Vehicle description: 2005 chevrolet cobalt power steering the power steering fails at random times, occurring during driving while the vehicle is in motion. it occurs at any given vehicle speed. this occurs sometimes one time during a particular driving period. sometimes, will occur many times during a driving period. to temporarily fix the problem, the vehicle has to be stopped, turned off for a few seconds, and then started back up. this seems to reset the error code within the computer. but the problem will return at random. research online suggests that many cobalt owners experience the same issue. many owners have had steering columns replaced, steering modules replaced, with no resolution to the immediate problem of continual power steering failure occurring at random. *tr

Failure of power steering. i will be driving and my power steering will fail while i am driving down the road. this problem happens daily alomst everytime i drive. happens more frequently after a u-turn or sharp turn and during hot days. *tr

2005 chevy cobalt as soon as you start vehicle it has power steering but as soon as you start driving a dinger alarms and displays the power steering message. and then there is no power steering, however it is drivable but in my own opinion not safe because it does take alot of force to steer especially at low speed!!!! *tr

As far as i know, there were no accidents leading to the failure, but 2 months ago, i started experiencing power steering failures in my 2005 chevrolet lt. after shutting the car off, and back on, the problem disappeared. then it started happening more frequently, once, even 8 times in one day. i didn't take it into the dealership for the first time until 7/21/09 because it was getting too risky to drive. i have taken it to the dealership to get the steering column replaced but the problem still persists. they have given me various excuses as to why this problem keeps occurring but none of them are valid. when they test drive it, they claim it never acts up for them, but it does it randomly, there is no pattern to why it acts the way it does. i have taken it to the dealership a total of 5 times already. they have the car now because on 8/10/09, i nearly got into an accident and had to jump the curb in order to avoid getting hit because i couldn't make a left turn into traffic. i then suffered a severe anxiety attack and needed assistance from family members to come pick me up and get the car towed back up to the dealership. i am only 19 years old, & this is my first car. all i want is something safe to drive so i can go to school, work, and perform my other tasks alive and in one piece, please help those of us experiencing these problem to get gm to provide a recall on these cars. i love this car, but it is not worth losing my life over. i have paid a total of $938.00 on the steering column & $138.00 for towing expenses. this has got to stop, & i cannot afford another car. thank you for your time and consideration, andrea johnson *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while driving between 25-30 mph, the power steering warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. immediately, a chime sounded inside the vehicle. there was a loss of power steering and the steering column locked. the driver experienced extreme difficulty steering the vehicle, which resulted in greater effort to turn the steering wheel. the warning indicator remained illuminated until the engine was turned off. the contact pulled the vehicle over into a parking lot and then turned off and restarted the engine. the vehicle restarted and resumed normal operation. the failure recurred on a separate occasion. the vehicle has not been repaired. the vin was unknown. the failure and current mileages were 50,000.

My daughter, a college student in abilene,tx., drives a 2005 chevy cobalt. she had been driving her vehicle in normal conditions when she realized her power steering had stopped working. *tr

Was driving out of parking deck at work when power steering went out. this happens on a daily basis and is dangerous. checked and found out this is a major complaint of 2005 cobalts. expense to have repaired is not an option at this time. safety hazard not knowing when it will go out each day. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. whenever the contact turns the vehicle in any direction she noticed that the steering wheel will began to jurk forward, the contact also noticed at the same time the ignition will not allow the key to be removed and that the power locks will lock and unlock on their own. the vehicle has not been diagnosed and there were no prior warnings. the current and failure mileages were 50665.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while driving approximately 40 mph, the power steering light illuminated on the dashboard and she lost power steering capabilities. she was able to drive onto the emergency lane, turn off the ignition and restart the vehicle. after being restarted, the vehicle performed normally since the power steering reset itself. the following week, the failure recurred. three days later, while driving to 2.5 miles to a repair shop, the vehicle lost power steering twice. the mechanic stated that the steering motor and control needed to be replaced. the repairs were made and the failure has not recurred. she has not called the manufacturer. the current mileage was 27,699. the failure mileage was approximately 24,849. updated 03/12/10

I bought a 2005 chevy cobalt at a locate dealership. after 3 months the power steering turns off at random. it started when i was entering a freeway at a curb and all of a sudden i notice the car was pulling straight because the power steering was out. i almost lost control of the car because of this. i took the car to the dealership that i bought it to, and they said it's not part of the extended warranty, and i would have to pay for labor and parts cost. the failure happens basically if i have been driving my car more than 30 minutes and the dealership did not do anything to correct the failure. there numerous complaints on chevy cobalts regarding the power steering failure through researched, and i can not believe it has not been recalled. *tr

