Recently reported STEERING problems on 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

I have a 2005 chevorlet cobalt and the power steering module fails during operation. to reset this condition you have to stop the car and re-start the engine. this happens after less than three minutes of driving every time you drive the car and is not safe for someone that is not strong enough to steer the car without power steering. the repair will cost approximately $900.00. *tr

I would start my 2005 chevy cobalt lt and all would seem ok, but after driving for maybe 2-3 minutes, my power steering would give out. it would usually happen when driving around the city, rarely would it happen when driving on the highway. the problem would correct itself if i would pull over and shut off my car and restart it. after several months of doing this however, my car would no longer fix itself and the power steering would stop working after driving just a few hundred feet, regardless if in the city or on the highway. i ended up having to fix the problem in the summer of 2009 by having the power steering part fixed by a local repair shop totaling more than $500. *tr

At 57,000 miles, the power steering light came on in my car while driving down the highway. it became very hard to steer and seems very dangerous. after turning off the vehicle and then turning it back on the problem seemed to go away, but it came back on shortly while i was in the middle of turning onto a busy street. i almost hit a truck. i have since taken the vehicle to the dealership where i have been told it will cost $1000 to fix and they said that there is no sign that it was my fault. *tr

I own a 2005 chevy cobalt, the car is 3 years old and the power steering is out. unfortunately the warranty is out and by the looks of it there is hundreds of people out there with the same problem. i took it to the dealership and they said that a cost of over $1000.00 will need to be paid totally replace the steering problem. they are aware of the manufacturers defect and hoping this will be recalled. i think if they company is aware of this problem we should not have to pay for their mistake. i do not have this money to fix this mistake by the manufacturer. please help! *tr

05 chevy cobalt ss power steering was lost during merging on to highway, has happened twice now. almost hit another car and construction cones not being able to turn the vehicle fast enough. dealership said they found nothing wrong with the actual power steering. but if they were to order a new part it is on back order, so there must be something pretty messed up with the power steering in chevy cobalt to need the parts so much. *tr

Tl*the contact owns 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the steering failed it switched from electric to manual which made it difficult to turn. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician located the failure as the steering column. the estimated cost for repair was $600 to $2,000. the manufacturer stated there is not a recall on the vehicle for the failure therefore they will not assist with the repair. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 54,000 and the current mileage is 79,000.

I am having an issue with my power steering failing in my 2005 chevrolet cobalt. there were really no events leading up to the failure that i see as possibly having an effect on the failure. the failure occurs quite randomly. some days it will fail up to 4 times, and then it may go a week or two without failing. it does seem to occur more frequently in warmer weather. i am obviously concerned because the failure of power steering in the middle of a turn or while driving at high speeds could certainly be fatal for not only myself but any other drivers and passengers involved. i am extremely upset by the fact that chevy will not replace this electronic part at no cost to me since i do not consider it normal wear and tear on the car. i find this to be more an issue of chevrolet using a less than satisfactory part for the car. they have responded that my warranty does not cover it. i've researched numerous forums and it seems that this is not just a problem in my 2005 cobalt but one faced by at least 100-200 others. the problem was diagnosed by a chevy dealer, but for the $1000 repair cost they quoted me i have been forced into driving an unsafe car until i can find a more reasonable price or chevy issues a recall. *tr

Power steering warning light goes and on off. sometimes lose power steering during driving. when car is turned off and re-started problem goes away. *tr

I've just bought a 2005 chevy cobalt 23 days ago. this past weekend the power steering light came on. upon research i have found that the electronic power steering on this and other models is an ongoing issue. i, as of this morning, have no power steering now. i have found many discussions online concerning this matter, yet no info. from gm/chevrolet. according to discussions, it will cost between $600.00 and $2,000.00 to fix and then some of these people had it happen again anyway. this is a major safety issue and i don't understand why it has not been addressed. i, at this point, don't have the money to get it fixed, as i had scrimped to buy it in the first place just 23 days ago. *tr

My name is freddie brown i am a firefighter/emt i am filing this complaint in regards to a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the power steering (electronic on this car) goes out 2-3 times a day which causes the steering wheel to lock up while driving. i have done research on the internet and i am not the only one experiencing this with this model year cobalt. thank god it has not done it while i am turning or it will result in a crash. chevrolet wants $2000 to have it fixed. the car is 3 years old and is a factory default. in order to reset it you have to throw the car in neutral and turn it off while rolling and turn it back on and it resets itself. please look into it. i typed in cobalt steering recall in google search engine and there are plenty of complaints. thank you, freddie brown firefighter/emt marion county fire-rescuer *tr

