The transmission stop working while going up a hill
Driving my 2005 ford freestyle and all of a sudden, the vehicle starts to rev forward and backwards. i see the "engine fail safe mode appear and a lit up wrench also appears and the engine starts stalling or surging, followed by a sudden loss of power.
While reversing slowly from a parking spot and turning the wheel, the 2005 ford freestyle suddenly accelerated without application of the gas pedal. quickly pressing the brake did work to slow the car down. this is not the first time that this has happened since i bought the car last year.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. while driving approximately 25 mph, the all-wheel drive malfunction indicator illuminated. approximately two weeks later, the check transmission indicator also illuminated. the contact called an unknown local dealer, but the vehicle was not diagnosed. the failures were not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 161,000.
2005 ford freestyle has a constant scraping sound from the transmission when i am driving it. we paid $ 200.00 for ford mechanic to change out the transmission fluid with new fluid kit & he did find metal & brass shavings from tranny in oil pan. mechanic says the transmission needs to be replaced with new one but i can't afford to pay $4,000.00 it will take to do it. i found out the cvt transmissions all sooner or later ,but mostly sooner ; fail because they are notorious for it . bad design for that transmission & they still robbing the owners of these vehicles as i speak ! man up & pay for your mistakes like those in society must when they have robbed others and got caught. i'd like to know why it's let go thus far & who then is accountable ??
When pulling out of parking lot onto highway, lost all acceleration and check engine and check transmission lights came on, was lucky the vehicles behind me were paying attention and i was able to coast to side of road. turned car off and restarted, when shifting into gear there was a loud clunk in d and r, with still no response from the throttle. after having to have vehicle towed home so my family and i were off of the busy highway, i tried to disconnect the battery to try and reset the system, still no luck. we just had the throttle body replaced last year at a cost of 700.00, similar to same issues with throttle but nothing with transmission at that time. after reading through multiple reviews there are numerous complaints of this cvt transmission and there was also a recall on the throttle body needing to be cleaned. what is the problem of why a recall has not been issued, these vehicles are not only family vehicles but death traps! something needs to be done before some family gets killed from a faulty mistake that ford co. is well aware of!
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. while driving 2 mph, the vehicle lunged forward without warning. in addition, the air conditioner compressor stopped working. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was unknown.
Awd malfunction is present and it interferes with the stability control and abs. it sometimes causes abs not to get engaged.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. while driving various speeds, the vehicle shook violently. the vehicle failed to accelerate when the accelerator pedal was depressed in low or high gear. in addition, the contact stated that the third row seat mounting bracket was corroded. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign numbers: 12v006000 (power train) and 13v081000 (seats). the manufacturer was made aware of the failures. the failure mileage was approximately 149,000.
Cvt fail, throttle body issue, started in september 2016. car now has 135,030 miles. happens continuously, when idle and moving down the road. i sent a letter to ford and they responded with a "sorry...we can't help you". making helicopter noise. loses power and goes into failsafe mode. i will attach both letters. *tr
I just bought my vehicle and started noticing some issues with the car racing/idling fast. several times it would lung forward while driving and while foot was on brake almost hitting a car, then stalled & reduced speed and wouldn't accelerate. the wrench light came on. took it too oreillys and found it is the throttle and throttle sensor. this is a serious issue and dangerous. i want it fixed by ford asap!
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. when the vehicle was placed in reverse or drive, it would surge forward or backwards. on several occasions, when the accelerator pedal was depressed, the vehicle failed to respond. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 64,241.
Recently purchased my car through an independent dealer. started to accelerate when in park or when reversing. battery light comes on and goes off randomly. if i cut it off and turn it on it goes away. car jumps (accelerates) during driving. it does it all the time no matter where i am driving. run system diagnostic on steering wheel and everything comes back okay. purchased car for a family car and upset that this is a persistent problem with this model.
When driving down a 4 lane high way the car lost gas pedal check transmission light came on. this could have been fatal. with other vehicle speeds up to 65 mph behind my car... have had several garages look at it and still cant figure out the problem. now a tow bill labor and other compounding exspences.
