Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph the power steering warning light illuminated on the instrument panel, then the steering column locked up. as a consequence the risk for vehicle crash increased.the driver pulled over to the side of the road with caution. the engine was turned off then restarted. the vehicle was able to resume normal operation. the vehicle was in the process of being taken to an authorized dealer for inspection. the failure and current mileages were 29,200.

My daughter bought a 2005 chevy cobalt from a dealer. the vehicle had less than 45k miles when the electronic power steering would suddenly turn off without warning making it extremely difficult to drive. it has gotten progressively worse. research shows that this is a recurring problem with this model as safety is an issue. chevy will do nothing as there is not recall at this time. why do we go after foreign car manufacturers and do nothing to american companies? it would cost between 1500 and 2k to repair. *tr

I have a 2005 chevy cobalt and periodically it starts shifting really hard and the power steering goes! i have to stop the car, shut it off, let it sit, start it, shut it off, repeat three times, then it is okay for a while. *tr

2005 chevy cobalt power steering continued to go out daily- had to have it replaced. husband would be driving and no power steering.would turn off car and then turn the car back on and could drive. several dates too many to remember. a recall should be mandated as this is a safety hazard.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while driving 25 mph the power steering warning light illuminated on the instrument control, and then the gears in the transmission began slipping. he had to exert great force to the brake pedal to stop the vehicle and shut the engine off. he was able to restart the vehicle and resume normal operation. the vehicle was taken to a dealer and repaired. the failure mileage was 59,000 and the current mileage was unavailable. updated 11/17/09 *bf after all the failed attempts of fixing the vehicle, the consumer was told the body control module needed to be replaced. the power steering would go out occasionally. all of the gauges were acting erratically. updated 11/18/09

The power steering fault keeps coming on turning the electrical power assist off. i have to restart the car to get it to work again. *tr

My steering wheel locks up out of the blue in the highway or anywhere , i have to shut the car down and re-start it so it can be operational again but i have been close to get into a serious accident because of this problem. it happens repeatedly without warning. *tr

My 2005 chevy cobalt had a power steering failure at 67000 miles. this happened while i was going 60 mph on interstate 95. my car made a noise and beeped at me and power steering came lighting up on the dash. my car then revved up to 6000 rpms and caused me to sway in the middle of traffic and i had to pull the car over, fearing i was going to crash into other cars. i will have to replace the steering column which includes the sensor that helps with power steering. it occurs often. i will be fine for a ride but then i get back in it and start driving and get up to 30 of 40 mph and power-steering will come up on my dash and all of my instruments go whack. my speedometer goes to 0 and the engine revs but doesn't increase speed. it will cost anywhere from 1250 dollars and 1800 dollars to fix this problem at my local dealership. *tr

The power steering on my 2005 chevrolet cobalt keeps failing at random intervals. usually when it fails, i have to stop and restart the engine to restore it, and it continues to happen while on the road. *tr

2005 chevrolet cobalt with electronic/power steering defect that has caused the steering in my vehicle to fail and/or work improperly. this failure first occurred around 21000 miles it was repaired under the warranty that i had purchased for the vehicle when i bought it. my car now has 36000 miles on it and the same problem is occurring again the dealers will no longer cover the repair even though the car is still under warranty. *tr

My 2005 chevy cobalt was randomly losing it's power steering. once i had that costly repair, it began randomly stalling. usually at intersections, but sometimes just for slowing down. i've had it in to be fixed several times. it has improved but it still happens occasionally. *tr

Power steering warning message comes on while driving. after this comes on then the power steering fails making it nearly impossible to steer the car. *tr

2005 chevrolet cobalt - had total power steering failure. the repair was made by our local chevrolet dealer i.g. burton in seaford, de for $998.94 on 8/27/09. code #9996 they replaced the steering column assembly due to faults in motor unit. part #19200751 f-column kit and part #4238 cpc.. i complained to chevrolet customer assistance center. a representative responded back by telephone denying my request for financial re-imbursement claiming "they had no reports of complaints about this problem". *tr

Without any warning at all, my 2005 chevrolet cobalt's power steering failed. i had to put a bit o muscle into the steering wheel to avoid hitting an oncoming car as the road was curving at this point, luckily i was able to get home safe. restarting the car makes the problem go away for a brief time period, but i have to be ready for the steering to fail at any moment. i have heard several complaints from others who have had the same problem, it is only a matter of time until the problem causes a fatal accident if there have not been any already. *tr

