We have classified the 80 complaints from 2000 Honda Accord about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
Two years ago my dash lights would just suddenly go out and then come back on, my srs light stayed on as well. when i took it to the dealership they reset my srs light but told me nothing was wrong. last year my dashlight problem got worse and my srs light continues to go on and off constantly. took it back to the dealer and they told me i need a new drivers side multiplex unit and that nothing is wrong with my srs. i have a 2000 2dr v6 ex. i am not covered under this recall because i have a sunroof. *tr
My 2000 honda accord ex v6 battery finally died on 01/30/2006. a new battery was replaced the same day and now the srs light stays on and won't go away. i contacted a local honda dealership and they want to charge me $90 just for diagnostic and the cost of repair. i searched on the internet and realized that is a common problem with many honda and acura car models after any power related issue. as proclaimed reliable car company, i wanted to know why honda won't admit they have a problem and voluntarily have dealership fix it free of charge for the customers. i will be one of the customer gives serious thought on any future honda purchases. *jb
I have a 2000 honda accord se. it was single handedly driven since the vehicle was bought brand new in march 2000. i have been maintaining it per the specifications stipulated in the owner's manual, and getting it serviced from honda service centers only. i have been a victim of un-professional experience from honda's dealerships and american honda. a few months ago the engine check light came on. since it was time to get my major service done i took it to larry hopkins honda and specifically asked to check the engine light. they didn't check anything and said that everything seemed fine. since the light was still on i had to take the vehicle back another time to get it checked by paying a diagnostic fee of a $150 which i could have saved had they checked it the first time. they diagnosed it as a stuck thermostat, code p1486, and replaced it, charging me $241 mostly labor charge. after a week the engine check light came on again, and when i called larry hopkins i was informed that ecu needed replacement, costing $960, and that they could not assure me that it would fix the problem, even after spending more than $1250. recently, i contacted american honda and they advised me to get another diagnostics done at one of their dealerships before they could help me. i got the vehicle diagnosed, and after paying $129 the same code p1486 was found and was informed that ecu was indeed a wear and tear part. however. i disagreed, and have checked with various technicians who disagreed that ecu was a wear and tear item, and have never heard of an ecus going bad after a few years of usage. *ak
driving home at night in heavy rain with family when the srs light came on followed less than a minute later by the abs light. less than 1 minute later car died on the road. battery was so dead that starter would not even turnover. had to be towed home. it was determined the next day that the delphi alternator was putting out no voltage. it had blown open 4 of its 6 diodes in the rectifier assembly. behind the back cover of the alternator when opened up. car needed a new alternator at 68,000 miles. i was told by many that this was a very common problem with the '1998 to '2002 accord v6 models which used this delphi built alternator. complete alternator failure caused the srs and abs lights to come on due to a low voltage condition in the car's electrical system possibly rendering both of these important safety systems useless with the warning lights on. the battery light never came on. i replaced the alternator with a bosch unit as i did not want the problem to occur again. i called honda in ca to inform them of this problem on 1/18/06. i still have the defective oem alternator.*ak
Over the past few years, my honda accord experienced electrical problems in the instrument panel on the dashboard. the light would flicker off and on while driving during the night. eventually that flickering stopped and the whole interior light in the dashboard failed to illuminate. i took it in to a certified ase auto mechanic and he said there was a safety recall on this particular issue and to check my mail and files for any letters. i found a letter in my files dating back to july 2004 stating a safety recall on 2000-2001 accord lx v6 models for the multiplex control unit in the dashboard had to be replaced due to heat buildup and can cause accidents because the inside dashboard lights will not illuminate. i took the car to the fairfax honda dealer in virginia and they could not honor my recall because my vin# did not call for it. i contacted honda consumer affairs about my problem and they told me my car was listed as a honda accord lx 4-cylinder. i spoke to a rep. named andrea. after checking my files more thoroughly, they confirmed my car was a honda accord ex v6. the recall was for a lx v6, not a ex v6. the only difference is that the ex has a different trim then the lx, but the problem was the same, due to heat build up the instrument panel may not display lights. this is very dangerous for a driver and this problem needs to be addressed and resolved before someone gets injured. honda corporation should provide a workaround or take full responsibility of their defect. *nm
