Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2011 Ford Edge

I was driving my ford edge on route 303 in phoenix at about 60 miles per hour when the car suddenly started shaking and losing power. it allowed me to drive a very short distance until i was able to stop the car, in a turn lane with a tractor trailer on my tail ...very disconcerting! a yellow wrench light was showing along with some notice about my traction being off, i believe. after sitting a few minutes i was able to move it off the turn lane and into a fairly safe lane ahead. fortunately a policeman pulled up behind me and i shut off the engine and called aaa for a tow. 20 minutes later, i turned on the engine which now seemed fine so the policeman suggested that i pull forward into a safer area. after doing sotheby's car seemed fine again so i drove it to my daughter's house several miles away and cancelled the tow. i have been researching this issue on line since and this has happened to many edge owners who have feared for their lives when the same thing happened to them. some say cleaning or replacing the throttle plate seemed to work but others have found that the dealers insist nothing is wrong after testing it.... it seems to have happened too many times for nothing to be done.... i think a recall is in order so that the dealerships can find out what the problem is before someone loses their life, if that hasn't already accur. i have a 2011 ford edge.

Vehicle has 54,096 miles on it. power transfer unit failure and transmission failure. noticed a noise, took it in for repair before it got worse. this seems to be a known and common issue. very expensive repair with low miles.

The vehicle was stationary and attempting to accelerate away from a stop light. the vehicle would not move under its own power. the engine rpm would increase as well as the speedometer but no movement. the vehicle would also move with the vehicle in park. towed to shop where it was determined that the axle retainer clip had fallen off and the cv axle and it slid out of the the inner shaft and stripped the entry teeth and the end of the cv shaft. known problem on 2012-14 ford edge.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford edge. the contact stated that the vehicle jerked, lunged, and lost power. also, the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was towed by the insurance company to kayser ford lincoln (2303 w beltline hwy, madison, wi 53713, (608) 271-6000) where it was diagnosed that the pcm needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 85,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford edge. the contact stated that after stopping the vehicle, the vehicle failed to shut off while the shift into park error warning light illuminated. the contact stated that the vehicle failed to shift into park and the emergency brake was operated in order to park the vehicle. the contact called bob boyd ford dealer at 740-654-1122 where they informed the contact the price for a diagnostic test. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that there was no recall. the approximate failure mileage was 160,000. the vin was not available.

I was driving the car in traffic, then it all of a sudden cut off, i able to restart and move a short distance to have it towed to the ford dealership service department. was told by dealership need complete power train replacement, water pump, possibly entire new engine.

Engine suddenly lost power and accelerator did not function. needed a new throttle body motor assembly. ford established "customer satisfaction program" in lieu of a recall for othjer ford models but the edge was not included in such.

Throttle body suspected: 2011 ford 3.5l edge decelerating and stalling at random. vehicle stranded in middle of roadway until pushed to side of the road. turning vehicle off then back on corrects issue until the next random event. this has happened 4 times with this vehicle.

Driving in middle lane on highway during rush hour and suddenly lost acceleration. thankfully i was able to avoid being rear ended and coast to shoulder of highway. after turning the car on anf off a couple of times, the car responded when i pushed accelerator. i was able to drive a 1/10 of a mile to a lincoln dealer and leave my car there. after googling the issue, i see many people have had this issue with fords, some have been recalled, some have had warranties extended to fix..(even a class action law suit exists!) but, i received no notification from ford that this could be an issue. i also discovered that quite a few people say they were in accidents due to this issue.this is extremely dangerous and i narrowly escaped causing a multi car accident!! ford needs to be forced to fix this issue immediately and to notify all those in danger before someone gets killed!!

Shift to park warning indicator keeps coming on when the vehicle is already in park and the vehicle is shutoff. this causes the whole cluster to light up and will eventually run the battery down leaving a person stranded. ford is aware of this issue as it occurs on several models. they need to recall this defect in the shifter assembly.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford edge. while driving various speeds, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was able to restart and was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the transfer case seized. the vehicle had not been repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 130,412.