I bought a 2005 chevy cobalt lt sedanfrom carmax in june 2008. since i have had it the power steering has frozen numerous time during driving, locking up while going 45 mph is very dangerous to say the least. i have taken this car back to the dealer and they claim not to find anything wrong with the car. now the power steering will lock up one day and the next day it will be fine for two-three weeks, then the same thing will happen again only worse. first time it happened, the power steering was slow to respond and the transmission was jerky. the second time, the power steering was hard to turn the lights came on in the drivers info center indicating a problem and the transmission started making clicking noises. the third time the power steering actually froze during driving, all the dashboard lights came on and the transmission, speed odometer all were acting if there was water in the gas or something meaning it was not responding when i put my foot on the gas. i have taken it back to carmax, they acknowledge a problem, but they "cant fix", they then say it has to be taken to a gm dealer who say they cant detect a problem during a diagnostic test. this a very dangerous situation and a very dangerous car to drive. i have refused to drive unless they fix the power steering, they have kept my car waiting for it to "duplicate" the problem which is ridiculous. this car needs to be recalled and that power steering system replaced. gm knows that this is a huge problem but refuses to now even listen to any complaints now that they are in bankruptcy. but this car definitely needs to be recalled before someone is killed. *tr

I own a 2005 chevrolet cobalt, and about a month ago i was driving down a country road when my "power steering" message was displayed on my dashboard stating it had shutoff. this then lead to my car trying to shut itself off in the middle of the road going 55 miles per hour. the gauges were flashing, radio was flashing, the car would not shift gears and was rocking back and forth, and i couldn't really steer the car. after i was able to get it under control and stopped and shutoff it seemed to reset the system and i had no problems until a few days ago. i was driving on a very busy interstate during rush hour while going about 80 miles per hour, and the situation happened again except i was nearly in a collision with semi truck trailers, it took all i had to get it off the road without hitting anything. this scared me to death. this time the system did not reset , but i was able to limp it to the chevy dealer near my apartment. come to find out it was the :body control module" that was bad. it cost me $508 dollars to fix this one issue. two weeks ago i had to take it in for a lower left front control arm bushing that was bad, and also the shifter solenoid was bad, and i had spent nearly $1100 for all of those safety issues as well. *tr

First the key got stuck in the ignition and needed to change key and tumbler and ignition switch which you had to buy at the dealer since it is to new of a car for the auto parts stores. the dealer wanted 300.00 to fix this problem. that happened at 82,000 miles. now the power steering message goes on and it chimes 2 times and then you can hardly turn the wheel. it happens mostly when it is warm and when you are driving straight. i do not have 1200.00 it fix this car. i guess i am luckier than some other people. i have 132,000 miles on my car.this is a hazard waiting to happen. this car needs to be recalled because it is just to much to fix and something gm has known about for awhile and has done nothing to fix it. *tr

Power steering in a 2005 chevy cobalt, with 45,000 miles will go out for randomly. if you turn the car off and back on it works fine for a short period of time then it will go out again. it is very difficult to steer and is dangerous to make turns quickly while driving. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while driving 70 mph, the power steering failed. the vehicle was towed to a repair shop and it was confirmed that the power steering failed. in addition, the power steering warning light illuminated. the dealer stated that the vehicle was not covered for the repair; however, it has not yet been repaired. the failure occurs intermittently. through online research, the contact discovered numerous consumers experiencing the same failure. the failure mileage was 57,000 and current mileage was 57,005. updated 8/28/09 *cn updated 09/03/09.*jb

2005 chevy cobalt power steering failure. *tr

Power steering stopped working along with thousands of other cobalt owners. i haven't replaced it yet. after reading other forums the car is doomed to do it again. i have had the standards factory cd player replaced 4 times. first at 12k miles, finally last time at 60k. the key becomes locked in the ignition daily. i have to reach a finger in the whole underneath the steering column to hit the key release button. just a poorly made car and everything goes out right after the warranty. *tr

The steering wheel locked up in the car and the dic/ instrument panel displayed 'power steering' . the steering system shutdown completely with no prior warning of any kind. this happened in the middle of a very busy intersection and i was unable to steer the car in any manner. this is a safety issue that poses risks and threat of property damage, severe injury or death to the car owner, other car drivers on the road, others cars on the road, pedestrians and other building structures. this could happen again at any given time. research indicates that this safety issue progressively increases. repair requires the replacement of the steering column, pscm (power steering control module) and power steering motor unit estimated to cost upto $2000. research on the internet also indicates a number of customers whose vehicles have electric power steering (as this car does) as opposed to conventional hydraulic steering systems have experienced this issue. gm has issued the following communication on this topic, but this particular bulletin does not refer to owners of 2005 cobalt car model. bulletin gmp07-217 - 07126 special coverage adjustment message #:vsu20071643 special coverage adjustment #07126 dated: december 3, 2007 since this is a serious safety issue resulting from a manufacturing defect, i am requesting that chevrolet reimburse me or pay for the cost of repair even though my car is past the standard manufacturers warranty period. *tr

I have a 2005 chevy cobalt and my power steering has been out for about 8 months. i've started seeing articles concerning the power steering and thought i should report my car. *tr