My 2005 chevy cobalt 4 door sedan has been having intermittent power steering failure. while driving the power steering just cuts out and it creates a very dangerous situation. the car is extremely hard to maneuver in traffic and creates a very dangerous situation. this problem is intermittent and if you pull off the road and shut off the engine the issue corrects itself. it does not occur in cold weather and occurs more often as the outside temperature increases. failures of steering are critical complaints and should be dealt with immediately. *tr

On friday august 25th 2009 i was driving my car when all of a sudden the power steering indicator came on in my car and immediately the power steering went out while i was driving. on tuesday august 29th 2009 i had my mechanic look at the problem and discovered that my 2005 chevy cobalt has an electric power steering system and it can only be fixed by replacing the entire steering column. i immediately contacted gm chevrolet to inform them and they stated that there has been no recall scheduled for the 2005 or 2006 chevy cobalt. i did an internet search on the chevy cobalt and discovered that power steering going out is a common problem among chevy cobalt owners and chevy is failing to do anything about it. this is a safety matter because the power steering will go out at random and chevy says that it will cost $800.00 just for the part not including labor cost. this is a manufacturing error that chevy needs to correct. *tr

Power steering light keeps coming on in the dash, car will miss its shift points, powersteering goes inop, speedo goes from 40 to 60 mph, brakes pulsate when trying to stop. no repair has been found yet. *tr

Power steering goes out while driving my 2005 chevy cobalt. makes it very difficult to turn at slow speeds. *tr

This is my second complaint i have had to make. i have been doing research on this topic for over a year now. all you have to do is type in "cobalt power steering" into google and millions of complaints on various websites and forums come up. last year when i filed a complaint there was no damage involved. this time there is and it needs to be fixed. i think there are plenty of people complaining about this subject. i have a 05' chevy cobalt that when driving randomly the electronic power steering goes out. i can't drive more than five minutes and every time i get in the car it cuts out. this time i was backing out of a driveway and the power steering went out as i was coming to my parents mailbox. i went to turn and i couldn't and i hit it. i have $500 in damage that i don't want to claim to insurance because then it will just cost more in the long run because my insurance will go up. i am a firefighter in central florida. i see car accidents all the time because of vehicle problems or failure. is it going to take me going down the highway, someone pulling out in front of me, and me dying? one less public safety employee in florida. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated while driving 5 mph the power steering warning light illuminated on the instrument control panel and then steering became difficult. she contacted the dealer, in which a technician speculated that the steering column needed to be replaced at an expense of $500.00. she contacted the manufacturer and was referred to a dealer. she was in the process of taking the vehicle for inspection. the failure mileage was 35,800. the current mileage was 36,400. updated 10/21/09 *cn the consumer stated the electric power steering motor and computer could stop working on the highway at any time. updated 10/22/09.*jb

I was driving on the highway, when my 2005 chevy cobalt's power steering just cut out. i almost crashed into the car beside me because i was not expecting for the car to do that. when i got home, i tried to check the power steering fluid level in the car and found that there is no place to put it. i later found out that the power steering is electric and a simple fix such as filling power steering fluid ( much like i've done with previous cars i owned) was not possible. the steering column would have to be pulled out in order for the problem to be fixed. if i didn't have an extended warranty on my car it would have cost thousands to fix which is ridiculous. *tr

I had no power steering/power steering on my 2005 chevy cobalt failed and the nearest place i could go was a local goodyear repair shop. they kept my car for 3 days, had to order new parts and take out the steering column assembly and replace cost to me was $956.75. this occurred on aug. 20, 2009. i had no idea that this was a defect until i just read about it now. 64,000 miles are on my auto and i am on a fixed income, cannot afford another auto. *tr

Power steering went out on the highway on my 2005 chevrolet cobalt with about 47,000 miles on it. *tr