Driving on the highway and i the yellow wrench light came on and i lost power. the vehicle wouldn't accelerate and felt very under powered. thankfully i was able to pull over turn the vehicle off and restart it. after restarting the problem seemed to go away. this is a very dangerous scenario. hopefully ford makes it right and has a recall for this common problem. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford edge. while turning the vehicle with the accelerator pedal depressed, the vehicle stalled and the check engine and power train warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was able to restart on the second attempt, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to two different dealers, but they were unable to duplicate the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 90,000.

2011 ford edge lost all power from the throttle while traveling on the interstate. pulled over to the side of the road, had a yellow wrench light, no throttle response and rough running engine. shut the vehicle off waited about 2 minutes and restarted everything was running fine. drove the edge about 10 miles on the interstate to my exit, after coming to a stop and ready to accelerate onto the highway i hit the gas and got out into the intersection and the yellow wrench light illuminated again and lost all power leaving me stranded in the middle of the intersection with traffic coming both ways. after traffic stopped and i was able to slowly move to the shoulder i shut the car down again and called a friend to come help me. after sitting for 10-20 minutes, my friend showed up and the edge restarts and was able to drive home. thankful my parents weren't driving or children weren't in the car and no accident was caused. after doing some research i've come to the conclusion that the throttle body is to blame and all the symptoms are the same. apparently this is a common problem on the edge, mustang, flex, explorer and lincoln mkx. very disappointed and dangerous! great vehicle but poor quality of electronic parts i hope and pray this never happens to someone who panics while on the interstate. vehicle will not be drove until this issue is fixed. date of incident october 9th, 2015 approximately 7:45 and 8:00-8:15. mileage approximately 105,xxx.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford edge. while driving 55 mph, the vehicle lost power. the vehicle failed to accelerate when the accelerator pedal was depressed. the power train fault warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 32,500. the vin was not available.

Alert stating "awd off" and an image of a wrench suddenly came on while driving. car sputtered and was unable to accelerate. pulled over, turned car off and waited a few minutes. when turned back on, alert was off. luckily i was on a residential street, but could pose a dangerous situation if on the highway or during traffic due to inability to accelerate or drive car.

Car driving at any speed will abruptly show yellow wrench, lose power and acceleration, steering becomes heavy and you have to fight to get the now shaking car to side of road. after switching off ignition, waiting ten seconds, it restarts and runs perfectly for another few weeks. dealership cannot replicate issue. my research points in throttle body assembly issue. has happened about 12 times in 18 months. each of differing terror and danger, but no-one can help, despite others online having same issue.

During acceleration the car shakes, loses acceleration and cuts out. it has happened 4 times this week (in traffic) to the point where i had to kick on the hazards really quick and find my way to safety. once it is cut off, put in park and restarted it acts like nothing was ever wrong. the only light that comes on it the yellow wrench on the dash with no other warnings or information.

1.a wrench shaped light came on from instrument panel, and having a sudden loss of power while driving. 2.the accelerator stops working or has extremely limited power. 3.after power off the vehicle and wait for 10-15 minutes to restart the vehicle, the wrench shaped light goes away and the vehicle in drivable condition again. but the problem could happen again within a day or in few days. it is really dangerous while during in highway or in busy roads when this problem occurred. the problem happens randomly. sometimes it could happen several times in a day, sometimes it won't happen in a week. i called ford dealers and they said to diagnostic it for $98 and only when the symptom happens they will be able to find the real cause. i searched online and it's a very common problem to 2010 -2013 ford edge owners.