The problem i am reporting is with my 2005 chevy cobalt ls. the power steering quit working suddenly with no warning. this failure happened while driving down a major road and cause all power steering to go out. once the car is shut off it starts working again, but each time the mean time between failures decreases. the failure happens so often now that i can't drive the car. the steering column has to be replaced now since gm does not sell individual parts. *tr

I have a 2005 chevrolet cobalt and in june 2009 my power steering went completely out and i had to replace it. after looking up if this is a common problem i that this happens to alot of the cobalts. chevy refuses to make it a recall when this is a major safety issue. my power steering would go in and out and i almost had many accidents because of it. the cost of the repair was $950. that seems ridiculous to me on a vehicle that i only had 4 1/2 years. *tr

2005 chevy cobalt, power steering randomly goes out in my vehicle while driving. i can turn the car off and when i restart usually it is fixed but light comes on and steering goes out without warning. this seems very dangerous, fortunately haven't wrecked yet. cost to fix about $2,000. looked up on internet and about 400 other comments and complaints on 1 website regarding same problem. sounds like recall should be issued! *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while driving 65 mph, the power steering failed and the vehicle shook. the vehicle has not been to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the contact feels that the vehicle is unsafe to drive because the loss of power steering and the shaking could cause a crash. the current mileage was 74,950 and failure mileage was 70,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that the power steering fails sporadically at any speed. the dealer stated that she would have to pay $700 for the repair. the vehicle has not been repaired. the failure mileage was 60,000 and current mileage was 82,000.

I have a 2005 chevy cobalt. went out out driveway and the power steering light came on. drove back down and called the dealership. they said it was ok to drive it, the light just comes on. had me test it and see if the ps did fail, which it didn't. went to drive it the next day or so and the check engine light came on. at that point we went to the dealership to see about the car being towed for repairs. after looking it over, the dealership said they would have to replace the steering column. from what i'm reading, this isn't an isolated incident with the cobalts. *tr

I have a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the power steering intermittantly goes out. this has been going on for about a year and i have taken it back to the dealer twice, but they have been unable to fix it.

My power steering has gone out on 6/3/09 ,7/31/10, 10/8/13. it been in the shop many more times and they can not seem to find anything wrong. the power steering light comes on and then wants to die. i do not want this to lead to an accident. what can we do to protect other 2005 cobalt owner? the recall was fixed and still having many of the same problem. it has no warning just does it whenever it wants! i could be turning or driving on the interstate. the car needs to be recalled!!! i have been putting up with this long enough. *tr

I own a 2005 chevy cobalt and after about 10 months my power steering went out. the first time this happened i was in the middle of the intersection trying to make a left hand turn and the steering went out. i pulled into a gas station turned off my car and restarted and it drove fine for approximately 5 minutes before it went out again. i thought that this was maybe a one time thing but unfortunately i had to drive without power steering for 2 months because i was unable to afford the cost of replacing the part. i live in the city and everyday i had to park on the street in front of my apartment and without power steering, parallel parking was nearly impossible. this became a daily headache for me. after about 2 months, i had the opportunity to get the part replaced and after i picked my car up from the shop with the new part, the steering went out again. so, unfortunately i had to have the manufacturer replace the supposedly "new" part again. luckily, after the second "new" part, i finally had steering again. i loved my chevy cobalt until the steering went out; it seems as though the quality of my car has been steadily decreasing ever since this has happened. i would greatly appreciate a recall of some sort, especially considering i am a full-time college student and i cannot afford to shell out another $700 on a faulty steering part. something needs to be done, i am positive i am not the only person in the position and would like for someone to actually listen to what these owners are going through! *tr

The power steering goes out in my car almost every day. sometimes as much as 5 or 6 times a day. it makes it so there is no power steering until i pull over and turn the vehicle off once you turn it off and back on it works fine, sometimes. it has almost cause me to get in an accident and has made it so my wife refuses to drive for fear of her life. *tr

2005 chevy cobalt has a problem with its power steering. my car loses power steering without warning. if i turn the car off and back on the problem goes away for a while. i also have a problem with my ignition. the key gets stuck in the ignition when i turn the car off and is hard to get out. *tr

I have a 2005 cobalt ls and the power steering goes out now within 5 minutes of driving the car. i use to be able to turn the car off and it would correct the problem, but now turning off the car doesn't correct the problem. i know what part needs to be replaced, but no one sells just that part, they want to try to sell you a whole steering column for $1500.00 or more. i think it is disgraceful that gm is asking for bail out money, but they will not recall this model of car to fix the problem. i cannot afford to go to a gm dealership and pay to have this problem fixed. i am not responsible for paying for this it is gm's responsibility! gm wouldn't be in financial trouble if they built cars that didn't have problems or if the cars they built that had problems they took responsibility for fixing them. i don't think i can trust gm anymore. eventually someone is going to get seriously hurt or worse. *tr

About a year ago our family's 2005 chevy cobalt the power steering went out and went out every once in awhile. now it is going out more frequent and goes out as soon as not even going 1/2 mile down the road. when it goes out you will hear a click and gets hard to steer nothing has been done yet to repair the problem. *tr