At 84,366 miles my car's check engine light came on. took accord to mechanic and was told the egr valve error code appeared. the mechanic said to take to honda due to recall for this part. picked car up from mechanic and car also had srs light on. researched online since i already have recall for dash light. found many other honda owners with same srs light. found out my air bags will not function if sensor illuminated. also, called honda and they said i was beyond the mileage (80k) for the extended warranty on the defective egr valve replacement. asked what honda was doing about the front airbags and was told no decision has been made. i have also discovered my car has the extended warranty for defective/faulty transmission. so when i'm driving down the highway my tranmsmission may give out at high rate of speed and if collsion occurs, my air bags will not deploy. my seat weld joint broke at 54k too! i used a 99 toyota 4runner as replacement vehicle and discovered the seatbelt warning light came on when my 40lb. dog sat in passenger front seat. my accord never has detected my dog in the front seat ever! this car is riddled with safety defects and poor manufacturing. honda should be held responsible for protecting the owners from injury including monetary repairs/ replacement costs for all of these safety defects and engine defects. *nm
Key can be removed while the gear indicator is in "d". if the car is parked on an incline, it can begin to roll once the brake is disengaged. there is a recall for the same year and model with this specific defect, but my accord's vin "does not qualify" for the recall. dealership offered to replace mechanism at my expense. *jb
My 2000 honda accord ex stalls and dies off while the car is in motion. i have experienced this for several times in the last month at 46000 miles. this is very dangerous while on the road without any warning. i've taken the car to the honda dealer to fix this problem they say that are not able to find the cause for this. however after reading many customer compliant on a web site i found that it is due to the malfunctioning of the ignition switch. the electrical contacts with in the ignition switch that wear prematurely causing the switch to malfunction thus stalling the vehicle. *nm
Dt: while the consumer husband was driving, the vehicle stopped with no warning. he was sitting in traffic and then pushed the vehicle to the side of the road. it was then towed to the dealership, and they found the alternator failed. the alternator was replaced. *ak updated 12/07/05. *jb
Dt: 2000 honda accord. the srs (safety restraint system) light came on and stayed on. the consumer contacted dealership, and they said it was probably a switch that was under a recall. the light told them it something to do with the electrical system. contacted my manufacturer, they said that vehicle was not recalled. srs light has been coming on for about a month and a half. consumer was concerned about his family's safety. *ak
My 2000 honda accord v-6 has approximately 85,000 miles on it and i have had very few problems. always took to dealer for maintenance/repair. i had the alternator replaced in june 2005, and within 2 weeks of getting the car back, the srs light came on. i called the dealer and they said i should bring the car in right away. i paid $68 to have the system "tested" and was told i needed to replace the entire computer system for the air bags at a cost of $575, or i could have them reset it and it may or may not come back on. i asked what happens when the light was on and was told that the airbags just won't work. i opted for the reset. now, 2 weeks later, the light is back on. i have done some internet research and have found that not only is this a known problem, but the "cures" that are suggested by the dealer are all over the map. i find it incredible that honda is not responsible for this defect in a mandated safety device. my family will hold honda responsible if i am injured or killed due to a non-inflating airbag. i do not believe the company is taking the airbag issue seriously. my daughter was thankfully not killed in a serious accident last june in her civic, whose airbags did not deploy when she was hit with such force that it tore the front engine housing off her car and resulted in a total loss. the honda folks told us then that sometimes the car isn't "hit the right way" and the sensors don't register that the airbags should deploy. i think the same government that requires these devices be installed on all cars (and the ones we pay for when purchasing the cars) should hold the car makers/dealers responsible for making sure they are operable. *nm
Tl*the contact owns a 2000 honda accord lx. the interior lights on the dashboard are not illuminated. the contact stated that the lights on the dashboard have malfunctioned since 2005, but now the lights have shut off entirely. the contact stated that the failure was identical to recall 04v256000. the current mileage was 300,000. the failure mileage was 100,000.