2005 chevrolet cobalt lost all power steering and had to pull over. *cw the consumer stated the vehicle has electric power steering. once the consumer pulled over, she turned the vehicle off and then on again and the vehicle was fine for a few minutes, but then the problem returned. *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while driving at any speed, the electric power steering shuts down. the contact stated that the warning light blinks twice and then the power steering fails and becomes difficult to steer. the failure mileage was 68,000. updated 10/16/08 *bf updated 10/21/08. *jb

2005 chevy cobalt - 09/20/2008 - while driving straight at approx. 10 mph on a residential street, car chimed, dic displayed "power steering" and power steering was lost. with difficulty, pulled car over to the side of the street, put car in park, turned car off, and re-started car. on re-start, dash display was normal, power steering was normal. on 09/23/2008, while driving straight at approx. 30 mph on a busy road (2 lanes each direction), same thing happened (chime, "power steering" display, loss of power steering, difficulty steering the car); slowed to a stop on approach to a red light, put car in park, turned car off, re-started car, back to normal. on 09/26/2008 (today), while driving straight on a city street at approx. 20 mph, same thing happened (chime, "power steering" display, loss of power steering, difficulty steering the car), no place to pull over, had to turn left on a side street to park, very difficult to control the car while making the turn, parked, turned car off, re-started car, back to normal. i have an upcoming service appointment at my chevy dealership, but service department advises me there is no recall for this issue, and they will only be able to find/fix problem if it occurs while it is in their possession, and i am out of warranty (44,000 miles on odometer). i am now afraid to drive the car, but have no other way to get to work and back. i will not drive it on the highway. i did an internet search on 09/23/2008, and see complaint after complaint from cobalt owners about this very same problem. also see that there was a "special coverage adjustment" (dated 12/03/2007) for 2005 chevy malibus and 2005 pontiac g6s for what appears to be the same power steering problem (remedy for this was for dealer to replace the steering column assembly; special coverage was for 7 years or 70,000 miles). driving a car that suddenly loses power steering on an on-going basis is not safe, why is there no recall for this problem for cobalts? *tr

I have a problem that i would like to issue that has to do with safety. i bought a 2005 chevy cobalt back in july of 05. the power steering on the cobalt's is an eps system (electrical power steering). the power steering has been going off and on when i am driving (i have only 68,000 miles). it started on friday when i was driving into town it went out and i had to pull over, turn the car off then back on. after doing this the car was fine then a few minutes later the power steering went off again! ever since then the power steering has been going out, even on the highway going 55 it goes out which causes it to be very hard to turn or steer my car. i went on the internet and looked up 'issues with power steering on 2005 chevy cobalt's' and i came across hundreds of complaints about the power steering going out on people that own a cobalt or a malibu which also has a eps system. i'm not sure why gm has not recalled this issue when it is a safety issue! to fix this problem the part its self is $500 not including labor. as i did my research people have been paying about $1,200 to fix the eps system. i really think it is very irresponsible of gm to not have a recall on this part due to the hundreds of complaints i have seen! someone please help me on getting gm to wake up and see that when the power steering goes out while you're driving 55+mph on the highway its not easy nor safe for anyone in the car and that they need to do a recall to fix all of the problems on the eps system. i don't know what it will take for them to wake up and recall the part; maybe a death due to eps system failure is what they are waiting for. in that case they have no heart for their customers or appreciation. i also contacted gm customer service and they were not able to help me with anything but tell me i am going to have to pay for the problem to get fixed. i am also not sure if there has been any crash related incidents due to the eps system. thank you! lp *tr

I've had my cobalt for a little bit over 3 years and my 'power steering' warning light started to come on. if i stopped and restarted the car it would go away for a bit but the warning would come back. i took it to a dealer and they said the steering column needs to be replaced and of course my warranty just ran out so i have to pay for it. my dealership is aware of the problem because they have had to repair it on other cobalts. from what i have read on the internet a lot of other people are having the same problem as i am. why hasn't something been done about this? *tr

I purchased a 2005 cobalt ls for my son to drive to and from work and school, the car hand approx. 54,000miles on it, 2 months later my son informed me that the power steering light came on while driving and the car became hard to control, he pulled over and stopped the car and restarted it after being unable to find any obvious damage and the light went out and the steering returned. this continued to go on to the present day. we are able to pay the $1500.00 the dealer wants to replace the entire steering column. sometimes we can stop the car and restart it and the steering returns, you never know when and how long the steering will stay out for. i have also contacted chevrolet to see anything is being done to repair this, (no). *tr