Eight times within the past 60 days we have been driving our car and with no warning it slows and will not pick up speed until we turn the ignition off and turn it back on a wrench appears in the dashboard, we haven't had any accidents but we are afraid to dive the car on the interstate its just a matter of time before we are in the wrong place at the wrong time and this happens. *tr

I purchased the certified used edge in october of 2013. i have a major problem with the vehicle it has lost all power on me twice in the last month. once while sitting idle and just tonight while driving 65 mph on the highway. the wrench light came on and i had just enough time to put my hazard lights on to alert the vehicle approaching my vehicle. it took several minutes for me to get to the side of the highway as i was in the middle lane. i called for aaa to have the vehicle towed home. while waiting i turned the vehicle off. just as the tow truck arrived i turned the vehicle back on and the wrench symbol was gone. i do not feel safe driving this vehicle so i still had it towed. i will be taking it to the shop on monday morning. hopefully they can find and fix the issue. this seems to be a very dangerous issue. i could have been rear ended or killed in a horrible accident. i have been searching online to see if this is a common problem and it seems as if many ford edge owners have experienced this problem. then i checked for a recall and cannot seem to find one. i would hate for someone to be seriously injured before this problem is solved or dealt with by ford motors.

Had loss of power while driving 55 mph with no warning. wrench light on dash comes on and car slows to approximately 10mph. accelerator had no response, brakes and steering still worked.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford edge. the contact stated that after having maintenance performed, the transmission failed to shift without warning. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. the technician diagnosed that the pressure plate cracked and as a result, the transmission needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 24,950.

While driving down the highway, my 2011 ford edge lost all acceleration and the awd warning light came on with the lighted symbol of a wrench. i was almost rear ended by several cars before i could make it side of road. i had to shut vehicle completely down and restart. this problem continued for several more times. ford needs to address this problem before several people get killed.

When i place the car in park, the p in the dashboard does not turn red and i get an error message in the dash that the car is not in park. if you are unable to get the gear shift to show the p in red, it runs your battery down. this is a common issue with the ford edge; however, the only ones covered to be fixed by the dealer are 2012 thru 2016. why was the 2011 ford edge not included in the correction required of ford dealers? will it be added to the list soon?

My trct cntrl light had come on a few months ago, i had not gotten it fixed yet and as i was driving home the wrench light came on, i could not accelerate and my car stopped. i took it in, and as told it was a bad fuse. a few months later i was driving on the highway, hit a small puddle the wrench light came back on and i stalled in the fast lane on the highway. luckily i was not hit but i could of been seriously injured. this is becoming a huge problem!

Driver door ajar light stays on even when the door is clearly closed. the car will not stay locked; i press the door lock and the doors lock and then immediately unlock so i cannot have my car doors locked while i am driving. this is a constant problem; it is not intermittent. i am very disappointed in this car. i have had to have the throttle body replaced at a cost of $500.00, i have had a brake booster failure which had to be fixed, and now this problem which i read is a costly fix. this is my first ford vehicle; what is the problem?

The engine died, as i was driving the car down the interstate. the steering wheel locked as i tried to exit and my car drifted into oncoming traffic. fortunately there was no accident but when i was finally able to get the car to the side of the road it was severely smoking and i had to get myself and my daughter out of the car immediately. also, the head gaskets and radiator blew and now there is a major electrical problem with the car the service department could not diagnose after 5 hours of investigating.

(on multiple occasions )my 2011 ford edge upon accleration the vehicle loses the abiltiy to acclerate - shudders and the check engine flashes or stays on. supposedly could not find the "code" that caused it. i have had the vehicle into 2 different dealer ships - one replaced the transfer case, the other the catalytic converter and ignition coils- to the cost of over 600.00 on a used certified vehicle. less than a few days later same issue - back to dealer said it was a loose wire. i now drive the vehicle very tentatively and hope i don't have to accelerate quickly.the vehicle persists in the ability to not acclerate quickly ( usually at 55 mph or higher )without the engine light flashing or staying on. it also seems to happen most frequently on quick accleration --on ramp or getting up to freeway speed . it is very dangerous as this usually happens getting on or off the freeway or staying up with traffic, once the light goes on the vehicle shudders and will not accelerate today it will be 3 months first visit was oct 29 mileage was 68000 and has happened up to today multiple times and mileage is now 74000 the check engine light is on again back to ford dealer again tomorrow.

