While driving to work, the steering wheel indicator lit up. when continue driving, notice resistance while turning the steering wheel. as i proceeded further, when making turns, the steering wheel was even harder to turn. call roadside assist. to tow car to nearest dealer. dealer informed me the steering column was bad. *tr

My 2005 chevy cobalt lost power steering today. i came here to research if there were any recalls or safety bulletins. i keep finding accidents from this problem and am now wondering how many people have to be killed before you do something about this. i do not see where someone lost life so i guess you don't care. you have all kinds of complaints about the same system but no service bulletins or recalls. w h y ?????? *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. within 30 seconds of turning the vehicle on, the contact loss power steering. when he restarted the vehicle the power steering would reset for 30 additional seconds. in july 2007, the failure occurred intermittently; however, it currently fails whenever the contact drove the vehicle. he took the vehicle to a repair shop and was informed that the entire power steering system needed to be replaced. the vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. he has not contacted the manufacturer to-date. the current mileage was approximately 75,000. the failure mileage was approximately 50,000.

The electric power steering keeps failing while driving. sharp turns, backing up, or shallow turns the power steering keeps on going out making the vehicle very difficult to steer. it also will do this rarely on while keeping straight. i have tried diagnostic tests none of the tests come back as failed. tried finding info on internet to find out what other problems could be, but to find out i am 1 out of 30 or more that has this problem with the chevrolet cobalt. *tr

I have a 2005 cobalt i purchased new. i have had numerous problems with the brakes, headlights, a.c., signal lights etc. but the newest problem is the power steering it goes out without any warning. it does this every day at no certain time. and this is very dangerous as it is very hard to steer when this happens.when the steering goes out it says power steering on dash, most of the time i can pull over and turn the car off wait a minute and restart the engine and it steers fine for awhile. the car has 37,500 miles on it and the warranty just ran out. this could easily cause a loss of control and or a collision. feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.....thanks. *tr

My 2005 chevrolet cobalt ls started having power steering failure about 3 months ago. the power steering would completely shut off at random times while driving the car. the problem got worse and worse, and now the power steering only works for the first 20-40 seconds of driving and then shuts off. it is a safety hazard as the vehicle is very difficult to steer without power steering. the dealer refuses to fix the problem because my warranty is expired, however a car with 49,000 miles on it should not be experiencing power steering failure. *tr

Electrical power steering unit failure. failure occurred at 57,000 miles (odometer). new unit installed-not covered under warranty. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while driving 70 mph, the contact heard a bell ring and the power steering indicator light illuminated. the vehicle's power steering failed. he had to shut off the ignition so the indicator light would dim. after turning on the ignition, the power steering resumed and the light dimmed. the dealer told the contact to bring the vehicle in for a diagnosis. after researching the nhtsa website, the contact believes that the power steering pump needs to be replaced. the vin was unknown. the current and failure mileages were 50,000.

I have a 2005 chevrolet cobalt i think i got the car in like february of 2007 i'm not sure on the dates but i say a little bit after i had got it like about 6 or 7 mouths after i had bought the car it stated to do what it wanted to do like the power steering would lock up on me on a turn or when i would turn the wheel really sharp. my sister was driving the car and she was like you need to get this fixed before you have a wreck or something bad happens. i'm like i cant get it fixed the warranty has ran out on the car. then i would turn the car off and turn it back on and it would work fine. then on one occasion me and my 2 friends was going shopping and i let her drive my car and we was in the middle of the intersection when she adjusted the steering wheel and the car shut completely off on us while going down the intersection cars were everywhere around us. all the gauges went down all the light went off everything just cut off and shut down so we let it coast to the gas station that was on our right we could not do anything the steering wheel was hard so it took 2 of us to turn it. i think that something in the electrical system has a short in it or is felling because my lights when i put it in gear or out of gear the light dim on me and then my power locks don't work so i cant lock my car any time i want to. the locks sometimes you can hear them going up and down in the car. my car got broken into the other night and i have a police report for that because my locks did don't work there for somebody got in my car and stole something from me. if my locks would not keep going up and down then i could keep my car locked. but about a month ago my light on my gear shift just quit working. i have to like tap on it or put the gear shift up in park then back down to drive for it to come on and then it will go right back off. ...