There is a noise that is coming from the transmission. when in park or neutral the noise is prominent. i am finding out that this is a defective transmission as i have less than 80k miles to the car. ford has told me that the car is old what are you going to do. they did not mention how dangerous it was. or the fact that they new about these issues and has not made any attempt to rectify the issue with it;s customers who operate these vehicles with their families.
Driving on highway, heard loud pop (clap sound). then dash light came on and car steering wheel began to lock up. tried to flush transmission fluid and replace os sensor from ford and now it will not shift into first gear.
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 ford freestyle. while the gear shift was in the drive or reverse position, the engine revved without warning. the contact was informed that the power train control module needed to be updated, but the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 115,000. updated 08/30/16*lj *js
My vehicle enters engine failsafe mode in the middle of driving, experiences idle issues and the throttle body is responsible. i don't understand why there is not a recall present - when researching the issue you find many consumers with the same problem. i took my vehicle in to the dealership and they confirmed that it was the throttle body but that i would have to pay for repairs. my children have been put in serious danger due to the sudden engine shut off with no warning at various speeds including interstate driving. the engine failsafe happens while driving in town, while on the interstate, while accelerating, there is no warning or specific pattern.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. while driving 65 mph, the check engine warning light and an unknown warning light randomly flashed. in addition, the transmission slipped gears and the engine idled roughly. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was not available. updated 08/30/16*lj updated 09/07/16. *jb
While driving the vehicle on the highway the speed suddenly reduced and the vehicle would not accelerate my than ~40 mph. my daughter was able to exit the highway and park the vehicle in a nearby parking lot. once parked and the ignition was turned off the vehicle will no longer start. according to the local ford dealer the transmission must be replaced at a cost of $6,600.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. while driving approximately 45 mph, the vehicle failed to accelerate. the instrument panel illuminated intermittently. the failure recurred several times. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage and vin were unknown.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. while driving various speeds, the transmission exhibited severe hesitation in a jerking motion. the failure recurred on a separate occasion. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the transmission would need to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 140,000. the vin was unavailable.
I bought this suv 9-11-15 with the intent to go to my va appointments due to my medical conditions. the owner stated it had a few problems with the transmission, but i did not know that much about automobiles to understand what he was talking about. when i got ready to drive the car it would not change gears, just going forward but could go in reverse. i had it towed to a ford dealership 35 miles away from my home to diagnosis the problem. they stated it needed a throttle body to correct the problem, but it did not, and i had to pay for the repair which they stated it would idle down the car before they could diagnosis the correct problem. now they stating i have to replace the transmission in this vehicle for $6000. i do not have this much money to buy a transmission having to go back and forth to my appointments in sc and ga. why this vehicle has no recalls on powertrain, throttle body, etc which the dealership state they do not know exist and is charging all this money for repairs which do not work. i need some kind of a resolution in this matter with this vehicle. i hate to junk the vehicle because it is in pristine condition and great for my traveling to the doctors.
While traveling at 60 mph, the check engine and wrench light came on and the engine went into failsafe mode which is idle engine condition with no accelerator action. only steering and braking were available. this incident occurred on i-278 while traveling in the middle lane of four lanes and became an unsafe condition with no ability to safely pull over. i was able to maneuver radically to the shoulder while other drivers blew their horns with no knowledge of my plight. the engine was diagnosed with code 2012 and required the replacement of the throttle body which corrected the condition.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that when the accelerator pedal was applied, the vehicle did not pick up speed. the vehicle was taken to the dealer several times for various repairs and they were not able to replicate and diagnose the failure. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was not available.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. while driving at 15 mph, the vehicle would not accelerate when going up a hill. the vehicle also jerked violently and the check engine warning light illuminated. the failure recurred only when the vehicle was driven up a hill. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 148,255.
