We have classified the 267 complaints from 2009 Ford Escape about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
Highway speeds. wrench light comes on and vehicle loses all power/throttle response. pull off road, put vehicle in park, restart and computer seems to reset. had been 1-2 times per year over the last couple of years and struggled to diagnose problem. happened 8 times in 150 mile trip today.
I was driving my car to work in a busy intersection the car lost the ability to move but not the power car came to a stop shut off car and it started but was riding rough. this happened two more times on my way home . was almost rear ended. my brother who has been a certified mechanic for thirty yeas diagnosed the car and it said throttle body valve stuck open.i did not get hurt but if i had been on a highway or in faster traffic i could have. i think others should be warned. i have never received anything from monaco ford in glastonbury where i bought the car the and my address is the same as when i bought it new. my brother is replacing the part for me . *tr
When i was headed to drop my daughter off i was driving down a street that has speed bumps which i usually don't have any problems. until this morning (08/08/2019) when my power steering kicked off and i had to physically turn my wheel. i saw the their was a recall for 2009 ford escapes and i was wondering if mine was one of them.
During operation vehicle lost ability to accelerate, all other functions still existed. yellow service ranch appeared on dash had to pull over and put car in park, i don't was very rough turn engine off. after starting car back up all lights were gone, able to drive again. this has now occurred more than 20 times. we have replaced both oxygen sensors, the purge canister and the catalytic converter. still having the same issue. when this happens on large highways or a multilane interstate it becomes a very dangerous situation.
I was driving down the highway and suddenly no power was going to the wheels when i stepped on the gas pedal. the car proceeded to slowdown and once pulled over to the side of the road it wouldn't send any power to the front or back wheel but would rev the engine, even though i was in drive. i tried this in reverse as well but still nothing.
Vehicle stalls/shuts off randomly while in motion driving. this has happened several times while on side streets and on the highway. recently happened twice within 30 minutes. extremely dangerous.
While driving on freeway at 70mph, wrench light and check engine light came on and car suddenly slowed to 40mph. this happened twice in a week. the trouble code shows p2112. dealer says that my vin is not covered by the consumer satisfaction program 13n03, but i have experienced the same problem. dealer says etb must be replaced. i will have to pay for it.
Steering wheel started to shake when stopped, with brake pedal depressed. a few hundred miles later lost power steering.also transmission downshifts hard, also noticeable clunk when shifting from park to reverse.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. while driving approximately 40-45 mph, the transmission seized and the steering wheel seized to the right. the contact also stated that the transmission failed to shift correctly. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the transmission sensor and steering sensor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. lance cunningham ford (4101 east clinton highway, knoxville, tn 37912, (866) 591-3943) and the manufacturer were notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 98,000. *tt *tr
Was accelerating after coasting to slow down for a turn on city streets. engine stalled out and service, oil, and battery lights all illuminated on the panel. vehicle lost all power and had to coast to a stop. put it in park, turned off and restarted with no issue. this is the 5th time this has happened in the last 18 months, all in simliar scenarios where accelerating after coasting.
Electronic throttle body (etb) my 2009 ford escape will occasionally lurch/surge forward or stall out while i'm driving. i believe this is a problem that ford addressed with an extended warranty a few years ago but i was not aware of this. i believe this is a safety issue and ford should contact all owners!
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated that the speedometer, fuel gauge, and steering column seized while the vehicle was driven 45 mph. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the alternator was replaced. the contact also stated that the alternator warning indicator illuminated. the failure recurred. northgate ford (8940 colerain ave, cincinnati, oh) was contacted and diagnosed that the steering control module, instrument cluster module, and torque sensor software were reset. the manufacturer was contacted and stated that they would not offer any additional repairs, and the expense of the next failure would be at the owner's expense. the failure mileage was 156,000.
When i accelerate my wheel feels like it's slipping and grinding and when i apply the brakes hard they seem to not want to stop keeping my abs on i feel the grinding and brake issue coming from the front wheel. when i step on the gas the front wheel hops and doesn't get traction wants to constantly slip and when i stop in snow the brakes lock up in front and abs stays on for a bit might be gear drive or bearing it's getting bad. this happens when i have to give a lot of gas to go and the abs when i need to really stop. this started a couple months after i financed it through genthe chevrolet but i work many hours and it has to be fixed before i end up stranded or in an accident. when i first test drove it it was acting up i told the salesman dave teska he told me it was fixed but he must of doped it like the interior it looked new when i bought it now it has stain spots and looks dirty i found out it was a ford fabric problem and they can't do anything. i'll never buy another vehicle again from genthe.