Intermittent power steering failure and key locking in ignition switch. first started about a 1 1/2 ago when the key locked up in the ignition and power steering failed. they claimed to have fixed it but now the power steering locks up more than ever. i can handle the steering (barely) when this happens by my wife at 4'11 and 106 lbs can no longer drive the vehicle. the power steering now goes out everytime i drive the car. *tr

Driving 2005 chevy cobalt and power steering goes out. trying to get out of or in a parking space and power steering goes out. *tr

The electric power steering will occasionally shut off during driving. the car must be shut off then turned back on to restart this. this is a repeating occurrence sometimes happening more than 10 times a day. the only fix right now is replacing the steering column. *tr

2005 chevy cobalt. while driving 55mph, heading into a right hand curve, motor shut off and steering column locked causing crash. car sent to dealer to investigate issue and repair colison damage. they state that no error codes so accident must have been my fault. i contact manufacturer and am told, dealer found no issue, and they dont know of any other similar issues with cobalts. i request a safety review due to multiple instances that have been found online, and am denied. explain to dealer that instances excede virginia state lemon law, and they are not cooperative. seeking legal coucil.

My power steering in my 2005 chevy cobalt sedan goes out every so often for no apparent reason it has been taken back to a dealer once or twice for this problem. they have told me that i have to pay over 2 grand to get it fixed. with the recall out i don't know if mine is covered or not i can provide the vin and other info. problem started right after i bought the car and that summer had no steering what so ever. it has been a major issue for two years now it happens mainly when the car is driven over 80 degrees. and also one of the bulbs in the high mount third break light does not work anymore after being replaced more than once to see if it was a problem with the bulb. front headlights have had to be replaced 5 times since buying the vehicle and i have gone threw more turn signal bulbs to count. *tr

I have had my 2005 chevy cobalt since july 2005. at 800 miles i had it serviced for a leak in the passenger floorboard. it was in the shop 5 times before they found a fix. next was the lights flashing on the dashboard, specifically the check engine, brake and high beam lights. then the heater would not blow so it was in the shop to have that fixed. then the reverse lights stopped working and there is condensation in the headlights. now, two days ago, my power steering light comes on and it becomes very hard to steer. i almost had an accident when i couldn't turn fast enough. when you turn the car on and off it works again temporarily. i will be taking it to the shop again, but at this point it has 50,000 miles and is out of warranty. very disappointed with the quality of this car!! *tr

Power steering goes out and electrical panel fluctuates. this happens at all speeds and at a standstill. car has been in the shop 8 times for this defect. *jb

Car purchased on 3/14/05 from rk chevrolet. starting sept. 12, 2006 the car electrical system started malfunctioning. various dash board lights came on, tick noise from the shifter, power steering light and fails, and the gauges began to go crazy! the car also wanted to shut off, and has boosts of energy. the same issue occurred november 2, 2006, june 8, 2007, september 19, 2007(colonial chevrolet), and october 16, 2007 (colonial chevrolet). after we got it back from colonial, the same problem occurred approximately 2 days later. colonial chevrolet indicated that that could not fix the problem and they were waiting to talk to gm about it! they even suggested initiating a buy back. we have been in contact with gmac in detroit about the issue and no answers have given nor a resolution. currently we have to drive a very unsafe car that jolts, can't turn, and will not accelerate at times. we have been requesting at least a rental (safe car) until this problem can be addressed and no one has offered this in lue of a resolution. what has been done: pcm replaced: (9/15/07)body, throttle (8/7/07, 11/2/06), replaced: body control (11/2/06); shifter bind & ndash; replace slide, automatic control lever replace, floor shift replace, wiring /connector steering suspension ride control??< control assembly. floor shift replace (9/12/06). *tr

I own a 2005 chevrolet cobalt and have had several problems with it. some aren't life threatening (like the power windows not working and the brake light flashing), but i've had a maf sensor short which caused the car to stop running while i was doing 60-65 mph and the steering locked up. fortunately, the car started back up. i've recently dealt with another steering issue. i was driving down an uneven/bumpy road and a "power steering" message came up on the information panel and the speedometer went out. the steering became very mushy and it was difficult to control the car. i've also dealt with the car not starting and the cab filling with gas fumes. there has been hesitation/loss of power when the a/c is on, which makes it unsafe to pull out in traffic or blind curves. the dealership has been very professional and have corrected what problems have arised, but i have lost confidence driving the car and no longer feel safe.