Consumer took the vehicle to the dealer to have ignition interlock repairs done. upon picking up the vehicle consumer was still able to remove the key from the ignition with the vehicle running. *ak
I drive a 2000 accord coupe lx 4 cyc. and some time my car would just lose power and die. once my car loose power i can no longer have control of the car. several times during a turn and with traffic behind me. lucky i was able to pull over to the side before any accident occurred. i took the car to the dealership many times, but each time they said nothing was wrong and there are no recalls on 2000 but only 98-99 accords. they said that they will be more then happy to look into the issue but at my expensive. i was outraged that nothing is being done to fix this issue. i think this is a serious problem that honda needs to fix before i myself and/or others get seriously injured. i have expressed my concerns to many dealerships but none of them are willing to find a fix. *jb
The seat belt, brake, door, emergency and srs lights were constantly burning at different times on the consumers 200 honda accord. *bf the dealer replaced the alternator. *jb
When the key was not in the ignition switch, the gear shifted from park. the dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. the cause was not determined. please provide more information. since purchase the key could be removed in any position of the transmission lever. *tc

I purchased a new 2000 honda accord v6 in june of 2000. it is now 4 1/2 years old and has fewer than 18,000 miles. about 1 week ago i started hearing a whine or whirr and took it to the dealer today (12/15/04). it checked out to be a bad alternator, and they said it would be over $500 to fix!! i found seven complaints on this site and all of them (including mine) share a defective air bag light which comes on intermittently. mine has been coming on since almost day 1. honda dealership told me back then it was due to some clothes or cushion blocking some sensor at the back of the seat and was nothing to worry about. i have had maintenance done every 3 months or so, the most recent of which was december 4, 2004. at that time, there was no whine, no engine warning lights, or any indication of anything wrong, but i was told i needed a new battery. i was surprised to hear that, but now i know why. it was a few days after that i began hearing the noise that was today diagnosed as a bad alternator. again, good maintenance record, fewer than 18000 miles, no warning lights, bad alternator. i am driving 300 miles this coming saturday and am scared to death--hoping that it is fixed completely and that nothing else goes wrong. i hope this gets some attention from nhtsa!. *ak
Purchased new 2000 accord ex v-6, 4 dr-replaced transmission at 10,000 miles, then again around 55,000 miles. now on third transmission and wondering how long this one will last. also, now the srs light is on and they say the seat belt has to replaced, as well as now the alternator and tensioner are being repalced ($600 job!). based on some other complaints, it seems the two are related, as well as the alternator problems being a result of the transmission problems.
While driving the key could be removed from this vehicle while it was in gear . consumer was told by the dealership that this vehicle was not included in recent honda ignition recall due to vin. *ak
The srs airbag light came on at approximately 69,000 mi.the car was taken to dealer and no fault codes were found on the computer. i had the delphi alternator load tested and determined that could be the culprit. during this time, i also had both of my headlamps burned out within weeks of each other. i replaced the alternator with an aftermarket one and have not had any problems since. *ak
Upon turning the vehicle off, the consumer was able to turn and remove the key while the vehicle was in drive. the vehicle started to roll forward without the key in the ignition. the consumer was out of the vehicle before she noticed the car was rolling. *jb
Various problems with 2000 honda accord. *mr the alternator failed, the egr valve failed, the srs light illuminated, the driver's seat back panel had fallen due to s defective plastic anchor pin, the a/c stopped working, and the front passenger door seal at the bottom was falling off. *sc *jb

