Problems with 2006 Jeep Commander ENGINE

On average, the 2006 Jeep Commander starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 100 721 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2006 Jeep Commander

Check engine light came on. engine surged rpms and lost all power while driving. i put it in neutral and started it back up. upon parking, rpms surged again, vehicle tried to pull forward before the rpms dropped and stalled the engine in drive. i checked used my scan tool to check the code and it came back p1521 which is for wrong engine oil. i used royal purple 5w20 in my last oil change. it drove the vehicle for 2098 miles before this incident occurred with no issues in between. i noticed the 4.7 litre had a recall done for the same exact issue and it being a software update for the power control module.

This issue has happened three times now, i have been driving on the freeway at about 70 mph and all of a sudden there is a ding on the dash board and the car stalls, and the engine light comes on. once you shut down the car and start it again the car works fine but the engine light stays on for a couple of hours, according to jeep they charge for a diagnosis and i see online that this is happening a lot in my type of vehicle but jeep has yet to acknowledge it. i think it is very dangerous since i have been driving on a freeway where people are driving as fast or faster than me and could cause a problem.

Repeated transmission over temp error messages displayed on dash. error is intermittent, occasionally causing vehicle to turn off unexpectedly during operation. happens while driving in normal conditions.

I was driving on the interstate and my vehicle stalled and the check engine light cams on.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. while driving at unknown speeds, the vehicle stalled and the security warning indicator illuminated. the contact called gastonia chrysler dodge jeep ram (2339 e franklin blvd, gastonia, nc 28054, (704) 874-6000), but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the contact stated that the key was not programmed to the vehicle and the failure was similar to the failure listed in nhtsa campaign number: 14v438000 (electrical system). the manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: 58694595. the contact was referred to nhtsa. the failure mileage was 158,951. *bf

Intermittent inability to start vehicle. my jeep commander 2006 has a problem that is being discussed all over the internet in chat rooms and blogs but is not being acknowledged by jeep. the issue occurred when jeep was in parked position. i am a disabled man and i was left stranded in very cold weather for two hours with a car that would not start. it had nothing to do with the starter, or the solenoid. this seems to be a serious issue with jeeps and a safety issue to the owner especially if the owner is stranded and has no heat and unable to walk to get help. i am requesting nhtsa to look into this because jeep is stonewalling the public and this is a serious and dangerous issue that the public should be aware of by way of a recall. people rely upon their automobiles and expect them to operate accordingly and not to have random and intermittent engine non starts for no apparent reason and with no explanation from jeep and no solution to the problem going on 9 years now. please investigate this widespread problem known to be an issue with jeep commander.

At 100k with no warning, engine runs hot, i wait for 30 min to cool down.. drive again and it runs hot.. mechanic says head gasket blown..smdh.. along with that it was raining and the sunroof starts leaking. 8 months prior i had to replace the transmission. what a jeep and i am still paying on it.!! the jeep people needs to recall these and at least reimburse people, now im stuck with buying a 5000 engine on a set income...basically couldve bought a brand new car with the funds i put out so far..

Valve seals went in engine causing catastrophic fail. shut off vehicle, went to start again, started but started to make a horrible noise, would not stay started.

Engines surges continuosly. rpm's surge.

Engine died while driving on highway twice

Vehicle stalls randomly, losing power brakes and steering. this is a major safety issue. unfortunately, there needs to be solid a resolution as people can't spend tons of money on what the issue "might" be and then get back on the road in this death trap to only have it stall again.

2006 commander stalls on highway and then starts right back up. happens at any speed.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. while stationary or while driving various speeds, the vehicle stalled without warning on more than one occasion. the contact was able to get the vehicle to restart after placing the gear in park and depressing the accelerator pedal. a dealer was not made aware of the failure. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was approximately 193,000. the vin was not available.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. while driving 40 mph, the vehicle accelerated forward and the check engine indicator illuminated. the contact called a local dealer (twin city dodge chrysler, 650 sagamore pkwy s, lafayette, in 47905) and was informed to schedule a service appointment. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 154,197.