Dt*: the contact stated the steering shaft was replaced twice due to a rattling noise heard when going over bumps in the road. the steering shaft was last replaced was 8-11-06 but the rattling noise continued. when the steering wheel was turned to either side, a grinding noise was also heard. the rear bushings were replaced once due to the vehicle bouncing all over the road. soon after, there was a grinding noise heard when the vehicle was put into reverse. the dealership was alerted.

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle became difficult to steer after being driven for ten minutes. the vehicle is usually driven by student driver's who practice parking on a daily basis. the vehicle was taken to the service dealer who determined the overdrive limits on the power steering engaged automatically when the power steering was used excessively. the manufacturer could offer no repair because the override feature was manufactured on the vehicle to keep the power steering pump intact.

2005 cobalt door automatic.. since june-july of 2006, the automobile has repeatedly been taken to 2 different dealerships for repair or correction during the warranty period. the would act as to stall, shaky, and hesitate while driving. each time the dealer said they were unable to find or determine the problem. now, that the warranty is out and the car has done the same problem (july 10. 2008) the dealership says there is a problem and they will have to look farther into it.. i knew this was going to happen, the moment its out of manufacture warranty, they can find a problem with it. *tr

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 30 mph on normal road conditions, the engine stalled, all dash board indicators blacked out and there was no power braking. no warning signals alerted the contact prior the incident. the vehicle was able to be restarted. the problem recurred on two other occasions. the manufacturer opened a case and referred the contact to the dealership. the vehicle was taken to the dealership who reset the electronic module, however the defect persisted. *ak the windows would go down slow, the intermediate steering shaft was replaced. updated 11/30/06. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated while making right hand turns there is a binding and vibration felt in the steering wheel. the problem is getting progressively worse. the dealership determined there was an engineering design flaw possibly with the rack and pinion. the dealership also informed the contact there was currently not a fix for this, but the manufacturer was working on finding a remedy for this problem.

After recently purchasing a 2005 chevy cobalt, i noticed the steering felt like it was in a bind and i can hear a rubbing noise when making right hand turns. i have become aware of other complaints concerning this exact same thing. i am concerned the power steering will go out and i will lose control of the vehicle. i know there are two service bulletins out on this; nhtsa item numbers: 10019478 and 10017497. please advise me of the details of these bulletins and what is being done to correct this problem. *nm

My new 2005 chevy cobalt purchased 08/28/05 has impaired my driving ability twice now. my power steering light has been generated each time before i was unable to drive or steer properly. on 04/11/06 was on the hwy 1st time and exited off safely. june 2nd 2006 8 weeks later 2nd time occurred down town dropping off child to daycare and my way to work for important work meeting. power steering light came on again and began to jerk my car aggressively back and forth until i got safely home. called dealer to get towed to them they gave me a 1800-222-1020, but failed to tell me that it would be towed to the nearest chevy dealer where the car is now. customer service and the dearlerships have given me the run around for four days, and the chevy customer service and dealership indicates suggest no manufacture defect issue or safety. no reassurance to the chevy cobalt or what their willing to do for safety precautions does not seem to addressed, or what i can or cannot do with the car. no car loaner was going to be given until the service manager saw a problem first. it has been difficult to get a straight answers and quality customer care as to a considerable defect with the steering of the vehicle or the impairment of this type vehicle that can cause serious injury or death. i requested a refund back t. still waiting to hear from either one. i was told between 12 and 2pm today june 6 2006 i would get an answer. no phone call as of yet. its 2:30pm. *nm