I have a 2005 chevy cobalt ls and around 38,000 miles the power steering flashed in the dash and i lost all power steering in a parking garage. there is no warning that's its going to happen besides the flashing in the dash 3 secs before it goes. this happened everytime i drove over 20 miles at a time, and i go to school in syracuse so i drive the thruway everyday so it was extremely hard to drive with it. i had to get the whole steering column replaced because the power steering is electric. it all cost 675$ i was able to get almost all of the labor charges dropped after working and talking with a chevy dealership. *tr

I have a 2005 chevy cobalt and about 2 years ago my power steering went out. i was driving one day and the road started to curve to the right and as soon as i started to turn the steering wheel, the power steering went out. i pulled over and turned the car off and then back on and i had power steering again. as weeks went by it just kept turning off on me and eventually never came back on. now when i start the car and as soon as i turn the steering wheel, the words"power steering" comes on. i have been driving for 2 years without power steering and i refuse to pay gm to fix this when i see thousands of people complaining online about the same thing. *tr

I have a 2005 chevy cobalt and i got it two years ago it had 40,500 miles when i bought it and at around 45,000 miles the power steering started having problems and it goes out and comes back numerous times and im afraid that one time it will go out while driving and when i take a turn or something it will come back and it will jerk the car it happened to me already almost causing me to hit the wall i researched the problem before and found alot of things about the same problem the results are on www.google.com/gwt/x?ct=np&ei=hrsus5sjayenoaeoimgdaw&source=m&u=http%3a%2f%2fwww.carcomplaints.com/cheverolet/cobalt/2005/steering/power_steering_failure.shtml&whp=3588&wsc=gh&wsi=c21503f7caf61233. *tr

My family were driving in our 2005 chevrolet cobalt. as we made a turn off the highway the power steering went out. my car careened off the road and off into the median. my one child had a small head injury from the accident. luckily we were not turning into traffic at the time, some one would have been killed. after researching this issue i have found the power steering on the chevrolet cobalt have a high rate of failure. i would like to know how many people have to be seriously injured before this issue is resolved through a recall of the vehicles to correct the problem. *tr

2005 chevrolet cobalt - power steering warning message comes on and eventually caused the car to stall or shake. *tr

2005 cobalt, 40k miles. electric power assist steering system going out. light comes on sometimes and power steering will go out. will stop car, and sometimes this stops. mostly bad on hot days. out of warranty, researching will cost me 1,200 to 2,000. understand this is a known issue. why isn't there a recall. i have a 3 year old and brand new baby grand daughter. i shudder to think what will happen if this goes out while they are in my car. they live with me. this is horribly dangerous. they wont recall it, but make the part so expensive you cant afford it. no other part ever cost that much in my life unless i was replacing an engine. i am asking that they recall this part asap before someone gets killed. you never know when it will just stop working, and loose power and or control of your car. i pray that myself or my grandchildren can live through this long enough to save the money to make this ridiculously expensive repair. i cant just not drive it. it is our only car. please please investigate this part in the cobalt and from what i hear a few other car makes. it is the scariest thing in the world to loose power while driving. and extremely dangerous. thank you *tr

On 9/3/08 my husband and i were driving our 2005 chevy cobalt with 45,700 miles on it going 35 mph, we came to a curve in the road and the warning light in our car went off and it read, "power steering", we then lost all power steering. my husband veered off the road because it was hard to steer, we then turned the car off hoping it would clear the error. we started the car and it then drove fine. when we got to where we were going we decided to check the power steering fluid but couldn't find where it was. we looked in our owner's manual and it stated that it was electrical and there was no fluid. the next day on the interstate at 60 mph driving to work the warning light went off and it read, "power steering", my husband maintained control and it never regained power steering. from that incident on every time we drove it kept happening and we would never regain power steering until we turned the car off and restarted it. first thing monday morning 9/8/08 we took it to the dealership. they told us there was an internal fault in the steering column motor and they needed to replace the electronic column. i asked if there had been a recall because i found hundreds of incidents with the same problem with our same vehicle, make and year on the internet. the dealership claimed this is the first they had heard of. i told the dealership that when they replaced my motor i wanted the faulty one back. they got an attitude quickly and told me that i couldn't have the old part because it was under gm warranty. i then asked if that's the case then why do i have to pay for this new part because my old one is obviously faulty. they told me it was part of gm policy and i could not have the old part. after that it made us very suspicious as to why they wouldn't let us take the old part. i told them this was a safety issue endangering people's lives that needed to be addressed. i contacted the gm corporate office and they gave me the same spill that they haven't heard of this issue. *tr