2009 ford escape leaking oil in garage and got worse. leaking front drivers side. axel seal leaking and was changed. but leak continued. returned to garage and found out numerous complaints with manufacturing problem from 2008 till 2014. had to order and replace another new seal, bushings, half shaft axel. was told there was a possible fire if not fixed in time. this leaked while sitting in garage and got worse as driven.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. while driving approximately 70 mph on a highway, the vehicle drastically decelerated to below 40 mph. the contact stated that the accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle continued to lose power. the contact coasted off the road and restarted the vehicle. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage was 102,000.
While driving our vechile the wrench lights comes on , then we fill a jerk turn the car off an on. then it is okay for a little while then the same thing happens again, but the engine lights comes on as well. not safe to drive. unfair that it is only covered after so many miles. when you know you have a big problem in the beginning. we brought our car used with 51,000 milses. we tried to get it in the dearlship everytime the light came on. but nothing. what are we supposed to do now. the lights comes on while the car is moving.
Please see this clip on youtube that explains our issue. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucusqj3-evk my vehicle, without warning will lose power and the wrench light appears. same thing, mechanic has no clue. why can't ford figure this out. it's dangerous. my wife has stalled several times in traffic. what can be done? thank you! *tr
Wrench light keep coming on in motion
Wrench light illuminated on instrument cluster and vehicle went into "limp mode", and could not maintain speed above 20 mph. this occurred while driving at freeway speeds and was very concerning. i drove home in the right hand lane, with hazards on, along back roads to avoid interstate speeds. car actually dropped to less than 10 mph while driving up hill. took it to my dealer who confirmed that the throttle body was bad. they said that ford would not cover the costs, estimated at $400.
2009 ford escape. consumer writes in regards to bad throttle bodies. *ld the consumer stated throttle body failed at 62,338 miles and again 14 months later at 75,927. *js *js
While driving vehicle normally, all of the sudden without warning the wrench indicator warning light turns on, and there's immediate loss of power. motor begins to struggle, and there is no response when hitting the gas pedal. struggles to even make it to getting to the side of the road to avoid traffic accident. after turning off vehicle, waiting a couple of minutes, then restarting vehicle, it will drive normally again, & the wrench light is no longer there. however, this scenario keeps occurring. it started happening about once a week, then a couple of times a week, & then to several times in a single day.
My 2009 ford escape has difficulty getting enough momentum to accelerate on the highway, this is a daily struggle. yesterday i was trying to pass an 18-wheeler as it was drifting into my lane; as i eagerly pressed on the gas my car jumped and continued to coast at the same speed. earlier this month, i had to decelerate from 40 mph to a fairly abrupt stop and my car was unable to. i just had my brake pads replaced so i knew that wasn't the problem, my car jolted a total of 7 times before coming to a complete stop. i almost crashed into the car in front of me. every time i drive my car it sounds like its going to fall apart, the rattling coming from the suspension is constant. i get my ford escape checked up every month, because of all the problems i have. this car is a hazard to my safety, and i do not feel comfortable driving in this rolling plastic death trap. it's infuriating that the government claims a defective electronic throttle body to be not harmful enough to have a recall. i could have died from in both instances which i specified in this complaint, something needs to be done about this.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact attempted to start the vehicle however, the vehicle failed to operate. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the power train control module would need to be replaced. the vehicle would be serviced within a week when the part became available. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 36,000. the vin was unavailable. updated 02/19/16*lj
My ford escape electronic power steering has been acting erratically. it seems to work fine sometimes, but then turns off at other times. this makes it extremely hard to turn the vehicle.
Power steering has gone out have replace front inner bearing, transmission lines, keep up on all my maintained records since i bought the vehicle in sept 2014' and have all other maintain economic records.
Vehicle stalled and went into "limp-home" mode after accelerating from a stopped condition.("limp-home" mode is a mode programmed by ford engineers to only allow the vehicle to move forward under limited power, generally only 1-2 mph.) i later found out that this was due to a faulty electronic throttle body. the vehicle then stalled an additional two times about two weeks apart from the first incident. i was able to use my own obd ii code scanner to detect the error code p2111. i found out that this component was determined to be faulty and ford motor corporation issued an extended warranty coverage for this component. however, ford will only replace this part if they are able to document the error code themselves on their code scanner. the problem lies in the design of this vehicle in that it won't store this particular code. when the vehicle stalls, the only course of action is to turn off the ignition and turn it back on in hopes of resetting the trhottle body. this works but it cancels the error code. the driver is forced to employ this technique to continue their travel or faced with the option of waiting for ford to come and scan for the code themselves. if this happens after normal work hours, this of course is not an option. the fact that this error code erases itself in an attempt to get the vehicle moving again is a catch 22 situation and one that ford should correct. i was forced to purchase my own replacement throttle body since ford would not replace it.