I purchased the 2005 ford freestyle used. issues: (1) shortly after purchasing the transmission light came on, then i took it to a transmission shop, who replaced the fluid, which seemed to fix the problem. (2) random surges of power, which almost resulted in a few accidents and was severely frightening (corrected before a recall) (3) this past winter problems with shutting the front doors, then with out warning ( with two children in the back sets ) the back passenger door few open when i turned the corner. the children screamed, i was thankful that a child was not severally injured and then, i had call someone to pick us up. i called ford and was told i was the only complaint! later at a children's recreation, i parked next to a woman with children driving the same model. i asked her if she experienced door issues, she stated both doors flew open with the children in the back seats, and stated her husband lubed the doors down. (4) now the transmission will randomly decide not to move, but if i turn the free style on and off it might go into gear. no transmission light on indicated an issue. my opinion is the 2005 ford freestyle was created to market toward families, the design and marketing worked, but as a result several families are now in danger. *tr
My 2005 freestyle has had the check engine light come on numerous time taken to dealership many time spent 2000 dollars in replacement parts and problem mn still happens when stop at traffic lights go to take off check engin light omes on and speed reduces started happing after 78000 miles dealership says cost to replace transmission is 8000 still paying on car tht sits in driveway
Stopped at a red light, when we went to take off, there was no reverse or forward. engine just revs when gas is pushed, no movement from vehicle. *tr
Vehicle lunges forward when driver's foot has the brake pressed while pulling into a parking space prior to shifting into park. *tr

Throttle body stuck closed, forcing limp home mode - stall in middle of highway, ford recall 12n03 did not work - after idling, there is a power surge which lunges vehicle forward while in drive at a stop sign, happened directly after service. *tr
Was traveling at approximately 40 mph when car suddenly jolted, as if it had struck something. after looking to insure nothing had been struck, we proceeded and the car made another odd noise and ceased to go forward. the transmission had blown and all fluids escaped. the car is ruined and from all i have read, this is a serious and extremely costly flaw costing consumers a small fortune and endangering lives on highways. *tr
For about a month now my car has been making this loud "helicopter" noise. we thought it was the alternator so i had that changed, thought it was the water pump and cooling fan, had that changed. the mechanic believes it's the torque converter within the transmission. after doing research i see this is a very very common and dangerous problem with the cvt transmission. thankfully my car has not lost power while driving but has gone into safe mode while attempting to drive. a few weeks ago i was trying to backup and i put the car in gear and it wouldn't move. i revved the engine but instead of revving up the rpm's went down...it had happened again twice last week. i turned off the car and let it sit for awhile and it started working again. i don't feel safe driving it and it feels like it could stop at any moment. i contacted ford today but they say it's nothing they can do being there is no recall and my car is no longer under warranty (i bought it used 4 years ago). i had the throttle body cleaned about a year ago because of the surging issues and had the motor mounts replaced a month ago. too many issues with the 2005-2007 models. i find it funny they stopped making them, then started again under the name taurus x with a different type of transmission. seems they know they messed up. i googled my issues and found a lawsuit plus many many many complaints of the same issue. something needs to be done as these transmissions are no longer being made and you run the risk of having the same issue if you "fix it" or rebuild it. not safe at all and ford needs to be held accountable! now i either have to fix it or save for a new car. we have 4 kids and need something safe. *tr
Own a 2005 ford freestyle, v6, 3.0, all wheel drive, limited edition. i started hearing loud grinding and knocking noises from the cvt transmission. the vehicle will start, and the rpms will increase and decrease uncontrollably. this is the reason the cvt transmission in these vehicles are going bad, malfunctioning, and breaking continuously. the rpms are delayed in the decreasing rpms process, which tells the computer to shift prematurely, or to quickly, causing any internal parts and external parts to be damaged. these vehicles are equipped with a computerized throttle positioning sensor that is attached to the actual throttle body. the computer is sending improper commands to the throttling position sensor, rpms, shifting delay and synchronized shifting sensors. this is putting too much of a load on the gears, bearings, clutches, and other parts pertaining to the functioning of the cvt transmission shifting and everyday use. ford motor company (as stamped on the vin and vehicle information sticker inside and on the driver side door jam of the vehicle) should have perfected and or recognized these issues during the manufacturing, testing, and or dino sessions. all vehicle designs are to be tested, diagnosed if any issues occur, and are to be fixed, redesigned, and replaced. ford should take recognition to the customers and dealers that own these vehicles. people are purchasing these vehicles without the knowledge of possible failure and technical difficulties of these units. these issues can cause the vehicles, especially the vehicles that are all wheel drive, to lock up, brake, break, accelerate uncontrollably, and cause wrecks, fender benders, or more severe injuries, and even the lives of people of this great nation. the united states government will need to take action immediately, before ford motor company vehicles kill, eliminate, and or decease people. *tr