I own a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. gm did replace the power steering motor, but i still do not have the power steering back. the service company told me that it was the power steering module that has gone bad and it is not covered by the recall or the warranty. it is causing my vehicle to jump and sputter. when this occurs i loose all my safety gauges like my speedometer, gas, etc. the vehicle even cuts off completely when i come to a stop at intersections. what do i do now? oh yeah, i even had the transmission worked to make sure it wasn't that either. *tr

Two weeks ago my 2005 cobalt ls sedan suddenly starting having problems with the power steering. while driving my warning light displayed "power steering" and i noticed that trying to steer the wheel was extremely difficult. i drove to a safe place and turned the car off and then restarted it and the power steering was working fine. i am noticing that the time the power steering is working correctly is getting to be less and less. this problem is very dangerous and someone could get seriously hurt or killed if chevrolet continues to ignore the problem. *tr

Air bag light is on continuously and now the power steering light goes on and you loose steering as you are driving. the air bag light was fixed 1 time by dealer and now it is on again and they say they will not fix it because it has been tampered with but they are the only one's to work on it i have my repair invoice. the power steering light just started coming on and now you loose steering as soon as it goes on. it almost caused an accident the first time it happened because i was going around a curve and a car was coming the other way and i lost my steering. luckily i didn't hit the other car but i think this is a major safety hazard. *tr

The time the incident occurred was when we were on our way (my wife and i) to canada for a wedding, we got to our destination and the all of the sudden the car literally starts hoping down the road, then in the middle of the road it completely stalled. the power steering light came on the dashboard and then the check engine light came on. we looked in the manual, because we have only had the car for a month and found the power steering piece to contact gmc. well being in the city and all dealerships closed we couldn't do anything. we shut the vehicle down and tried to restart, the same thing occurred- we were able to drive it to a mechanic near by (when finally it was working) and they had no idea what to do because of the electric power steering. we gave up and finally went home to my mother in laws house. i researched on the internet and then i came onto not one but many websites via google on how much trouble people are having with their cobalts. we are very unfortunate and do not have warranty left over. so when it comers to replacing the 2000.00 part we can not. i really need my car to run properly -my wife and i live in the united states and its a long way home!!! i really hope we do not get into a vehicle accident along the way due to the power steering malfunction, otherwise our lawyer and gmc will be talking. at this time i want a resolution from someone! how can gmc produce a vehicle with multiple known issues and continue to sell it without notifying people how deadly it is. i am very upset and i will never buy another gmc product again. if anyone at this company can do some easy research and find out that there are so many people with the know issue of power steering out there. i want a resolution and someone to pay for the consequence. i need to be contacted asap!!! *tr

after picking up the children i take care of, i took them home as usual. to my surprise, as i turn onto their street in a residential neighborhood, my power steering went out. i was turning slightly right at approximately 5-10 mph and the light on my instrument panel indicated "power steering." i put the car in park, wait a few minutes, put it in drive again, and still no power steering. i turned the car off and when i turned it back on again, things were back to normal. as i leave work, power steering is back to working, until i merge onto the highway and my power steering goes out in the middle of the freeway entry way. i managed to hold my car steady to get to the emergency lane, but to do so i had to cross another lane of traffic. the instrument panel again indicated "power steering." i turned the car off, back on again and it was normal. driving a vehicle and having no indication that the power steering is out, until it's too late, is unacceptable. gm is aware of this problem, and yet they do nothing about it, and that is also unacceptable. *tr

First experienced warning on display panel for power steering failure august 08. have had the car back to the dealer 4 times since that time. 2nd time dealer replaced some wires. 3rd time stated nothing was wrong with the car. have lost complete control of steering 3 times since first occurrence. yesterday dealer stated car was not fixable. being advised by gm to clear error codes and return car to owner. advised i contact bbb to pursue a claim. car is unsafe to drive. *tr