Lost power while driving in the middle lane on rt. 17 south near ramsey nj. engine was still on but rpm`s was very erratic. wrench warning light came on the check engine light came on. issues with electronic throttle noted on web sites for ford escape models. updated 10/01/15*lj
Driving to work this morning at 70 mph in the far left lane, car again suddenly loses power, slows way down, no response when pushing on gas pedal and the wrench light was on again. turned on hazards and had to cross 4 lanes of heavy morning commuting traffic to get off the freeway. as i stopped the car, again it acted like it was going to stall out. put the car in park and turned off the motor. turned the car back on, which didn't fire up as usual, but it did restart. put the car in drive and drove to work without incident. i am scared to drive this car anymore! people on the freeway were not willing to slow down to let me over, the kept flying around me. i called two dealerships and explained what was happening and both said they would have to charge me to diagnose the problem regardless of the reported throttle body issues. they told me if the problem didn't happen when they test drove my car or if the code didn't come up that there was nothing they could do for me. i would just have to hope it wouldn't happen again!? *tr
Driving about 50mph when the car just stop accelerating. engine still running but no ability to move. a red wrench starts flashing when this happens. *tr
On the freeway pressed gas-car did not respond, stalling. put it in neutral, slowed, back to drive, rough shaking, hard to control. very scary! got off at the closest exit -car was not responding. 3 passengers. i bought this car 6 days prior-so very scary. *tr
Speed decelerated on interstate. could not increase speed. engine, sound system, lights and steering maintained operable. had to coast to outside lane and exit freeway. wrench lite came on and manual indicated throttle control. have seen numerous complaints about this issue. had been experiencing slow speed acceleration, bit never this. it was a true state of panic in 5pm rush hour traffic. *tr
Vehicles feels like its going to stall then accelerates. it has been recalibrated before but, two months later we are having the same problem. there is also a leak on the left side of the vehicle looks to be transmission oil. also, we can no longer open the tail gate. *tr
Making a turn, my car jerked and could not accelerate. we had to cruise to our destination which was close thank god. i called ford and they told me to bring it in. i told them i was unsure if it was drivable. he then told me he couldn't tell me what it was til i brought it in. then told me i could take it in today but won't get checked til monday. he got my name and number. we went to various auto places for opinions and solutions. we thought we figured it out but a few hours later it did it again. my husband went back to pep boys but was told they could not run diagnostics because the light was not on. i was looking online and noticed a compliant was made about this issue and went to the ford website and saw it under the recall under my vin. my husband called the dealership and talked to a manger asking why i was never notified. he explained its not really a recall but had an extended warranty if it meets the criteria. we explained that the first man never mentioned anything nor did he bother to look up my information to see if i had the recall. the manager apologized and said for me to take it in monday and he would handle my situation. i'm appalled that i was not notified. this is very dangerous, especially because i have my 2 year old daughter in the car with me most of the time. god forbid my car would have stalled on the highway and i would have caused an accident because my car lost power all of a sudden. i never got any notification from ford about the recall nor the warranty. i think this is very inconsiderate as people's lives are at stake. i pray that no accidents, injuries or deaths occurred because of ford's negligence. my vehicle fits the warranty criteria so i hope i won't be charged for repairs. i hope the manager keeps his word. the only money i have is for christmas. if i have to pay for repairs, i can't buy gifts for my family or my daughter. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated that the fuel cap warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician diagnosed that the fuel cap malfunctioned and the transmission developed a leak. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 125,000.
