We have classified the 1046 complaints from 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt about STEERING into the following categories.
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while driving approximately 50 mph, the driver lost power steering and swerved onto the other side of the road; however, she was able to regain control of the vehicle. a half mile down the road, the failure recurred. when the failure occurred a third time she refused to continue driving the vehicle and notified the dealer. several dealers advised her that she was not eligible for a free remedy since the failure was not associated with the warranty coverage. the dealer also stated that there were no related recalls. the manufacturer was not notified and the vehicle has not been repaired. the current and failure mileages were approximately 76,000.
Power steering on my 2005 cobalt goes out intermittently, it had not done it for two months. but recently, while i was taking a turn, it went out, and i was unable to keep the car in my lane and hit the curb on the opposite side of the road, thankfully no other vehicle was present in intersection, or it would have been a front end collision. now it works only for a few minutes when i turn my car on , but goes out every time i drive it. i also have problems with the power locks locking and unlocking themselves constantly while i'm driving, and even after the vehicle is parked. i can not leave it unattended because it unlocks itself. i started to have the problem shortly after purchasing it in 2007, but the warranty expired, its 63,000 miles, and cannot afford to fix it. this should not be an issue in a car less than 5 years old. i live in minnesota, and the roads are often icy, i am fearful it will happen again, and i may not be so lucky again. i have also had problems with the front suspension, i had the shocks/struts? replaced 2 months after buying it, at around 40, 000 miles, and they still have the same problem after the dealer fixed it, i should have complained then, but i was afraid to shell out more money for something else they would claim was wrong with it. *tr
I was driving my 2005 chevy cobalt when i tried turning a corner and the steering wheel failed to work causing me to hit a curb. i then seen that my power steering light was on and that's what caused this. *tr
On tuesday december 1st 2009 i was driving on the interstate and my power steering just stopped working without warning. i was barely able to turn the wheel and get off the interstate safely. i was terrified. the next time i started my car the steering seemed to be fine, however later that afternoon the same thing happened. once again, my steering wheel was practically useless. i immediately got my car to my mechanic and found out this is a big problem with chevy cobalts. i was going to have to replace the steering column and the motor costing $900. i am so disappointed in this matter and will be reporting it to gm as well. *tr
My 2005 chevy cobalt is losing power steering abruptly and unexpectedly each and every time i drive it. *tr
The recent recall regarding cobalt power steering prompted me to actually report this. we have a 2005 cobalt ls we purchased used, and the loss of power steering has occurred several times over the past couple years, but to my knowledge, only in our driveway upon putting it into gear. it has never happened while on the highway."power steering"message pops up on info panel, and a combination of things seem to occur together. the transmission seems to "clunk" upon shifting into gear, and usually the traction control dummy light comes on as well at that time. the problems have always corrected themselves, so no incidents to report, but rather concerned now upon hearing more. the car now has 98000 miles, but found paperwork from previous owner that complaint was made to dealer at 31000, and the electric steering motor was eventually replaced @ 67000. so it appears this car is already on it's second motor. i have never taken it in, as the previous replacement cost over $1000, and couldn't afford that. this recall couldn't come soon enough, as my kids recently started driving it to school. *tr
Purchased a 2005 chevy cobalt..currently only has 56,000 miles. the power steering has completely gone out. i know that this is a huge problem for this type of vehicle and the dealership is trying to charge people anywhere from 400-900 to fix. there needs to be a recall on this. i know there is currently an investigation but how many complaints does it take? this is ridiculous! i am not paying that amount of money for a car that is barely 4 years old and is a consistent problem for all those that have purchased this same car. it is a serious safety hazard and is a nuisance to try to operate a car that is barely drivable. something needs to be done. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while the contact was driving approximately 55 mph, the steering wheel jerked in a left and right motion. the vehicle loss control and crashed into a guard rail. there was no injury. the police was not called to the scene. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection. the technician was unable to duplicate the failure. the current and failure mileages were 2,500.