Highway driving to visit friends at the beach. "power steering" appears on the dash and the steering wheel goes stiff. we managed to pull off the highway; upon restarting the car, the message was not present. the same message and power steering failure recurred six times that same day. this is a clear safety hazard as any sudden loss of steering in a critical moment could cause a serious accident. i have not yet taken the car to be repaired yet because the diagnosis seems clear from multiple reports of the same issue (see http://www.topix.com/forum/autos/chevrolet-cobalt/t8fmsuqb7v2dth5jh for over 110 additional complaints) the standard response from gm appears to be to replace the electronic power assist assembly at customer cost greater than $600. this is unacceptable for such a common failure and for such a serious safety hazard. this car is only three months out of warranty coverage. also please note that there was an nhtsa investigation (pe07023) of the electronic power steering unit of the 2005 pontiac g6 which may be the same system failing in the same way. *tr

When i turn the steering wheel i hear metal clunking kind of like a ball joint coming out. *tr

On saturday, august 16th, 2008 i was driving on the highway going about 55-60 mph and as i was slowing down to approach a left turn, a chime noise sounded and the "power steering" message came on and as i was in my left turn, the power steering completely went out and made my car almost impossible to turn the wheel. i pulled into a service/gas station right down the road and tried turning off my car to see if that would help. once i restarted my car the power steering message was no longer on and the steering wheel went back to normal. this same problem occurred once the next day. as the days went on, the problem got more and more frequent to the extent of now it happens like four or five times a day. to get the power steering to work once it goes out, i have to either restart my car at redlights, stop signs, or sometimes even in the middle of the road. this is a very dangerous problem that needs to be addressed by gm. i took my car to a gm dealership last friday and i was told my steering column needed to be replaced. i have researched this issue, and i see it is an ongoing problem with gm. i have notified the customer service department at gm and am awaiting a call back from them to see how they can accommodate me with this situation. *tr

I bought a used 2005 chevy cobalt about 2 years ago. a few months after the purchase the power steering started to fail at seemingly random intervals, but on an all to regular basis. i don't believe i had anything to do with the problem as i was simply driving down the road when it chose to first fail. it occurs numerous times daily and has nearly caused me to crash several times (especially when it fails mid-turn). nothing has been done to correct seeing as they told me to fix the power steering i would have to replace the entire steering column costing me up to 2500 dollars. something that i just cannot afford to pay for. *tr

I was driving to work when the power steering when out, luckily i was paying attention and driving on a straight road. no accidents or injuries occurred. the car is being looked at now by the dealership. i researched this topic online and there are many people having the same problem. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while driving 25 mph, the contact heard a chime from the instrument panel, which indicated that the power steering was failing and the steering wheel locked. the dealer stated that the power steering system was faulty. the vehicle has not been repaired due to the cost. she felt that the vehicle was very unsafe to drive because the power steering could lock at any moment while driving. the current mileage was 53,834 and failure mileage was 46,000.

My 2005 cobalt has had electrical and power steering problems ever since i leased it. intermittently, while driving, the instrument messages start flashing (usually "power steering"). the car then becomes very hard to steer and brake, the engine surges up and down. on aug 3rd the car was involved in a minor accident when it was steered into a curb, possibly caused by another equipment failure. i took the car in to a chevrolet dealer again, when it failed again two more times after the accident. both times the dealer found error codes. however, they said they had a "tsb" on this problem, from chevrolet which says to just clear the logs, give the car back to the customer and to "perform no work". they are putting lives in danger by following this procedure. i have copies of the service orders to confirm my statement. *tr

Recently, after hitting the 30,000 mile mark on my 2005 chevrolet cobalt ls, the power steering has been failing more and more frequently. i will be driving in a straight line or in a turn and either one will cause the failure to happen just the same. it has been failing more and more frequently, starting at about twice a week to now 4 to 5 times a day and makes driving incredibly dangerous. i refuse to take this car through any mountainous areas for fear of losing control and hurting my loved ones beside me. this absolutely needs to be dealt with immediately, for the safety of all drivers on the road, not just those in the cobalt. please make this happen, as i've read many other complaints across many message boards describing the same exact problems with their chevy cobalts. stacy. *tr

2005 cobalt 2.2l 5-speed 30,000 miles i was driving on a highway when i received a power steering message on my cars dashboard display but being on a straight road didn't really notice that there wasn't actually any power steering i wanted to pull off at a rest stop to look under the hood but when i came to the end of the exit ramp for the rest area i could barely steer the vehicle and almost hit a concrete barrier now the steering cuts in and out usually about 2-10 min after starting the car i have read online that the repair can cost anywhere from 600-2000 dollars not having that kind of money right now i am driving w/out power steering awaiting a recall from gm. *tr