Jeep commander 2006 limited 5.7 l engine. the complaint is as follows: while driving, at random, slow and medium speeds, all the dashboard lights activate at one time followed by immediate loss of engine power. (at no time did my knee hit the key or ignition cylinder) this issue does not clear up on its own. the only solution to avoid an accident is to immediately put into neutral, pull off the road or highway as quickly as possible. (at this time, the car is sputtering severely or stalls) next step- turn the key to off position, wait a few seconds and re start the vehicle. it starts and runs normally. the loss of power and dash light activation is occurring every other day. upon my own further investigation, many reports have been logged (with basically the same complaint) on carcomplaints.com, with additional video proof on u tube ( just type in jeep commander dashboard haywire) with several videos of the incident. chyrsler customer care claims ( as of today) to know nothing about it - told me to call local dealer, local jeep dealer (car was purchased new) was contacted- they claim to now nothing about it. told both agencies to get off their butt to look at car complaints.com or just view the numerous u tube videos. with this many complaints, i find it surprising that chrysler to not be aware of this issue. i have followed all recalls and had the ignition lock cylinder and reprogram the final drive control module completed many months before problem occurred. any assistance in resolving this serious safety issue would be greatly appreciated.

My favorite, jeep commander 2006 3.7 v6. 103600 mileage. the car shuts down without warning. this has been happening from last november. i feel like i'm in a death trap because when cars going 60 - 70 mph on i-495 and car lost power. all i can really do is pray that my family don't get killed. the dealer fixed flipping key problem at the same year of summer because of the recall. this is really not related i believe. it happened 6 times mostly winter season between november through january eastern time last year, and this stalling problem came back last sunday dec 10th, 2017 while driving on northern state parkway to micro center in ny. 3 times already this season. the best way only i found for our safety. slowly move over on the shoulder finding place to stop while speeding down, and have one chance of stop to break vehicle without power. however, luckily it starts again and runs normal. the dealer, daimler chrysler consumer center. they never care about this issue and keep charging for the service without a solution. my research is on going to find ecm, pcma, and fcm problems. i am scared for my families safety. the car cuts off while driving on highway. any ideas, please please please please please help us.

2006 jeep commander 5.7l stalls at low speed, city driving going strait

On christmas i backed the jeep out of the driveway so i could drive my truck. bumped the curb slightly while parking and vehicle died. started right back up so i didn't think much of it. today my wife took the kids to school in it and ran fine. parked for two hours and went to start and it will crank but not turn over. fuel gauge doesn't read correctly. at full it says half a tank and while you are driving it may drop to below empty with a full tank. i have been reading all the reports about the 2006 commander and a lot of people seem to be having this starting problem. i haul my family around in it because we can't all fit in my truck but i don't feel safe in it because you never know when it's gonna cut out and die. my kids range from 1 week to 11 and i don't really want them in it. i'm thinking it a fuel pump or wiring issue. both issues occurred in my driveway or right in front of my house. *tr

My vehicle stalls and cuts off when stopped at stop signs and traffic lights. the engine also shakes and acts as if it wants to die while driving. i took my vehicle in for recalls after i left the service center it once again cut off at the first stop light i came to. *tr

2006 jeep commander 4x4 dies at low speed. almost caused accident on freeway. had the ignition recall taken care of. hoping that it was the problem. it was not... now trying to sell vehicle and don't want to cuz i would have to have someone else get hurt. in that death trap the jeep now sits in my side yard my wife refuses to drive it. i'm looking for any ideas on what to do? please help

Tranmissiom going out. gear not shifting into drive.

The vehicle stalls in motion on both residential and highway and loses power steering. cruise control once you set it acceleration occurs on its own this occurred on the highway. ignition bumps out of the on position into accessory or off on it's own.