I have been having an issue with my 2005 chevy cobalt. the power steering just randomly goes out. it started about a month ago. i had to leave my car parked for 2 weeks until i could afford to bring it in. i thought it might have needed power steering fluid, but there is no place to put this fluid. the car has some type of electrical power steering system. the steering wheel becomes difficult to turn sometimes impossible to turn. this is dangerous; i almost hit another car and a pedestrian after my steering wheel locked up. it stopped for a few weeks then the steering wheel began to lock up again. this happens every few days. last night i was almost hit by an oncoming car because my steering wheel locked up in the middle of a turn. i have been quoted that this is a common defect with this car and it will cost $1100. after simply putting in chevy cobalt and power steering into a search engine on the internet, i have seen that hundreds maybe thousands of cobalt owners have this same issue. there are petitions all over the internet for the power steering just going out. this shows me that i am not the only one with this problem. if many cobalt owners have this issue with the power steering, i think that this is a manufacturing issue. i think something needs to be done about this defect. *tr

I own a 2005 chevrolet cobalt and the power steering has intermitent failure. *tr

Power steering stops working. at least 3 times. *tr

Power steering on 2005 chevy cobalt goes out leaving the car very hard to steer. turning left or right requires two hands and a lot of muscle. if the car is turned off and restarted problem goes away and comes back. the problem occurred about the 39,000 mile make. *tr

Power steering went out on vehicle while not even driving. upon research the problem is very common. i am extremely thankful that it did not happen to my wife as she was driving. the car was parked in front of the house while i was getting things out of the trunk, and it started beeping saying power steering. the next time we went to drive the car it had none, and when started never said anything was wrong, at all! *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while driving the warning lights illuminated on the dashboard and it became difficult to control the steering wheel. the failure occurred frequently. the dealer replaced the steering column at the owners expense for $894. the following day after the vehicle was repaired, the failure recurred. the dealer stated that a motor needed to be replaced for an additional $100. the manufacturer confirmed that there were no related recalls and offered no assistance. the failure mileage was 79,000.

I am reporting about chevy cobalts powersteering problems. my car is a 2005 chevy cobalt. last year at 33000 miles the powersteering failed and when i took it to chevy they said this was a problem with several others. i was required to pay 2000+ dollars to resolve the problem. i could not afford and so i ignored the problem which disappeared on its own for almost 10 months. now its back again. my car has less than 390000 miles now. as i goggled the problem, i came across so many other people with a similar problem with the same model same year. isn't this a manufacturers problem? requesting investigation on the problem. *tr

I am a driver of a 2005 chevrolet cobalt and i would like to report a malfunction in the steering system in hopes of a future recall of the vehicle. the power steering sporadically fails as a result of a faulty mechanism in the car. i recently had a problem with the steering on the highway, which led to loss of control of the vehicle, and a nearly serious accident. there are hundreds of cobalt drivers that have had the same problem and had to pay $900-$2500 to repair their car. gm is aware of this problem but has chosen to do nothing about it. this malfunction is potentially dangerous and warrants a recall. thank you for giving this issue your serious attention. *tr

While the contact was driving he noticed that the power steering light had appeared on the dashboard and shortly after the vehicle no longer had power steering. the vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealership and the contact did not notice any differences beforehand. the current and failure mileage is 49000. bml. updated 10/06/09. *lj updated 10/06/09.*jb

The electric power steering in my 2005 chevrolet cobalt has a defective motor that gm refuses to pay for under warranty. it intermittently cuts in and out without any warning. once it cuts out, the vehicle is nearly impossible to steer. this can happen on a city street or a busy highway. when driving, a click is heard in the steering column, then steering is lost all together. this problem has not happened to me alone, thousands upon thousands of people have experienced this as well. proof can be found in a google search under "chevrolet cobalt power steering failure". *tr

Tl*the contact owns 2005 chevrolet cobalt. when the steering light illuminated, the steering wheel changed to manual which made it very difficult to make left and right turns. the failure has not been diagnosed by a dealer. the current and the failure mileages were 22,000. updated 09/23/09 *bf the dealer stated the power steering motor failed. updated 09/29/09.*jb