Power steering suddenly went out; have read online about this happening to hundreds of other chevrolet cobalt owners. *tr
2005 chevrolet cobalt power steering goes out after a few minutes of driving. turn the ignition off and then back on and power steering comes back on then off again after driving for a few minutes. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. he could not properly turn the steering column, because the power steering failed. a technician from the dealer stated that the steering column needed to be replaced at the owner's expense. no repairs were made. the failure and current mileages were 76, 500.
2005 chevy cobalt power steering problem, it seems like loose when you drive. no accident happen, just want to file a complain on this car. *tr
2005 chevrolet cobalt 89,000 miles. power steering went out 11/26/2009 while on expressway going approximately 65mph. power steering? light came on and vehicle became very hard to control. next day vehicle ran fine. three days later power steering light came on and power steering went out again. it is now permanently out and i was told by the dealership it will cost $900 if not more to repair, also questioned dealership if there are any recalls and repair man said he checked and there wasn't?t. this is obviously very unsafe and a very costly malfunction with these vehicles and should be recalled by gm in my opinion. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while driving at speeds of 55 mph the power steering alarm flashed on the dashboard and triggered the alarm. immediately, the vehicle lost power steering and proceeded to drift to the left into oncoming traffic. the contact had to utilize extreme bodily force in order to avoid crashing with oncoming traffic and maintain control of the steering wheel. she was able to maneuver the vehicle off the highway and shut off the engine. when starting the ignition, the power steering reset itself and was operating normally. the failure occurred two additional times and the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where he replaced the entire power steering column and assembly. there were no failures after the repairs were made. the failure mileage was 65,726 and the current mileages was 82,000. updated 4/7/2010 *cn the power steering assist module was replaced. updated 05/12/10.*jb
I was driving my mother's 2005 chevy cobalt in phoenix, az on the 101 freeway. while driving at approximately 60 miles per hour the power steering discontinued to function. i am an experienced driver and was able to react to the failure. the following week the car went to kempton's chevrolet dealership, the entire steering unit needed replacement. luckily we have a relative who works for gm and was aware of the problem with the cobalts. gm helped with the repair cost, however my mother still had to pay $500. my mother is retired and living on a fixed income. *tr
The power steering in my 2005 chevy cobalt went out. for no apparent reason i lost my power steering while traveling through chicago. as you can imagine this makes it extremely hard to drive. being a college student i can't afford to replace the faulty steering column. my fiance and i have owned the car for less than two years and the car had under 80,000 miles on it. there are several safety issues as i do not have complete control of the car. to add insult to injury i live in michigan and the winter driving isn't easy especially without power steering. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated as he was driving at low speed the warning light came on and the vehicle started jerking and the power steering was lost. the contact stated he almost landed up in a ditch because he could not control the vehicle. the vehicle was driven to the dealer where they repaired the power steering assist motor and installed an a f motor kit and the lost communication code. the failure mileage was 76,794.