My 2005 chevy cobalt has had problems with the steering starting when the car was less than a year old. had taken the car in to fix the emergency brake that had snapped and spoke to advisor about the steering problem but at that time it had occurred intermittently, they checked and found no problem at that time. following another broken emergency brake (that still does not hold) i again explained the steering problem that was happening more frequently and at that time i was told that the repair would cost about 1200.00 and that there were no recalls or warranty left (car had 36,000). there is no explanation of why it happens, it can occur at any time and may remain out for days. there is no way to prevent it that i have found. while driving it will go out and it is almost impossible to turn the wheel, i have had to completely stop the car to avoid missing or not making a turn or avoid another car then while you're struggling to turn the wheel the steering has come back on and the car moves erratically. the cars gauges will stop working (almost like a surge) while the steering is out and i will have no speedometer. the car is driven, we have no choice at times but we try not to drive it because we cannot rely on the steering. we have not fixed the car because we cannot afford the repair. *tr

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 10 mph the power steering and power brakes failed. the power steering and t-c lights on the dash illuminated. this happened three times. the vehicle was towed to the dealer were an unknown computer part was replaced. updated 06/23/06. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated while attempting to start the vehicle the key would not turn in the ignition nor could it be removed. also the gear shifter would not move out of park. the dealer replaced the ignition switch and the steering column in january, however the problem has reoccurred.

Have a 2005 chevy cobalt and on four separate occasions, the power steering has gone out on vehicle. almost impossible to drive. after getting it off the road and shutting off engine and restarting, worked ok. took to dealership for them to check, they could find nothing wrong and said they had no history of this type of problem. this is a very dangerous situation and could results in death or injury. gm has tsbs out there, which of course is customer pay, and they will correct gm defective issues. the cost is approx. $800.00. there have been enough complaints on this issue since 2005. a gm recall should be made mandatory. this is major safety factor. a recall by gm should be directed. *tr

Several incidents involving steering of 2005 cobalt 2-door. each incident occurred on the freeway while driving straight at 55 to 65 mph. front end of vehicle "jumped" side to side and steering wheel responded only with considerable effort. last occurrence was witnessed by highway patrol who escorted me from the freeway with lights flashing. eventually, dealer did replace entire steering mechanism (2006) and problem has not recurred. also have had to have braking system replaced as well as components related to the computer system. *tr

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle was returned to the dealer five times due to intermittent power steering failure and electrical problems. the steering wheel locked suddenly twice while driving, at various speed. the wheel locked on numerous occasions while the vehicle was stopped. each time the power steering light illuminated on the dash during the failure. the wheel unlocked after the engine was shut down and restarted four times. the following electrical problems occurred intermittently, all the gauges fluttered, the fuel gage showed an inaccurate reading, and the emergency brake light illuminated while driving. on one occasion the dealer replaced the power steering housing, but this did not remedy the problem. on all other occasions the dealer completed diagnostic testing, but was unable to determine the cause of the problems. the consumer stated the gas tank was full of gas, however the low fuel illuminated on the dash. the radio malfunctioned twice. updated 04/06/06. *jb

In march of 2006 i was driving about 40 mph & the check engine light came on. as soon as the check engine light came on the power steering locked up. there was a clicking noise that came from the shifter (where you put it in park, reverse, drive). the car started to jerk forward at random & the brakes did not work. i pulled over as soon as i could & turned off the car. after letting it sit for about 30 minutes i turned the car back on & it had reset itself. i called the dealership and brought the car to them immediately. they kept the car for 3 weeks & were unable to get the car to act up while on the diagnostic test. they said that there was nothing that they could do. i had numerous episodes over the next 6 months including multiple times when i was driving between 60-70 miles on the freeway. they could never get it to act up doing the diagnostic testing. i took it to another dealership. they contacted gmac; the dealership agreed to fix the computer system. they told me that they were going to replace one of the computers that they thought was causing the problem and & just write it off since by this point the mileage was at 31,000 but the problem started when the mileage was at around 10,000. when i got the car back it was october 2006. i did not have anymore problems until november 2009. i turned on my vehicle & it did the whole thing again. i turned my vehicle off & called a dealership. i had the vehicle towed to the dealership & they kept it for a month and a half. while they had it i was calling gmac to try & get while they had it i was calling gmac since the mileage was at 94,000. while talking to the service manager at frank parra dealership & gmac the computer was never replaced; only reloaded. to this day the problem has not been fixed & it still happens at random. it has also started to have problems with the locks. they lock at random & trap me in the car or will not let me in. there is a definite electronic issue!!!! *tr