2005 chevy cobalt power steering goes out. some days its every 10 min some days its every hr. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while driving approximately 20 mph, the driver noticed that the power steering light illuminated on the dashboard and that the vehicle had suddenly lost power steering. the failure occurred intermittently. the current and failure mileages were 50000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while attempting to pull away from a stop light at 5 mph, the engine suddenly shut off. the contact was able to restart the vehicle but the power steering would not function. each time the vehicle was restarted, the power steering would stop working once the steering wheel was turned. the vehicle was towed to the dealership where the contact was informed that the power steering was defective. the dealer repaired the problem and the contact had not noticed any failures since. the failure mileage was approximately 72,000. the current mileage was approximately 76,600.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while driving 40 mph she noticed that a light illuminated on the electrical instrument panel stating power steering failure and then she lost steering control. after restarting the vehicle, she was able to drive normally; however, she had to continuously shake the steering wheel so that it would not lock. the contact did not notice and failure or warning lights prior to the failure. a local repair facility stated that the power steering was failing and the cost for repair would be $900.00. the vehicle has not been repaired. the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was related to an existing recall and to file a complaint regarding the failure. the failure mileage was 73,000 and the current mileage was 73,010.

The power steering went out on my chevy cobalt 2005. it is a defective part. *tr

I have a 2005 chevy cobalt and the power steering went out as i was leaving work. it happened a few times on my way home. i was able to get it to the dealership but had a very difficult time making turns. the end result was having to have it be replaced. *tr

Today is aug 16 2009 and i have been having problems with my 2005 chevrolet cobalt for a while. since the last year my steering wheel has been shaking every time i put on the brakes, and starting the last 3 weeks the power steering illuminates and the steering wheel just locks and i would have to pull the vehicle on to the shoulder and shut off the engine and restart it and then it works again.this normally happens 2 or 3 times a day. i have not taken it to the dealer yet although i did speak to a service advisor about the situation and he thinks it might be the power steering pump and that it would probably run me about $1200 to fix it. i really cannot afford that kind of money due to me being unemployed. the last date that this incident happened was on aug 15 2009. please i need your help and assistance. thanks *tr

I was driving down the highway, when my vehicle became difficult to steer. the steering locked and the power steering indicator light came on. i had the vehicle towed to a dealer. they state there was a "short in the electric power steering motor". they replaced the power steering motor. this vehicle has less than 45,000 miles. i had to wait a week and a half for the dealer to get the part. previously, i had to have the ignition and gear shift replaced. *tr

I have 2005 chevy cobalt, and the power steering indicated came on and all of the sudden the car stops. *tr

In aug 2006 purchased a 2005 chevy cobalt ls 4 door sedan. after having for 6 months, needed new front brakes, had replaced and was informed that the rotors were warped; had to replace two other times. finally got another manufacturers installed. since getting this car have also had the key stuck in the ignition whereas i couldn't get it out dealership can not reproduce (and it is out of warranty). am still having this problem to date, more so now because of having to replace the steering column. (see below) in mar 2010 because of recall had steering replaced. in july 2011 it was replaced again, and again (9/13/2013). i lost control of the car while making a turn almost hitting a parked car. mechanic was able to reproduce this. but because gm is the only place that you can get these parts you therefore have to use them.(no after market parts made) it cost me $792 to get this replace this (out of pocket).. since getting this car, have had to replace struts, springs, shocks, brakes, control arm bushings most of this as i understand it would normally with higher mileage. when i got the car it had i believe 22k miles on it. now it has 54200 on it...that's roughly 5k/yr. all maintenance has been performed and the car has not been abused. gm needs to do something with these cars not just ignore the problems. *tr

I purchased my 2005 chevy cobalt, used in february 2006. in february of 2008 the electric power steering began to go out if you made several sharp turns (i.e. parking garages.) after apprx. six months the power steering began to go out sporadically while driving down the freeway. this problem continued throughout the year. in the past four months, the problem has escalated to the point that i cannot even drive 1/4 of a mile with out the power steering going out. when this happens, all you have to do in order to reset the steering is put the car in park and turn off the engine. upon restarting the car the problem corrects itself, however; it goes out again immediately. *tr

A couple months ago i was driving down the highway going 55 mph when i heard 3 dings. i looked down and power steering message was flashing across the information bar. when power steering wasn't flashing across the screen the temperature had lines instead of numbers like it couldn't register. my check engine light came on along with the traction control light. the speedo and tachometer were moving really erratic too. when i stopped and tried to pull out again it was like i popped the clutch on a manual shift while it shifted into 2nd. then it bogged down really bad like it shifted way too early. than my power steering went out. i was stuck on the side of the road.http://www.carcomplaints.com/chevrolet/cobalt/2005/steering/index.shtml. *tr