While driving the powertrain error code (wrench icon) pops up and my cars loses all acceleration. i'm forced to try to get to the shoulder of the road while coasting and then once stopped if i take my key out and reinsert and start the car everything is fine. ford dealer cannot find any errors with the vehicle and this has happened multiple times. this is a major safety concern to unexpectedly lose all engine power while at high speed on freeways or even side roads without a shoulder. there are lots of people with the same issue posting the same problems.

Vehicle losses all throttle control vehicle does not shut off but the wrench light comes on the dash and has no throttle response. i have to turn vehicle off then restart to reset the computer. every thing works great for a couple days then it does it again. i have had this happen in the middle of a intersection, on i 95 , i 64, i 264, coming close to being hit on passenger side in a intersection with my grand baby in the vehicle. i have had the vehicle in the dealership here in norfolk virginia. they charge me 125.00 and said they could not duplicate the problem. the dealer also stated they think it might be a throttle body. i told them to put one on it and they told me that they don't just replace parts. i picked it up from the dealership and 2 days later it did this again. you could be doing 60, 65. or 25 when it decides to lose throttle control. in the middle of a intersection turning or going 60 mph on the interstate it don't matter. i feel this is a safety concern and needs to be addressed. you can read about people with the same problem on the internet.

Vehicle failed nj state inspection twice for "not ready" conditions. there's a known issue recall 13e04 - pcm configuration error with computer issue dtc p160a reoccurring and our vin is not covered under this first recall although every issue is the same as vin specific recalls

While driving the car will suddenly lose power ( not accelerate ). the wrench light will come on. you must try to safely coast to side of road and turn ignition off and restart. this happens intermittently and is very dangerous in heavy traffic and at higher speeds. this has occurred on interstate highway and city driving. dangerous also when there is not enough room to pull off road safely. we have taken car to ford dealership but they cannot find problem. we have noted on the internet that a lot of other ford edge drivers are also having this issue. i would think that ford motor company would be aware of this problem. i would hope that this issue will be addressed before someone is seriously injured or killed. this has happened 6 times from 11/30/2015. it also happened over a year ago 4-5 times and ford could not find problem. thank you *tr

Transmission will not shift into park. dealership employee told me that this happens so often in ford edge and explorer that they have to keep the affected parts in stock constantly. this is clearly a safety defect and could result in serious consequences because the car would be left in gear without the transmission being locked. ford motor company should correct this problem immediately before serious injury or death results.

My husband and i were driving home (going approximately 40 mph) with our 2 year old and all of the sudden the car lost power. it did not die but wouldn't go over 5 mph. thankfully, we were close to home and not on a busy highway. if we had been on a busy highway i do believe it would have cause an accident and that terrifies me since this is our primary family vehicle. i have read that ford extended the warranty for this issue but was not made to issue a recall. unfortunately, ford inc's "customer satisfaction program" for this issue expired in january 2015 so now i will be out the money to fix this extremely dangerous issue. ford motor company should be made to issue a recall to fix this issue before it kills someone.

This is the second report i have made about this issue. the first was on/about set. 26, 2015. when i was driving, the car in motion, the power train malfunction indicator (a wrench) comes on, the car loses all power, goes down to perhaps 2 miles per hour, and then stops. it feels as though the power steering also goes out. when the car stops, it shakes and jerks. you cannot accelerate. i turn the motor off and then on, "resetting" the indicator (per the ford dealership). and the issue stops. it has happened again today, oct. 23rd. twice (in the morning and again this afternoon). i called sam galloway ford in fort myers, fl and was told to bring it in on nov. 4th. again, today is oct. 23. i was told, by danielle (service advisor), that "since it is not happening all the time it was fine to wait" until nov. 4, 2015. i am afraid to drive this car this is a safety issue for me, anyone i have in the car, and other drivers. are you going to wait until someone gets killed because of this issue? i am on busy roads when this happens. why don't you do something????