I can remove the key from my 2000 accord while the gear shift is still in drive. i did this once thinking i had placed the car in park, and after exiting the car it began to roll backward. despite the fact there was a recall on 98 and 99 accords for this same problem, the folks at honda customer service told me i need to take my car to a honda dealer and pay to have it inspected. however, they didn't promise me they could do anything for me after the inspection.*ak
The consumer stated that when he removed the key from the ignition. he also stated that the vehicle does not have to be in park for this to occur. there is a recall on the 99 hondas for that same problem, but yet not on his vehicle. *nm consumer stated that the key can be removed when vehicle is not set in park. *la
When my 2000 honda accord ex v6 was about 2 years old, the light display on my audio tuner/cd went out. i thought someone just needed to change the display to get the light back on, but it turned out that the whole unit needed to be replaced. the dealer did replace it free, but not until i pushed them to see the technical service bulletins. today, about 2 years after the unit was replaced, i started my car to find that the light was on, but the audio unit was not producing any sound. i am calling the dealer today, but i am concerned because i have never had to replace a radio on a car at all, now i am going to replace it twice on a car that is 4 years old. some how i don't think this is going to be gratis.*ak
Consumer was able to remove the key from the ignition switch when the vehicle was not in park. dealer stated sorry, there was no recall on this vehicle. *ak *mr

Dashboard lighting is nonfunctioning for no known reason. dealer service recommends removal of entire instrument cluster for repair and /or replacement of bulbs and recalibration of odometer at a cost of over $500. vehicle has 20,000 miles and is beyond original warranty period.*ak
Delphi alternator failed. first noticed due to noise coming from alternator. with no dash warning lights on, voltage measured as low as ~8 volts, and engine then stalled completely when high beam lights were switched on. confirmed wiring good, removed discharged battery, recharged battery, battery condition load-tested good, and warning light finally came on only after running engine at idle and then ~3000rpm for ~5 minutes. voltage monitoring confirmed only battery voltage had been present long before warning light came on. alternator should not have failed this soon, but not having an immediate warning indication that charging system has failed is a very unsafe condition. (luckily the car stalled in my garage, not minutes before in middle of traffic.*ak
Concerning my 2000 honda accord ex, vin [xxx] the key can be removed from this vehicle while it is in gear but i was told by my dealer that this vin is not covered by the recent honda ignition recall. this really concerns me and i'm wondering whether this problem has been reported in the 2000 honda accord. this is a first off the line 2000 and i just don't understand how there can be a cut off like this. i do not know at what mileage this occurred because i have never attempted to remove the key unless the transmission was in park until yesterday after i heard about the recall.*ak information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
There was a recent recall of honda autos for malfunctioning ignition switch that allows removal of key while not in park. i have a 2000 accord se with that problem, but the 2000's were not included in the recall. it should be. thanks. *la
I have a 2000 honda accord vtec v6. i take good care of it, and all of a sudden all the air bag systems have shutdown indicated by the srs light. now i am starting to have electrical failures left and right. majority of my warning llights on, my console which include battery, all doors, trunk, and brake light lights are on. the transmission is starting to slip. i don't know if i got a bad honda from the batch, but just being 2 years old, it is experiencing some tough problems. i also have the extened honda plan upto 100,000 miles/6 yrs.. but of course the plan does not cover any of my problems. i don't have money to waste on the car that is nearly new, and i still owe 23000 on. please help.