Awd malfunction light started coming on occasionally last fall. it is now on all the time. talked to a mechanic and was told it was either a sensor or a wheel bearing. in the process of replacing the wheel bearing right now. *tr
Car was financed and purchased used from authorized ford dealer in 2007 @ approx. 64k miles. previous owner was registered as ford motor co., indiana. on 12 jun 2014, without warning, the continuously-variable transmission (cvt) first showed signs of a problem: failing to shift out of lower speed gear from a stop to higher gears during travel. problem was remedied temporarily by shifting from d to r and back to d while stopped. the problem recurred sporadically, but within last week frequency of problem has increased while awaiting service appointment. this morning, 13-aug-2014, transmission slipped and failed to engage in any forward gear while stopped at intersection, resulting in a complete loss of forward propulsion. problem remedied by shifting from d to r and back to d, with significant difficultly. service technician states that cvt failures in this make and model are common and recommends replacement of transmission with rebuilt (as transmission is no longer manufactured by ford). moreover, only ford can perform the repair/replacement. no warning lights were activated during any of these events. cost of repair will exceed value of car. $5800 or more versus $3600 trade-in or instant-cash offer price $1500. ac compressor failure and rebuild (including rear ac) in 2012 cost $875. *tr
The problem with this car and the throttle body has been going on for a while. i took the car to the ford dealer but they only cleaned the throttle body when it needed replacement. the last event was in august 1 when while i was driving the fail safe mode came up and the car suddenly lost the power and wouldn't run faster than probably 0.1 mile per hour. this was the second time this happened the first time i was with my kids in a major highway and the car suddenly stop running. thank god i had a chance to steer to the emergency lane. many people are having the same issue with the 2005-2007 freestyle, this is a super safety issue and nobody is doing anything about it. when my car stopped i could have been hit on the back with a worst outcome. i got a tow truck and they took the car to the ford dealer. those people are not helpful at all and treated me with a bad attitude. very expensive to change that's why ford is not getting involved and only offered to clean the part in the extended warranty, knowing that wouldn't fix the problem. ford should have a recall for the throttle body part before somebody gets killed in a very serious accident that this problem could cause. *tr
Cars runs fine when cold or early in the morning after few minutes wrench light gets on and transmission start to make noise when shifted and won't accelerate well, runs but engine stay at high rpms , if i turn it off for few seconds wrench light come off and runs fines but after few minutes running wrench light come on and the problem again . *tr
While driving on the highway the wrench light suddenly came on & my car was put in "safe mode" . this make my car stop. i almost slam another car. had engine light that came on read & was told the throttle body was stuck open. took it to local ford dealership where they changed the throttle body. when the wrench light comes on the car doesn't want to accelerate & goes into safe mode. i took the car to a ford dealer and was told the transmission has to be replaced but it was replaced few years ago. *tr
Check transmission light and check engine indicator came up wrench light lit up would not shift gears. *tr
Vehicle idling, vehicle put into reverse and instantly accelerated backwards, depressed brake and vehicle net into a safe fail mode. engine light and a wrench dashboard light came on. turned vehicle off and back on systems came up fine. put vehicle in drive and vehicle accelerated and lunged forward. engine light and wrench dashboard light came on and engine went into fail safe mode again. drove vehicle home in fail safe mode. vehicle was taken in for servicing september 08, 2010 for same issue, throttle body was replaced. *tr
The vehicle suddenly lunges forward when at a stop. vehicle lunges forward and stalls. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. while driving approximately 25 mph, the vehicle jerked without warning. the failure recurred multiple times. an independent mechanic stated that the transmission fluid needed to be changed and the transmission filter replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not notified. the approximate failure mileage was 105,000.