Wrench warning light, then lost acceleration, car stopped. driving on highway when this occurred.

On a friday afternoon in busy, fast moving highway traffic, i began a lane change to turn right off of the highway onto a neighborhood street. my car jolted then abruptly lost all acceleration. i did have electrical power and power steering, but no speed. i was able to creep along at snail pace staying to the far right. i put on my flashers, and fortunately all traffic behind me could safely manuever around to pass me. i was quite scared by the sudden onset of this problem, the loss of control and the fact that the instrument panel only gave me "wrench" symbol and no instructions or descriptions that were helpful. once i turned the car off and turned it on again, the symbol light was gone and my car drove normally. at no time prior to this event did my instrument panel denote any issue with my power train. once i had this failure, i took the vehicle to my dealer, maxwell ford in austin, and they informed me this is an event that they have seen before. i am reporting it to you because i feel this was a very threatening situation. losing all ability to accelerate put me at risk of being hit from behind. i was lucky to be going off the highway to the right...a left turn would have been fatal in this circumstance, as there was no way to accelerate and clear myself from oncoming traffic. this issue should be addressed by ford before someone gets killed.

I was driving at 35 mph when my car jerked and lost all power. i had to coast off the road without any steering capability. a wrench symbol appeared indicating a problem with the awd or power train. i had the car towed to my mechanic who could not find a problem and my car stored no codes for diagnostics.

Vehicle completely lost power while driving 45 mph on busy 4 lane road with no shoulder. yellow wrench lit up on dash and car completely and immediately shut down leaving me without the ability to steer and safely remove the vehicle off of the road (i was almost rear-ended and a car had to swerve to keep from hitting me). this happened twice in 8 hours. car has been maintained, had fuel, new battery, etc. with no other warnings or indicators. this issue is very dangerous!

I was driving, at 40 miles per hour, on a city street. the yellow/gold indicator (a wrench) appeared. the car immediately lost power, going from 40 to 20 miles per hour. this happened in less than one minute. i pulled on to a side street, turned off the engine, and checked to owner's manual. it said :power train malfunction". the instructions said to stop driving and call roadside assistance. i did this. i called ford roadside assistance and then called the dealership. i wanted to know if it was safe to turn on the car's air conditioning. i was told, "yes" this is safe. the tow arrived 65 minutes later and took the car directly to the dealership. after three days of going over the car, driving it, contacting ford, the (ford) dealership could not find the problem. i was told to drive the car and if this happened again, to bring the car directly to the dealership, and do not turn off the engine. how am i to drive the car when the car is in this condition? how can i drive on a city highway or an interstate, where the speed is high and have this happen again? how can i safely drive my grandchildren in this car? i called ford, but of course they didn't know anything. i want the ceo mark fields and the executive chairman, william clay ford, jr. to tell me: 1. would you feel safe in this car; 2. how can you employee so many engineers (product development, etc.) and not have solved this problem?

While driving at highway speeds, a "awd off" message appears in the message center, accompanied by a wrench icon indicating a powertrain malfunction. the engine speed drops to a rough idle which is not affected by the accelerator pedal. the car then coasts to a stop. there is no loss of power steering or power brakes. turning off and restarting the vehicle clears the error and makes the car operable again. this issue occurred on 9/11/2015 & 9/14/2015