My 2005 chevy cobalt has experienced power steering failure at 72,000, this happens in less than 1 minute of driving the car, makes it very hard to turn left or right after coming to a full stop. this is very dangerous and could cause a serious accident. *tr
The power steering in my 2005 chevy cobalt ls fails unexpectedly. there seems to be no reason as to why, or when this will happen again. i believe that it is a safety hazard because there are random times when the electric power steering fails. the problem first occurred while driving around a sharp curve which almost lead to an accident. i'm not sure how often this occurs as it is random. however, i can say that i have not yet been able to drive for more than an hour without it giving out. also, when you turn the car off and restart it, the power steering will come back on. but like i said before it is completely random as to how long it will remain on. there have been times when it would work for an hour after restarting it, to less than a minute after restarting it. i would like something to be done about this, because it is such a hazard and could take lives. i believe that the price for fixing a problem like this is over 1000 dollars without warranty. this is something that i am not ok with. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt which was purchased on october 8, 2009. while starting her vehicle and attempting to drive, the power steering light illuminated on the warning panel and the steering wheel would not respond. there were also several instances where she was almost rear-ended while driving approximately 25 mph due to the steering wheel not responding when she attempted to make a left or right turn. the failures occurred without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, they could not duplicate the failure. the failure continued to occur and the dealer advised her to replace the power steering pump and steering column. the failure mileage was 51,561. the current mileage was under 51,682. updated 3/10/10 *cn the dealer replaced the intermediate shaft. updated 06/18/10.*jb
My 2005 chevy cobalt has power steering issues since i bought it (11/09). the traction control light comes on and power steering comes on the message board. when this happens and i am driving it, it is very hard to control my steering and jerks when i accelerate and/or change gears. it also becomes a little harder to come to a compete stop. i took it to the dealer and they greased the wires thinking that it was a connection problem. it worked alright for about a month and a half but then the light flashed on again about 2 weeks ago and has flashed on randomly ever since. this seems to be an ongoing problem. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while driving approximately 45 mph, the power steering light illuminated on the dashboard and then the power steering failed. the failure occurred 3 to 4 times a week. he turned the ignition off and restarted it; the failure appeared to reset the power steering and it failed within 5 to 10 minutes. he took the vehicle to the dealer and was informed that the electric power steering was the cause of the failure and needed to be replaced. he had not spoken with the manufacturer to-date. the vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. the current mileage was 80,779. the failure mileage was approximately 70,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while driving he heard a beeping noise, and then he lost power steering. the vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealership. the current and failure mileages were 36000.

~dear sir/ma'am~ hello. my name is [xxx]. i drive a 2005 chevy cobalt. i love the car, but there is a problem and i don't know who to contact. i hope this is the right place. i do not know a lot about cars, but as i was driving to work yesterday and i tried to get in the turning lane but not knowing my power steering pump had just stopped working for some reason and i almost smashed into the back end of a semi and i was going 45mph. i contacted the place i bought my car from (gateway chevrolet-fargo , nd ), and they said they will only fix it if i get into an accident of some sort. all i have is the power train warranty left for coverage, and that doesn't cover the power steering. the car is only at 55,478 miles and they will only help me if i get into an accident? that is not right. i don't care who you are, that is not right. my husband actually was looking online today and it is a common thing in chevy cobalts. there has been at least one fatality from the power steering not working in another victims cobalt, yet they still have not put out a recall on it. i don't understand. do i have to die before this gets fixed? i paid more than i should have for this car to begin with... and they will not help me unless i crash the car? that makes no sense. please help me! i am scared to drive and this is the only car i have. please please help me! you can call my cell phone with any questions or you can reach me at home after 5:30pm cst. please help me with this. if you are not the right place, please send me some sort of direction. i need help with this. *tr p.s. i've signed a petition online i am number 202 on the petition. the link is below: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/2/chevy-cobalt-power-steering-problems you can visit it to see proof, if not whatever. it is great proof that this is a manufac.default and it should be recalled! thank you for any help you can give me. ...
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while driving 25 mph and making a right turn the power steering locked which forced her to turn on her hazard lights, drive onto the emergency lane and turn the vehicle off . she was able to continue driving normally after 5 minutes. there were no warning lights on the instrument control panel. the dealer was not contacted. a local mechanic was unable to duplicate or diagnose the failure. the failure recurred on two occasions. the failure mileage was 60000 and the current mileage was 61000.