Takata recall the motor keeps dying while driving. i took it to a mechanic that told me that the motor was defective and the motor has to be replaced. the engine only has less than 85000 miles. the mechanic told us to buy a jasper motor because jasper made changes to the motor because the original motor was defective. mopar no longer makes the motor and referred us to an aer motor. the parts department at chrysler said that they are not sure or not if the original mopar motor has made the same changes to the motor that jasper has made. jasper states that changes have been made to the motor and specifically states that improvements have been made to solve the defective issues of an original 2006 motor. i am not the only one it has happened to. motors were being replaced at 75,000 miles are a common problem according to google on this model. *tr

I went to start my 2006 jeep commander and it would turn over, but it would not start. i finally worked with it a little bit and got it to start, but then my power steering went out. i cut it off and tried it again and everything went back to normal. however, when i got going, there was a horrible gas smell coming from the rear of the vehicle. this starting issue has happened multiple times and every time the power steering goes out. the vehicle was stationary at a public place after it had been running for about 30 minutes.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. while driving 45 mph, the brake pedal was depressed, but the brakes did not respond. the contact crashed into the rear of another vehicle. after the crash, the contact's vehicle stalled without warning. the air bags failed to deploy. there were no injuries and a police report was filed. the vehicle was towed. the vin was included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v43800 (electrical system). the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 190,000.

For the passed 3 years our vehicle has switched gears from drive to 3rd gear, while driving. the vehicle jolts and changes gear for a few months and returns back to normal. we continue to use it at 3rd gear. there is no way to change it back to drive manually. we've taken it in to auto shops and the symptoms return. *tr

When driving on the highway the vehicles engine just stops. power steering is gone if you have to maneuver out of the way it's very difficult when decelerating it seems to down shift very hard like going form 4th to 1st the dash lights flash randomly when ever they feel like it. i've been thru 3 fan speed controls fir the heater this has been happening for the last 2 years

I purchased the vehicle in 2010 and within a month some electrical issues were intermittently occurring. the dealer said the ignition had to be replaced and did so. these problems seemed to continue thought not often. the symptoms are as follows-first the lights start flickering and then go out. all of the dash components go out including the speedometer, fuel gage, radio etc. the ac fan also turned off. this condition did not stop the vehicle from running it just turned off the electrical components there was however a problem with stalling, a separate issue from the electrical issue., a few times while in the vehicle was stopped it would stall when stopping or starting off again. this was true in reverse and forward. i was never really worried about safety until last night when the lights went out while driving on a dark curvy country road. it was only for a few seconds but it was terrifying. this issue needs to be dealt with. in 2015 there were several recalls issued and they seemed to be related to the problems i was having. i had all of the recall notices dealt with. the software upgrades and the ignition replacement. this didn't solve the problem. in fact it

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 70 mph, the vehicle stalled. the contact had to maneuver to the side of the road and noticed all the warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was shifted to park and restarted normally but the check engine warning indicator was illuminated. the contact stated also that the same failure occurred for approximately three years. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the vehicle was repaired under an ignition switch manufacturers recall two years ago. the vehicle was not repaired this time. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 128,000. the vin was not available.

Shuts off without warning while driving ignition switch was replaced dealer can,t find any other problem i was on the highway 3 times and a couple times on a local street

Stalling problems while driving. this issue has been going on for over a year now, i was told by jeep to get p41 recall repaired and possibly fix the problem. i've had p41 done and the same problem keeps happening. everything just completely shuts down and i am unable to steer and have to restart the engine. this has happened to me numerous of times including driving on the freeway. i've contacted jeep customer service, i was told i was the only one they know of regarding this issue which is not true. another problem is dashboard lights will light up on and off while driving. all light indicators will stay on for period of time until car is restarted again.

When driving my jeep commander it stalls. it happens when i am stopped and try to go or when i slow down then try and accelerate. my life has been at risk when this happens. one of the times i was driving on the interstate going 65mph and it stalled. i am extremely upset about this especially since i have a 2 year old son that is in the car with me.