Re: my son's car, a 2005 chevy cobalt 16,xxx miles purchased used on may 19, 2008 at 14,869 miles at a local ford dealer. twice in the last week, while driving home from work on the interstate doing approx 60 mph, warning chimes sounded and seconds later a "power steering" and "low traction" lights appeared. steering became all but inoperable, car became extremely hard to handle and car "shook". upon stopping and restarting the car, things went back to normal. his comment was that if some "old feeble person" was driving, they would have had an accident. looking at complaints on various websites, this is a very well known problem to chevrolet (general motors) in that the new "electric power steering" is prone to failure. dozens (hundreds) of people have complained about numerous accidents and chevrolet's response has been that if they can't find a "code" to point to a steering failure, then there must not be a problem. currently the car has been with boemler chevrolet in arnold, missouri monday 7/28 and today tuesday 7/29. monday afternoon they called and said they would like to keep it another day since they could not get it to fail and couldn't get a "code" to diagnose the problem. multiple times in the websites, customers have said that the steering column had to be replaced to fix the problem. this problem has caused other customers to have accidents according to the complaints i have read. i don't know if they've been smart enough to read their owner's manual to get the proper people to complain to. i realize that complaining on some website is not going to get anything done, and that it must be done through proper channels. this is a very serious problem that must be addressed by chevrolet (gm) before more people get hurt or worse. i think a voluntary recall on their part would look a lot better than having a "class action lawsuit" filed against them. *tr

I was driving down the highway making a turn and my power steering went out it beeped at me and the dash displayed "power steering". when i restart my car its fine for a wile but then it dose it again and from what i can tell speed, turning, rpms, temperature distance have nothing to do with it. i was ran off the road due to this with my wife and child in the car my daughter smacked her head on the window i tore something in my should just trying to steer. *tr

With little warning, power steering went out as i was leaving my driveway; i barely could turn the steering wheel; when the engine was shut off, i was able to drive short distance and then the power steering light came on. fortunately, the car was still under warranty; my steering column had to be replaced. now i continue to have problems with the front end, with the engine light coming on!!!! i thought chevy cobalt had good consumer reports. what happened chevrolet??? did you all decide that quality just isn't worth a [xxx]! how about public safety!!! i am an rn and am outraged at the number of complaints regarding this same issue, and yet no public recall has been announced. does someone have to die first? *tr information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Power steering failure signal comes on after any length of time of driving, at any speed and on any pavement. the steering wheel locks up and the car has to be turned off and restarted in order for the steering to reset. fuel injection failure. key won't turn in ignition. cd player picks and chooses when it will work. *tr

My daughter is having problems with the power steering going out on the car, which is very dangerous. the problem is random. her warranty has run out and the repair would cost about $2000. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while driving at speeds of 60 mph, the vehicle began veering to the left, without warning. the power steering failed without warning. the vehicle was unable to steer in a straight direction which resulted in a crash into the median and a small ditch. the vehicle began spinning out of control, and rolled over at least three times. the driver suffered very minor injuries. however, the passenger suffered several major injuries. the police arrived to the scene and the passenger was air lifted from the scene. the passenger's pelvic bone was broke in three places, a fractured vertebrae and tail bone, right hip was broken, left hip injury, and all five ribs on the right side were broken. the vehicle was completely destroyed. the failure mileage was 95,000.

I have a 2005 chevy cobalt. in the summer of 2008 the power steering began failing. i would drive and for no apparent reason the power steering would cut out and steering would become incredibly difficult, making a turn was near impossible. i took the cobalt to serpentini chevrolet (in strongsville, oh) and they said that the steering column needed replaced. my car was no longer covered by warranty so i paid for the repair out of pocket ($1100). i have a copy of the service invoice to verify the information i am reporting. *tr

I was driving to work and my power steering went out and then as i was going around a curve, the steering wheel locked. i went into the oncoming lane and was able to turn my car off and restart it again. i drove for another 30 seconds or so before the steering went out again. the steering continued to go out after driving a short distance after everytime i started to drive. the steering column had to be replaced. *tr

The electric power steering (eps) on my 2005 chevrolet cobalt shuts off at random intervals. in order to regain eps function, the car must be turned off and restarted. this happens at least 4-6 times during a 30 minute trip. chevrolet will not cover to substantial cost to fix the eps system if it is not under warranty. research has led to me believe that this has happened with several cobalts (05-08 all models).

Electrical power steering non repairable. *tr

I was driving my 2005 cobalt on the highway and suddenly the power steering light turn on and could not manage the car. i have to stop the car but this is a dangerous situation. no one was injured but why wait till someone gets hurt to do something about it. *tr