Complaint received via e-mail." am the original owner of a 2000 honda accord se. in 9-25-03 i took the car to the dealership because i was able to remove my key from the ignition without the car in park. was told the switch inside the center console failed because soda was spilled. i would have to pay to replace it. i asked if it was a safety issue, and was told not to worry about it. if i wanted it fixed it would cost me about $200.00, and the part had to be ordered. took car home, inspected under the console, and found no evidence of soda or any other substance. on 6-12-04 the car seemed to be having poor acceleration home at 4 pm, and at 1130 pm police notified me that my car was found in neighbor's yard, had ran into the corner of the home, causing $3000 damage to home and $800.00 to front of car. on july 13 2004 check engine light came on. car had smoke coming from underneath, as well as transmission fluid leaking. had to have car towed to dealership. requested they check the ignition issue. also, next day i received a call, stating that transmission had to be replaced. i asked about the ignition issue, and was told that they forgot to look at it. i insisted it be looked at,and told them what happened the last time at another dealership. i was aware of a recall on the 1999 model, and that other people with same make & model had a similar problem. *ak

Summary:on the 2000 honda accord after having problems with the alternator the air bags would be useless in a crash unless honda services the vehicle and erases the failure code the computer is reporting. *ak i recently had the alternator in my 2000 accord ex v6 replaced because it was not working. after it was replaced the srs (air bag) light was on and would not turn off. i then went to the local honda service center and they told me that because the alternator was not powering the computer that controls the airbags with the correct voltage it triggered the failure light. i was then told that while the light is on the air bags are disabled and would not be deployed in the event of a crash. i then told the employee that this was the stupidest thing i have ever heard, and is there any way to reset the system. i was told the car would have to be serviced and hooked up to their computer system to reset the cars internal computer (at a cost of $89.00). i set up an appointment to have this done next week but got to thinking how this is truly a safety issue. the system should reset itself when everything is normal so the consumer does not have to drive around in a car with air bags that do not deploy in the event of a crash. to have the car disable this vital part of its safety features because the voltage dropped below a certain point makes no sense. i can see it detecting an error but then when everything is back to normal it should reset. now the car is working perfectly but because the computer detected that one error now the air bags will not work at all until honda resets it (and takes $89.00).
The vehicle experienced consistent problems with the check engine and the abs light. the short was replaced. the dealers replaced the gas tank sensor but the problem still occurred. *nlm (ex model) the dealer replaced several sensors and the next few months, the same problem occurred. the dealer replaced the sensor again. the problem with the check engine light occurred again in which the warranty expired but the dealer offered to replace the sensors again free of charge. *scc *jb
Tl*the contact owns a 2000 honda accord. while driving 45 mph, the srs indicator illuminated. the dealer stated that the failure was due to a faulty battery and cable. sears inspected the battery and found no failures. the dealer also stated that the failure was caused by a short in the board. no repairs were made. the vin, engine size, and number of cylinders were unknown. the current mileage is 79,500 and failure mileage was 75,000. updated 01/11/08. *lj the battery replacement didn't solve the problem. updated*jb

Dt: the tranmission will shift gears very losely and makes a clunking sound but only when it is in reverse. now it shifts slugishly. took dealer to the dealer twice and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. now they think it is the motor mounts. the first time this happened was in october of 2002. *ak dash board lighting goes blank. a faulty multiflex light unit was found. front brakes worn. check engine light was on. found faulty egr valve assembly and replaced. srs light is on. faulty opds unit was found. *tt
One month after my warranty expired i had two major problems. first my alternator was completely replaced as soon as i started getting some sound. the very next day i got a check engine indicator on. which resulted in some emission parts being ordered to be replaced today when i came out of the delaership my srs indicator started to display . i hope the airbags wont malfunction...

Car would not start and stalls while driving. i had to tow it to the dealer 5 times. first time, even though the car never started for me, it started at the dealer's place. second time, dealer adjusted base idle and car repeated same problem after couple of days.third time, dealer again adjusted base idle and car repeated same problem after couple of days.foruth time, dealer changed control module and car repeated same problem after couple of days. fifth time, dealer changed distributor, ignition coil, igniter unit and car repeated same problem after couple of days. now again the car is with the delaer for the same problem. as of date the problem is still happening. the car was purchased new. dt
Tl*the contact owns a 2000 honda accord. the contact exited the vehicle with the gear selector shifted into the "drive" position; and unexpectedly the ignition key released from the ignition. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the ignition switch interlock was replaced. the identical failure recurred six to eight years later and the ignition switch was replaced for the second time. the failure mileage was unknown.
The alternator went out on the car with approximately 55,000 miles which is way too soon. the check engine light came on a couple of weeks later and had to replace the egr valve (covered under warranty). the right headlamp has been replaced at least 5 times since owning the car. it has been checked for an electrical short and nothing could be found. the factory-installed cd player failed at approximately 37,000 miles. i have always heard good things about the honda, but i have not been too pleased with all the little nitpicking stuff. the original tires were replaced at the approximately 50000 mile mark. the new tires were dunlaps which failed within 8 months. hopefully the new ones will make it.*ak