My throttle/powertrain light went on and i found that a recall had been placed and i was never contacted by ford with a recall letter. *tr
Was at a stop, started to go and the wrench light went on and the gas peddle did not work. *tr
I was driving down the road at 45mph and went to accelerate and when i pressed the gas- the engine felt like it was off- i still had electrical power. i was not able to give the car any gas at all. i coasted until i could pull off the road and when i stopped- the car was idling very rough. the "throttle control/ powertrain" light had come on. i turned off the car and sat for about 5 minutes. when i turned it back on, it idled rough for about 3-4 seconds and the light was still on. then it smoothed out and the light went off and i was able to drive it back to my house (about 1 mile). *tr
Car started to idle and couldn't give it any gas. it would stall. started back up and then the gas would not accelerate. trouble starting back up but would. this kept repeating. *tr
I had the recent steering recall done, never had an issue. was out of town and then started the car and the wrench light was on. i went to the ford dealership and they replaced the throttle body. in less than a week now when slowing down to make a turn the car has cutoff once and the next day had no pickup after making a turn. i do not know if its related to the past recalls on the throttle body or not. *tr
Throttle body assembly shorted out internally, scan had code p2112. engine had no power it stayed at idle while driving at 45 mph immediately slowed down to 2 mph. *tr
My vehicle stalled and came to a complete stop from normal driving speeds. it continued to drive at about 5mph and then the little green wrench light came on the instrument panel. when turned off and re-started, the car ran fine for the trip home. this problem continues to occur; sometimes it won't happen for a week or so, sometimes it happens multiple times a day. i believe it to be an issue with the throttle body but the ford dealership will not replace it under consumer satisfaction program 13n03 because the computer reads no error code. they, instead, suggest it might be an issue with the transmission... but these are not typical 'symptoms' for a transmission issue and several other owners have reported this exact problem when a faulty throttle body is present. i have contacted ford customer service and hope to have this issue resolved asap as it will happen regardless of whether i am going 10, 40, or 70mph and is incredibly dangerous! *tr
Escape went into limp mode 4 times within the past few months- currently has a field service action number for this problem 13n03, but ford has set such limits.... dealer must be able to duplicate the incident, but with this power loss - it happens when it happens. ford does not want to cover repair until that time. so, i have an escape the stalls... when and were it wants, currently car at the dealer.... never received letter from ford.... *tr
My vehicle lost all acceleration while driving at 40mph, the wrench light came on. pulled over and powered off vehicle and powered it back on (had slight trouble turning over) continued on my way, the vehicle ended up loosing acceleration three times while driving home, was on the busy highway doing 55mpg at one point when all acceleration was lost again. when i explained the problem to ford they didn't know what was the problem, they ended up replacing the throttle body, but why wasn't this a mandatory recall when accidents could have occurred from loss of acceleration. *tr
Check engine light came on as with the drive train light. had computer read. showing a p2119 code/throttle actuator control. note: vehicle was in ford dealer on 24 july 2014 due to recall issued on pcm. *tr
On july 31st, my car was at a stop light, a minute after i pressed on the gas pedal, my car stalled (a light wrench on the dashboard appeared) -it would move maybe 1 mph but i was unable to accelerate on the gas pedal. after a moment, the vehicle was shaking ...i turned off the vehicle and turned it back on, everything was fine, the light wrench disappeared. after 45 minutes later, on the road, the same thing happened again and i had to move to the shoulder to prevent any accidents from happening. made an appointment with carmax less than a week later (because that is where i purchased the car, had it for a year). i was advised to come back if the same incident occurred because nothing happened since july 31st and they didn't want me to waste my money if they did not see anything. since that appointment, the same incident happened numerous times during the week of august 3rd-9th. on aug 16th, the wrench light appeared along with the engine light, went to my local mechanic and he mentioned that the throttle body needed to be replaced. it was confirmed today (aug. 18th) when i went to an unscheduled appointment at carmax (even on my way there, the lights came back on) that the throttle body needed to be replaced. *tr
Throttle stopped working and service light came on. coasted to the side of the road, shut it off and started it up again. it worked for several miles before happening again. *js next day it happened several more times on the way to the dealer. the dealer changed the throttle position sensor at no charge. the first set of incidents happened with my 7 month old in the car, so it was scary and dangerous. it is my understanding that ford is aware of the problem with this year/model.
I have had my 2009 ford escape in the ford dealer 5 times for nhtsa # 10055321. this week will be 3 times in the last 3 weeks. i don't know how this is not a recall. ford themselves said it happens on like every escape.
The vehicle suddenly lost engine power, came nearly to a stop but continued to jump forward until i turned it off. i have been told the problem is the throttle body. *tr
Driving when suddenly check engine light flashed, battery light, and oil light all blinked after which engine was running but unable to accelerate. was able to pull off to side of road placed in park again tried to rev engine nothing happened. turned car off then turned back on and car ran as usual check engine light remains on taking to dealership tomorrow. *tr
Going to left turn lane. no response from accelerator. engine still running. switched of, then switched back on.car running again. got home, it switched of again.then same as 1st time. *tr