Chevy cobalt power steering. *tr

My elderly parents purchased this car new from a chevy dealership in palm harbor, fl. they took the car in numerous time for the car seizing up while driving and power steering problems shortly after their purchase. the starter would turn off, the power steering would go out, and they often complained about the car stopping in the middle of driving. there were very few miles on the car when this happened since they purchased the vehicle new in 2005. they took the car in for repair for such problems but were told by the dealership that nothing wrong. they sold the car to me, their daughter, because they had gotten to old to drive and they were too scared to drive the vehicle. i purchased the car from them in apx. 2010 and it had apx 9000 miles. since the purchase of the car i have had the same problem numerous times. i have taken the car into the chevy dealership for service several time in chapel hill, nc. they insist that they could not get the problem to repeat. when the power steering goes out, the ignition switch turns off thus turning off the car, and the stalling while driving is very scary to say the least. the most recent receipt from chevrolet for this problem is from 8/14/2013 with 42950 miles on the car. again they said they could not get the problem to repeat. the most recent time it happened was about 2 weeks ago. i replaced the electrical power steering fuse and it has been not indicating that problem. the start still turns off while driving. i think chevrolet has know this was a problem with the chevy cobalt since 2005 and didn't want to do anything about it. $500 toward a new car..,.certainly not enough to want to make me purchase a chevy any time soon. if they can fix the car it would be greatly appreciated. *tr

Vehicle begins to vibrate violently at slower speeds after deceleration from highway speeds. control of vehicle is lost during most violent vibrations, and stopping the vehicle completely does not help the situation. this vibrating (on the front wheels only) will continue for miles/hours. the only things noted on any 2005 chevy cobalt were safety for interior and headlights but there have been over 1100 reports of faulty power steering. slower speeds cause this violent vibration on the front end of the vehicle. it has started approximately a year after purchase and has continued and has gotten worse since then current date 12 february 2010. condition keeps worsening, has almost caused an accident. *tr

We bought this car in july 2005. since this time, it has been in the shop 8 times for various reasons. mainly the steering. going over bumps, it rattles very loudly. the steering column, struts, mounts, and almost everything to do with the steering has been replaced twice!! still rattles loudly. gm tells us that is not a safety hazard. there is a fix in progress but may take 6 months to a year! i pay a lot of money a month for a rattle trap! other items that have been replaced on the car is the radio, the blower motor, the right headlight, all 4 door bezels, all 4 door weather stripping due to wind noise, the shifting column because i had trouble getting the key out of the ignition. this has been the worst new car purchase i have ever made. i have already been in touch with the bbb about it. *jb

Powersteering cuts out for no real good reason. i believe it is a bad design. motor not powerful enough or circuit breaker value too low. its a !@#$% problem. there is nothing wrong with it. it happens every time you drive the car. there are thousands of complaints on the internet with the so called fix done 3 times with the same result. this isn't rocket science and it tempts you to just increase the available current. gm deserves to go out of business for their careless handling of it. this car is a certified lemon with numerous problems that every one off the line has, just google it. my car has an evap error, bad unlock button on remote, pws error, cabin air quality sucks, like sucking on the tail pipe in front of you, transmission doesn't shift up properly, you have to have a feather touch to get it to shift up. clicking sound on shifter every time you hit the brakes, key gets locked in steering , you have to move shifter and or hit brake to get it to release it. they need to get to the root of the steering problem so that when it is fixed it stays fixed. insanity - using the same parts and expecting a different outcome. being a electronics major i know this is a !@#$% error that is rooted in the design. *tw