All the electrical on my dash most the time is lines and flickers, but decides to show up once in a while for a minute or two. my big problem is starting the car. it does this click click sound most the time but then starts once in a while out of the blue. i have bought a new battery and alternator within the last year. it also slams from gear to gear! i have had four different diagnostic tests done by different places & i have been fighting with this for a couple years!

This is in response to the recall for the ignition switch on my 2006 jeep commander. my vehicle has had the ignition switch replaced at the dealership but you should know that the replacement does not cure the problems that it was meant to fix. the work was completed at 9:30am and the next time i drove that day,it did the same exact shutdown as it did before (with all lights on the dash flashing).the stalling and shutdown does not occur because of hitting the key with your leg as i am only 5'4" and my leg doesn't touch the ignition. the shutdown occurs because of a short somewhere inside the ignition. it occurs randomly and sometimes can be stopped by lightly turning the key to the left. i have also found that the shutdown occurs at extreme frequency when driving in heavy rain or extremely slushy roads, which tells me that somewhere, something is getting wet and shorting the vehicle out. it is very hard to get the lights to stop flashing in this type of weather and i have had to pull over a couple times because of the danger of stalling in traffic. i am stuck with this dangerous vehicle because of my financial situation and have fought for something to be done about it by the dealer starting 20 days after i bought it but of course nothing was done until the government got involved and sadly it still hasn't cured the problem. i hope you receive more complaints and make the dealership correct the problem the right way.thank you for your time,[xxx] 'information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).' *bf

Jeep has total loss of power, control, and steering while driving. car will no start unless in park or neutral, losses all power electrical and steering once you let foot off of the accelerator. i almost ran into another vehicle while heading hope and was nearly rear ended at another intersection due to stalling and no control. all of this happened within hours of ed voyles jeep replacing the ignition switch p41 recall. super super dangerous...

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. while driving at various speeds, the vehicle shook and the engine sensor light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the engine was faulty. the engine was replaced and the failure was remedied. the manufacturer was not notified. the vin was invalid. the failure mileage was 20,000.

I received recalls p73 and p41 called sorg dodge in goshen and downey chrysler jeep in nappanee in sept of 2015 needless to say no one will do the recall work. i have had nothing but the run around since these came out. what am i suppose to do??

I bought my 1st new car ever hoping to keep it forever. i treat it very well all services done on time and with top quality product. at 105,000 miles my valve dropped in the engine ruining the complete block. this happened in my driveway as i started it to leave. costing me 8,278.40 to replace my engine. after this i have learned this is a common problem to which chrysler has yet to admit fault! i will hold out hope and keep paying that engine bill fingers crossed someday they will compincate me.

My family (husband & 2 small children) were driving home on the miami turnpike in crazy traffic. we hit a spot on the road where 2 roads meet and the engine complitley turned off. i freaked out because a car was behind me and it was busy traffic. once my senses kicked in i started wiggling the key and turned it and the car started back up. i did not want to drive home! my husband called jeep and they were closed. i called the recall line this morning at 8:00 am and the service was horrible. i was told it is my prerogative to keep driving because they have no fix. i let them know the vehicle is not safe to drive. the supervisor told me there was no fix they could put me on an email list for when a fix is avavilable!!!! are you kidding? then i said what if we die in an accident and sue and she said that's your families prerogative if they want to sue!!!!! i asked to speak to a different supervisor and she flat out said no i have helped you and i will not let you speak to another supervisor!!!!!!

I have only the one key on the key chain- i have moved seat back as far as it can go with me being able to still touch the pedel. and my car still cuts off when i riding down street - cuts off for like maybe 5 to 8 sec then kicks back in jolts us forward then i can hit gas-when this happens - i can not hit gas rpm do not move. i have been told numerous times have no clue when my part will be in and i feel my car is not safe to drive.