When driving the car, it just periodically lost acceleration ability. i was driving about 35-40 mph when it happened the first time. i then coasted into a parking lot off the road and shut off the car for a few minutes. at that time the wrench symbol came on the display referring me to my manual for further information, which told me that it was a powertrain problem and to contact a dealer for service. it then started fine and i was able to drive it for some time. the next day the same thing happened. i then had a few days of normal driving, and then it happened again but this time it seemed to just decelerate more rapidly (unable to coast to a stop), it just stopped but was still running. i then shut it off and then started it back up and drove it home where i left it until being able to get into a shop for service which was a week later. at the time of this problem, the powertrain warranty was available until june, 2016 or 60,000 miles. at this time the car had approximately 51,700 miles on it. ultimately the problem was diagnosed as a bad throttle body which was not covered under the powertrain warranty and the cost of repair was $548.14 at a local ford dealership. this appears to be the same problem that the 2011 ford escapes had for which the warranty was extended.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford edge. while driving 35 mph, the vehicle lost power. in addition, the accelerator pedal was depressed but the vehicle failed to accelerate and the service vehicle soon warning light illuminated. the failure recurred on numerous occasions. the vehicle was taken to a dealer who was unable to diagnose or repair the vehicle. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 65,000. the vin was unavailable.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford edge. while driving at approximately 35 mph, the power train warning light illuminated and the awd off message appeared. the engine then began to sputter and stalled. the contact maneuvered off the road and was able to restart the engine. the vehicle was towed to the dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 50,000.

Driving aprox. 40 mph wrench light comes on, call dealership to see what would cause it. they say to keep driving until the check engine light comes on and then bring it into be checked (100.00). check engine light came on 3 days later, i had a little computer it read code p0744, torque converter clutch circuit intermittent, generic code for power train problem. took it to ford dealership they said their computer was reading that code as well as needing a new pcm (powertrain control module). this is costing aprox. $655.00 and they are not sure if that is the only thing it needs, once this is fixed the computer could read something else. the dealership also gave us a printout stating this is a common and known problem with the ford edge 2011-2012. called ford corp. they were not very helpful other than suggesting filing a complaint. we were told this problem could shut the car down completely while driving, it makes me a little scared to drive it, i don't need it breaking down with my child in the car. not happy with paying $100.00 to be told it's going to cost another $650.00 and it may not even fix the problem.

About 2-3 weeks ago, while driving in the outer banks, nc, i had a sudden loss of power in the vehicle and an yellow wrench sign came. luckily, i was able to pull off the road and shut the car off. once restarted, it worked ok. i went to cavalier ford dealer at portsmouth, va and they could not find anything wrong. since there was no recall or mention of this problem from ford, i was told not to worry about it. today, while driving with my wife and daughter, i had complete loss of power with the yellow wrench sign again. i had to pull on the wrong side of the road with hazard lights on. again, we were lucky that we did not get hit. when restarted, i was able to drive back home and take my wife's car. i am taking the ford edge to the dealer again. i am letting you know that, when i googled for similar problems, there were plenty of complaints on this model vehicle. you can find these reports on the link below: http://www.arfc.org/complaints/2011/ford/edge/power_train/problem.aspx..updated08\25\15 *bf updated 12/1/2015*js

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford edge. while driving at an unknown speed, the awd and check engine warning lights illuminated. the vehicle failed to accelerate. the contact was able to maneuver to the emergency lane. the contact shut off the vehicle and was able to restart the engine, but the failure persisted. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 33,800.

My wife was driving on a surface street with our infant boys in the back seat. without warning, the 2011 ford edge lost all power and the engine vibrated intensely. it could have caused a serious collision. she restarted the car and tried to make it home safely and slowly. it happened again on the way. the next day (7/20/15), when we drove the suv to the dealership, it happened a 3rd time. galpin ford (n hills, ca) diagnosed it with a faulty throttle body, not covered by our 7-year powertrain limited warranty. this is a certified preowned ford edge that we purchased a little over a year ago. throttle bodies should not fail with 45k miles on the car. and, it should be covered by the warranty, or better yet...it should be a recall. the loss of power is a dangerous problem that ford should take responsibility for. *tr

This problem happened a friday night while driving home on a dark road. my car began to shake then no longer would driver and the wrench tool light came on. i had to pull over to the side of the road, put the car in park and turn the car off. after restarting the car, everything seemed to work fine, until it happened again, this time i noticed that the car had 50 miles to go before empty.