Dt*: the contact stated while driving the power steering failed. the steering wheel was very hard to turn. after the vehicle was parked the power steering fluid was checked. the vehicle was taken to the dealership where a diagnostics test was performed. the dealership was unable to duplicate the problem. on december 27, 2005 while at 35 mph the power steering failed again resulting in an accident. the vehicle was totaled. the seat belts were worn, but there were minor injuries, the manufacturer has been contacted. *ak updated 2/13/2006 - *nm

I rented this brand new cobalt 4 months after hurricane katrina from mobile alabama, so as to go back to my home town of san francisco, ca. by the time i made it through los angeles, at around 430 am. i lost control of car due to severe stiffness in the steering. which led to the vehicle running off of i-5 heading north bound at a speed of 60 miles per hour. visibility was good, i veered off the freeway into the median portion of i-5, and i tried to slow down but no response which led me to roll over few times, end to end and over and over, luckily i was wearing my seat belt and it held very well, suprisingly, no airbags, none of them deployed, and all the windows blew out, and not the reinforced kind including the front wind shield. the ambulance came, and so did the california highway patrol. there is a report about it which indicates that no airbags were deployed, and i do have pictures of car after incident. i had few bumps and bruises and had few cuts from the glass on my arms and legs, and i had to acquire a few rounds of physical therapy and accupuncture.but luckily i was in good spirits.the car was covered under 3 insurances, which paid for some damage, including my discover card, and my grandma's aarp. and the rental car company. *js

Power steering failure at random. i bought a 2005 chevy cobalt brand new in 2005. after driving 40,000 miles i would get a power steering failure. when i first turn the car on i have power steering, but after a random moment of time it cuts out and the light on the dash comes on. it will go out in mid turn or while going straight & both forward and in reverse. most reports i can find about the problem say it will cost about $2000 to fix and the problem recurs. the only way to get a part to fix it is to take it to the dealership and some dealerships are saying its the steering column while others say its a motor. i think its a scam from gm to make a part that goes out and charge an arm and a leg to fix. the failure happens daily now. its difficult to turn the steering wheel. it is unsafe to turn into busy traffic in the city and driving around mountains. it was the cheapest new car i could find at the time because i'm poor, so forking over $2000.00 for a part that will go out again in another 40,000 miles is never going to happen. even though there is a light on the dash to indicate a power steering failure, it does not show up on diagnostics. it is an electrical issue and not mechanical, so its not under warranty. i have not yet been in a crash, but i have come close many times. many owners i have spoke with have this problem, and have crashed or come close to crashing on many occasions. *tr

Chevy today said that their is nothing wrong with my pwr steering yet both myself and my brother test drove it. now in aug i had the recall and they fixed it so they claimed in aug but yet it is doing the same thing only worse this past wk. amazing how chevy will try to use the excuse that it is something else other then the pwr steering when the instrument light chiming pwr steering was a [xxx] good indication that it was the steering. not to mention i could not turn my steering wheel and when i try to accelerate the car would jolt like it was not going into gear. let me not forget to mention the clicking noise i get underneath the dash near the steering wheel and the clicking in the shifter. same problem new day and they tell me it's fine. i guess i have to kill someone on the rd for them to do something about the car. you guys need to step in because i am 2 steps away from calling a lawyer and suing everyone that is involved with knowing and not doing anything about it. i surely do not feel like being scraped off the darn hwy or the guilt of killing someone over something that you guys should have taken care of back in 2005 when all this started happening. we need to recall all cars from 05 to 09 and get them off the street and have chevy reimburse us or give us a safer car. i know it may seem like a lot of money but 1 life being saved makes a difference. i know car dealers have what they call a bean counter and they don't care if 1 or a 12 people die from faulty equipment and you guys can live with that. but to me that is horrible and needs to be stopped immediately....now means now!!!!!!!!! thank you for your time not so happy with how you guys manage safety and the response time. ignore the parts section or equipment section because i did not know the manufacturer of the pwr motor replaced. i truly do not feel they even replaced it. i think america has been had once again by the car industry.