2005 chevrolet cobalt, had power steering motor fail while driving in november 2009, had it replaced at a chevrolet dealer, dealer stated steering shaft will also fail as a result of bad motor and should be replaced, no money, steering shaft now making noise and vibration, chevrolet dealer said steering shaft is bad and needs replaced, gm representative, after 10 days of dealing with them said until i receive letter from gm they will not reimburse even though i had gm dealer do work. they stated steering shaft not included in recall although car is becoming increasingly difficult to drive. please help. thank you *tr
I gave a 2005 chevrolet cobalt to my daughter, bought the car second hand @ approximately 40,000km it now has approx 55,000 km. when i bought the car i asked the dealer for a maintenance print out and there was no reference to steering issues.twice since last november the steering locks on her while driving, she describes it as very hard to steer, rattling noise and jerking in the steering. teh first time she pulled off the hwy and drove home on the shoulder, she called me up to describe the problem, i thought it might be power steering fluid only to find out it is electronic system. both times i called the dealer but he was not really offering any sollution, he only told me he was aware that it had occured on other cobalts and it could cost up to $2000 to repair. today i saw on the internet that gm was under investigation for hundreds of crashes due to this problem....do they have a solution for this problem and if they do what is my recourse...i am concerned for the safety of my daughter. *cn
2005 chevy cobalt this car has powersteering failure. the powersteering will fail on what seems to be only 10 yards down the road. it will reset if the car is turned off and then back on. but only to fail 10 yards down the road again. before it wasn't as often as it is now. driving it is a risk because of the effort it takes to control the steering. *tr
Vehicle lost power while making a right turn onto traffic from a gas station. power steering went out on vehicle, making it very hard to steer. electrical power assist unit had to be replaced as a whole. old unit is not available. *tr
I was driving and my power steering light came on and i lost my power steering completely. i'm a 95 pound girl and it is impossible for me to turn my car. when i turn the car off and let it sit for a moment and start it again, the power steering comes back on for a moment and then goes out again. this is very dangerous and i am going to have to pay 1000.00 to fix it i'm 21 years old, i don't have that kind of money laying around. *tr
I have 2005 chevrolet cobalt ss/sc that i bought new in may 2005. about 3 weeks ago the power steering started to malfunction. the car had approximately 29,000 miles on it at that time - it now has approximately 30,600 miles. the power steering stops working - the warning system chimes and a message "power steering" is displayed on the computer display. when this happens the car is hard to steer and control. what began as infrequent and intermittent problem has become a problem that occurs each the car is driven now, occurring within minutes if not seconds each time the car is driven. i deal with this problem by pulling over, turning the car off for a short time and restarting the car. i do this because the power steering is reset each time the car is turned off and restarted. the power steering then begins to function again only to fail again after a short time. i took it a dealer on 12/03/2009 and the service department found a possible poor connection at the pscm and motor. dielectric grease was applied to the connections and reconnected. there is technical service bulletin (070232007b) for this problem. *tr
While driving under normal conditions, attempted to take a right hand turn at normal speeds when the power steering failed (locked up). was able to navigate safely to side of road. stopped and restarted the car and power steering operated fine. the problem re-occurred intermittently. car was returned to dealer where the electronics system in the power steering was replaced. *tr

I was driving down the highway and all of a sudden "power steering" flashed in the information center and steering became extremely difficult. when i stopped and started the car up again it was fine. i checked the manual and it only said that if this happens it's a serious problem and to contact the dealer. i have since read that this is a defect occurring with cobalts. *tr

The power steering in my 2005 chevy cobalt went out on my wife's car. she was driving down the road, when a light turned on and the power steering no longer worked. fortunately she slowed down and was not involved in a crash. looking up this problem on-line, there are hundreds of complaints about this problem with early model cobalts. i can't believe there is no recall. how many accidents do we have to have? chevy is not fixing the problem, without charging $1000. *tr

I was driving home from work one evening and the power steering light came on, nothing happened. then later that evening my husband and son drove to the grocery store and on the way home the power steering went on and off like 4 times. the total drive from the store is approximately 2 miles from our home. and the speed he was driving is a 45 mph highway. due to lack of funds we have been only driving when we absolutely had to. we have noticed that as the weather has been colder the power steering doesn't go out as often. but it still continues to go on and off. but we now have our car in a shop to get fixed this week. hopefully this will resolve all issues. *tr

My girlfriend bought an 05 chevy cobalt from a local dealership that inspected the car 15 minutes before we drove it off the lot. 25 hours later as my girlfriend is exiting the highway, slowing down from 55 mph. the powersteering fails on her and sends her into the guard rail doing about 40-45. i have been pn forums and have found an obscured amount of the same complaints. something really needs to be done about these cobalts before someone dies. luckily she was only knocked around a little and wasn't seriously injured. *tr
