/rotted out and that the front suspension had come loose from the sub frame. he said that the car was unsafe to drive and that i needed to have it repaired immediately. i called sunnyside honda and spoke with the service manager regarding the problem. i said that i had looked on the internet and this was a honda design defect and that numerous individuals had reported the same problem. i asked if honda was willing to do anything to help with the repair because it was a design defect and that i had been a loyal honda customer for years. the service manager contacted hondas district service manager who replied that honda was not willing to cover any of the $2,000.00 cost of replacing the sub frame. i then followed up with american honda motor co., inc.'s main customer service department in california. i spoke with [xxx] and she put me on hold for a long time. when she returned she said that the district service manager had said honda was not going to do anything to help so the main customer service people were not able to do anything to help. a short time ago my grandson, a student at bowling green state university, purchased a 1998 honda accord for $4000.00. upon recent inspection of that car the sub frame has rusted/rotted out the same as my car and many other honda accords. i believe that honda should be responsible for recalling and repairing these unsafe automobiles before someone is injured or killed as a result of their design defect and that they will continue to be unwilling to do so as long as individuals have no power to make them take responsibility. i am asking that you make it a priority to investigate and issue a recall of all these automobiles with honda's design defect. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
On nov 12, 2011 i went to get my car inspected and the would not pass it because the front rear subframe is rotted. the driver side is in perfect condition ....the dealer says it will cost $1600.. i know it's old but it only has 72000 miles on it ....im hearing that allot of people are having this problem ...i am scared to drive it, and i don't want to put my grandchildren in the car....i don't want to sell it because i don't want anyone else to get hurt...honda should have a recall on this issue ... *tr
I took this honda accord dx (my2000) to the dealer for 120,000 maintenance in september 2011. they told me the front passenger side subframe rusted very badly. but the driver side subframe was normal with no rust. i thought underbody rust is normal for my car's age and did not pay much attention. but after one month, the front wheels began to make strange noise. i took it to an independent auto repair and they told me the subframe rusted through completely and began to crack. it is a safety hazard to continue to drive. they said it always happened on the passenger side on honda accord because the a/c condensation water drips down on this point. i am taking it to a dealer today to replace it. it will cost me $2000. *tr
Recently took a 2000 accord se to honda dealer for trade in. the dealership put the car on the hoist for inspection before determining a trade in price. one of the first places that the mechanic looked was at the frame and front suspension on the passenger's side. almost immediately it was found that over half the width of the front cross beam was wasted away, and was in danger of breaking off at any time. both the mechanic and salesman agreed, this was a problem they had seen many times on several different years of this model. the rotting of the beam was apparently caused by condensate dripping from the air conditioner drain, which was located directly above the beam. i was told that because it had been such a problem, the drains had been moved to a different location on the next generation. the estimate to have it repaired was $1300.00. other than that, the car was deemed to be in excellent re-sale condition. *tr
Dear nhtsa: i am writing about my 2000 honda accord coupe which had an accident on may 22nd, 2010. i was driving in dry conditions along i-85 north in jefferson county, georgia when the left rear tire suddenly blew out causing my car to flip and roll over. we do not know what caused the blowout. i lost consciousness briefly and my neck was severely broken. i had to have an operation and will be out of work for at least three months. my son was injured but not as severely as me, with many cuts on his face and ear. two other occupants received many bruises and cuts on arms, legs and faces. the car was a total loss. there are two issues that seem to point to defects in the car. the first is that the roof collapsed so much that it hit my head and almost killed me. the second issue is that none of the four air bags deployed. it seems to me that with so much damage to the car as it rolled over and crushed the roof, that the air bags should have deployed. i would appreciate your investigating this car to see if federal guidelines were violated. *tr

The paint and clear coat have chipped off. *tr
There are 2 recalls on my year, make & model that i am experiencing. however, honda claims my vin is not included in the recall. i find it very odd that i could be experiencing both of the recalls, but my car is excluded. i also have seen several complaints all over the internet about the clearcoat on '98-'02 honda's peeling. honda is not accepting responsibility for the defective clearcoat. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2000 honda accord. the contact stated that the paint on the vehicle was deteriorating down to the metal of the vehicle. the contact was concerned that the vehicle would become rusted. the dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failure, but denied any assistance with repairs to the vehicle. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 70,000 and the current mileage was 160,000.

I own a 200 honda accord that is causing me to bury my head in the sand. when my spouse and i went looking for a new car 3 years ago, i told him if he wanted a car that lasted long after the last payment to look at a honda. i am quite surprised at the problems we have encountered. this new one is: the driver's side window regulator needs replaced. car has 70k miles on it. i've talked to 2 friends who also own hondas-same exact problems. $350 to fix. there's got to be a defect somewhere. please help, we still have $$$ to pay on the car and although i have always wanted a honda, it's making me second-guess myself.*ak
